Dinner Preparations

"I miss going out for dinner." Topaz commented out of the blue once all three children were asleep. "You know, the kind with candles on a table, food on plates, all those delicious smells, ambiance."

Lucien lifted a brow at her. "Where would you like to go?" He had not caught that longing in her thoughts before now.

"I don't know. We don't really have to go anywhere. We have a table, don't we? It can't be all that much trouble to find a table cloth and a candle holder. Do we have dishes and such?" Topaz snuggled into his lap.

"I would expect Andre has all of those things upstairs." He chuckled, "Though I am not certain I would like to ask him to loan them to us, perhaps you are braver than I am?"

"I don't mind asking him. What's the worst he can possibly do besides saying no?" Topaz giggled softly. "Who knows, he might appreciate the opportunity to have all the pretty things used. He should still be awake, we could go ask him now."

"Have you ever seen Andre upset?" Mischief danced in his eyes. "But, if you want a sense of adventure, let us go find him."

"No, I didn't even know he could get upset." The look he gave her made her fall in love with him all over again and made her want that dinner with him even more than when she had first mentioned it. It wasn't so much that she had been longing to have a sit down dinner, though until they had gone to Auriga she rarely had time for more than a nibble on the go. Rather, she wanted to be able to sit down with Lucien at a romantic table. Food, while she still needed the sugars for flight and magic, was beside the point. She giggled as she got up from Lucien's lap and then held out a hand to him. "An adventure, is it? We shall go defeat the mighty Andre and ask him for a loan."

Lucien motioned for her to precede him up the stairs. "To the kitchens my dear, where you may beard the lion in his den!"

"Beard him?" She giggled as she moved up the stairs. The sentient magic picked up those images, adding to Topaz's bemusement. She'd have to reign in those magic bits before they got her into trouble with Andre, though. "Doesn't honey smeared around a beard work better?"

Lucien coughed discreetly, "Honey in a man's beard is not a good idea."

"It's not? We could try that out some time." She grinned to him ever so impishly. "It sounds like great fun to me."

They made a right turn into the kitchen in time to hear Andre shout in French at the kitchen boy, and the chef was brandishing a very large butcher knife.

Lucien paused and glanced at Topaz, "You sure you want to ask him?"

"Of course. He can't possibly guess what brought us into his kitchen." Topaz had seen the knife, of course, but she chose to ignore it, mostly because she could detect no intention from the chef to use the knife on the boy or anyone else. She turned to Andre with a pleading look, but without making use of her Carpathian voice talent. "Bon soir, Andre. S'il vous plait, we need your aid. I'd love to have a candle light dinner with Lucien. Can you help? Please?"

Andre paused in mid-ranting. "Nous sommes tr?s occup?s! Aide? Vous voulez l'aide?"

Lucien tried very hard to prevent a smile from creeping into his features. "I think he wants to know what help you seek because I don't think it registered that candle light dinners and the chef have anything to do with one another."

"Oh, oui! We have a table, that's about it, and chairs. But it also takes linens and candle holders and plates and utensils and bowls and something on the plates. I don't know the first thing of how to get chocolate to wrap itself around fruit or vegetables in thin layers, nor much of anything else about getting food to smell good and be enjoyable in one's mouth. Oh, and cups and coffee and whatever else you might can think of. You see, we do need help." Gestures and pleading looks underlined her words in case Andre was unfamiliar with one or the other.

Andre gave her an incredulous look. "Vous voulez les bougies et le d?ner?" The chef looked between Lucien, Topaz, and the kitchen boy who was inching his way toward the back of the kitchen.

Lucien gave the chef a lazy smile, "Oui, she would like your assistance good chef to put together a romantic table with fine food, and since you are the master of fine food, where else should e look?"

"Merci tres beaucup, Andre." She blew him a kiss for thanks but hugged Lucien, excited and happy that the chef had agreed to help them. He had agreed, had he not?

Lucien gave a velvety laugh, "As much agreement as he ever gives anyone."

The kitchen boy froze when Andre shouted at him, "Show her the linens and such, I have work to do!"

"We get to see the linens and rescue the boy from a few minutes of not so nice conversation. It's perfect." Topaz squeezed Lucien's hand gently as the kitchen boy unfroze enough to lead them from the kitchen.

The boy nervously motioned for them to follow, and Lucien let Topaz go ahead of him. He paused as they passed Andre, giving the surly chef a hard look, "You will see to it that the chocolate is the finest, and your best efforts go into her wish." The chef knew better than to challenge the Aurigans in the house. They made him very nervous, and he nodded at Lucien before motioning with the hand that held the butcher knife to follow the boy while he prepared an assortment of foods for their return.

The linen closet was not far. The boy opened both doors and stepped aside to let the fairy choose what she liked. Topaz's gaze was immediately attracted to a pale pink shimmering cloth with little white blooms stitched around the edges.

"This one I think would be perfect, provided it's not an heirloom of Azjah's. Is it?" She asked the rather quiet boy with a curious smile.

The boy shrugged, "I cannot say ma'am. It is not normally used, but the Marchioness is not fond of pink, so it is probably only here because it doesn't fit the decor?"

Lucien touched it briefly, "No, it is not an heirloom, so we will make use of it." He nuzzled Topaz's neck, "What else do you desire?"

"Like I can remember anything when you do that?" She giggled softly as she leaned into his nuzzling fully enjoying the challenge he posed to clear thinking. "Candles and holders for them," She remembered after a moment, and after another moment she added, "utensils."

Lucien glanced at the boy, "Candelabrum and utensils are next. Lead on." He slid his fingertips along the edge of her wings as she turned to follow the boy.

The light touch set the translucent wings to vibrate ever so slightly and sent pleasant shivers through Topaz. Her mind was definitely on something other than candles just then.

"Mhm, sounds good." Topaz held the elegant yet playful tablecloth to her as they walked down the corridor.

The lad opened a locked cabinet where there were various sets of candelabrum. Crystal, silver, golden, stone and lead crystal, they ranged from single candle holder pairs to 7 candle per piece ornate displays. ?How many would you be wanting?? The boy studied Topaz intently.

?I like those stone ones. What do you think, Lucien?? Topaz loved everything Lucien had done with candles so far. It made all the sense in the world to her to let him pick those.

?They are very beautiful, though not as beautiful as you my dear.? Lucien motioned for the boy to take the candelabrum that Topaz had liked. ?And candles for it as well boy.?

He glanced at Topaz, ?Now what do you desire?? Giving her a wink.

?You?re distracting me again.? She chuckled as she leaned against him for a moment and gave his waist a squeeze. Her desire would always be him. Then she turned her thoughts back to the dinner they were trying to organize. ?We should have some shiny utensils to make everything look just right for our candle light dinner and a plate or two, unless Andre will have the food on plates already.?

?Andre is busy even as we tarry here putting something delectable together for you.?

The boy led them to a series of drawers with flatware that ranged from fairly simple shapes and patterns to baroque and very heavy silver with golden accents to solid gold flatware. ?Here are the choices of flatware Lady Topaz.? He gave Lucien a frightened look, hoping he had not overstepped by talking to his mate.

?They are all beautiful.? Topaz thoroughly enjoyed their treasure hunt and all the discoveries they were treated to along the way. For a while she studied each set, admiring the workmanship that had gone into each. She liked the multi colored metal flatware, but she?d not pick anything silver for this occasion. She indicated a set with blooms painted on porcelain that even included some fondue forks. ?Those almost perfectly fit the table cloth. Are there any plates to match??

She turned to Lucien then, with a warm smile. Her eyes sparkled with all the treasures they were finding and, more so, with love and appreciation of Lucien. ?The table will look ever so beautiful. I had no idea what marvels hid behind all these doors.?

Lucien chuckled, ?You have obviously never gone exploring here. And if you like this, you should see the traditional family house.? He looked at the boy, ?China to match??

The boy?s face screwed up as he thought, ?Not a perfect match, but these might work.? He opened the cabinets behind him. China stacked on each shelf. He indicated a very pale shell pink porcelain with deep forest green curves and swirls. The plates were not circular, rather a curved free form.

?They are Azjah?s treasures, are they not?? While was certainly curious about everything, she also knew that Azjah needed her privacy. Topaz respected that. Then her gaze fell upon the forest swirls on pink shell. ?How perfect!?

Lucien nodded, ?They belong to her, but has she ever denied anyone use of what belongs to her??

The boy picked up one of the free form plates and offered it to Topaz, ?Pink really is not Her Grace?s favorite you know.?

?No, that she has not. She is very generous, all the more reason for me not to poke me nose into everything.? Topaz smiled to Lucien and then nodded to the boy. ?Yes, she prefers burgundy to pink. I think we have everything now, unless you can think of something we should have. Thank you for helping us find all those treasures.?

The boy brightened, ?There are pink ginger flowers in the orangery, to put in a flower vase.?

Lucien glanced at the boy, ?Bring 7 stems back, quickly.?

The boy swallowed hard and raced off to the orangery for the flowers.

?Well my dear, shall we see what Andre has cooked up for you?? Lucien offered his arm to her.

She laced her arm through his and hugged his arm to her for a moment. ?Yes, let?s go see what he came up with. Pink ginger flowers are a great idea.?

They found Andre in the kitchen muttering in French, but laid out neatly on the counter were three small platters. One with cold appetizers, one with hot appetizers and a dessert tray, including liquid chocolate and fresh fruit.

?Ohlala, Andre. They all look adorable and perfect. I had no idea you were such a magician. Merci, merci, merci. Look, Lucien, little pieces of art.? Topaz was delighted. Andre really knew his stuff. To her mind, Lucien not able to enjoy so much as a crumb made aromas and look that much more important.

Lucien pulled Topaz close as she studied the artistic creations of the chef, ?You are pleased mon ami??

?Very. Thank you, darling.? Topaz wrapped her arms around Lucien and hugged him tight. ?Now all we have to do is to enjoy the results.?

Lucien and Topaz faded into the visible spectrum at the edge of the treeline. Topaz was wearing a lovely white gown that gave the illusion of a sheer material. It was gathered at her waist, and again at her wrists and shoulders with golden filigree jewelry.

Lucien was dressed in black tuxedo and flawless white silk shirt as his obsidian eyes swept over the Isle and the early gathering of people for this wedding.

Taneth sighed softly, ?I love weddings. They are so much fun.?

Lucien heard her, and silently decided he couldn?t disagree more. Weddings brought too many people together, and entirely too many males in one place. He wrapped one arm protectively around Topaz, ?You are lovely tonight.?

She smiled up at him, ?Thank you darling. You look drop dead gorgeous as always.? She slipped her arm around his middle as they simply remained at the edge of the clearing. He lowered his lips to her neck and gave a very light brush of his lips to her skin, which elicited a light fluttering of her wings.

He drew her closer, already wishing this was over and that he could spirit her away to himself. She leaned comfortably against Lucien and watched guests arrive. They talked quietly, ?I will have to introduce you at least to Tara this evening.? She knew how he hated crowds, but since Tara and she were planning Tormay and Taneth?s wedding, she truly wanted Lucien to meet her.

Lucien?s black eyes swept the assemblage. He could sense the presence of a vampyre, and it had him instantly alert. He gazed down at her, ?This ritual certainly attracts a great many people.? Aurigan matings were very private affairs, so this assemblage of so many people was one of those oddities of humans that he needed to accept.

She nodded lightly in Tara?s direction as she pointed out the little red head to him, and he followed her indication, stiffening as he realized that this Tara was a vampire.

Topaz continued, not sensing his tension over having a vampyre here, ?It usually does. I?m sure Tormay?s wedding will too.?

Lucien simply gave a non-committal ?mmm? as she spoke. He watched her with a great deal of trepidation as she arrived wearing a simple black cocktail dress. Her hair was swept up off her shoulders and she was carrying a very large, strangely wrapped box. Lucien frowned as he read the writing on the paper, ?It?s a Girl!? He frowned, he was not an expert in human celebrations, but he was fairly certain that was paper for a different kind of ceremony.

Tara made her way toward her parents and heard the unmistakable sound of Vasaris? voice, and she cringed visibly, murmuring, ?oh no.?

Someone had dared to question what Vasaris was doing on the Isle, his voice raised well above any real need. ?The great bond of alliance between the cousin Helston of the Dark Queen Rynieyn and the noble family of Tasslehofl requires an officiant, and I have?? his speech was cut short when someone pointed out Tass? arrival, ?Ah, there you are!? He moved toward the groom.

Topaz spotted Tass, ?There?s the groom.?

Lucien followed her indicated direction, ?I am introduced to Lord Momus.? He had initially taken great exception to Lord Momus stealing kisses from the Marchioness, but he had long since grown used to the male?s behavior, even if he did not approve.

Topaz smiled, ?I know, and he has behaved of late, too.?

Lucien lifted a brow at her, ?Mmm, I was not certain that dragons ever behaved.?

She smiled up at him, ?Obviously they can for at least brief periods of time.?

He gave her a slow, heated smile full of innuendo, ?We shall see.?

Tormay gave his mother a cheerful wave, and followed that with a polite nod at Lucien, who returned it.

Topaz chuckled softly, a teasing glint coming into her eyes, ?Do you plan to stay that long then?? She waved back at her son as Lucien told her that he would stay as long as he might. She shot him a grin, ?I am looking forward to the dancing.?

Lucien gave her a mock look of surprise, ?You are??

She giggled, ?Yes, just this once.?

Taneth waved then to Topaz and Lucien as she bounced her way toward the groom, who leaned down to wrap her into a hug.

Tara bit her nails as she watched Vas, ?Oh, I do hope he doesn?t embarrass me?. He means well, he does.? She was very nervous seeing Prince Vasaris here. Her mouth dropped open hearing Luc, ?No, oh no,? She now wore a look of panic as she glanced between Vas and her Aunt and Uncle. ?Oh no, he?ll ruin it! Daddy, you must send someone to grapple with him? something!? The notion of Vas being the officiant for this wedding was simply too much for her to bear.

The Dark Prince considered this strange practice of the groom kissing the guests as he stood stroking his immaculate goatee, ?RhyDin, such an exotic culture.?

Tara blew a kiss over to Tass, even though she was terrified that, when all was said and done, Tass was going to wind up killing her husband for ruining his wedding.

Prince Vasaris settled into place beside the groom at the front, for a moment his cape was still whipping madly and violently around him, but he raised his arms and it stopped, and he waited in that pose for silence.

Lucien glanced down at Topaz a long moment, and she returned his glance, ?Yes, darling?? He smiled, ?I was simply noting how beautiful you are.?

Lucius DeAuster was trying to keep Tara calm, and he whispered to her, ?If he spoils the day, you will have a divorce, here and now,? he told her in all seriousness. The Barrister was going to brook no foolishness from the mad prince.

Tass looked between Lucius and Tara as Lucius patted Tara?s shoulder in reassurance. Tass grinned, ?So, question for either of you, or both? he said with a silly grin, and you simply knew Tass was up to something only Tass was capable of, it was going to be a ?Tass Moment.?

Lucius gave Fiona?s hand a gentle squeeze where she stood at his other side, then nodded at Tass solemnly.

Tass grinned, ?Which one of you wanna be my Best? er?. Person??

Tara blinked in shock, ?Best? person? What?s that?? She puzzled a moment, ?I?m yer niece, doesn?t that already make me a best person?? She shot a look toward Luc and Fio in confusion as Tass snickered.

Lucius chuckled, then clasped the Younger?s shoulder, ?Today is your day, old friend, you don?t need me up there stealing your thunder.? And yes, even Lucius could jest on occasion. The Barrister was not noted for a fine sense of humor around RhyDin.

Tass grinned, ?Okay you can have Tara do it if you want, and then we can blame all on you anyway.?

Tara nodded, ?Okay, but can I hide behind you, Uncle, in case my husband tries to grope me? He does that.? She shot a worried look at Prince Vasaris, who had opted to await the designation of a ?Best Man, Woman, Transgender, or Other Being.? He also decided to wink at his lovely wife.

Lucius chuckled and spoke softly, ?I think tonight, Tara would stand better beside you, and yes, I?ll take the blame when all is said and done. And should your officiate get too? rambunctious, Tara will be within arm?s reach.?

?Should we go find seats?? Topaz finally inquired as the music began to resemble something other than a din of tuning instruments.

Lucien grimaced dramatically, ?In the back??

She chuckled, ?If you like. We don?t have to be in the front row for this one.? She winked at him knowing he would simply hate the place he must take for Tormay?s wedding.

He smiled and offered his arm to her, ?There ARE small miracles.?

She laced her arm through his, ?Many small miracles.?

Tara nodded at Luc?s words, ?Yes, I will liplock Vasaris or stroke his goatee, which he loves, if he gets bad Uncle.? She made a cross motion over her heart by way of solemnizing her promise to help keep Vasaris from doing something totally destructive to the wedding.

Lucien glanced at the chairs, ?Choose where you would like to be my dear.? He would sit where ever she chose, but his preference was of course the very back.

She smiled and nodded toward the last row, ?On the inside, they look perfect.? He nodded and escorted her to the chosen seats and she smiled and greeted every familiar face she spotted along the way. He settled beside her, his senses all on high alert.

Tass glanced at Tara, ?I don?t think Tara will be too?. Bad.? He grinned, ?She will lose a husband if she is not careful.? Then he winked conspiratorially at her.

Tara blinked, ?I?ll be good.? She was on her very best behavior as she quietly moved to stand next to Tass, who was now facing Vasaris and saying, ?So long as I don?t have to maim y? er, yes.? He smiled at Vasaris? question about whether to begin.

Prince Vasaris turned toward the crowd, spreading his arms and boomed, ?SILENCE?. He waited a moment before lowering his arms, then cleared his throat and smiled pleasantly.

Tara glanced over her shoulder at her parents and smiled, then turned to see Vasaris about to?. Officiate. Then she spotted Mia, ?Isn?t she darling??

Prince Vasaris watched the flower girl approach with that same smile that doesn?t at all suit the maniacal, mass murdering Prince.

Mia got to the front and hugged Tass about the knees before skittering off to the bride?s side with a giggle. Tas smiled and leaned down just enough to give her a return hug before she was moving off. He stood and watched as Fio came next.

Topaz watched Mia?s progress and said quietly ?I wonder if Tormay waits long enough for Sylviana to be their flower girl.?

Lucien turned his obsidian eyes on her in surprise, ?Why would he do that?? He couldn?t imagine waiting once you found your mate. These engagements were entirely too long in his view. ?Because Sylviana is adorable and he loves his little sister.? She told him with a bit of a grin. Lucien gave her a skeptical look that said ?perhaps? clearly as Topaz turned to watch the bride enter.

Tass?s eyes were on the procession, and he watched as Fio killed her smile with force of will. He couldn?t help but wink and send a bit of soothing her way.

Prince Vasaris boomed suddenly, ?Subjects of RhyDin! All rise for the bride!?

Tara clapped a little seeing her Aunt and then giggled, ?Oh, doesn?t she look gorgeous?? Tass?s eyes were only for Kitty as he smiled and nodded at Tara?s words, ?she does,? was all he managed to say.

Topaz sat down, and Lucien sat beside her as she rested her hand on his thigh and dragged his focus away from the wedding. He reached down and laced his fingers with hers.

Tara whispered, ?I?m just so happy because now, after all these years, the both ofyou really will be my ?Aunt? and ?Uncle?. She giggled, ?yeah, wow, I?m so proud of Luse.? As Vasaris began, Tara was instantly mortified by his words, and she tried to step back and blend in with a big plant nearby. The plant of course, with Tass? help, pushed Tara back into her spot as she whispered, ?I?m not a Dark Queen??

Vasaris began. ?Lesser subjects of the realm of RhyDin, Vast Demesne of the Dark Queen Tara! We are gathered here today to observe the forging of a proud alliance between two great conquering families, a union of great wrathful strength... and a bond between this man and this woman, who have come to vow their eternal love to one another."

Tass almost snickered as he felt Kitty?s surprise. Then a very heavy book appeared in Vasaris? hands and he opened it as reading glasses appeared on his face, slid nearly to the tip of his nose as he cleared his throat to read.

Vasaris intoned quite officiously, "This from the Nineteenth Verse of the Eighth Passage of the Dark Book of the Rites of Suffering and Also Civil Services -- 'To take a bride is to give, of yourself, everything, and yet to gain a thousand-fold more. It is the most selfless oath, and that which grows the most, like the Twisted Blood Vines of the Black Moon of Ul'suuul.' "

A tiny hand came up and covered that mouth of hers as Tara shot a worried glance at Kitty and Tass.

Prince Vasaris turned on his heels to face Tass, ?Great Warlord Tasslehofl!?

Tass was clearly understanding everything Vasaris was saying until the ?Great? came out, then he glanced at Tara, who had closed her eyes and very, very, very quietly said ?Warlord??

When she saw Tass, she simply shrugged, ?Apparently.?

Vasaris seemed not to see or acknowledge the confused glances and whispers as he continued, ?Do you take this woman, Kitty O Helston, to forever be your ally, your comrade, your partner, your lover and your bride? Do you swear on these sacred vows, under the great powers of the state and military of the Eternal Kingdom of the Dark Star, to love and adore her, care for her when she is ill and nurse also your love back to health when it is ill, see her through the joys and the troubles, and honor her in all things?"

Tass looked at Vasaris, his troubled frown vanishing under an onslaught of words and smiles, ?I do.?

Lucien leaned closer to Topaz, ?This is a great deal more complicated than an Aurigan ceremony.?

She smiled ?but they do ring true, and I think your ?ceremony? was complicated enough.? Then she winked at him. At his black velvet laughter, she softly whispered, ?I take into my safekeeping your heart your soul your body and will put your happiness above my own and give you the same which is mine to give.?

Lucien?s fingers closed slowly around hers as she recited the binding words to true to form and she studied him with love shining from her eyes.

Vasaris nodded gravely, then turned on his heels and said, ?Kitty O? Helston, Do you take this man, Great Warlord Tasslehofl, to forever be your ally, your comrade, your partner, your lover and your husband? Do you swear on these sacred vows, under the great powers of the state and military of the Eternal Kingdom of the Dark Star, to love and adore him, care for him when he is ill and nurse also your love back to health when it is ill, see him through the joys and the troubles, and honor him in all things?"
