It had taken a few days of looking before Johnny found the right place ? places, actually, since his mother had sent him a message while she and his sisters were traveling.

?Johnny, I?ve been farmin? with yer pa m?whole life. If yer thinkin? I want another farm ta be takin? care of with no man around ta help, just take another think, m?boy. I want a place in th? city, near all th? shops, that doesn?t take keepin? up all hours of th? day an? night. If?n ya want a place out in th? country, too, that?s yer business ? but get me a place around people!?

It had rather surprised him, actually ? he would have expected his mother to want to move the family to a place as close to what they were used to as possible. Still, his mother?s word was his command, and Johnny found a house in the city that he thought would suit her. On the south side of the Marketplace, actually looking out over the Market Square, it was an old house that looked like it had seen better years, but it came fully furnished.

The price was exorbitant, its owner asking a small fortune due to its prime location and completely overlooking the work it would take to restore the house to its former glory ? or even a state past bare livability! It was still the only place near the Market that Johnny could find within reach of his budget, and buying it took most of the reserves he had built up over the years. He was able to buy it free and clear that way, though, without bringing a bank or a loan into the bargain, and the offer to pay in cash had lowered the asking price a fair bit.

Fortunately, Johnny had better luck looking for a farm out in the countryside. He still wanted that farm ? he knew not all of his sisters were happy about giving up the family homestead on Hope, and he wanted to offer them something that made up for it, at least partially. It had taken some hiking, looking for a place that was right, but finally, a good half-day ride by horse north of the city walls, he found it.

A small farmstead, it looked to have been abandoned for some time. It would take some cleaning, and some minor repairs, but nothing unreasonable. The house was closed up neatly, but there was no evidence of belongings that would have remained if the family were intending on returning. Inquiries in the city turned up no owners on record ? the last family to have owned the place had left the country suddenly. Effectively, it was free for the taking ? so he did, putting up a neat sign out front reading ?The Smith Farm?.

He would have to sell a few more pieces before he could afford to hire someone to do the repairs beyond his abilities. He would also have to make a trip out here with a wagon and cleaning supplies ? maybe Sianna would agree to help him with a day of cleaning. He drifted for a moment, thinking about that, and a smile worked itself onto his face without his notice.

Hopefully he would have time to get everything ready before his family arrived ? unfortunately, travel times were as reliable as they had been centuries ago, and the vast distances to cover only magnified the problems. He could only hope they would think to message him from Gateway Station, because for all he knew, they could arrive later today, or sometime next week. Johnny grinned, more excited than he would have expected, looking forward to introducing his family to the world that he had made his home.

Johnny had spent the previous day working on minor repairs within the house at the Marketplace - small things, fixing leaky faucets and running toilets. The plumbing was unsophisticated by the standards he was used to, but advanced for Rhy'din, and had been one of the selling points of this house. Unfortunately, no maintenance had been done on the plumbing in quite some time, and it took a while, along with some swearing and barked knuckles, before he got everything working properly again.

After that had been some other essential repairs. Johnny wasn?t a carpenter, by any means, and once some more pieces were sold he would probably hire one for the larger work. However, the front step that was half-rotted through had to be fixed immediately, and so did the hole in one bathroom wall where it looked like something had been thrown straight through. So fix these things he did, accompanied by more swearing and a bruised thumb to go with his barked knuckles.

Some cursory cleaning, picking up the worst of the debris that had accumulated over the time the house was unoccupied, ate up the rest of the day. It looked like drifters had squatted for a while in the place as well, and he pulled his shirt up over his nose to help with the smell as he gathered the heap of filthy rags (someone?s bed?) and dumped the pile out for collection.

It was evening before he made it back to his apartment in Old Town. He intended to take a quick shower and head back over to the Red Dragon Inn, hoped to see Sianna there. He sat down on the edge of the bed to pull off his work boots, and, that accomplished, he lay back on top of the spread with a long sigh, arms thrown out to the side. He closed his eyes, just for a moment? he would only rest a moment before he got up again? and he was sound asleep.

The letter arrived badly abused, but still in tact for the most part. The small wax seal had seen better days, but Juliane's initials were still distinctive. The elected messenger, having knocked on the door to the stuido repeatedly, shrugged once before attempting to cram it under the door.

When Johnny finally found it, the carefully folded pages opened to reveal a clean letter in flowing black script, with pen and ink carricatures of parels, trunks, and four widely varied women that he knew very well scattered all about the edges.

Dear brother...

I am sure the fact that you are exactly six minutes older has given you the sense of necessity in now herding all of us to Rhy'din so that you can "look after" us. Please tell me that you have thought long and hard about it because once we arrive, I absolutely refuse to ever move anywhere again.

You cannot imagine what it has been like.... But he could. Their mother had never left Hope and had never gone very far from the farm in all her days. Nevermind the fact that she was nervous wreck as memory of Meggie's travel haunted her still. Gabby's tongue seemed to be the propelling force of the ship for it had certainly not slowed a moment. Her approval, and more often her disapproval, rained down on everyone and everything with in range. All except for Juliane. And the baby? Well, the sketches showed just a mop of hair peering out around an old stuffed dog the twins had shared, wide eyes soaking up the rapidly changing landscape.

Do not fret though. We are still in one piece and plan to remain that way if I have anything to do with it. Expect us at any time (you know how travel can be). Hopefully the larger items that I sent on ahead will make it there before us.

~ Juliane

His twin had signed it simply, with all her love implied. The large swirl of the "J" so different from his own concise print. Hers ranged close to calligraphy without even a half-hearted try.

He started to fold the paper, when a tiny line caught his eye at the bottom.

P.S. I do not care where you have found for us to live as long as I can have some peace and quiet.... and my paints! All of their yammering is slightly sending me mad. ~ J.

And with that he laughed right out loud, counting down the days until they finally arrived.

Moving, to say the least sucked. Tali wasn't happy to be leaving the only home she had know to go see a big brother she barely knew. Everything she owned was packed away in trunks, and the sisters... Well they were so caught up in their own troubles at times Tali doubted that they remembered she was there.

What was this Rhy'din place Johnny wanted them to move to like? Mama said they were going to live in the city not on a farm this time. That could be interesting at least. Maybe Mama would let her explore by herself.

Juliane was fretting about her paints, and about Mama fretting.. and Gabriella was just plain being mean again. Maybe this would be a good time for Tali to slip away for a few minutes.

"Mama, I'll be right back."

Gabby had been keeping mostly to herself. It wasn't that she didn't like traveling, she did. It was that this particular time traveling was a signal of defeat. Though young, there was nothing she loved more than her family homestead, and to lose it was as traumatic as losing a limb.

And so she was off by herself mending some stockings. Her mood was foul, it was always foul lately, and the only noise she was making was a soft muttering. Without thinking her hand slipped and the needle slid into her opposite finger.

"Oh, good grief!" She hollared, sticking the finger in her mouth and peering around to see if she had drawn too much attention to herself.
