Holger, Viscount of Oldenberg strode through the marble halls of the old palace. His steps punctuating a staccato beat in the echoing chamber. The formality of his uniform sent the rumor mill churning as he made his way toward the Kaiser's audience chamber.

The news he carried was grim, and the Marchioness was no where to be found. All contacts with her had died weeks ago, and the IISC failed to respond to all requests for information.

The Viscount was admitted to the chamber, and the Lord High Constable glanced at him before motioning the guards to clear the chamber.

Holger remained stiffly at attention before the Kaiser's throne as the doors closed with a resounding bang of heavy wood and iron. It took seconds for the Lord High Constable to activate the silence screen. While the room appeared almost medieval, the technology of the planet was worked into every corner of the palace.

The Kaiser studied Holger for long moments before motioning him forward to deliver his "urgent" news.

Holger bowed formally before holding a missive out for the Lord High Constable to take to the Kaiser.

"Your Majesty, we have a dangerous situation that must be brought to your attention before it is too late. Your Marchioness is missing, and there has been word of an attack on Pyxis, one of her colonies. A colony of strategic importance."

The lord High Constable offered the detailed document to the Kaiser, but it was not taken. Instead, piercing blue eyes studied the Viscount. "Pyxis is a great distance from Our realm. It would seem to me that Lacerta and the other holdings of the Marchioness should be accountable for it's defenses."

Holger hid his grimace. The new Kaiser didn't seem to have the grasp of just how important some of the more remote colonies were, so he swallowed his first reply and composed himself. "Your Majesty, Pyxis holds the largest reserves of Praseodymium and Terbium. Lacerta has been recovering from its own invasion. They are in no condition to defend Pyxis. The geology team on Pyxis is not armed for such an attack."

"Then the Marchioness is derelict in her duties." The Kaiser motioned for the doors to be re-opened and the other petitioners granted re-entry.

Holger gritted his teeth, bowing again, but not quite so deeply this time. He would have to find another way to get troops to Pyxis.

The Lord High Constable watched the young Viscount depart. That one would bear watching.

Viscount of Oldenberg headed straight for the one person he knew would listen. He was unaware of the tail he'd picked up as he exited the royal palace.

He hired transport across the bay to the Marchioness' familial home. With luck, one of the twins might be there. Rumors suggested that the Aurigans might have returned recently, and they were the only ones who might have the authority to act on the hostilities on Pyxis.

The tail the Viscount had gained slid into the seat of the transport and directed it to follow his quarry. When they stopped and turned into the long private driveway of the Marchioness, the tail relayed the information to the Lord High Constable.

Gabriel stepped off the Star Aruval moments after it touched down on Rigel. The car had been sent and he slid into the rear seat without a word to the driver.

The Maybach rolled smoothly to a stop in front of the main front doors, and Gabriel moved with purposeful silence up the stairs and through the door just as the young woman managed to open it. His stride never missed a beat.

Where a Rigelian striding across the marble floors would have left an echoing tattoo, Gabriel's footfalls were eerily silent. He disappeared down a flight of stairs that led into the depths of the old estate. Darkness enveloped him, but he needed no light to see his way into the lowest level where his computers were coming to life.

He'd seen a single report from one of the Star Dragon's transponders, and then it had vanished. Vanished in the region of Alpha Pavonis.

"RAINER! Shut the outer doors! Engage defensive protocols--- NOW!"

Thunder reverberated outside of the control room where the crew captain Carsten anxiously kept one eye on the tracking systems display alarms as more and more unidentified intruders breached the small planet's "no fly zone".

All attempts at warning off the intruders had failed, and they were not using any identifiable transponders, which meant they were not friendly and the small mining colony was not equipped to fight off this size hostile force.

Rainer's fingers danced over the touch screen as automatic doors clanged shut and alarm klaxons wailed , warning the small group of miners to head for the shelter of the main complex where the small contingent of warriors could attempt to protect them. But, Rainer didn't hold a lot of hope that their small contingent could hold off this force for long.

Carsten swore as an explosion rattled the control room, sending clouds of greyish white dust billowing down from the ceiling onto the equipment. He sent off the encoded message to Rigel before they lost all ability to communicate with the outside world. The colony on Lacerta had already informed them that they couldn't help after the Cephean attack, and Rigel was too far away to do them any good.

Dust rained down for long seconds before settling onto the normally pristine glass control panels. Red lights glared from beneath the dust as the intruders continued into orbit around Pyxis.
