Jean de La Fontaine came back to their beautiful new apartment near the end of the day and flung open the door. He was delighted to find Des there, for he had such good news to tell her. "Des! My love!!" he shouted out, shutting the door of the apartment behind him.
Des lept to her feet and ran through the bedroom to the living room. She had been sitting perched on the railing of the balcony and watching the people walk by since it was such a beautiful day. "Babe! I didn't expect you home so early!? she said while flinging herself into his arms with a smile, and then kissing him passionately while hugging him tightly.
He melted into the kiss and kissed her deeply. He loved Des so deeply and considered himself the most lucky man in all the world to be her husband and to have her as his wife. He'd do anything for her; even give his life a million times over. When the kiss ended he looked at her with a big smile upon his face, "I've got such good news, Des! I had to come right home to tell you."
"Tell me! Tell me Babe!" His excitement was fueling her own. A radiant smile broke free as she tipped her head back to catch his chestnut gaze with her navy blue one.
"Des, we are soon going to be rolling in money! Lately I have not feel good about pirating for I'll be the first to admit that while it might be glamorous and exciting, it's not the most honorable of professions. But...listen to this!" He was now walking about the living room like a man stepping on hot coals and had no motivation for slowing down. His arms and hands were expressive and his French accent was stronger than usual.
"Des! I have the legitimate business! The Adventure Fortune, it has been commissioned to carry a shipment of most valuable goods from Rhydin to St. Ive's Harbor. It's a seven-day journey and not more than that - of this I am most certain. We sail around the southern tip of Barrett's Bay and up the western coast, but in two weeks I will be back here with return cargo and enough wealth so that we'll be comfortable and can do all the shopping and remodeling we want. This is a good thing, yes?"
"Babe! That is wonderful news! I will miss you terrible but it is only for two weeks. I can wait that long I guess." She smiled softly to him as she watched him pacing back and forth so obviously excited. Des would miss him terribly and wished that she could go with him, but it would impossible to get off work from all three of her jobs.
She was just certain it was only fourteen days after all, but still she hated to be apart from him for even the short time during the days when their schedules were different but she could do this. Other couple were apart for longer periods of time than two weeks and she didn't want to look like a fool for making a fuss so she closed the distance between them and hugged him tightly again and smiled radiantly to him. "I'll have something special waiting for you when you get back Babe. When do you set sail?"
"We are even now in the process of loading the ship, and we are scheduled to sail the day after tomorrow." He put his hands upon her shoulders and looked into her eyes. "Mon cheri, I shall miss you so much being apart from you, but there is even more good news. If we are successful in this trade voyage, we will be given a one-year contract and I'll be able to put my first mate in charge. I'll stay here in Rhydin with you and handle the business matters, and I won't have to make the journeys. Just this once I need to go to be sure all goes well and to meet the people in St. Ives."
That was wonderful news! They would have a steady source of income and could even afford to buy a home instead of renting a place; at least it sounded like that. Her beloved French Pirate was looking out for their future and she loved him so very much for that as well as for everything else. Her heart was overflowing with happiness and joy. She laughed with delight, navy eyes sparkling merrily. "I can't wait for you to get back! No more trips and no more being apart!! We can get a house of our own and everything. Babe! Won't that be just great!!"
