"Left!" the male voice shouted, his arms waiving directions as a huge wall hung suspended atop the roof from a couple of shuttle craft at each end. "Another six centimeters!"
The men below the shuttles grabbed the cables as the wall moved ever so slowly into place. They were quick to slip the wall into the brackets so the shuttles could lower them down into place.
With the damage from the Scarred attacks, Alex decided to renovate during the repairs. A third story was being added to each of the three wings along with other additions initially with the idea to house guards and their immediate families. What had started out to be additions for housing his own Exodian guards, stationed here in RhyDin, was quickly turning out to be more then that.
There were so many businesses that had been demolished during the attacks, and many could not afford to renovate and reopen. Many lost their jobs and some had come knocking on the Compound's doors asking Alex for some kind of employment. Some needed shelter. Others were interested in the technology the Exodians had. They wanted to learn.
At first Alex only took a few in, giving them jobs to help in the repairs and in turn teaching them to use the higher technology. However, it soon really hit Alex just how uneducated the people of RhyDin were when it came to the more advanced technology. Most people didn't know what to do with it. He found that he needed to teach far more then he had anticipated. The compound was becoming more like a school as more came to be included in that kind of working atmosphere.
But he couldn't keep this up forever. Alex had to draw the line somewhere. How was he going to afford to pay them all to learn? He couldn't. So the thought to charge them a fee to learn began in the works, mostly because some could afford it and RhyDin was on its way to repairing itself and getting things back in order again.
Plans were drawn up.
He soon visited the town hall and gathered information to make his place a more official school. It seemed a university was too much, but a trade school was something he could help the community with.
"Two year degrees in a working environment would help bring the rebuilding of RhyDin, and also Exodii, back up to speed ... and then some." Alex mused as he sat in his office and finished his letter.
He glanced up to look out the window, emerald hues gazing out over the waters to the east. It was a crisp clear day full of the warmth of late spring. Much had been done and there was still much to do. With a nod, he sealed the letter with his house sigil.. and smiled as he placed it atop a pile of duplicate letters.
There were several of these letters that needed to be sent to some of the more prominent schools. If he could only associate his trade school with some of these, then the education would stand a better chance of succeeding. He certainly had a few particulars in mind.
"Jakin!" He called out loudly and looked to the door.
A boy with mousy brown hair and curious blue eyes opened the door to peer in. He couldn't have been more then ten but eager beyond most his age. "They're ready?!"
Alex grinned gently to the lad and simply nodded. The boy seemed to know already what to do. He stepped in the room and scooped up the pile of letters, placing them into the satchel hanging at his side. "Be back before supper."
"I will." Jakin nodded eagerly.
"Five, not five thirty.... or your mother will have my head." Alex held up a hand emphasizing the number, but his eyes clearly held the warning of the boy's more dominant parent.
"Yes sir!" they boy's blue gaze widened with the most serious promise he could display.
"Go on with you now! You've got a lot of ground to cover on foot. And no cheating!"
"Awe Dad! Come on! I can do it lots faster and you won't have to worry about Mom taking your head off." the boy reasoned.
Alex laughed. He knew the boy could. "The lesson isn't how fast you can fly, son. It's how well you can navigate with your feet on the ground. You know your Father wanted this done."
The point was taken. They had talked about it. While Alex was one of the boy's Daddy's, it was really to his Father that Jakin had to answer to. And his Father wanted him to practice a few skills. This was one of them.
"okay.." the boy relented and shut the door as he slipped out of the office.
Alex grinned knowing the boy would need to use his feet swiftly to all corners of RhyDin in about two hours.
