It started early in the evening. Why didn't these things ever start in the morning after you've had plenty of rest? Why did they always start in the evening when you're tired anyway?
The contractions.
They started to really come on strong in the evening and they were coming more and more quickly. That's when Gav became concerned...really concerned. Soon he had the entire staff alerted and he insisted that Des get into bed. He was with her when her water broke, and when the contractions became closer together. But then the servants sent him out into the antechamber and closed the door. He hated that. He wanted to be with her. He walked into the nursery and touched the bed and the toys. . .and just prayed.
Des was doing just fine. They had practiced and were prepared for this. Everything was ready and waiting for the big event. She was doing okay when the pains started and even went to bed when her beloved husband began insisting that she did because now they were coming closer together and man did they ever hurt! Everything was still okay when her water broke and the time was almost here for their little girl to finally join them in the outside world as she held tightly to Gav's hand.
But suddenly those dang blasted servants stepped in and as she regained her wits after a contraction her husband was no longer in the room with her holding her hand, lending her his strength. That was when all hell broke loose and the cussing began but unlike most laboring mothers, it wasn't Gav Des was cussing but their servants with each breath she managed to draw.
Creatively and in every language she knew which so happened to be quite a few. She did not stop cussing them for separating her husband from her until she heard the first cry of their newborn little girl then she let out a yell even louder than any that had come before with both voice and mind. "Gavilean! She's here! She's here!"
Gav wanted to be with Des, and he was very upset. . . until he heard the cussing. He heard her cuss before, but never like that! Not even ol' jerk face, Vanion, made her cuss like that! Suddenly he was happy to be outside the bedroom. His elfin ears were sensitive and heard much more then humans could hear. He heard her in pain and the groaning and grunting as she pushed. Then he heard the best sound in the world, his beloved wife saying, "Gavilean! She's here! She's here!"
Then he heard the soft cry of their daughter, but he was already in the room by than. The staff was washing their daughter and wrapping her in a blanket. Then placed her in Des' arms and Gav was just beaming. "Oh, honey! She's beautiful! She's gorgeous!" He bent down and kissed his wife, his prayers being answered. "I love you so much, Tera."
Tears of joy were running down her cheeks unnoticed as she held their baby in her arms for the very first time and kissed Gav lovingly. "I do love ya, Gav; whole bunches. Just look how tiny she is. I swear she has your nose. And see her little bitsy toes. Look babe." She had to unwrap the little babe to examine her from the very top of her head to the very tips of each tiny but perfectly formed toe in awe between shared glances of wonder that they had created this new life together out of the love they shared for each other.
His voice was a whisper of love, "She's perfect, my love. Our little Princess Gwenilb?th Starfare." His fingers touched her toes and fingers, and then gently touched her cheek, which started the nursing reflex. He looked at Des and smiled. "I think she's hungry."
"Oh!" Des shot him a startled glance then chuckled quietly as she saw their daughter's rosebud mouth already in motion. "I do believe that ya are right. I guess I should feed her." Gingerly she got her started nursing after a bit of fumbling and a couple of false starts. Apparently this would take a bit of practice but she would have plenty of time to practice. Every few hours matter of fact for a while now. She slanted a sheepish grin over to the man she held so dear. "Hmm. It ain't as easy as it looks in the books Babe."
He was just mesmerized seeing Gwenilb?th nursing on his wife's breasts. "It looks like it could hurt, honey." He laid his head next to Des' and looked down at their daughter, his hand on her back. "I sure do love my two girls." He smiled and gave Des another kiss. "You make beautiful babies, my love."
She reached up and cradled his cheek in her palm while steadying their baby against herself with the other tenderly. "I would say the very same of you love mine. I am so happy at this moment that I could just cry from it." She smiled softly to him and returned the kiss lovingly then rested her head against his while snuggling against his side and relaxing as their child nursed. Her lashes drifted downwards slowly and she blinked.
He couldn't love his two girls more. He didn't want Des see his own tears of joy, but he suspected that she had. "You're going to be as beautiful as your mommy, aren't you, Gwenilb?th. Soon you'll be shouting 'Blood, guts, glory' along with your mom." As they talked the staff cleaned up Des and the bed and were taking care of all the necessary duties with no little precision, with Trinalee organizing like a general.
She couldn't help but laugh at Gav's words as she figured that he just might be right, unless he put his foot down and made up some rules on her which he had yet to do. She leaned to give him a kiss while still chuckling softly. "Goddess, I've never loved anyone as much as I do you. No one has ever understood me like you do. Let's hope our parenting skills are up to the challenge of a child that we created." She sighed quietly out of sheer bliss and switched Gwenilbeth to her other breast with a bit less difficulty than the first time around and smiled over that small accomplishment. "I don't know about you Babe, but I could sure use less of these servants. Please get rid of them."
Gav turned to Trinalee and nodded. The hefty old woman smiled and nodded and quickly scooted the servants out of the room. Trinalee could be a motherly busy-body, but she also knew when the royal couple needed privacy. Gav lifted his feet and laid upon the bed with Des and their beautiful daughter. "This is such a miracle, honey. All this time she was growing within you. That is so amazing to me." His hand caressed Des' hair over and over. "Thank you for such a beautiful child," he whispered, and kissed her eyes.
Something melted inside her at his words as they laid together with their child. The three of them all snuggled up on the fresh clean smelling sheets now that everything had been replaced and the room aired out and she had been bathed along with their little girl. A part of her was still trying to take it all in. The fact that her pregnancy was over and they were now parents to this baby resting so trustingly in her arms was so brand new to her.
Des' voice was hushed in the quiet of their room as they talked. "We did this love mine. Together, not just me. I just still can't believe she is really here after all this time waiting and hoping and praying she would be okay. She is just so perfect and very tiny."
"Yes, we did. Forevermore we are going to be a family." He wondered to himself how much of the Elfin their daughter might have inherited. It could be a little, it could be a lot. Time would tell.
