With the brisk chill of the early noon, Katarina came to the Silver Lark bundled in a jacket, accompanied by a scarf and leg warmers that peeked below her dress. Knowing that there were things to be done today, she had left Patches at home, despite his insistence. Walking to the front door, she gave it a friendly knock.

Using both hands to help herself up from the chair in the parlor, Sianna took a moment to gather her balance. She was dressed in a multitude of layers and a pair of soft doeskin boots. Skirts were now the easiest for her to maneuver in her advancing pregnancy. "Coming!" Pulling the door wide, she grinned at the exuberant person of her cousin-in-law. "Katie dear, sae glad tae see ye."

" 's always nice ta see ya, Si." She came in and gave Sianna the best hug that she could manage. "How ya feelin'?" Katie took on Johnny's request very seriously. Beside the fact that she had fully accepted Sianna into the family for some time, the added responsibility was not taken lightly.

"Feeling better today, actually. Th' babes are being verra good as of late. Though I'm glad once they're in my arms and no' danging on my spleen, aye?" Sianna returned the hug and moved to gather her gloves and scarf. A large basket waited by the door for her market purchases. "Sae ye sure ye dinna mind using yer only free time tae accompany a broadside like myself?"

"O' course nah. Family's firs', an' nah ta mention tha' I kinda like ya, yanno?" GIving a brilliant grin, she noticed the basket and picked it up herself. "An', o' all th' places mah company's been goin' lately, i's nice ta hav' a female companion." She stepped out of the doorway so Sianna could shut it. "An' jist wha' ar' we gittin' today?"

"Weeel, that's verra glad tae hear because I'm rather partial tae ye, myself." Tugging the door closed with a firm click of the lock, the key dropped into her sporran. Grinning to the younger woman, she linked arms with her as Henderson pulled the carriage to in front of the gate. "Ye would no' be complaining about th' masculine company ye have been keeping of late, hmmm?" The curve of her lips deepened as she avoided the mundane shopping list in lieu of the juicer tidbits of girl talk.

The cheerful demeanor remained at the question, and she gave her cousin a sidelong glance, "Nah a bit." She left her answer just like that for now, knowing that it didn't diminish Sianna's curiosity at all. She waited until Henderson helped them both into the carriage before continuing. "I dun hav' much ta complain 'bout when 'm goin' ta visit. Poor sap's has'ta see mah face more often wit' everyon' bein' gone an' all." It was said with a curl of her lips.

"And I've caught nae wind of him being unhappy wi' that arrangement either. Seems tickled pink if ye ask me. Which is saying a lot, considering, aye?" Sianna settled back into the cushion of the seat as the curricle rolled off towards its destination. Chuckling softly, she shook her head sagely. "In fact, I seem tae think the pair of ye are quite besotted."

She couldn't help but laugh at the color reference, shaking her head slowly in sync with Sianna. To buy her time, she gazed out a window as they moved along. "I dunno Si. I's been 'long time since 've been 'bespotted' 'n th' way yer meanin'. It ain' been brough' up, yanno. Dunno if I wan' it ta eitha." She chewed on her bottom lip for a moment before grinning, "Jo gave me some advice an' 'm tryin' ta follow it, only yer takin' me 'n th' otha direction."

At the mention of her husband, Sianna's eyes sparkled and darkened almost instantaneously. She had been doing her best to adjust to his absence. Shrugging her shoulders, her hand patted Katie's knee gently. "Weel, I'll no' add my two cents beyond this, aye? Sometimes such things have a way of finding ye whether ye wish it or no'." As if to accentuate her point, Sianna rubbed her hand across the upper curve of her belly.

She chuckled slightly, but gave a slow nod of acceptance. "Yeah, I know. An' I dun min' yer two cents. Er ten cents." Another soft grin, before her eyes traveled down her her rubbing hand, "They movin' 'lot 'n there?" She reached a hand out to touch Sianna's protruding abdomen just it case.

Before Sianna could even nod, a quick tap-tap rumbled beneath Katie's fingertips as if on cue. "Aye, can't ye tell?" A giggle then, as a longer pattern of kicks rippled. "I canna tell if they jus' refuse tae sleep or if they keep different schedules, aye? Which neither option is verra pleasant tae think about. Sleep is a commodity with one bairn, but wi' two?" Sianna sighed theatrically. "If they keep it up once they are born, Johnny and I will no' be able tae do much beyond taking different shifts."

"Mahbe they take turns sleepin', so one's always 'wake an' let's ya know it." Her eyes brightened at the sensation of life underneath her fingers. It was still fascinating every time she rested her hand against her cousin's stomach. "Mahbe they'll fall inta th' same patterns, though? Bein' twins an' all. Eitha way, ya an' Johnny'll be jist fine. I know it." A bright smile before she placed her hand back in her lap.

She nodded slowly. "Aye, I ken th' same thing. Will be an adjustment, but we'll handle it." A faint grimace as one of the kicks was a bit uncomfortable, but it passed quickly. "Sae will there be anything ye wish tae get while we're tae market?" Traffic was picking up as they approached the blocks of shops and vendor stalls, and the carriage had paused before making its way through an intersection.

Katarina patted Sianna's knee with an affection smile at the shared confidence. She gave a small shrug, "I dunno, I kin always think o' thin's I wan' bu' nah need." A light chuckle, "Bu' mahbe I kin go wit' a pair o' gloves er somethin' fer mah hands." She held them up and wiggled them for effect, "Th' only thin' 'm missin' 'n mah winter garb."

Another giggle bubbled forth as Henderson guided the carriage to the curb. "Aye, gloves are verra practical and needed for th' winter tae be sure, but since when has a Smith been concerned wi' jus' necessities. Naught wrong wi' getting things ye want for nae other reason than ye want it." Henderson put out the step and swung open the door.

She rolled her eyes at Sianna and laughed, "Clearly, ya've never seen mah wardrobe. I go' lot'sa o' thin's I dun need. An' if I see 'notha on' o' those thin's, I jist migh' git it." Her laughter died on a chuckle, letting Henderson help Sianna out first before following suit and taking the basket with her, "So, wha's 'n th' agenda firs'?"

Sianna thanked Henderson and gave him instruction as to when and where to return to them with a smile. Turning back to Katie's question, she canted her head to one side and started making a a verbal list. "Th' green grocer, I think. Need some apples and vegetables tae make some soup. It lasts me quite a time and keeps me from having tae spend tae much time on my feet."

Her eyes narrowed slightly on the comment of staying off of her feet. She would try to find out Sinna's list for next time so that she could do it herself. "Well, let's git goin' then." Katarina kept her pace easy for Sianna, and helped gathered all the grocery items to save time. Next they went to a shop all for babies, gathering necessities and observing the clothing. The tiny shoes brought a slight smile before finishing the purchases. With the basket full, Katarina carried it with ease as they passed a stall full of winter attire. "Oh look Si, this wold look real good 'n yeah." She pulled out a turquoise shawl out and up for examination.

Sianna smiled as Katarina held it out with a theatrical flourish. "Do ye think?" Her hand reached out to feel the soft knit. She was actually feeling quite fine, the company and errands heightening the healthy flush to her cheeks. "Would be verra cozy tae wear, I think, though th' color seems a bit flashy for me tae wear about th' house, aye?"

"O' course nah!." She almost seemed offended by the idea, "Every time ya will see it, it'll bring a smile ta yer face. No such thin' as bein' too brigh' 'n th' house." This coming from someone who is currently wearing bright pink in her hair, probably meant little. She eyed the gloves on display, but was first set on convincing Sianna to buy something for herself.

It really was a beautiful color, vibrant compared to Sianna's normal choices of earthy tones and grays. Reaching for the hanger, she held it in front of herself and checked her reflection in the mirror. "It really is verra lovely and sae soft." Preening a bit, she blushed when she caught herself and turned back to Katie. "I'll think it ower while ye pick out yer gloves." Draping the shawl over her arm, Sianna began examining pairs of long knit socks.

Smiling brightly, Katarina did not miss the glance to the socks, "Kin't hav' too many warm socks, yeah?" Pleased that Sianna was considering things for herself, Katie's attention turned towards the gloves. She instantly decided she needed leather ones and knitted ones. The knitted ones were easy, finding a pair with a multitude of colors to match her everyday dresses. Debating between the leather ones, another pair caught her eyes. "Look a' these, Si." She slipped on the black, fingerless gloves, "I ain't seen this kin' bafore."

"Nae, ye canna. 'Specially when ye are suddenly devoid of a furnace of a husband who keeps yer bed toasty warm and always lets ye put yer feet on his." Sianna grinned over to to Katarina, adding three pairs to the crook of her arm. Eyebrows raised at the fingerless gloves. "Aye, canna say that I have either. Would think it tae defeat th' purpose, aye? Hard tae keep yer hands warm if yer fingertips are blue wi' cold."

"Yeah, bu' look a' 'em." She was trying to justify the buy, and it didn't seem like she needed much convincing. "I like th' way they look." Determined now, she gathered the fingerless gloves along with her multicolored ones, and a soft pair of sheepskin gloves. "Okay, 'm gonna git these an' wha' she's go'." She pointed to Sianna's small handful, and promptly paid for all of the items. "Here, add 'em 'n." She held up the basket.

The transaction already completed, Sianna was left with her mouth agape. Seeing there was no sense in protesting payment with the vendor, she turned to her cousin instead. "I dinna believe ye are supposed tae purchase everything I look at, aye?" She obeyed dutifully though, and placed the goods into a corner of the basket still not quite full. "Ye should understand that I'll get ye back, one way or t'other." Spying a corner cafe across the way, she pointed out the alluring sign boasting the city's best scones. "In fact, I'll start right now." Sianna grinned and linked arms once more with the girl. "Now ye'd no' argue wi' a pregnant woman, would ye?"

Satisfied with Sianna's expression, she tucked her tongue in her cheek. "I dun hav'ta buy everythin' ya look a', bu' I like buyin' people pretty thin's, yanno? Think o' it as me spoilin' mah future cousins by startin' 'n their Ma." Grinning from ear to ear, she barely looked over at the cafe before her arm was linked and they were heading for it's direction, "Ah nah, I'd neva dream o' arguin' wit' ya, pregnan' er nah!" Light laughter followed her in their leave.

The wiles and whims of pregnancy were nothing easily decoded. Which explained, how in no time at all, Katarina was left to watch Sianna tuck into a second cinnamon scone replete with apricot jam and a pink grapefruit smoothie. A happy sigh escaped her as she took another sip of the frothy nectar, wiping at her lips with a napkin. "Sae... " Blue eyes twinkled as the younger woman was appraised. "... what is the latest wi' ye, aye?"

Katarina used every will of training to not look at the food combination with disdain. With her own smoothie of mixed berries still half empty, it was easy to shrug and keep a grin, "Th' latest? 'm finished wit' La Bayadere bah th' end o' th' week. Kinda glad 'bout it. Nah tha' I didn' like it an' all, bu' wit' workin' 'n Th' Nutcracker too, jist came ou' ta be too much, yanno?"

Swallowing the latest mouthful, Sianna nodded. "Aye, I canna even begin tae imagine it. 'Tis one thing tae remember th' lyrics tae different songs, but full ballets? 'Tis a wonder tae me." A dark eyebrow arched slightly, yet in friendly inquiry. "But ye mean tae tell me yer living in th' throes of yer dance and naught more?"

"Dun feel like I got time fer more." A quick grin and chuckle, "Th' free time I go' is spen' wit' ya er visitin' Locke. He's tryin' ta teach me coupl'a elven phrases fer this bet we hav'." Another chuckle with a shake of her head.

"Dinna feel ye have time fer more? Locke's keeping ye that busy, aye?" She clucked her tongue in a motherly sort of manner, the twinkle in her eye belying the jest. "Weel, d'ye think ye'll be able tae gie him a run for his money wi' th' phrases?" Sianna leaned in conspiratorially. "And are ye sure he's no' teaching ye tae say something wickedly naughty?"

"Th' only way I gotta clue is tha' I ask one o' th' choreographers tha's a' elf." She wiggled her brows at thinking she was rather witty, "Fact, 'm hopin' ta learn a li'l bit more fra her ta kinda make it a surprise, yanno? An' nah, I really am jist real busy wit' th' theatre an' all." A grin with another drink of her smoothie.

Her eyes narrowed slightly as she returned to her regular posture in the chair. "Mmmm, and is th' bet for a phrase ye could no' repeat tae a pregnant lady wi' no' shocking her sensibilities?"

She laughed fully now, "Nah, i's nothin' like tha'. Gotta say a complimen' ta him an' tha's tha'. Jist a simple phrase, bu' yanno me. I wanna say mor' than he'd 'pected an', yanno..." she glanced out the window for a moment, "mean it." With a sigh, she looked back to Sianna, "Nah too sure jist wha' 'm gonna say. Neva been real good wit' words er anythin'."

A kind smile met the sigh in mid-release as the mother-to-be reached out to pat the younger woman's hand kindly. "Weel, if ye need a wee bit of help putting what ye wish tae say into words, I'll be glad tae oblige." Sianna pushed the plate to the side as a waiter passed by so that he would retrieve it and took another sip of her smoothie.

Katarina pursud her lips in thought of the offer. Despite the teasing, any assistance would be appreciated, "Yanno, I jist migh' call ya up 'n tha'. I jist.. I dunno." She offered a rueful smile, "I dun wan'ta say somethin' tha' makes it all.. wierd."

"Aye, there's a risk tae that. But th' possibility of reward as well. 'Tis a verra fine balance point. Ye'll ken it when ye are meant tae." Smiling softly, Sianna folded her hands over her belly. "That's th' way it was for me, at least."

Katarina exhaled air up through her lips and moved some of her hair. "Yeah, I know. An' mahbe 'm jist seein' somethin' tha' ain't there." Another shrug, trying to ease the idea from her thoughts, "Anyway, mahbe when I come by tomorra ya kin help me put some words togetha."

"Whatever ye wish, Katie lass." Another gentle smile curved her lips, but the Scot held her tongue on the depths of her thoughts. Letting her gaze wander to the window, she watched the clusters of people wander betwen the stalls.

"Hmmm." It was an absent response as her own thoughts wandered just to how this topic kept reappearing. Finding a smile to easily resurface, she glanced at Sianna's smoothie, "Ya ready ta go?" Her smile turned impish, "Er mahbe should I ask fer another scone fer th' trip home?"

"Mmmmm no' necessary, though ye are verra sweet tae offer, cousin. I shall bide until we make it home. I am eating for three, ye ken." A wink then as she stood slowly and stretched. Leaving a tip on their table, she layered her wraps back on. "Are ye tired of shopping or shall we see what more th' market holds before Henderson comes tae whisk us away, hmmm?"

A light chuckle, she also replaced her winter clothing and picked up their full basket. "I dun min' stayin' ou' a bi' more, bu' I dun wan'cha ta push it. How're ya feelin'?" She studied her cousin just to make sure whatever answer was given lined up with what her eyes saw.

"Feeling fine, I promise." Sianna nodded solemnly before winking over her shoulder as she stepped out onto the sidewalk. However she took a moment to pause, giving a look both left and right. "Is there any place ye wish tae head next?"

The promise confirmed the healthy glow and smile. With high spirits, Katarina pondered the options, "Nah 'n particular. 'm thinkin' 'bout spoilin' Patches an' gittin' him a toy fer being good 'bout comin' ta yer place all th' time. Wha'cha think?"

"Sounds fine tae me. No' verra nice of us tae treat ourselves and th' bairns yet leave Patches out." Giggling lightly, she smiled at a new mother pushing a pram. "I'll even get him a bit o' catnip tae boot."

She laughed and rolled her eyes, heading right where she knew at least one vendor to suit her needs, "Ya kin giv' 'im tha' a' yer house, yeah? He's good company, though. Smartes' li'l thin' 've eva seen. If ya eva need practic' bafore havin' th' kids, I kin leave Patches there fer ya." She wiggled her brows and grinned at the tease.

"I dinna need a cat tae practice on. Had a whole farm of animals tae look after as well as several pets of my own when I was a wee lass. Even used tae dress the pups in doll's clothes." Winking coyly at the confession. "'Tis th' only option when ye have seven older brothers." They meandered easily through the streams of other shoppers, working their way towards the vendor's shop.

Katarina had to stop and stare at her cousin at the confession, "Mah ma woulda killed me if I dressed up th' animals. Oh, look!" Enthusiasm had Katarina linking her arm with Sianna's as she turned them to a large stall. "It gits me every time." She led them to a stall that was full of animals that were abandoned or without a home and open for adoption.

Ushered into the stall, it took a moment for all of it to sink in. Every sort of animal imaginable was there to choose from, but motion at the end of the end caught her attention. Only two dogs remained for the day. A study in opposites in both size and temperment as the small terrier jumped eagerly, while the larger mountain dog sat primly, watching the world with dark liquid eyes.

"Is tha'..? They even go' pigs, Si." Katarina glanced down at the pink piglets, before a sharp yap caught her attention. "Let's go say hi." Nearly dragging Sianna down to the end to the dogs, Katarina leaned over to pet the small terrier, "Yer jist a li'l fiesty thin', aren't cha?"

Bending being a bit awkward, Sianna squatted slightly, the larger dog moving quickly to come to the side of the pen. "Ciamar a tha thu madadh?" She spoke softly and the dog seemed to whine pleadingly in response.

Katarina kept a careful eye on Sianna, but the words peaked her interest, "Wha' did ya jist say? Hey!" She giggled as the little dog started to lick her fingers while her attention was temporarily diverted.

"All I did was ask how she was, aye?" The mountain dog leaned against the side of the pen as if eager to get closer to Sianna. Gripping her hands against the railing to steady herself, she slipped one hand between the bars and began to lightly rub the dog's head. It almost seemed to purr with contentedness. Glancing up to Katarina, Sianna gave a tender smile. "She's verra sweet, do ye no' think?"

Watching with interest, she kept her eyes on the larger dog while entertaining the smaller one with her hands. The occasional lick in between her fingers brought giggles that could not be controlled. "Yeah, bu' I like this one too. Havin' some energy's always good." Stretching over, one hand left the terrier to pet the other dog also.

Nodding again, Sianna extended her right hand to greet the terrier as well. Before too long, an older man with a gentle face came over to approach them. "G'day ta ya, ladies. In th' market fer companions, are ya?"

Katarina pursued her lips at the older man's approach, before sneaking a glance over to Sianna. "We jist migh' be." Performance in play, she donned a sweet smile and gestured to the dog Sianna was petting, "We're a li'l interested 'n tha' one ova there."

Eyes widened a bit at that last comment. Her smile turned wistful. If Katarina was interested in the dog, Sianna wouldn't be one to interfere. A good home for the animals was far more important than who's home. Sianna whispered quietly in Gaelic, "Ye are a verra pretty lass. Ye'll have a grand home verra soon I think."

A ghost smile played on her lips as Sianna whispered unknown words to the dog again. "So," she faced the man and tossed her hair over her shoulder, "Wha' kinda deal will ya give me fer her?"

Not wanting to be left out, the little terrier crowded against the bars in an effort to get to Sianna. Chuckling lightly, she set about entertaining the pair while Katarina cajoled the man. "Oh, ye wee sweetie, ye are verra sweet too now. Verra sweet th' pair of ye."

"If you take the mountain dog, then you must take the terrier too. Can't bring myself to part the pair, miss."

Katarina shifted her weight to one side as she looked back to Sianna and the dogs again. She leaned closer to the man for a private question, "Do yanno if their good wit' kids?"

The man nodded eagerly, "Always good with the little ones that come by."

The dancer reached into her pocket to produce coins, "I'll take 'em. An' any rope 'er somethin' ta take 'em home." Priced decided, the man took off with the coins to find rope. "Yer nah allergic ta dogs er anythin', ar' ya Si?"

Startled out of her reverie, the image of her father walking with a small herd of rather large dogs around his legs striding through the yard melting away, she shook her head. "Nae, no' tha' I have ever been aware. Have ye decided tae take one then? I think I can manage tae ride wi' yer new dog on th' way home.." Smiling warmly, Sianna stood slowly back to her full height.

Katarina offered her hand just in case Sianna needed it for balance, "Yeah, gittin' both o' 'em, actually, since th' man said they kin't be sep'rated an' all. An' nah, they ain't mine, jist makin' sure ya ain' gonna complain when they wan'ta snuggle up wit' ya durin' th' nigh'. They're fer you." Finding nothing wrong with large, implusive purchases, she grinned.

"They're fer wha'?" Under the term 'agog' in the dictionary would have appeared Sianna's expression. "Ye took th' pair of them fer me?" Shock and disbelief played across her face before she let another tender glance sneak back to the pair of canines. They were pacing in the pen, as if sensing that something good had happened.

"O' course I did. "Sides, mah li'l cousins need some playmates otha' than eachotha'." She couldn't help but chuckle at Sianna's expression before the owner came to gently tie a rope around each of them before handing the rope over to Katarina and letting the dogs out through the gate. "Thanks 'gain." A brilliant smile to the man, she stood there for a moment so that the dogs could get use to both her and Sianna.

The pair explored the air with wet noses as if seeing the world in a whole new light outside of the pen. "Why do I have th' sudden feeling that if ye spoil me this much I dinna wish tae see what ye'll do fer th' bairns, aye?" Grinning broadly, she shook her head in a reproving tease. "Just wait tae Johnny see's what ye've done. I dinna think he'd like fighting for his wife's attention ower twa babes and twa dogs."

"Well, let's jist say 'm sure tha' Jo's done somethin' ta me fer deservin' ta figh' fer yer attention. An' dun tell me ya didn' wan'em. Yer eyes migh' as well be open books 'n tha' one. An', jist who else 'm I 'posed ta spoil? 've decided tha' yer gonna be mah outlet. Now, ready?" She offered the ropes, letting her choose if she wanted both, one, or neither to walk.

Taking a quick glance to the bulging basket, Sianna took the two ropes in exchange. Fair was only fair. "Remind me no' tae ever do anything tae make ye wish tae be even with me, aye?" Giggling lightly, she scanned the marketplace. "D'ye have more ye wish tae shop for?"

Basket exchanged, a permanent smile was on her face, "Yanno, I think 've cause 'nough damage fer one day, yeah? 'less ya wan'ed ta grab somethin's fer yer new friends bafore we leave. An' ya still gotta name 'em."

"Name them? 'Tis been hard enow tae think of what tae name th' bairns. But yer right, I dinna have anything tae th' house tae feed them. Mind if we stop tae th' butcher tae get some things?"

"Course nah. Mah time's yours. An', ya still go' some time ta think o' th' kids names, bu' I think th' dogs need names relatively soon." Surprised that her purchase had gone over so smoothly, Katarina felt an unexpected urge to giggle. There was no other place she would rather be than with her cousin and her new pets.
