"We'll drop in for a cup of whatever you prefer, and you ask all questions you wish. Next we take a null-t to Althos headquarters, and as we do, you keep asking me questions. And to treat you to something nice, I'll be ordering an atmospheric slalom run for us, at sunset perhaps. How does that sound?" Rhaine seemed to come up with the pre-designed plan.
"Works for me love. This is your world, or at least one of them, and so while here I'm just going to take my cues from you on what to do and when to do it." A nod then before wondering what questions to actually ask. He had so many. Vampiress motioned to move to one of cafe's, half-hidden by those vine-y and leafy and flowering Dehtyar-made plants. The table she selected was round, and has a disk in the center. The chairs were (as usual here) simple-looking solid body, but they adjusted to those
sitting immediately.
"To order something, just touch the terminal disk, and say it," Rhaine dropped the comment as she pulled a chair for herself. She had selected a table as far away from the entrance as possible, they were well hidden from most, and through the plants they could watch the atrium and those
standing on spiral escalator and floating in the air up and down.
Another nod. At this rate Artemus was afraid of turning into a bobble-head or some other ridiculous creation. But he merely took it all in stride. "So I take it everyone here is from a specific bloodline?" That seemed a safe place to start his questioning while he touched the disk himself. "Water, cold, no ice."
The order was delivered nearly immediately. Rhaine took a sip of juice.
"There are basically seven bloodlines here. But these aren't really bloodlines like in RhyDin. It's just a term, describing descendants of those who came on a specific colony ship. Plus, a specialization. As certain specific aptitudes are genetically programmed, people with them take their place in a bloodline. Like, Rey who's been mentioned, he is a Volin," her smile turned soft somehow. "They have nearly avian instincts, they fly anything that can fly and whatever can't fly, they make it fly. They are also wonderful engineers of space and air craft. Their designs.." she sighed dreamily. "You have to see and experience them. Althos and Althos-Gair are engineers designing nano-stuff and bio plus tech stuff. All the implants, neural interfaces, these are ours. Plus some really fun biological designs, though bioengineering is Dehtyar playground," mentioning of Dehtyars had brought her out of dreamy maze.
"I've heard of similar practices. You take measure of someone's strengths and push them into that field as they will do best in it over others," Artemus said, watching her calmly. Rubbing the edge of the disk absent-mindedly, vampiress spoke of bloodlines, seemingly unaware of bloodline
emblems appearing above the disk.
"True," she said finally,"But no one ever pushes you here. At least not rudely. You get a ton of choices, and it just somehow happens. Naturally, from the inside it's not as simple. The Council, the Advisors - they are responsible for not missing out on these questions."
"It is never as appears outwardly. I figured there were many complexities. The more tech around, the more complex. Easy enough."
"Add the safety freak complex here. About a couple centuries ago they had a major accident that nearly destroyed the colony"
"Well nothing is every untouchable. At least the colony came through," there was a wince to that that wasn't unnoticed.
"Each and every solution, before implemented in mass production, has to be run by the Council. And Elynne is surprised I keep out of responsibility positions. They did come through. But now it's an awfully safe place, which leads to interest in risky sports"
"Again, such is understandable. Not everyone is happy with safety and peace, there will always be those who desire upheaval just to experience it."
He leaned back and let his legs cross beneatht he table, arms over his chest. "What kind of sports do they have here?"
"Oh. A ton of them. Team beam-tag games. Atmospheric slalom. Aerobatics. 3d-dance. Beam-tag duels in dynamic mazes. Really lots, and everything that involves speed and three dimensions. Space, atmosphere, water."
This definitely sounded as Mentari knowing how to enjoy themselves. Rhaine explained the concept of beam-tag, one of favorite team games on Four Moons. Their conversation slowly shifted towards the coming holiday, the Falconfly Festival.
As they talked, a Branlee family entered the cafe. A couple about 30, and their ten year-old boy, all dark-haired, bright-eyed, in various shades of red accented with blindingly pure white - color so loved by the Branlee. For a second as she looked at them Rhaine seemed almost sad, right before she smiled and turned to take another sip of juice and continue explanations about the bloodlines of Mentar Station.
