Lucien had awakened as the sun still lit the RhyDin sky. His mate and his daughter were gone, and he sent out his thoughts, seeking their where-abouts. He found them on Twilight Isle, and from the feel of things, Sylviana was sleeping comfortably within the basket that Topaz used to carry her about. The child is small, but Lucien is uncertain if it is because of her fairy heritage, or if she too will suffer the wasting that most of the infants of his kind die from. Those are thoughts he does not wish to dwell upon, and yet, they consume him with concern.
He rose as soon as he could then, hurrying into RhyDin to feed. Gabriel had left moments before him, and then gone to be with the Marchioness. Gabriel had an aloofness about him that was as dark as their world. Lucien knew his brother was close. He would have to make certain that Gabriel no longer hunted the Vampyre. The temptation would be too great. Even feeding was becoming dangerous for him. And yet, no answers came to mind how to keep Gabriel from the ever growing compulsion to ?feel? again. That is the terrible truth for his kind. The older a Carpathian becomes, the stronger the lure of the kill becomes. Centuries without emotions make the lure of feeling just once a temptation that many cannot resist. To consume a life, take it all with the elixir of fear pumping adrenaline into the blood is a song that grows ever stronger for each unmated Carpathian male, and it is what forces them to take the step into the world of the Vampyre, or to walk into the sun. Lucien felt in Gabriel the terrible desire to feel again. He would have to keep closer ties with Gabriel. Try to share with him the joy of his daughter and mate. Give to his brother as much as he could.
Lucien drifted as a fog amongst the branches of a large tree in Battlefield Park. He waited for pair of joggers to appear on the path below that he had seen enter the park for a run. They were regulars here that were always free of drugs and not intoxicated, and that suited his mood tonight. They were talking as they came under the tree, and he lit upon the path behind them. Lulling them into the quiet submission before feeding from each, Lucien made certain that he would not take too much, nor cause them any pain. By hunting for pairs, he would not have to take so much that he would make either of them light headed, and before he left them, he walked along the pathway with them, and gave them a memory of having met an old friend, but a friend whose face they would never remember.
Twilight Isle became his next destination. He arrived to find his mate in a ring with Tasslehofl, and when the man reached out and touched Topaz, he could not stop the snarl that echoed across the sand. Every muscle in his body tensed as the man touched what Lucien would protect with his dying breath, and it went against every fiber of his being to remain where he was. He had picked up Sylviana before moving into the shadows at the tree line. He was not comfortable around other people, but his time protecting the Marchioness had taught him how to endure it.
As the match ended, Topaz hurried from the ring toward him and he slid an arm protectively around her before shooting a cold glare at Tasslehofl. Topaz?s voice was music to his soul as she told him she?d missed him. She picked up the empty basket and invited him to have a seat where they could watch some of the ?entertainment?. He was not certain he would classify dueling as entertainment, but if it pleased her, he could do no other than see to her happiness.
Sylviana was nestled against his shoulder, and he could sense her heartbeating against his own chest. It was a soft flutter of life, but the spark within was strong, and he checked upon her frequently. Topaz was at his other arm, and he slid that arm around her protectively. She had thought him a cave man for his need to protect her from any chance of harm, and yet even now, he could not stop himself from acting upon instinct.
She laid her hand against his thigh, ?Yes, this is already much better than it has been.?
Lucien glanced down at her face before kissing the crown of her head gently, ?you did miss me.? It was meant in jest, and yet it made his pulse leap to know that she felt for him the same way he felt about her.
She gave him a happy smile, ?of course, I miss you every time that you?re not close enough to touch.?
He lifted an ebon brow at her, ?hmm, so this is why you leave me to go fighting vampyres and such?? He was working hard to keep the smile from ruining the effect. She had been very good since the conception of their daughter, and even since her birth, Topaz had not gone off into danger. He wondered just how long she would remain content to stay out of the fray.
?To go fighting vampyres I want to come with you, not leave you.? She chuckled. She did not realize yet how his attention was divided when she was near, once side of him worried about protecting her, and the other side trying to focus on the always dangerous vampyre.
