?I?m telling you, Scotty, that scarecrow definitely winked at me!? The strawberry-blond elven girl looked from the lifelike scarecrow back to the young boy whose black and yellow tail made it known he wasn?t entirely human.

?You?re seeing things, Melima. Stop being such a baby!? Scotty teased his friend much to Melima?s chagrin. He marched up to the blond scarecrow guarding Farmer John?s field and pulled some straw out of its baggy sleeve. ?See??

?OWWWW! My arm!? Scotty and Melima both stared at each other.

?Did you say??? came Scotty?s question.

?No, did you?? was Melima?s hushed response.

?MY ARM! GIVE ME BACK MY STRAW!? The scarecrow flailed its very real arms back and forth at the two children.

?AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!?

Scotty and Melima took off running until a loud cackling from the scarecrow stopped them. They turned around to gawk.

?Yo, short stuffs, you little dudes sure are frickerfracking gullible!? Kazzy, dressed for her current seasonal work helping manage Farmer John?s hayride and other fall entertainments, continued to laugh at the children.

?I TOLD you that scarecrow winked at me! You shoulda listened, doofus!? Melima stuck her tongue out at Scotty. In retaliation Scotty flicked his tail out to snap at the girl?s legs.

?Quit it!? Melima scowled with all the power in her tiny frame at Scotty. He must have known that look because he turned to start running again but didn?t move fast enough. In fact, he didn?t move at all except to move up into the air several inches off the ground. Melima smirked at him and continued to lock onto him with her gaze to keep him suspended in the air.

Scotty landed with a thud and a yelp on the dirt ground.

?All right, all right, Teddy?s almost back with the wagon. You want a ride and not a noogie right? Because scarecrows are known for their noogie sandwiches.? Kazzy loosely draped an arm around Melima?s shoulders. The ominous knuckles she held over her strawberry-blond head had broken the girl?s concentration on holding up Scotty.

?Yeah! Feed her that noogie sandwich!? Scotty cheered Kazzy on from the sidelines until she pointed at him.

?Yo, if she has one you?re having two, buck-o.? Even though Kazzy laughed at the fake threat to Scotty he clammed up rather quickly deciding not to take any chances. He scurried to his feet and ran over to Melima once Kazzy let the little elf go. They giggled and ran up to meet Teddy as he pulled up on his tractor attached to the hay-filled wagon.

?Exactly what kind of freaks are you letting in here, Strawman?? The sneering voice came from the thick-bellied man trudging up behind Kazzy. A mug of Farmer John?s pumpkin ale sloshed in his pudgy hand.

?I?m a chick not a man, dude. Don?t worry though it?s just a costume. No need to fear me in all my straw glory,? Kazzy snickered.

?I?m not talking about you.? He glared past her bony shoulders at Melima and Scotty horsing around on their way up into Teddy?s wagon.

?Oh, no, you?re mistaken. Those aren?t freaks they?re kids. But I totally get how you?d mix that up. They're as boogery as any Boogeyman.?

The man snorted. ?They?re freaks all right. Utter magical filth. How can you expect decent people to share a hayride let alone a city with the likes of them.?

Kazzy tried not to gawk at him. She was still on the clock and didn?t want to upset one of Farmer John?s customers. ?Uh?well, they paid the same amount that you did to take a ride so that?s what we?re going to do. You?re more than welcome to wait for the next trip though.?

He shook his head and stared at her. ?You should know better. Do you realize what type of threat they pose to our kind??

Kazzy wanted to keep her mouth shut. She knew she should let it drop. But anger wasn?t a common emotion for her and it clouded her thinking. ?What makes you think we?re the same kind??

His beady eyes took their time sizing her up. ?You might not be meaty but you look human enough girly.?

?That?s just what I?d have you think?? One pale hand reached into the folds of her baggy brown pants and she tipped her head forward. When she stood back up she grinned to bear the wax fangs she had slipped over her teeth. ?I?m really a vampire wizard scarecrow?.wah-ha-ha?fear me! I'm coming to molest your sexy love handles and eat your dinner!? She lurched forward at him but started hysterical laughing before she could carry out anymore of the silly act.

The man stood his ground and gave her a disgusted look. ?You?re even worse than these freaks. They don?t know any different. But you,? he pointed one grimy finger in her face, ?you?re a traitor to your own by choice.? He took one step towards her but a steady, calloused hand stopped him.

?Excuse me, friend, but the ride?s about to start. I suggest you turn back around the way you came and see the good man in the booth to get your money back.? Teddy spoke in an even tone but the strength in his hand alone was enough to give anyone pause before pressing him further.

?I wouldn?t go within twenty feet of those foul?creatures if you paid me.? He spit on the ground in front of Teddy and Kazzy before stalking his way down the winding dirt path.

?All right, let?s get a?movin?!? Teddy addressed the small crowd and tried to return a jovial spirit to the autumn air. He winked at Kazzy on his way back to his duty at the wheel.
