Welcome Back

?Feels good t' b' back, don' it?? Seamus squeezed Catey's hand, turning to look at her as they approached the inn.

?That is does.? Catalina grinned. Many a time while they had been on her home world she had thought they?d be doomed to spend eternity on Dragon?s Eye and not in an enjoyable sort of way. ?It looked like we'd never manage that, at times.?

?Indeed it did.? Seamus agreed with a short chuckle which he followed with a wolfish grin as he gestured for her to move up the porch before him. ?Yet, 'ere we b'!?

?You do have some rather useful talents.? She stepped up onto the porch with a chuckle.

?I don' know jus' 'ow useful they were, but if ye say so.?Seamus shrugged modestly as he stomped up behind her. His eyes twinkled as he opened the door to the inn for her, nodding to Guido.

Catalina walked through the open door, nodded to Guide and then waited a moment. ?Well, you rescued the lemon bars from mold for one, and you didn't fall off any of our rides.? She gave Seamus a teasing wink. They both knew there was very good chance she may not have been able to return from this last mission had she gone by herself.

?I think we earned a few decent drinks.? Catalina chuckled and had a look around as they headed barward. As if Seamus?s question had been the cue the bar tender, a tall blond man, announced last call. The inn was fairly crowded. Someone dove for a hot pink box to resupply with ammunition even as he called for a medic. The next moment he aimed a spray can at a girl. A woman seated at a table refilled her glass from a bottle, while a demon look alike faked a wheezing cough appealing to a beautiful blond?s nursing urge, and another customer called for Irish cream.

?On'y a few, yer oughta know.? Seamus took Catalina?s hand into his again. His gaze picked through the patrons. ?Yer know, I don' believe I recognize a'yone 'ere...?

The young blond called to the staff for aid to the demon look-alike. One of the spray can combatants had run out of whatever that messy stuff in the cans was and now moved to hand to hand combat, a dark being with blood red eyes and a wicked smirk appeared on a stool, the woman at the bar paid for her drink, and the demon look-alike received first aid delivered with hugs.

?No, not a one.? Catalina?s gaze returned to Seamus. ?That surprises you??

?I s'ppose it shouldn'...?Seamus shrugged impishly before he leaned against the bar and raised his hand to get the bartender?s attention. ?O'er 'ere! A Guinness an' wha'ever th' lady wan's!? He motioned to Catey for clarification.

?A bottle.? Catalina ordered just like she would at home before she added, ?please.?

?Guiness an' th' lady's pleasure, comin' up!? The bartender, Johnny, had heard the order despite his being distracted by a terror struck customer. ?Darcy? Ya all righ', there??

"I hear you've been talking about things, Darcy. About us." Blood-eyes addressed the terror struck woman with a sadistic smirk while Seamus scrounged in his pockets for some coins.. There had to be some in there, didn't there?

?Bottle'a Guiness? Ain' no way ta serve th' stuff.? Johnny commented as he set a tall glass with just the minimal froth on top to set off the dark color on the bar. He paused with a curious look at Catalina while Seamus withdrew several silver and bronze coins with an 'aha!' They clattered nosily on the bartop in payment.

?Oh right, we're back in civilization, I'm sorry.? Catalina smiled to the bartender, a little emberrassed to have forgotten about the multitude of available spirits and brews here. ?Whiskey please and I guess a glass to go with it, too, please.?

?Bottle'a whiskey an' a glass fer th' civilized types.? Johnny laughed as he pulled down a bottle of whiskey and a clean glass, setting them both on the counter. ?There ya go - enjoy!?

?Many thanks.? Seamus said with a wolfish grin for the tender, though he winked at Catey. ?Ain' civilization nice, hon?? He scooped his drink up, the first sip of real lager was like ecstasy. He even let out one of those comical 'ahhhhhs' of pleasure. It was much better than the available drinks back in Dragon's Eye! It was good to be home.

?Thank you.? Catalina grinned to Johnny, then turned a wide smile to Seamus. ?And thank you, too.? She splashed some whiskey from the bottle into the glass. ?It's absolutely wonderful.? She brought up her glass. ?To civilization.? Then, not so refined, she drained the entire glass. ?Mmm, tastes better, too.?

The spray can combatants now wrestled on the floor, the demon look-alike was hugged or strangled by the beautiful blonde and the previously terror struck Darcy appeared to recover somewhat. Johnny took a last turn along the bar to collect coins and to drop them into the till before he pulled off the apron and tossed it into the hamper.

?All righ' folks, y'all are on yer own!? Johnny set up the self-serve sign. ?Have a g'nigh' an' don' burn down th' place too much!?

?Oi, nae need thankin' me. I a'ways pay, yer oughter know tha'.? Seamus leaned in to brush his lips against hers briefly after having raised his Guinness in toast.
?That you do. You do know I got paid as dearly as you for this trip, right?? Catalina?s smile for Seamus was warm and her voice soft with affection. She refilled her glass. ?It oughta be save to sit down somewhere.?

?Eh.? Seamus gave a dismissive wave of his hand as he followed her gaze. The silly string combat had come to its end. ?Tha's nae matter an' ye know it. A'right, anywheres ye want, doll.?

?Somehow when you say that it sounds complimentary. How about right here?? Catalina nodded to two empty stool right next to another before she grinned to Seamus again.

?Oi, ye thin; yer funny, don' ye?? Seamus barked in laughter, eyeing her before he plopped down on the stool. ?Well, saves us any more travel than we a'ready done.?

?Every step counts.? Catalina chuckled softly as she sat on the other stool. ?And I'm sure you'll find enough to do tomorrow to where you'll be glad for every step you didn't have to take tonight. Do you think you'll be scaring the animals by jogging everywhere now??

?I don' know, mebbe?? Seamus chuckled again. ?I still need ter go an' get Cailean... Poor pup, I 'ope 'e 'asn't forgotten us.? Now a frown pulled at his face.

?He did not forget you, he just grew bigger.? Catalina could not stand to see Seamus worried about adoration of Cailean.
[
?I don' know... Yer sure?? He eyed her again.

?Of course, and he'll be ecstatic that you came back to see him. You should be prepared for jumps and rolling around and lots of i'm-so-happy-to-see-you-licks and for I-got-to-check-if-you-re-okay-licks and for I-got-to-make-sure-you-feel-welcome-licks and probably another few series of licks.? She gave Seamus a tentative smile.

?Mebbe yer righ'.? He laughed again, and then drowned his laughter with a good swig of his beer.

?Aye, maybe.? This time Catalina just sipped from her glass. A few stools over a man with a twisted grin threatened a woman that foul play on her part would result in him killing her, no matter that they had been a pair only recently even as he caressed her cheek. Catalina almost missed Seamus?s suggestive wink, but just almost.

?So... ye know, I cannae wait ter try out th' bed again...? The look he gave her was all too innocent.

?Is that so?? Catalina winked back and missed the reply of the woman a few stools down to the man with the twisted grin. ?It'll be strange sleeping in a huge bed like that. Are you sure you wont be missing the hard rocky surfaces, the stars over head and all the ghoulish sounds or the narrow tree limbs rocking you to sleep?? Not that they had seen stars very often while they were on Dragon?s Eye or that seeing them at all had been a good thing. The hard, solid rock had been appreciated, though.

?Wha' stars?? Seamus guffawed. ?It were a'ways cloudy wit' no sign o' rain! Plus, ye know yer missed me bed, didn' ye?? He waggled his brows.

?No, well maybe just a wee bit. But I had the best part of the bed with me.? Catey winked to Seamus.

?I bet ye did.? Seamus laughed again and then finished off the remainder of his Guinness.

?Listening to you one could come to think you disagree.? Catalina teased andh id her telling grin with a sip from her glass. The blond girl whipped out a picknick basket with an axcited cry. Jack glanced over to Darcy and Blood-eyes left.

?I jus' know.? He emphasize the 'know', giving Catey a knowing look. Settling the tankard on the bar, he grinned at her. ?Can' say I will miss th' rocks. Or creepy crawlies.?

?You could set that glass down and go see why the lass is on the floor.? Catalina suggested to Jack He didn?t reply. Instead he went to offer Darcy his assistance.

?Creepy crawlies - I like that term. Sounds almost pleasant.? Catalina grinned to Seamus.

?Well, got ter make th' mos' outter life, yer know?? Seamus?s eyes crinkled as he grinned again. He adverted his eyes, however, to take a look around the inn. The silly string combatants were now nuzzeling, Jack was taking his leave of Darcy, the girls with the picnic basket talked of future parties, while a woman in high heels, mussed hair and polka dots entered and another ran out.

?I fully agree.? Catalina nodded nodded to the empty Guiness bottle. ?You should have ordered two or something? Then she grinned some more, and rather happy at that, at once reminded of the short stay oh so long ago at the royal ranch and the long ride there and back. ?So you were listening.?

?I a'ways should order two, I ne'er do.? Seamus shrugged. He turned a sheepish look to Catey, though he did also look offended. ?I a'ways listen!?

?With your ears you always listen...I meant something else.? Catalina smiled to Seamus, unexplicably happy.

?Hrm.? Seamus raised a brow, squinting at her curiously.

?Good evening, Jade.? Someone now standing with Darcy finally greeted the polka dots.

?I wasn't so sure what all made it from your ears to here and here until just a few seconds ago.? Catalina attempted an explanation as she lightly tapped his forehead and then his chest, smiling wide.

?Is tha' righ'?? Seamus wrapped his arms around her waist, feet tangling with her stool to pull it as close as possible.

?Mhm, that is right.? She got rid of her glass in favor of placing her hands on Seamus?s shoulders and looked deeply into his eyes. ?And I like it.?

?Well, I'm glad ye do, doll.? He grinned at her before he leaned in to brush his lips against hers again. This time she didn't let him escape so quickly as before. No, they were going to enjoy a leisurely kiss. Who was he to complain? He was lapping it up.

But this wasn't The Shack or any kind of inn like it. Eventually and reluctantly Catalina broke the kiss by leaning her head back a bit. She kept her hands where they were and gazed at Seamus.

?Mmm, good as a'ways.? Seamus remarked with a cheeky grin.

?Just good?? Catalina grinned back. ?You just wait until we get to your ranch and Cailean is done with you.?

?Well, wha' are we waitin' fer, then?? Hearty laughter accompanied Seamus?s question.

?Just for you to say it's time to go.? Catalina reached for her glass. It would be a waste to leave it behind still half full. When she had the glass emptied and returned to the counter her hands went in search of his.

?Jus' th' encouragmen' Ah needed.? Seamus squeezed her hands and gave her a wolfish look as they stood up. Their fare thee wells to those they had met this even were minimal but warm. Seamus winked to Catey once they made it to the door. ?Ye know, it is nice ter see th' stars out again.?

?Aye, stars are a nice sight. Perhaps we should do some stargazing again soon.? Catey glanced up at the sky once they had stepped out onto the porch.

?I'd love t'.? Seamus?s eyes were twinkling again. He looked up as they began the long walk home. ?Aye, I'd love t'.?

Wolvies

Seamus squeezed Catey's hand as they walked toward the inn. ?I din' know ye dueled, hon.? He watched her with a small smile in mild amusement after she had mentioned the possibility of her finding a match or two Outback. ?Wish I could 'ave seen ye in action there in th' rings.?

?You didn't know? I was so sure I had told you at least once how cool I thought it was to have someone as famous as Bran to offer to be my mentor. He was the Diamond at the time, too. You must have distracted me rather well for that not to have come up before.? She returned the gentle gesture as she looked around with a bright and happy smile. Walking through town hand in hand with Seamus on a warm July evening was one of her favorite things to do.

?I have an awful habit of distracting you like so.? Seamus had a wolfish grin for Catey.

?And you are very good at it.? She grinned back and then halted her steps for long enough to kiss that wolfish grin. She was still grinning when she pulled back again. ?And you're doing it again.? She winked.

Seamus gave her a one over. She had exchanged her leathers for a summer skirt and gypsy blouse. ?You know, skirts suit you well.?

?Perhaps I should buy another one?? It would take Catalina some time to get used to the idea of having more than one change of clothes. ?Or we could get you one.?

?You should buy a closet full. You could get fur lined ones for winter, too.? Seamus laughed and yet looked horrified. ?I don't think so; I didn?t wear my kilt years!?

?Fur lined skirts? I think not.? Catalina laughed with him as she tried to picture the look.

?Why not? I bet they are warm!?

?I could go for a comfortable leather one, though. Sure they're warm, with the icy winds, snow and whatnot blowing under them.? Catalina shook her head, still grinning.

?That works just as well.? Seamus grinned at her before he glanced up at the inn as they neared. ?Hmm, what do you feel like tonight??

?Besides you, you mean? I'd say surprise me, but last time I tried that you ended up bringing you two bottles of Guinness.? Her voice was teasing.

?I like Guinness, so sue me.? Seamus laughed loudly. It was a happy sound Catey attempted to provoke quite often.

?You can have all of mine.? She offered generously.

?Pfft, thanks.? Seamus leaned in to kiss her.

?You are very welcome.? Catalina chuckled softly after having returned his kiss. ?So, how about you surprise with something much less like Guinness and much more like spirits??

?A mixed drink?? He offered as they moved up the porch steps with a nod to those present.

?I could give that try.? She?d have been happy with just any kind of distilled spirit. But Seamus was offering and the evening felt special to her, so she?d try something special. She added her greetings to his to those gathered on the porch ? Mason, she thought she remembered a name to go with one of the faces there - before she stepped through the door Seamus held open.

?I don' really know any mixed drinks.? Seamus followed inside with a thoughtful frown.

?I guess I'm sticking with spirits then. It's way too late and a bit too warm for coffee, too.? Catalina chuckled softly. They could be adventurous some other evening.

?Indeed it is.? Seamus left it to Catey to fend for a seat at the bar while he moved back behind it to get her some spirits and himself a bottle of Guinness.

The bigger challenge as it turned out was deciding upon one of the many free seats at the bar. She gave a friendly nod to the few already seated and picked a stool at random. Only one of the group seated nearby returned her greeting. She didn?t have long to wait for Seamus to claim the stool beside her.

?Glad to be back, huh?? He set her drink before her before he sipped from his beer.

?Thanks, and yes.? Catalina grabbed up her glass. ?It's nice enjoying an evening stroll not having to worry about what might rise from between the cobbles.?

?A bit more dull, though, innit?? Seamus?s chuckle returned.

?Aye, very dull.? Catalina agreed, grinning. ?We've been here all of five minutes and no one tried to start a fight. We shall become quite bored.?

?Indeed.? Seamus pulled a pout. ?Which means I don' get ter see ye in action.? He winked before he took a swig of his Guinness.

?You've not seen enough of that yet??

?Coul' ne'er get enough.? Seamus winked.

?Lox would be so happy to hear you say we're coming back for another vacation on scenic Dragon's Eye.? Catalina managed not to laugh as she sipped from her glass. That the girl a couple stools over was offering the use of magical healing for the removal of some minor scars to her companion helped.

?I don' know 'bout tha'...? Seamus pulled a face.

?I'd much rather he'd not hear you complaining about how dull Rhydin can get.? Catalina tapped the tip of Seamus?s nose with a gentle finger, again laughing merrily. The lad at the bar had refused the in her opinion wasteful offer.

?Def'nitely more dull, ye know.. Nae fendin' fer our lives o' not'in'.? Seamus shrugged innocently. A few stools over the conversation had progressed to undead mages.

?Are you saying you actually miss that?? It was Catey?s turn to make a face.

?Nah, I got wolvies to worry about here.?

?You know, making your ranch work out well is the same thing, fending for one's life.? Perhaps she could yet convince Seamus that she could be help with those wolvies, Catalina pondered.

?Hmmm... perhaps.?

?Not just perhaps but definitely. And we get to worry about those wolvies together.? Perhaps it was better not to ask. She could at least give that approach a try.

?I don' know.? Seamus eyed her. Catey finished off her glass, returned it to the counter and slipped off her seat in favor of leaning against Seamus.

?I know it's difficult to just say yes. I didn't exactly jump at the idea of taking you to Dragon's Eye - at first. For all the same reasons.? Catalina had not really expected Seamus to just nod.

?Yeah, I know.? Seamus finished his Guinness and set it down before he stood up with her in his arms. He was still frowning, though, when he carried her to the door.

?I'll convince you yet.? Catalina sounded confident. Together they disappeared into the night.

Silk and Fur

Seamus snuffed the cigarette out with the toe of his boot before he stepped in through the back alley, ducking his head to avoid meeting with the door frame. His gaze swept the room as he made way for the bar at an easy pace, thumbs looped through his belt loops.

?It seems less than crowded this evening.? Catalina sounded pleased.

?Mus' b' a figh' 'r some'in' t'nigh'....? Seamus gave his companion another up and down look that was more than appreciative. While Catalina had not yet found a fur lined skirt, she had found a leather skirt she liked and that matched her leather jacket. Tonight she was wearing the skirt with suede boots and a soft knit sweater. Seamus regarded her with a rougish grin. ?Which by th' by, have I mentioned how good I thin' ye look??

?Mhm, once or twice.? Catalina grinned back. ?But you may mentioned it again. You look good enough to eat, too, by the way.? Then she had another look around, scanning the small crowd for any familiar looking faces and smiling and nodding to anyone who happened to look her way before she smiled to Seamus again. ?What are we getting from the bar this evening??

?Ye always say tha?...? Seamus laughed as he slipped behind the bar after he placed a kiss to her temple. ?Wha' ye feel like wettin' yer whistle wit' ternight??

?Spirited coffee sounds like just the thing in this weather, if you can put up with the aroma of coffee again.? She chuckled softly.

?Alleeeeeeeeeeeee!!!? The blue haired humanish male they had seen once or twice before bellowed as he reached the bar. Catalina searched her memory for a name to go with the face under that head of very blue hair.

?Bleh, donno why ye drink tha' junk... but fer ye, I'll do anythin'.? Seamus made a face of obvious dislike. But it was quickly followed by a rougish wink as he moved to begin the coffee making process.

?There's a full moon out tonight. I think I might see if I can find some werewolves to fight later.? Blue Hair directed his comment to one of the female patrons, Catalina noticed with well masked relieve.

?You're wonderful, but we knew that already.? She grinned back to Seamus just as rougishly as he had.

?Uh-huh, maybe we are discussin' ye an' not me, love.? Seamus grinned cheekily as he pulled some mulled ale from the tap.

?I'm sure you were the subject just now.? Catalina watched Seamus, enjoying the grace and fluidity of his movements.

?Yeah, yeah....? He lifted the glass for a long pull, and then leaned back against the back bar while he waited for the coffee. ?So wha' else did ye buy??

?It won't be much of a surprise if I tell you.? Catalina enjoyed surprising Seamus in general and with all sorts of things. This time she had a particularly good reason, though. Seamus knew what day he was born and the aniversary of that day wasn?t that far away. ?But I'm sure you'll like it. I found something for you, too.? She leaned over the bar in preparation to depart with a secret.

?Bah, wha' fun is tha'?? :Seamus waggled his brows, though he leaned in to hear Catey. The next moment he tossed his head back in an uproar of laughter. He slapped his knee, which nearly threatened the livelihood of his ale, and grinned to Catey. ?Oh, I bet those will feel real good 'round me privates.?

?We'll find out.? Catalina just grinned to Seamus with an impish and a little bit smug look. The fur undies had been the perfect secret to sacrifice in order to keep the others to herself, and Seamus?s reaction was all she could have wished for. ?How's that coffee coming along? I also found something in the darkest forest green that reminded me of court on Dragons Eye. The shop keeper assured me that is was real silk, woven thick to be worn in the winter cold.?

?A'righ', a' ready fer ye, dear.? Seamus nodded to the woman that just then joined him behind the bar before he set his beer down and moved to pour Catey her coffee, thick and black. With a wink to Catey he set the cup down before her. ?Ohh? Gonna make a dress outta it??

?It already is a dress, fancy looking, too.? She smiled, once again appreciating Seamus putting up with her preference of beverage in so graceful and considerate a way. ?If I had to make anything of it, it might become bandages, and bad ones at that.?

?So when will I get ter see ye innit, then?? Seamus found his ale again and sipped from it.

?When would you like?? Catalina had found some amber liquid in a bottle that smelled right and now added a generous amount to the coffee in her mug. To allow for heavy watering down of the coffee, she had a few swollows and then filled the cup up again.

?I derno.. any holiday bashes comin' up?? Seamus appeared hopeful.

?Not that I have heard of, but I've not been in town much of late.? Neither of them had been in town much of late. Catalina searched her memory for a moment and then shook her head slightly.

?Hm, I won'er.. somet'in'll come up I'm sure.? They both nodded greetings to the one eyed cyclopse and the male that slipped through the break in the bar. Seamus deduced that it was getting a little to tight for his own means and he picked up his tankard and slipped back around the bar to join Catey patron side.

?Shall we go look for a seat? It seems to be getting a bit crowded back here.? Catalina picked up her coffee mug to take along. ?We could always have our own private todo at the ranch.?

?Ye in a rush ter get me back in th' hay?? Seamus invited with an eyebrow waggle as he picked up a seat at a nearby table.

?Rush?? Catalina grinned and slipped into the seat beside his. There were several good ideas in his questions and currently she contemplated hay and all its implications. ?How quickly can you arrange for a Holiday and a celebration for it?? Before Seamus could answer her face lit up with the memory of one of the Holidays around these parts that shouldn't be all that far away. It was a celebration of the very one at which she had first met Seamus. ?Wasn't there a holiday that involved putting on costumes and collecting sweets??

?All 'allows eve?? Seamus raised his brows.

?That sounds about right. There has to be a party or bash for that one, right??

?Huh, I wouldn' b' surprised if there was one goin' on.?

?I am looking forward to an opportunity to dance with you again.?

?In me lion suit again?? Seamus?s eyes twinkled when he looked to Catey again.

?That was a wonderful costume.? Catalina remembered the get up with a chuckle. ?But seeing as I am getting to use a different costume, you should get to pick a new one to wear, too.?

?Yeah, s'pose I prolly should.. Wha' 're ye gonne ba??

?I've no idea yet. Perhaps you've a suggestion or two?? She brought her cup up for a drink before she gazed to Seamus again to hear his answer.

?Huh, didn' think abou' tha'.. We could be Undeads.? His previously knitted brows relaxed as he grinned this idea to Catey.

?I'd rather not.? Seamus was teasing, wasn?t he? ?Just how would you copy that horrible smell??

?Oi, true?? Seamus frowned at the mention of the odor. ?Ye got no ideas??

?None whatsoever. Perhaps we'll have to stick with the lion and the lady and the mask.?

?Or.. We could do summat else.? Seamus regarded Catey with a thoughtful look. ?We could be caveman and woman.? The thought of how he could toss her over his shoulder put that grin back in his face.

?I can tell just by looking at you that you've something particular in mind with that suggestion, but it does sound good.? Catalina admitted with a chuckle.

?It'd be fun!? Seamus grinned.

?I'm sure it will be. Whatever will we pass time with until then, what with you having to stay away from the hey until then?? Catalina teased.

?Oi, who said I'd wait tha' long?? Seamus laughed again, lowering his tankard with a suggestive waggle of his brows

?I could swear you did.?

?Nah... Unless ye are in a rush t' get back now...?

?No rush.? Catalina indicated her still half full mug. ?I doubt you're so curious as to want to see the green winter silk tonight.?

?Nah, no' so much tha' as other things...? Seamus grinned as he took another pull from the tankard.

?Other things?? Catalina?s grin took on an even more teasing quality. ?I didn't get any other things.?

?Wha' 'bou' those surprises??

?What suprises would that be?? While she was trying to fake ignorance and did well with that when lives depended on her acting abilities, she just couldn?t make that work with Seamus. That grin and that twinkle in her eyes just then appeared rather knowing.

?Don' play coy wit' me...? Seamus squinted his eyes, giving her a scrutinizing look, but he was also grinning. That chuckle she'd been holding back made a break for it.

?Perhaps we can have a look at one of the suprises when we get home.? It wouldn?t be all that much of a sacrifice to pull out one more surprise before his birth?s aniversary.

?Aye, I'd like tha' indeed.? Seamus nodded as he polished off what little remained in his tankard. Then he leaned back in his chair comfortably.

?I thought you might.? Taking his action as a sign of some sort, she finished off her coffee, then settled the empty next to his.

?Ye thin' Caliean woul' like a new bone?? Seamus threw out conversationally as he entwined his fingers behind his head.

?Of course he would. He always does. What kind were you thinking of besides big??

?I'm thinkin' pig....?

?An entire ham perhaps??

?Oh, 'e migh' like tha' a lot.? Seamus now looked a little excited. ?Ye think th' butchers migh' b' open still??

?We may have to look around a bit, but one of them still has to be open.? Catalina found his excitement to be contagous.

?Ye wan' t' see what we can find??

?Very much so.? Catalina stood up and held her hand out for Seamus to take which he promptly grasped as he came swiftly to his feet.

?Aye, c'mon then.? Already Seamus lead her for the door.

?I wonder if they have that smoked kind he liked so much last year.? Catalina nodded to the bouncer.

?Ooh, tha' would b' goo'! Cailean hasn' gotten too many treats recen'ly...? Seamus leaned in to swoop a kiss from Catey before pulling the door open for her. She waited to steal one back until they are outside and without witnesses.

?Mmm, a'ways delish!? Then they were off to hunt the night time Rhydin stores for a smoked ham.

Panther?s Claw Chivalry

Catalina and Seamus had been busy with the ranch and with simply enjoying peaceful life and recovering from their time spent on Dragon?s Eye. But this evening they?d take some time out to venture into town. During a previous quick stop in town Catalina had seen a poster for the Panther?s Claw Tournament at the Outback and she very much wanted to give that a try. As so often with best laid plans, Seamus was far from ready to leave when the time came. So Catalina set out on her own. Perhaps she hadn?t forgotten everything the famous lizard man had taught her and Seamus would still get to see her land a punch once he could join her.

When Catalina arrived at the Outback plenty of people were already present, seated at tables and at the bar and just standing in small groups. Even so she spotted Rena right away and went over to greet her.

?Good evening, Rena. Is it okay to sit here or is it a no-no to sit with the official??

?Help yourself, Catey. How are you?? Rena found time to return the greeting before she had to make an announcement.

?Just the tiniest bit bored. Seamus is trying his best to keep that from taking over, though. How are you doing?? Catalina pulled out a chair and sat down. People kept arriving, but so far she couldn?t spot a familiar face in the crowd other than her friend of old.

?I'm good. The candle orders are keeping me busy.? Rena replied as Catalina spotted a winged canine sip from a straw. A feline seated only a few chairs away looked to be enjoying the same kind of iced drink.

?I should get some when you have a little room for an extra order. I imagine with the temperatures falling, a few candles would add a little something to evenings spent by the fire.? Catalina mused as she watched an icy-blue skinned lady shimmering into existence.

?Just send a note about your favorite colors and scents and we can go from there.? Rena instructed before she was distracted again by a patron with an urgent question regarding the tournament about to start.

?Red or honey and something sweet, like lemon tarts or baklava.? Catalina answered when Rena looked to her again. She had not really thought about all the possibilities, but she was certain that if it involved lemons Seamus would enjoy it. A few tables over one of the high ranked brawlers grumbled loudly about not being allowed to enter the tournament.

Then it was time for Rena to announce the start of the tournament. Personal conversation would have to wait. Catalina listened to the rule reminders as she eyed the competition.

It took Catalina a moment to realize that she wasn?t asked to step into a ring during the first round. When she had she leaned back to watch the match in progress. She could do with a reminder of what hits were allowed and which not so much.

A few rounds into the match she caught a look from Rena and she promptly rose to her feet and excused herself.

?I?ll be right back.? With those words Catalina went over to the bar to fetch refreshments. For Rena she organized a cup of coffee, for herself a bottle of amber liquid and a glass. She returned in time to catch the last round of action of the first match and to enjoy a quick drink from her glass before Rena passed out ring assignments for round two.

?Horta has Tass and Thorne, Orion - Anya and Guill. Vulcan - Catey and Dris. Bajor has Natolii and Misty.? Rena turned to Catey then. ?Thank you.?

?You're welcome. I guess I see you after the duel.? Catalina smiled to Rena before she quickly drained her glass and then, setting the glass on the table, headed for the ring.

?Good luck to you all.? Rena?s voice rang out just before Catalina got a first good look at her opponent. He was a showman to judge by his stroll into the ring and the flourished bow to the audience before he turned to face Catalina.

?Good evening, Bard.? Catalina guessed.

?It's Dris, darlin'. Bard by trade, but Dris by name.? He gave her a wink before he took up what might appear to be a matador's pose, sans red cloth.

?You may call me Catey.? Catalina offered with a grin as she took a step toward him. She was a little surprised when Dris actually took to the air and flipped backward, her attack having been straight forward and lacking all finesse. But he quickly dodged her follow-up fist and she was left to admire his somersault.

?You were pretty quick there.? Catalina offered complimentary.

?Try t'stay light on m'feet, love.? Dris advised with the same generosity even as he leaped with an acrobatic flip over Catey?s next attack.

?So I see.? Catalina attempted to reset.

?Thanks, darlin'. Not so bad yerself.? Dris returned her grin with a wink as they circled with more caution.

?We should be getting points for all those well coordinated moves.? Catalina suggested with a grin.

?Aye. Bit like dancin' ain't it?? Dris wished for that matador's cape as he avoided another of Catey?s punches with a quick turn to the side. Then again, perhaps his opponent would then get the steers horns and that thought was not worth finishing.

?That is an interesting strategy you have there.? Catalina commented as Dris, slippery as a snake ducked and weaved away from her grasp. ?Normally I wouldn't mind a lady gettin' all touchy feely, but I've a notion ye're intendin' on doin' me more 'arm than good.?

?It's something to do with all the people watching.? Catalina returned his wink.

?Not a fan o' an audience I take it?? Dris chuckled deviously.

?Not generally.? She grinned

?I'll be sure t'keep that in mind.? He gave her another wink right as he brought his arm up to block her punch.

?An audience appears to be something you should out of professionalism of course desire.? Catalina started to enjoy the banter.

?Oh aye. I love a good show. Puttin' one on or watchin'. Either or.?

?I'm not sure I wanted to know all that.? If Dris meant to distract her, his plan seemed to be working.

?Just imagine it.? Dris grinned like a devil. But Catey wasn?t doing all that much imagining just now. Or maybe she just didn't appreciate the dirty thoughts he attempted to implant into her head. Either way, Dris found himself clocked right onto his back.

Since he was down there, he tried to bring her down to his level, but the lass followed her first punch with a second. A corner of her mouth lifted slightly as she felt it connect.

?Yegods, darlin'! Y'tryin' t'ugly me up so no one else'll want me?? Dris snickered.

?That wasn't the original intention, but thanks for suggesting it.? Catalina winked to the bard. Her comment made him laugh brightly and a moment later he was once again on his feet. Just in time for Catalina to help him back to the mat again.

It sort of worked, but Dris recovered quickly and then danced a pirouette right around Catey's flank so he could goose her. And, expecting to get hit real hard in retaliation for that, he ducked and covered. Peering through his fingers, he grinned when he wasn't hit, and since he was already down there... Time to sweep her off her feet!

?Be glad Des is not here, else the button would have gotten pushed.? Rena?s voice rang out.

?What button would that be, do you know??

?Sudden death.? Dris explained.

?Does that mean we have to stand up again??

?Not necessarily.? Dris grinned. They then helped each other up, sort of. Rena?s voice did not sound so pleased when she announced the result of this chivalry.

The grappling appeared to have a lot in common with dancing and Dris appeared intent on pulling her into a dance step and to finish with a dip worthy of a ball room. Catalina appeared just a little more intent on giving Dris a little something to remember her by at least for a little while. Dris did not fight that off at all! In fact, there was no better way to lose, he thought.

?Thanks, Dris. That was almost enjoyable.? Catalina winked. ?I'm looking forward to next time, if there is to be such a thing.?

Grinning gleefully, Dris flourished a bow. He rose up just in time to catch the consolation prize tossed to him by Rena.

Catalina barely had time to stop by the table for a healthy swig from the bottle still standing there before Rena assigned rings for the second round.

Panther?s Claw
Cats, Dogs and Something Naughty

There was no time for good luck wishes this time around. In fact, when Catalina made it into the next ring her opponent already stood ready. It was the bipedal feline Catalina had noticed earlier.

Catalina braced, but it did her no good. Her opponent caught her on the chin just as if she had done nothing to protect from the swing. In the next round Catalina proved to be slightly faster.

?Wows, that's a dusty ceilings!? The feline commented just before she whimpered after Catalina?s foot connected with her shin.

They circled each other for a moment after that flurry and Catalina caught her opponent?s name from Rena?s announcements before Misty sent her flying through the air.

Catalina failed to get up the next round. The round after that she didn?t even try but pulled Misty down to the mat with her. Her opponent once again that much closer, Catalina managed to connect a blow. This time they made it back to their feet before the round was over, but it was Misty rubbing her jaw.

Expecting another quick attack, Catalina braced. Caution paid off and Rena announced Catey the winner of this match.

?Yous really goods, Catalina. Has funs in the next ones!? Misty bowed with a little sigh before she slipped out of the ring. Catalina in turn was still catching her breath. The feline had been fast, very fast.

?Need a break, Catey?? Rena offered.

?Just a wee one.? Catalina found a grin for Rena and then come over for that bottle and a fortifying swig or two. ?It's too bad Seamus is missing all this. Okay, that was enough of a break.?

?No problem...take your time.? Rena nodded. ?In the final match, it will be Catey and Thorne to see who claims the Panther's Claw.?

Catalina nodded to Thorne, the winged lupine, and after another swig set the bottle back on the table and went over to the ring. She already had one foot in the ring when Rena?s last words fully sank in; ?Final match.? Had she really made it to the champion match? She hadn?t completely embarrassed her mentor altogether, she thought with a small grin. That she?d not seen him since her return made no difference.

Thorne stood up then, rolled his neck and flicked his wings a moment before he refolded them. He returned Catey?s nod as he stepped into his final match of the evening.

Both combatants started aggressive and after each received a hit their aim was off for their follow up swings. Thorne proved to be somewhat faster than Catey in the next round, pumping his wings and connecting with a kick Catey just could not get away from fast enough.

Neither was about to just give up and both came out of the next round swinging and with tender chins. Before Catey could duck away from Thorne?s next blow she found herself sitting on the mat. Another moment later Thorne peered at the ceiling from his place on the mat.

For the next little while they both were hard at work getting back to their feet with more or less success.

?Now that was a lot of style for nothing.? Catalina chuckled when Rena awarded them style points for the fumbling.

?It looked good though.? Thorne grinned back.

Seamus shouldered his way through the double doors, looking around for Catey. He looked tired, and a little sheepish for arriving so late in the eve. His face was flecked with dirt, which he wiped at with an equally dirty hand just in time to catch the last bit of action in the ring. Catey kicked out but her opponent was quick to open his paw up to chop at that leg.

?Ow.? In her attempt to escape Thorne's chopping at the last moment Catalina spotted Seamus. All pain was instantly forgotten.

?Thorne becomes the newest Panther's Claw holder.? Rena announced promptly.

?Congratulations, Thorne.? Catalina remained in the ring just long enough to offer Thorne her respects. Then she was out of the ring and ran over to Seamus to greet him with a hug...or to run him over, depending on how prepared he was.

A twinkle caught in Seamus?s eye as he caught Catey's last hit in the match, and though he winces he claps for her. That ended rather shortly as he was stampeded by a barreling Catey! He laughed, catching her in his arms.

?Aye there, dahlin'.? He had a roguish grin for her. In the ring Catalina had just vacated Rena awarded Thorne his hard earned and well deserved reward.

?Hello there, handsome. You didn't miss all of it.? Catalina chuckled, happy to see him and she demonstrated that with a sound kiss to his lips. His initial reply was lost in the kiss.

?Well, 'ello tae ye, too, doll.? Seamus pulled away with a grin. ?'ow long did ye last??

?Until just a moment ago...the last round of the tournament.? Catalina grinned proudly and with Seamus having a secure hold of her reached to catch the box Rena tossed her way. ?Rena, he made it. And thank you.? She waved the just caught box for clarification.

?Aye, not bad at all.? Seamus had an encouraging smile for her before he glanced to the caller who tossed Catey a box. He raised his brows and peeked. ?Wha' this b'??

?I think it's lemon bar flavored candles.? Catalina wagered a guess and offered the box to Seamus. ?Would you like to have a peek??

?Aww, well tha's disappointin'.. cannae eat candles.? Seamus waggled his brows but he peeked into the box just the same.

?You probably could eat them, they just wont taste at all what they smell like.? Catalina teased. At another table Dris pointed out Catalina to his late arriving companion, claiming that while she was a lovely lass she had given him a run for his money.

?Fair enough.? Seamus laughed.

?Thank you all for coming and see you next time.? Rena had packed up all her things into her bag and now prepared to head out.

?--y'fought a chick?? Dris?s companion sounded surprised.

?Aye, I fought. She bruised me 'ere.? Dris pointed out his injuries for his companion?s benefit. ?An 'ere... But then she kissed me.? Defensively he added, ?Not by choice.?

?Thank you.? Catalina waved to Rena and bided her tongue. Who was she to tell a bard how to tell a story? She smiled to Seamus again and with a gentle finger wiped a smudge from his brow. ?Do we have a drink first or are we in hurry to get home??

?An' I missed it. Figures, aye?? At the other table the bard companion dissolved into a fit of snickers.

?M'not sure I'd rightly callin' it me fightin' a chick though neither. More like she was beatin' on me an' I kept tryin' not t'get 'it.? The bard amended his story.

?Well, both sound good... wha' would ye like ter do?? Seamus added his fare well to Catey?s as Rena walked past.

?I would like to not leave that bottle there behind half full.? Catalina pointed to the bottle still sitting on the table she had shared with Rena earlier. ?And ...well, a couple other things I like have to wait until we get home, or at least on the way home.? She winked suggestively to Seamus.

?Le's go finish tha' bottle, then, dahlin'!? Seamus agreed with raucous laughter.

?Right this way, handsome.? Catalina laughed with him as she bowed him on the way to said bottle. Once there Seamus pulled a chair out for her.

?Take a seat, hon.? He bowed to the chair.

?Thanks.? Catalina sat down without letting go of his hand. Actually, she tugged at his hand lightly, as if trying to pull him down to sit in her lap.

?A'righ', a'righ'.. bu' I am nae sittin' on ye lap, doll.? Seamus laughed as he was tugged back after moving for the other side.

?So long as you don't sit in anyone else's lap, that's okay.? Catalina winked to Seamus and reached the bottle off the table. She nearly brought it up for a sip before she extended the bottle for Seamus to have a sip first. ?Unless you rather make use of that glass??

?I ain' scared o' yer germs.? Seamus challenged with a grin as he took the offered bottle and pulled a swig from it before he handed it back. He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and kicked out the chair beside her to sit down.

?Gods! Where're m' manners? Everyone? This is Icarus Marcotte.? Dris indicated the dashing man with the equally dashing bottle of whisky beside him. ?Icarus...? Lessee 'ere??

?Um... I did somethin' naughty, love.? Icarus wriggled his fingers to whoever he was being introduced to.

?Good evening, Icarus Marcotte.? Catalina offered.

?That there's Ahni, an' I've no idea 'oo the 'andsome bloke she's fawnin' o'er is. Beside 'em's Misty. Darlin' lass 'oo makes the best smoosh-ies this side o' anywhere... Fair sure y'know the Doc. That there's Catey. She's the lovely charmer what beat me outta the preliminaries. Kajiya! 'ello!? Dris smiled and waved to him. ?Not sure 'oo the looker Catey's got in 'er company either.?

?It would be a tad late for that anyway.? Catalina grinned to Seamus before she turned her head to help out Dris. ?Seamus, Dris.?

?Seamus! Another one. Well met!? Dris welcomed the help.

?Nae idea wha' yer talkin' 'bout.? Seamus said with an innocent shrug to Catey. Then he turned to Dris again and saluted. ?I b' Seamus. Pleasure ter meet ye, Dris, and Icarus.?

?Where'd Thorne go?? Dris mused with a look around for the Panther?s Claw winner. Meanwhile, Icarus began to slowly slide a piece of parchment paper across the table toward Dris. Eventually Dris? attention tore to the paper. He picked it up for a gander.

?Right.? Catalina wasn?t buying the innocent part of Seamus?s shrug, or so her grin told. Seamus dropped a hand to squeeze her knee. She took a healthy swig from the bottle before she offered it to Seamus again, which he gladly took.

Icarus hummed with fake innocence. Dris? lips twitched and a snicker escaped. And then Dris just busted up laughing.

?That makes me want to know what's on that paper to cause such merriment.? She watched the pair with a bemused grin.

?Are y'serious?? Dris turned the paper out to show Icarus his own masterwork, which gave everyone else a good looksee too. He gestured at it. ?Y'expect anyone t'recognize 'im with this!??

?Yer jus' too curious.? Seamus handed the bottle back, but he appeared amused as well. A few of the other people present started to giggle and chuckle, too. Obviously they had gotten a glimpse of the artwork.

?Too curious? Whatever do you mean?? Catalina winked to Seamus.

?Ye 'eard me.? Seamus chuckled and gave her knee another squeeze.

?Of course I did. Doesn't mean I know what you're referring to.? Catalina took another, much smaller and nearly ladylike swig from the bottle. Maybe swigging wasn't all that ladylike, no matter how delicate it was gone about. It was rare that anyone accused her of curiosity. In fact, there were all too many situations in which she preferred to remain ignorant.

?I mean ... really?? Dris pulled the paper back beside his own head so he could turn it and look at it from the side. ?Love, 'ow drunk were ye when y'made this??

?M'absolutely serious!? Icarus grinned from ear to ear, looking more dragon than human just then. ?An' the better question is, when am I not drunk enough t'do that??

?Good point.? Dris snorted with amusement and turned the paper back around so he could gape incredulously at it, smearing a hand over his face. ?Gods on 'igh...?

?He's m'brother.? Icarus told the small crowd informatively, nodding with serenity and somberness. ?An' he's a right little snot, yes he is.?

?If this doesn?t get 'is attention I don't know what will.? Dris patted the paper with the backs of his fingers from his free hand.

?Oh, aye. If he ain't stompin' up to our door by tomorrow, I'll be disappointed.? Icarus grinned and turned to one of the other giggling patrons. ?He looks just like that, too! ..an' he does smell.?

?It wasn't, nice try.? Seamus picked up their conversation again with a little chuckle. ?So 'ave ye missed fightin'??

?The nice kind? Maybe a little. I'm not missing the not so nice kind.? Catalina missed Dragon?s Eye from time to time and her job. She?d been at her job for too long and was too good at it not to. But she was more than glad to be away from the war. ?Are you missing any of it??

?Well, me neither. I'd b' happy if ye ne'er wen' back.?

?Hmm. What about you?? Seamus was not originally from Rhydin, either. It had been some time since Catalina asked him about his home.

?I like it 'ere.?

?I like you liking it here.?

?Do ye like it 'ere??

Catalina?s eyes searched his before she answered.

?Yes.? It was a simple yet sincere answer.

?Good.? Seamus smiled to her, eyes twinkling.

?Probably.? She winked. ?It's not like there are all that many options of where to go.?

?Pfft, there be places all o'er th' 'verse.?

?Oh? I've only seen two. What places of those do you like?? It was an idle question. Neither of them really contemplated re-locating.

?I derno, I only been 'ere, Earth, an' Dragon's Eye... but I 'ear o' all other sorts o' places.?

?Would you like to check out any of them, or are you sure you like it here best??

?It b' more fun 'round these parts.? Seamus chuckled with a nod to those around.

?I share that opinion.? Catalina had another slow swig from the bottle, then offered it back to Seamus.

?Well, glad we got o' agreement an' all.? Seamus held on to the bottle for a while before he?d pass it over again.

?You did know that before all the questions got asked, didn't you?? Catalina leaned up against Seamus. One or two of those questions had a serious aura to them.

?Aye, tha' I did.? He nodded with a sheepish grin.

?What do you think about a dinner by the fire with some of these delicious smelling candles lit?? Catalina promptly changed the subject.

?I think tha' sounds fantastic. Will th' real thing be involved?? Seamus sounded hopeful.

?What real thing would that be, darling?? Catalina asked, again sounding teasing.

?Why, lemon bars o' course.? Seamus replied with an all too innocent mien.

?We could make them part of it.? Catalina chuckled. ?Do you think Cailean will enjoy it too??

?Cailean migh' try ter eat 'em, ter b' honest.?

?Did he try before?? Catalina couldn?t recall the wolf to ever have made a try for the lemon bars. Perhaps that was only because Seamus never left any sitting around for long.

?He likes ter eat thin's he thinks smell good.?

?We'll have to make sure he doesn't get into the candles. Especially not after they're lit.? That sounded easy enough.

?We can shut th' door.?

?We could.? Catalina?s grin deepened. ?Then I'd have you all to my wicked self and you'd be minus his protection.?

?Oh, God forbid.? Seamus waggled his brows.

?Which one?? Catalina chuckled and started to tickle him.

?Both.? Seamus swatted her hand, laughing. But she just took that hand to pull his head to hers. Kisses were much more enjoyable than tickles and whatever he was going to say next was lost in the kiss.

?Mm, mebbe we should 'ead 'ome, aye?? Seamus murmured against her lips instead.

?You have the best ideas.? The bottle was empty, too, and Catalina set it down on the table.

?Glad ye think so.? He took her hand as they rose from their seats, clasping it securely. The box of candles he carried in his other hand.

?Lead the way handsome.? Catalina waved to the others for the both of them. ?Good night.?

?Goo' nigh', ye all!? Seamus led them to the door and out they went.

Documents and a Key

?Good evening.? Catalina nodded in greeting to those within proximity as she stepped up the bar of the Red Dragon Inn. The men sitting there all seemed to be the quiet type. The woman behind the bar took a swallow of coffee and to judge by the grimace she made as she swallowed the coffee was cold.

?Nah, he'd breathe on'em, burn'em up. Too good for th' ordinary, he is.? The woman replied to a comment Catalina had missed. Then she jerked her chin up to Catalina, returning the greeting.

?Are you tending this evening?? Catey smiled over and set the bakery bag on the counter and with a thought of what all stuffed the pockets of her jacket decided not to take the jacket off. It wasn?t as if it clashed painfully with the leather skirt she was wearing.

?Maybe, if you're tippin'.? The woman replied with an indifferent shrug.

?I can do that.? Catalina grinned and dug in her leathers for change. ?I'd love some spiked cider and it's probably safe to ask for a cold Guinness.? She found the coins to cover the drinks and a generous tip and set them on the counter.

It was safe but she didn?t know that yet. Already Seamus was nearing the inn, Cailean scampering around and between his legs in excitement.

?Just touchin' me that had him all worked up. Be knocked down a peg'r two here soon enough.? The woman finished her conversation with a nod before she pushed off from the back-bar and grabbed a bottle of Guinness from the 'fridge. She didn?t read the label, but she knew the type of bottle. ?Hot cider'r cold?? She wanted to know as she delivered the bottle.

?Hot please, if it's not too much trouble.? With an afterthought she added, ?Oh, and a glass of water, too, please.?

Cailean beat Seamus him up the porch stairs of the inn, jumping up on Guido and giving him licks. Seamus snickered before he whistled at the wolf that instantly jumped back down and began pacing as he waited impatiently.

?Oy, 'old yer horses ye wild thin' ye.? Seamus shook his head as he stomped up the porch steps.

Inside Catalina unbuttoned her leather jacket and reached inside. When her hand came out again she held a couple of roses. She frowned at their red heads, finding them a bit worse for wear, and tried to tease them back into shape with her fingers.

?Perhaps the water will perk them up again.? With that mumble she set them in the water glass. ?Thank you.? She smiled up to the woman behind the bar.

?Bleedin' mad, ye are.? Seamus was grinning, though, and he lowered his hand to scritch between Cailean's ears before he moved to swing the door open. With a salute for Guido he slipped inside. Cailean was only yards ahead of him and scampered off for Catey and whatever smelled so good in that bakery bag! Again, Seamus just shook his head. ?Trouble, th' whole lot o' t'em.? He had a cheeky grin and wave for Catey as he followed after Cailean at a leisurely pace. Catalina turned around and reached down to greet Cailean with a scritch behind each ear even as she smiled up to Seamus.

?Hello there, handsome and happy birthday.? Once Cailean had been properly greeted she straightened and went to greet Seamus with a hug and a thorough kiss. He'd have to wait for his scritches behind the ears until they got home.

?Mm, thank ye, love.? Seamus laughed and swooped Catey up into his arms, welcoming the kiss. He sniffed with a hopeful expression when he set her on her feet again. He had noticed bulges in her pockets, too. ?Summat smells good... Ye don' happen t' 'ave lemon bars, do ye??

?I do have lemon bars.? Catalina admitted with a wide smile and indicated the counter. ?Along with a cold Guinness waiting for you. The flowers are for you, too.?

?Oh, mus' b' me lucky day!? Seamus grinned like a kid on Christmas. Though he quirked a brow at the roses as he swiped up his beer. ?Aye, a woman after me own 'eart.? He waggled his brows at Catey and leaned in to steal another kiss. She was happy to let him steal one of those, temporarily having her chuckle muffled.

?That's a good thing as it appears you're stuck with me for the time being. Let's sit so you can enjoy the treats.? Catalina spotted Rena arriving just then and waved to her. Rena returned the greeting but kept on going toward a seat by the hearth, avoiding the bar for the time being.

?Mm, now tha', tha' I can do.? Seamus plopped down on the stool beside her and Cailean curled up at their feet, making do with merely looking around excitedly. Catalina picked a bone shaped cookie from one of those stuffed pockets of hers and snuck it to Cailean as she sat down.

?Good boy.? She whispered to the wolf before she nudged the bakery bag closer to Seamus. He promptly stuck a hand in the bag to steal a lemon bar, and stuffed his mouth with it rather elegantly.

?Fank ye, dow.? His voice was all distorted from the treat. When he spotted Rena, he waved a hand and grinned with a mouth full of yellow pastry. His greeting, too, was returned right away. Cailean, on the other hand, was thrilled with his bone and he tried to be quiet with it. But it clattered noisily onto the ground and he began to gnaw savagely on it.

?You're very welcome, darling.? Her smile turned theatrically thoughtful as she mused out loud, looking between lemon bars, Guinness, flowers and Seamus ?Birthday flowers, birthday cake, birthday kiss, birthday ale. Hmm. Seems something is still missing.? She appeared to puzzle over what was missing.

?Eh, I don' know... ? Seamus wondered with a dubious tone, blinking at Catey. What else could be missing? He was a happy man.

?Hmm, there has to be something...? She patted her pockets, barely keeping from grinning.

?Ye got tha' sneaky look 'bout ye.? Seamus squinted and narrowed his eyes. ?Wha' else ye hidin' there love?? He peeked around her curiously from his seat.

?Perhaps we should have a look.? Catalina delved into those pockets and set whatever she found in them on the counter; a small wad of papers, a small box of mulling spices, a hand full of coins, a key, another handful of those bone-shaped cookies and an apple.

?Wha' 'zactly am I lookin' at?? Seamus blinked and tilted his head.

?Hmm, the cookies are for Cailean and the coins are for drinks.? She picked up each pile of those and returned them to her pockets before she looked over the rest of the items, trying her best to appear to have difficulties in coming up with explanations for Seamus.

?The key is yours. There's a trunk with a lock matching it that by now should be somewhere on the ranch. Do we have a stable yet or just a barn?? Catalina was rather proud of her distracted professor impression.

?Mm, cookies? For ol' Cailean?? Seamus laughed and took a swig of his beer. Then he blinked. ?Th' key is mine? Why?? He raised a brow as he refreshed her memory, ?Th' barn's got a stable attached... Jus' finished it las' week.?

?Then the trunk is likely inside the stable by now.? Catalina nodded. Of course she?d not forgotten inspecting the stable or just how proud and happy he was with it. And, for that matter, how proud she was of Seamus and the fine job he?d done with it. But the stable was also rather empty of animals. ?Well, you need to get to the stuff inside the trunk, don't you?? She was definitely grinning now.

?Is this like a scavenger hunt?? Seamus asked with a blank stare.

?What's a scavenger hunt?? No one had mentioned any such a thing being part of birthday celebrations to her.

?When ye have t' go find somethin' someone hides, then tha' is jus' a clue t' another thing t' go find and ye keep doin' tha' til ye get to th' last thing, which is th' prize.? Seamus wondered how she couldn?t know such a thing.

?I didn't hide anything. I'm sure the trunk is in plain sight.? Catalina winked to Seamus as she nudged the wad of papers his way. ?These might shed some light on things. Good evening, Marek.? She greeted their friend who just then stepped up to the bar. His guitar coffin was noticeably absent this evening. The man nodded to the couple before he pushed behind the bar.

"Playing tonight?" A pretty girl asked of Marek while Seamus gave the papers before him a suspicious look. He lowered his Guinness to check them out and nodded his head at Marek in greeting.

?Hey, lon' time no see, me friend! How goes it?? The wad of papers appeared to be made up of receipts and a couple of birth certificates of sorts.

?Sorry doll face, I didn't bring the case tonight... maybe next time.? Marek winked to the pretty face before he grabbed up a tankard and filled it from the nearest tapped' keg behind the bar. He gave Seamus another nod as he took up a lean behind the bar. ?Goes all right... can't complain too much... I've been busy lately. You two been behaving??

?Behaving?? Seamus tilted his head. Upon closer inspection, the receipts are for everything from tackle and brushes to fence posts, wire, wine and even a metal feeding station. ?Wha' are these certificates fo' 'zactly??

?Those? Hmm, they must be the papers that came with the new occupants of that stable.? Catalina replied evenly, glancing to the way too dressed up for her apparent age girl stepped up to the bar with eyes narrowed and trained upon Marek. Marek in turn glanced from Catey to Seamus, also curious about those papers and stable occupants.

?Ye didn', did ye?? Seamus?s eyes widened considerably.

?Take a picture lass, it'll last longer.? Marek suggested with a raised brow to the girl that was still just looking at him.

?Did what?? Catalina opted for the fake blank look. She knew very well what she did. But that bull had looked at her just so with those big round eyes from under the longest lashes ever, she just couldn't leave him behind. The horses had been planned for, though.

?I... I can' thank ye enough.? Were those tears in Seamus?s eyes? Nah, just a trick of the light. Though, he did look incredibly grateful.

The girl, she looked to be perhaps ten, was not a very patient child. She huffed at Marek?s manners before she let words curl out in a hiss," Lotus wine."

?You have any money short stuff? Or going to use monopoly money?? Marek tilted his head over the bar at the girl as he lifted his own tankard for a drink.

?You were planning on having some animals at some point, no? It's not much of a ranch without any, you know.? Catalina?s grin turned out a bit guilty. She didn?t want to make Seamus cry. But she was immensely happy with his reaction.

?Yeah, yeah... bu' tha's a lot o' money!? Seamus agreed with an exasperated sigh before he lifted his drink for a long swig. ?I don' know wha' ter say...?

"How dare you. Of course I have money." The girl?s lips curled in a sneer. Her fingers disposed a gold upon the bar top without a care as she hissed under her breath.

?Be nice kid, or I'll have to put you over my knee.? Marek nodded over the bar at Lily, taking the gold coin but not moving much from his lean behind the bar to get a drink for her.

?Well... you remember me telling you of talking with the banks the other day and exchanging some stuff for the local currency?? The key and was of paper taken care off, that left the box of mulling spices.

"I would like to see you try... Male." Marek?s neck was looked over as if he was fitted for a piece of clothing before the girl muttered," Black." She made the word sound like something dirty. She lifted her chin proudly before she spoke again," Lotus wine. Now."

?Huh, yeah... I remember tha'...? Seamus tilted his head at her. ?Why go though all tha' trouble??

?Get it yourself, short stuff.? Marek flipped the coin in his hand and then tossed it back at her as he adjusted his lean against the back bar. ?I don't work here, shorty... learn to do things for yourself skinny britches.?

?It's easier to have local coin for payment than trying to pay them with jewelry or golden plates or any else along those lines.? Catalina explained. Besides, animals would look so much better in the barn than bits of a Golden?s treasure.

?Aye, I s'pose so...? Seamus frowned over the rim of his beer. He was grateful but he also felt guilty. Then he chuckled. Catalina leaned over and wrapped her arms around his shoulders.

?You've been working so very hard, but no matter how hard you work with all that wood and nails, you can't make a horse or cow that way.? Catalina kept her words quiet.

?Very true.? Seamus grinned at her. She smiled back and then placed a kiss on the tip of his nose before she sat back again. He followed her nod to the box of mulling spices with his gaze.

?Those are for later.? Catalina explained. The apple she had pulled out was of course for the horses, when Seamus went to meet them.

?You are the most vile little vermin I have ever met. If you do not work here then why are you behind the bar?" The little girl was still staring at Marek.

?Wha' b' they for, 'zactly?? Seamus returned a questioning gaze to Catey.

?I can keep an eye on things best from this spot, squirt. Why don't you run along and go play dolls with your friends? It's a bit late for you to be out by yourself.? Marek was still remarkably patient with the girl. A smirk perked his lips with a nod down at the girl. ?Don't make me call your mother.?

?I figure by the time you said hello and got reasonably acquainted with the new stable inhabitants and got to look at everything we'll be chilled enough to enjoy a nice warm fire and mulled wine while sitting in front of it to thaw out.? Catalina didn't hide her grinning now. Even her eyes sparkled with it. The wine to be mulled was already in the kitchen.

?Ahh, ye think o' everythin' honey.? Seamus beamed.

?It's wonderful to see you this happy.? Catalina beamed right back, as excited as he was and now relieved to be able to show it. She chuckled softly. ?You've no idea how hard it was not to let on all week. And Cailean was so good; he didn't breathe a word either.? She leaned down to pet the wolf as she spoke his name.

?I'd be worried if he had!? Seamus laughed and looked down at the wolf who was still enjoying his bone, though he leaned into the scritches.

?You make it sound like he'd open his maw and words would come out.? Catalina shook her head slightly, grinning. ?I was referring to him not making any fuzz or noises when I came home smelling of cows and horses to give the surprise away.?

?Ahh, I see.? Seamus nodded and took another swig. The little girl was still trying to boss Marek around.

?Kid? bugger off now... before someone decides to enslave you and make you clean the floors of their barn.? Marek made a wave off motion with his hand.

?Ooh, enslaved labor to clean barn floors? Sign her up!? One of the other patrons cut in.

?Are you eager to get home now?? Catalina remembered her cider and picked up the glass for a drink. It was barely warm now rather than hot. But she'd been too excited earlier to enjoy it. She smiled to Seamus again after a few swallows. The mention of someone cleaning a barn had her glance over to Marek.

?Only if it's to spend some time wit' ye, doll.? Seamus waggled his brows for her from over his glass.

?You definitely will get to do that. I'm not going to miss any of your reactions to the new inhabitants.? Catalina promised and smiled wide to Seamus. Receipts, apple and anything else Seamus may not have picked up and pocketed went back into her pockets. ?Don't forget your birthday flowers.?

?Mm. Le's go.? He returned his bottle to the counter and rose. The key and the papers for the breeding stock were already stuffed in his own pockets. Grinning, he whistled at Cailean, who scrambled up. At Catey?s reminder he picked up the flowers.

?Good night.? Catalina tossed a wave to Marek and Rena each before she settled her hand into Seamus?s. Then she was ready to head out.

?Gotta love kids... that's why they made birth control.? Marek smirked and bade a fare well to Catey and Seamus.

Seamus waved to everyone, too, before the pair headed out followed by the wolf.

Hurricane Coffee in Stiff Company

Once again in her leathers and carrying a bakery bag Catalina strode inside, heading barward with a glance around. She was greeted by a string of courses and the blue haired wonder picking himself up of the floor. She had to grin at the witch?s reaction.

"Were ya' a more masculine figure, I'd even have tossed in a kiss fer tha' heavy hand o'yers with tha' pre'tty amber bo'ttle." The witch grinned from ear to ear as though her face was born for just that purpose. She fired it off in Bree's direction before she blinked to the blue haired mess that had fallen to the tables.

With a whistle the man fished a comb out of a pocket and ran it through that mop of blue hair atop his head before he strolled toward the bar. A further glance around told Catey that the resident dragon was awake and had some family along for company and the usual assortment of patrons was present as well, including a Kender brewing and serving tea. The only thing missing was familiar faces.

?'evening.? She greeted those already seated at the bar with a ready smile. ?'anyone tending this evening or is it open bar??

?I demand service!? Harris, who had reached the bar at about the same time as Catey, pounded a fist on the bartop upon reaching it.

?Help yourself,.? The resident dragon rumbled as she moved toward her water dish.

?You keep on demandin'.? The Kender mocked Harris with a smile. ?Let me know when that works fer you.?

?There's a shiny penny in it for you.? Harris tempted back with a wide smile.

Catey translated her observations to mean tonight was a self serve night and slipped behind the bar. Harris and the Kender were still bartering for service and pennies When the Kender offered to help to locate something drinkable.

?I'd really love some hurricane coffee, but if there isn't any of the dark brew around, the hurricane will do by itself.? Catey grinned to the suddenly helpful Kender, agreeing that Harris?s ways were not particularly inclined to solicit charitable feelings toward him.

The Kender rolled her eyes at Harris and suggested another target to annoy to him before she replied to Catey.

?There's plenty'a coffee just made - what's th' hurricane??

?I've never seen her before. She could be some uber wizard and turn me into, like, a rake.? Harris didn?t exactly decline the Kender?s advise.

?It's spirits, here it's called brandy, I think.? Catey reached deep into the right pocket of her leather pants and came out with a handful of the local coins, which she offered to the Kender with a friendly grin.

The Kender nodded and blinked at the coins - which skinny fingers made vanish with surprising speed - and then she pulled down a mug. Coffee and brandy passed over the cup in rapid order. Meanwhile Harris was picking a fight with a knightly looking patron by flinging peanuts at the gent.

?Thanks. You're pretty speedy.? Catey complimented when less than a minute later she had a cup of hurrican coffee sitting in front of her.

?I think we may need to batten down the hatches.? Harris rudely pointed at the next wave of patrons walking through the door. Perhaps it was his tactic of distracting the knight from any plans of revenge. ?And by we I mean you, Kendall, because I don't know how to batten anything. Or where the nearest hatch is for that matter.?

?Ain't hard.? The Kender?s chin jerked up before she was distracted by Harris.

The coffee mug came patron side with Catey. She took a lean against the bar and nodded toward Harris. ?He always this friendly??

?Dunno what a hatch is.? The Kender shrugged at Harris. ?Ehh, we get on.? She replied for Catey as a definitely undead creature came close to Harris. ?Think it's gonna goo on you.?

Up to this point Catey had tried very hard not to take notice of the abomination. While it was perfectly acceptable, even expected, to destroy such a creature on sight at home, here such action would be severely frowned upon. But even the knowledge of that the abomination wasn?t going to try to pull everyone within reach underground didn?t keep her skin from crawling.

?I should've brought popcorn.? Harris sounded like he was looking forward to the theater of goo dropping on people. ?Hey. Gimme a big bottle of something.? He held out toward the Kender.

"Makin' friends already, Harris?" The witch chuckled . Her reaction to the rotting hand with its wicked, nightmarish looking flesh didn't go further than a flick of her pale, brow and a small, knowing smile. The abomination gurgled and growled before it launched at Harris, claws and teeth displayed.

?Friends? Of course! Everybody loves me.? Harris answered even as he grasped for the neck of a vodka bottle. ?No mas!? Harris appeared suprisingly nimble in his evation of the abomination.

?A creature of the undead!? The knightly man noticed with some alarm and with almost comical delay. Catey took another swig from her coffee mug.

?How come nobody ever summons anything cute to fight for them? Like a giant bunny?? Harris complained. But he did not appear all that concerned about having been attacked by the rotting creature.

?Then you'd have giant bunny dung around. Mess t'clean up.? The Kender absently informed Harris before she offered in Catey?s direction, ?Kendall. Or Bree. And that?s Harris.?

?I'm not fighting.? The necromancer replied evenly as she watched the abomination sail over Harris and then going for one of Harri?s legs with a gurgle. ?Tch. Good help is so hard to find...? She turned toward the aged and possibly senile knight with clasped hands, a woeful look and heaving bossom. ?You'll save us, won't you good knight!??

?Most call me Catey.? Catey offered in return with an easy smile. She made it appear easy, that is, which realy wasn?t all that easy with an abomination trying to get a hold of a living leg. It was Harris?s leg, though, and the creature appeared to be clumsy aplenty.

"Calm yer'self, Magnus... Ya' see all sor's here in this realm, good an' bad." Pale fingers reached between the space that held the witch and the aging knight seperate, biding him to be still.

?Obviously this thing doesn't speak spanish.? Harris jerked a knee upward as the creature opted to take the low road, looking to inflict some damage: As his kneecap met the jaw of the undead, said jaw went flying up and landed with a crack on the counter. The thing didn't slow much, however, and claws were still alashing.

?Fear. I actually miss feeling that one from time to time. Really reminds you that you're alive.? The necromancer?s woeful look was replaced with a little laugh. Only a few seats over patrons seemed not to notice the ongoing battle, focused on their bottles and conversations. Catey guessed they were as aware as she was and trying their best to remain far away from the stench of rotting flesh.

For a moment the knight was complacent. That did not last long, however. ?But it is attacking that man! I must not stand by and do nothing!? And upon hearing the pale woman, the knight was on his feet. He took her words completely seriously. ?Fear not, my lady! I shall destroy this creature!?

?Just when things were gettin' fun.? Bree glanced at the water clock with a sigh. ?You-all enjoy playin' with Miss Crunchy an' her rottin' helper. Yer monster dropped this.? Bree helpfully pointed at the jaw while she rounded the break to leave.

?Have a good one.? Catey nodded to Bree.

?Eee. Rrr-enne noh li-ke Feahrrr. Hew-mahns go-t Feahrrr too mu-ch...Some-ti-me.? A man commented quite bluntly, insinuating the necromancer was afraid to fight her own fights.

?My hero!? The necromancer batted her lashes toward the knight. Catey shifted her lean against the bar between generous sips from her coffee mug.

?Maybe it's Estonian?? Harris queried before he found claws digging into the flesh of a defending forearm, which caused him to swing that bottle of vodka at the creature's skull. ?Agh! I might have rabies now!? The aimed for skull cracked noisily, but it merely slowed the abomination a bit. With a fading gurgle, the abomination lashed about at random, mostly tearing at air.

"Oh fer the love o'the Goddess, yer all mad as ha'tters, ye' know tha'?" Laughing out loud, the witch quelled the bulk of her gesture with a sip from her mug.

Harris took advantage of the just enough space to jump up and send a flying foot into the creature?s chest.

?You will not kill it like that!? The knight yelled that bit of information toward Harris as he started in that direction, pulling a warhammer from his back.

?Oh, I'm sure that smarts...? The necromancer snickered as ribs cracked. The creature stillmoved even with the huge dent in its chest.

?All yours then, buddy.? Harris sounded generous for once and was quick to disengage. In a flahs he stood next to the necromancer, pointing toward the wound on his forearm.?I demand reparations.?

?Leave it to me!? The night sounded all too heroic. The hammer glowed golden in the tavern light as it swung at the undead creature. The thing just gurgled and lashed ? Until that glowing hammer smashed it. It was pretty much dead after that. Well... deader.

?Praise be to you, sir knight!? The necromancer applauded before she glanced at Harris?s wounded arm. ?Hm... I suppose you are right. I shall make this right for you.? With that she ventured behind the bar in no particular hurry.

Catey decided that this was likely the most oportune moment to make her escape. The way to the door was currently free of undead, and there was no telling how long that fortunate state would last. Her coffee mug was empty, too. She set the mug on the counter and surrendered her lean against the bar. After nodding a farewell to Harris and the witch she strode for the door, avoiding the temporarily prone abomination.
