A month after discovering that Boston Harbor was blockaded and they would not find safe passage to Europe there, Dannika and Luc had settled in New York City.? Most of the ships in and out of the city were filled with soldiers, but there were a few merchant and passenger ships still moving through the port. But as it was November and terrible storms would soon be sweeping across the ocean, they decided to stay in the city until spring and then seek out a passenger ship to take them to Europe.
Masquerading as a wealthy French widow who had come to increase her late husband's fortunes, Dannika had procured a cozy little house on the western shore of the East River, not far from the tip of Manhattan Isle.? They had servants who didn't question their Mistress and her...man's habits and they had the entire city at their fingertips.? Dannika spent her time catching up on gossip, teaching Luc what she knew, and encouraging him to begin his research into the Elixir.
When he wasn't with Dannika, either learning about Kindred society or just relaxing and socializing, Luc spent most of his time at the private libraries of wealthy merchants, invitations to which were child's play for Dannika to procure.? He also visited several of the universities in the area, such as King's College, the College of New Jersey, and the Collegiate School.? Since neither of them had any real idea of what might make up Lameth's Elixir, he was forced to start almost from the beginning, figuring out what plants might lead the effects he was looking for.?
One of his first starting points was in the area of opiates, as he reasoned that depressants might help calm the Beast within. Using himself as a test subject, Luc did find that opiates affected Cainites in much the same way as they did humans, though for a much shorter time.? Still, it was a promising start.? Calming the Beast was a viable option. The problem, of course, was finding something that would produce a stronger effect that lasted far longer than what he'd been able to create so far.? Based on the memories stolen from Danni's sire, Lameth's Elixir needed only be taken a single time to forever quell the Beast.? Luc did not think any herb or even any refined herb could produce such an effect.? Clearly, there was a supernatural element involved.
When he reached this conclusion, he immediately sought Dannika.? He found her in the salon of their house, reading the newspaper.? He went over and dropped onto the lounge with her, resting his hand on her forearm.
She glanced up, a fond smile on her lips for him.? "You look troubled, mon amour," she said and folded up the paper, called the New York Weekly Journal.? She'd been reading about the skirmish that Luc had been involved in while still in Quebec.? "What's wrong?"
"I believe that I need to learn sorcery," he said slowly.? "Even with the short amount of research I have been able to do, it is clear to me that no normal plant or alchemical compound can produce a permanent affect such as the Elixir is supposed to do.? Our ancient sorcerer must have combined magic with his alchemy, at the very least."
"Sorcery," she repeated and gave him a blank look.? "You mean...that's real?? Magic and all of that, I mean."
His face indicated a similar lack of knowledge.? "I can only believe it is so.? Otherwise, our search is ended after barely beginning.? You have no knowledge of such things?"
"I'm a thief and a trickster, Luc.? What possible use could I have for magic?"? She leaned forward and set the paper on the table in front of the lounge they were seated upon.? Then she turned and took his hands in hers and gave them a gentle squeeze.? "I think I might know a way for you to learn sorcery," she said in a very hesitant voice.
"You do not sound very convinced, ma chere," he said, leaning forward a bit.? "What is it?"
She frowned softly and made a thoughtful face.? "Well," she began at length.? "Do you remember when I told you that vampire society mirrored that of the humans?"
"I do.? What of it?"
"Well, as in human society, there are politics and wars and silly things like battles over territories."
"Wars between the clans?" he asked.
"Wars between the clans and wars between groups of clans.? It's all sort of murky and doesn't quite make sense to me, but there are three groups of vampire clans - the Camarilla, the Sabbat, and the Independents.? Ravnos are independent, by the way."?
"I see," he said.? "So these groups, they are made up of more than one sort of vampyre?"
She nodded.? "Most Clans belong to the Camarilla.? They rule most of Europe.? They're very strict and like to force their ways on everyone.? The Sabbat, though, they're more...free, I guess.? A lot of them came over here about a hundred years ago or so.? New York is controlled by the Sabbat, in fact."
"Ah, so they are rebels as well, like the Colonies."
"Yes, exactly so.? According to the bits and pieces of gossip I've been able to pick up, New York's Bishop is a former member of the Camarilla.? She held the city of Prague, before leaving and joining the Sabbat."
He nodded, understanding.? "And you think she will know about the existence of sorcery?"
"She's very, very old, Luc.? Hundreds upon hundreds of years.? She will know."? Her face sobered and became very serious.? "But it will be very dangerous for us.? The Sabbat are fond of Diablerie and you and I could make someone very powerful."
He was silent for several moments, thinking.? He shifted on the lounge, hands tightening their grip on hers.? "I believe that our search will fail if I cannot find a supernatural means of increasing the potency of any alchemical potion I may create."
"Then you must be willing to fight not only for the knowledge, but for your very existence as well."? She leaned forward, dropping one of his hands to raise hers and cup his cheek.? She kissed him gently, her lips soft and pliant against his.? "But be sure of this need before we go before the Bishop and her Court. I will not lose you, Luc," she said softly, fiercely.
