They were all arms and legs, Derrick didn?t want to untangle from her. He knew that she was warm against him, and that her long hair tickled at his shoulder where it touched him. This is what brought him awake, that unfamiliar presence in front of him, sharing what little space there was on the bed in his apartment. He wouldn?t change places with the previous night though, alone was still alone even if it was stretched fully across the mattress. It wasn?t Lorna?s first visit here, though this would be the first time she stayed all night. It had been his request, that was important, or it was to him.

Derrick had nothing to prove, not to Lorna or himself, not even to the great Magneto her father. The flirtation had begun with him flaunting it before Max, but in truth that had been a way to get her attention. He had been looking for a little fun, how was he to know she would become so important to him? Laying there in the darkness his fingers playing across her bare skin he thought on his motives. That he could fall for her was becoming more obvious to him, he supposed there might even be an argument that said he already had fallen. He didn?t know.

Was it possible to simply need someone with you badly and not have fallen? He didn?t know that either. He had nothing to base it against. This had started like so many other times, a bit of fun perhaps a night together. So why had he needed to find her so often since that day? Need was the key wasn?t it? She had crept into his thoughts so often over the past weeks that he no longer remembered what a day without thinking of her was like. Stay he had asked her, and she had said she wanted to. Now he wondered if his attempt to make her happy backfired. The flutter in his chest at her agreement was should have told him that he had wanted it as much as she did.

Derrick used his chin to move the hair away from her neck. He bestowed soft kisses in the darkness. The thought that it may wake her flashed momentarily across his mind. It was replaced almost immediately by the hope that it would. The night may have been made for sleeping but tonight was meant for the two of them. He tightened his grip on her, lips tracing along her shoulder. Derrick could only hope Lorna took it for what it was. Words whispered forth from him to convey his thoughts. ?Why do I need you so much Lorna??

The house was empty, or had been til he arrived. It had been a matter of time before the two of them would be forced to separate. Derrick pushed through the door and began the tedious work of straightening up the place. The dishes were put into the washer and run last night?s wine bottle was pitched into the trash. He didn't particularly like doing the household chores. In fact he had hired a housekeeper once. She had shacked up with the building's owner who had put an end to that association. He worked on the less desirable options first, wiping down the counters mopping the floor. After the kitchen he tackled the bathroom. It didn't require much effort; Derrick didn't spend much time in the apartment. The vacuum was run through the living room and along the furniture as well.

The bedroom was a different story, Derrick couldn?t bring himself to strip the bed though he knew it could use it. The easy stuff was done, vacuum the floor, then straighten the dresser. He opened the top drawer to a sea of underwear and socks. Derrick began to remove pieces of clothing from that drawer and take them to the nightstand. The closet door was opened then, outfits were pushed to the side and a space opened up. He had a lot of black in there he noticed, not that he hadn?t known that already but it really hit him in that moment exactly how dark his outfits had become. He looked back to the bed, he could see her there in his mind. The pillow still held the indentation of her head. He was fairly certain that he would find stray green hairs on that pillow if he were to search.

With great reluctance he stripped away the sheets and blankets redressing the bed in red. The blankets were sent down the laundry chute. She would be here soon?or at least he hoped it would be soon.

He wasn't taking assignments. Derrick knew it was too dangerous to try and keep that end of the business going when there were so many other factors involved in his life now. The appearance of Mileena had been odd enough, but the others weren't far behind. He should have known things would get complicated.

Hel, Delia Royalston...she had to be the biggest shock. At first Derrick had wanted to kill her. He had been trying to do just that when the trigger of his gun refused to pull. He knew without asking that Lorna was responsible for that act. She saved him from feeling a loss he wouldn't have expected. That from Karl who had trained his gun on Derrick.

Still it had been the right thing not to shoot. Derrick wasn't overly sure why there had been a need to use Hel that way. Course he also didn't realize she was more than that iceberg she showed everyone. Everyone except Karl it seemed. It hadn't occurred to him then that she and he might be together. He supposed if he thought of it the clues were obvious. There was a point that the banter became different. He thought perhaps that was her way of deciding to try and fit in...and maybe it was.

Dark eyes closed in the night. He didn't know why he couldn't sleep. It didn't happen often. Once he would have gotten up and went into town to talk a little crap to one of the inn goers. That need had left him some months ago. He turned and curled into the woman next to him letting his eyes open slolwy. He may not be able to sleep but he could watch her do so and be quite content. He had fallen in love with the color green, it had snuck up and surrounded him like a python. It had squeezed the old life from his body and opened him up to this new feeling he had inside.

Forget watching her sleep...He was tempted to insert himself into her dreams but that was beyond his training. The day might come when he needed to do just that for someone. Now all he needed were those green eyes on his face. Lorna was a light sleeper, from training or nature he couldn't guess. Often he found her behind him on one of his midnight stalks about the apartment. On those occasions he had never meant to waken her. Tonight it would be an advantage.

Derrick leaned in close, his lips as close as they could be to hers without touching. He could feel her body heat across that scant distance. The impish gleam to his eye would be the first thing she saw when he closed the minor gap betwen them.

Sledge, he still liked the name. It still fit for the type of work he preferred. Whatever else happened that much remained true. Money used to drive him, an incessant need to accumulate more of it. In the end it still did, but the reasons differed. Once it had been money for the sake of money. Now he just needed it to keep up appearances. Hard to say now if it was a want or a need. Harder still to give up completely.

He'd laid low, perhaps too low but when you have a reputation sometimes you need to disappear for a while. He'd dropped out of sight, but not communications. He checked in now and again looking for an assignment from The Outsiders. They obliged him quite often, but their needs were information and lately he just wanted to gun down anything that posed a threat to himself, to them, to her.

She could handle herself. He knew that in his head, knew that it was likely she was better equipped to do so than he was. Where he was perhaps better equipped was in his ruthlessness. Better dead and accounted for than left alive to trouble him later. The pair of nine millimeter Glock pistols were present now, he couldn't remember a time when they were ever far from him. It was true that sometimes in this place pistols weren't enough, so he'd had altered ammo created.

There were a lot of vampires in Rhydin, a lot of were creatures too. UV capsules for one, mercury for the other. He had to pay extra for both, but his quicksilver supplier always charged him different rates. The man was going mad with his exposure to the heavy metal.

He had other beauties too, his belt had compartments all the way around with magazines filled with one kind of ammo or another. Best to be prepared for as many things as possible right? As dangerous as they were though, it was his mind that gave him the edge in most cases. The ability to appear as anyone, or as nothing at all. To be all but invisible to any mind he was close to. He still got the headaches though, Derrick's mind was evolving, something that had been suppressed for so long was now out of control.

The barriers had come down, and nearly left him mindless. Was that the point of his anger? He couldn't decide if he was angrier that they had been taken away or if it was that they existed in the first place? Was there a place in the world for him this way? He couldn't guarantee the safety of his friends, so he stayed away. She wouldn't let him though, not from her.

The gun was in his hand and the bullet flying towards its target. Before it had hit he'd already put re-holstered and turned his way down a blind alley. It wouldn't have mattered, no one saw him. No one ever did.
