Katarina squinted her eyes in her distance to try and get a better look of Expressions of Hope. Even from her walking distance, she could tell that Johnny had put effort back into the store since his arrival. The windows held a certain gleam and a stranger walked out of the store looking relatively pleased. Taking a deep breath, she adjusted the thick, bright red belt that stood out against her white shirt dress. She wasn't sure if she was truly ready to reach out again, but she wouldn't know unless she gave it a shot. With the comfort of food in a bag, she opted for a positive result.

Hair was haphazardly brushed out of her face as before she pushed the door open and gave the store a quick glance around, "Jo?"

Johnny hadn?t looked up when the door to the shop had opened; he finished locking the small safe underneath the counter before he looked over at Katarina and grinned wide. ?Katie-kat! Ain? seen ya in ferever ? ya been hidin? or too busy goin? travellin??? He couldn?t resist it, and emerald eyes were bright with the tease about her recent trip to meet Locke?s family.

"I squeezin' ya 'n ta mah busy schedule righ' now, ain' I?" She brushed off that tease with a large grin, "Ain' mah faul' he was quicka ta git me plans fer th' weekend." She held up the bags of food teasingly, "I dun suppose an' apology an' some food's gonna make up fer it?"

?Waallll?.? Johnny drawled out the word, pretending to consider her offer. ?I s?pose so, though I shouldn? le? ya off th? hook tha? easy. Better be a lo? of food there, though.? With a chuckle, Johnny finally rounded the counter to head toward the door with a ?Closed for Lunch? sign in one hand. As he passed Katie, he caught her for a quick one-armed hug.

She smirked, "I think 've brough' ya 'nough food bafore ta know tha' ya'd clean me dry 'n a week." She returned the hug, finding that it was just exactly what she needed, "Thanks fer lettin' me crash 'n by. 've missed ya."

?Wha?m I goin? ta do, turn away m? favorite cousin? Especially when she?s bringin? food? Ya know me better?n tha?, Snowflake. Pull up one?a th? seats ta th? counter.? With the sign in place, Johnny re-crossed the room and dragged over one of the tall seats that customers used when they were consulting about their wishes. He sank into it with a sigh. ?Tha?s better. Ya take a break from practicin? or are ya off t?day??

She placed the bags of drinks and food on the table, before mirroring his movement in pulling up a chair to sit on, "Nah, I go' practice lata tonigh'. Wantin' da be doin' dress rehearsals an' thin's fer th' show." She pulled out a sandwich at random, as well as a water bottle, before handing it over to Johnny.

Leaning over to take both sandwich and water, Johnny paused a moment. ?Yeah ? tha? remin?s me, go? ta stop by th? kiosk an? ge? th? ticke?s fer tha?. When?s openin?? An? I take i? yer bringin? Locke again ? goin? ta ge? him backstage again?? With sandwich in hand, he put the water bottle on the counter for the moment. ?Or di? his family scare ya runnin? away??

"It opens nex' Friday, Jo. Duncha look a' th' posters floatin' 'round?" She raised a blond brow before mulling over the rest of his question. She took her time getting her own water and half a sandwich before taking a disguised breath, "Ya, he's goin'. Nah backstage, a' leas' th' firs' nigh'. I go' ya'll tickets sittin' togetha. An' his family didn' scare me off. They were nice, if a li'l reserved. An' even if they had, it dun matta." Anything dramatic had always suited Katarina best, "I love him." It was said with a straight face and her eyes sharply on her cousin before taking a bite of her sandwich.

About to reply with a laughing remark about the posters, or a tease about Locke?s family, Johnny was left stunned by Katarina?s last statement. His mouth ? already opened in anticipation of speech ? hung for a moment before he shut it with a snap. ?Wai? ? back up an? say tha? one again. Ain? sure I?m hearin? ya righ?.? He wasn?t teasing her; he was shocked. After Cal, Katie had wrapped herself up in a cheerful demeanor and used that to keep people at arm?s-length. Johnny knew she was very fond of Locke, but, ?Love??

"Yeah, ya heard me righ'. Love." She repeated it for his stunned benefit. Watching him carefully, she took another bite of her sandwich, and continued to talk like they were discussing simple matters, "Bu' it does help tha' his family didn' boot me ou' o' th' door."

?Well, yeah, tha?s always a goo? thin?.? Johnny?s answer was almost distracted. ?Snowflake ? feelin? mutual? An? he know wha? yer tellin? me?? Two simple but very critical questions so that he could decide how to respond. At the moment, he still looked very much as if someone had applied a 2? x 4? to the back of his skull.

"Yes ta th' firs' question, an' nah ta th' second, bu' 'm sure he's go' a pretty good guess. Yer mah family, Jo. An' hav' been mah closest friend tha' been 'round all mah life." She drummed her fingers on top of her sandwich, "I dun wan' ta keep secrets no more, yeah? I need support, an' so does he. Where else am I gonna find it?"

Breath whooshed out, and then he looked over at her and grinned. ?Can think?a a whole peck?a people, bu? sure as I?m one?a them. Ya know ya ain? even go? ta ask fer suppor? ? I jus? wanted ta make sure I wasn? goin? ta have ta whale on Locke until he came ta his senses abou? ya. Like th? guy, ya know?? He winked one emerald eye at her and grinned around a large bite of his sandwich. Chewing hastily, he swallowed before he added, ?Speakin? a suppor?, had an idea. Nee? ta talk ta ya an? him t?gether abou? it.?

Her calculated look to him eased and relaxed. She hadn't really anticipated any other kind of answer, but it didn't take away from the depths of his words. "Ya, 've seen wha' ya've done ta Perry." She mumbled with a grin that was almost lopsided, before she gave him a mildly surprised look, "Yeah, an' wha's tha'?"

The innocent, ?who, me?? look that Johnny gave her at her remark about Peredhil was almost perfect. He had, after all, had a lot of practice giving it while they were growing up. Not that he expected it to work any better than it ever had. The look fell away with a laugh and a shake of his head. Taking another bite of his sandwich, Johnny held up one hand to Katie and wiggled his fingers at her. Mouth full, he didn?t try to explain yet ? just let the light catch against the mesh in his hands.

His look confirmed what she already knew, so she rolled her eyes and mumbled, "Someone's gotta put people 'n line." Taking a long sip of her water, she squinted her eyes as his wiggled fingers caused light to go into her eyes. It took her several moments more to vaguely understand the gesture. "Yer mods?" A tentative question as she started once more into her sandwich.

?Mm-hmm.? It was more of a mumbled assent around the last bite of his sandwich. A woeful expression crossed his face as he looked at his empty hands. ?Ya go? another of those aroun? with ya?? This time he tried for appealing in his look at her. Clearly, he wasn?t going to expand on his idea without something more to eat.

"I tol' ya I knew how much ya ate, didn' I?" She simply pushed the bag of sandwiches over for his inspection. She had only barely made it halfway through hers. She swallowed the bite in her mouth before asking the obvious question, "An' jist wha' 'bout yer mods?"

Rifling through the bag to inspect its contents, Johnny looked up and shrugged. ?Go? some features worth thinkin? abou? fer th? two?a ya.? He paused, concentrating for a heartbeat, and then reached over to his unopened bottle of water. Wrapping his hand fully about the bottle, he held it for a second or two before tossing it in her direction. It wasn?t fully frozen, by any means, but there was a thin rime of ice forming in the shape of his hand.

"How perfectly vague." She modified her smirk into a small crinkling of her nose. Returning to her sandwich as he went through the bag, he caught her off guard with the toss and it was with sheer luck that she had put the sandwich down just in time to catch it. She watched with mild interest as the thin film of ice cracked and started to float within the water. "Okay, ya kin make thin's cold. Dun thin' tha's our problem." It was a lame quip for a joke, before setting down the bottle in front of him.

Mid-bite of another sandwich, Johnny rolled his eyes expressively. It was another familiar gesture, one that said without words, ?C?mon, you?re smarter than that.? He was too busy eating to actually add the phrase ? which was likely just as well.

She scowled then, "Well, ya ain't helpin'. If ya jist tol' me wha' ya're thin'in', it'd make thin's all th' easier. Bu', tha's too easy fer ya." Sighing, she put the obvious pieces together. "Okay, so ya kin make thin's cold, which would mean tha' cold thin's dun botha ya."

As soon as the carriage had stopped in front of the Silver Lark, Locke hopped out, nearly tossing his payment to the driver in his haste to exit. He didn't look back to see if he'd tipped too much or too little, but rather pulled the strap up on his messenger bag so it didn't slide off his arm as he ran to the door. He tugged at the door handle to test if it was unlocked, before pulling it all the way open and calling inside. "Oi, mates, I'm here!" He peered around the interior, trying to see where they were.

The pair weren't hard to spot, with tall chairs normally used by customers pulled up to one of the counters, sandwiches and water on its surface. Johnny swallowed his current bite and grinned. "Speakin'a col' thin's no' botherin' me.... Yer tricksy, Katie-kat."

She gave a clever grin and wiggled her brows, "An' ya 'xpected othawise?" She looked over to Locke and shot him a smile, "Nice fer ya ta join us. I go' sandwiches." She pointed to the bag in front of Johnny, before she leaned rather unsafely to grab another tall chair and swing it around the counter for Locke to join them.

He grinned as he stepped in, weaving expertly around the display cases to approach the counter. He slid his bag off the shoulder to the floor near the chair that was pulled up, before sitting down. "Good afternoon. How is everybody faring? Terribly sorry I'm late." He was a bit more adventurous in his apparel than usual. While the black lace-ups, black trousers, and white dress shirt were fairly standard, the brick red blazer he wore was definitely a bit daring. Still, he seemed to wear it like he was born in it.

"Bein' fed so 'm doin' jus' fine. Jus' abou' ta enlighten Snowflake abou' th' finer poin's of m'mods - since seems she din' think tha' much abou'em b'fore." Johnny nodded to the water bottle on the counter with the thin film of ice floating within it (and slowly starting to melt). "Ain' so col' as ya ge' an' all, bu' close enough ya can bear i' withou' much trouble, I be'."

"Withou' much trouble?" She frowned and thought about that as she grabbed the bag to grab another half of a sandwich. "I 'member Cal bein' real worried 'bout ya when ya go' them thin's."

"Right-o." He was inspecting the sandwiches now that he was properly seated, snaring an unopened bottle and opening it with a quick twist of his wrist. He drank from it greedily, apparently more than a little thirsty from hurrying over (even if it was mostly by carriage).

At that reminder, Johnny made a face. ?Well, yeah ? an? fair enough, he ha? cause. I was gettin?? call i? th? trial version. Ya know when they have ta try new thin?s on people b?fore they ge? sol? ta jus? everybody? Like tha?. Why they pai? me some fer i?, too. Bu? mos?a wha? I go? is on th? marke? now, an? th? stuff tha? ain? ? well, tha? ain? thin?s ya?d nee?.? He shrugged. ?Unless ya feel th? burnin? desire ta star? lookin? inta five-six kin?s a vision an? moldin? metal an? stone with yer bare han?s.?

"A prototype, if you will." Locke nodded to Johnny, then looked over to Katarina to see her reaction.

Johnny nodded agreement to Locke's words, another bite of sandwich keeping him from a verbal reply.

"Tha's righ'. Said it wasn' a real shiny contract." She shook her head as the memory showed up clear, if for only a few seconds. She was silent as she thought, her face blank. "Okay, so I'd need jist th' basics, er whateva. How much o' it changed yer lifestyle? Like," she gestured to his food, "how much food ya need now. Mah body's may career."

Locke chimed in with a question of his own, between sips of water. "And who all received these mods? Was it mostly human blokes and birds such as yourself?"

At the questions, Johnny frowned a bit and then shrugged one shoulder. ?Sure, hav?ta ea? more now ? bu? tha?s ?cause i? ge?s burned off ? mostly by th? metal-work. Energy ta power th? mods comes from ya. So, yeah, imagine if?n ya were keepin? yerself col? all th? time ya?d have ta ea? a lo? more. If?n ya only did i? when ya needed to, prolly no? as much. An? like I sai? ? ain? like ya?d be puttin? on weigh?. Fact, ya coul? prolly add some?a th? same bone an? tendon reinforcemen?s I go? on m? wrists an? arms ta yer legs an? ankles.? Taking a breath, he thought about Locke?s question and then went on more slowly.

?Goo? question, bro ? far?s I know, th? mods I go? have only ever been trie? on humans. If?n ya were worried abou? kids, they can add a twis? ta pass on thin?s ta them, bu? since ya ain? human they?d prolly wan? ta run some tests on ya alon? with th? go?roun? tha? Katie would nee?.?

"Kids." The word brought a clouded expression to Locke's face, and he found himself reaching for a sandwich to stuff into his mouth to hide it. Once he was done chewing, he shook his head slowly, looking at Katarina mostly with his lip curled up into a half-grin, half-grimace. "This is my cross to bear, mate."

She blinked several times as Johnny went leaps and bounds ahead of her thoughts. She shook her head slightly to clear the thoughts. "Hol' 'n, Jo." She held a finger for Locke, and gave a reassuring smile, before looking back to Johnny. "We ain't discussed it, bu' let's jist hypothetically talk 'bout kids. All o' Locke is cold. So... wha', I'd need mods all ova me? Even then, 'm nah sure..." she trailed off, finding that once again she was facing a subject she never ever wanted to cross with her cousin. Now it was her turn to turn her attention to her sandwich.

Again Johnny shrugged casually. He?d obviously followed that particular train of thought all the way to its conclusion before he brought it up. ?Yeah, ?course it would be all over. Ain? like it?d show or anythin? ? only reason I go? th? visible par?s is for actually shapin? wha? I work with. Temperature?s all done a? th? sub-surface level.?

Locke looked back and forth between the pair. "Have we exhausted this train of thought? Because if we have, I may have another for us to jump on."

She shook her head once more, quite certain Johnny had not fully understood her implications. However, Locke's announcement brought her out of her frown to raise a brow, "Yeah?"

"Sure, bro - jump away."

He sent a knowing look Johnny's way, before (hopefully) reminding him with two words of a long forgotten plan. "The rings."

"Th' rings?" Her face blanked for several moments, before realization came, "*Tha's* wha' ya had 'n yer pocket a' th' inn those weeks ago."

Johnny blinked at Locke ? he hadn?t forgotten those rings, but having heard no mention of them in so long, ?I though? they din? work ?r somethin?. Made those fer ya ages ago, bro ? figgered when ya din? say anythin? more abou? them tha? they weren? righ? ?r somethin?.?

"I never even put it on my longer, mate. Never had the chance." He devoured the remainder of his sandwich. "It was only recently that I was able to get back the second one," he said, with a nod in Katarina's direction to confirm her realization. "And I still have not been able to lay my ivories on the third one. Chase managed to do something to it, made herself blue for a spell, but...it never progressed much farther than that." The words were tinged with a bit of regret.

Now Johnny frowned with puzzlement and thought. ?D?ya nee? all three? An? wha?s th? deal, ya jus? pu? them on an? they work ta do wha?ever they do, or d?y?all have ta do anythin? else?? When he had made the rings, Johnny didn?t know Locke well enough to ask what the purpose of those rings was, exactly, or what it would take to ?finish? them.

She fought the urge to rub her temples, her mind still trying to wrap around the possibility of any sort of modifications on any part of her, much less almost everything. "Bu' i's a possibility, nonetheless." She set down her half-finished sandwich, and finished the remainder of her water. With all of Johnny's questions mirroring her own, she simply looked over to Locke for the answers.

"Having the rings made with the special enchanted silver was only half the battle. The other half - well, I'll be buggered if I know precisely what it was." Locke turned to Katarina momentarily. "You saw my mum. She was about as normal as any elf with white hair can appear, savvy?" After that, he addressed both of them. "I was going to school because I was promised that if I made it through Uni, received my undergraduate degree, and was accepted into their Master's of Magical Arts program, they would give me access to their rare magic spells collection, which (I was told) was bound to have it." He twisted his lips into a wry grin. "That didn't quite happen."

"All I know is that it is a ritual spell that involves family. Or people who care deeply about you. To the best of my knowledge."

"Family 'r people who care deeply abou' ya - well, if'n i' has ta be family then we can' help ya much, but carin' abou'..." Johnny trailed off and looked at Katie before he grinned. "Say ya go' a' leas' one taker in Katie-kat. Don' know how close tha' carin' has ta be, bu' I'll throw in too if ya nee' i', bro."

She gave Johnny a sidelong look before rolling her eyes and muttering "O' course he does." She seemed off into thought, pursing her lips slightly, "An' 'm guessin' yer ma dunno th' ritual spell?"

Locke shook his head to Katarina's question. "Mum had the spell put on her by my father and my uncle. I had the spell put on me originally by my father and mum." He lifted a hand up to brush over top of his hair, briefly. "I was lucky to even find the spell for enchanting the silver in my mum's things, and I had to spend some time puzzling over it to figure it out."

Johnny frowned a little at this point, trying to work out the track of the spell. ?Bu? if?n yer ma cas? i? on ya th? firs? time, can she teach someone th? other par?? Or was i? yer pa tha? knew th? spell an? she was jus? helpin? ou??? He realized, rather belatedly, that he knew very little about Locke?s family connections.

Johnny stole the questions right from her mind. Finding herself unable to finish the rest of her sandwich, she silently slid it over to Johnny before looking back to Locke.

"I believe it was the latter, but I do not know for sure. Mum hasn't exactly been...forthcoming with information, when I've asked her for it." Talk of his father, his biological father, was a difficult issue for Locke, but not painful. He looked thoughtful, not sad, at the discussion.

With a frown, Johnny nodded before he picked up the remaining piece of sandwich Katie had passed over. ?She no? wan? ya ta ge? tha? spell fixed ?r somethin?? I mean, why wouldn? she try ta help ya bes? she could?? And then he shook his head. ?Guess tha? doesn? matter so much as if?n ya have any ideas where else we could look fer th? spell.?

"Ya'd think findin' somethin' like this would be real easy 'round here, yeah?" She shook her head slowly, her fingers drumming over the side of her water, "The place wit' the bigges' assortmen' o' people."

"It doesn't help that my magical talent, compared to some blokes and birds around here, is quite small. I have a rather limited skill set." He reached for the bottle of water he had set aside some time ago, taking sips to try and clear the lump in his throat. "I think...mum wanted me to go to Uni so I would have to earn it, prove to her that I deserved it. And by getting expelled, I quite clearly didn't, in her minces." He didn't roll his eyes, or flare his nostrils, or show any other sign of anger. Instead, he looked down at his shoes, clearly shamed.

?Bu? tha?s ? ? Once again, Johnny broke off, frowned, and started again more carefully. ?Did she hav?ta earn th? spell? Or make ya earn i? when ya were younger b?fore i? go? broken??

Locke answered meekly, eyes still on the floor. "I suppose not."

She crinkled her nose, "I's fine. Yer ma kin't be th' only person ta know, yeah?"

Somewhat disgusted by the injustice of Locke?s mother?s demand, Johnny kept his peace for the moment, using the opportunity to finish the last of his food. A tilt upward of his chin was his agreement with Katie?s statement.

The conversation had sapped most of Locke's appetite; he lifted his head up to look at what remained and instantly turned away, as if the sight alone might make him ill. "Right-o. Rhydin is too large a world - and connected to far too many other worlds - for this search to go fruitless for much longer."

? 'Exac'ly. We'll figure somethin' ou' between th' three o' us, yeah?" She turned the plastic bottle repeatedly within her hands, "I dunno how many connections through th' theatre tha' kin help, bu' it kin't hurt tryin'. An' there's na a thin' 'n Hope tha' could help.. wha' 'bout any o' yer other travels, Jo?"

At Katie?s question, Johnny thought for a moment before shrugged and shook his head. ?Can pu? ou? some feelers, bu? mos? a th? places I?ve been are more tech?n magic. Can only think?a? mebbe two places had somethin? tha? migh? be close?? He frowned, turning it over in his head. ?An? I still ain? sure tha? half?a wha? I saw there wasn? jus? tricks an? showmanship.?

"Sleight of hand." Locke waggled his right hand, pretending to palm a coin or flourish a bunch of playing cards. "To those who are not in the know, it would be just as good as real magic."

?Yeah, ?sactly. Think some?a wha? they di? migh?a been real, bu? I ain? sure how much?r wha? parts. Ain? leavin? again ta go see, no? so soon ? sorry, bro. I can? do tha? now. Can mebbe se? ya up with some letters ta people I know, though, if?n ya wan?ed ta try tha? yerself.?

Katarina's mind felt slightly overwhelmed. There were several options to try for a rather serious situation. Sighing softly and shaking her head, she gave a quick smile to the pair, "I thin's i's all a good place ta star', yeah? 'm gonna thin' more 'bout those mods, Jo. Bu' righ' now, I gotta go back ta mah room an' git ready fer rehearsal." She slid off of her stool with ease, returning it to it's place before walking over to Johnny to give him a hug, "Thanks fer yer help, Jo."

?Anytime, Snowflake, ya know tha?.? Johnny said it with a smile as he returned Katie?s hug. ?An? thanks fer bringin? by lunch.?

"It certainly couldn't hurt. I need all the bloody help I can get. I hate to hog your time, mate, but do you think I could borrow you for a touch longer? I have a couple pieces of business to discuss with you." He looked over to Katarina expectantly, once she had said her goodbyes to Johnny.

With a rather puzzled nod, Johnny agreed to Locke?s request. ?Sure thin?, bro. Nice thin? abou? ownin? this place is I can keep i? shu? fer lunch long as I wan?.?

"Anytime." She gave Locke an interested look, but at his expectant look, she grinned and walked over to give him a more lingering hug, "I'll come bah lata, yeah?"

"Sounds aces," he murmured, returning the hug with a soft pat to her back before pulling away. "Tenna' telwan, Katarina."*

"Tenna' san'."** She broke the hug and gave him a quick squeeze to his closest shoulder. Giving them both one last smile, she quietly exited herself from the shop.

Once Katarina had left the shop, Johnny looked back at Locke with interest. ?So wha? business di? ya have tha? ya din? wan? her aroun? fer??

There was a dreamy, far-off look to his eye when she left, and it took him a little longer than might have been expected to finally respond. Which was why he jumped a little in his seat when Johnny addressed him. "Oh! Two pieces of business. One business business, the other personal. Take your pick which you would like to discuss first." Locke held up his hand again, knuckles facing Johnny, as if holding up a hand of cards for the silversmith to select for a magic trick.

There was just the faintest baritone rumble of a chuckle from Johnny as he watched Locke?s far-off look. Once the ice elf had regathered his composure, Johnny grinned. A silver-meshed finger pointed to one of the imaginary cards. ?Star? with th? real business an? then we can talk personal. Figger th? business business will be done quicker?n th? personal an? then we can take our time on th? importan? stuff.?

He pantomimed tossing a card at Johnny, grinning before pulling his hand back closer to his body. "I'm starting to work on designing another collection, for September, for Spring. I would like to enlist your assistance in making some accessories for it. Tie clips, collar pins, cuff links, things like that. Interested?"

It didn?t take much thought at all before Johnny grinned. ?Sure am. Figger can? help bu? be some goo? exposure fer th? shop, an? things like tha? ain? har? ta make. Ya go? any particular themes in min?, thin?s ya wan? ta see or don? wan? tha would fi? with wha? yer doin??? He was clearly enthusiastic about the idea.

Locke answered simply and silently, by tapping the dangling snowflake earrings on each ear.

Another chuckle rumbled through the shop. ?Sure, tha? makes sense. Ya wan? jus? like those, make i? a trademark thin?, or variations on th? theme??

As an afterthought, he added, ?An? ya?ll hav?ta le? me know how much?a each thin? ya wan?.?

"Well, you know what they say..." He trailed off into his own laughter, before continuing. "Every snowflake is unique. But also...ice elves actually have two distinct languages. A spoken version, which is mostly similar enough to the common elvish spoken by most elves in these parts, and a written version. The written version is similar to calligraphy, only they use snowflakes to stand in for letters, words, and concepts. Savvy?"

?Yeah ? ain? th? weirdes? thin? I?ve hear? of, bu? ain? common either.? Johnny nodded his understanding of the concept. ?So ya go? specific letters, words, such-like tha? ya wan? me usin???

"I will have to search my memory banks, and possibly talk to mum and see if she knows any words. The average losedhil didn't have much reason to learn the language, from what little my mum has told me. I only know a handful of words myself. My name being one of them. But yeah, that would seem to be the best way to go. As for the amount..." He paused to scratch his head, then his chin. "We would probably only need a handful at first. Just enough to put on the runway models. Ideally, Gerard would let me start selling them in store, but I won't know if he will sign off on that idea until the show is finished."

?Tha? makes sense. All righ?, I?ll make ? say ten each of cuff links, collar pins, tie clips an? tacks an? such once ya give me th? designs ya wan?. When?s yer show?? Johnny had managed to pull a piece of paper and a pen from beneath the counter, and now he was taking down scrawled notes on the deal. ?Since i?s really goin? ta be an advertisin? thin? fer th? shop, ain? goin? ta charge ya anythin? for i?, so I jus? nee? ta know th? deadline.?

"Middle of September, if my sources are correct. Though the spring shows are a little less hard and fast in terms of when they go off compared to the fall shows. It's a little more informal, and not quite as important. I can let you know when the details are more firmly set in stone."

?Sure, tha?s plenty ?a time. All righ?, tha?s business ou?a th? way ? wha?s th? personal, bro?? Johnny grinned over at Locke. Business was one thing, but family was another ? and if Locke wanted to talk to him about something personal, it was just as likely to be about family.

Locke hopped off his stool and walked over to stand in front of Johnny. He looked the silversmith dead in the eye, before speaking slowly and measuredly. "Before I talk about my business, I wanted to double-check on yours. How are you and Sianna faring?"

At that question, Johnny made a bit of a face before he shrugged ? but he had no hesitation in meeting Locke?s gaze, or in his answer. ?Mendin? thin?s is goin? slow, bu? goin?. Sometimes i? feels like two steps forwar?, one step back, ya know? Bu? tha?s still makin? progress in th? righ? direction.? He thought over his words for a moment and then nodded, as if to say that it was an accurate statement.

"That is good to hear, mate." Locke suddenly and impulsively moved closer, to place his hands on Johnny's shoulders. "You know I look up to you, right, mate? And not just because you are taller than I am. You're a shining bloody example to me, of how a relationship should be. If-if you and Sianna could not work things out, well, what chance would I have? So-so you have to succeed. Not just for your sakes, but for mine too. And for everyone else who is counting on you. Savvy?" Suddenly realizing how close he had gotten to the silversmith, Locke removed his hands and took a few steps back, glancing off to the side with embarassment. "Sorry, mate."

Emerald eyes just blinked in surprise for a moment. The outburst was entirely unexpected, and it took several breaths before Johnny could sort out his confused reactions. He dealt with them as with almost everything else ? a grin spread before he shook his head. ?Nothin? ta apologize fer, bu? bro ? tha?s a heavy loa? ta lay on a man. Yer lucky tha? my Si?s as stubborn abou? holdin? ou? fer us as I am. Bu? ya know Katie?s righ? up there in th? ranks a? mule-headedness, an? she wouldn? give up on ya, even if?n ya tried ta give up on her. So I?d say yer chances look pretty shiny no matter wha? happens with Si an? me.?

He took a deep breath to regain his composure, hands resting on the countertop for a moment before he pushed off and pivoted to face Johnny once again. If he had processed any of what Johnny had just said, it wasn't immediately clear, because he jumped straight into something else. "If I understand correctly, Sianna and you had a rather quick courtship, did you not? How did you know you weren't moving too fast?"

The abrupt changes in topic were enough to make a person?s head spin. But Johnny had no hesitation about answering this question, either. ?Din? know, no? fer sure, since I ain? go? any skill a? seein? th? future. Bu? yer righ? tha? we moved on fas?. All I can say abou? tha? is she?? Johnny broke off, and that faint smile Locke had sported earlier showed on his face. ?She fi? with me. Ya know tha? I proposed ta her middle?a tha? zombie attack coupl?a years ago? Ya know wha? made up m?min?? We were in th? kitchen in th? Inn, zombie go? in through th? window when I wasn? lookin? ? Sianna killed it. Stood there with her mace all dripping gore an? then calm as ya please she asked how much longer I was goin? ta be makin? th? sandwiches.?

Johnny?s smile deepened at the memory. ?I remember thinkin? tha? if she could do tha? she could pu? up with abou? anythin?, even me ? an? I asked her.? He shrugged one shoulder. ?Li?l thin?s addin? up ta where everythin? jus? fell inta place, ya know??

"I didn't return from Uni until a month or so after that." It was almost muttered, as an aside, before he cleared his throat and talked louder. "I think I understand, though. Though I would say that is the least romantic proposal that I have ever heard." His lips curled up into a teasing grin at that.

At that remark, Johnny just laughed. ?Ya know, yer no? th? firs? person ta say tha?. Bu? it di? th? job an? she said yes, an? tha?s wha? matters.? Emerald eyes were filled with laughter still as he looked at Locke, but the question was more serious. ?Ya afrai? thin?s are goin? too fas? with Katie? Or afrai? cause i? don? feel too fas? a? all??

"Johnny, if I were to unpack all my thoughts on this, we wouldn't have any more space left in this room." He laughed, but his eyes still carried a serious look in them. "You are talking to somebody who had to ask you if he was in love with a bird or not. I'm...gonna need a moment or two to gather my thoughts. And I may still spill them willy-nilly, as they come to me."

?Lo?s a room in here, bro ? ? That was said with an expansive gesture at the open shop floor. ?Take yer time an? spill away.?

That was Locke's cue to take a deep breath. "This is all...uncharted waters for me, and it's exciting and it's petrifying all at the same time. Sometimes it feels like I am fumbling around in the dark for the light switch that will illuminate things, make me see what I need to see to make it all work right this time. Because it feels like there is more at stake this time, savvy? If I louse this up, if I move too fast or too slow, if I say the wrong thing or make the wrong move, or say nothing or do nothing, I won't just lose her. I'll lose you, and Sianna, and all the rest of our mutual friends. When I broke up with 'Lanta - I didn't just lose her. I lost my friendship with Chase, and my relationships with all the people who were close to her withered and died." His eyes were pleading now, as he clasped his hands together. "I can't take that again, Johnny. I just can't."

Blonde eyebrows lifted at the outpouring of words, before they drew together. ?Well, goin? ta take tha? backwards on ya. Tell ya now tha? even if Katie manages ta lose her grip on ya ? which I don? think?s goin? ta happen so easy as ya think ? tha? don? have a thin? ta do with how thin?s are b?tween ya an? me or ya an? Si. If?n ya remember, we kinda ha? ya firs?.? Johnny?s grin was wide, and his tone was semi-teasing, but the words were sincere. ?Tell ya wha? else ? Katie?s no? so thin-skinned as ya seem ta think. Grew up with me an? Cal, din? she? Abou? th? only way I can think?a ya migh? flummox thin?s up with her is if?n ya started runnin? aroun? with other girls or somethin? ? an? tha? ain? ya, bro, I know tha?.?

After a pause, Johnny?s words came more slowly. ?Ya wan? a ligh? switch, a map ta makin? sure thin?s are perfec?? Tell ya now tha? there ain? a perfec? relationship ou? there. If yer willin? ta talk ta each other, be hones?, an? say wha? yer feelin? instead?a hidin? i? or thinkin? tha? th? other person should know wha? yer thinkin? ? well, tha?s solid, an? no? goin? ta break easy. Ya go? tha? with Katie??

He immediately nodded his head vigorously and responded. "I do. I love her, and I didn't have to have to ask you or anybody else to verify my feelings. I knew." Now he paused, to let his eyes soften a bit and to smile gently. "Thank you Johnny. Cormlle naa tanya tel'raa." Quickly realizing he'd lapsed back into elvish, he offered a translation. "Your heart is that of the lion, mate."

?Now yer goin? ta make me blush. Bro ? yer goo? fer Katie-kat, an? I?m gla? she?s go? ya.? It wasn?t as elegant a compliment as Locke?s, perhaps, but it was just about the highest praise Johnny could give. He grinned and with a thought, the temperature of his hands dropped to just above ice. A silver-meshed palm was offered to the ice elf along with his smile.

He took the offered hand, and even through the leather of his gloves, could feel the chill in Johnny's grasp. Locke pulled the silversmith into a quick, one-armed hug, before letting go. "Unfortunately, I must now take my leave of you. I hope you have a perfectly pleasant day, mate."

?Abou? time ta re-open th? doors anyway. Ya take care?a yerself, bro, an? have a goo? one.? With another grin, Johnny returned the one-armed hug before pushing away from his seat and crossed to the door and the ?Closed for Lunch? sign there.
