Azjah had been running around RhyDin and decided to stop for lunch at Teas n Tomes. The snow had blanketed the city in a deep layer of glistening white, and Azjah was thoroughly enjoying being able to walk in the winter wonderland that the city had become. She entered the small shop and ordered her lunch and a cup of cranberry tea before climbing the stairs to take a table at the balcony railing that overlooked the front windows and the door. As she sat for a moment, she noted that just outside the windows, the local florist was busily decorating the businesses along the street. She wrapped both hands around the cup of tea and realized that she had not yet given Dyson any direction for the upcoming season.

This year she would have something to decorate for, a reason to dress the Palazzo in festive decorations. She and Wil would be spending the holiday together, it would be their first Yule, and that was reason enough to decorate the house. She hadn?t done anything for the two years that Klinton had been absent, but it was time to enjoy the season once more. She decided then to begin holiday preparations.

She finished her lunch, then made her way down the stairs, and headed for the flower shop to begin holiday trimming. It would, she hoped, be a pleasant surprise for Wil. She had no idea if he even celebrated Yule, she had never traveled to Schedar, and that brought her up short. Could she incorporate any of his home-world?s traditions? Did they even have any that matched the season here? That would need to be investigated, but for now, she could begin with the basics.

The flower shop?s owner was behind the counter when she opened the door and stepped inside. The scent of flowers and candles permeated the shop and Azjah closed her eyes briefly to savor the complex atmosphere. Elaine chuckled seeing her reaction, ?Marchioness, what a pleasant surprise, do come in. How may I help you??

Azjah opened her eyes with a smile, ?Good morning Elaine, you can help me prepare for the upcoming Yule season. I am of a mind to decorate this year.? Azjah glanced around at how the shop was decorated, noting the new colors and textures for the year. She had not paid attention until now, and found the shop a source of inspiration.

Elaine?s countenance perked considerably as she motioned for Azjah to follow her into her office, ?What kind of project did you have in mind?? They sat down around a table in her office where her more lucrative business dealings usually took place. What Elaine wanted to ask her was what had motivated her into decorating again, but she held her silence.

Azjah sat down in the comfortable chair across from Elaine, ?I would like to incorporate several themes into decorating the Palazzo this year; some local flavor, some Rigelian, and if I can find anything useful, something reminiscent of Schedar. With that being said, let?s start with trimming the exterior of the Palazzo first. I would like to have the front of the Palazzo trimmed with roping and lights. Amber lights, no white ones. Let?s use a blend of white pine and balsam fir as the exterior roping. Swag the windows and doors, wrap the columns, and run a border along the eaves of the house. Ribbons should be gold and deep, deep burgundy with very long tails. Not a red burgundy, but a dark, almost wine red.? She thought for a bit longer, ?Seventy two inch wreath above the front entry, trimmed with amber lights, and gold trim. The others for the windows and portico should be sixty inch diameter, all trimmed in amber and gold.?

Elaine was writing as she spoke, already pleased with this order. It was going to be a big project, and she would have to hire someone to begin making the meters of greenery that would be required, but the Marchioness was a good customer, so that did not bother her. ?Would you care for a cup of mulled wine while we work??

Azjah leaned forward, ?Actually, that does sound very good Elaine, thank you.? Azjah gathered her thoughts for inside the Palazzo while the proprietress went to retrieve the mulled wine. Upon her return; Azjah took the cup and glanced at Elaine, ?Do you have time to make custom interior roping??

Elaine lifted a brow, ?Well, that would depend on just how custom you wanted to make it, and how much you are going to require. Why don?t you tell me what you have in mind?? Secretly, she was thrilled, and would do whatever it took to satisfy her requests. Something had put the Marchioness in a good mood for the holidays, and that would translate into a big, big order.

Azjah smiled, ?I would like to hang a combination of Noble Fir and Blue Feather Cedar with a touch of variegated ivy for roping in the Great Room and foyer, the dining room, master suite, and along the edge of the garden roof in the central part of the Palazzo. For the rest of the house; use a blend of white pine, blue cedar and winterberry. Above each mantle, the mix should be simply Noble Fir and Blue Cedar.? She paused, as though counting, ?There are 8 fireplaces that will require swags. Please be certain they almost reach the floor on the ends, and have generous swagging between fixing points.?

Elaine wrote quickly in a form of short hand that Azjah could not make out, but the numbers were clear as she used her experience to draft rough lengths that would be needed to bring Azjah?s descriptions to life.

Azjah paused to consider, ?Let?s keep with the golden amber lights rather than white ones for inside this year as well. Gold and burgundy are such warm, inviting colors. We shall keep the theme throughout the house for this year.? The golden amber lights reminded her of Schedar, which is a spectral class K0 IIIa star, which makes it almost an amber orange color. But orange wasn?t a color normally associated with Yule, so this was her concession to starting to include a blending of Rigelian and Schedarian influences on this first holiday together.

Elaine glanced up from her writing, ?Those are very old fashioned colors Marchioness, are you certain you would like to stick with those? There are some wonderful new colors available this year, and the hot color for this year is sort of a bronzy-purple, that is very distinctive. And I know I can obtain enough to decorate your rooms the way you like them.?

Azjah smiled, ?No, thank you Elaine. This year I want to be traditional.? She sipped the mulled wine thoughtfully, ?Let?s do the garlands for the roping in ivory pearls and gold beads, keep the ornaments to glass in shades of gold this year. I know the velvet and parchments are widely used, but this year we?ll do the colored glass alone.?

Elaine picked up a line and spoke rapidly to someone in the back of the shop before looking once more at Azjah. ?Do you desire a tree for the Great Room?? She had never delivered a tree to the Marchioness, but perhaps since she was doing so much decorating this year, conceivably that would change as well.

Azjah paused, she had not put a tree up since she lived on Rigel and her parents were alive. The last great tree had been a silver fir that Ozeana had decorated in silver and blue. That was a pain that she was not ready to challenge by putting up an indoor tree this year. ?No, I do not believe an inside tree would be appropriate, however, there are several places outside where we could decorate with the lights and ribbons to have that part of tradition accomplished.? The evergreens out on the property would do just as well, and not bring the pain associated with an inside and festively decorated tree would bring.

Elaine nodded and made a note to take her greens manager with her to go to the Palazzo for photos of the property and to obtain the final measurements for the roping. Elaine then asked her, ?Now, what about table decorations or centerpieces? Anything special that you had in mind??

Azjah chuckled, ?Of course, what is Yule without all of the trimmings? The entry foyer will require two floor arrangements; they should be at least 2 meters in height. I would like to see some of the red ginger used in these, as well as the Noble fir and Blue Cypress, the remainder I leave to your discretion. The great room central table can take an arrangement not to exceed 1 meter diameter, but could be as much as 1.5 meters in height. Keep with the red ginger as a theme for all of the arrangements, and I adore white genestra if you can obtain it. Candles, lots of them in ivory and greens should be used liberally. I want a complex scent that is mostly evergreen and bayberry, but with a hint of ginger, stephanotis and perhaps an insinuation of cloves. Spices more than florals, would be a good rule of thumb when creating the scents for the house.? Azjah was running through a rough mental list as she sat with Elaine. ?How soon can you begin work??

Elaine smiled, ?We have the perfect 10? diameter pillar candles for you, and I think you will love the scents they come in! The sizes are perfect for the spaces your home entails.? She studied the list for several moments, ?I need to come measure today if you don?t mind, and based on just guesswork so far, it will be about four days before I can actually begin to hang roping and decorate. Will that fit your agenda?? She had trimmed the house in past years, and if her memory served, the exterior alone would take nearly 200 meters of roping. The inside another 180 meters, but the inside roping was all custom work that she could not order from any wholesaler in RhyDin. It would keep several people busy for the next week.

Azjah nodded, ?Yes, four days is adequate. However, do not forget in your planning that we have the suites beneath the Palazzo as well. The roping, and evergreens, and candles should extend into Gabriel and Lucien?s realm. Perhaps if you run into either Topaz or Lucien, they can provide you with their own requests, but we can get started with the basics for now.?

Azjah was already focusing on her next stop. The florist was simply the first of several shops that she would need to visit before she headed back to warn Dyson that this year they would be joining in the Yule celebrations. Azjah gave a quick glance at Elaine, ?Mistle? Do you have enough to assure that each doorway has a nice ball with many berries, trimmed with gold and burgundy ribbons??

Elaine thought for a minute, ?I will have to obtain fresh. What I have at the moment I would not want to hang, you would soon hang me for using it, but I will make sure that you have fresh mistle for your home.?

Azjah chuckled as she wondered if Wil had ever heard of the traditions associated with mistle. There was of course the tradition of the Scandinavians?, who are credited with the most popular custom surrounding mistletoe. Their custom states that any two people who meet under a hanging of mistletoe are obliged to kiss. But for each kiss; one berry must be plucked off the plant, and when the berries are gone, so too is the privilege of kissing beneath the mistletoe. But there are many cultures that have incorporated the use of mistletoe into their Yule seasons. The Romanians deemed mistletoe to be a source of good fortune. The Druids harvested mistletoe by the light of a full moon with a golden sickle to preserve its power as a symbol of immortality. And some Celts believed that the fruit of the mistletoe, which fruits during the time of the Winter Solstice, cured barrenness. But Azjah had to admit, it was the Scandinavian tradition that now lured her into decorating the Palazzo with the poisonous plant, and looking forward to explaining the tradition to Wil.

They finalized a few more details, and Azjah rose to leave. Elaine had agreed to come that afternoon to measure inside and out, and undoubtedly, the florist would recognize that something had been forgotten when she came for the measurements.

Azjah departed from the flower shop and made her way along the street toward the local Chocolatier. One of Rigel?s traditions for the season was to hide chocolates filled with unexpected sweet surprises. Usually the sweet surprise was fruit or a cordial of fruit, though in recent times, the fillings had become any favorite confection desired. She stepped inside, and was instantly assailed with the scent of rich chocolate. The girl behind the counter was busy with another client, and Azjah took a slow walk along the display of freshly made chocolate treats. Master Stradinger was known as one of the best, and judging from the appearance of the chocolates in the display case, he was indeed very talented at his craft. The key would be whether or not they could get the Rigelian chocolate in time, and still manage to mold and create this specialty item to welcome in the New Year. Azjah mused a moment, what if they couldn?t make them from her world?s chocolate? Could she substitute? No, this year it HAD to be Rigelian chocolate for the surprise. She had never tasted chocolate like Rigelian. There had been some that came moderately close, but this was the first Yule with Wil, and it simply had to be Rigelian chocolate.

When the previous customer had departed, the girl turned to Azjah, ?May I help you ma?am??

Azjah set about explaining to the girl what she wanted, and the timing for it. The girl?s expression was uncertain, and she called for the shop owner, who Azjah guessed must be her father for the resemblance they bore one another. ?Master Stradinger, if I could arrange a delivery of Rigelian semisweet chocolate, can you create these for me and deliver a week before Yule?? Azjah described the creation of the Rigelian sweets, the semisweet exterior always hid a sweet center, usually of a cordial, and Azjah knew the Chambord would be a hit with Wil. Raspberries and semisweet chocolate should be just the right combination and surprise for him. The other special aspect of these was that inside the liqueur should be a fresh raspberry, or hazel nut, or orange rind. That was part of what made these so different from just a filled chocolate shell.

Master Stradinger listened, ?If you can get me this Rigelian chocolate, I can have them formed and filled and delivered in time, but mind you, the chocolate must be here before the end of next week.? His implication was clear, if she did not deliver, he could not deliver.

Azjah gave him a radiant smile, ?I will have it here well before the end of next week. So we can have the Chambord, the Grand Marnier, the Champagne, and the Hazelnut for certain?? At his nod, she smiled, ?I shall leave the remaining fillings to your expert choice as long as the order is heavily favoring these four.? They agreed on the price for individually wrapping each chocolate in a color keyed wrapper so that Azjah would know what flavor was within. She sent the order off to Baumann and indicated the urgency of the timing. These would be hidden around the house in various places for people to ?find?. She chuckled, this was a tradition she would have to explain to the household staff, for they would not simply enjoy them, they would collect them and that defeated the purpose. Explaining it to Wil would be even more fun! She was smiling to herself at the thought of how she would introduce this tradition to him.

By Rigelian custom, whomever found the wrapped treat was supposed to close their eyes, make a wish, and then consume the chocolate without opening their eyes until it was gone. The history of this went back for many centuries, but as far as Azjah knew, it was part of the traditions associated with bringing in a ?sweeter? New Year. But she very much doubted that anyone in RhyDin had ever heard of the tradition, so it would be up to her to share the story right before she hid all of the treats. Then she laughed, Topaz would be very busy with all of the wishing going on inside the Palazzo this Yule.

She left the Chocolatier and stepped into the cold afternoon air. Where was she going to obtain a proper Yule log? On Rigel, she knew where, it was a popular custom, but RhyDin? She frowned as she looked up and down the street. A Yule log was definitely a requirement. It was part of the winter fire festival, and Yule without an Ash log would be unthinkable. The Ashen Faggot is a very old West-country tradition that at one time was widely seen on Rigel. The custom is considered to date back to Saxon times; however, it is thought to have come originally from Scandinavia, where at their feast of 'joul' they would burn huge bonfires in honour of their god Thor. The Ash tree was regarded as the 'tree of life' in Norse mythology. The Tree of Life holds special meaning in many, many cultures, her own included. It was believed on Rigel that any household that did not burn the Ashen faggot would be in for a year?s worth of bad luck and misfortune.

?Ash Yule logs,? she was musing aloud when she walked past a vendor set up to sell the pine trees that had been cut and prepared for people to put into their homes for a short period. A middle aged woman reached for her arm, to impede her path, ?Yer lookin? fer ash logs? We ken getcha one.?

Azjah was unused to having anyone touch her, let alone a merchant impeding her path. She took a step back from the woman and gave her a long look. ?You have Ash Yule logs?? She did not believe for a moment that this woman could provide what she sought.

?Yes mum, O?er here, inside fer protectin? from the weather. We gots ?m sure enough.? The woman was clearly cold, her coat was not nearly warm enough for the weather, and she wore no mittens or boots.

Hard times have been her lot, and Azjah mastered her initial anger at having been so rudely grabbed on the street. ?Alright, may I see them?? It certainly couldn?t hurt to have a look, and judging from her appearance, they needed the patronage. The woman led her into a tent like structure and toward the back lay several large logs. Each had been bound in ashen withies with smaller branches of ash and in the top holes had been bored for the candles that would be set into them. Azjah glanced at the woman then, ?How much are they, and can you have them delivered?? They were about 40cm in diameter, and nearly 2 meters long, which meant they would burn for the period of time required, and they had indeed been properly bound which impressed her immensely. As she studied them, the history of the Ashen Faggot flew there her mind, ?bound with green withies, or green willow branches, which is then placed onto the fire. As each binding bursts, the watchers toast it with a drink. Some traditions had the unmarried women each choosing a withy, and the first one whose tie snapped would be married the next year.?

?They be 30 silvers each ma?am, an? fer another 5 silvers each, I ken get?em delivered, sure.? She seemed almost afraid of her pricing and Azjah nodded, ?I shall require 8 of them then.? The woman?s face went completely blank with surprise and finally she repeated the order. Azjah nodded, ?Yes, 8 please, have them delivered to Palazzo Drachen Walde.? Once the transaction was completed, Azjah headed back into the snowy streets.

She was homeward bound now, there was a great deal to share with Dyson now that she had come to the decision she had.

Azjah

Azjah arrived at the Palazzo about the same time Wil did, and as they entered the house, she linked an arm in his, ?Wil? Since we will be here for Yule, and it is our first holiday together, I have decided to decorate the house and embrace the festivities associated with the holiday, but I find that I do not know if you even celebrate such a holiday. Did you have a winter celebration on Schedar??

She hoped that he did, it would make their enjoyment that much greater. Once they were inside, Dyson met them at the door and Azjah handed him her jacket and requested his presence in the library to put the finishing touches on her plans for Yule. In the mean time, Wil had begun to talk about the winter festivals from his home.

Wil smiled at the thought of their first Yule together. This had been a year filled with firsts, and he was sure there?d be many more to come. He looked at Azjah and shrugged, ?The human sacrifices were a big part of our celebrations. Every year one family from each neighborhood was responsible for the sacrifice for that neighborhood.? He looked at Azjah and saw the shocked look upon her face, and then he broke into laughter and took her into his arms. ?I?m so bad. How do you put up with me? Of course, I?m only joking.? He pulled back to look into her eyes with such admiration. ?Truthfully, I?m afraid Schedar was not very much into winter holidays in the way that many civilizations are. We never had snow or the religious traditions that could be compared to what is the traditional Yule season. However. . .? he paused only briefly, not wanting Azjah to be disappointed, ?I?ve spent considerable time on Rhydin, and some time on Earth and similar planets, and I?ve come to know and appreciate the Yule celebrations. In fact, with the right alcoholic beverages nearby, I think I could do a pretty darn good job with decorating. That is, if you would like any help.? He gave her a wink and kissed those soft lips.

Azjah reigned in her initial shock at his human sacrifice comment and leaned close enough to brush a kiss to his lips, ?Name the right alcoholic beverage and I shall promptly put you to work. I would love to see your handiwork.? At the slight knock on the door, she straightened once more and beckoned Dyson inside.

Azjah sat on a dusty blue moir? settee in front of the fireplace with Wil when Dyson arrived. ?Come in Dyson, we have decided to make this year?s Yule celebration a memorable one, and we shall need your assistance to accomplish.? Azjah slid her hand into Wil?s as they began to discuss the fine points of a proper Yule celebration. ?There will be 8 Yule logs delivered this weekend, but they should remain outside until it is time to light them. The florist will be here this afternoon to measure for roping and arrangements.? She glanced at Wil with an impish grin, ?And, I have a surprise for everyone in the Palazzo.?

Dyson dutifully made his notes, but at her announcement of a surprise, he glanced up at her. ?Ich nehme an, dass Sie nicht uns erkl?ren werden, was die ?berraschung diesmal ist?? He was never fond of surprises, but somehow he suspected that the Marchioness intended to enjoy keeping one, at least for a short time.

Azjah shot Dyson a grin filled with the joy of the season, and the secrets this time of year engendered. ?Nein, werde ich dieses bestimmte Geheimnis bis den Vorabend der Winter-Sonnenwende halten.? She had absolutely no intention of sharing her chocolate surprise just yet. Then she leaned closer to Wil and whispered, ?This surprise is even for you my dear.? Then she kissed him before glancing once again at Dyson. ?There are some specialty foods I would like to make certain that Andre plans to prepare for the holiday. The stolen is a must, and make certain Andre understands the recipe from Rigel and not one from his home world.? She shuddered briefly at the first attempt the Chef had made on one of her favorite holiday breads.

?For Alban Arthan we simply must have Cua Ram Muoi.? Azjah gave Wil a wink, ?crab claws that have been saut?ed in garlic before being rolled in tomato paste and served over baby Bibb lettuce.? Azjah knew Wil had a great love of sea food, so she added Gingered Prawns and Ragout de Homard aux Morilles for the week?s meal list. The Ragout of Lobster with Morels was one of Azjah?s personal favorites. The Chef would insist on something with oysters for New Year, and she chose grilled oysters with ginger lime dressing. The last bit of seafood she chose was Shanghai Velvet Scallops, she knew Wil have a fondness for the oriental rice wines, and the Shaohsing rice wine was the perfect sauce for the scallops.

Azjah felt there was enough seafood in the week long menu and changed to red meat and vegetables. It was the season for parsnips, and she wanted those served with venison. Azjah smiled at Dyson, ?Duck with apricots too, as for the remainder, it shall be up to Andre?s taste.

?And lastly, but not least on the list, we must have Pfeffernuss!? Azjah had a weakness for the small, round gingerbread biscuits that were only available at this season, and she made certain to get her request in early.

?I am not certain what Topaz will desire for something special, but I am certain Lucien can enlighten us on some of her favorite things.? She knew that Lucien and Gabriel, and indeed even Dominik would not eat any of the holiday foods, but Topaz could, and they were all part of the household, which meant finding something special for each and every one of them. She would ask Lucien the next time she saw him about what would be the perfect surprise for Topaz.

Then she looked at Wil, ?What special memories do you have in terms of food that you would like to have prepared this year?? Azjah knew that Wil had never shown a reticence to eat almost anything that she proposed to him, as evidenced by their wager earlier that year. But if he had some fond memory of something special, she wanted to include it for this year?s festivities.

He thought about the question a moment. Her question ultimately brought a melancholy upon him that he had not felt in a good long time. He was beginning to realize more and more that his regimented life had excluded him from many things that most people value highly. ?My father was military and seldom home, and I guess because of that and the general nature of life on Schedar, I have few memories that I would categorize as special.? He shrugged again and gave her a winsome smile, ?Will you help me start to have special memories and traditions? Will you teach me??

Azjah leaned back and rested against Wil?s shoulder as she considered what he had just asked her to do. She reached up to lightly caress his cheek, ?I want us to make our own special traditions and memories,? she smiled then, ?I can teach you mine, but I think the fun will be in making our own.?

Azjah remained comfortably cuddled next to Wil as she thought about the many things she may have missed. Music she would leave to Dyson, but there was one thing she would have to do herself, and her brow furrowed as she thought about it. She had absolutely no idea what to get Wil for Yule. The warmth of his body was a lure that she unconsciously gravitated toward as they sat there, millimeter by millimeter she relaxed into him, as though soaking up the heat he radiated. At length, she turned to look up at him with a hint of mischief, ?There is a tradition whereby an elderly gentleman visits each and every house to leave gifts for the occupants if they were very good the previous year. Do you perhaps think you qualify for such a visit??

Wil loved these quiet times alone with Azjah ? the feel and warmth of her body against his, the fragrance of her hair and neck, the look of her long legs running parallel to his. These were the moments he treasured, and he didn?t take any of them for granted. He held Azjah a little tighter and looked toward the ceiling as if he was really giving her question a well thought-out response. ?Well, to be honest darlin?, I really don?t think you can trust anyone over thirty, except maybe Xenograg, and even him I sometimes wonder. I think that old men are a pretty devious group in and of themselves, but one who wishes to visit each and every house has to be up to no good. It might seem like he?s leaving gifts, but I?m sure there?s a payoff somewhere down the line.?

Wil struggled to keep a serious expression, for he had actually heard about the tradition of a Saint Nicholas who bestowed gifts once a year upon those who were deemed to be deserving. ?As far as being good this year, how exactly are you defining ?good?? Is it good at surviving all the calamities that seem to have targeted me since we met? Or is it good at making drinks and swimming in unusual places?? He paused just a bit and smirked with a raising and lowering of his eyebrows, ?Or is it good in bed?? He cleared his throat and quickly moved on, ?Or is it just good in general, as in avoiding unnecessary terminations and such?? He ran his lips across her temple and pulled back to look at her expression.

Azjah couldn?t help but laugh. If the criteria were being good at any of those things, Wil certainly qualified. It was these times that she loved the most. Wil seemed relaxed and happy, and she wanted this to be a sanctuary for him. He brought completeness to her world.

She glanced at Dyson, ?We have a nice collection of Father Christmas figurines, do we not??

Dyson nodded, ?Ja. He had always liked the collection of figures that represented the changing visualization of Father Christmas, Old Man Winter, whatever he had been named around the worlds they had encountered. This year perhaps the Marchioness would make an addition and continue the tradition, although it looked as though such may well end with her even if she made additions to the collection.

Azjah chuckled and glanced up at Wil, ?Does Schedar have a Father Christmas like entity?? He said there was no such reference in his memories, and Azjah knew she would enjoy sharing the rich history of this tradition. Though he knew about RhyDin?s version of Saint Nicholas. She laughed then, he didn?t trust anyone over thirty? She would have to remind him that she was over thirty.

She had listened intently to his description of Schedarian winter festivals. On Rigel we have Alban Arthan rather than Winter Solstice. Allegedly before The Religion grew, the Druids would gather by the oldest Mistletoe clad Oak. They gathered the mistletoe according to long lost rites. The holiday is now observed in a manner that commemorates the death of the Holly King identified with the wren bird (symbolizing the old year and the shortened sun) at the hands of his son and successor, the robin redbreast Oak King (the new year and the new sun that begins to grow). The Battle of the Holly King and Oak King is re-enacted at rituals, both open and closed on an annual basis. The battle is usually in the form of words but it has been known for there to be sword battles. The battle represents the Oak King?s final strike against his brother; The Holly King. The Alban Arthan battle represents the ultimate victory for at least the next six months, when the battle will go the other way.

Azjah was saddened by Wil?s description of Schedar. He had almost no traditions, or family celebrations that he could bring to their first Yule. There had not been family celebrations and times spent in preparing the house for family reunions, no caroling, and that seemed almost a crime to Azjah. She had wanted to blend their traditions to create one of their own, but his was virtually non-existent. So, she would endeavor to expose him to the best parts of her own family?s traditions. This time of year was meant to be spent with those you loved. It was a tradition she fully intended to share with Wil, and if possible, find a way to make up for the years he had missed out on while he was growing up. She paused then, wishing her parents were here to see it.

Dyson heard the chimes announcing a guest at the doors, and he rose, excusing himself.

Azjah glanced at the time, and then at Wil, ?That should be the florist, are you ready to dive into this decorating notion?? She rose and offered him her hand, ?Let?s get you that alcoholic beverage and head for the storage rooms to see what theme you would like to drag out and begin with.? She led Wil along the corridors toward the back side of the Palazzo, and she stopped before a locked door. Her hand covered the sensor that secured the door. A soft hiss sounded and the door slid open and lighting activated.

Azjah gave Wil a smile, ?Enter the world of Yule.? She led him inside and began opening storage containers that were filled with lights, glass ornaments, strings of pearls and beads in multitudes of colors. There were giant snow flakes of white, meters and meters of tulle and lace, gold and silver bullion strands, satin and picot and velvet ribbon still on their rolls, all in multitudes of colors and textures. Another cabinet held velvet ornaments adorned with jewels and metallic braid. There were ivory and gold satin spheres, the room held decades of collected decorations from not only Rigel, but from many worlds the Danaan?s had visited. In another were wooden ornaments, mostly in the shape of musical instruments in shades of burgundy and gold. Rolls of sheet music tied with ribbons lay beside the wooden replicas. There were feathered partridges, cardinals and fanciful birds of every shape and color. She had opened each cabinet and box, then turned with a grin to Wil, ?Where would you like to begin??

Wil?s first thought was with a, ?How about a good stiff drink?, but instead he looked into the boxes and perused them once more. ?I think I should keep away from the snowflakes.? He tapped his chin. ?Okay, the long stuff should go up first, then the smaller ornaments.? He picked up the strings of pearls and beads and looked at them. ?I?ll do these first, then the ornaments,? he replied with a smile.

Wil was surrounded in color and texture here. There were delicate, clear blown glass ornaments, colorful painted glass, even multicolored blown glass ornaments surrounding them. Everything separated into color themes, but the largest sections were the silver and blue, and the burgundy and gold. The green and gold storage area was shared with bronze colors as well. There was some bright red, but it was not in great abundance. A peach and turquoise cabinet sat beside the white and silver. To the right of that was a container of deep teal green and peacock blue decorations.

Inside one large cabinet stood figures in varying heights and styles of dress of the Father Christmas that Azjah had asked Wil about earlier. Azjah reached for the tallest figure that was dressed in burgundy coat edges in a mink like fur, and a matching hat. It held a wooden walking stick that was trimmed with golden ribbons. The ceramic boots were polished black and peeked from beneath the coat. At his feet rested a deer fawn, a rabbit, and a bird sat perched atop the walking stick. Bright blue eyes peered back at Wil and Azjah. ?This is my best impression of Father Winter, or Santa Claus as some call him.?

Dyson appeared some hours later bearing a tray with hot tea and two small bowls of fresh fruit dusted with chopped pecans. He felt that sorting through the storage room was hungry work, and he set the tray down on a side table. ?Your Grace? The florist has left with measurements and instructions. Is there anything else you would like for today??

Azjah shook her head, ?No Dyson, we are about to wrap up here, and I know you still have errands of your own. Good evening Dyson.? The elderly Major Domo inclined his head and slipped from the storage room.

Azjah was exhausted. They had poked through more containers of decorations than she imagined they possessed. She poured the tea and sat down cross legged on top of a low container as she sipped the hot beverage. She watched as Wil continued to poke through all of the decorations, asking questions as he went. She loved his curiosity. He had wondered at their purpose, and where they would put so many. When she explained that they would not use it all, but that the diversity was to allow them to select themes that varied from year to year, he had paused to give her an incredulous look. ?And you only use these for a short time in December?? She gave him a soft laugh, ?Yes, just a couple of weeks.? She could not wait for the actual celebrations to begin. There was so much to share.

Wil had questions about where some had come from, and he studied their crafting as he handled many of them with great care. Azjah was surprised when he spent as much time as he did with the musical instrument replicas, noting his attention to the details of each one. As she watched him explore the room and its treasure trove of decorations, she realized that she did not want Wil to live in his house several blocks away. They were to be wed. As she nibbled on the fruit, she studied Wil.

He paused in his exploration, having sensed that he was being watched. ?You look as though you either have something to ask me, or perhaps are having second thoughts about letting me decorate.? He gave her that bad-boy grin and moved toward where she sat.

As he knelt down beside where she sat, she offered him a bite of a fresh date, ?I have been thinking.? She waited until he had taken a bite before continuing, ?Perhaps you would consider moving into the Palazzo rather than living in your RhyDin home?? Before he could swallow the date, she quickly added, ?Unless you would rather not?..? It was the first time she had ever asked anyone to move in with her, and her heart threatened to stop beating altogether as she waited for his reply.

Azjah?s question, or was it a suggestion, caught him quite off guard. It was not that he had not often thought of them living in the same residence, it was more that he was surprised that she had actually been thinking the same thing. The modest mansion he was living in was just down the street and across from the fountain circle in that part of town, at most a five minute walk. The coincidence that his home was so close to the Palazzo was something he had appreciated the very first time he had gone to the Palazzo to meet the Marchioness. Nevertheless, he was not overly attached to his home. Perhaps it was because it was something that he and Eless had built together in anticipation of their marriage, before she mysteriously disappeared for those months and their relationship disintegrated. Whatever it was, it did not matter. Azjah?s offer brought a pleased smile to his face. Kneeling there in front of her, he leaned in, touched her cheek with his fingertips, and placed a soft kiss upon her lips. He then looked into her light blue eyes and whispered, ?Would tonight be too soon to move in??

He would put his home up for rent as soon as his few private belongings were cleaned out, and either moved to the Palazzo or stored. He did not really have all that much, and the furniture would stay with the house, there was nothing there that he needed. In that moment he came to a new realization that everything he would ever need or want was sitting right there in front of him.

Azjah remembered to breathe again and she gave Wil a tremulous smile, ?No my dear, tonight would not be too soon.? She lightly brushed her cheek against his fingertips. This was going to be a Yule to remember.

Wil Savage looked at the two trunks sitting on the marble floor of the main hallway of his home, and he just shook his head and expelled a quick, short breath that attempted to be a laugh. The sum total of his personal effects, at least those he wished to keep, filled only two small trunks. The I.I.S.C. would have said that was one trunk too many, but here on Rhydin even the poorest residents would have had more belongings than this. Wil was not poor. In fact, he was far from it. He had massive bank accounts on several planets that were noted for their high finance dealing, their security and their confidentiality. These were the accounts that the I.I.S.C. would wire his payments to after each completed assignment. Agents usually didn?t live long, but while they were living they were paid well, lived expensively, and ensured a fine existence for their beneficiaries.

?Please have these delivered to the Palazzo,? he said to Kazuhisa, the last of the three employees who had been keeping the mansion in order.

?Right away, sir,? Kazuhisa said with a bow.

?Oh, and Kazu, make sure that the realtors know the place is now vacant and available for rent or purchase.?

?I will see them before noon, sir.? Kazuhisa again bowed and departed to have the trunks shipped down the street.

Wil took a final glance around his home and he couldn?t help but notice the stark contrast between his furnished yet sterile home, and the warm, welcoming atmosphere of Azjah?s Palazzo. There was something about the Yule season and the festivities and traditions that made a home so much more than just a place to sleep and eat. All his life he had avoided such traditions. He had little time for the frivolities of life and since they were never a part of his life, he hadn?t missed them. Now he was discovering that Azjah was changing all that.

He smiled at the thought of last night and his attempts at helping her decorate the Palazzo. It had actually been an enjoyable time, and he didn?t do such a bad job if he had to say so himself. When they had finished decorating they had sat upon the couch in front of the fire and in the glow of all the lights, and cuddled together with seasonal spiced drinks while conversing softly about the future. Her invitation to move into the Palazzo had been a very pleasant surprise, and he wondered if he had been too quick to respond in the affirmative. He hadn?t bothered to even consider her reputation or safety, but who was he kidding. Even if he had, he would have said yes. Leaving Azjah at night was always something he hated to do.

Then his thoughts drifted to their retiring to her bedroom suite together, both intoxicated far more with each other than with the drinks that had been consumed. He made a mental note that during this season of warmth and peace and closeness, they would have to seriously plan their wedding. He raised a brow in humor and mumbled, ?Or elope.?

Wil donned his leather flight jacket and walked out the door, locking it behind him. It was a cold and blustery morning with the threat of more snow, but he didn?t seem to mind at all. In fact, the walk to his new life was really quite pleasant.

Azjah had been happily surprised by Wil?s sense of color and texture when he had helped decorate the roping. He had been right, the beads and pearls went on after the lights had, then the glass ornaments, and finally the gold bouillon. They had worked for hours doing each of the eight fireplace mantles, and the doorway arches of the house. They still had the stairs and the entries to do, along with the interior garden wall roping, but they had made good progress. Wil had a natural gift for style and balance, which Azjah found a little surprising. She had never imagined that he would have an artistic side.

They finally called it a night and one of the chef?s assistants had brought them Gl?hwein to start the Yule season. Azjah curled up beside Wil on the couch as a small fire crackled in the fireplace of the Great Room, and the amber lights glittered amidst the noble fir roping they had just decorated. As she lifted her mug to clink it lightly against his, ?Gl?hwein has been traditional for centuries on Rigel, it dates back to 1420. It is almost always a red wine base that is heated with cinnamon sticks, vanilla pods, cloves, citrus and sugar.? She smiled and took a sip of the hot wine, ?So the traditions go, the Weihnachts markets are held in the town square for shopping, and many shoppers keep warm by patronizing the Gl?hwein vendors. Many a carol is sung by shoppers who have drunk a little too much in an effort to keep warm.? She cuddled a little closer to Wil?s side, ?The traditional Weihnachts markets have been held since 1434 on Rigel.?

She did her best to describe the winter markets and the open air setting that the vendors and shop keepers supported every year for the last 500 years on Rigel.

The night grew quiet as the staff retired to their own rooms, and Wil and Azjah remained before the fire, their conversation drifted to the future. She was ever so pleased that he had agreed to move into the Palazzo. She didn?t want to consider what might have happened had he said no. She was comfortably warm and the mulled wine had made her just a little fuzzy around the edges, though she wasn?t inebriated, it was more a state of relaxation and contentment as they sat there. The future seemed so far away in some respects, and so close in others.

He rose and offered her his hand as they retired to her suite. It felt right to have him there. She glanced at the Grand Duke's rooms, and the door there had not yet been opened. It would not be tonight either.

The morning came much too soon, and Wil had departed to make arrangements to move his things into the Palazzo. That would give Azjah and Eoin some time to arrange for Wil to be given access to the house. Everything in the house worked on biometrics, and Wil would need the right accesses. Eoin then asked when the Colonel would be available for the microchip, and Azjah hesitated, ?I doubt very much that he will allow you to do that Eoin. It would be a risk that I very much doubt he?ll be willing to take.? She didn?t want to tell the security chief that Wil had a job that made Eoin?s security clearance look like entry level.

?And just how are we going to protect him if we cannot track him?? Eoin objected. ?I will put Trevor on him for now, but we need to have a means of tracking him if he should vanish.?

Azjah rose and walked to the windows, looking out over the vineyards of the Palazzo, which now lay covered in deep snow. ?Eoin, the Colonel will chafe under such protection, is there not something less intrusive you could manage??

Eoin studied her long minutes. ?Do you forget, Your Grace, what happened with Mr. Caer??

Azjah spotted Wil making his way toward the Palazzo, his arrangements had apparently not taken him very long. She shook her head by way of answer to Eoin. Her voice a bare thread above a whisper, ?No, I have not forgotten.? Then she turned and left the Security Chief and headed for the Great Room, she wanted to spend every minute with Wil. The future had begun.

Azjah met Wil in the foyer, and she glanced up, a sphere of mistletoe now hung above the center of each doorway and arch inside the Palazzo, each adorned with gold metallic lace and burgundy velvet ribbons. The white berries were in abundance, and she waited with a grin for Wil to step through the doorway. When he did, she stepped into his arms, ?May I introduce you to another Yule tradition?? She reached up and pulled one white berry off the mistletoe before snaking both arms around Wil?s neck, drawing him down to her for a lingering kiss. ?Each kiss stolen beneath the mistletoe must be accompanied by plucking one berry from the greenery. When the berries are gone, so too are the kisses.?

She flashed him a smile, ?Were you able to accomplish everything so quickly?? She peered outside behind him, but saw nothing that had accompanied him from his own home. She knew he kept very few possessions, but knew that he did have some material things.

He told her that his staff was seeing to the delivery of two trunks of belongings, and she nodded, ?I?ll let Dyson know to expect them.? She linked her fingers with his, ?While you were out, they delivered the Yule logs for the fireplaces. Would you like to help set them up?? The Yule logs were already tied and bundled, but the candles had not been set into them, and they needed to be placed inside the fireplaces in preparation. They also needed to have some fir boughs and decorated pine cones laid on them to stage the actual lighting of the logs.

Later in the day, a delivery arrived from the Chocolatier, and Dyson sought them out, ?Your Grace? Master Stradinger has sent samples for your consideration.?

Azjah shot Wil a grin, ?These are another Rigelian tradition: that is, if Master Stradinger has the recipe just right.? She picked up a gold foiled sample and unwrapped it. She studied the mold form he had used before offering the chambord filled bite to Wil. ?You try this one, I?ll try the silver one.? She then unwrapped the silver foil that hid a Grand Marnier center and bit into it. A slow smile curved her lips then, ?Dyson? Tell Master Stradinger that these are just perfect. Please finish the order.? If there were an image in the dictionary of happiness, right now it would be Azjah with Wil beside her and the Rigelian chocolate that melted at precisely body temperature to reveal the liquid interior of the Alban Arthan treat.

She gingerly licked the melted chocolate from her fingertips with a radiant smile, ?These will be hidden all over the Palazzo. Who ever finds one is obligated to close their eyes, make a wish, and consume it on the spot. It?s meant to bring in the new year with sweetness and hope.? She leaned against Wil then, ?So no cheating, if you find one, you are required to make those wishes!?

Wil entered the home which was now to be his home, and walked right into the arms of his beloved, and yet another Yule tradition. After the kiss he continued to hold his arms around her waist, keeping her close against him. ?I suggest we find mistletoe which has been an over achiever in berry production,? he said with a chuckle. ?I?m liking these traditions more and more.?

He told her that his belongings would soon be arriving and that it wouldn?t be much. He had never been big on having ?things? and he preferred to leave the past with the house and to start over. Besides, the Palazzo was already well and perfectly furnished, and it certainly didn?t need any contribution from someone who thought the left seat of a fighter craft was all the furniture one ever really required. He helped with the Yule logs and listened to the Rigelian chocolate tradition. He was learning so many traditions he wondered if he could keep them all straight.

?Let?s see, I kiss with the mistletoe and wish with the chocolates. Or is it the other way around? Chocolate kisses and mistletoe wishes?? He remembered a line from an old movie with the mnemonic ?The flagon with the dragon has the pellet with the poison, but the chalice from the palace as the brew which is true.?*

Azjah leaned against Wil then said, ?So no cheating, if you find one, you are required to make those wishes!?

?Okay, I promise, no cheating. Besides, I already know what I?m wishing for.? He touched her cheek with his fingertips and placed a loving and lingering kiss upon her lips.

Azjah laughed merrily at his twisting and confusing the two traditions, ?How about you kiss me for both the mistletoe and the chocolate, and then you have it covered?? She was of course teasing him, but as he held her there in the foyer in his arms, it was a notion that appealed very much. His feather light touch on her cheek brought a warm smile to her lips just as his descended for a melting kiss.

She wrapped both arms around his waist, ?We have had several agree to come for food and drink for Yule, and Dyson is taking care of the open house notices. I sent some of the Rigelian chocolates over to Koy and Matthew, and I took the liberty of signing the card from us both.? She peered up at him, hoping she had not overstepped.

?There is going to be enough food around here for the next week, and unless you wish to test Andre?s skills with a very sharp knife, you might want to eat it.? She gave him an impish smile, ?But I think we can see to it that you get enough of a work out to keep from gaining any weight.?

She reached for his hand then, ?Come, let me show you the transformation in the gardens.? She led Wil through the foyer and Great room out into the enclosed square of the Palazzo?s formal gardens. The snow had been removed from the flag-stoned courtyard, and the central fountain had been lit from beneath the water. Golden lights shimmered in the base of the fountain, and the heated water gave off a steady rise of steam into the late morning air. The Noble fir and holly roping was elegantly swagged around the entire perimeter of the garden, punctuated by burgundy velvet and gold metallic lace ribbons. The lights were the same amber color that was inside the fountain glittered amidst the evergreen boughs, and a light dusting of snow already gave the roping the look of having been dusted with faerie dust.

Beneath the overhang of the house and the courtyard there had been twelve wreathes hung, three per wall, with a large 72? in the center, and each of those flanked by matching 54? wreathes. They were woven of Noble fir, holly and juniper. They were lit as well, and had matching ribbons, but they were also decorated in gold ornaments and burgundy pearls. The giant white snowflakes they had found in the storage area now hung from the ceiling in clusters of six to eight all around the covered walkway.

Azjah leaned against Wil, ?Did you know that the wreaths originated in pagan times for the Winter Solstice? They represented the rebirth for nature, and when the bonfires of the Solstice were lit, the wreaths represented the signs of the approaching light?? She studied Wil a moment, ?And then other belief systems adapted the wreaths, converting them into symbols of spiritual values. The circular shape representing eternal rebirth, and the evergreen also signifies eternal life. But when a cedar is used, it suggests strength and healing, while holly and pine and yew stand for immortality.?

The Solstice circle had been opened the night before, and the candles still remained at the cardinal directions. They would remain there through out the Yule celebrations until Twelfth Night.

Azjah knew what she would give to Wil for Yule. It had taken her the entire two weeks of preparation to figure it out, but at last she knew, and she knew where she would make the gifting too.

The evening of the 24th, Azjah sat with Wil in the great room of the Palazzo. They had a glass of Nutty Irish that they had been sharing when Dyson stepped into the room, ?Arturo has brought the horses, Your Grace.?

Azjah flashed Wil a smile, ?It is time to go my dear, unless you cannot be convinced to join me for a moonlight ride tonight??

He gave her ?that look? of his, and it clearly said he really did not want to go out into the cold, but if she was going, so was he.

Azjah shot him a grin as Dyson brought a fur lined cloak for her as she pulled on a pair of riding boots. She slipped into the long cloak and pulled on a pair of deerskin gloves that were lined with the same chinchilla fur that the cloak was lined with. Dyson then offered a matching fur cloak to Wil. It was cold out, much too cold for his usual leather flight jacket.

When they stepped outside, their breath instantly sent up puffs of steam as Arturo brought two horses forward. Azjah?s chestnut was saddled with a silver tooled side saddle, and a ring of holly graced his neck. The bridle was also silver tooled, and Azjah allowed Arturo to give her a leg up as she settled onto the side saddle. The cloak wrapped securely around her to help keep her warm for the ride.

Arturo then handed the reins over to Wil of a 16 hand Andalusian. The stallion was a lovely dapple gray with a mane that had been braided with holly and ribbons. The saddle was black leather hunting saddle, and the double bridle included a drop noseband with curb and snaffle.

Eoin stood in a shadowed doorway. It was night, and the Dragonseeker would accompany them, but he didn?t like them going off alone.

Azjah led Wil across the vineyard slopes and snow glistened in the moonlight. She headed toward the far end of the Palazzo?s property and into a copse of trees, where a warm glow began to peek through the trees. They stepped out of the trees and into a small clearing where the pond had been frozen over completely, and had been cleared of snow. A table and two chairs sat near the edge of the ice.

Lanterns circled the small pond, giving the place a warm glow. Evergreen and holly boughs had been placed near the lanterns and on the small table. It was here that Azjah dismounted and put the hobbles on the chestnut Arabian she had ridden before she pulled the bridle off and hooked it over a low branch.

She turned toward Wil with a smile, ?For Yule, I wanted to dance with you beneath the stars, and I could not think of a lovelier place to invite you to dance with me.? As he moved toward her, she reached into the cloak and pulled a small silk drawstring pouch and offered it to him. ?This will be yours, and tonight, I give it to your keeping.? Inside was the Marquess seal, the symbol of the Peerage. It had belonged to Tornach, and now it belonged to Wil Savage.

She melted against him for the first dance in the moonlight.

Wil had been waiting for this night and for just the right moment to hand Azjah the box that was in his pocket. He had just finished his drink and felt that the moment had come, when Dyson stepped into the room and announced, ?Arturo has brought the horses, Your Grace.? Azjah was always full of surprises ? which he loved about her ? but it did make it a bit difficult to follow through with his own plans. Flexibility! That was the key when one was in the presence of the Lady Caer.

He hesitantly agreed to the ride but once he was in the saddle of the 16 hand Andalusian, he was actually starting to enjoy the idea. A ride at night in the clear, cold air, and feeling the warmth generated by the steed beneath him, was an invigorating experience.

Wil dismounted at the pond, and secured his horse before he walked to Azjah, placing his arm around her. ?A dance under the moon and stars, on a frozen pond, and with the snow reflecting the night?s light, what could be better?? he expressed softly as his eyes took in the beauty of the place. He then watched her pull out a pouch and hand him the Marquess seal. ?Thank you,? he whispered. ?I?m truly honored, and I'll keep it safe.?

He paused a bit and reached into his pocket. ?Now, it?s my turn.? He removed a small box that was covered in the deepest blue velvet. As he opened it, the engagement ring immediately shone brightly in the ambient light. It was a three-stone setting in a gold band. They were round-cut diamonds with the center being the larger and of highest clarity. The diamond on each side was each slightly different in hue, one having the palest blue color and the other a little deeper blue. Wil took it out with his right hand and reached for her left hand with his left. ?I've been wanting to do this since that night in the folly on Rigel. The three diamonds actually come from three different worlds. The center represents our love and life together. The two others represent the twin stars of Rigel which have watched over you throughout your life, and have been witness to the growth of our love.?

He placed it on her finger, and they melted together in that first dance in the moonlight.

Azjah

Azjah?s eyes sparkled in the flickering lantern light. She knew Wil was the perfect man to be the Marquess, and to take her father?s role and his responsibilities. And then he pulled the deep blue velvet box from his pocket. Her heart stopped beating as he took her left hand in his, ?I?ve been wanting to do this since that night in the folly on Rigel.? The three diamonds glittered in the light, and the blue shades beside the central diamond augmented the clarity of the one that he said represented their love and their life together. It was the most gorgeous ring she had ever seen.

When Wil told her that the two blue diamonds represented the twin suns of Rigel, tears shimmered in her eyes. Wil knew precisely how to touch her, body and soul, and he?d proven it again tonight.

Then he slid the ring onto her hand and enfolded her into his arms before Azjah?s heart remembered to beat. She curled her left arm around Wil?s neck, going onto her toes to give him a kiss that was meant to share with him how she felt, and how honored she was that he would claim her despite everything they had been through. Azjah wanted him to know how much she loved him.

Time had no meaning as they danced on the ice of the pond. The moon slowly traversed the sky above them and despite the chill air; Azjah was never cold as she basked in the warmth of being with Wil. The ice looked almost black beneath their feet, which was a counterpoint to the glistening snow all around the edge of the pond.

The horses pawed through the deep snow in search of grasses. The small bells that had been braided into their manes jingled periodically.

Azjah hated to end the night. The world felt so much more manageable and secure right here in the darkness with Wil?s arms around her. But at length, she let Wil lead her back to the horses, and once they were re-bridled, he gave her a leg up onto the chestnut she?d ridden down. They retraced their ride toward the lights of the Palazzo, and as they left the woods, the lanterns were extinguished and vanished.

Dominik smiled to himself as he watched them go. The Colonel was turning out to be good for the Marchioness. They were one-step closer to a wedding that would solidify the Triberg holdings, and the Marches.

Yule had come and gone. They had spent the days between Yule and the eve of the New Year enjoying one another?s company. The thought of returning to work was not as exhilarating as it had been in previous years. Even the promising work on the miniaturization of the TC was not as much of a lure as Wil was.

She sat in front of the computer terminal and pulled up the files on the TC. It was a devastating weapon, usually found in fighters used by humanoid forms. The canon essentially slows down tachyon particles, and once decelerated and forced into a stream, their damage potential was increased monumentally. Naturally occurring tachyons travel at faster than light speeds and were first described by German physicist Arnold Sommerfeld. Harnessing these high energy particles took decades to accomplish. Tachyon?s were initially said to be constrained by the space-like portion of the energy momentum graphs created by physicists who studied the theories, and as such, believed that they could not slow down to subluminal speeds. But when the tachyon condensation process was discovered, it was also discovered how to reach a minimum potential energy states. That discovery led to the first tachyon canons.

Tachyons are a lethal problem because they all involve spontaneous symmetry breaking. When this energy is focused by a tachyon canon, even the heavy shields of capital ships can be successfully damaged or broken with a well aimed strike. But, the downside of tachyon canons is their size. It takes a large fighter to house a tachyon canon. Now they were close to being able to downsize the requirements without sacrificing the power. The physics behind the downsizing were staggering. Overcoming those physics was even more awe inspiring.

They had made use of something called string theory. The D-branes are a class of extended objects where open strings can end with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The black p-brane solutions of super gravity had led to several interesting discoveries, including the Second Superstring Revolution and the Holographic and M-theory dualities. The discovery of instantonic or D(-1)-branes gave rise to localization in both space and time. This discovery allowed the generation chamber to be miniaturized. Localizing space and time in a predictable manner was the key to reducing size.

Dirichlet boundary conditions require that the endpoints of the string be pinned. This pinning also enabled downsizing rather than trying to manage the Neumann boundaries, where the string endpoints are not fixed, but are free to move through space-time at the speed of light. It is nearly impossible to give direction to a tachyon if the strings are not tied down.

The special quantum strings that result are called tachyons. They have some very odd properties, like imaginary mass. But when that ?imaginary mass? is directed, the strings lead to a tachyon field ?living? on the brane?s volume. The lower branes volumes result in large collections of tachyons. This large collection in a small, predictable space is what gives the tachyon canon its devastating power source.

Azjah leaned back as she reviewed the current status. They were close to being ready to show the prototypes, but before that, she had one last surprise for Wil.

Azjah

Date: 2009-01-01 20:22 EST
Azjah looked up just as she was about to call for Dyson. Standing about 3 meters from her desk was Dominik. ?What can I do for you Dominik?? She was used to having Gabriel or Lucien show up without warning, but Dominik?s appearance still took her by surprise.

?I am going to rationalize that with tonight being the advent of a new year here in RhyDin, you will desire something special for yourself and the Colonel?? He maintained that same deathly stillness of her Carpathian bodyguards. But unlike the deep onyx eyes of Gabriel or Lucien, Dominik?s always seemed to have a faint glow to their unusual shade of green. And she had never seen the red fires that lit the Carpathian?s when danger loomed.

Giving herself a mental shake, Azjah smiled, ?Yes, in fact I was just about to ask Dyson for some help to lay out my plan for tonight.? If she had a blood tie to the Dragonseeker, she would have understood how he knew when to come and go, but that was something she had not done. Wil had been most uncomfortable with the notion of letting Dominik feed on her blood on previous flights. A true exchange seemed unwise given his views on blood drinkers, even when they were not vampyre. So how he managed to always show up when he was needed remained a mystery to her.

?Were you planning something out of the house, or something private?? Dominik could read her mind and make it faster, but he felt it was inappropriate under the circumstances.

Azjah rose, ?I believe we will be staying in tonight Dominik, so if you would like to spend the night away from the Palazzo, you need have no worries about my leaving Eoin?s watchful surveillance.? She smiled, hoping the Dragonseeker might spend some of his time in RhyDin on pleasurable pursuits of his own.

Dominik gave her a brief bow, ?Should you change your mind, I will be within the walls of this house.? Then he simply faded from the room. Lucien and Gabriel usually walked out of the room before disapparating.

Azjah chuckled and went in search of Dyson, whom she found in the pantry in a heated discussion with the chef. At her pause in the door, both men fell silent and Andr??s cheeks flushed. ?Good afternoon gentlemen, just the two people I most wanted to see at the moment.? She glanced between the two and decided to bring them together at a work table where they would have to stand side by side to discuss her plans.

?Andr??? Azjah?s pale blue eyes landed first on the chef, ?I want one tray for two ready and delivered to the orangery at quarter before midnight. Be certain it includes hot and cold finger foods. The champagne must be the Mo?t & Chandon Nectar Imp?rial.? She let silence hang for a moment, ?Do you have any questions about the request??

Andr? frowned a moment, ?You want a French tray of hors d?oeuvres chauds for two. Do you desire a theme, seafood, or other??

Azjah smiled, ?Andr?, you know what I like, so please indulge yourself to fill the creativity. We are still learning what W.. The Colonel, likes and does not like.? She had to stop calling him Wil in front of staff, it was inappropriate, but then, so too was his moving in to the Palazzo just before Yule. Well, inappropriate to the social mores she had been raised with, but so very appropriate for the two of them.

Then she looked at Dyson, who was still shooting daggers at the chef. ?Dyson, we will be celebrating privately in the Orangery tonight. Please have the Jacuzzi prepared, and flowers. I think I would like to have a theme in shades of blue tonight. Oh, and we are not at home in the event of guests.? She gave Dyson a smile. Now she had to find a way to get Wil into the Orangery.

She headed for her suite, which was now shared with Wil, and hoped he was not yet returned. The suite was silent as she entered, and threw open the doors to her closet. ?What to wear??? She was muttering to herself when a light knock sounded at her door. She turned to see Dominik standing there. ?Your Grace worries what the Colonel would like to see her in?? He gave a smile that showed twin fangs in the light. ?Your Colonel will not see the dress Your Grace. Wear the one to your left.?

Azjah pulled the next hangar from the closet, then gave Dominik a smile. ?He won?t notice the dress because there isn?t much to it.? But she had to admit, for New Year, it was ideal.

When Wil arrived, Azjah was waiting in the Great Room. Her hair was up in a flawless chignon, the platinum picks holding shoulder length hair up. Around her throat was a simple platinum torc with sapphires in the mouths of twin dragons, and a smaller version wrapped around her left wrist. On her finger was the three stone ring he had given her on Yule. In her right hand was a blue taper which she lit as he walked through the door. She offered Wil her left hand with an impish smile, ?Are you ready to welcome in a New Year??

They walked down the main hall to the right and as they turned left at the end, the house opened into the Orangery. She paused as Wil got his first look at the Palazzo?s greenhouse. The path was lined with tree ferns flowering plants. A small fountain played cheerfully just inside the door. Blue candles lit the path as they moved forward until they reached a widened path that revealed a sunken hot tub. Around the edges sat arrangements of protea and iris. Plush blue towels were rolled and neatly placed within reach from the water.

Azjah smiled up at Wil, ?New Year with just us??
