Gabriel faded into the visible spectrum, his obsidian eyes going immediately to where the Marchioness even now sat enjoying the company of Colonel Savage. He knew that trouble lay on the horizon if this continued, but he could only warn her so far.

Rhaine did not react to Gabriel?s arrival, but he felt her irritation with him despite the lack of an outward reaction. Finaly gem like blue eyes paused on Gabriel and narrowed slightly.

?You are displeased?? His voice was black velvet, meant to draw her into discussion rather than trying to forcibly read her thoughts.

She nodded, ?Some people react slower than it?s smart. And you know who I mean.?

?You believe my reactions were too slow?? He knew she was speaking about the ?gift? Travanix had given the Marchioness.

?Why was Kitty?s faster than yours?? She shrugged. Her jab had landed and he didn?t care for the sensation.

?The malice came from the man, not the gift.? He should have suspected, and he hadn?t. He was losing his focus and that could be dangerous to those around him.

Rhaine remained nonplused, ?And you would accept a gift from someone who reeks of what you call malice? You know, after your chase after Kendrick, I would have expected less trust.?

Gabriel?s self recriminations were silent, but no less cruel, ?There was no trust at all. What did you discover??

Rhaine shrugged, ?First I had my suspicions without a chance to discover anything. Later on, got enough chances to take a better look.?

Gabriel gave her a brief bow, ?It would seem that I am in your debt for finding something before I did.?

She shook her head, ?No, if there?s someone you?re indebted to, it?s Kitty. She and Alain got the wretched thing away from your boss.?

Gabriel nearly flinched. Azjah was not so much his boss as his responsibility, and there are significant differences. He slid his eyes toward the woman known as Kitty, then focused again on Rhaine. ?So noted.?

Rhaine took a bite of cheese and washed it down with a sip of beer, giving a slight grin to Gabriel, ?No remarks on magic today? Or do you have other things to watch??

Gabriel shrugged, ?You have yours back. Care to explain the absence??

She shrugged slightly, ?It?s a long story really. Ended up in a couple of my bones broken.? She paused, ?More detail may be better for? conversation without extra ears. I don?t like too much information spread.?

Gabriel?s black eyes slid over Wil and Azjah then back to Rhaine, ?Long stories help fill empty minutes.?

Rhaine sighed as her voice dropped lower, low enough that only Gabriel could possibly hear, ?One of our officers decided to do a three-step intrigue involving information leak and framing me.?

Gabriel?s brow rose fractionally, ?Power play, or elimination of a rival??

?More like power play. Rivalry suggests conflict or competition.? She told him.

?Since you are still here, I presume you proved your merit?? He suspected there was far more to it than she was telling him, but he also knew not to push her too far.

She grinned, ?In a way.?

He studied her closely, ?Only in a way??

Rhaine nodded, ?I did spend a month magic-less.? That reminder nearly brought a shadow to her eyes, but she didn?t permit it to come to fruition.

?At a strong disadvantage,? Gabriel allowed as she spoke

Gabriel D

?It was a good lesson,? she told him with absolutely no emotion.

He was curious now, ?A good lesson in what??

?In being careful what to wish for,? but her words seemed to be chosen with great care.

Gabriel regarded her a long moment in silence, ?What did you wish for then, that you do not wish for now??

Rhaine gave him a fanged grin, ?Being a human.?

?Human???!!? The word was nearly blurted out it had come as such a surprise to him.

Rhaine gave a slight laugh at his reaction, ?I had my reasons for the idiocy.? She finished nibbling on cheese and downed the beer, ?Everyone has their moments of foolishness.?

Gabriel considered that, ?Yes, we all have moments of foolishness. Now that you know, how are you going to proceed?? He had is own foolish moments.

A grin curved Rhaine?s lips, ?without whining at least.? Then her grin transformed into a full fledged smile.

?I have never known you to whine,? He told her. It was neither compliment nor disparagement, but simply the way he?d known her.

Rhaine shook her head, ?No, I was whining in my mind. And that is something an Asmodean should not do.?

?Internal whining not allowed. I see.?

She told him that whining was an attitude that allowed one to be tired, or jaded, and that in the end bred a lack of will because internal turns into external, and makes one?s resolve rot.

?No more whining is a tall order Rhaine.? Such commitments would be very hard to stick to without any relapse. She shrugged, ?At least not on this subject. I?m not the most disciplined of His officers, but not a totally sloppy one either.? Gabriel shook his head, informing her that sloppy wasn?t a word he would have used to describe her. ?Having a two ton chitin covered baatezu bat you off and land on your arm does something to the manner of viewing the world, you know.? She gave him a slight grin. ?And back in Clandestine, I was one of the least disciplined youngster Knights of Asmodeus, until Vitus was banished.?

Gabriel?s features remained impassive, ?I should think the bones would object to such abuses.?

Rhaine chuckled, ?Ayep, especially without the built-in spells. These are reactivated now, slowly and surely.?

Gabriel looked at her assessingly, the bone was not yet healed, ?Have you recovered your abilities and skills??

?More than I expected? she told him, looking past him rather than at him, as though remembering or reliving something very pleasant, or very shocking.

Gabriel decided a change of topic was in order, ?Word on the winds are that Vitus has sailed back, due to your situation.?

She chuckled, ?Mine or his, either would be true.? She laughed almost silently when she heard Wil discuss the shock of the evening as Tass had done his rounds a la natural. She watched with that grin, but kept her comments to herself rather than voicing them.

But then Gabriel caught it and muttered, ?Human nonsense. Over rated behaviors.? Gabriel gave a nod of greeting to Rena as she arrived. Then he glanced again at Rhaine, ?You seem pleased about something Rhaine.?

She sighed and finished her beer, ?Sorry, Gabriel, it?s something I?d better not talk about. Consider it just the pleasure of being back with magic.? She stood then, ?I?ll hope to see you at the arenas. For now, I have certain things to do that were on hold while I was under trial.? She bowed, ?Enjoy the evening and hope this son of a dog doesn?t come with his ribbons again.?

Gabriel leaned against the cold stone of the fireplace. His shoulder wedged in the corner of the mantle and the wall. He needed to feed. Hunger was gnawing at him, and a whisper in the night air called to him. The lure of blood this night was strong.

Gabriel dissolved into mist and made his way through the streets of RhyDin, toward Dragon?s Gate. He wanted untainted blood this night. No drugs, no liquor, no, not tonight. Tonight he wanted healthy and vibrant blood. He skirted New Haven?s walls and threaded his way toward the water front. He could hear thousands of hearts beating tonight. Life, in all its complexity surrounded him. The thunder of so many hearts beating coursed as drum beats through his mind.

Hunger.

Sharp, biting, needful.

Blood.

Gabriel found what he was seeking in a young couple, blissfully oblivious to the darkness that even now stalked them through the streets. They kept to the shadows, and a cold smile lit Gabriel?s features. It was child?s play to bring them both under thrall, and as they stood in the deepest shadows awaiting him, he stalked them.

At first, they felt no fear, only the initial captivation used by Carpathian?s to call human kind to them, but Gabriel?s intent tonight had shifted, and with that shift, the desire to see what adrenaline laced blood ?felt? like.

The lure of the kill sang to him. Take their lives! It cooed to him.

He stalked them, letting some portion of their brains recognize what he was, and with that realization came terror.

The lure sang sweetly to him, kill them, take it all!

Gabriel?s focus was on the woman, she was the one to shift to fear first. Hers was the pulse that raced as she realized what hunted her. Gabriel shoved the enthralled male to the ground hard enough to daze him as he stalked the woman, who was frozen in thrall and fear.

She smelled of terror. Gabriel paused, his lips a hair?s breadth from her throat, and he savored the scent of blood and terror. Then his fangs sank deeply into her carotid artery. He bypassed the vein, closer to the surface, less painful to reach, and dug deeply for the arterial blood; the oxygen rich nectar that fed the brain.

His arms wrapped tightly around her, drawing her limp form closer, as though he sought to consume her entirely. She was sweet, and the adrenaline was giving him a ?high? unlike anything he?d ever tasted.

The lure sang to him, ?take more, take it all?.

And he took more, not stopping when he heard her heart flutter and stutter as he drank in her life?s blood. The beast had him in its thrall as much as he held the woman in his. ?More? it crooned to him, ?more you need, experience it all?.

Lucien

Date: 2008-05-14 10:18 EST
Lucien was playing with Sylviana, they had only just begun a game of hide and seek when Lucien felt Gabriel slam a psychic wall up between them. He went very still, forgetting that he was supposed to be ?hiding? from his daughter and he tested the wall. It was strong, but his twin underestimated how much Lucien had grown by finding his mate.

Lucien worked his way around the barrier as his daughter leaped upon him, ?that is not a good hiding place daddy.?

But while his arms hugged Sylviana to him, his mind was denying what he saw through his brother?s eyes.

*TOPAZ!* His call to her via their private communications was urgent. He had to get to Gabriel before the woman died, he simply had to.

With Sylvianna still in his arms and confused by his urgency, Lucien vanished with Sylviana to return to Topaz?s side, handing their daughter to her even as he vanished into the night to search out Gabriel?. Before it was too late.

Topaz

Date: 2008-05-14 13:59 EST
Lucien had never before called her with this much urgency; not for her to help with any of the battles with the Vampyre; not even when Gabriel had been so badly hurt that he was nearly beyond the help of the most skilled Carpathian healers and that of Mother Earth.

She sent him warmth and love even as she moved and shifted for faster traveling and searched Lucien's mind for clues as to what had him in such a state. They had met up and Topaz was holding Sylviana in her arms before she had all the information.

She was about to follow Lucien. But Sylviana was with her. Though she had tied Gabriel's soul to his body back when he nearly died, fairy magic was temporary and while she hoped that the tie still held, she did not entirely trust that it would. If it didn't and if Lucien was only a second late, neither Sylviana or her should be anywhere near Gabriel. Loosing his twin and having to battle and destroy the body would be devestating for Lucien all on its own. Giving the new Vampyre two people to use against Lucien was simply beyond imagination.

"Where Daddy go?" Sylviana wanted to know.

Topaz sank dowm to sit the ground where she was, nestling Sylviana in her lap, and concentrated on filling Lucien with love and confidence. He would be in time and duty and loyalty would rise to the surface within Gabriel to battle the lure of evil.

"Uncle Gabriel is sick. Daddy went to see him and make him better."

"He can't be sick. He promised bear and dolly to come for tea." Sylvina shook her head forcefully. But, while she sounded absolutely stubborn, tears started to form in her eyes. Topaz brushed her hand over Sylviana's curls. Their little girl was very perceptive.

"Uncle Gabriel will be there." Topaz assured her daughter, not permitting any thought other than absolute confidence in Lucien and Gabriel to surface in her mind.

"I help Daddy!" Sylviana sat up straight and looked perfectly prepared to do battle.

Lucien

Date: 2008-05-14 14:02 EST
Lucien flew through the night with all the speed he could muster. The mist overhead shielded him from a casual viewer, but the rate of speed would give him away to any vampyre in the area. He did not care. Gabriel needed him. He gave Topaz the images of what he?d seen, but didn?t convey how close the victim was to death?s door. If he wasn?t in time, he shook his head, he had to be in time, HAD to be in time.

His twin was so focused on savoring his potential kill that he hadn?t noticed Lucien?s presence, nor the fact that Lucien was tracking him based on what Gabriel?s eyes showed him.

Lucien found him and shifted as he landed into a great bear, swiping at Gabriel?s back. He needed to stop him from feeding, and right now, the best way to do that was shock and surprise. The grizzly?s massive claws raked deeply into Gabriel?s back, drawing blood and causing him to drop his victim.

Lucien heard the flutter of a weak heart beat, maybe?. Maybe

But the fight was on. Gabriel snarled and shifted into the same creature and charged his twin.

Topaz

Date: 2008-05-14 14:50 EST
The images Topaz recieved from Lucien overlapped with those of a doll and a stuffed bear crying crocodile tears over the twins sporting claw marks. She wondered if their girl had picked up on Lucien's telepathic communications and was reacting to them or if she was trying to communicate with either of them on her own. However, blocking her daughter was not something she even considered.

Lucien

Date: 2008-05-14 19:24 EST
The bears clashed together as 1500 pounds slammed into another 1500 pounds. Claws six inches long ripped at the body of the other and teeth sought to rend flesh where ever it could be grabbed. Snarls echoed in the darkness as the victim lay where she?d been carelessly dropped. A slow trickle of blood seeping from twin punctures at her throat.

Lucien was in a fight for his life for what felt like eons, but were actually only seconds before Gabriel shape shifted into his human form, throwing both arms wide and dropping his head back, waiting for the kill. He WANTED Lucien to end it all. Gabriel saw images of a bear shedding giant tears, images child-like in their simplicity drove home the heinousness of his crime.

Lucien?s giant claws raked across Gabriel?s chest before he could stop the attack. Blood flowed as those daggers sliced through unresisting flesh, rending muscle and exposing bone. He shifted into human form and made to grab Gabriel, but Gabriel?s powerful shell kept Lucien from reaching him.

The brothers eyes met across a distance much greater than the few feet that separated them.

Topaz

Date: 2008-05-14 20:34 EST
Topaz felt every tear and scratch, the deep ones and mere abrasions that Gabriel inflicted upon Lucien. The moment Lucien reached for Gabriel Topaz was the move, relieved that Lucien had been just in time. Now that the immediate threat had passed, he would need help with taking care of his brother's wounds and his own.

"They are dirty." Sylviana commented, sounding just like Azjah had when she mentioned that children were always dirty and sticky.

"Yes, they are. Let's go help them get cleaned up." Their daughter certainly had a way of making Topaz smile, even in the most grave of circumstances.

Gabriel D

Date: 2008-05-15 14:37 EST
Gabriel wavered as blood poured from the five rakes Lucien had scored as a grizzly slashing at another grizzly, but the swift shift into human form had resulted in far worse wounds than the bear would have suffered, but then, that was what Gabriel had wanted. Death. Death at the hands of his twin was all there was left for him now.

He?d been lured to the brink of vampyrism, and had nearly plummeted over that precipice. This death was all that remained. Gabriel?s black eyes were locked with Lucien?s as he waited for death to claim him.

Lucien was beating against his shields, and Gabriel did not know how much longer he could hold his brother at bay, but he would hold him off as long as he could.

He staggered, dropping to one knee as he weakened. His focus narrowing to that shield as everything else around him slowly covered over in blackness and void.

Topaz

Date: 2008-05-15 20:14 EST
Topaz sent the sentient magic bits ahead, for them to seek out damaged vessels, forming microscopic shields that would keep blood in and dirt out. It was a temporary measure, but they would prevent further loss of blood until a healing could be performed.

The scene she came upon was at once better and worse than she had dreaded. Lucien's injuries seemed to be minor. Gabriel, however, ...

The air around him flickered with the power of the shield that he poured every last bit of his strength into and his wish for death was so strong that it threatened to overwhelm her senses. She was still fighting to overcome the 'stupid' wish when the realization struck her that Gabriel was trying to keep Lucien from helping him. Not even her magic that usually found a way through any combat shielding could find a way through this one.

"Stupid, stubborn man." She muttered to herself. "Why was he doing this after he had regained control?" There was simply nothing she could do until Lucien had managed to unravel Gabriel's magic.

"Mommy, lemme down. Me help lady." Sylviana wriggled in her mother's arms, diverting Topaz's attention from the twins.

"We'll help her together." She had not even seen the woman lying in a heap on the ground until Sylviana had pointed her out. Now, she walked over to her with Sylviana, making a wide enough circle around the men.

"Are you coming, Ariel?" She sent the telepathic inquiry as she crouched down with Sylviana to check on 'Gabriel's dinner'. The magic had stopped the bleeding, but between what Gabriel had taken and what had bled out since he had dropped her didn't leave her body much.

"Do you see these two red circles right here on her neck? You could help her by spitting on them." Topaz carefully directed Sylviana in Carpathian first aid. "See, they are already disappearing."

"Lady wake up now?" Sylviana looked intensely into the woman's face.

"She would be better off staying asleep for now. Aunt Le should be able to make her well again the rest of the way." At least Topaz hoped that the woman had enough life left in her to survive a transport to Le's hospital. That would be preferable by far. The thought that she could only be kept alive by a Carpathian transfusion, and that for Lucien to perform such may be the only option, made her skin crawl.

Gabriel D

Date: 2008-05-15 21:45 EST
Gabriel was so focused on maintaining his shield that he was oblivious to the arrival of Topaz and Sylviana, but Lucien felt them arrive. But he was working to bring down Gabriel?s shields before it was too late. He sent images of the woman to Topaz, *see what you can do for her, please*.

Gabriel?s head dropped and the shield wavered. Lucien leaped then to get to his brother. And sent a call to Ariel. It would take several of them to pull Gabriel back from this.

Ariel

Date: 2008-05-16 10:44 EST
Ariel was working on a commissioned piece when three telepathic connections formed. She froze where she sat with molten bronze ready to pour.

Her sister in law reached her first, asking if she was coming, then Lucien, saying he needed her, and feebly and very faintly, Gabriel?s, telling her to stay away.

?As IF,? she thought back to Gabriel as she shifted instantly into a silent owl, sailing into the night skies. The molten bronze cooling once more.

As she flew, trying to gain the location from either Topaz or Lucien, she sent out a call for help.

Dominik answered almost instantly, ?I can do no other.?

Her own heart raced as she covered the distance to the Dragon?s Gate side of town. It was a place few of them ever hunted when there was Dockside and the more deserving prey as she saw it. Dragon?s Gate hinted at something she didn?t want to consider.

Gabriel?s thoughts were muddled and faint, as though he was slipping away from them when Lucien sent her the images of what had transpired. Ariel nearly fell out of the sky from the shock of the visions, and she faltered in maintaining her form.

?Where is the Prince and Gregory when we need them????

She sent the images on to Dominik, who snarled loudly in response, but the two landed nearly simultaneously beside Lucien, who even now struggled to hang onto Gabriel.

Blood was everywhere, and a wave of hunger, and nausea swept over Ariel. She glanced at Topaz and Sylviana with the victim, that was at least still clinging to life. Gabriel hadn?t killed, not tonight, at least not yet.

She approached the twins carefully so as not to upset Gabriel if he hadn?t realized she was there. Dominik moved in from behind, while Lucien struggled to hold his brother to this life.

Topaz

Date: 2008-05-16 15:39 EST
The moment the shield dropped from around Gabriel, the sentient magic moved in on Gabriel to work as Topaz had requested earlier. But there was little blood left to keep inside the body.

Topaz breathed a sigh of relieve when she saw Ariel and the male Carpathian. Dominic was the older man's name, she took that information from Lucien's mind. Now Lucien had the help he needed to take care of Gabriel and she could take the woman to Le.

"No, Sylviana, come back here!" Topaz moved to catch up to the little one, who had made good use of her parent's distraction. Now she was tugging on Gabriel's pant leg to get his attention.

"You're a mess. Me help clean up." The toddler told him with all the authority she could muster before her mother could snatch her up.

"No, no, no!" She fought her mother, tears of frustration over her efforts of escaping her mother not being successful already burning her eyes. "Down! Me help! Uncle Gabriel!"

"We have to get this woman to Aunt Le. Daddy is helping Uncle Gabriel." Topaz held onto her struggling daughter while she prepared the still unconscious woman for transport.

"Me stay with Daddy!" Sylviana protested with her bottom lip stuck out and quivering.

Ariel

Date: 2008-05-16 20:21 EST
Ariel knelt beside her brothers, prepared to open her wrist to Gabriel when Dominik intervened. The Dragonseeker?s metallic green eyes locked with Lucien, ?Allow me to do this thing, Gabriel and I have had many discussions these last months, and we have many common understandings.?

Lucien nodded once, despite Gabriel?s desire to simply die. No sound came from Gabriel, but he had not shut down his system, which is the first thing a Carpathian does in an effort to survive terrible wounds. Gabriel clung to remaining alert, but the blood loss was so severe, that he was rapidly losing his fight.

Dominik tore open his wrist, holding it to Gabriel?s mouth, but Gabriel was beyond ability to draw from the open wound. Dominik?s blood slowly flowed into Gabriel?s body as Ariel began the healing chant. Lucien held onto the spark that was all that remained of his brother. Pain was shared, and Lucien felt the terrible agony Gabriel suffered. The loneliness, the bleak despair. Blood red tears slipped unheeded down Lucien?s cheeks.

Other voices soon joined the chant. The Carpathian common pathway brought in six or seven voices, all from great distances, but the magic that bound them together flowed through Ariel?s chant.

Prince Mikhail was already making his way back. And it was Mikhail who summoned Azjah.

Topaz

Date: 2008-05-16 20:53 EST
Topaz wanted to be with Lucien with every fiber of her being. She felt everything he did, the weight on his soul, and the tears rolling down his cheeks, and it tore at her. Sylviana tore at her, too, fighting her the entire way to Le's hospital for them to turn around so she could be with her dad and uncle.

Only the certain knowledge that for now Gabriel's continued existence was depended on that this woman would live gave her the strength to continue her way to Le's hospital. Once she had transferred the woman into Le's care though there would be nothing, absolutely nothing, that would keep her from returning to Lucien's side.

Azjah

Date: 2008-05-18 11:51 EST
Eoin, Azjah needed Eoin. The message from Mikhail was too incredible to believe, yet when she searched for Gabriel, it was as though the man had truly died. Not even a flicker of his essence could she pick up. Azjah sat down on the settee as shock and then tears threatened to over come her. ?GABRIEL!? It was a soul deep cry of pain and loss.

Eoin appeared shortly thereafter. He had, of course, heard the agony in Azjah?s voice, but it was better if he pretended that he had not heard a thing. ?They will bring him here Marchioness. Here is the safest place for him.?

Azjah nodded without looking at Eoin. Yes, Lucien would bring his brother here. They would do what they had to. But when they would come remained to be seen. Restless energy had her pacing the great room, and at length, she told Eoin that she was going to the Inn. Perhaps Kairee would be there, and a discussion regarding the recently found runes would help pass the time.

She walked across the porch and through the doors to the Inn, pausing only long enough to locate and empty table, and recognize that Kairee has not arrived. She passed by Elessaria, who gave her a smile and a wave, which Azjah returned in kind, ?Good evening Eless.? She liked the elven woman, and hoped one day they might be friends.

Eless was talking with a gentleman she recognized from the dueling arena, Jolyon Gardiner. He waved more to be friendly than because he recognized her, and Azjah settled into a comfortable chair before glancing about for a serving lad.

Several moments later, Antonio appeared behind the bar, looking rather more rumpled than she remembered ever having seen him. He got out a bar towel, and glanced around the Inn, ?All right, who needs a drink??

Azjah forced a smile, ?Good evening Antonio, when you have a moment, a Dalwhinnie, neat please.? He poured the scotch, rather more generously than normal, into a highball glass, no ice, and handed it to her. ?There you go, it?s on me tonight.?

Azjah pulled out a small computer and keyed in a short series of taps. ?Thank you Antonio, is there a special occasion?? She was seeking information about Carpathians, and any hints, any means to keep Gabriel from turning Vampyre. There HAD to be some way to keep him from that fate.

Antonio shrugged, almost shyly, ?I just feel generous tonight.?

Azjah lifted the glass to him, ?Your generosity is appreciated.? She took a sip of the scotch and read the resulting information as it scrolled across the screen. Everything pointed to Gabriel having to find his mate, and yet in 2700 years, he had not done so. She frowned at the information. There simply had to be another way. And they needed to find it quickly.

Topaz

Date: 2008-05-18 12:30 EST
From the shore of Atrebla Lake the portal to Hy-Breasil looked like a sturdy and expansive dock, well-supported and reinforced and wide enough to drive two carriages abreast. It really resembled a bridge, except that it extended only about twenty meters into Atrebla Lake and then stopped. A bridge to nowhere. Or, in this case, a bridge to elsewhere. There was a slight breeze blowing along the shoreline, and the night sky was brilliant with stars, as only high-altitude skies can be.

"We made it." Topaz announced to Sylviana as they stepped off the bridge to Hy-Breasil with their charge. The place was always busy, even now in what must be the middle of the night. Hopefully that meant that she would not have to wake up Le. She paused to take a deep breath and then resumed to direct the floating, unconscious, and barely breathing woman across the genetically manicured lawn toward the main building.

The grassy sward, swept in-between the two long wings, all soft tan around and under the rich redwood of the support beams and the gently-peaked roof, wide eaves with cantilevered overhangs shadowing the long windows of the sprawling two-story building blended into its surroundings: lush grass? flowering trees? a spaceship parked on the side lawn?.

Topaz wondered what had brought Tyranny?s Favor from its accustomed landing pad by Le Amon?s residence. Occasionally Brigid Atreides, the starship?s pilot, parked directly at the medical center to deliver patients or cargo.

A security guard was lounging near the altar stage on the lawn south of the main entrance. An aged orc (which was of itself unusual), Nakuth had fought in the Paladin Wars on his home world for long, bloody uncounted years. Brought through the teleporting altar of one of the Lady?s temples, like almost all other emergency patients, he had been a security guard ever since his healing was completed fourteen standard years ago. Now his tough form had grown a little paunchy, and he had developed a fondness for Ertali chocolates, and his former comrades would no doubt have been shocked to see Lukuth dandling an elf-child on his scarred knees while telling highly-censored war stories to the rapt patients in Pediatrics.

He waved at Topaz, who waved back as she mounted the low steps up to the big double glass doors of the entrance hall.

Actually, neither the security guards ? all of whom were former soldiers who had been healed here ? nor Brigid?s starship were really necessary at all. Le?s medical center treated anyone or anything, from any planet or any dimension, who mounted the altar in any of hundreds of temples of the Lady scattered across this and other worlds. And the only other means of ingress to the dimensional bubble that was Hy-Breasil were the flight portal, high overhead and only opened on request, and the causeway which opened on the east shore of Atrebla Lake near the Beacon and which always had a couple of security guards on duty. Admittedly they were usually enjoying coffee and doughnuts. But who would be stupid enough to attack the most renown ? and nonpartisan ? healing center in the sector? Ah, well, better safe than sorry.

Topaz was about to direct them past Administration to the internal teleport lifts when Shamus O'Flynn stepped into their way.

"Greetings, Commander. Sylviana." The leprechaun managed to squeeze in a bow. "Looking good and who might this body be? May I direct you to the morgue?"

Topaz paled visibly and for a moment she lost the woman's heart beat. Indeed, the woman's heartbeat and breathing now only existed because Topaz made use of her Carpathian abilities and controlled both - a difficult and very taxing task because she had absolutely no connection to this stranger. But she simply could not allow the woman to die. Anyway, Shamus was a lab-tech, and while unexcelled at fine-tuning calibrations in phenomenally sensitive equipment he was not a doctor or nurse, Topaz told herself and put aside his assumption that the woman was already dead.

"Not a body, Shamus. I've no idea who she is, but she's important. Is Le upstairs?"

"Doctor Amon is in surgery. Follow me." He winked at Sylviana, who had been surprisingly quiet ever since they had arrived at Hy-Breasil, and then led them down the hall past pediatrics and presumable toward the surgery rooms with unexpected speed.

Le Amon was in a hurry to get from one OP to the other to take care of the most recent emergency. She had no idea what made her look down the corridor, but what she saw made her pause.

"Topaz! What a surprise. And you brought Sylvy ..." Usually she would have greeted the pair with hugs, but Topaz didn't usually bring a patient along. Instead she checked the woman's vitals. "Vampire victim?"

"That depends. If she dies, Gabriel will, and he'll likely try to take Lucien, Ariel, Dominic and Azjah with him, and if Lucien dies ...." Topaz trailed off. Le knew enough of Topaz's new family to put two and two together and she did not appear to listen too closely, instead ratteling orders and instructions to the doctors and nurses now busteling around them. In no time at all the woman was on a high-tech gurney and hooked up to mobile machines.

Le turned to look at Topaz when her team was ready to wheel the woman away, "You can stop with the magic now."

"Will she be okay?"

"Have someone at admin give you a com unit." Le refused to say one way or the other while the odds remained uncertain.

Ariel

Date: 2008-05-18 13:05 EST
Ariel?s voice was wearing thin as they repeated the great healing chant over and over. The En Sarna Pus was reserved for only the most gravely wounded. The beautiful voices blended together repeatedly as Lucien fought to hold onto the faint spark that remained of Gabriel.

Despite being in the bubble dimension of Hy-Breasil at the time and dealing with the physical discomforts of being that far from Lucien, she felt Lucien becoming energy and light and entering his twin's body in order to heal what he may.

She should be there, Topaz thought, to lend Lucien her strength, to be close enough to touch, and to observe. If ever there was anything she needed to learn and get good at in a hurry, this healing from the inside out was it. This healing was likely the last opportunity for her to get a start on that before she would be the one called upon to patch up Lucien.

But she was just leaving Hy-Breasil. Traveling, even at supernatural speed, took time. As much as she wanted to - needed to be with Lucien, she would miss too much if she waited until she got there. And she had Sylviana with her. So turning into light and following Lucien may not be an option even once she did make it back to his side.

"No stop, mommy. Help Daddy." Sylviana protested when Topaz touched down on the shore of Atrebla Lake.

"We're out of time, darling. We have to help from here." Topaz sat down tucked the little girl into her lap. While she did not like the idea on taking Sylviana's mind along, it was the only way to ensure that the girl
didn't wander off on her own. "You have to be extra good and remain absolutely unnoticed, like when we played. Do you remember?"

Sylviana nodded. While she usually had the nearly none-existent discipline of any child her age, she knew how to behave when mommy took her on 'telepathic rides' and that those adventures were over abruptly when she so much as mentally blinked.

"I mean not just subtle, but truly unnoticed. We cannot be distracting Daddy even in the slightest." Any distraction to Lucien at this time would be bad for everyone concerned. In order for Topaz not to be a distraction, she would surrender directional control and she couldn't be entirely certain that she would be able to pull away quickly enough when Sylviana was about to blink. "I mean it."

"Promise." Sylviana said solemnly, out loud and on their private telepathic channel.

That would have to do, Topaz thought and, hoping that Sylviana could keep her promise, she took firm telepathic control of Sylviana. She blanked out any thought other than supporting Lucien before she completely merged their joined minds to Lucien's.

Topaz capped her surprise before it could fully register. What she was met with upon merging with Lucien was not at all what she had expected, nor was she prepared for the disappointment. While Lucien definitely needed and accepted her strength, she could 'see' nothing, nothing at all. That, along with only vaguely sensing what Lucien was doing, didn't allow her to learn anything about healing from the inside out as light and energy she didn't already know.

Lucien waited for the healing chant to seek Gabriel?s soul, waited as long as he could before he turned the body of his twin over to Dominik. Then he became heat and light and entered his brother?s inert body. All the while, Gabriel?s faint protests tore at Lucien?s very soul.

Was he doing the wrong thing? Was he doing his twin a disservice?

Doubt assailed him. Gabriel wanted to die, but Lucien couldn?t let him go like this. If Gabriel wanted to die, he would help him walk into the sun, but not like this. Not on the verge of becoming Vampyre.

He began working on the damaged veins first. He was shocked at the amount of damage he had done to his own brother.

The chant continued, several voices he could not place joined Ariel?s and Dominik?s voices. He started repairing muscle, slowly putting the fibers back into alignment and mending them into functional forms again.

He no longer felt time. He knew he had been working for a very long time when he felt Topaz?s presence. She remained silent in his mind, but he felt her warmth and her love as support for him while worked to put his twin back together.

When he had finished, he went back over everything, checking and rechecking. Making certain he had driven out all the bacteria and toxins as well as repairing the tissues.

Finally, as dawn drew near, he returned to his body. Collapsing from sheer exhaustion as Dominik assured him that Gabriel would live.

Lucien would need to feed, but just at that moment, he could not move.

Ariel ended the chant before offering her brother her wrist, ?Take what is freely given.?

Lucien wearily shook his head. ?Dominik,? was all he could say.

They would need to get Gabriel to ground quickly, and Lucien felt long before he saw their Prince. Mikhail had come. He sighed relief, Gabriel would be sent deep into the sleep of his people, and Lucien would not have to do the deed.

Topaz

It was done.

The healing was completed. Gabriel would live. For now.

"You've been very good, Sylviana. Now we go to Daddy." Topaz stood up, easing up on the telepathic connections but continued to send Lucien warmth and love. "Are you ready?"

Instead of answering Sylviana nodded and started to turn to mist. Topaz quickly supported her girl in the transformation, and then they were on the move.

'I'm on my way to you now, Love.' Lucien needed to feed, and she wasn't about to let some stranger take away her privilege of providing for her mate the first time he was in need in what must have been enough months to fill a year or more.

Lucien

Date: 2008-05-22 15:42 EST
Lucien returned to his body and immediately collapsed.

Dominik had given Gabriel as much blood as he could, and Ariel was seeing to Dominik?s wrist when Lucien heard Topaz say they were coming. He would need her help to feed. But she had their daughter with her, and it was enough of a battle to keep Topaz from coming to watch, he simply could not in front of his daughter, who so far had shown no Carpathian need for blood.

Gabriel?s heart beat was not strong, but the blood Dominik had given him was old, and very powerful. It would help sustain him until they could get another to feed Gabriel.

Mikhail arrived moments later, and took one look at the twins, ?Well, you two certainly know how to call me away from my wife.? The expression was one of deep concern even as the words sought to chastise.

Lucien bowed his head to the Prince, ?I regret that you are needed so direly, but I cannot send Gabriel to sleep, and we must do so quickly.?

Mikhail knelt beside Gabriel, who was even as they spoke struggling to the surface, and the remnants of the desire to kill his victim still road him strongly. Mikhail did not wait for a second feeding, but sent Gabriel as deeply into sleep as he could. He did not want the ancient one awaking before he was released, and that took every bit of skill Mikhail possessed.

He turned then to Lucien, whose hunger beat at him even from the distance that separated them, ?take what is freely given,? and he knelt beside the exhausted twin. Lucien turned black eyes on his Prince before taking the offered wrist and sinking his fangs into the Royal veins.

Topaz

Date: 2008-05-22 21:53 EST
"Lucien! No! What are you doing!? Stop that." A moment ago he was hungry, ready to accept her help, and now he was feeding. While on one hand she was happy that he no longer had to suffer hunger, that he permitted someone else to do what she was supposed to and that he rejected her help stung painfully. "One moment you're weak as a kitten and in need of me and then this stupid prince of yours comes along and you forgot that you have a mate. Oh, this is just the last straw. That inconsiderate dolt. I'm so calling him out. Can't he happy with just stuffing Gabriel under some dirt? Does he have to use every opportunity to rub in that I'm not good enough for you, not even a decent Carpathian? Couldn't you have waited just two more moments and just for once count on me? The one good thing to come out of this and you have to ruin it. A moment ago you were perfectly willing to let me come along to dinner. And what do you mean you can't in front of your daughter and batteling my wishes? I thought we were supposed to be as one. You can't be one with anyone if you keep running off on your own."

One didn't need to pause for a breath when communicating mentally so Topaz ranted on without pause until she and Sylviana solidyfied near the group of Carpathians.

The night's stresses had been wearing her down. She had been hurrying to get to Lucien's side and he had given up on her without a second thought. The knowledge hurt, and while the angry words masked her pain she did nothing to mask her feelings from Lucien.

Lucien

Date: 2008-05-23 19:31 EST
Relief was instant, Mikhail?s blood was old, not as old as Gabriel?s or Lucien?s own, but it was powerful in its own right, and then Topaz?s thoughts hit him like a giant tidal wave of emotion. He quickly closed the common pathway link between himself and the Prince as she vented her frustration even as he felt her close by.

~Topaz, the Prince is anything but an inconsiderate dolt, he came to try to save Gabriel, and in the process found me unable to move from exhaustion. He does us a great honor.~

He had taken enough to allow him to go hunt before the sun would rise, and he carefully sealed the fang marks on Mikhail?s wrist. ?Thank you for coming Mikhail. This was too close.?

He had to smile as Topaz asked, ?and what do you mean you can?t in front of your daughter and battling my wishes??

~What I mean my lovely Valkyrie is that I have never wanted you to come watch me feed, since you have no need to learn, why put you through it? And as for Sylviana, she has no reason to see such a thing. Therefore, if I can spare you such visions, I shall do so.~ He would never understand why she would want to watch him take living blood when such a thing is so foreign to her kind.

She and Sylviana solidified amidst the small group of Carpathians, and Prince Mikhail turned to greet her, giving her a bit of a bow, ?Good evening Topaz? then he gave Sylviana a smile, and produced a brightly colored butterfly which he carefully offered the little girl, ?Be gentle with it, and it shall bring you luck.?

Lucien watched as his daughter accepted the gift from the Prince with all the gravity a child can muster, and then he walked the few steps to join them, snaking his arm around Topaz. ?Thank you for seeing to the woman, what did Le have to say??

He was still pale, and small lines of stress bracketed his mouth, but he was pleased that his Valkyrie had been there to try to save the victim, for the outcome of that would drive much of Gabriel?s fate.

Gabriel D

Gabriel?s world was a swirling, churning mass of confusion. Blood, he?d wanted the blood of the woman, in fact he had wanted it laced with as much adrenaline as he could coax from her, and he had terrorized her.

The rush, oh the rush had been the first true feeling he had had in more centuries than he could recall. More. There had to be more!

And then his brother had come. Tearing her from his grasp and picking a fight unlike any they had ever had.

Confusion.

Pain.

Memories flooded back as Gabriel relived the moments of the fight with Lucien, shame flooded his veins and he?d opened himself up for the kill. He needed Lucien to end his torment.

The claws had raked deeply and Gabriel remembered shutting Lucien out. Feeling his life ebb as the wound bled freely and profusely.

The world narrowed and then faded.

Blackness had claimed him, death beckoned. He reached for it.

Then he had been pulled back from the brink of darkness. Ancient blood, magical blood had flooded into starved veins. Veins that now retained the fluid, and he felt Lucien?s presence within his tormented body and reaching for his very soul. Anchoring Gabriel in this world.

He fought it. He did not want to remain. He had lived far too long, and temptation had nearly won tonight? or had he killed the woman? He didn?t know. He couldn?t sense her presence.

Just as he felt Lucien?s essence depart, he had one last coherent thought before his heart and lungs shut down, and he was sent into the sleep of his kind. He?d not stood any chance of defense, it had come so sharply and so strongly.

Gabriel?s breath was a soft whisper of sound as it ceased.

Topaz

~Valkyrie, huh?~ A little chuckle escaped. Lucien did know just how to disarm her and make all the pain go away. ~I like it. I do not want Sylviana to grow up thinking she needs to be ashamed over this feeding thing. It's part of who she is, of what all Carpathians are. It ought to be considered as normal as breathing, walking around, going to ground... ~

Topaz's thoughts stopped abruptly. Mikhail's greeting surprised her and she promptly felt guilty for all the unkind thoughts she had for him only moments ago.

"Good evening, Prince Mikhail." Topaz offered him a bow befitting a prince and a moment later wondered if she should have courtesied instead.

Sylviana studied the butterfly with big round eyes and then peered to her mother for permission to accept the gift. Having espied the hoped for nod she closed the distance and reached for the colorful butterfly with a big smile, showing off her small teeth.

"I gentle." Sylviana nodded her head solemnly yet excited. "Look mommy, daddy, I got new toy." She had already taken a couple of steps toward her parents when she turned toward Mikhail again to give him a quick hug before taking off with her prize. She only caught his leg, though. "Thank you, thank you, thank you."

"I believe you made her happy. Thank you, Prince Mikhail." Topaz smiled, seeing Sylviana so excited. She leaned against Lucien and put her arm around his waist, feeling much more herself now that she was touching him.

~You're still hungry.~ Joy flooded Topaz at that realization and all its implications, and she beamed a smile to Lucien. ~Thank you. I do need to know in order to teach Sylviana. And for you.~

"Dr. Le Amon hasn't said anything yet." Topaz used Le's full name for Mikhail's benefit and pulled out the little com-box she was given. "But she'll let us know as soon as she'll be able to. A ship had come in with wounded just before we arrived and everyone there was awfully busy. Le knows, though, and is personally watching over the woman."

Lucien

Date: 2008-05-23 22:26 EST
Lucien turned obsidian eyes on his mate, and hunger flared in those depths, ~I shall always be hungry for you.~

~Good. I just might be a tad hungry, too.~ She warned him with a teasing grin.

Sylviana made her way back toward them with the butterfly perched atop her wrist, where it sat with the brilliant jewel toned wings gently splayed and the long, black legs clutching to the tiny wrist, but it did not offer to take flight.

~It is not shame of how I feed Topaz, never that, but I feel the revulsion of many to the though of what I must do, and I do not wish you or Sylviana to face such if there is no need.~

~Others, strangers may feel so, but Sylviana should not learn revulsion at feeding.~ Topaz was curious, and even more so because Lucien kept this part of him from her for so long.

The news that the woman was being cared for was good, but the lack of news troubled him. How seriously had Gabriel pushed the limits? He glanced at the male who had been with her, ?He will need to have his memories of tonight changed.?

Ariel glanced at her brother with a nod, ?I?ll take care of that.?

Dominik lifted a brow at her, but remained silent. Lucien however stifled a snarl, he didn?t want his sister touching the human male, but it was not a thing to ask his Prince to do either.

She made short work of altering the male?s memories, and in minutes, the man was walking toward his home, oblivious to the events of the evening, and with any luck, by the time he called his lady friend, she would be home and also missing any memory of tonight.

Ariel

Date: 2008-05-25 07:35 EST
Dominik rose as Mikhail arrived. He had long thought about approaching the Carpathian Prince, but somehow he felt it would do little good now that his kind were nearly extinct. But he rose and bowed deeply. ?Good evening Prince Mikhail of the Carpathians.?

Mikhail studied the Dragonseeker a moment, there was no doubt of this man?s ethnicity, then he returned the bow, ?Dragonseeker, thank you for your assistance this evening, but you have me at an advantage.?

Ariel moved closer to Dominik as he spoke, ?I am Dominik, related by marriage to your Von Schreider line.?

Mikhail?s brow rose fractionally; that line had died out centuries ago. ?You are a welcome sight, Dominik of the Von Schreider?s.?

Ariel relaxed slightly, seeing that the Prince had no intentions of sending Dominik away.

They all looked at where the body of Gabriel now lay and knew they had to get him to safety quickly. He would require constant watching, and Mikhail would have to reinforce keeping Gabriel under. The ancient one would take a great deal of focus while they sought a way to keep him from going over the edge from which there was no return.

Mikhail knelt down and picked up Gabriel?s body, ?Where do you believe he will be the safest??

Ariel glanced at Lucien and Dominik, ?We should take him back to the Palazzo, we have a safe haven beneath those walls.?

Dominik and Lucien agreed, and Mikhail faded into mist with Gabriel, making his way toward the sanctuary of the Palazzo.

Ariel and Dominik followed.

Lucien

Date: 2008-05-28 10:39 EST
Lucien watched as Mikhail vanished with Gabriel, an unreadable expression on his features.

He turned then, pulling Topaz and Sylviana to him, hugging them ferociously enough that Sylviana wriggled between them.

His voice held the strain of what had just happened, not just the healing, but what he?d learned inside his brother as he held him in this world. ?We are going to have to keep him from seeking his own sustenance. He is too close, and the lure is too strong.?

He stared at the stars as they began to fade in the predawn light, ?He has tasted the power of fear?? His voice trailed off at that. Even Mikhail is uncertain whether we can hold him with us now.

Topaz

Date: 2008-05-28 10:56 EST
It was hours later, Sylviana was asleep, Lucien's wounds had been taken care of and his hunger sated. Now Topaz lay curled up against Lucien. This would be a great time for catching some sleep, but they still had not heard from Le and worry kept Topaz awake.

Earlier she had sensed remorse from Gabriel, but just before the prince had send him into the deep healing sleep the only thing she could sense from Gabriel was the need for blood laced with adrenaline and horror. Was it already too late? And what if it was? Could it be that the Gabriel they knew was already gone and the creature now sleeping not all that far from them was already Vampyre?

If so, they all were in terrible danger.

Lucien would be devastated.

Sylviana would lose her believe in promises.

And there was nothing she could do to keep either from happening.

While Lucien had steeled himself for centuries for the moment that he would have to battle his twin to the death and Topaz had no doubt that Lucien would win that fight when it came to it, Lucien was not ready for life without his twin.

A static rumble from the com unit preceded the male voice.

"Med Center Hy Braesil, ICU. Please stand by for Dr. Amon."

Topaz sat up and pulled out the com unit. She even remembered to press down the button on the box while answering.

"Topaz, standing by."

"Topaz?"

"Yes. About time, Le. You've no idea how much I waited to hear from you. How is she?"

"We dealt with the pulmonary difficulties and respatory system failure. We flushed her just in case. She's had a total of 16 B.U.s. The neuro - "

Topaz pressed down the button impatiently. "Le!"

"Okay, okay." The was a bit of a snicker. "She'll live."

"Thank you, Le." Topaz breathed with relieve, then she thought of something else and quickly pressed down the button again.. "Does she remember?"

"She hasn't woke up yet but the scans don't show anything to suspect that she wouldn't."

"We'll be by later then."

"Make that tomorrow. I got to run." Le's words were followed by the male voice from earlier.

"Med Center Hy Braesil, ICU, signing off."

Topaz

Date: 2008-05-28 10:57 EST
Lucien?s black eyes held Topaz?s a moment. ?We cannot wait until tomorrow and risk that she awakens and remembers tonight. Where will I find her??

"We will find her." There was no need for them to suffer separation for the duration of this task. "She's at Le's hospital. If we have to wake up Le we had better bring some extra strong coffee."

?We will not require Le, we only need to know where the woman is, I can alter her memories with no further assistance from your friend.?

"Of course you can. I did not mean to imply otherwise." While Topaz had been to Hy Braesil often and she could find her way to Le's quarters and office with her eyes closed, she had no idea where in the vast complex the woman was kept.

?Shall we then?? Lucien wanted to find out how much the woman remembered, and contain the damage as soon as possible.

"As soon as you are able to move." His eagerness to be off made her smile. It could not possibly be evening again already and the early summer sun was bound to be bright especially over the lake. "How much longer will Sylviana remain asleep?"

Lucien gave his daughter a ?push?, ?Long enough to go take care of this.? He kissed Topaz and shifted into a Barred Owl, allowing her to lead the way.

With a soft chuckle Topaz took to the air. While the reason was not a happy one, she loved and enjoyed every moment she had with just Lucien and this trip to Hy Breasil and back would gift them with exactly that.

Gabriel D

Mikhail had done most of the watch over Gabriel so far, and was even more amazed at the strength in the man than he had previously been. A moment of inattention allowed the ancient one in his care to flirt with cognizance. It was too soon though to allow Gabriel to awaken. The ?need? Mikhail had felt in the man had been strong enough to lure Gabriel into the tragedy that was their fate if they could not hold onto honor. Something that strong would not simply vanish in four or five days.

Mikhail rose and slowly stalked the periphery of Gabriel?s suite, pausing to appreciate the art that he knew brought no joy to Gabriel. Beauty, in color and form, were lost to his oldest friend more than two millennia ago. Twenty five centuries of black and white nothingness. How had he survived the lure this long? Such pervasive sadness soon brought Raven to his side, as once long ago it had drawn Mikhail to her side. She reached up and gently brushed aside a blood red tear that he did not even know was there.

?You grieve for what is not yet decided,? Raven told him as her arms wrapped about him, ceasing his restless pacing.

Mikhail kissed the top of her head, ?He is so strong, yet this lure has drawn him to the brink of catastrophe. If we lose him to Vampyre, I wonder who among us is strong enough to fight him.? He drew Raven closer for his own comfort rather than hers. He had learned so much about Gabriel?s strength of will and his power as a Carpathian, and Mikhail was truly worried. Who could he send to hunt a vampyre named Gabriel?

Mikhail had summoned Gregori earlier. It was not that he mistrusted Lucien or Ariel, but Lucien had his own obligations, and Ariel should not be required to keep such a one as Gabriel asleep. The effort it required was taxing. This needed an older and stronger and darker Carpathian, not a female of compassion and light. There was none darker than Gregori.

Raven lifted her head and a brow as she caught those fleeting thoughts. ?Perhaps is it light and compassion that could pull him back from the brink my love.? She reached up with a soothing touch along his temple. She had not experienced the need emanating from Gabriel first hand, but she?d seen it, and felt it in Mikhail?s memories. It frightened her.

Gregori materialized in time to hear Raven?s thoughts, ?Light and compassion would allow him to rise before he should.? While Gregori was full brother to both Lucien and Gabriel, he did not look like the twins. His silver eyes were as cold and hard as the twin?s, but the twin?s black eyes were harder to read. Gregori?s eyes were simply spooky. Most Carpathians chose not to hold that unnerving gaze overly long, if at all.

Gregori bowed to his Prince, and his father-in-law, ?I have come to allow you a respite from my brother. Go and know that he will not wake on my watch.?

Mikhail started to say, ?If you have need,? but Gregori silenced him with an effortless glance. ?The Dark One? as Gregori was known was capable of silencing even Mikhail with a simple glance. The Prince faded from view with his mate as Gregori set about making his way more deeply into the roots of the Palazzo. He wove wards as he went. He would spend the day light hours resting directly above his brother.

Savannah?s touch reached out for Gregori from across the seas. She could not travel, and remained behind with Shea and Jacques, but she sent him her love, and helped Gregori give a stronger ?push? to Gabriel before he pulled the earth in atop himself and his heart and lungs shut down.

Need.

Relentless, insatiable need.

Azjah woke several times on the flight to Rigel with a sense of compelling need. But she couldn?t tell from whom, nor a need for precisely ?what?. And several times while she was awake, the sensation would threaten to swamp her in its intensity. Yet the source of these sensations was not aboard the Star Dragon.

Whomever it was, the urgency left her edgy. And they were very far away.

Gabriel D

Dark oblivion.

No sight. No sound. No sensation beyond one.

Need.

A vague awareness came and went.

Sometimes it could almost be touched, but then it slipped away. Ephemeral and insubstantial as mist was awareness.

Time had no meaning. Time did not matter, for here, it did not exist.

The Need waited.

Gabriel D

Date: 2008-06-17 18:30 EST
The Rhydinian sun crossed the clear blue skies as though nothing were amiss. The normal path unaltered as that golden orb remained blissfully unaware that with its setting, new trouble would walk the night. Time did not stop in this world. It progressed ever onward, and that golden sun began its slow, inexorable descent toward the horizon.

The soil deep beneath the Palazzo was rich. Its healing properties had been augmented and improved for the sole purpose of rejuvenation and healing for each of the Twins. It has painstakingly been transported from Auriga. Gabriel had been put into the ground to heal. His body had done just that during the days that ensued after his brush with becoming Vampyre.

The body was ready to awaken with the setting of the sun. The body knew precisely where the sun was in the sky. The Need waited for the moment when the sun slipped beneath the horizon.

Gregori woke prematurely. Silver eyes snapping open even before his first breath, or the first beat of his heart. Sentience beneath him elicited a slow hiss as he realized that Gabriel was very close to awakening. He drew a breath as his heart began to beat. The sun still too high in the sky for him to be fully prepared to send Gabriel back into the depths of oblivion, but he strove against the lethargy. Time was running short

The Prince had been right to worry. Gregori had not expected his brother to be this strong this soon. With great effort, Gregori sent the soil upward away from his body. He still had an hour before the sun vanished. He sent his thoughts toward Gabriel, who still lay confined in the ground lower still.

The Need reached toward Gregori. It sought to draw him in, to engulf him.

Gabriel D

Date: 2008-06-17 18:31 EST
Mikhail felt the sentience and it brought him from the sleep of his people with an abrupt beat of his heart. He reached for Gregori to see if he was needed, and what he found there had Mikhail instantly becoming mist and streaming into the burning sun. The wards would protect Raven. Sunlight flooded into the mist, and along with it, excruciating pain. Mikhail fought to hold his form and ignore the agony.

He drew cloud cover to protect him as best he could with the sun still so far from the horizon. The thick layer of clouds soon began to pour rain on a day that had only minutes ago been clear and blue. The distance between where the Prince had gone and where Gabriel lay diminished, but Mikhail was chastising himself soundly for going so far away at a time like this.

Raven?s voice was a soft caress in his mind, ?You will be in time. Gregori is strong.?

Mikhail felt her arms wrap around him, and he prayed she was right.

He coalesced deep beneath the Palazzo, but did not trip the wards Gregori had set. He would have to unravel them himself; he dared not reach for Gregori again. He began the intricate job of dismantling one of Gregori?s wards. Focus was what he needed now. Gregori had left only one loop hole in his wards, and that was by design alone, or Mikhail might never have unraveled them.

Raven remained silent in his mind.

Gabriel D

Date: 2008-06-17 18:33 EST
The sun sank ever lower and shadows lengthened over RhyDin, and an unnatural stillness settled over the Palazzo. Not even crickets disturbed the silence after the rain stopped.

Far beneath the Italianate home, Mikhail worked steadily to unravel the wards.

Further still, beneath the Palazzo, the Need wrestled with Gregori even as it sought to pull Gabriel from the compulsion that kept him unable to rise.

The sun dropped below the horizon, and twilight had arrived. With the gloaming, The Need broke free from its confinement.

Hunger washed over Gregori and Mikhail like never before. It swamped them, consumed every cell of their bodies. Need for blood more potent than ever crashed into both males with devastating effects.

Mikhail dropped to his knees as Raven?s previously silent presence gasped from shock.

Gregori slammed up a wall against the consuming hunger, but The Need was older and more powerful than Gregori expected. It smashed against Gregori?s barrier, crumbling it into useless bits of psionic residue. It lashed at the center for hunger in both males brains. Driving all else from their minds but the single demand for the blood of life?.. all of it.

Gabriel?s compulsion failed shortly there after. His black eyes snapped open in the earth as his heart beat once. Then twice, and he drew his first breath in days. Rich soil erupted as he rose from his place of rest. Hunger. It was the first sensation as he shifted into mist and streamed from the cave.

A heart beat somewhere above him? then two?. Three? there was life in the house above them. Compulsion drove him toward the sound of those living beings.

Gregori's wards stopped Gabriel up short. His little brother had set wards not only to keep danger out? but to keep Gabriel IN should he break free of his compulsion to remain in the sleep of his people. Gabriel snarled violently as he stopped just short of triggering the first ward. Some part of his brain recognized his youngest brother's work opposed to Lucien's or Dominik's. This would take precious time. Hunger battered Gabriel relentlessly.

On the other side of the wards, Mikhail now stood too near the partially dismantled wards as confusion flitted in his dark eyes. The abrupt need to feed washed over Mikhail with a force and intensity he had never before experienced. But something held him there as he watched Gabriel snarl and begin his efforts to unravel his younger brother's work. He was torn between keeping Gabriel in, his original reason for being here, and retreating to the upper levels of the house where he too felt and heard the human heart beats. Blood pumped through veins and arteries in the unsuspecting humans above, and the sound of those beating hearts resonated in his body.

Raven's voice was shaky but clear for Mikhail, "Something evil brings this compulsion, for it is not you and it is not normal. Focus on me Mikhail, stay with me!!" Desperation caused her last thoughts to rise in tone, and Mikhail knew that Raven was already making her way toward him with all haste now that the sun had set fully.

Hunger and consuming desire for blood battered against Mikhail as he tried to stay focused on Raven's voice in his mind. But inexorably pushing against Raven's presence was the growing blackness that threatened to consume him completely. The blackness felt as though it had form and substance. It was suffocating and demanding all at the same time. It pulsed with an ebb and flow that suggested the limitless power of an ocean, but behind it was sentience. This 'Need' had sentience and a distinctive goal to accompany all that power.

That revelation shocked Mikhail. He began another ward to keep Gabriel inside, but the incessant demand for blood slowed him down quite considerably. He began to perspire from the strain of concentrating on the wards, and Raven's voice, and trying to deny the omnipresent 'Need'. Blood began to dot his forehead and trickle down his temples under the strain.

Gregori fought to make his way after his brother, but the Need for blood overwhelmed his intention to subdue his brother. He paused on the landing as he watched Gabriel systematically dismantling his wards. A soft, feminine voice spoke to Gregori, "I am with you, focus on stopping your brother Gregori, this is an illusion, it is not real, your need for blood is not real. Listen to me Gregori, not to the need. Illusion, it is not real." He had been so caught up in The Need, at first Savannah's voice had sounded that of a stranger.

Savannah too had felt the compulsion hit Gregori despite the distances that separated them. She had never felt anything so potent in her long life, but she could feel that her voice reached Gregori through the overpowering demand for blood. She kept up a soft litany of words, growing more insistent whenever he seemed to focus more on the blackness that was seeking to envelop him. But how to drive out this thing continued to elude her.

Savannah searched the Carpathian common link for help. In desperation, she was willing to enlist as many of her people as she could because she was feeling the coercion from two sources, her mate, AND her father. What ever this was, it was old, and it was more powerful than the five who now fought against it. And, worse still, it targets the susceptible males of her race.

Falcon was prowling the forests in the form of a panther when Savannah's call for help went out. He paused and through the link saw and felt what Gabriel, Gregori and Mikhail now felt and fought against. The great cat snarled loudly, sending the deer in the vicinity uncontrollably scrambling for safety. He had read about this force in the old archives in France, he was certain it was the same thing. "Le Noir" was the first thing that came into his mind. She went by many names, "The Black", "The Night", "Marmie Noir", but no matter the name, she was the first vampire. She was The Mother of them all. It was she who initially created these abominations from the Carpathians. "The Mother of All Darkness".

Falcon raced through the old growth forest as fast as the panther form allowed. He wanted to be absolutely certain before voicing his thoughts, but his mate heard them clearly, "Falcon, if it is Le Noir, how can she be beaten?" Sara was trying not to sound worried despite the turmoil she felt in Falcon.

He didn't know, but a good start would be; knowing what was causing the devastating hunger. If he was right, they all had a battle on their hands that they might not be able to win. If he remembered the myth correctly, Le Noir had been imprisoned centuries ago. If she had awakened, or worse, if she were now free, chaos and destruction would rule the universe as they knew it.

Inside the sealed tomb a single eternal flame burned a deep red color. A lone figure remained prone and unmoving atop what appeared to be a very comfortable bed. Every luxury to be imagined surrounded the figure. But the figure was shrouded in black. No features could be seen. Black shroud, black veil, and the darkness clung to the figure as though part of the female herself.

No others were inside the chamber. No movement. No sound. No life.

Le Noir has lain thusly for thousands of years. She is trapped in a form that will not allow her to move. The form will not allow her to exercise power beyond the slowly growing ability to project her thoughts. If her jailers suspected Le Noir?s awakening, they would all be very afraid.

Le Noir?s thoughts however are terrible in their implication. Terrible not only for the males she invades, but terrible for all life.

Imagine if she were to fully awaken?..

Falcon shifted into mist and streamed toward the Biblioth?que nationale de France. Falcon had been there in 1368 when King Charles V founded it. There he would find the ancient texts amidst the 13 million books and documents. He made his way into the Rare books and slipped unnoticed past the librarian there. He entered a domain he loved, but there was no time to enjoy being surrounded by the old memories.

Falcon found what he was searching for?. Vrykolakas. He drew shadow around himself and pulled the ancient text from its protected storage location. It was written in ancient Greek, but that was no deterent to Falcon, who gently, but quickly read through the pages written there. The text was widely regarded as folklore, but Falcon knew better.

He found what he was seeking on the 17th page, ?And the Mother of All Darkness was cast into her prison by the magic of three of her most powerful lovers. Three whom she had imbued with the greatest of her gifts united to trap her in a place neither living nor dead. There, Le Noir would be bound for eternity by their magic. There she would bring no more destruction to the world of mankind.?

Falcon read and shared his finding with Sara and Savannah and any number of others paying attention to the threat to their Prince.

?Le Noir targets males, for it was her male lovers who trapped her.? The thoughts belonged to Byron. Byron had not been alive when Le Noir had been imprisoned, but during his studied in Venice, he had delved deeply into the lore of vampirism and The Mother of All Darkness was a prominent figure.

Falcon?s disappointment travelled through the connection, ?There are no details defining how they imprisoned Le Noir.?

Byron made haste to the Italian National Archives to seek information.

Ariel felt the wash of insatiable hunger when Gabriel had been awake, but since he had been sent to sleep, it had not troubled her. When the Need slammed into her this time, she let out a yelp that startled her customer in the show room of her art studio. Her hand went protectively to her stomach as she excused herself from the front, leaving a student to answer the patron?s questions about any of the pieces in the show room.

She made her way to her work office and collapsed onto a chair before sending her mind out toward Gabriel, but it was not Gabriel that she reached. At least it was not a Gabriel that she recognized.

A roiling blackness met her search for her brother. It was cloying blackness that sought to ensnare her and she slammed up a barrier before severing her search for Gabriel.

After taking a deep breath, she tried Gregori, and was met with the same darkness. Only this time the blackness recognized her and sought to engulf her in the same driving need for blood and death.

Ariel was terrified, and as she retreated once again, she heard the echoes of female laughter. The psionic barrier bowed as the blackness tested her defenses. Ariel clamped down on her rising terror. She thought about life and sunlight, of watching the sun set, seeing the bright rays spearing the sky.

The blackness vanished as quickly as it had come. Gone.

She exhaled slowly and sank into her chair.

Gregori wrestled with his own internal demons. Savannah was his mate, she brought light and life into his bleak world. This kind of hunger should no longer exist for him, yet here it was, driving him to the very edge where he would lose his soul and become that which he had hunted for so many centuries. How could this happen?

The wall of blackness enveloped Gregori as a lover, the sensation of light and breath ceased as the darkness settled around him, then came the most seductive voice he had ever heard, ?Je suis la nuit. Je suis l'origine. Je suis sans ?gale.? The voice held the power of the Carpathian, only this was magnified. This held more compulsion than Gregori had ever felt.

Savannah had always remained a faint shadow in Gregori?s mind, just as he remained in hers. The intruder was powerful enough that she was instantly afraid, but she remained silent to watch. That this creature could so easily control a mated Carpathian male terrified her, but she sent the images and sensations to Raven immediately.

Raven too was a shadow in Mikhail?s mind, and felt the presence, but had not heard the words given to Gregori. Mikhail was old and powerful, but not powerful enough to drive this presence out alone. Not that Raven knew how to do that yet, but every shred of information they could gather would be important.

This thing claimed to be the Original, and without equal. Was she truly the Mother of All Darkness? Raven shivered at that thought. If she was, this fight could mean life or death for many of the males.

Ariel arrived at the Palazzo, still stunned by what she?d felt from her brother. As she descended the stairs toward his suite, she felt the compulsion even more. That is when she ran into Mikhail. Her Prince looked pale and drawn, as though he?d been used as food very recently and hadn?t time to replenish himself. Where she would have normally offered since Raven was not here, she dared not in his condition. He could just as easily kill her as not right now with the compulsion so strongly felt.

She reached for Raven, allowing her to see Mikhail through her eyes. The image was unsettling, but Raven needed to know what kind of shape Mikhail was in. And Ariel now dreaded seeing her brothers, who were beyond the wards that kept them in, at least for the time being.

Mikhail spun around as Ariel made her presence known. There was a feral need in his eyes when he spotted her. He instantly attacked Ariel. Teeth and claws ripping as Ariel instantly dissolved into mist and fled. She couldn?t hope to go toe to toe with Mikhail, escape was her only hope.

Raven screamed, and that brought Mikhail up short for a moment, but it was long enough for Ariel to escape from the Palazzo. Ariel put the house hold humans of the Palazzo under a compulsion to leave. Vacate the house immediately.

Inside, Dyson felt the compulsion to go. He shook his head, but the feeling wouldn?t go away. Finally he sent word to those who remained that they were on holiday for the time being, they should not return until called, but that they would all be called back to work. The old Major Domo then packed a bag and locked the house. Once on the curb, he frowned, just where was he going to go?

Ariel could see the last human in the house debate going back inside. She couldn?t allow that to happen, so she materialized in front of Dyson, ?Hurry, you must be away from here. Have you no family to visit??

Dyson frowned, ?No mistress Ariel, I have none, and no place to go. Why? Why must I leave?? He knew the Carpathians well enough to know she wasn?t playing some kind of hoax on him.

Ariel gave the house a nervous look, ?Dyson, trust me this one time and believe me that it is for your safety that you need to leave for the time being. ? She knew that at any moment, Mikhail could come after her, she needed to hurry. ?I have a spare set of rooms above my shop, go there and enjoy some time for yourself. I will get word to the Marchioness.?

Dyson gave her a reluctant nod and climbed into the Murcialago. Soon he was gone and Ariel perched in the top of a nearby tree. Who would know more about Le Noir? Who could tell her how to combat her? Who or what were the oldest and most experienced in habitants in RhyDin?

Ariel cringed, ?dragons? came her whispered realization. She didn?t really know any dragons, with the possible exception of one who called himself Tass, but would he be willing to help her? Would he tell her even if he knew? There was no choice but to seek for him and try. Tonight could see the irrevocable loss of several Carpathians if she didn?t hurry.

(Across town, in the Athenaeum Manor)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The old man was within the halls of what one had been a ramshackle block of rundown buildings. He had taken them all and, in his own way, made them into a manor, of sorts. It wasn't what one would expect a manor to look like, at least not on the outside, and in truth, perhaps not on the inside either. Each building that had be fused into the one had it's own flair.. it's own appeal. And there were some parts of the building which were inhabited. He was coming from one of those places.
There was a smile on his lips as he made his way from Piper's place. She had settled in well, and he was glad that he was able to help. There perhaps, could have been more that he could do for her, but it was never about what he could do for her, but what she needed of him that he could provide. And provide he would.. just as he would do for all those whom he counted among his treasured.
As his mind set to wandering, his feet carried him through the various halls, finally to deposit him into the library, and then soon after, his office there above. It was coming time that the Library needed a new keeper. Oh, he'd still be there, sure, but the books were coming to find themselves more attentive to another. That made him smile. That other was one of his treasured as well. He had asked her many times to come and work there, but in truth, it was not he who asked, it was those books. Perhaps, soon, she would give in to his, and their, request.
His gaze turned and he looked over the vastness of the city there from his window. There was a tickle there, in his mind, and that smile soon vanished. His name had once more came up, but this time it wasn't in a sulking threat. It was in a cry for help, and help about one who he had not delt with in a long time.
He stretched his mind out, and touched on the one who called, as well as one who knew of that one.
Byron was buried deeply into the ancient texts of the French National Museum archives. There had been a huge increase in the vampyre population in the early 1600?s, and he wanted a look at the writings of the times. He hadn?t been in France at the time, but he knew several Carpathians had been sent to hunt them when it had happened.
The unusual thing about sending the hunters was that many of them turned vampyre in the process. Could there be clues in the archives regarding that huge group of new vampyre? Some of that time period?s best hunters succumbed to the lure of vampyre.
He found a diary in the archives, held by the library because it was unusual that a woman had written it, and that it was alleged to be a rare work of fiction from a time that was so dominated by Christian religious writings alone. The author had titled and signed her diary: La Belle Mort, The Beautiful Death.
What Byron knew was that Belle Mort was still very much a presence in Paris. She was one of the Fontaine de sang. She was one of the oldest sources of vampirism in Europe. Could he find her? Byron committed the words to memory. If anyone would know, Le Belle should.
Ariel stilled as an alien and unknown consciousness touched her own. It was old and very powerful, but she couldn?t detect the kind of malevolence she?d felt from the Prince, or from her brothers. She reached toward the consciousness, ~Are you the one they call Tass?~
She waited, ready to slam down a barrier if it was not. How would she describe this thing to him? And better still, how had he known she searched for him? Ariel shivered in the warm evening air.
There was a small toying curl at the edge of his lips as her response came. "Ah, my dear, even if it were not, that slight moment which you opened and let me in would be all that was needed to be beyond those barriers which you hold ready. But yes, I am he."
There was no hint of braggadocio in his words, and given the age and power she felt in the presence, she knew he was probably correct. But now she had to focus on the problem at hand.
~Forgive my intrusion Tass, I have urgent need to learn a thing that very few living beings might know the answer to, and it is my hope that you may be able to help us.~
There was a slight shake to his head as he turned from the window, and moved to one of the walls that were lined with old scrolls. "It was I who intruded, hun. And there are even things that even those few living beings don't know. But, that, perhaps, is neither here nor there. What is it that you need?"
Ariel felt around the edges of this alien consciousness, trying not to be offensive in her curiosity, it was clearly not humanoid thought, despite that it spoke in Common.
~There are tales that go back into the very mists of the beginning of humanity that say that the Vampyre was the creation of a single entity. That all subsequent vampyre are the ?children? so to speak of one that has many names, but the name I know her by is Le Noir. How would we be able to recognize her if she were able to escape her imprisonment and once more walk the consciousness of humanity? Do you know?~
There were so very many questions she would like to ask of this venerable creature, but if he could give her a clue how to recognize the Mother of All Darkness, that would be a start.
There was a soft chuckle than ran the length of distance. "Le Noir? A crude, if not partially apt name for her. I fear I would not be able to give you a description of her, for her guises are many, and ever changing.?
"As for knowing if she walked once more, that is a fairly simple thing to know. There would be destruction in her wake. The last time which I had seen her, she tried to completely destroy a world she had started in creating, only to be brought down by a child of her own."
He paused there. There were many times which he had witnessed her passing, and there was little enough time, if her willingness to open herself for a stranger to her was any measure.
"But do not think that the kind of destruction which follows her is of such a simple base. There is more than one way to destroy, and she knows them." Again, there came a pause, then his words shifted. "Why have you sought me with simple enough measures, and ask of such things?"
Ariel?s blood ran cold in her veins. ~We fear that Le Noir is waking. There is a power, old, and one that drives even the mated males to blood lust that kills. Something is driving them to become Vampyre when their mates should be able to keep them from turning. It has affected my brothers, and my Prince. But to try to fight this thing, we need to know what it is.~
Ariel
Date: 2008-07-27 16:02 EST
"We are what we are. But you have not answered my query. If, in truth this Le Noir is about, why do you seek me through these means? Had it not been I who touched on that unprotected link, what do you believe would have happened?"
Ariel paused, the blood lust had not affected any of the females, only the males so far, ~I do not believe I am in danger from this thing. It attacks only our males with the blood lust. Therefore, nothing would have happened. If it is The Mother of All Darkness, she is focused on male Carpathians alone."
"And do you not think that she would seek to manipulate you? As I stated before, there are other ways of destroying."
~She is capable, but so far has not. But we deviate now, I had hoped given the dragon kind's great longevity, which eclipses even Carpathian, that you may know if the Darkness stirs once more. She was imprisoned centuries ago, but what I feel from my brothers is not in their nature. It is darker, more violent, and will cost them their souls.~ She shivered, the idea that she could lose these three to Le Noir was too awful to dwell on.
There was a slight shake of his head. It was sometimes astonishing the arrogance that some of the older races brought forth in their presumptions. Even his own...
His voice came softly, as if there was great weight that bore down upon it. "It is likely that this Le Noir, Lillith, does move once more." Perhaps not all of the story, but it would confirm the worry that she held, and give her enough of a measure to do what she needed, if she could.
Ariel went absolutely still. ~Do you know how she was imprisoned before?~
Byron?s search took him into every dark nook and cranny of Paris. La Belle was the source of the blood in Paris, and indeed for much of Europe. She was older than most of the masters, and so powerful that few could resist her call. Every fiber of Byron?s body screamed for her destruction, but if he was to learn what Belle knew, he could not go in as a Carpathian Hunter. He perched atop the roof of L'?glise de la Madeleine as he surveyed the eighth arrondissement of Paris still looking for clues. To get to Belle, he would probably have to get to one of her minions.
His skin itched at that notion. To be in the close proximity of vampyre and not slay it seemed an affront he was not certain he could adjust to, but the need was dire, and he could return later to do the job commanded him by his Prince. Mikhail would understand, ?Unless he did not survive this new threat.? The unbidden thought brought a snarl tearing from his lungs and the night stilled from its echoes.
Byron caught sight of a lone vampyre prowling in the back streets near the Madeleine Chapel and he took flight in the form of an owl for a closer look. The Hunter circled lazily above the male, who seemed to busy ferreting out a victim and not enough focus on keeping his existence. Byron shuddered his revulsion. He did not know this particular vampyre, and clearly he was not a very old one to be so consumed by seeking prey and paying no attention to his own safety.
Byron scanned the area for other vampyre. The city was rife with them, but there were no blank spots, and nothing extremely close by. The Hunter swooped in and shifted into human form just as his hand grabbed the vampyre about his throat. Byron?s hand remained that of a taloned owl as he stared the shocked young vampyre in the eyes. ?Listen well vampyre, if you even TRY to shift, I will sever your jugular and tear out your heart before you can blink.? Byron?s instincts shrieked at him to finish the undead one here and now, but he clamped down on his instincts hard.
The talons tightened slightly as the young vampyre went still. He may be young, but in life, he had been rather brilliant, and the fact that this Hunter hadn?t simply ended his existence meant the Hunter wanted something. Perhaps there was room for parlay. He gave a slight nod, which was difficult to do given that Byron had him by the throat in a very painful grip.
?Do you know the vampyre calling herself La Belle Morte?? Byron?s eyes were locked with the vampyre?s. He would recognized a lie if the creature was foolish enough to give him one. He felt it stiffen in shocked surprise.
The words were barely audible as Byron crushed down on the vampyre?s throat harder, ?Everyone knows Le Belle, but few seek her company willingly.?
Byron gave him a slight shake, ?You will seek her company willingly this night, or I will hunt you down and bring you to the Prince?s justice, am I clear??
The vampyre hissed at Byron, ?You do not know what you ask.?
The talons lengthened and stabbed ever closer to the creature?s jugular and carotid arteries, ?I know that you would be wiser to carry my message to La Belle and exist another night than to deny me and die again now, only this time for eternity.? Byron felt certain the message would be delivered, and he knew that he would hunt this one after it had been.
Martin had heard stories of La Belle Morte. He knew to carry any message to her was a risk to his very existence as well, but this threat was imminent. ?What is the message??
?Tell La Belle that I seek a meeting on neutral ground. One night of her time is my request. In return, I will leave her pets alone for thirty days to allow them to seek refuge. Tell her I am at L'?glise de la Madeleine. She need not enter holy ground, I will leave the site for our meeting.?
Martin couldn?t believe what he was hearing. ?Are you mad, Hunter??
Byron leaned close to the fetid breath of the vampyre, his eyes going the deathly black of a hunting shark, ?Tell her, now.? As the vampyre nodded once, Byron released his grip on the creature?s throat and the young vampyre dissolved.
Byron then returned to the roof of L'?glise de la Madeleine to wait.
Ariel
?Vous me pardonnerez si je dis que je suis choqu? pour vous voir ici chasseur.? The honey smooth alto voice whispered into Byron?s ear as he sat atop the roof. The most gorgeous woman he could have imagined materialized beside him, undaunted by his presence on holy ground as she asked the Hunter to pardon her shock at seeing him here.
Byron fought the urge to launch himself at her and put a permanent end to her days.
?Il est tr?s dur pour vous ? l'ignor votre chasseur de mani?res.? She gave him a throaty laugh as she felt his struggle.
Byron mastered his impulses, ?La Belle Morte?? He really didn?t need to ask, he knew from the waves of power she finally allowed to roll off of her form. She was the epitome of a master vampire, and he wondered briefly if she tried to roll him, would he be able to stop her?
?Oui, je suis celui que vous cherchez.? She turned dark eyes on Byron as she acknowledged that she was the one he sought. ?Qu'est-ce vous recherche, chasseur??
It was a logical question, what did he want. His kind only sought her kind when they engaged in mortal combat. ?I have come under truce Belle, with information you may need to have in exchange for information I know you have.?
She raised an elegant brow at him, ?Quelle connaissance cherchez-vous??
Byron knew he would only get one shot at this. ?You were here when Le Noir was imprisoned. She awakens Belle. She awakens and hunts even now.? Byron watched Belle?s features closely.
?Vous savez que c'est s?r?? Her attention was locked onto Byron as she asked if he was certain of his facts.
?Oui, She wakens and she will come for those who imprisoned her Belle.? He drove home the point that Belle would be on Le Noir?s list of those to punish.
Belle studied him for several minutes. ?Ces nouvelles sont tr?s mauvaises.?
Yes, this was very bad news thought Byron. ?My question for you now is how did you ensnare Le Noir the last time??
Ariel
Date: 2008-09-18 20:39 EST
Belle studied Byron for a very long while. Whatever internal debate she was having remained hidden only to her own counsel, and no hint marred her beautiful features. ?Les tours que nous avons employ? la derni?re fois ne fonctionneraient pas une deuxi?me fois.? Belle at last spoke, and she of any creature in the world would know Le Noir. The notion that Le Noir was stirring roused emotions Belle had not felt in many centuries. Fear. She despised the taste fear left in her mouth.
Byron?s black gaze shifted to the easterly direction, soon they would have to separate, for Belle could not tolerate even the briefest moment of sunlight. ?You say the tricks you used the last time would not work again a second time. If you had to do this again, how would you approach it?? He hoped she had some idea, any idea would be more than they had for the time being.
Belle shook her head, ?Je dois penser sur ces nouvelles. Ce qui doit ?tre fait une deuxi?me fois nous laissera sans la pi?ce pour des erreurs.?
Byron nodded as Belle rose from their perch atop the roof, ?Think on it as you need, but will you get back to me soon? The situation grows desperate.? She was right, there would be no room for errors. He hoped she would agree to meet him upon the next rising, and he began to feel the effects of the coming dawn, so he knew she was already uncomfortable. Seeing the dawn would destroy Belle, and while his every instinct shrieked at him to slay her, they needed her, and they had a transitory truce.
Belle nodded, ?Je vous trouverai pendant deux soir?es d?s maintenant,? and with that, Belle simply vanished into the night.
Two risings from now she had promised to meet him again. Byron sighed, he wasn?t certain Mikhail or Gabriel could last that much longer. But, on the brighter side, she would meet with him, and she had participated in the first binding of Le Noir. That was something to place hope in when everything else seemed so very bleak.
Byron relayed what he had learned from Belle to the females of his people, making certain that none of his news would reach the males, and potentially Le Noir herself. Then he drifted down into the catacombs of L'?glise de la Madeleine. Now that every vampyre in Paris knew of his presence, he would need every advantage possible to avoid attracting them in for a hopeful kill. He opened the old earth and floated into his resting place, setting every safeguard he knew before pulling the soil in atop himself and shutting down his heart and lungs to sleep the sleep of his kind.
Mikhail?s reason warred with the driving desire for blood. His reaction to Ariel?s presence remained a troubling thought buried behind the consuming need. But Raven?s scream dragged him from the blood lust and just millimeters away from the precipice he was so willing to go over, long enough for him to foggily realize that what he had nearly done was wrong.
He glanced through the wards at Gabriel as he struggled to regain himself from the shroud of blood lust that ensnared him. His oldest and closest friend remained completely held in the grip of this blood lust, and was intent upon escaping his prison with all possible haste.
Something in the back of Mikhail?s mind told him that Gabriel could not be allowed to get out of these rooms.
Raven felt his dim awareness and she reinforced his thoughts, quietly adding her own to his in an effort to keep him with her and not let him slip completely into the abyss if she could help him in any way. Raven could feel the darkness recede slightly, and Mikhail returning. Someone had to be able to reach Gabriel, the question was whom. Ariel might be able to, but she dare not return to the Palazzo, not with Mikhail holding on by a thread.
Shea was with Raven, and it was Shea to reached for Ariel.
Ariel?s shock was evident despite the distances that separated them. Shea wanted her to try to reach Gabriel? What she?d felt from Mikhail and Gabriel was an unbridled lust to consume. What if they pulled her in and she couldn?t escape? Further, Gabriel was considerably older and more powerful than she was, and she sat high in the tree watching the Palazzo.
Ariel steeled herself for the first touch. She?d recoiled on the previous attempts in order to protect herself, but what if he needed her and she was simply being a coward? Ariel sent herself into the mental connection, seeking Gabriel. She was struck, almost physically with the fury and the hunger. Hunger was a living, breathing thing that had taken hold of him. There was very little of Gabriel to be found. This hunger, this entity, had wrapped itself around him and covered him up.
Ariel pushed a bit further, seeking some part of Gabriel that would recognize her. What happened next was so unexpected, and so shocking that she nearly fell out of the tree. The image of a very petite female shrouded all in black formed between Ariel and Gabriel. Without a word, she made a shoving motion with her hand, and Ariel was summarily forced back along the connection which slammed shut behind her. The touch was pure evil. It was darkness incarnate.
Ariel shared the experience with Shea and Raven, if they were not careful, this one might shove them away from Mikhail, and then they would have no inside information on what was happening inside the palazzo, and worse, they might have to fight both Gabriel and Mikhail.
Byron?s rest was disturbed as Ariel insistently sought to rouse him half a world away. She managed at length to wake him and the full light of day was something he was so very aware of above him. The lethargy of day threatened to drag him back into the sleep of his kind until Ariel relayed what had happened with the black clad female. He committed the images to memory, vowing to seek out Belle before the appointed time. This was imperative; finally there was an image to go with the feelings and sensations. Belle should know from them if they were really dealing with Le Noir or something else.
He rose as the sun began its slow descent toward the horizon. Belle could not waken yet, but he had found a likely location. It was not that the exact spot was pinpointed, but what Byron found were the ?absence? locations that created a periphery around one location. Belle was too old and too powerful to give herself away with a void, but those who protected her gave themselves away with their blank places.
Byron flew into the heart of the normal spot and found a building that would suit Belle. It was a grand mansion in the style of the French aristocracy; it was just the sort of place that Belle would want to call home. He landed atop the roof to wait. As the sun dipped below the horizon and darkness fell, Byron felt movement deep within the house. ?Belle? Meet me on the roof top.? Byron sent out a call for her partly as a courtesy, and partly be keep those around her from swarming to attack him.
Belle?s ability to hide her thoughts faltered briefly as she wakened to hear Byron right above her. For a Hunter to know her resting place was a very bad thing. It meant she had to move now, for once their truce was over, she had no doubt that he would come seeking the lives of those around her, and perhaps even her own existence might be forfeit. ?Hunter, how nice of you to come early.? She materialized on the roof beside him. ?Something urgent brings you out so early??
Byron nodded, ?Yes, there is new information; one of our women has seen a black cloaked figure that shoved her out of touch with her own brother. I hoped that would be the image that would tell you for certain whether we are dealing with Le Noir, or not.?
Belle took the image from Byron?s thoughts, and if it was possible for the vampire to pale, she did. Her voice was barely audible even to Byron, ?That is Le Noir. She has awakened, it is true.?
Byron reached for Ariel and Raven, giving them the confirmation that they were in fact dealing with the Mother of All Darkness.
Belle was soon surrounded by her creations, the vampires who protected her. She was the Sangue du Source, and she held absolute power over them, and through that connection they all felt her tremble. Belle studied Byron, ?She must be locked in light, always, with now crevasse, no possible failure of light, or she will be able to escape. The spells must be failing, for otherwise she should not awaken, much less be able to push you apart from your own blood.?
Byron studied Belle several minutes. ?Will you help us?? He hated having to ask a vampire for help. His life had been devoted to sending vampyres to their last and final rest. It was a bitter taste in his mouth to now ask one to help them.
Belle knew what it cost Byron to ask. They had been enemies since her kind was created, but sometimes a greater evil compelled enemies to band together, if only for a short time. ?There will be a cost for my help mon ami. You cannot expect me to help you and then have you turn around to destroy what I have created here.?
Byron knew that was coming. ?Name your price Belle, we are losing precious time.? He heard Jacques? hiss of disapproval, but there was really no choice. Belle had been there when Le Noir had been imprisoned before. She was their only hope now to keep her from returning to the world and wreaking a terrible havoc.
Belle gave him the kind of smile that a snake must give a mouse right before it strikes. ?Come, let us be civilized about our negotiations. The roof top is not my idea of comfort, come inside where we may negotiate properly.? She intended put Byron out of his element and take full advantage of her position. The Carpathians needed her, and she would make full use of that need.
Byron shook his head, ?Perhaps the roof is not so comfortable, but we must find neutral ground Belle.?
She pouted in a calculated moue designed to gain Byron?s acquiescence. Byron rose then, ?May I propose Ile de la Cit?, the Park will be nearly deserted.?
Belle gave a dramatic sigh, ?Oui, if you insist.? She rose then and motioned for Byron to lead on, she did not want the Hunter behind her.
The western end of the Ile has held a palace since Merovingian times, and its eastern end since the same period has been consecrated to religion. Byron knew that Belle would not want to go to the eastern end of the Ile, but the Palace had seen more than its share of vampires in residence during the decadent eras of French monarchies. Byron reformed at the The Place Dauphine. This palace had been constructed in 1609 and was named after Louis XIII when he was still the Dauphin. Byron glanced around at the Ile, and noted that very little had changed in this district from the way it looked when the Palace was constructed. The streets remained as they had. It was the oldest district in Paris.
Belle gave a delicate shudder as she looked toward the far end of the Ile where the Cathedral of Notre Dame de Paris stood. The cathedral was built in 1163 on the site of a church dedicated to Saint ?tienne. During the French Revolution, the Cathedral had been badly damaged, but was restored by Viollet-le-Duc. Belle had never forgiven Viollet-le-Duc for that and had seen the man to a very bad end. She moved toward the central square, away from the Cathedral.
There were several people still about when they arrived and Belle made it clear to her attendants that there would be no killing here this night. They needed to feed, but they were prohibited from hunting upon Ile tonight. Byron gave her a nod of approval as they selected a spot away from the street lamps. ?Your help is requested Belle because so much is at stake, so state your conditions.? Byron was not of a mind to drag out the negotiations, though he suspected that Belle was looking forward to drawing out the terms of her assistance.
Belle settled with an elegance born of centuries of practice. ?M. Justicano, vous savez que mon aide me placera dans le p?ril s?rieux. Particuli?rement si nous ?chouons, ou si nous sommes trop en retard pour l'arr?ter Le Noir ? sa prison.? She sat in the night watching Byron as she spoke.
Byron nodded, he knew they were all in grave danger if Le Noir broke free of her prison, and those who attempted to keep her there would suffer her malice first. ?Yes, but we are all in grave danger if Le Noir escapes, and Belle, she knows you were there for her first imprisonment, so you will be one of her first targets. It is in your best interest to assist us now, before she can escape.?
Belle gave him a flicker of a smile, ?Oui, le noir a un trempe terrible. S'il y avait une autre mani?re, je ne vous aiderais pas. Mais, elle a tourn? son attention sur vos personnes, et il me semblerait que vous ?tes dans le danger le plus imm?diat, pas I.?
Byron glanced at the velvet black sky above them, ?You are correct, for the moment she is focused on my people, but she will come after you Belle. What do you want from us as the price for your knowledge?? He turned black eyes on her then.
Belle reached for Byron?s arm, and he forced himself into stillness rather than pull away, ?I want the Hunters to leave my city and my cadre alone for the next century.? She watched Byron as she spoke.
Byron flinched, to knowingly walk away from the heart of one of the oldest vampire groups in Europe for an entire century seemed an abomination, but he was not really surprised by her demand. ?Is that all?? He watched her, knowing she was playing some kind of cat and mouse game with him, but at this point, only she knew what the goal was.
Belle?s fingertips walked lightly up Byron?s forearm, ?Aucun mon cher, celui n'est seulement le commencement.? Her eyes glittered in the faint starlight, but the darkness poses no disadvantage to either of them. ?I desire a meeting with your Prince when he is freed from her grasp, and that he will grand me one boon.?
Byron stilled. ?What boon would you ask of our Prince? You know that I cannot promise you anything on behalf of our Prince.?
Shea stirred in Byron?s mind then. She would advise Raven of this request and see what the Prince?s mate had to say about that.
?Mon ami,? Belle smiled, ?I would have my boon or you will not have my help.? It was a mirthless smile that she gave him as they sat there, negotiating the price of Belle?s help for hours. ?Surely the continued existence of you Hunters is reason enough to pay my price.?
Byron winced, if Belle was looking at this problem that way, her boon from their Prince would be huge. Raven touched on his thoughts, *We do not know enough to secure Le Noir, we need her Byron.* Byron schooled his features when he looked at Belle, ?You will have your meeting Belle, AFTER Le Noir is once more safely bound.?
Belle smiled and revealed long, very sharp canine teeth, ?Then we are in accord.? She offered Byron her hand, which he very aristocratically took and almost brushed with his lips in a kiss to seal their accord. ?We must join our forces quickly, tonight if possible,? Belle told him abruptly. ?Time is leaving us weaker and Le Noir stronger. Where may we meet your fellows to coordinate our plan??
Ariel
Byron hated this collaboration, but Belle was right. They needed a coordinated attack to send Le Noir back into her prison, this time to stay if they could manage it. Belle would know what was done before, this time perhaps they could seal the weakness that was even now allowing Le Noir to awaken.
He would have to grant Belle his blood to be able to share a mental pathway, and once opened, such things could not be closed. Shea?s voice reached for him, ?Let me come to you, let the path be to me, and not to you.?
Byron shook his head; he would not allow one of the Carpathian females to be a link to an abomination such as Belle. Shea hissed softly at his thoughts. It did not take her long to figure out where Byron was, and Shea winged her way to the roof top before she reformed at the front doors of the fine home. Her knock on the doors brought two surprised vampires to answer the unexpected guest summons.
Shea gave the two vampires a curt nod, ?I am here to speak with Belle and Byron. My name is Shea.? She did not add her Dubrinsky name, it would tie her too closely to the Prince, and she wasn?t willing to be so free with that affiliation. Not just yet.
She was escorted into the main salon where she found Belle in discussion with Byron and two other vampires. Two that she could feel power radiating from. They were old. Not as old as Belle, but old enough to be very dangerous. She walked in just in time to hear Belle coo to Byron, ?Ah, you would only offer me your wrist for such a partnership of significance mon cher??
Shea?s blood went cold at the utter sexuality in Belle?s voice, the meaning so very plain. Belle wanted to make this exchange more than part of a business deal. ?Forgive my poor timing Byron, but I have come as promised.?
Belle?s gaze snapped toward the unfamiliar female voice and red flames flared brightly in her too calculating eyes. ?Who are you??
Byron rose, giving Shea a courtly bow, ?You should not have come, Shea. But now that you are here, we were just about to open a channel of communication with the others.?
Shea nodded, ?Good, I am just in time then. Allow me to be the channel Byron, it is safer for everyone.? Shea?s dark eyes locked on Belle then. ?It will be my blood you take for this meeting Belle.?
Belle rose then and made her way with the sinuous grace of an experienced seductress as she slowly circled around Shea. From behind her, she leaned in and whispered, ?Ma cheri, I have no preference, male or female, but I will enjoy this properly for the gravity of the situation.?
Shea fought the urge to kill the vampire at her back, ?You will have my wrist and a kiss of peace, nothing more, nothing less.?
Belle pouted beautifully, it was a well practiced expression, ?And I thought you Carpathians were sensual creatures.?
The blood exchange was accomplished despite Belle?s desire for more carnality in the event, and soon 12 Carpathians and 1 vampire were engaged in discussing how Le Noir had been sealed in before. Raven remained almost silent, in the Prince?s current condition, it was understood that she would speak for him. She would not sway the discussions.
As dawn began to approach, the conclave reached agreement on how to proceed. Belle would not be able to participate as the Carpathian?s could work in the early dawn and dusk, and they would waste no time now that they had history and a plan.
Belle enveloped Shea into her arms, as a lover would, her cold lips brushing velvet over Shea?s carotid artery, ?So sweet, so tempting, it is a pity you will not allow me.? Then she placed a cool kiss there, but the fangs never touched the soft skin. She moved then to Byron, who stiffened at her approach. ?And you Carpathian, so tormented and not knowing what it is you are missing by keeping your ?honor? intact. You would be welcome in my family.? She drew him down for a velvet kiss before she vanished from the room, and the other vampires followed her lead.
Shea and Byron were alone. ?Time is running short, we must go.? Shea felt the taint of the vampire?s touch, the unclean feeling of having been bled. She would have Jacques check to make certain she had not left any of her vile creations within her blood. They needed to weave the spell and wards to keep Le Noir where she was. The rest would wait.
Time was fleeting and every moment lost allowed Le Noir to grow stronger. The Aurigans pooled their resources and their power. Gregory joined in from distant lands only he knew the location of.
Their chant resonated through the Aurigan links. Drawing each member of their people together, focusing their strength toward the one goal of reinforcing the jail that housed Le Noir.
Their song rippled through their bodies and their minds. It drew power and strength before they turned the focus onto Le Noir.
Blackness shot outward toward them all, but they were too many, and she was spread too thin for her power to break anyone's concentration. Fury echoed through the blackness. But as the chant continued, the power of that fury receded, slowly.
Raven suddenly felt her mate, solid and whole of mind joining the chant. They had pushed Le Noir back, away from the Prince, who even now added his power to the song that wove the wards around the Mother of All Darkness.
Finally there was silence. Nothing fought against the spells. Nothing touched and tainted the thoughts of the males. Le Noir was once again sealed away.
Fury. It was the thing that consumed him. It drove him mercilessly. The only thing that mattered was tearing down the wards, getting to the woman beyond that continued to poke at his thoughts.
Blood lust. Drink it all! Savor each adrenaline laced drop until there was no more.
Gabriel had been consumed thusly since his rising.
And then came the chant. Dimly at first. But it grew and swelled in his mind, driving back the haze.
Gone. The driving need abruptly vanished, leaving Gabriel exhausted and sick with the memories.
The Palazzo was silent in the deep reaches of the basements. Gabriel fled to the wilds miles and miles from humanity. Memories haunting him of the battle he had nearly lost. That darkness threatened to consume him even now where he lay deep within the ground of the desert.
Gabriel was only dimly aware of the passage of time. The days blended one into another as he remained where he was. Now and then he would sense the beat of a heart, or the fleeting hint of consciousness. Days or months, he did not know which, passed before hunger forced him from his resting place.
He reached for Ariel and felt her tremble. He had become a monster, even if he had not become Vampyre. He let her go, closing their communication path tightly before he rose into the night air. He needed to feed.
Lucien was present in his twin?s thoughts, remaining silent and watchful. This would be the test. Could Gabriel feed without the desire to kill? He waited as his twin searched the desert for a meal.
Gabriel found a group of hikers camping on the edge of a canyon. Their campfire and laughter drew the Aurigan to them unerringly. With practiced ease, Gabriel drew them all into his thrall and fed lightly from each one. It was not enough, but Gabriel did not dare sate his hunger, and chose to err on the side of too little rather than too much. Reluctantly, he left them sitting around their fire in good health and with no memory of his presence among them.
Lucien stirred then, ?Gabriel, if you have need, you know I am here.?
Gabriel gave a wry laugh, ?I knew you were there, thank you.? He winged his way further into the desert, ?I cannot return to the city Lucien, it provided too much temptation. Tell the Marchioness that the time is close when I shall need her to fulfill her promise to me.?
Lucien frowned, ?What promise? She is not in RhyDin Gabriel, she has returned to Rigel for an unknown length of time.?
Gabriel stopped in mid flight, hovering above a dry creek bed, ?Who is with her since you are here and so am I?? His vows to protect her had taken root deeply, but he had assumed that Lucien watched over her while he was sleeping. Clearly if she was gone and Lucien and he were here, his expectations were false.
?The Prince sent Dominik with her; he felt she should go while you slept.? Lucien did not know how his twin would take that news. Gabriel never trusted the Seekers. Magic users with his own powers have been avoided and shunned for many centuries.
?I will go to Rigel then.? Finality was in his tone and words as he turned his flight toward the city. ?She took the Dragon?? Gabriel would have to find another vessel to get him to Rigel, but he would commandeer whatever he could. The Seeker needed to be moving on and not in the company of his human.
?Gabriel, perhaps we should take you home to Auriga first.? Lucien knew a moment of uncertainty at letting his twin go directly to the Marchioness. What if he could not control the blood lust?
?She will fulfill her responsibility to me Lucien if I cannot control the demon that shrieks for release inside of me.? Gabriel answered his brother with confidence. ?She knows how to do what must be done.?
?I will advise Baumann that you are coming then.? Lucien knew he could not stop his twin; this was something he would do as his responsibility to protect her was as strong as his need for blood. Lucien fervently hoped the Marchioness was up to the challenge she would face if Gabriel could not control his demon within.
