Topic: One Plain Letter

The Lanesborough's best delivery boy was surprisingly young, spritely, and nearly too eager to earn his keep. Upon his shoulders, his glad Sisyphus shoulders, he bore the weight of the world's lettered correspondance. Gravely, and with solemn love, he delivered his messages.

Sometimes, mailboxes would not do, and he would force extra air into his lungs so that his gaunt frame might swell and paint him as dignified as he addressed recipients, or their servants, directly. The tingle of excitement was unbearable as the boy came upon his destinations. The tips he often received were utterly devalued in contrast to the brushing he did against the elbows of the revered, the great and tall and worldly.

Isis Manor was not the grandest of estates that he'd visited, and yet it was no landmark at which to scoff. As he approached the door, his careful instructions were revisited, the rattling voice of Daniel echoing within his skull. This one is important, and must be delivered in person!

Skin & bones for knuckles rapped politely. And he waited, determined to stay as long as was necessary.

Erin was home alone. Which had been a rarity as of late, as she had taken to spending days and even nights at the store. She was dressed up, as well... getting ready to meet the caterers for her upcoming luncheon. Hair pinned up, pencil skirt, and a white button down.

Quick stockinged feet too her to door and she did a quick peek in the peephole before pulling it open. Of course she had her amulet in hand. Just in case.

The boy would see a smiling face, freshly washed and still without makeup. The small woman looked up at him with side almost green eyes.

"Hello there, young man. How can I help you?"

The boy's chest puffed, as rehearsed a thousand times before, and he gave the small woman a grave (but always respectul) look. He ignored her graceful limbs, which seemed too lovely. After all, the boy was a boy beneath his uniform.

"Are you Mrs. de Vernon? I have a very important letter that must be delivered!"

"Of course I am." An easy smile delivered to the boy. She reached out a hand for the letter.

"And where is it from?" She was really just curious. RSVPs had been coming in lately, and it wasn't rare for letters to be coming via messenger during the days. Her head tilted, knocking some hair loose and over her shoulder.

The letter was relinquished only when the woman confirmed that she was the wife of the man who must receive his package. With a gently-dipped bow, he replied to her question.

"The Lanesborough Hotel, miss. If you won't be needing me further, I must get back."

He lifted himself from his bow and gave her a nod, hoping that she was satisfied. He had many other letters to deliver, and the sun only remained in the sky for so long.

"Thank you." She withdrew a nice amount of silver and tipped the boy. She knew the name of that hotel, and it made her hands shake a little. What could be in that letter? Her bottom lip was taken into her mouth as she closed the door. A step back, and then another.

Erin stared at that envelope as if it were on fire. As if it would burn her hands. It killed her to open it in the house, but hiding would make it worse, wouldn't it? A long ragged intake of breath as she peeled back the flap.

Why had Gideon written her? She hadn't seen him in so long.. and truth be told was starting to enjoy things that way. Even the name of his hotel brought a wave of rage and remorse that could not be denied. Removing the letter from the envelope, her shaking hands struggled to unfold it.

It took her a moment to realize that the script there was not familiar....

Dearest Sebastian,

It occurred to me that I rather rudely ignored your dinner invitation in my reply to your letter. I suppose I was too excited by the arrival of your note! I've sent a swift delivery boy to make amends, and to let you know that I would be happy to meet with you under such circumstances.

Please send word so that I know where you'd like to meet.

Warmly yours,
Illy

Blink. And then another.

"Dearest Sebastian"?

She read it once. Then again. Then once more. It seemed innocent enough....right?

There was a little voice in her that kept reading the note outloud... dinner? Dinner was such a date time.. and the special messenger. She kept chewing on her bottom lip, shifting her weight from one of foot to another.

She was being ridiculous.

That she knew... of course. She had plenty of male friends. She had plenty of male friends she would say much worse than this to. But there was that nagging feeling somewhere inside of her. Just the way he talked about her... and under what circumstances?

Erin was full of uncertainty.

Sure, it was mostly unfounded. She was sure of that... but lately she had been so insecure. So certain that he was going to leave her for a million different reasons... and this. This "dearest", dinner, excited by his note business... it unnerved her.

Erin placed the letter back in the envelope and left it on the table by the door. The place for new mail. No need to mention it. No need to cue Bastian in to her insanity. Insecurity. She would just see if he'd mention it... Cause really, who was she to talk?

Trust is a vital part of marriage.

So when Sebastian came home that evening, he went about the repetetive motions of struggling with the door lock, hanging up his jacket, tossing his keys on the table....

And that was when he noticed it. The mail - more importantly, the letter. It was plain and opened, but if it was in this spot, it was to be read. He swiped it off the little table and kicked off his boots before moving into the livingroom to sit by the fire.

"Erin?" He called out, somewhat distractedly due to the fact that he was in the process of pulling out the letter. He was curious of it's contents, but equally curious where the love of his life was. Nothing's better than getting a hug and a kiss when you get home from work.

Settling himself onto the couch with a loud huff, Bastian propped his feet up on the coffee table and unfolded the letter. He scanned the paper quickly, smiled and then went back to read the letter as a whole. It's contents made him grin. Once again, the boy's mind began to wander; dreaming up places of where they could meet. It was a pity it wasn't spring. He'd liked to have taken her to an orchard where they could sit beneath a blossoming cherry tree. He loved the out-of-doors and everything nature had to offer. It was so inspiring....

But that wouldn't do. It was the dead of winter! Hmm where could they go?

Erin heard Bastian come in the door and move into the Drawing Room from her craft room. A push open of the door and soft steps down the stairs, as not to be noticed. She stood in the hall a moment, watching him read the letter. Head tilted.

It was like she had the angel/devil thing going on. The angel was telling her to trust him. To stop being stupid. To push all the silly insecurities away before they ate her up from the inside. But the devil.... oh, the devil! It was telling her to be careful. Not to get hurt again... that she should think something of this... that the look on his face meant something. That he used to look at her like that....

She shook her head, messing up her short hair. A purse of her lips and she closed her eyes, counting to three. There. Bad thoughts gone. A smile reappeared and she walked straight into the drawing room.

"You called?" Head tilted to look at him.

"Hey Sweetheart!" Bastian looked up, still grinning and waved her over. He didn't move from the couch, because he was lazy, and simply opened his arms for a hug. "Sit with me. Warm me up, hm?"

The letter was in one of his hands. Obviously not hiding it. Nor would he bring it up if she obviously read it. In Bastian's mind, there was nothing wrong with meeting his professor for dinner so she could read some of his work. Why would he wonder what Erin's reaction would be?

And since she had killed the little devil on her shoulder... with a hatchet... she didn't even bother to bring up the letter. Just smiled and settled into his lap.

They would have to go out to dinner tonight... Erin's latest experiment in the kitchen having not gone so well and Ivy's absence starting to wear on the nutritional well being at Isis Manor.

So, they'd only sit there by the fire for a short while. Probably speak of nothing of note, and then head to the market for dinner(almost surely something unhealthy).
