Sledge

The chateau was surrounded by a large complex, situated on top of a hill overlooking the city of Galifi. The port could be seen in the distance freighter ships rolled in and out of the harbor their slow progress could be easily marked from the wall. Derrick had just scaled that wall, except that for now he wasn?t Derrick but Sledge. The telepath pushed out with his mind projecting his thoughts into any mind he encountered. This place was easy, the people seemed unprepared for his particular talent. That didn?t stop him from being picked up by vid cams. He couldn?t change what they would see, too much interference and distance between him and the room that housed them.

A voice sounded in his earpiece as he looked into the compound. Above him the camera panned back and forth. Those were to be Laz?s responsibility. ?Alright Sledge remote access accomplished?move in thirty.?

One thousand and one?the count began in Derrick?s head, but he spared a moment for Lazarus. ?Thirty seconds? You couldn?t give me more time?? He got into position, continuing his count silently. It was more time than he needed enough to make his break across the compound and be inside. Laz would have all the remotes recording so Sledge would need to get past the cameras within that one minute window.

?You wussing out Sledge? Hells, Nemesis moves faster than you and he's loaded for bear, besides, any longer and it will be very noticeable on some of those cams.? Sledge shook his head and charged onwards. He looked very strange dodging and juking around people but there was good reason. His ability made them see and hear nothing. A physical touch would give him away and leave him very exposed. He was armed well, but not well enough to take out the amount of people between him and his extraction.

A second voice cut across the channel at them. ?Can the chatter? this signal may not be secure.? Lee was a good leader, her priority was getting her boys out alive, mission accomplished. Her boys made them all chuckle as she was the youngest of the crew, except for Hel that is, new to the team and very much a carbon copy to Lee. Derrick didn?t trust her, second gen serum user. Sure they had pushed that crap into him supposedly to enhance his ability, but truth was he didn?t feel any different now than he ever had.

Karl, the final member of Black Op group designated Outsiders laughed into the coms. Derrick wanted to tell him to get bent but the man outranked him, and Lee would of course be pissed if he broke coms again. He hated to disappoint the dark haired leader though he really couldn?t say why. She called him Sledge, well she called him many things including pretty boy. He assumed it was because of the pony tail, either way it was funny.

?In position.? Hel?s voice, Delia had cool tones at the best of times for her teammates. This particular version was used in Derrick?s opinion to rub his nose in it that she had reached station first. Course she didn?t need to worry over the cameras and bumping into people. One disguise and act like she belonged. It was one thing to try and prove yourself, another to try and prove that you could replace any of the team. She was ostracized for it too. Lee had tried to reign her in, include her but she just didn?t seem to want to be a part of what they shared.

Derrick stepped out of a stairwell silently, he moved stealthily down the hall towards the door at the end of the corridor. ?Control, am in place to pick up the CEO, awaiting imminent arrival?? He held outside the room waiting for Laz to grant access through the electronically locked door. Moments ticked by with no sound forth coming. ?Sif??

Sif?s voice cut across his hearing. ?Abort?we?ve been made.? There were sounds of gunfire across the earpiece and then static.

?Sif? Laz? Nemesis?Dammit! Hel someone better start talkin?.? He stood stock still, his team had never not spoken before. One maybe two wouldn?t be able to respond but never the entire team. A soft voice in his ear came then, though it was not the one he had hoped for.

?She?s dead Sledge, they hit her position and leveled everything that moved. Proceed to secondary extraction point. I can see the others positions, they are pinned down. That?s an order Specialist.? Derrick felt cold inside, the entire crew wasn?t possible. He moved quickly though he was beginning to feel fatigue in his mind. His route took him down the service elevator and out through the loading dock. The further away he got the safer he was. There was a ship out in the harbor that he would meet with. A set of keys under the dash of a speed boat would take him to the place.

Derrick hit the floor of the boat and sat at the helm. He searched for keys that weren?t where they were supposed to be. ?Sledge.? A voice behind him came unexpected. This had been his secondary extraction. They had each made their own ways to get out to that ship, better chance that they wouldn?t all be caught. He hadn?t told anyone, but the smirk faced man behind him said that somehow they had known. More importantly though, the man in the boat with could see him. He held up a hand to forestall Sledge?s immediate reaction. ?The others are gone, I?m Breaker with Psi, sent to get you out. We received word that the mission was compromised but couldn?t get here in time.?

?You mean dead don?t you?? Psi, that at least told him why he was able to ignore Sledges glamour. He Moved to the back of the boat and?.

The scene repeated itself once, and again for a period of thirty seconds, then it moved forwards with a strange sort of jump. Breaker lay face down in the back of the boat, blood oozed from beneath him and bits of his forehead could be seen briefly until the river of red oozed over them. The image stopped and lights came up. A voice in the back of the room echoed over the heads of a large group of men and women.

?We lost contact with him here, somehow a thirty second loop managed to be recorded and broadcast back to the surveillance cameras. This man has been trained to disappear, literally folks before your eyes, fact of the matter is he could be in this room now and none of us would know?or almost none of us.? The speaker locked eyes onto the backs of two or three heads. Two men and one woman all from Psi division, all who had proven useful against the sort of powers that Sledge used.

?Computer Access file, Derrick Masters? Code Name: Sledge? A holo-display was now on screen. The speaker looked at the screen along with them. ?We attempted to bring him back for debrief and transfer into the Psi division. These attempts resulted in the loss of agents. CEO has been issued for Sledge? Control didn?t mention how many attempts were made, the number may have driven a few from the room.

?Each of you has a copy of his Dossier?now let?s take a look at Mileena Lakic AKA Lee, Codename: Sif?

Lt Lazarus

If he had been wearing night vision goggles the strange hues in Line Of Sight would have been understandable. Had he even been wearing one of those million cred helmets the HUD readouts that he was reading would have been expected. This wasn?t the case though for Laz. The others had labeled him Lazarus, jokingly at first calling him the Lazarus Man because of all the artificial components that made up his body.

He wasn?t the first man to be augmented by the corps, and likely not the last. The reasons behind it were necessary though. The name fit because clinically he had been dead when they started their experimentation on his body. The others joked at his expense, he didn?t mind really they were the closest thing he had to family. In a way they defined him much more than the name he could no longer remember. His file said he was orphan, he knew because he had hacked it not long after being cleared for duty. His creators mistook his clinical disregard for emotion as a lack of motivation. Nothing could have been further from the truth though.

Curiosity had been the driving factor in much of his career with the Corps. Had he been whole, and perhaps more expressive in his desires, he may have been promoted. Instead he found himself second in command of a unit of misfits, which turned out to be more kindred souls than anything else. He often found himself at the mercy of the banter between the gunnery sergeant and the specialist, though the captain would intervene whenever she thought it was getting to disruptive. Much of what they said he supposed was funny, he might have laughed had he seen the logic of such a reaction. He fell short there though and the ribbings fell on the perfect straight man.

That was off duty though. When they were on, he was their eyes and ears. They listened and adhered to his words because to not do so meant catastrophic failure, or worse. Sparks had been their previous Psi Ops man. He had run with them for a short time before running up against something that had broken his mind. If Laz had been put to the question he would have easily assigned the problem to the serum provided by project Dominion. Side effects were rampant through his little squad. He kept an eye to the reports going up the chain as well. Sledge was their newest member, came out of Psi Ops too. The regulations for clandestine squadrons like the Outsiders were clearly stated. An outfit will contain no less than one special operative from Psionic Operations Division. Laz wondered if the telepath knew that this was the reason he would call him their pod person.

Lee was on over watch duty her position was close to his, he could have been anywhere and done the same job. Simple enough to have a lock down on all com traffic in and out of the facility. The remote access granted by Sledge to visual data was giving him all the information he needed. Karl was sitting back on this his job was to maintain route security. To Karl that meant rig everything to blow up via remote control. He liked to cut it close too as far as Laz was concerned. He figured the man was doing some kind of math for the Directional Specific Remote Detonator. An acronym that the big man had come up with in his own. The device was placed on the rear of whatever vehicle the man had and was constantly triggered. The vehicle passes by a placed charge and detonates cutting off pursuit. Laz had tried to point out the flaws with the idea. Karl would simply stare at him for a moment and then let out a laugh.

The setup was simple, Hel and Sledge find ways in, Laz man?s the computers and makes sure that no one realizes what is happening until the team is safe. He had designed the loops to reflect as many empty corridors as was possible. Where this wasn?t possible he did try to get entire segments of data. He recorded the entire passage of a sentry in and out of camera range. No jumps to alert the man at the screens that he had even been there. Derrick would just have to wait for Laz to finish. Hel had signaled her readiness, and begun the upload from the computer room. Laz had been waiting for the data so that he could transmit it back to the Corps.

At least that was what he intended, what he did surprised him. He plugged a cable into the data port on his skull and accessed the computers before him. Communications to the team flashed up on the screen and were shut off completely. He accessed the frequency that Karl would be using and sent signals via the satellite uplink that he had intended for use with data transmission. The first explosions were heard very near the harbor. Lazarus was stuck inside of a body that no longer listened to him. He began to assess what was happening. He still had one arm that didn?t carry Corps tech within it. He accessed the feeds that were coming in from home and from the compound.

?Command code override? Where the hell did you come from?? He tried to unplug from the computer to do what he could to save his team. The sounds of gunfire nearby had him feeling pressed for time. He could tell it was from Lee?s position. Laz took drew his ka-bar from the sheath at his hip and cut the cable connecting him to the computer. He took stock of the situation with his team, Lee was under assault from unknown assailants. Karl was dealing with a bucket load of ordinance that seemed to be going off randomly. Sledge and Hel were deep inside the compound. He couldn?t communicate with any of them. That was when he heard Lee?s voice, or what the others would take for Lee. He knew better though. He had enough voice recordings of all of them to know exactly what was going on. He sent out a signal to the cameras to begin a recording sequence again certain that Lee would want him to get the deep cover agent out before dealing with the obvious.

He turned to see a dark haired figure moving down the hallway. For the fleeting moment he read it peripherally he was relieved. ?Lee?thank god?" Scans of the biometrics had alarms going off in his head. This person who looked like Lee was clearly not her. ?Hel, you are way out of position here.?

Her coms were operating normally it seemed as she told Derrick that Lee had been killed, and ordered him to the secondary extraction. Lazarus had a strange heavy pulling in the middle of his chest that he couldn?t easily identify. He knew at a moment?s thought exactly how long it would take Derrick to get to his exit point. He triggered an automated countdown of that final loop and turned on Hel drawing and?darkness.

The run had started smoothly enough. They all knew what they had to do for this extraction. Yet it was too pat. Sif knew the where and when, but she was iffy on the why. Hel could not shake the feeling that something was not right. Even Nemesis was nervous and on edge. Maybe it was her nerves, but with recent developments between them... Then there was the complete lack of evidence to support the corruption accusation. That didn?t help the nerves.

A couple of weeks prior to this, Nemesis and Hel had started a relationship. That was after stopping an assassin that had drugged him. She had been faced with a gunny rambling that he wanted a chance with her. About the closest one could get to ?In Vino Veritas.? It was bittersweet. She had wanted that chance too but also wanted things to be serious between them.

She smiled at the chatter on the com as the team began to move into position. Hel was a chameleon between her skills and an ability she like to keep on the down low. She could blend in with the scenery and assume the role needed. Hearing Nemesis? chuckle over the wave kept her going.

?Hel, in position.? She murmured coolly into her mic. The others might not trust her, but she would not let them down?

That was until she jacked into the panel to gain access. The voice of Control was a shock to her senses. Remember, you are mine, my Hellion. Suddenly her body seemingly froze. Then her body started moving of it?s own volition and typed in a code to trigger a silent alarm. She started screaming in denial as her body was moving towards Lazarus? position. She tried to fight the commands, to warn the others? She heard herself give the order to Sledge to withdraw knowing it was a trap.

She was crying as she heard them corner Nemesis and Sif. The command kept her moving towards Lazarus. Then she hard that voice in her comm? I am very disappointed in you, my Hellion. Control said cruelly. This is the price you will pay for defying me with that idiot.

She could not stop herself from using the same tactic on Lazarus. She knew he would be able to counter it given time, but it was enough to ensure that Control got his way.

The command suddenly released and she dropped to her knees crying for the first time in her life. The realization that Control had used her to rip the team apart was lost in the pain of betraying Nemesis. She loved the Gunny and had been the instrument to destroy everything he held dear. She felt hands grab at her arms and place her in restraints. She did not resist as she was brought before Control.

?A pity, my Hellion. Yet, you can redeem yourself.? Control mused as I was forced to my knees before him. ?Nemesis and the others are in custody. Your actions will determine if your lover continues to breath.?

She looked up at him with all the hatred she felt in that moment. It buried a small glimmer of hope. Nemesis was alive?

?Alright, you sadistic sonuva bitch.? She spat out angrily. She would do anything for her Nemesis. Control had won this skirmish but the war was just beginning.

Karl Turo

Karl Turo, code named Nemesis:

The large man in the mirror fit the name, dark skinned and bald he practically bristled with weaponry. His pack was full of some nasty surprises for any that might try to take him. Claymore mines were new to his stash and he carried them even though he was sure that he wouldn?t need them on this outing. Karl was covering the extraction route his shaped charges had limited traffic between him and the chateau. It wasn?t unusual for him to fulfill this role. It hadn?t happened for some time, the last mission had needed walls breeched and heavy armor taken out. The team knew where to turn for that kind of work. If it could blow up, Karl made it his own.

The chatter on the radio had him laughing; it was always interesting when the tin man and the pretty boy went at it. Karl was still chuckling to himself even after Lee had told them to quit. He had switched to PTT mode so that he would need to activate the button in order to transmit. Delia had hit her position first. The others didn?t know her quite like he did, Karl could hear the laughter in her. She had started to come out from behind those walls. True there had been a lot of coaxing on his end but their relationship was still secret for now.

The explosions started softly at first, they moved slowly closer. Karl recognized the sound they were his ordinance going off in the places he had planted. Worse than that was the fact that they were travelling in the wrong direction. ?What the?? He started to move, there was obviously something wrong. He triggered the mic and spoke quickly. ?Sif?it?s Nemesis?we have a problem?? He released the button and heard only static. His coms were down, jammed most likely and the path out was disappearing. Karl kept trying to raise someone, anyone.

?Sledge?Laz? Hel?come on baby girl talk to me.? Karl had jumped into the sedan he had requisitioned from a very helpful citizen who had left it parked for him. He still hadn?t powered his transmitter to trigger those remotes. They were coming anyway, Karl crashed the gate and finally got something on his coms.

?She?s dead Sledge, they hit her position and leveled everything that moved. Proceed to secondary extraction point. I can see the others positions, they are pinned down. That?s an order Specialist.? It was Hel?his Deals and she was lying she had no visual on him. Karl was about to say something when he heard a sound that had him scrambling. The pack he wore clicked and began to whine. He knew the sound of a charging capacitor; he also knew exactly how long he had before the pack went off in a very noisy way. He had no idea what had turned them on or why, but if he didn?t bail he was going to fall victim to some of his favorite toys. The door handle was pulled and Karl was rolling across the ground. He felt the first break when he hit. His arm was on fire, and he couldn?t move it. He stood and started to run trying to distance himself from the vehicle. The last thing he remembered before waking up in a hospital shackled to the bed and surrounded by security was that he lost his footing. At least in a manner of speaking he had. The shockwave lifted him up and propelled him bodily against the compounds outer fortifying wall.

Karl hurt everywhere, but according to the doctor ?those enhance reflexes and strength had cushioned most of the injury?. Karl translated that to otherwise he would be dead. He could still hear clearly in his head Hel ordering Sledge out. The guard had given in to his only request, on the table over his chest a picture leaned. One heartfelt moment between Karl and Delia captured in a booth down at the carnival.

Karl couldn?t look away from the picture. He spoke to it softly, or rather he spoke to the woman portrayed there. ?How could you do that Deals? I guess you duped me good baby girl?I really thought you cared.?
