Topic: A Picnic That Was No Picnic

Gavilean and Des Starfare road their horses out of Rhy'Din with a full picnic basket packed. They needed a break from the city, and a picnic seemed to be just the thing on this fine summer day. This time, instead of picnicking at Pine Ridge in Westridge, they decided to just take a ride out of town and into the woods to the north and west of the city.

They left over an hour before midday, and by noon they were well out of town and off the main road. They rode on narrow dirt paths through beautiful forested areas filled with ferns, rhododendrons, and wildflowers. Animal life was plentiful. There were beautiful outcroppings of granite that created interesting shapes of stone. The King and Queen of Westridge came to an opening within a wide circle of oak, elm and hickory. It looked like the perfect place for a picnic, and it was not long before Des and Gav had the picnic blanket laid out, food on the plates, and wine in their mugs.

Des was reclining, propped up on one elbow across from Gav, basking in the warm glow of the love that they shared as well as the beauty of the day. She had been looking forward to escaping the rush and hassle of their lives in town every since they had spoken a couple of days ago about this outing. So far it had fulfilled all the promise that had beckoned them from the city streets out into the forest on the lower reaches of the mountain that loomed over the city of RhyDin.

Gav raised his glass to Des and smiled, "To you, my most beautiful wife whom I love with all my heart. Every day you make me the most happy man alive."

Her eyes sparkled with delight at the toast as she lifted her mug to tap it lightly against his. "To you, my most scrumptious TDMF male husband whom I love with all my heart. Everyday you too make me the most happy woman alive." Des smiled as she took a sip of wine.

Gavilean sipped his wine, then took out the food - fried chicken, potato salad, corn on the cob that was cooked and wrapped to stay warm, pickled vegetables and assorted condiments. "This looks so good, Baby! I'm starving!" He leaned back against Des' legs and began to go to work on the food.

Food! Des was always starving these days and she did not hesitate to dig into the feast that was laid out on the blanket. A piece of chicken cooked to perfection by their staff was devoured as well as a helping of the salad and several choice vegetables before she took another swallow of wine to wash it all down. "Mmmmm I do so love our cook Babe. I'm thinking we should give them a raise. Maybe a nice little manor house too all their own. But wait! No then they would probably leave us. Just a raise not their own home." She leaned forward to brush the hair back from his shoulder closest to her and placed a kiss to the corner of his mouth with a grin.

Gavilean returned her kiss while laughing up a storm at the way Tera was wolfing down the food and talking. She was so dear. Everything about her just made him love her more and more. She was his life. Without her he would dry up and die. He took a pickle and crawled over her and put it to her lips. "I hear that pregnant women are suppose to like pickles and ice cream. You eat plenty of ice cream; that's for sure! But, now you should have your pickles!" He was chuckling as he teased her.

Des was laughing herself at his playfulness. She loved their time together and oh how she loved him heart and soul with everything that she was and ever would be in this life and any other. She especially loved how he teased her but she did not like pickles. Not even her pregnancy had induced her to crave one, at least not yet and here was one up close and personal. The cowgirl Queen squirmed in an attempt to distance herself from the harmless vegetable. "Eeep! No pickles Babe! Not with my ice cream or without it!"

"Oh...c'mon, baby. It's tradition! Pickles are known to help with childbirth. You see, babies hate pickles, so when the momma eats pickles, it makes the babies just want to escape and they get birthed right on time. I got that from a very reliable source!" He bit his lower lip to keep from smiling too much.

Horrified navy blue eyes flew wide and sought out cobalt as she placed her palms flat on the blanket and scooted her way out from beneath him. Her mouth open in a little "O". "You'll have to catch me first Babe! I ain't eatin' no pickles!" She was on her feet fast as can be. "This here little one can just stay right where they are!" Des threw Gav a sassy grin in an invitation to play as she slowly backed away from the blanket further into the deep forest of the mountain.

Gav leapt gracefully to his feet. "Oh...so you think you can get away from an Elvin king in the woods? I move through the forests like a fish through water, dear. I'm afraid that this pickle is destined to be eaten by my sexy bride."

Des had not counted on that and it did give her pause in her steps. She stopped and planted both fists on shapely hips as she eyed him up. "Drop the weapon or face my wrath oh Great and Mighty High Elvin King of the Forest!" She called out to him with a twinkle in her eyes and grin upon lush lips. Of course she was referring to the hated pickle here, and for good measure she now spread her arms wide while pretending to be a Goddess that could call down upon him some kind of magical retribution in return should he chose to not heed her dire warning.

"Oh ho! So, my wife would pull down fire from heaven on her sweet husband, huh?! Well....," he bit off half the pickle and dropped the other half, "mayhaps a pickle kiss is just the thing you need!" He started to come at her, his cobalt blue eyes shining with mirth, his hair dancing on his shoulders in the slight breeze.

"Eeep! Not the dreaded weapon of death and destruction by a pickle kiss!" Doing her best not to laugh but failing as chuckles sounded in the cool depths of the forest where they lingered Des spun on a heel and took off running down the first game trail she spotted. She had no worry about her beloved husband keeping up with her at all. She knew that Gav could indeed move like the wind through the forest should he chose to but she was having far too much fun darting and weaving in between the huge trees that were large enough they had most likely stood silent sentinels for centuries. Perhaps they had even in their younger days watched as another loving couple played beneath their spreading branches yet had no way to tell of the things they had borne witness to.

Gavilean grinned as he followed her soundlessly on the game trail, sometimes darting to a tree that she was about to turn to. He would then slip around the far side of the tree and give her a chance to get ahead, for he sure loved looking at her beautiful bottom as she would run through the trees and around rock outcroppings. "You're not going to get away, my love! You are doomed for a pickle kiss!"

Des was so busy laughing and playfully calling taunts back to her beloved husband that as she rounded a bend in the trail she wasn't watching where she was going. She was paying more attention to trying to figure out which tree Gavilean would show up leaning against waiting for her at next then what was around the corner. Her first warning that all was not well was the low growl that had her head snapping around to see where it came from. Des gasped and skidded to a halt in the middle of the path where it intersected a second. There stood a wolf and it wasn't one that looked like a shape shifter to her, but she wasn't sure so she stood very still right where she was and kept her gaze upon the beast that was now snarling at her.

"Ummm... Babe? I know ya are right here somewhere close by. I have a tiny little problem here. Just a small one. Nothing to really worry about I'm thinking but ya might want to come this direction pretty fast!!!"

Gavilean had been intending to hide on Des and let her think that she had managed to escape him and his pickle kiss. He was away on the other side of a large outcropping of granite that had risen up in the midst of the trees, when something did not feel right to him. His Elvin senses peaked and the little hairs on the back of his neck stood up He climbed the outcropping, and on the opposite side, about twenty feet away, he saw a giant wood wolf poised on the rock, staring at Des, drool dripping from its mouth. There wasn't a moment to spare. "Haarrghhh!" Gav shouted to get the wolf's attention as he withdrew the Elvin sword that Des had given him.

As soon as Gav had the animal's attention Des went for her concealed daggers in a smooth motion that she had done hundreds of times before, it was second nature to come up with one in each hand ready to defend or fight herself. Her gaze went up to where the retired Warlord was with sword at the ready and her breath caught in throat as fear for him rose up only to be pushed back down as she glanced back to the salivating beast.

"Be careful Love mine! There might be more of them. Don't they travel in packs?" That had her looking for some high ground of her own and just there was a branch that she could reach so she quickly shoved her daggers back into her waistband and climbed up several feet from the path.

No sooner had Des mentioned the wood wolves traveling in packs when Gavilean caught a glimpse of one to his left and another coming up behind him. They were huge; at least half again the size of a normal wood wolf.

They attacked at the same time, as if coordinated by some foreign intelligence. The two beasts, each nearly 200 pounds, hit the Lord of Westridge at the same time. The three-inch fangs of the beast to the rear of Gavilean hit at his hamstring, while the wolf to his left went right for his throat. The charge came with such force that the king?s leg and head were literally ripped from his body.

Des screamed as she saw the wolves attack her husband, and without care for her own safety she leaped back to the dirt path, landing in a crouch with a grunt as all the breath left her lungs in a rush. She ran toward the outcropping waving both hands and yelling to get the wolves attention all the while unable to believe that this could possibly be happening. Not now when only moments before everything had been perfect in her life and in her world.

She tossed one dagger, catching it by the blade, took aim and still halting beside a tree threw it for one of the deadly creature's heart. The satisfying "thunk" as it sunk between ribs lasted only seconds as there were more of them, and she was down to one dagger and her belt with the concealed weapon it contained.

Tears were clouding her vision as she called her husband's name and tried to get a view of him from her lower position. "Gavilean! Babe! Honey! You can't be dead up there! I'm coming! Hold on!"

The body fell to the ground and was being torn in pieces, ripped apart by strong jaws of wolves that seemed to be driven mad. The attack quickly subsided in confusion. What the teeth were tearing apart was disappearing in front of them. Realization came too late. Gavilean's Elvin sword came down on the neck of the wolf that had been tearing at the king's own neck and head, severing the wolf's head from it body.

The wolves had attacked an image that Gav had left of himself, while he slipped just a foot or two aside, invisible as the wolves attacked the magical image. The second wolf recovered its senses and attacked Gavilean's booted leg. The Elvin sword came down hard, its point splitting backbone and severing the heart, dropping the wolf instantly. He then looked up, eyes searching for his love. "Des!"

The cowgirl Queen had killed the one down on the path with her and never had she heard such a beautiful thing in her entire life as Gav calling her name. "Babe, ya are alive! I seen them killing ya up there!"

Relief flooded her, weakening her knees so that she was slightly weaving as she moved over to the huge body of the wolf she had felled to retrieve her dagger. Des wiped off the blood on the fur before sliding both daggers back into concealment and looking around to find where her beloved husband was.

Spotting him up on the outcropping she yelled at him. "Don't ya never do a dang fool thing like that again love mine! Ya just stood there and let 'em kill ya! I outta kill ya myself! Don't ya know that I almost died too!"

It was her fear talking as she lit into him like no one's business with both hands on shapely hips and stark terror coloring the deep blue of eyes that were greedily roaming over him in frantic search of any possible injuries he might have. "Come on down here right now Babe! I need to hold you to make sure that ya ain't really hurt please."

Gavilean stood there, Elvin senses on alert, but he didn't feel any other danger nearby. He sheathed his sword and looked at Des, a weak smile on his lips, relieved that she was safe. He was weakened by the expenditure of both additive and subtractive magic, and he could feel toll that such magic had collected from his body. He limped over to her, "I'm sorry, babe. I didn't have time to think of what you'd be seeing. He slid down the outcropping and walked to her arms. "You okay, love?"

Des' hair was wild and shirt snagged from her bout with climbing the tree but aside from that she was fine. Loving arms wrapped around his waist as she hugged him fiercely while placing tiny kisses all over his face between words. "I'm... fine... you're... hurt... Babe!" She finally let go of him but only so she could get a better look at his leg as she had noticed him limping. "What happened to your leg love?"

He smiled, so thankful that she was alright. "The wolf bit my leg, darlin', but fortunately my boot took the brunt of it. I think it's just a bruise." It hurt like hell but he didn't think there was any puncture of the flesh.

"Those wolves, Des...it was not natural. You see the size of them? And they seemed controlled by some intelligence. It was just not natural."

She nodded to him as she glanced back up to his handsome face in time to catch the worry in his eyes that mirrored her own. Instinctively she shifted to stand a bit closer to him as navy blue roamed the forest that no longer seemed a place to laugh and play, but something a bit more dangerous perhaps, and definitely a place that wasn't as friendly.

"I saw that the two there with ya seemed to be working together Babe. Not natural for wood wolves. And the one down here, it was like it was trying to keep me from getting to ya to help ya. We are farther into the forest here than I have ever been before."

Gavilean had roamed the forests from Westridge to Rhy?Din for years, but he had never been in this particular area before. It was new to him, and while it had seemed perfectly normal just minutes before, they had three dead wood wolves as evidence that their time spent here was going to be no picnic.

Gavilean nodded against Des' head and just held her a bit longer. He was so angry with himself for taking their picnic in a strange forest so casually. He should have been more aware of what was going on around him. They should never have been surprised by the wolves.

"Yes, my love, I've not been here either, and I should have been more careful. Do you really think that wolf was trying to keep us separated? I suppose it's possible. It was like they were setting a trap for us."

Des shivered slightly in his embrace then shook her head slowly. "I don't know for sure Babe but it was just so strange that one minute it was just the one here on the path then suddenly there were the two up there attackin' ya like they knew what they was doin'... " Her voice trailed off into a shriek as both hands grabbed wildly for his shirt. The navy blue eyes locked on his face were again filled with a mixture of horror, disbelief and sheer terror as the ground beneath her feet began to shift.

"I think I should have just had that pickle kiss, Babe!" She swayed to and fro as the dirt path buckled then started to open beneath where they stood.

Once again the land had caught him by surprise. At first he thought that Des was slipping down to look at his leg, or to pick something up; then he realized that this was something out of their control. Des was being sucked into the earth, and he wasn't about to let her be taken away. He grasped her forearms with his hands to keep her from being swallowed by the land, then felt his own feet losing their ability to resist the pull.

"I've got you, Des!!" He wasn't about to let go, yet he immediately realized that there was nothing he could do - magic or otherwise - to keep them from being swallowed up. If they were going to die, it would be in each other's arms.

She caught hold of his wrists and clung for dear life - literally. Her mouth, nose, and eyes filling with dirt as they were pulled downward together. Her only real coherent thought was how much she loved him and that at least they were together. "I love you Gav!"

Through the earth they were sucked for what seemed like forever as her lungs began to burn for lack of air and her head to swim as blackness closed over her, yet still she held onto her beloved husband's wrists for as long as she still had the strength and conscious thought to control muscles.

Gavilean would not release Des even if a mountain fell upon them. They would die together. The strange thought came to him that no one would every know what happened to them. It would forever be a mystery throughout Rhy'Din and Westridge, around which a legend would be built. He wondered what story would circulate throughout the land as a proclaimed fact. He could do nothing to save her as blackness swallowed them. Once again he had failed to protect his wife. How could he be so ineffective with the one he loved so much? He would die with that question searing his mind.

The last thing Gavilean did before blacking out was to put a small shield of magic about them to protect them for as long as possible as the pressure of the earth increased about them. The expenditure of significant magic so soon after his encounter with the wolves depleted him of strength and darkness had overcome him. He laid there beneath Des, unconscious but breathing.

It might have been minutes or maybe hours later when Des came to consciousness with a low groan of pain. Her eyes opened cautiously to take in their surroundings. She didn?t move a muscle. She felt like she had been beaten by an Ogre with one of those clubs they loved to carry around, but somehow Gav had ensured when they landed, wherever it was they were, she was partially cushioned by his own body, so her pain wasn't as bad as it could have been for her - by no means.

The very first thing she did was listen for a second heartbeat to match hers within the eerie silence that was broken only by the steady drip of water somewhere. Tears of thankfulness filled her eyes when she heard that rhythmic sound that was as familiar to her as her own, but what to do now?

Her breath sounding harsh in the silence of what seemed to be a cave deep beneath the mountain, and she moaned softly while she ran her hands over the unconscious form of Gav, checking for any broken bones or other injuries. She had no idea about what she would have done has she found any broken bones, but she was sure she would have thought of something ? anything - to get them out of this.

She sat back on her heels at his side and felt completely at a loss as to where they could possibly be except beneath the mountain. Des didn't know if she was facing north, south, east, or west; and she just prayed that her beloved would know how to navigate a cave when he woke up. But what if he didn't wake up? Then what would she do? She knew that it would be up to her to go and find help for him, but she refused to just leave him here in this place all alone. No, that would never happen.

She gently stroked his cheek with one hand, "Babe, can you hear me? I'm going to try and find something to burn to make a fire. You need to rest to regain your strength. I promise I will not leave ya." She tore off the bottom of her shirt then unwound some thread from it and tied it onto Gav's foot, then carefully made her way along the cave's wall in search of something combustible.

She found some dried and broken roots, then used the thread to find her way back to where Gavilean was lying. She started a small fire and then snuggled up with Gav to help keep him warm while his body recovered from the strain he had put on it to shield her.

Gavilean laid there in the darkness of strange dreams as strength slowly returned to his body. He had no idea how long it had been since they had been in the sunlight of a beautiful afternoon. He awoke with a cough and could feel Des' body against him. Were they dead? Were they in a grave? Is this the land of the shades? He opened his eyes to the yellow glow of the fire and saw the ceiling of a cave. "Des?"

Tera lifted her head and brushed the hair back from his shoulder as she rose up on one elbow to gaze down upon his handsome features with hope lighting her navy blue eyes. Her voice was soft and loving, "Love mine...? I have been so worried." She leaned forward to kiss his lips tenderly, a sharing to reaffirm that they both were still alive, more gentle and loving than passionate.

He smiled at the kiss and spoke weakly, "If this is the afterlife, love, I think I'm going to like it." His hand brushed lovingly over her cheek, wiping off a smudge of dirt and pushing back her hair. "If it's not the afterlife, then do me a favor. Next time I offer you a pickle, just stick it in my Elvin ear. Okay?"

Des couldn't help but chuckle quietly as a little smile curved into place. He could make even the worst of circumstances seem not to terrible when they were together. She loved him so very much and was so relieved that he was able to joke about their dire situation. That enabled her to calm down and let go of the panic that had been threatening when she had awoke and found him unconscious with no way to tell for certain if he would ever again awaken.

Des tilted her head into the caress to her cheek then eased back and sat upright again, stifling another groan as muscles that had been abused protested the effort. "I have an idea Babe. We shall make a royal proclamation that anyone caught with pickles shall be hanged by the neck until they are dead." She darted a grin to him over her shoulder.

Gav smiled at her suggestion as he put his hands behind himself and pushed himself into a sitting position. "That should be a definite discouragement to pickle eating, although the cucumber growers might revolt on us." He took a good look around for the first time and said the obvious. "Well, looks like we're in a cave."

She nodded to him as she also looked around where they had ended up. "Yup, and from what I saw when I was looking for them stones, there are different tunnels all connected up down here too. I found one that had the prettiest crystals in it Babe. They were glowing but they didn't give off any heat so I didn't bring any of them back."

He listened to her speak, and then nodded with understanding. "You saw sun crystals, Des. Some call them fire stones, but as you say, they don't give off heat, so sun crystal is probably a better name. We can really use those." He began to try to slowly stand. Any other time he would have used magic for light, but right now he didn't have the strength. "Do you remember where they are?"

Immediately she was there with an arm around his waist to help him to his feet as best she could being much shorter and smaller than he was of stature. "Here Babe, be careful. I'm not so sure ya should be getting up just yet. Ya were out for a while and ya have used up a lot of your strength." Slender brows were drawn down into a slight frown of concern as she tried to catch his gaze with her own to reassure herself of his condition.

"They were just down this here tunnel and then one turn to the left along there. I used a thread like my Daddy taught me so as not to get lost in here when I took off."

She was right, he shouldn't be moving, yet he couldn't just lay there. "We can't waste time for me to recover, Des. We've got to get out of here. I hate to say this, but we may not be the only ones in these tunnels."

Gavilean

Date: 2006-08-13 20:20 EST
Des' eyes got wide for a second. Although they had a rather nasty encounter on the path, it hadn't occurred to her to be worried about anything but Gavilean's health until right now. "No. I refused to believe that there is anything but us in these here caves Babe. I refuse to admit that I have ever seen a cave troll in my life. There is no such thing as goblins either.

She scuffed out the remains of the fire she had built to keep them warm. ?Shall we love mine?" she added and smiled radiantly to him as she placed her arm around his waist and very slowly began to move toward where the sun crystals were located. Gav shook off the pain, but he couldn't shake off the weariness from such an expenditure of magic. Still, he moved along as Des led the way to the sun crystals. He knew his strength would return to him gradually.

Des was worried as never before, and she kept sneaking little glances over to the man that held not only her heart but all of her hopes and dreams in the palm of his hand. They moved slowly through the tunnel until they came to the first left. "It just a little farther along this way Babe." Already the faint glow could be seen from the cavern that was filled with the crystals as they approached the glow became bright as a summer day but the temperature remained unchanged.

The ceiling was high but the cavern itself was only about ten feet across and had three tunnels leading out of it besides the one they had entered through. "I don't know anything about Sun Crystals Babe. Are they good for anything besides light?"

Gavilean quickly pulled Des back and to the side of the wall as they came to the cavern with the sun crystals. "We must be careful," he whispered. "Yes they are good for something else. They attract cave dwellers like an oasis in a desert. These places are like oases of light, and creatures come here to drink of it."

Des clamped her lips shut on the squeak that tried to escape as she meet the wall of the cave beside him. Her heart pounding out a frantic rhythm as fear raced in an icy wave through her from head to toe. Her voice was barely a whisper as she looked around as best she could from where she had now plastered herself against the wall, making her body into a very small target. "What do ya mean Babe? Just let me get my daggers and I'll protect us." Very slowly she slid both daggers free and held them in a comfortable grip. She immediately felt better as the handles settled into her palms like long lost friends.

Gavilean had learned many things as King of Westridge. It was part of his teaching and often part of his personal experience. He put an arm protectively around Des and whispered in her ear. "Des, it's well known that giant cave spiders build their webs and nests in the ceiling recesses where the sun crystals grow. They use the light to attract unsuspecting creatures, and then they spring on them from the ceiling. We must be careful. We need one of those crystals, but getting it can be dangerous."

Her mouth went dry as she tired to speak while her knees literally went weak and she almost fell to the floor at the mention of spiders. Snakes and spiders - this day could not be happening to her. It was all a bad dream. They were actually back home in their bed sound asleep, safe and snuggled together with his arms around her and her head pillowed on his chest. "S?s?spider? Huge ones? Babe, I think I'm going to be sick."

He continued to whisper the unpleasant news into her ear, "I understand, baby, I hate spiders too. Look on the floor on the other side near that far opening."

On the floor was a bit of debris. "Those are the bones of their prey. Odds are very high that we'd find a nest directly above that area." He removed his sword. "I can knock a crystal off the ceiling, but as soon as I do, we're going to attract the spiders. You have to pick up the crystal quickly and race toward one of those openings."

Navy blue eyes went wide at the sight of the remains of the spiders? obvious feeding, and she shook her head rapidly in denial. "You'll never be able to run fast enough to get away from 'em Babe. I'll knock down the crystal and you get it and go." She extended her hand for the sword with a determined look on her face even though she was half scared to death.

What she said made sense but he didn't like it. "Des! Please...I'd rather see you take the crystal and run."

"And I love you and want both of us to get out of here alive." She placed her palm against his cheek and leaned up on tip toe to kiss him lovingly with a tender smile. "We can do this Gav. I know that we can. We are strong together. Nothing can defeat our will."

His lips pressed together in frustration. "Okay...but as soon as you loosen the crystal, run like hell for the opening. Okay?"

"I promise. Which opening are we going out of, Babe?" She glanced toward the ceiling to judge which crystal would be the closest to where they were going and where the best place to strike it would be to bring it down in one blow as she certainly didn't want to hang around any longer than they had to in this place.

He looked at the three openings. His Elvin senses peaked but he couldn't be sure. The middle of the three "felt" the best. "That one, love; over there." He pointed to the one in the middle. "Try to dislodge at least a 3" crystal."

Des nodded to him and unbuckled her belt then slid it free of the loops. Flicking the latch she uncoiled the deadly weapon and stepped away from the wall making sure her boots made no sound on the floor. Slowly at first, she began to swing the thin metallic weapon around herself in circle that widened as it picked up speed. The tip was a razor sharp triangular point that whirled around her in a protective figure eight formation as she continued to move across the floor toward the crystal she had targeted.

Concentrating all her attention upon keeping the weapon moving fluidly she increased the speed until it was a blur around her slender form then suddenly sent it shooting upwards to collide with one of the sun crystals where it attached to the ceiling, dislodging it neatly from its resting place.

Gavilean had followed behind her, giving her enough room to swing her wushu weapon while watching their rear. He trusted Des completely, and he knew that in his weakened state, she was much more likely to succeed than he was. He watched and saw her release the triangle-bladed weapon at the ceiling. It was like lightning crashing, and the crystal fell. Gav was there to catch it before it hit the stone floor.

Immediately they could hear a scratching sound of spiders being awakened and scurrying across the ceiling.

In the same smooth motion she drew the cord back through her hand until the weapon was once more close as she spun to face the scurrying sounds with her free hand resting on her beloved husband's back. "Run Babe! I'm with you!" she called out to Gav just as she caught sight of the first huge cave spider. "Oh Lordy be Babe, they are ugly!"

They were indeed ugly. They were as large as a good size pie plate, but their legs extended for three feet in all directions, providing excellent grip upon cave walls and ceilings. Their bodies looked like they were covered in black steel wool but with longer, sharper points sticking out like spikes. They had two sets of eyes. The first were huge and used only when walking in dark cave areas. The second were much smaller and were the only ones open when they were in the parts of the cave lighted with sun crystals. The long legs carried them at a remarkable speed across the cave.

"I'm going, Des! Hurry!! Stay right behind me!" He raced as fast as his hurt body would take him for the darkness of the middle opening.

Des scrambled backwards, protecting his back as Gav took the precious sun crystal, while the spiders advanced on them. The faint whirring sound of her weapon as she sent it in carefully timed and aimed arcs out to chop off those long legs lost in the scurrying noise of the arachnids. She smiled with glee as a few of the spiders got caught by the razor sharp triangle blade at the end of the cord and were stilled forever as they fell in halves to the packed earthen floor. "Babe they can be killed at least!"

"Yes, Des...they can, but hurry! One bite will paralyze a person!" He reached the opening and turned with his own Elvin sword drawn. "Come! Hurry!"

"Eeep!!!" That was all it took. She no longer cared that her weapon was dropping them very effectively as it sang through the air of the cavern. Des glanced to make sure that her beloved husband had reached safety then spun in a deadly dance cutting down the nearest spiders and ran for the tunnel where he waited for her. "Let's go!"

When he was sure that they were safe from the cave spiders he turned and ran for the first fifty yards then stopped. "I have to rest a minute," he said while trying to catch his breath. "Besides, you don't want to travel too quickly through a cave. . . too many dangers." He leaned back against the wall and slid down.

Des had coiled up her weapon as she ran beside him. It felt strange to be able to keep up with him and brought home to her again just how off kilter things really were. She eased down beside him and drew one of her daggers then carefully sheathed her belt weapon in its place. "It is okay Babe. We will find our way out of here. I have faith in us."

She really did trust that they would get through this, although she honestly had no idea how they were going to manage it since at the moment things were definitely looking exceedingly grim. It was hard to stay positive but she knew that if she gave up hope then that would be the beginning of the end for certain, so she was going to stay positive for as long as possible. She rested her head against his shoulder and put an arm around his waist. "I love you Gavilean Starfare. You are all that matters to me. As long as we are together then I am happy."

He was thinking that he was holding her back and that she should go on alone, but then she said those words and he knew he'd never get her to leave him behind. "I just need a minute, darlin'. We'll get out of here. I've been in worse situations than this, baby." He was trying to lift her spirits, but in reality he had no idea where they were going, other than that this tunnel felt right.

She smiled and rubbed her cheek to his shoulder. "We will just rest here for a little while then we will go on and see what there is to see up ahead there. Who knows Babe, there may be some underground pickle fields up there just waitin' to be discovered."

He laughed and kissed her cheek as she rested on his chest. "I love you, sweetheart. Forever and always and two days. And we're getting out of this."

Gav and Des held each other for several minutes, soaking in each other?s care and love. Gavilean was slowly regaining his strength, but they couldn't afford to stay in one place for very long with the sun crystal giving off its glow. "We should be going, Des. If we stay here, something worse than Cave Spiders might find us."

Des glanced around them at the tunnel they were resting in, then nodded to him. "I have no idea which direction we should go in, Babe. I vote we toss a coin." She felt better now that they had some light to see by but she didn't want to risk meeting up with more of those ugly huge spiders, so if they needed to be on the move she was ready.

"Well, love...." he pushed himself to a standing position, "I know we're not going back to the spiders. That leaves the only direction is down this tunnel. Some would argue that my Elvin senses are no more reliable than a flip of a coin, but they have served me well so far. I get the feeling that this is the way." He nodded down the tunnel toward the right. He looked at her and grinned, "Shall we put me to the test?"

"I trust ya with my life, Babe. I'm going with you." She smiled lovingly to him and rose to her feet then placed her hand in his and turned to the right. Taking a deep breath she began to walk slowly down the packed earthen floor while keeping an eye out for anything untoward. "What about the cave trolls Babe? What attracts them? Do ya know?" That had been crossing her mind and she was truly curious about them having seen a few in the Inn while tending bar.

He didn't look like he wanted to say, but she has asked a legitimate question. "What attracts them? Just being here, love. They have an excellent sense of smell and can detect a human at fifty yards, light or no light. So with the Cave Trolls, we might just as well keep the sun crystal out. Hopefully it would blind them for a second or two."

They turned right and continued down the tunnel, hurrying without running. The tunnel turned and twisted, and worse - it branched. At every branch Gav had to make a decision. After a half hour of travel they began to hear something up ahead. They stopped and listened. It was a continuous hissing sound.

"Then we will just keep moving fifty yards at a time Babe!" Des grinned to her beloved husband as she moved in perfect rhythm with him through the twists and turns doing her best to be as quiet as possible. Navy blues constantly sweeping the path before them in search of trolls, goblin, and upwards for the icky spiders just in case one decided it didn't need the light to draw prey to it. As soon as she heard the hissing sound she came to an abrupt halt and gave a tug to Gav's hand. "Snake!!!"

Gav immediately pulled out his sword and listened. The hissing was continuous. He looked at her, "I don't think that's a snake, love. Let's get closer."

As they walked closer the hiss became louder. Something else was happening. The tunnel was also growing continuously warmer. Des was reassured by his words but still she hated snakes, and so one of her daggers was in a hand as she advanced cautiously with him toward the sound. She half crouched down to make herself a smaller target while creeping forward this time mindful of having walked right into that nest of cave spiders blissfully unaware.

Her voice was a very low whisper and she leaned close to be heard above the hissing noise. "It better not be a snake, Babe, because I have had about enough of these here critter problems; but if it is, you slice it and I will stab it. Okay?"

He turned and looked into those navy blue eyes and nodded. "I'll slice...you dice."

They continued and turned left around a bend, and as they did, the wall took on a red glow and the heat increased rapidly. "We've got fire up ahead, darlin'. Let's look." He knew that if there was a fire, there would also be an updraft, an opening higher up.

Des couldn't help but grin to that while nodding, and then looked forward and moved ahead at his side and blinked at what she saw. "Oh Lordy be. Would ya look at that Babe. It ain't no snake, that is for sure." She didn't put her daggers away though as she was far too busy as her gaze rose upwards along the molten wall of rock that was on one side of them. The heat that radiated from it had her unconsciously tugging at her torn and dirty shirt as perspiration started to dot the surface of her skin.

Gav took the lead and they approached the molten wall. There eyes followed the flow and that?s when they noticed that the majority of the heat was coming from a wide crevice in the floor of a large open cavern. Gav walked to the edge and looked down. It must have been a five hundred foot drop to the flow of molten material at the bottom. Sweat was pouring off of him as he looked around for a way up.

"This heat has to be exiting from someplace, love." Then he saw it - an opening in the ceiling to some other level of the cavern. "There it is, darlin'. We just got to get up there, and unfortunately the way up seems to be on the other side of this crevice." He looked down this side of the crevice within the cavern and saw a narrow stone bridge that spanned the crevice. "I hate caves."

Des gasped as she saw just how narrow that stone bridge was and just how high above the molten lave flow it was to boot. "Oh, no. You have got to be kidding me, Babe. There has got to be another way around this here thing." But there wasn't and she knew it, and no amount of wishing would make another way appear. She was so afraid of heights that her palms were already sweating along with the rest of her body. "Well I guess standing here isn't going to get us over there is it love mine?" She put on a smile for man that she loved more than anything, then nodded to him as though to say it was okay and headed toward the bridge warily.

If they needed any encouragement to get across the stone bridge, they were about to get it. A small group of three Cave Trolls appeared at the other end of the cavern, but on their side of the crevice. Gavilean sensed them and turned to look. "Baby, I think we better hurry. . . .I mean...really hurry!"

Cave trolls were large, but they were not fast. They were about a hundred yards away and lumbering toward their prey with clubs in their hands.

Des tilted her head to the side inquisitively as suddenly Gav was in a hurry to get across the extremely narrow and very unsafe looking bridge. A little huff escaped as she spun on a heel to face him and give him a little piece of her mind about rushing her across this obstacle, one that she was not looking forward to facing and that she was doing her best to overcome her fear of. Then she caught sight of the trolls coming at them. "Ack! Babe! Trolls!" She froze in place with an arm outstretched pointing at the grey skinned creatures.

Gav grabbed her around the waist and pulled her toward the bridge. "I know, baby. I think they've seen us also." They reached the foot of the stone bridge. "I'll go first, hold my hand." It did not seem to be the loving thing to do, to leave Des closest to the trolls, but he had his Elvin sense and balance, and could easily navigate the narrow bridge. "If we can get across, this bridge just might save us, love."

They started out upon the bridge and had gone about twenty feet by the time the trolls made it to the bridge. Des actually moaned out loud as she took the first step on the bridge while clinging with both hands to one of Gav's. She trusted him completely though, and if he said this was the only way, and then this was the way she was going no matter what.

She was not staying with those nasty cave trolls that come all too close because she had stopped to gape and point. Now they were far too close to her for real comfort. As rapidly as he moved, she kept right up with him putting one foot carefully in front of the other on the narrow expanse of stone. "Umm Babe... I know ya are hurrying but if ya get us out of this I swear I will let ya kiss me with pickle breath."

He would have laughed if they weren't feeling the intense heat of the river of molten lava beneath them, five hundred feet below their bridge that was only a foot wide and sixty feet long across the crevice.

They were at the center of the bridge when the first troll started to move onto the bridge. Trolls were not engineered to cross on anything that was only a foot wide. The first two were fifteen feet out on the bridge when the one in front began to lose his balance. He wind milled his massive arms, hitting the one behind him who then lost his balance and grabbed for the one in front. It was two late for either of them. They fell from the bridge with horrific yells, and ten seconds later the red lava below burst into yellow flame where the two trolls entered. The third Cave Troll looked down at the demise of his two companions. His growl echoed throughout the cavern, but he did not dare to cross the bridge.

Tera winced as the horrid trolls fell to their deaths, having fallen prey to looking down when she shouldn't have. Des was all hunched up over, the hand she was holding in a death grip while making herself as small as possible in an attempt to get away from the waves of heat that were pulsing around them from the river of lava below them and her fear of being so high up on such a narrow strip of solid ground.

The echoes of their companion's growl thundered around her, feeling as though it too was buffeting her on the tiny bridge, but she held onto her beloved husband's hand and kept moving forward as quickly as they possibly could to get to the relative safety of the other side.

With the threat of the Cave Trolls gone, Gav could concentrate on the bridge and on keeping Des balanced behind him. It didn't take them too long to go the remaining twenty feet, and at last they were on the other side. From here Gav could see a break in the wall that led into a very small chamber. "Come, love...I think this is the way."

Inside that small out cove were stone steps that wound around the outer wall of what seemed to be a crudely made tower. "We've got to climb this, baby."

Des had lost the sense of time passing, and she was now operating on sheer will alone to put one foot in front of the other. She glanced upwards at the spiraling staircase that appeared to her in her exhausted state to go on for what looked like forever. "Okay Babe. We'll climb this and then everything will be all right again." In a daze she put one foot on the bottom step then placed a hand on the wall to balance herself, then began the climb.

He let Des climb first in case she might slip. As they climbed they had to keep leaning to the outside wall to keep balance and keep from falling. The stone steps were ancient and worn and crumbling in places. More than once Gav felt himself losing footing. The higher they climbed, the more lethal a fall became, until a fall became a certain death. They continued to make their way slowly upward, and as they did the air became cooler. "I think we're nearly there, my love. I can feel the air getting a lot cooler."

She was about ready to drop to her hands and knees and crawl the rest of the way. She was so tired by now her legs felt like rubber and lungs were burning for air as she panted quietly while being thankful that at last the air was cooling after the vicious heat from the molten river they had traversed above earlier. Her hair hung in tangles around her shoulders and down the length of her back, and she kept pushing it out of her face, being extremely disgusted with it for getting in her way.

The smooth surface of her skin felt as though it was crawling from the perspiration that had picked up dust from the cave, so that now she just wanted to stop and scratch like crazy. However, rather than indulge the itch, she just kept putting one foot in front of the other, each one stepping higher than the last with occasional glances over her shoulder to make sure that her beloved was still right there with her. "It's okay love mine. We are going to make it. Don't you worry none. We are just fine, Babe. You just keep on climbing with me."

Ordinarily, this would not have been that difficult for the Elvin king, but in his weakened state it took every once of his strength and every bit of his will power to keep climbing. None too soon he saw an edge of the tower up above. Then he saw Des move over the edge onto the stone floor of a chamber. He followed, placing his arms on the stone floor and struggling to pull himself up the last few steps and onto the floor.

He collapsed and laid on his back. "We made it, honey." He had no idea where the "it" was, but he felt they were back on the surface, or at least near it.

Des crawled over to sit beside Gav as she waited to catch her breath. She was exhausted, every muscle screaming a protest at the rough treatment her body has been through for the last Goddess only knew how many hours or even days.

She too felt that surely this place was different. The air here was cooler and it was lighter. They didn't need their crystal to see each other and their surroundings anymore but the prickling on her skin was no longer just the itch from the dirt and perspiration now it felt like it did when there was magic being worked around her. "Babe do ya feel that? I think something that we haven't seen yet is just up ahead. We better be careful still."

Gavilean touched Des' shoulder and then pushed himself to his knees and was quick to stand to his feet, sword in his hand. He nodded to her that he did indeed feel the magic. The Elves were very tuned to magic and what he felt was loud and clear. He reached down for her hand. "We better be very careful, baby. I'm not sure of the danger, but there is far more power here than down in the tunnels."

She nodded her agreement as she took his hand and got back to her feet. She swayed once but straightened her spine and brought her body back under her control to stand at her beloved husband's side ready to face down any danger together. She would not be weak and leave him to face it alone whatever it may be no matter the trials they had already faced.

Her will was much stronger than that and she would overcome this. Des drew a dagger from her boot and took her Whusu weapon in the other as she faced toward where the light was coming from. Then before she could speak the source of the power they could feel was in the cave with them.

Facing them, regally seated, was a white Spirit Tiger calmly regarding the couple with amber eyes that appeared to see into their very souls. He, for there was no mistaking the male aura around the powerful being, regarded them for several moments but it was clear that he posed no physical threat.

It was only a searching he did as though weighing and measuring their worthiness for something that only he knew the answer to. Des stood quietly and relaxed beneath the inspection feeling that there was no harm meant by the Spirit in their attention.

Gavilean felt the sense of awe and the sense of no immediate physical threat. He also realized that should the Spirit Tiger wish them hurt or dead, their weapons would have little effect in warding that off. He sheathed his sword and looked to Des to reassure her that their best choice right now, being totally exhausted, was to be submissive.

The High Elfin king took a step forward and bowed slowly to the Spirit Tiger. His voice was soft but firm, "We, the King and Queen of the land of Westridge, humbly stand before you in peace, begging your forgiveness for our unintended intrusion."

Des trusted Gav's instincts and decisions implicitly and followed his example by putting her weapons away then stepping forward to his side and bowing to the one studying them.

The tiger continued to regard them now as an Elder would then spoke in words that shimmered in the air between them. "It is no accident that you stand before me now King and Queen of Westridge. It was ordained long ago that this time of testing would come should your will be strong. Now you face the final testing or I will return you to RhyDin and this will be removed from your memory. The choice is yours. Make it now."

Gavilean looked to Des then back to the Spirit Tiger. They had journied outside of RhyDin merely to have a relaxing picnic. Since then they had been set upon by wood wolves, dropped through the earth, attacked by cave spiders and trolls, walked over a narrow bridge over molten rock, climbed a narrow stone stair, and now must make a life-changing decision.

How much more could they take this day? Gavilean turned to the woman he loved with all his heart and smiled. "I say we face the final testing. What do you think?"

Des turned from the Being to face her beloved husband who had only wanted a pickle kiss to begin with. She went up on tip toes kissing him lovingly then grinned to him as she slipped her hand into his and gave his hand a squeeze. "I don't want to forget a thing about this day with you love mine. I want to face the final test no matter what it is with you at my side. I know we can beat it together." She turned back to face the tiger and smiled to him. "Bring it on we are ready!"

The tiger was pleased and he nodded his head to them with a visible sparkle in the amber of his eyes at the exclamation of the female. "The final test is this. You must solve this riddle to open the sealed exit of the cave you are in now. 'The bow that has never shot a dragon holds the key.'"

Gavilean looked at the Spirit Tiger and repeated the riddle, "The bow that has never shot a dragon holds the key? Isn't there anything more? Is that all the clue we get?"

The white Spirit Tiger began to fade from sight and as he did so the cavern began to lighten further revealing colored square crystals all over the walls and floor. Some had words and others symbols. All of them were set in random patterns.

A waterfall that had been hidden from sight and sound before could now be seen with sunshine visible through it. A few of these crystals had pictures of colored dragons on them scattered around the walls. The tiger did not answer because a riddle was all the clue that everyone that had ever passed this way, or that ever would pass this way, would get.

Des gasped as she looked every which way trying to take it all in at once. "Babe! Look at this place. Isn't it beautiful!"

Gavilean stood there and took in all that was happening. "Yes, Des. It....is." He was slowly walking around, moving to the waterfall when he was suddenly stopped by some sort of force field. "Something is preventing us from getting any further, Des. The way out is blocked by a magic that is incredibly powerful."

He turned back toward Des and the colorful squares on the wall. "These words and symbols must mean something. I don't recognize the symbols. Look at these dragon pictures. They're beautiful." Each had a picture of a dragon that was slightly different, and each had a different color.

She was wandering around looking at all the beautifully crafted illustrations of the dragons. Her steps slightly dragging now that it appeared the physical danger was over and she didn't need to put up a front. "Mmhhmm Babe. All these here stones must have to do with that riddle and they must be our way out. But what the heck is a bow that never shot a dragon? I thought dragonslayers used lances to shoot dragons not bows." She was slightly confused as she ran her fingers over one of the blue dragons tracing the artwork before moving on to do the same to one of the purple ones.

"Sometimes they have these very large bows that shoot large shafts at dragons as they fly overhead. Maybe it's referring to that." He walked and around and began to press on the stones. "They seem to give a little. I wonder if we have to press them in a certain way?"

"That would make sense Babe like a code of some kind but where we can find the code? Maybe it is written on the floor here in these here words or symbols?" She started searching out the words the tiger had said on the words that were written on the stones on the floor but couldn't find the word 'bow' anywhere. All the others were there in one language or another she knew but not that one particular word.

Gavilean was pressing the pictures of the dragons in different orders. "Nothing. I don't know the solution, sweetheart. I've got to think. There is a key! The Spirit Tiger said, 'The bow that has never shot a dragon holds the key'. The bow holds the key. The bow also holds an arrow. An arrow could be a key!"

Tera Destre

Date: 2006-10-07 12:29 EST
Des was wandering around the cavern looking carefully at all the stones trying to puzzle out what the key could be when Gav mentioned the arrow. "An arrow! Babe there are arrows on some of these here stones look!" She pointed to one of the stones beside a drawing of a red dragon that was inscribed with an ornate arrow that was pointing toward the crystalline stone the dragon was depicted on.

Gavilean looked at it, but it didn't provide any obvious solution. "You're right Des. Maybe if we just pressed the ones with the arrows," he said as he tried pressing those stones. He tried different orders, he tried pressing more than one at a time, he looked at where the arrows were pointing and pressed those stones.

He sighed, "Nothing. Nothing is working, baby. All we have is a bunch of ridiculously colored dragons." He walked over to her, nearly too tired to even think. "I don't know what to do? Any ideas?"

She wrapped an arm around his waist and layed her head against his muscular chest to comfort both him and herself as she thought and thought turning the riddle every which way in her mind. "I thought sure the arrows were the key love mine. It makes sense from what the tiger said. ?The bow that never shot a dragon is the key.?"

Des sighed softly and glanced toward freedom. The direction where the waterfall was curtaining the entrance to the cavern. The sunlight was shining through it casting colors from where she was standing. She blinked then blinked again and shook her head then chuckled at herself but just in case she nudged her beloved husband and nodded toward the waterfall. "You don't think Babe... ?"

He looked to the waterfall and the way of their escape. He was so concentrating on the cascade of water and the sunlight beyond it, and the force of magic that kept them from reaching it, that at first he overlooked what she was referring to. Gav just nodded in resignation that they just might die here and said, "Aye, love, the rainbow looks lovely." He nuzzled his chin against her forehead. "RAINBOW! Des!! You're a genius! It's a bow that never shot a dragon!"

"You think so too love mine!?" Renewed energy at the possibility that they might have finally found the key to escape the cavern and pass the final test had her lifting her head and turning to look around at the walls and floor again. "If we push the ones with the right colors maybe we can get out!" She ran over and pushed the green one with the arrow beside it but nothing happened. Her shoulders slumped as she turned back to Gav. "Nonononono. This has to be it."

Tera Destre

Gavilean looked from the rainbow to the dragons and back, noticing that the rainbow was beginning to fade as the sun moved higher in the sky. It was then that he realized that they had been up all night long and it was now morning. "Des, remember the rainbow colors! See how it goes from a deep purple to blue to yellow to green to red. There is a pattern going from the inside of the bow to the outside. These dragons all have different colors. What if we pressed the stones in the order of the rainbow?"

Des glanced from the stones to Gav and back again then she nodded slowly as it all seemed to be making sense. "Yeah! All the colors of the dragon crystal stones with arrows pointing to them Babe! I think ya are right. Let's do it!" She pressed all the colors in the correct order that she was closest to then waited for him to press the ones by him. Her heart was pounding and palms were sweating as hope sprang to life. "Okay your turn love mine."

He picked up from where she left off. She had pressed the black dragon, the blue, and then the gold. Gav whispered the colors as he pressed the stones: "Green. . . red . . ." He looked at the other two, the silver and the white. "Black is no color, but white is a mixture of all colors. Thulin Nel had once told me that." So he pushed the silver dragon next, and then finally - the white.

Des ran over to stand beside her beloved husband as suddenly there were numerous scrapping noises with the shifting of all the colored dragon stones in sync. The beautifully illustrated crystalline stones swung outwards as though on invisible hinges as the final stone was pressed in the correct order. All was completely silent within the cavern as even the sound of the waterfall seemed to no longer be able to be heard now that the riddle had been unraveled.

Until the beating of tiny wings and the cheerful chirping of brightly colored dragonettes surrounded the exhausted couple in a myriad of sights and sounds where before there had been the total silence of cautious watchfulness that had held them so many times on this journey. As the newly released acrobatic fliers dipped and soared about the cavern the volume of the waterfall splashing at the entrance increased to a roaring much louder than before.

Waterfall

Exhaustion and excitement collided in a struggle to dominate the King and Queen of Westridge; but with the removal of the magical ward, the roar of the waterfall, and the sudden cool breeze sweeping through the cave, they found a second wind that enabled them to continue their journey back.

Gavilean took Des? hand and they walked to the waterfall, peering out the morning light from behind the rush of falling water, feeling the cool refreshing mist upon their faces. They cupped their hands and reached to collect some water and drank until they were refreshed. It was the first drink they had since falling through the earth nearly twenty hours earlier. They had water, but they still had no food. They needed to eat and rest if they were ever to make it home.

Gavilean tried to get a look over the edge to see how far the drop was. He couldn?t tell, but he knew if they jumped into the falls, they?d be killed in the rocks that were at least 150 feet below them. He turned to Des with hair and face soaking, ?Is this some kind of joke the Tiger is playing with us? We are set free just to be able to die in a watery fall rather than in a fiery pit?? He was exhausted and frustrated and at the end of his patience. He walked to Des and pulled her to his chest, holding her against his wet shirt, his hand grasped her head as he kissed her hair. ?I?m sorry, baby. I just don?t know what to do anymore. I?ve gone as far as. . .?

He looked over her head and saw the dragonettes circling against the opposite side of the wall that stretched behind the waterfall. A quick look and it appeared that the wall was solid and ended there, yet he noticed that dragonettes periodically disappeared and returned again.
?Des, look at that!? he said, pointing to the wall. ?There must be a way out.?

He moved ahead of her and as he approached the wall the dragonettes all disappeared behind it. From here he could see that it was an optical illusion that the wall was solid. In reality, two walls came together and there was a very narrow path between them.

This was their exit.

?Des, the dragonettes are showing us the route!?

Hope had once more returned. They followed the narrow stone ledge as it emerged beyond the waterfall and moved slowly downward as it twisted around the mountain. ?Be careful, Des. Don?t look down. Hug the wall.?

In single file with their bellies pressed to the side of the mountain, they slowly made their way around the mountain's stone face. The dragonettes continued to fly about 10 yards ahead of them as if encouraging them on and pointing out the way. In places the narrow ledge had broken away and they had to stretch their legs over the opening to get to the other side. In other places the gap was too large to straddle, but they found ways to traverse it using handholds and footholds in the rock wall they were facing.

They continued around the stone face of the mountain for an hour, although it seemed more like an entire day; and just as fatigue seemed surely to overtake them, the stone ledge became a dirt path, and the dirt path went from the exposed side of a mountain into a tree covered one.

Gavilean took Des into his arms and kissed her. She was so brave and never complained. In fact there were times along the ledge where she was encouraging him.

He wanted to rest, but the dragonettes seemed insistent that they continue their journey.

The Pine Path

The path was like a three-foot wide floor of a tunnel that was cut through the midst of solid pine. The scent was magnificent, and pine needles cushioned their steps. The needles also made the path slippery; and if they were to slide off the path, the treed side of the mountain dropped off so rapidly that it would be doubtful that even if they survived the fall by being caught by a tree trunk or root, that they would once again be able to climb their way back to the path.

For the next several hours they continued their walk along the narrow canopied path, occasionally getting glimpses of the magnificently lush mountain valley that they had emerged into. They had been struggling to survive for over 24 hours when the path came to an open space, and they couldn?t believe their eyes what lay before them.

http://www.geocities.com/flyguyii/trainingcenter.jpg

Set into the side of the mountain was something that looked like a dwelling or temple, or perhaps both. Gav smiled at Des, ?Look, darling. Perhaps there are people there who can help us.?

With new hope sprang new energy, and they picked up their pace, following the path that was now more exposed to the open sky and the view around them. It was then that they noticed that the dragonettes had departed. They had evidently done their job in guiding them to the mountainside retreat, and then left. Perhaps it was a ?thank you? for setting them free, or perhaps it was their 'assignment'.

Then dirt and rock path became wider and flatter as they drew near the buildings that were set into the side of the mountain. The Starfares could now walk side-by-side, holding hands and helping each other along. Their feet hurt, their bodies ached, and their stomachs were complaining for lack of anything to do for so long; but they continued to press forward.

The Mountainside Retreat

As they approached the buildings, they appeared much larger than they had when they first caught sight of them. In fact, it was a substantial series of buildings that appeared to have large common areas and many smaller ?apartments?. They came to a large, brown door and knocked upon it.

There was no answer.

After a series of knocks and waiting, Gav tried the door and found it to be open. He guessed that there was little need for locking a door in such a place as this. Anyone with the skills to reach it would not be discouraged by a simple lock upon a door.

They walked inside and found the building to be clean, sweet smelling, and with painted walls and polished wooden floors. The only thing the building didn?t have was occupants. It appeared to be totally deserted. Gav and Des walked through large, empty rooms, connected by windowed hallways, also with polished wooden floors.

They moved quickly through the hallways until they came upon the kitchen and dining room. Gav and Des went to work opening cupboards and closets, searching for food, but their exhilaration changed to disappointment when nothing was found. Everything was spotlessly clean as if some over-enthusiastic cleaning crew had come in and cleared the building from head to foot of everything that was not part of the walls and floors. They had a stove and water, pots and pans, but nothing to cook.

?Let?s continue looking,? Gav said with a shrug. ?If we find no food, we?ll hunt. If there?s nothing to hunt, I?ll find grubs and insects in the bark of the pines. We?ll survive, babe.?

They climbed stairs and found many bedrooms that appeared to be dormitory style rooms. They had made beds but empty shelves as if they were all waiting for the fall classes to begin and students to arrive. Gav and Des went back down to the first floor level and came upon a walkway ?bridge? that led from the main buildings to a private dwelling that was smaller and at a slightly higher level, set into the side of the mountain by itself.

The sun was soon to set over the mountains as they crossed the bridge and opened the door to this separate building.

As soon as they had stepped inside it was obvious that this was the dwelling of those who were in charge of this monastery or temple or whatever it was that they had been led to. It had the same polished wooden floors, but the walls were elegant and the rooms were cozy and with spectacular views.

More importantly at this point, this smaller dwelling had its own kitchen and dining room, and this time, to the thankful praises of the weary travelers, they found it well stocked with food.

Discovering Food

It had been a day and a half without sleep or food. The last meal they had was upon their picnic blanket, and that seemed like it must have been weeks ago. Finding the kitchen in this hillside dwelling brought hope once again that food would be found - something, anything. They entered the small kitchen and opened an old cupboard next to the sink and found it filled cans of stew, packages of jerky, coffee beans, flour, sugar, and other staples. In the refrigerator was a large round cheese that was sealed in red wax. There were bottles of wine lying upon their sides and packaged beef and pork, and a container of brown eggs. Gavilean smiled at Des and winked, "You hungry?"

Des pushed the messy tangle of hair back over her shoulder and out of eyes that felt full of grit from lack of sleep as she fought off exhaustion while her stomach growled loudly in the silence of the pristine yet somehow welcoming kitchen of the small abode upon catching sight of the food. "Most definitely that is a yes Babe!"

She chuckled warmly while making a dive for the round of cheese and then started looking around for a knife because it would be very bad manners to just stuff it into her mouth and start gnawing on the wax to get to the actual cheese even though she was hungry enough to do that very thing.

Gav had laughed and opened a draw and found the knives and eating utensils. "Here they are, baby." He pulled out one of the large cans of stew and used the kitchen can opener to remove the lid. "Des, the label says 'stew' but it's filled with pickles!" He gave her a teasing look through the hair that was in front of his face.

?Eeeep!? Des darted to the opposite side of the kitchen from her beloved husband and the can before she even took a look at it after of course she had snagged the knife from the drawer leaned up again the counter heedlessly chopping off chunks of the red wax from her wheel of cheese with little sounds of impending delight much like one might expect to hear in the bedroom as the cheese was exposed and she took her first bite of food in what seemed like forever. ?Mmmmm... oooohhhh.... yyyeeesss.... ssssooooo... goooood.?

Gavilean emptied the stew in a pot and put it on the stove. Then went and pulled out a bottle of wine, uncorked it, and poured two glasses on the kitchen table where he sat and waiting for the stew to heat up. He closed his eyes and had a smile of relief. "I don't know what this place is, Des, but it's a god send, that's for sure. Who would build something like this in a place that is nearly impossible to reach?"

She moved over to stand beside him and offered him part of the cheese as well knowing he had to be just as hungry as she was and there were no pickles in sight after all. She shook her head slowly while reaching for a glass of wine to take a drink. "I don't know either, Babe, but I am very thankful that we figured out that riddle and found this place. It really is lovely here. So peaceful and almost like it had just been waiting for us or something don't ya think?"

He took the offering of cheese and quickly devoured it, followed by a long drink of the wine. "Yes, it is peaceful. No doubt about that." He went to the window and looked outside. The buildings were perched on the side of a cliff, 2700 feet above the floor of the valley, where the only sounds would be the murmurs of the wind, and trickle of water that would run through the earth and come out from the side of the cliff purified and cold. "Do you suppose that Spirit Tiger had something to do with this? Those dragonettes actually led us here. That was too obvious to be coincidental."

"I am certain of it," she said.

She took her glass of wine and joined him at the window. The view was truly magnificent, a balm to the spirit and if one were so inclined perhaps even a gateway to inner knowledge and strength. "This has such a feeling of being a place of learning to me Babe. Ancient knowledge here just waiting to be shared if one is willing to learn wouldn't ya say? I wonder if that Tiger has something to do with that?"

He put his arm around Des' shoulders as they gazed out the window at the rapidly darkening mountain terrain. "I think you're right, Des. This was set up as a school of some type and then abandoned. From what the Tiger had said, I think he was just looking for those who would be worthy to be here; and, perhaps lead it." He went to the stove, took off the hot stew and put it into two bowls. Then got spoons and brought it all to the table. He lit the gas lamps in the kitchen. "After we eat, maybe we can find a bath and bed. I'm dirty and exhausted."

She rested her head on his chest as they gazed out the window and smiled as she thought about all the things that could be learned in a place like this then turned with him away from the scenic view as he went toward the stove. Des seated herself at the table as he placed the bowls down. "I am so tired I'm afraid I may fall asleep in the bathtub love mine but I am so filthy that I just want to get clean again and sleep for a week! Thank ya for fixing the stew Babe." She sliced some more cheese for them to have with it and divided it between them then took up her spoon and ate their meal.

The meal filled them and dishes were left for morning chores. They put out the gas lamps and walked up a staircase with a candle they found. The entire top floor of that residence building was an open living area with Turkish wool carpets, a large 4-posted bed, closest and dressers and a opening to a bath area. The most amazing part of the upper room was the expanse of windows that went from the bedroom to bath and provided view that was like looked like you were in a next 2,700 feet above the valley floor. Gavilean lit a gas lamp and put out the candle. He lit another gas lamp in the bathroom and turned on the gas water heater. "Do you believe this place, Des!"

The Upper Floor

Des was absolutely amazed by the room they had walked into. She was trying to look everywhere all at once and ran from the closets which she threw open to the view then into the bathroom to look all around then back to Gav where she threw her arms around him in a tight hug. Navy blue eyes were shining brightly with excitement and pleasure and she had a radiant smile on her dirt streaked face. "Babe! I love this place! I can just imagine us spending a lot of time here. I want to just curl up on that bed and snuggle with you."

He laughed at his dear wife's enthusiasm, his cobalt blue eyes shining with love in spite of his exhaustion. "Des my love, we just may spend a very long time in this place if we can't find a way down from here. But for now, you're right. Let's bathe and curl up on that bed and snuggle and sleep for a very long time." He went and tested the water temperature in the tiled shower area. "Water's ready, babe!" he said, already undressing and laying his clothes aside.

"We made it here and we'll make it back love mine." She smiled lovingly to him while shucking off her clothes and stepping beneath the water with a long sigh of sheer bliss as the grim of their many trials began to be washed away. She moved to give him plenty of room to share the water too knowing he must be feeling just as horrid as she was after all the hours of their unexpected journey.

He took the soap from her and began to lather up her hair, massaging her scalp, washing it lovingly with his fingers. Then he smiled a weary smile and moved his soapy hands over her breasts and body, loving the way that smooth trim body felt beneath his hands as the water washed over them both.

She smiled and closed her eyes while rinsing the soap from her hair by leaning her head back beneath the warm water that felt heavenly then took her turn at washing his hair until all traces of dirt were gone and she had massaged his scalp until it was completely clean and smelled delicious. "I was starting to think we would never be clean again Babe. This feels so nice and I just know that bed is going to feel even better."

They continued to wash themselves and each other until they were once again clean, smelling good, refreshed and ready for bed. Gav turned off the water and tossed Des a towel. "That bed looks mighty welcoming, my love. I can't even think straight anymore. They walked naked to the bed and pulled down the covered on a bed that looked clean and comfortable. Gav looked at Des and he smiled. Even without sleep for thirty hours he was still turned on by the way she looked there in the glow of the gas lamps.

She snagged the towel and dried herself off then briskly rubbed her long chestnut hair with it to get as much of the moisture out of it as she could as they walked over to the bed together. Her gaze roaming appreciatively over her beloved husband from head to toe as muscles rippled beneath his skin bringing desire to life as always deep inside her the was reflected in the passion of navy blue as they lifted to his handsome face and a slow grin curved into place. "Sleep then I'm gonna pounce ya so prepare yourself love mine. Ya have been well and truly warned."

As tired as he was, he couldn't help but laugh with delight at her delicious warning. He let her climb into bed, and then he shut off the lamps and climbed into bed, still laughing. "I love you so much, my Tera Destre Starfare, Queen of Westridge and Bartender Extraordinaire! I considered myself warned and look forward to that pouncing with great anticipation." He scooted over close to her and took her into his arms as they do every night. "This has been quite an adventure, my love. I have a feeling there is more to come tomorrow."

She wrapped herself up in his embrace and rested her head on his chest where she could hear his heart beating and smiled as at long last after everything they had been through impossible though it seemed in this place they were safe, fed, clean, and could relax. "You are my heart and soul Gavilean Starfare and I do love you whole bunches and bunches and then some! Whatever tomorrow brings it will have to wait until after the pouncing I have planned for ya then they can do their worst. Should they dare to interrupt before then I do believe I shall do them bodily harm love mine." Her voice was starting to trail off as events took their toll on her along with the shower and being snug in her husband's arms it was all catching up with her.

If she could have seen his smile in the darkness of the night, she would know that he was not going to let anything get in the way of the pouncing she had planned. He kissed the forehead of the woman he would love forever and always. . . and two days.
