"Oh Lor' and Skies!" The sound of rapid steps going upstairs and down combined with slamming doors was enough to make Juli's teeth rattle. Shutting the door to her room firmly, she spun around and rested her tall frame against the solid wooden plank. Her closet was a disaster. Everything had been pulled out in some fashion or another and nothing had been found suitable. The sensible one had moth damage, the homely one was spattered in paint. Every garment lacking, Juliane shook her head. "An' jus' what am I goin' ta wear, yeah? M'paintin' digs?"

"Ya'd be awfully colorful, yeah?" Katarina chimed in just as she heard her cousin. All smiles and not bothering to hide her secretive look, she popped into her cousin's doorway, "Wha' 'n th' Lor'n Skies are ya doin', Jules?" Looks as the usually neat room was in complete disarray.

"Jus' not in th' way I'd intended, yeah? Ma made th' girls new frocks ta wear, but in the midst of everythin' goin' on, I completely forgot!" There had been a lot vying for her attention and energy as of late. "An' now that I've come by a ticket, jus' what am I goin' ta wear?" The question came out heavily mixed with a moan as she reviewed the mess.

"Nah any o' tha'." She waved her hand around the clothing that had clearly been rejected by her tossing. "'S a good thin' too. I already told Johnnay tha' ya nah goin' ta th' studio lata. We're playin' hookay ta fin' ya somethin' ta wear so ya dun embarrass meh. Or ya, I 'pose." She smiled sweetly, and motioned her head out of the room, "We'll go fin' ya somethin'."

"Ya told him what?" Being ushered out the door like a reluctant child, her head twisted back to regard her cousin with shock and awe. "Haven't I already told ya what I think 'bout playin' hookay? He needs me ta finish up th' work so tha' he can engrave th' plates!" Pausing at the top of the steps. "An' don't get any fancy ideas of deckin' me out in one of th' extra costumes, either!"

"I would neva!" She grinned, dragging Jules down the stairs by her wrist. "Dun worray 'bout it. I go' it all under control." Brave words from the dancer as she led out of the house, before releasing her hold on her cousin's wrist. "'N I promised Johnnay tha' ya'd nah show up. So now ya hav' no choice bu' ta go wit meh."

Juliane dragged her feet for a moment before stopping dead in her tracks. "As if either of ya could keep me out'a m'own studio. Ha!" Necessity, however, kept her in step with her cousin, longer strides making up the distance in a matter of moments. "I don't even want ta know what I'm gettin' m'self into by agreein' ta this."

She held a hand to her heart, "Now ya insult meh. Do ya nah wan' ta spend time wit meh? Ya kin go in ya paint-splattered clothes if ya'd like. Though Si's told meh where ta fin' th' nice dresses."

At that, the taller woman could only chuckle. "It's not tha' I don't want ta spend time wi' ya, twinkle toes. But ya do have th' reputation of landin' in trouble every now and again." An affectionate tap to her shoulder as they walked along. "But with ya in yer costume and Si in a fine dress, heaven forbid I not dress ta keep up wi' th' two of ya."

"I hav'a dress aftawards, too. M'friend Sera made it fer meh. It's really pretty." Her grin was wide as she successfully gotten Jules out of the house. It was only a matter of keeping her away from the shop now. " 'n th' costumes are horrible." She laughed lightly, "But tha's all taken care of. Wha' color do ya wan', or do ya nah know yet?"

Juliane shrugged lightly. "How should I know? I can count on one finger th' number of times I've needed somethin' fancy ta wear. But nothin' yellow." Sudden flashbacks took her back to the springtime that Marian had dressed all her girls in matching white and yellow pinnafores. "That's nice of yer friend ta make ya somethin'. What color's yours?"

Katie blinked for a moment at Juli's protest to yellow, and upon remembering, she laughed bright, "Oh, Lor'n Skies, I 'member ya 'n yer sista's in yellow." Excitement building with each closer step to the inner part of town, she smiled, "It's a brigh' blue, wit nice beadin' an' it flows real nice. I'll show ya afta we fin' ya a dress."

"Oh heavenly days, that's somethin' I'm more'n ready ta forget, myself. I looked a sour lemon." Another chuckle escaped her. "Hmmm, Katarina Smith wearin' a bright color." A teasing grin slowly grew. "Why tha's th' most shockin' news I've heard this week!" Which was saying a lot, for she'd had several doozies.

She rolled her eyes and laughed, hands sliding into her pockets of her black and red skirt, "It was nah mah choice, mind ya. If it were mah choice, I'd wear th' dullest grey ya'd eva did see."

Nearly stumbling on a cobblestone, she managed to avoid calamity and regain her footing, never losing a step. "Grey? What'd ever make ya choose somethin' like that, yeah? I'd a thought ya would choose a coral or somethin' like what yer friend made ya."

She reached out to steady her cousin and save her any public embarrassment. She could tease her till she was blue in the face, but she could not let her splatter on the cobblestone, "It was a joke, Jules." She laughed merrily, "Grey be more yer color than mine. No' tha' I kin't pull it off jist as good as ya kin."

"Mine? Ya think I'd look good in th' color of dishwater, do ya? Or th' glass I use ta rinse out m'paints from th' brushes?" She shook her head incredulously. "Nah, I can't see it, but I'll take yer word for it, Katie."

"Ya kin pull off any color, I'm thinkin'. An' mah words th' bes' an' mos' honest 'round." The first part might not be true, but the second was more than likely, "So, Si said ta go ta th' Heavenly Boutique. Ya know o' it?"

She thought a moment and shook her head. "I heard Si mention it before, but that's all. Not like I had much of a reason ta go shoppin' since we got here. Please tell me ya know where it is at least, twinkles."

"Yeah, Si said it was off of...." Her trailed off as she looked around them, "...hrm..."

"Benson somethin'" She said after a beat.

"Ya didn't think ta ask her for directions ta this Benson somethin' or other, did ya?

"I was mahbe hopin'... ya'd know? 'Sides, Si's was busy wit a lesson, though it dun sound like it was goin' too well. Oh, wai'... she said somethin' 'bout New Haven or anotha."

"Oh heavenly days!" As they came across the next intersection, Juliane turned west and in the direction of the Red Dragon Inn. "Do ya know how far a walk that is, twinkles? We have'ta go ta the Inn and then head north ta New Haven." She shook her head. "By th' time we get there I'll be so weary ya'll have ta lay th' dress over me whilst I'm layin' down ta see how it looks."

"We kin go git somethin' ta drink at th' Inn 'n rest if ya need ta rest." She did not seemed phased by the walk, her body well prepared, "But I'm glad ya 'least know where it is."

"I can handle th' walk, I jus' hope they don't mind a flushed farmer's daughter wantin' ta try on their dresses." A sideways glance. "Did Si say jus' how fancy this place is?"

"Now, whay would I ask tha' question? If yer thinkin' o' buyin' their dresses, they'll let ya in. 'Sides, yer nah ugly or anythin'." Katarina grinned at her reverse compliment.

"Oh such a lovin' cousin I have. No wonder yer halo's all bent an' such." An impish appearance of tongue and a quick wink as the Smith women continued along the bustling street.

Katarina had helped Juliane find a few dresses to begin to try on, before browsing the shop for herself. There were many occasions when Katie would find something for herself, and then remember that they were looking for Juliane. Finding a slinky red that that had the possibility of flattering the taller Smith, she made her way to where Juli was changing, "Well, lemme see wha' ya go' so far. An' I found 'nother one."

"If ya think I'm comin' one step out on this tiny room in this thing, yer ballet shoes are on too tight." Juliane peered at herself in the full length mirror. Teal might look pretty on a canvas, but on her six foot frame it gave her the impression of being covered in mold. Shimmery satiny mold, but mold nonetheless. A turn to the right and then the left. "B'sides, it makes m'rear look big... " Instantly regretting her confession. "... and I don't need any more jokes 'bout it from ya either."

She did not make any jokes, but she laughed at the confession, "Pahaps ya should come prac'ice wit me some times, Jules." Since her cousin was going to come out, Katie hauled the skimpy red dress over the door to hand it over. "Try this one on."

"Mmm and perhaps I should try paintin' wi' my feet and not my hands." Her own laughter reverberated off the walls of the dressing room. While not as inherently talented as her cousin, Juliane managed to comport herself with a fair level of grace. It was more than enough to keep her from being nothing but thumbs and left feet. And honestly, as the teal monster was exchanged for the red number, one could not say that there was something amiss in her figure. She was neither an amazon or a scarecrow, just a healthy average. "Oh Lor' an' Skies... do ya think Ma will let me out th' house wi' a dress plunged ta m'navel?!"

Katarina already knew that her cousin would never, never wear that dress. And neither would see. "Ya'd need ta wear a jacke' anyways, or ya'll jist freeze on Jolyon's arm." That had her pausing, and since her cousin could not see her face, she let it become expressionless for the moment. She did not know what to think about that. The moment was short, and Katarina mustered up a sigh. "If ya dun like it, I guess I kin fin' 'nother one."

The door swung open and her face popped around it. Blonde brows lifted in a quick gesture. "Ya think it hopeless too? Is dress shoppin' supposed ta be this hard?"

"Sometimes it is, an' sometimes it ain't." She tried to peer inside to see what current dress she had put on, "We'll fin' ya one."

Unable to pretend that she didn't notice, she let the door swing slightly wider. The red dress gave her a less than flattering appearance. One that Johnny would protectively label as a "lady of the night" and unsuitable for his twin. "Mmm, well at least we know it ain't this one, yeah?" A wry smile tweaked her lips upward.

Katie studied the dress, doing her best to contain her grin, "Yeah, it ain't the one. Nice color on ya, though. I saw a nice green one, mahbe a gray one too. 'Sides, if ya wore tha', I'm nah thinkin' tha' Jolyon will be watchin' me." She laughed lightly before going back to her search.

Stifling her own giggle, she called out after her. "Yeah right, Katie. He was goin' ta see ya long b'fore he agreed ta let me have his extra ticket."

"Tha's nah wha' I mean'." She grumbled, but she continued to look through the different dresses. Despite all the usual bantering, she was glad to spend some alone time with Juliane. She grabbed a dark green dress with a simple cut with beads along the bodice. She went back to the gray dress she had seen earlier, and stood in front of it. It shimmered in silver tones, and the cut was sweet. She played with the bottom of it, and watched how the dress gathered and swayed. Taking those two back to Juli's room, she tossed them over the door, "Try these."

"Then yer makin' less sense than ya usually do, twinkle toes." Squirming her way out of the red one, she randomly selected the gray one, the zipper making a soft "zzzzh" as it slid up her back. With her back to the mirror, she took the time to hang the red one up properly and add it to the pile of others she'd decided against. "So are ya plannin' on tellin' me what ya mean or do I jus' have ta guess?"

"Nah, I'll let it botha ya 'til ya figure it ou' or ya forget." She rolled her shoulders, and changed the subject, "Which ya did ya try on? Lemme see."

"Cruel an' unusual punishment." The door swung wide, Juliane facing her cousin. The cheeky grin a good indication that she'd missed the point and had already begun to forget that Katie had been implying anything. With all their discussion, she hadn't even thought to look in the mirror first. "Well, what do ya think?" Arms held out from her body, the skirt just skimming the floor.

Her lips pursued in thought as she studied her cousin. Eyes went down, then up, and she twirled a finger to indicate that she wanted Juli to turn around slowly. "Hmmm, tha's real pretty Jules. It'll look good 'n th' candleligh' I like it." She smiled, and motioned for Juli to look through the mirror.

Spinning as instructed, the skirt flared slightly around her ankles. Coming face-to-face with herself in the mirror, she could only grin. Making eye contact with her cousin through the window she nodded slowly. "Mmmm, seems we have a winner, yeah? Now let's go pay for it before th' number on th' tag talks me out of splurgin' on it."
