To Luc's surprise, the next few days after their battle with Don Felipe and his ghoul passed without any significant event.? He'd been more than half expecting to receive either a summons from Ecaterina, or an unpleasant visit from her enforcers.? Finally, almost a week after Saturday's party and the subsequent fight, a perfectly cordial invitation to visit Ecaterina's estate arrived.

Dannika was quite nervous about the invitation.? She was certain that Ecaterina had found out about the fight with Don Felipe and was calling her and Luc to answer for it.? Nevertheless, as a guest in the Bishop's domain - albeit with a short stay granted - she dashed off a pleasant enough reply and spent the next three days biting her nails and snapping peevishly at Luc's innocent questions. Luc spent most of his time in the workshop during those three days, trying to stay out of Dannika's way as much as he could.? He didn't like it when she was upset like this, but quickly realized that discretion was the better part of valor in this case.

Finally the night of their visit arrived and after dressing appropriately for a visit to the Bishop - no trousers and boots for Danni, and an ink-stain-free waistcoat for Luc - they bundled into a brand-new coach and made their ponderous way towards the Ecaterina's estate.? New York City was now firmly in the grip of Winter, which made the roads nearly impassable due to the knee-high snow drifts and iced-over mud puddles.

The Bishop's estate looked very different that night and some of Danni's nervousness bled away when she saw that no one other than the Bishop, Beatrice, Luc and herself would be present during the meeting.? Ecaterina greeted them at the door with a pleasant smile and Dannika detected no duplicity in the Kindred, a feeling confirmed when Beatrice greeted her and Luc with warm hugs and kisses to their cheeks.? And then she remembered that Christ had been betrayed by a kiss and she instantly felt nervous again.

As it turned out, though, the meeting went quite pleasantly.? Ecaterina casually mentioned that Don Felipe had left for Spain rather abruptly, an opening which allowed Dannika to tell their side of the story.? Ecaterina did not seem very surprised to hear that Don Felipe had attacked them, and made no chastising comments about their killing of his ghoul.? Her attitude suggested that the Spaniard got what he deserved.? She did, however, mention that Don Felipe's connections in Spain were quite strong; a clear warning.

After the meeting with Ecaterina, Beatrice accompanied Dannika and Luc back to their home in order to begin Luc's Thaumaturgy lessons.? She was impressed by his aptitude, and he by her obvious intelligence.? He had a feeling he was going to enjoy these lessons quite a bit. Luc and Bea spent the next six months in Luc's lab, learning magic that when explained to her, made Dannika's eyes throb, and Danni spent her time wandering the town, visiting taverns, listening to conversations and gossip between the mortals and the Kindred.? She was slowly becoming a political animal, not out of a desire to, but out of the necessity of keeping Luc alive and safe.? She wanted to make sure she would always side with the strongest in any conflict and put the most powerful players at her back.

It was a little strange at first for Luc, to be spending so many nights with someone other than Dannika, but he quickly grew to not only respect Beatrice, but to genuinely like her.? Furthermore, he was sure that Dannika felt the same way, and it seemed as though the feelings were reciprocated by Beatrice.

Soon, Winter let up its choke hold on the city and Spring swept in, bringing delicious scents to the night breezes and quickening sluggish blood.? Dannika's promise to Ecaterina that they would leave in April was a constant badgering voice in the back of her mind.? Where would they go?? Europe?? Was it safe there for them?? South to New Orleans or maybe Mexico?

That question was answered for them, however, when it became clear that, despite his talent for it, learning enough Thaumaturgy to be of any use was going to take Luc longer than they expected.? He grew worried, spending longer and longer hours studying and practicing, but knew that their time in New York would run out before he could become competent.? Early in March, sensing Luc's concerns, and perhaps wanting to spend more time with the pair, Beatrice informed them that she was soon going to be returning to Montreal,? and invited them to come stay with her for as long as it took to finish his lessons.? Luc was thrilled with the idea.

Dannika gratefully accepted Bea's invitation, relaxing more than a little now that at least the next year or so of their future was planned for.? She was quite proud of Luc's aptitude with magic - even if she didn't quite understand it.? But she was restless and felt more and more like a third wheel.? She needed something of her own, some skill to perfect.? Breaking into people's homes and picking their pockets was great fun, but it was no longer quite the challenge it had been when she was mortal.

The journey to Montreal, in April of 1776, went quickly and uneventfully.? Dannika and Luc quickly settled into Beatrice's home and the Thaumaturgy lessons continued.? The trio fell into a habit of spending the early evenings together talking, going around town, and just generally enjoying themselves.? Then they would come home and Beatrice would teach Luc.

A month after settling into Bea's house, Beatrice approached Dannika one night and indicated that she wished to speak with the Ravnos alone.? Concerned that Luc had somehow offended their hostess during one of their lessons, Dannika mentally prepared an apology as she allowed the Kiasyd to lead her into Bea's private chambers.? As it turned out, an apology was not needed in the slightest.? Beatrice confessed an attraction to both Luc and Dannika and was testing the waters, so to speak.? Dannika was shocked...and excited that such a beautiful creature wanted to take them both as lovers and agreed at once.? They brought the idea at once to Luc.

If Dannika had been shocked to learn of Beatrice's feelings, Luc was completely dumbfounded.? He was already more than a little in awe of Beatrice's beauty, not to mention her keen intelligence and skill.? The idea of having both Dannika and Beatrice as a lovers was one that he could not possibly refuse, though, especially the two seemed to have already made up their minds about it.? What fool would turn that down?

The trio fell into a comfortable rhythm during the summer ? waking at dusk, talking for a few hours before Dannika and Luc went to hunt, Luc and Bea spending time together in her workshop or her extensive library while Dannika roamed the city as she had done in New York. She did not stay away from Beatrice's home for long though; instead she found herself returning long before dawn and falling into Beatrice's enormous bed with the beautiful scholar and her childe to spend the hours before succumbing to the Sun in the arms of both. Unlife during the long Montreal summer was very, very good indeed.

Dannika loved Montreal.? It had a freshness to it that many of the cities she'd wandered through while in Europe and even in America lacked.? Construction was going on everywhere she looked, even in spite of the American attempts at occupation.? The city was flooded with a glut of Loyalists fleeing the Revolution to the south and east and all those new inhabitants needed shops and homes and churches. She had wandered the night-darkened streets every night since she and Luc had accompanied Beatrice here four months ago.? She was still surprised at all the Francophones and her French vocabulary was getting quite the work-out.

Tonight, she'd decided to explore the few quais and docks on the river, including the failed attempts at building a canal that would by-pass the infamous Lachine Rapids.? The docks, she quickly discovered, were much like docks in every city she'd been in - dangerous and peopled with unsavory characters.? She felt quite at home.

A small wooden cottage squatted at the edge of the river, about five hundred yards from her.? Though it appeared completely unremarkable, there was something fascinating about the little house.? An aura, evoking a curiosity that was almost irresistibly strong.? It beckoned to her, this little house, drawing her towards it without conscious volition.

She turned to face the squat little house, and despite a feeling that something other than simple curiosity was at work here, moved closer, all the while visually scanning the area and pouring vitae into her muscles and reflexes and giving herself the inhuman speed that had saved her during the fight with the Spanish fop in New York. The area around the little house was silent, and devoid of any scurrying creatures.? The front door stood very slightly ajar - just a line of darkness showing at one edge.?

Drawing both rondel daggers and loosely clenching their leather-wrapped hilts, she elbowed the door open and stepped inside, senses on high, body vibrating with the promise of impending violence. Ahead of her, across the small room, stood three cloaked figures.? Two were large and bulky, while the one in the middle was normally proportioned, even a little short.? The door swung closed behind her abruptly.?

She moved to put her back against the wall and crouched down in a defensive posture.? She scanned the figures' auras, trying to get a bead on who or what they were, and what they wanted. The two large figures had a bright purple nimbus around them - human muscle, maybe ghouls.? The smaller figure's aura was a pale rose - definitely that of an excited, anticipatory vampire - and she sensed, but did not see, a fourth presence next to her.? Whirling to face this direction, she thrust out towards the presence, slashing her dagger twice, down and to her right.

Her blade sunk into the stomach of a third large and bulky cloaked figure, drawing a gasp and moan of pain.? The figure slumped against the wall, clapping a hand to its torn gut and looking down at the loop of intestine protruding wetly from its flesh.? The other two large figures rushed forwards, while the smaller figures raised hands that lengthen into viciously pointed claws.

She locked eyes with the vampire, raising her dripping blades and snarled ferociously at him, every movement showing him that she could do to him what she'd just done to the ghoul beside her. For a moment, their wills clashed, but the vampire couldn't stand under her gaze.? He broke, all at once, and turned tail, running for the back door.? The two rushing ghouls faltered momentarily when their master fled, losing the momentum of their charge.

She grinned at the ghouls and moved to position herself so the three humans were all in front of her now. The back door slammed open as the vampire ran through it in a blur of motion.? The two uninjured ghouls exchanged glances, then, as one, came to a halt and held up their hands in placation.?? They were cowed by what they'd seen and wanted no more part of it.

She shook her head at the awesome show of cowardice and then took another step backwards, letting the moonlight that filtered through the grubby windows shine across her bare shoulders, turning her skin luminescent, and pick silvery highlights out of her hair.? She rearranged her limbs subtly, inclined her head a bit and played up every ounce of her inhuman beauty.? "Who are you?" she asked the unwounded humans.

Their jaws dropped in unison, hanging slackly as the impact of her appearance - and will - hit them.? One of them stammered out his name, followed quickly by the other.? The third man, the wounded one, merely groaned and slid to the floor.

"And why are you here?" she asked, her voice soft and husky as she pitted her indomitable ability to seduce and entrance against their malleable wills.

"Our master was sent to hunt you and your childe down."? Both men stood stock still now, staring unblinkingly at her.

"Your Master?? The coward you fled and left you here to fend for yourselves?"? She snorted derisively.? "Who sent him?"

"The Camarilla."

"And how did those toadies of the Ventrue find out about us?"

They looked at each other, then back to her, and shrugged.? "He didn't say."

She sighed softly and then made shooing motions with her hands, which were still wrapped around the hilts of her daggers.? "Go away and never come back to this city.? Do you understand me?"

They nodded emphatically, then turned and ran for the door their master had fled out of.? The third man struggled to his feet and began staggering after them, still holding in his guts with his hand.

"You, my dear," she said to the wounded one as she stepped closer to him and reached out to press her hand against his forearm, "are going to be allowed the singular honor of assisting me in recovering my lost vitae." Even entranced by her will as he was, the ghoul's fear was obvious as he realized what she meant.? There was nowhere for him to go, though.

She wrapped him in her Embrace, sunk her fangs into his neck, and drained away what was left of his life's blood.? When he was dead, she licked the wound closed and dropped him unceremoniously to the dirty floor of the hovel and successfully hiding her attack.? When the body was eventually found, the death no doubt would be chalked up to a gambling debt or a mugging. Then she sped home, worrying about Luc and Beatrice the entire way.

Dannika burst through the doors of Beatrice's home, shouting her childe's name as she ran through the rooms, frantically looking for him. Luc and Beatrice were in the library when Dannika came through the doors.? They both leapt to their feet, and Luc ran towards her immediately.? "What's wrong?"? He saw the frantic, worried look on her face, the blood on her arms.

She caught him up in her arms and held him tightly, relief flooding her at the sight of him whole and unharmed.? "Are you both all right?" she asked as she took a step back and reached up to cup his face, her stormy eyes searching his.? "Has anyone been here tonight?"

"Yes, we're fine," he answered, hugging her hard, then looking down into her eyes.? "Nothing's happened, no one's been here.? It's been a quiet night."? He took her hands in his, and looked at them.? "For us, at least," he added. She drew him over to sit next to Beatrice and told them of her recent adventures, making sure to particularly underscore the fact that the Camarilla had sent her attackers.?

"The Camarilla?? Why now?"? Luc looked confused.? Beatrice had told him that the Camarilla had almost no presence in Montreal, that even their supposed Prince was secretly Sabbat.

Beatrice's delicate brow furrowed in a frown during Danni's retelling.? "It is most likely because you are Ravnos," she said in answer to Luc's question.? Her annoyance at the permission granted by the city's Prince to conduct a Blood Hunt showed in her flashing eyes and the tight lines of her lush lips.? "You are unharmed, cherie?" she asked Dannika.

Dannika nodded and muttered some very unflattering invectives in Romanian under her breath, calling into question the ancestry of Strathcona, the Prince.? "They will try again, Luc.? We...I...should leave.? You're both in danger if I stay."

He grabbed her hand immediately and held it tightly.? "No.? You can't leave me."?

She raised his hand to her lips and kissed the back of it gently.? "Luc, mon amour, I will not endanger you.? You need to stay here with Bea and continue your studies.? After I've rid myself of the insufferable b?tards, I will come back."

He shook his head.? "My love, there is only one reason they would come now."

Her brow arched and she stared hard at him.? "Oh?? And what is that, pray tell?"

He spoke just two words.? "Don Felipe."

Her eyes narrowed dangerously and she growled.? "Oh, that hijo de puta!? I'll rip his face off and dance on his bones!"

He nodded in agreement.? "There's nothing I'd like more.? But you see my point, oui?"

Her rage subsided a bit and she nodded.? "So...we must cut the head off the serpent then?? But...how?? The snake is in Spain, yes?" she asked, seeking Bea's opinion.

Bea nodded.? "Yes, that is where Ecaterina assumed he was going when he fled New York.? But Dannika, you are forgetting something.? Felipe knows about Luc.? It would not matter if you left; he would still be in danger."

"Yes, exactly my point.? Splitting up would only make us more vulnerable, chere.? We must work together to face the threat."

She looked chagrined and contrite.? "Oui, d'accord."

He smiled, then, relieved, and leaned forward to hug her again.? "So.? Whoever this Cainite who hunts us is, we know that he cannot match Dannika's will.? He knows this, too.? This means he will gather a larger force next time.? We know he won't give up, his pride has been wounded."

"He is down three ghouls now, at least," Beatrice said with a forced smile.

"Will he be able to call back the two you ran off?"

Danni chuckled maliciously.? "Not for at least a year or more."

He grinned, patting her hand appreciatively.? "You are amazing, love.? So.? We have two options.? Wait for him to come back, or go after him instead."? He looked over at Bea.? "Will this 'Prince' of the City shelter him, do you think?"

Beatrice shrugged elegantly.? "I sincerely doubt it.? This assassin failed in his first attempt.? That's enough to earn him Strathcona's ire.? He will have to shelter outside the city and find his lackeys elsewhere, I believe."

"Good.? That means he'll be vulnerable while he tries to gather forces, and it'll take him longer."? He gave a feral grin.

Dannika smiled proudly at her childe's uncharacteristic show of aggression.? "If we can find him before he's ready, we can nip this in the bud immediately," she said, looking back and forth between Luc and Bea.

It was mid-September, and the weather had turned cold.? The three Cainites were sitting in Beatrice's parlour, talking and laughing.? Luc exchanged a conspiratorial glance with Beatrice, then suddenly asked Danni, "Do you know what day this is, mon amour?"

Dannika cocked her head to one side and looked back and forth between Luc and Bea.? Her grey eyes narrowed subtly as she caught onto the fact that they were up to something.? "Non," she answered.? "I do not.? But I have the feeling that it is an important one, oui?"

A wide, slightly self-satisfied grin spread across his lips as he nodded.? "Oh, indeed.? Something very important happened on this day, one hundred and eighty-two years ago."

She stared at him in utter incomprehension, trying to remember if anything important had happened.? 182 years ago was 1594...? 1594...? Why was that familiar?? She gasped suddenly and her eyes grew wide as realization sunk in.? "It's my birthday?" she asked.

He couldn't hold back the laugh that escaped as the startled realization came over her, even as he leaned forward to take her hands in his.? "Oui, it is your birthday today, and we must celebrate."

She frowned a little.? "Celebrate?? The day of my mortal birth?"? Chewing her lower lip a bit as she thought, she finally shrugged and gave Luc a tentative smile.? "How?? What have you planned?"

"I have a special treat for you, mon couer; one that I think you will greatly enjoy."

"What sort of treat?" she asked with a touch of uncertainty.? She really wasn't a fan of surprises, and although she trusted Luc - and Bea, for that matter - with her life, she was still filled with a bit of trepidation.

He glanced at Beatrice, wondering if he should keep Danni in suspense, or tell her the surprise he had in mind for tonight.? The beautiful Kiasyd knew what his plan was, of course--she had been witness to the breakthrough which would enable it.

Danni looked back and forth between them and then groaned.? "Oh, come out with it all ready!? The suspense is killing me!"

Bea's Cupid's Bow mouth curved in a wicked grin and she chuckled softly.? "You should leave her on the hook, Luc.? Look how prettily she squirms."

"It is lovely," he agreed, grinning hugely at Danni's impatience.? He waited a little longer, just long enough that she would be ready to explode before he relented.? "I have discovered a way to give you an experience you have not had in over 150 years ? the taste of food.? Human food."

She stared at him in open-mouthed wonder and then glanced aside at Bea.? "Is what he says true?"?

The Kiasyd nodded, the wicked grin softening into a gentle smile.? "It is true, cherie.? It is possibly through Luc's studies."

He nodded in agreement.? "It is a ritual of Thaumaturgy.? It will allow you to experience a single aspect of human life for one night.? I thought that eating food would be the most appealing to you, though it could also be breath in your lungs, or a return of the warmth to your skin, for example."

She launched herself off her chair and hurtled into Luc's arms, hugging him fiercely and covering his face in scores of tiny kisses.? Then she turned and did the same for Bea, before crouching down between them and taking both of their hands.? "Thank you, a hundred thousand times, thank you," she said with a huge, happy grin.

His own smile was hardly smaller than hers, a feeling of warmth that had nothing at all to do with the crackling fire blazing in the fireplace spreading through him.? "Your happiness is all the thanks I need, ma chere."? He lifted her hand to his mouth, planting several kisses on her knuckles.

Bea returned Danni's kisses and then rose, gently disentangling her hand from the Ravnos's.? "I will leave you two to get ready and have your night.? Do enjoy yourselves and come tell me all about it when you are finished."? She reached out and gently smoothed back the floppy locks of hair that poured over Luc's brow like a wheaten waterfall and then kissed the crown of Danni's head before turning and going up the stairs to her chamber.

Watching Beatrice turn and make her exit, he smiled softly after her.? It was good of her to let them have this night for just the two of them.? Though he was extremely fond of the Kiasyd scholar ? loved her, even, in some part ? it wasn't as special a bond as that which he and Dannika shared.? He turned back to her and stood, drawing her to her feet.? "You must dress for your meal, chere.? The cook will be here shortly to begin his preparations."

She stood up and glanced down at the man's shirt and trousers she felt most comfortable in and then back up at her childe's face.? "This is not good enough?" she asked with a bit of a devilish smirk.? "You would have me put on a dress and some hoops?? Perhaps I could borrow some of Bea's pearls and shoes, too?"? She was teasing him, of course.? She would gladly dress up for him.

He chuckled, reaching out to run his finger gently down her cheek.? "For myself, you could wear sack-cloth and ashes and be as beautiful as the stars above.? But yes, you should dress up for this special meal, I think.? If for not other reason than to avoid scandalizing the cook.? He might burn your meal if he's too shocked."? There was a bit of a smirk on his own lips as he finished.

She laughed at that and stood on tip-toe to press a kiss against his cheek.? "All right.? If only to save the poor cook's delicate sensibilities.? When are we dining?"

He turned his head, boldly catching her lips with his own before glancing at the timepiece on the mantle above the hearth.? "In two hours.? Plenty of time."

"That should be enough time for me to squeeze into my dress and properly adorn my hair.? I shall see you then.? In the dining room?"

"Oui, mon amour.? In the dining room.? I will perform my ritual just before the food arrives."

She grinned, feeling a tiny thread of excitement.? "I cannot wait."? She kissed him again and then turned and headed up the stairs to her chamber, to beg assistance from Beatrice.

He caught a hint of that excitement through the blood-bond, and grinned as she left.? He was thrilled to be able to give her something so special as tasting mortal food again.? He hurried out the room, for he needed to dress as well. He was dressed and ready long before her, of course.? Women's clothing was far more complicated and men's.? It was no wonder Danni preferred trousers and a man's shirt most of the time.? One could not be in a hurry with women's clothing.? He headed down to the dining room to await her.
