So it was upon them, the days of Solstice when the nights grew longer, the days shorter and the air freezing every breath in short lived puffs of smoke. The snow covered the ground with a light dusting, promising more as the days moved on. It was the time of Solstice, the time of year to give respect and love to one another in the form of gifts. So in the days to come, celebration in kind was due.

Exodii was no different from any other place in this respect. The city was blanketed with a light dust of snow. Mistletoe adorned nearly every doorway in the hopes of spreading that Solstice cheer.

The Citadel had descended to land where the old Burr Manor used to rest, outside Exodii City to the east about an hours ride away. The Citadel filled the crevace that the explosion of Burr manor had left so long ago. No one ever went there, and very little grew. Outside the air was cold and now covered the ground, but the inside of the manor and the immediate grounds outside of just the gardens were as warm as a summer day.

Wreaths of evergreens, ribbons and bows were placed upon the doors, clippings laid across the mantles and windows of nearly every room giving the place the fresh scent of pine. Mistletoe adorned every doorway, luring those of opposite sex to pause with the touch of admiration formed on the lips with a kiss.....

One huge evergreen tree was brought in and placed on display in the main family room, decorated with all manner of lights and prettily decorated bulbs. Presents were laid with care addressed to the various people who lived and worked there.

In rooms that had been designated as belonging to Luke, Aria and Anne, a gift was left for them upon their beds... marking the begining of the season, just the first of more to come. The gifts clearly labeled to each and were marked, Open Me Now or I'll go away! They were, of course, signed from Sha'uri.

Luke would find a Bag of Holding, Aria a pretty butterfly brooch, and Anne would find an unusually well crafted gargoyle apparently made of stone, Alex a guitar ... mother knows best... and many others would also find a single present marked with love from Sha'uri.

And thus the season of Solstice would begin.

Alex grinned as he found his. Often he had thought about it, but never found the time to go get one. He never told his mother of this, but she knew anyway. He had long ago accepted this trait of hers, one he only shared slightly. Magic had not been his forte as it was hers, but music was something he could share a commonality with her. He hadn't heard his mother sing in so long, it was a surprise that she brought him this gift, a means to a song.

He carefully placed the guitar back into its case, picked it up and took it with him on his way out to the shuttle. His destiny was the satellite to do some more work on that portal and jump gate... the gift he hoped to bring the people of Exodii planet. So far, it was coming along well and he was pleased with it's progress.

She had roused early, perhaps because some sixth sense had screamed, "You've got presents!"

Therefore, Anne awoke with a kind of instant alertness, had taken but moments to drag splayed fingers through messy auburn locks, and then set upon the gift with all the exhuberance of youth.

Fair hands plucked the small gargoyle from its box and set it on the nightstand beside her. She stared at it a long moment, unblinking.

"Well, aren't you just perfect. Since my sister cannot be here, I guess I can share all of my secrets with you."

The stone creation was spared a brilliant smile, before Anne climbed out of bed to prepare for the day. There was nothing much on her plate, save to dig through the many bags she had brought and dig out her own gifts.

Aria came out of her sleep mode soon after the gift was left, sensing the slight disturbance. She looked over the gift slowly then neatly opened it, removing the brooch. She smiled to herself and put it on.

Slipping into the hall she made her way to Luke's room, where she knocked upon the door, waited, and upon no response made her way in. The coffin sat in the middle of the room, and had taken a bit of effort to move in, as she recalled. Aria went to its side and opened the lid, giggling at the sight she beheld.

Luke was one to sleep like the dead, but when you got right to it he was dead, so that wasn't such a surprise. However, soon as the lid of his sleeping place was opened a hint of light came in and roused him, and he awoke...

...there was something on his head.

He reached up and picked the package off his forehead, looking it over and letting out a grumble.

"Sha'uri..."

He looked to the giggling Aria, frowned a tad and went back to the package, which really only got her giggling more at his reaction, but the slight upward twist at the corner of his lips lent that he wasn't totally displeased.

Luke opened his gift and examined the finely made bag of holding, nodding appreciatively. He was just about to slip it in his vest when he recalled that nasty business about putting extra-dimensional items into each other, something about explosions and being blasted into the astral plane... that would be a bother. So he draped it over a shoulder instead.

"Well, that was nice of her, I'll just need a spot to put it!"

Luke pulled himself out of his resting place, a little slower than usual, the cold had a way of slowing him down some but he tolerated it. He gave Aria a smile and took a moment to admire her brooch.

That's awfully nice, was that your present?

Aria nodded, running her hand gently over the brooch.

"Yes, I found the gift next to me in bed. I trust I put it on right?"

"Yes, you put it on fine, happy Solstice, this would be your first, wouldn't it? Well, I think you couldn't have a better bunch of people to spend it with."

A few more days went by and again people would find more gifts from Sha'uri. It began to be a daily occurance with various gifts, little things to remember her by. Some gifts were quizzical, others commical, some were practical ... like a scarf of magical warmth for Luke ... and some were just the thing to complete a wishful list. Who knew what she planned to give them on the Day of Solstice.

Alex worked dilligently over the next several days, even into the Day of Solstice itself. The perserverence seemed to pay off as the jump gates were made between orbits of Exodii Planet and RhyDin of this universe. Everything was stable during the ten jumps he made himself, something he was glad for.

The last time he tried to make a gate and jumped through it, he blew the whole thing up while slinging himself and shuttle through to the other side of the universe.... That was another story for another time from another place...

As it was, he did it right this time and made sure of it several times. Only then did he contact his mother in the early morning to inform her of his success. It seemed to have been the only present she'd been wishing for.

Alex bid his mother a Merry Solstice and returned to Exodii to have the staff prepare Solstice Dinner for later. Mother would be coming home then with a final load of gifts. He had time meditate sleep and get cleaned up. He even had time to seek his cousin, one Annelise Woodshadow...

He knocked upon her bedroom door.

"Anne? Are you in there?"

The only answer he seemed to get was the beep of his comm badge on his shoulder. He wondered what she wanted.

"Yes Mother?"

"Alex, we have some unexpected changes today. Briari apparently didn't understand dinner arraingement and he bought things for dinner and is making it right now. So, we're inviting you all here instead of us coming there. It's supposed to be specialty foods originally from his home world. It looked very interesting the things he brought back so... if you would gather up Anne, Luke, Aria, Shati if you see her around... bring them here."

"Got it, Mother. If I can find anyone I will bring them with me. If not, I'll be sure to bring their presents back and place them in their rooms..."

"That's all we can do, son. Love you."

"Love you too, Mother."

Alex signed off and waited no more at the door. He'd already been waiting long enough and it was pushing towards noon. Catching a few of the servants, he let them know the change of plans and they did the legwork, searching for these four within the Citadel Grounds. He contacted the Gigas complex on Woodshadow lands and had a search began for any of them there. Citadel Guards were dispatched into Exodii City also in search of the four.

If found, they would all be given the message that they were wanted at the Ravensheart school pronto and Alex would be leaving on the shuttlecraft within the hour. What more could he do?
