Annelise WoodShadow

When Spring had thawed the lands of Secak, Annelise WoodShadow had slid with all quietness from the hospitable home of Sha'uri. Stable was relieved of stalwart mare bred for endurance rather than speed. With an I.O.U tacked to stable door, Anne was gone. She stayed gone until the heat of the summer lay heavy in the air.

Sha'uri could probably hazard a guess as to why Anne had gone. After all, it had been the first time she had seen Secak since The Change, and that had happened when Anne was but a girl. Wanderlust. The same feeling that had drove her from her Father's home in search of her Mother's lands had driven her from her newfound family's arms into the unexplored and long abandoned regions of Secak.

Anne's wanderlust was never sated. One humid summer's evening, she sat within the wilds of Secak. Her weapons had been cleaned and polished, and meager meal of smoked meat and dried biscuits had already been consumed, along with a handful of berries that had yet to dry out in the oppressive heat. She was aware that this was probably the last of fresh berries to be found, so Anne relished the treat and thought hard upon how to supplement her diet in the coming weeks.

Perhaps the combination of full stomach and suppressing heat induced the dream-like state. Perhaps it was simply the reaching of power across planes of reality (as stranger things had happened in Rhydin and Secak, both). In any case, Anne was suddenly overcome by a feeling of dread. She felt as if some great battle were being fought - yes, there was a certain knowledge. Something of great importance was happening, she could feel it in her bones.

Even though the importance of it gripped her, Anne was in a lucid state. Her muscles were relaxed, her eyes half-lidded. It wasn't until the feeling subsided, until a flash of realization slammed into her conscious mind, that Anne really moved. When she did move, it was in a rush of activity. She was on her feet, tensed and aware. Emerald hues drifted to the night sky, full of confusion and wonderment.

Within seconds, she was on her mare, racing towards the Citadel where her family resided.

Anne had been traveling for weeks before she had decided upon a whim that she MUST return to the Citadel. The poor mare she had taken was not up for the brutal pace Anne preferred on her way back. At the first town Anne reached, then, she raced to the local Comm's office in a state of ragged breaths and sincere haste.

"I need to contact the Citadel where Sha'uri stays," she spat out between gasps.

The man behind the receptions desk blinked slowly at the clearly out of sorts and unbathed woman. "We hardly attend to requests like that," he drawled, before returning to his paperwork.

"You must have a way to contact her in emergencies! Come on, then, this is an emergency!" Annelise was already fully within the office, now, and the desperation in her voice was palatable.

The man looked unswayed, or perhaps a little cautious. His gaze trailed to the door behind him, as if gauging how many available sources he had to drag the woman out. "I think that the Mayor is the one to make those decisions," he answered cooly. "Now, kindly remove yourself from this office."

"The Mayor?!" Anne almost laughed, then recalled that it had indeed been weeks since she had a decent bathe or tended to her hair. She took a slow, calming breath for addressing the pompous man again. "My name is Annelise WoodShadow," here she paused, well satisfied by the look of shock in the man's eyes. The old royal family was well known, after all, and Anne was one of the few remaining blood WoodShadows running about. "Yes, Annelise WoodShadow, and I am in a desperate situation. So PLEASE get off of your high horse, let me into that office, and GET A HOLD OF MY COUSIN!"

The now eager-to-please man nearly fell out of his chair as he raced to fetch a superior to aid Ms. Annelise WoodShadow.

Within minutes, the communication was sent accompanied by rushed electrical whine. "This is Annelise. I'm in some bloody small town. Need transport to your location stat. Sha'uri . . . she's alive. I need you, Cousin. Out."

The note was tossed in the trash. Sha'uri had no intention of making or even letting Anne pay for the horse she needed. In her heart, she knew it was coming and thus prepared for it. Anne definitely had the heart of a halfling. Sha'uri knew sooner or later wonderlust would hit the girl, and then off she'd be in her own way. Hadn't their own grandfather Woodshadow done the same from time to time? The thought made her smile.

"This is Annelise. I'm in some bloody small town. Need transport to your location stat. Sha'uri . . . she's alive. I need you, Cousin. Out."

However, she hadn't expected a message like that. When the urgent message arrived, it wasn't hard for her to locate her cousin. She'd attached locator markers on a few of her cousin's things, like the bag of holding and the plushy hug me pillow and the catwoman sunglasses she'd given her cousin. It was a sure bet that she would have at least one of these on her.

"She's alive? Transport here stat? All right..."

Sha'uri contacted the ship and through them Anne's wishes were granted. No message was returned, though Anne would find herself being transported from where she stood and brought into the Citadel Gardens, via the ship in orbit and it's transporter. Sha'uri had been meditating and she uncrossed her legs to stand, being careful of the ever growing belly that was so very much showing into her second trimester. She gave her cousin a moment to recoup from the sometimes dizzying effect the transporter would give people for the first moment or two after they've been zapped by it. Then her questions came out with gentle tones.

"You okay? What's going on? Who's alive? Your mother?"

Well, it was the only *She* that she could think of who was supposed to be dead...

"A cup of tea? Coffee? Anything?" The man's incessant whining was getting on Anne's nerves. She wanted nothing but a reply, and was eagerly awaiting her cousin's return communication. A long-suffering look was given to the man, and her mouth opened to tell him not-so-kindly where he could stick his offerings . . .

. . . yet he was saved from the sharp edge of her tongue. The words lay half-formed upon Anne's lips before she felt a strange, dizzying sensation. The last thing she saw was his look of utter surprise before she disappeared.

In the next instant, she stood before Sha'uri in a garden, swaying mightily while her delicate equilibrium was recovered. Emerald eyes blinked wildly, taking in the scene before her.

"Eeeyaaah, Sha'uri!" She was shocked, mildly, to be standing here at the Citadel with her obviously pregnant cousin before her. Anne was not without decorum, however, and managed to fling her arms around the woman. So many questions, but gossip was far from her mind. For now, there was only one pressing matter in Anne's heart.

"Yes, she, that is my mother.

Good thing she was ready to catch all that, flinging arms and whatnot as she was suddenly wrapped up by her cousin. She returned the wrapping flung arms.

"By all the verses of the Multiverse! Come sit down and tell me, quickly! Is she all right? Where is she?"

She helped Anne over to a nearby bench and sat down with her, conjuring up a big glass of sweet water to give Anne. The girl looked pretty parched.

"Rhydin!" It was all Anne could choke out before she sank heavily onto the bench. Glass of water was accepted with grateful look, and the cool liquid was consumed in a few quick gulps. The hard ride had taken a lot from her, and only at that moment did she feel comfortable enough to let down her guard and indulge in simple needs.

"She's in Rhydin," Annelise uttered breathlessly. A few "I could feel it, her . . somehow she's back. We need to do something straight away!"

Eagerness flashed in emerald hues. Eagerness and uncertaintly. Perhaps that is why she looked so strongly upon Sha'uri. Her cousin was a leader, with knowledge and backbone enough to accomplish most any task.

Sha'uri tried to sense her aunt, but it was such a vague connection that she couldn't be sure. It dawned on her that since the Exodii system was moved into another Universe, with access readily available to its RhyDin, that her Aunt Aph was back in the other RhyDin in the old universe which the realm of Secak used to have easy access to. It would explain why it was difficult to feel her;, though she was sure that Anne would feel that connection with her mother far more keenly. The question of which universe or which RhyDin might freak Anne out right now and Sha'uri would try to avoid it for the present.

"Anne... is she in danger? Can you locate her more specifically?"

"What? No," she said impatiently as fingers tapped a hectic rhythm at the bench's edge. "No, I can't sense anything more than the fact that she's alive. It's so faint, like it could disappear at any moment."

The younger woman frowned, and worry became markedly more evident. "Do you think there's a problem?"

Shauri

Sha'uri was thoughtfully and calmly quiet as she looked to Anne. It seemed the subject was unavoidable and so she would try to relay this as gently as she could.

"You could answer that better then I, being directly of her blood. Could be she's in another universe.... and since RhyDin exists in many universes and has a connection to them all, we can sense her through that. Being faint might just mean she's not in THis universe but in another."

A moment passed to allow Anne a moment to absorb that.

"The Exodii System we're in now only exists in one universe. It is not the same as the place where Secak used to have its connections into RhyDin, if that makes any sense.... and it will if you think about how things used to be. I know you were young then, but perhaps not so young that you didn't feel it. Think about that for a few moments..."

Again, another moment was given. Woodshadows, similar to Erim, were Extra Planar beings and in that they could sense the shifts between planes and even universes to a degree. It was to that specific connection Secak used to have with RhyDin that Sha'uri was referring to, and the difference between the feel of that and the connection from Exodii System into RhyDin here and how it was different.

"Now, try to understand that there is a difference... and then knowing and accepting that fact, try to think of your mother and see if you can't feel where she's at a little more clearly or at least if she's all right."

A gentle reassuring hug was given before she got up and moved a few paces away, giving Anne some time to think on her own a bit. For some reason, Sha'uri felt it was important for Anne to do this.
