Sheyleigh tucked the last of the suplies into the storrage under the wagon humming happily as she worked, still caught up in a happy daze from the conversation if front of the fire in the Inn. Love! Who would have thought?

Moving into the confines of the caravan she began shifting the contents of the cabinets, making room for Alex's things. Another silly grin lit her features at the thought of sharing her living space with him during the trip. To have his things beside her own, and have him riding beside her on the drivers bench. It gave her a nice feeling.

One last look around, really nothing more she could do in here. She heads outside to start a fire and wait for Alex to arrive.

He ran into the Keep, the words he and Shey exchanged swimming in his head. Love. He actually had said it. He was grinning from ear to ear. His only thought... getting his belongings and getting back to her. He was looking forward to this, even if he didn't know what awaited them... him.

"Al..." Azure began, but he interrupted. "Not now Azure, I've got to get going."

"Alex, Stop!"

"Not now I said!" As soon as he finished his words, he heard the slam and lock of the door. "Open it Azure."

"I will. In a moment. Be careful Alex. Watch over Shey, and remember, if you need me..." She trailed off.

"Don't worry my friend. I shall guard her with my life." he paused and took a deep breath. "I love her Azure."

"I know silly cub. I've known since the day you first talked about her. Now, here are your things." She said as they appeared right near his foot. "Get going, and may Gaia keep you safe." He started to head out the door but stopped. Dropping his bag, he turned and ran to her, giving the large dragon the best hug one could give one her size. "Don't worry, I'll be home before you know it, now, take me to her, please."

The mist surrounded Alex as he went out the door. He walked with it for what seemed like forever then felt it leave him. The smell of the fire found his nostrils. The mist had left him, and still unsure of the encampment, he called for her. "Shey?" He stood and waited for her to come to him. "Alex!" She said his name as she approached him. Alex smiled and held out his arms, feeling her there, he wrapped them around her, savoring the moment. "I've a fire, come." She gave him a quick kiss before taking his hand and leading him to the fire. "I'll join you in a moment. I'm going to put your things away. I'll show you where they are later."

He wondered if her thoughts were the same as his. Sharing space with her. Having her there next to him. This would be a new experience for him.

Alex's adventure had just begun.

Breaking camp the next morning was easily accomplished, even after a long night of sleeping tucked close to Alex's heart purring softly to keep his night terrors at bay. Once everything was stowed safely and all the compartments in the wagon securely latched, she gently woke Alex.

"Love? I'm headed outside to harness the horses, theres breakfast on the table near the window. I want to get underway before midmorning." Pressing a soft kiss to his cheek and making sure he was fully awake and oreintated before moving of to the door at the rear of the wagon.

The foxling positively danced her way across the clearing singing happily. Day and Night the two strong draft horses that pulled the caravan were happily cropping grass when she came to collect them. "Come along my lovelies its time to be going home."

Once the horses were harnessed Shey slipped back inside to check on Alex, who was just finishing dressing for the morning. A soft smile drifted over her face and a blush to her cheeks as she realised just a moment sooner and she would have caught him partly clothed.

"I know you are there Shey, why are you so quiet?" Alex asked carefully making his way across the interior of the wagon to lay a hand on her arm.

"Just watching. Are you ready to set out Alex?" Shey pressed another kiss to his cheek, she could not seem to help it. There was just something about the smell of his skin that she enjoyed so much.

"Just about." Alex answered with a smile.

"Shey? What is that sound" Sheyleig was growing accustomed to questions like this, it brought a smile to her lips every time.

"Its a pair of cardinals in the trees Alex. The male is chittering to the female almost like hes scolding her. It looks like all their fledgelings have flown away and the mother bird is distressed." Another soft smile the foxling going on to discribe more.

"The trees here seem to be mostly pitch pines and evergreens. They come to within a couple feet of the road. Here and there are little patches of late wildflowers among the tree roots. Behind the trees the sun is setting. The clouds are tinged a deep flame orange with shades of pink and violet swirled in."

"It sounds lovely Shey, but not as lovely as you" Alex smiled reaching out to take the foxlings arm.

Sheyleigh blushed a shade of pink the rival any found in the sky directing the horses off the road on a barely seen path. She started singing softly in the multi-tonal language of the shadowfox, a soft soothing song of love sounding much like a harmonious purring.

Soon the campground where they would spend their first night on the road came into view and Sheyleigh slowed the horses.

This was the first night away from Rhydin. He was tired and excited all at the same time. He didn't know if he would be able to fall asleep. He lay there listening to the soft rhythmic breathing of Shey and soon he found his eyelids closing and sleep taking him, and as if on cue, the nightmares began. He saw the same thing he saw every night, Ivana being killed by the demon Cambione. Yes, they were the same except for one thing. They seemed to be stronger, pulling at him. He could feel what was happening, or at least that's the way it seemed to him.

Alex thrashed about in the wagon. "IVANA!" Alex called out. Shey awoke and tried to calm him. "Shh, Alex, I'm here love." She brushed his hair from his face and found that although he was sweat soaked, he was icy cold to the touch. His eyes were wide open, yet he was still asleep. Shey saw a glow within them and noticed the flames, the very same flames she saw at the Keep. "Alex, love, please wake up." Her voice was trembling. Alex began to pant. He curled up for a moment, then turned onto his back. Shey listened for his breath which was almost too quiet. She noticed something else as she lay on his chest. The brand over his heart was warm. She went to move from him, but couldn't as Alex's arms wrapped around her, holding her to him.

As the first light of dawn awoke Shey, she slipped from his arms. He was finally sleeping soundly. She quietly washed and left the wagon to get a fire and breakfast started. The smell of the fire woke Alex. He was still very tired but drug himself up, washed and went outside the wagon. He followed the smell of the fire and called for her. "Shey?" She noticed as she stood up how tired he looked. "Stay where you are love, I'm coming." His skin was still cold and clammy. "Are you feeling alright?" She asked. "Yes, just a bit tired." His voice was quieter than normal.

He never remembered feeling this tired. He sat there quietly while he ate, his mind racing. Could he too be linked with the fires of Azure like his mother, Mary? If he was, it shouldn't be as strong as it is for Mary, for they only bonded for a short time. "Alex?" Shey's soft voice brought him from his thoughts. "Are you alright love?" Alex smiled at her and carefully felt her face. "I'm fine my sweet." He lied and she knew it, but for now, wouldn't pry.

Gaia help me. He prayed silently. How can I protect her in this state? He put his arm around Shey holding her close, and for a moment, be at peace... until nightfall.

Sheyleigh worried over the night before as she broke camp that morning. Poor alex looked so tired and ill, and she had this dreadfull feeling that it would only get worse and there was nothing she could do to help him.

Once the suplies were packed away she moved to where Alex rested by the fire and whispered in his ear "Are you ready to continue on my love? We should be heading out if we want to reach the next camp before dark."

Alex nodded tiredly and Shey helped hin to his feet. "Why dont you ride in the back and rest untill we stop for noon meal?" Alex agreed quietly having no intention of doing more than just lieing sleepless on the bunk. He just did not wish to distress Shey more than he could tell she already was.

Once Alex was settled again on the bunk Shey wiggled trough the half door to the drivers bench and took her place on the bench seat nudging the sturdy horses into motion. Not knowing what else to do for him she asks the cart horses softly " Well my lovlies... what do we do with him?"

The horses, being horses and unconcerned had no answers for her.

Lunch was a hurridly packed together affair of cold sliced sasuage and vegitables packed into rolled flatbread. While they sat on the roadside to eat Sheyleigh described some of the scenery to Alex.

" Across the road is a little clearing where someone has dug a travelers well, its a deep old stone theing covered with a wood shingled roof. There are a climbing roses growing along the support posts of the roof, but they arent nearly as pretty as the roses at your home. These are the little single peteled yellow and white wild roses that grow around here."

She slipped her hand into his giving it a little squeeze looking him over carefully as she continued, she was still quite worried about him. " At the foot of the well is a family of little brown hares, It looks like a mother, and three young. The young rabbits are happily nibbling the grass, but Mamma keeps giving us anxious looks."

Finished with lunch she leans and brushes a kiss across his forehead, whispering "You still look troubled my love. Will you sit with me while we drive and tell me about it?"

The sightless eyes of the tiger man seemed to gaze right at the foxling for a moment before he nodded and whispered back, "I can try " He then brushed a kiss across her cheek before she helped him back into the wagon so they could press on.

Even though it wasn't that cool of an autumn, Alex was wearing a warm muslin shirt under his vest, and Shey noticed that his hands were almost cold as she helped him onto the wagon. He sat quiet for a few long moments. "I think my link with my mother goes deeper than even she knows."

"Alex, please, I don't understand."

"Mother can't be very far away from the fires of Azure Keep. I think..." he paused, not quite believing it himself. "I think I share that link as well."

"You're scaring me love." Shey's voice sharing the same emotion. "What will happen?"

Empathy for her flooded over him. Feeling her feelings, his voice trembled as he spoke. "Mother can't be far away from the flames of Azure Rose for very long or she'll die." He heard her gasp. "The farther we get, the weaker I get." His hand found her hair and he stroked it comforting her. "Don't worry my sweet, I do not think that I will die, but if I cannot summon Azure's help, I'll need yours."

"Of course. You know I'll help..." He held up his hand.

"You don't understand Shey. I'll need you to give me something. I'll need you to give me some of your life force." Alex felt the sudden jolt of the wagon stopping, and could only feel her staring at him in disbelief.

Sheyleigh

Date: 2005-10-30 16:43 EST
It wasn't so much disbelief that had the foxling staring as intense shock, followed by swift contemplation. "How would we do this?" Curiousity and a bit of wariness tinged her voice. Sharing her lifeforce was not something that Shey had ever contemplated before. "And what would the effects be?"

Setting the reins down she turned to Alex and took both her hands in his. " The reason I ask beloved is that once we reach Kemria I have to be very focused. Things are very dangerous there right now especially for my family. I dont want to put either of us at risk, but I cant care for you as you are now if something goes wrong."

"Tomorrow we would reach the shadowpass that takes us off this world and to Kisan. Will this get worse there?"

Alexandir Tigre

Date: 2005-11-01 18:23 EST
Alex pondered her question for a moment before answering. "I don't know how much I'll be affected going off world because I've never been. I know that Mother wouldn't be able to. I'm going to need to see if I can contact Azure before we do go off world and see if she can help me."

Alex wished he could see her face, to see her eyes. He knew she was worried and not just about him either. She had important things on her mind. More important than his problems.

"As for giving me some of your life force, that's not difficult, and if we did it at night before we retired, you should be fine by morn."

"Alex," she said softly holding his hands. "Just how is this done?"

"Remember when I healed your leg? I gave you some of my life force. That's how I can heal." Alex took a deep breath. "But I can also take away someone elses life force. I can be a weapon, but I prefer to use it for good. I can take life force of, lets say, an enemy, and give it to someone who needs it." Alex sat quietly before continuing, waiting for Shey to speak.

"It's a lot to ask, love..."

"I can understand if you don't want to do it." Alex interrupted. Shey put her fingers over his lips. "What I was saying my love, is it is a lot to ask, but I will do it for you. I just want to know the details."

"At the last stop before going off world, I will attempt to contact Azure. If that fails, then we will go with the the alternate." He takes her in his arms, holding her against him. She can hear the rhymic beating of his heart. "I'm sorry my sweet." He whispered. "Sorry for putting you through this. If I had known..."

"Shhh my love." Shey snuggled against him. "I'm not taking us to a ball." They both chuckled. "Then onward my sweet!" Alex pointed forward and smiled, but even his smile betrayed his worry.

Shey tried very hard to pass the rest of that afternoons drive speaking only of light pleasent things. She spent a lot of time describing little bits of the scenery to Alex as they passed, watching him growing paler and weaker with each mile. After a while she moved both the reins to one hand and slipped the other hand into his, just clinging to him in silence.

The campground set before the shadowpass was diffrent from the others, a fact indicated mostly by the chime of the horses hooves on the cobblestones of the courtyard. The caravan was pulled into a semi-secluded spot at the far edge of the cobbles. "Alex," Shey gently shook the dozing man leaning against her sholder "We are here love."

As soon as he was awake enough to be orientated she helped him back down inside the wagon before hoping over the side and gliding to the ground. The horses were swiftly tended to and set loose in a small field through a gate in the side of the courtyard.

When she returned to the wagon Alex was sitting on the step outside the rear door. "Shey? What is this place? It feels diffrent."

Sheyleigh thought a moment on how to answer that. "This is the temple of Kel, Ken, and Ket. Here on this world you call them moon sun and stars. The courtyard is open to the sky so that Kel, Ken and Ket can guard the travelers resting under thier gaze at all times. Its a sanctuary of sorts. And its the last stop before the shadowpass to Kisan."

Alex took a deep breath as he held out his hand to Shey. "Then it is here that I must try and contact Azure."

"And if you can't?"

"Then I will hold out as long as I can before asking your help." He lowered his head, embarrassed. "Perhaps I shouldn't have come with you. If anything were to happen to you, I... I..."

Shey took Alex's face in her hands and gently lifted it looking into his blank eyes. "Alex, love, don't be so hard on yourself. You didn't know this would happen, and besides, it was I that asked you, remember?" She brushed a kiss against his lips. "I wanted you here with me." She took his hand. "Now, what can I do to help you in contacting Azure?"

"I'll need a fire."

"Alright, I'll get one going. Anything else?"

He smiled gently. "Just you being there with me."

"I already planned that. Now let me go get the fire going. I'll come get you when I'm finished."

Alex nodded and leanded against the door. He was scared. He could not deny that fact. Soon the smell of the fire reached him and he felt the soft touch of Shey. "The fire's all ready." She said as she took his hand and led him to the fire pit. Alex sat in silence. She sat across from him seeing him through the flames.

"He crossed his arms over his chest hi right hand over his heart, and closing his eyes, he began the call to his dragon companion. "Azure, please, I need your help. If you can hear me please answer."

Shey felt her breath catch at the sight before her. Alex's body glowed blue and the voice she heard was not that of Azure and she was afraid for him.

"Alex."

"Mother? But how?" Shey eyes widened. His mother? She thought to herself.

"Azure told me of your plans and I know why you have summoned us. I will do what I can to help you."

"What do I do?"

"You must enter the flames." Alex nodded and stood up. As he took a step towards the fire Shey screamed. "ALEX! NO!"

"Do not fear for my son, little foxling. He will be safe, I promise."

Shey shivered. Something, or was it someone touched her cheek. Her attention turned back to Alex just in time to see the flames begin to engulf him. She held back the urge to pull him out. She stood in wonderment as the orange and yellow flames turned blue and lavender. The flames seemed to be caressing him. An urn of sorts appeared in his hands.

"Take these with you my son. It contains the Azure Rose flames. Only a flicker of flame is needed."

"Thank you Mother." Alex's voice was soft.

"I will remain here at the Keep until you return. And Alex?"

"Yes Mother?"

"She's lovely." Shey felt the heat rise to her cheeks. "I love you Alex."

"I love you too, Mother." With that, the flames died out leaving Alex standing in the middle of the pit holding the urn.

Sheyleigh cursed softly under her breath, that was not the first impression she would have liked to make on her beloved's mother. The woman must think her a frightened fool! In the kemrian court all the vapid useless butterflies were called "Lovely" It was somewhat of a derogitive term used for useless daughters and animals.

Looking over at Alex the foxling fretted and worried. "We should go find someplace safe to keep that in the caravan love. It will need to be secured so that it will not be dammaged in the crossing tomorrow."

Alex nodded but made no move towards the wagon, remaining seated at the fireside to ask a question. "Shey? What will the crossing be like? Is there anything special we will have to do?"

Shey settled back and looked into the flames barely supressing a shiver at the memory of alex walking into them. That was one sight she hoped they did not have to repeat often at all.

"The physical act of crossing is very simple, We simply walk through the gate and let the gatekeep shut the way behind us. The actuall crossing itself is different for everyone. For me not having strong magical gifts but having a talent for flight, It feels as though for just a moment I am soaring higher and faster than I have ever gone."

"Illyan tells me for him crossing a shadowpass is like burrowing a deep tunnel seeking a safe nest in the earth. But the one thing all agree on is that the sensation only lasts a moment when you are in the shadow between two worlds. And for some people thats not enough. The develop what we call the Longing. It is an adiction of sorts. Some of the souls suffering the longing have gone so far as to enter a pass with no clear destination in mind simply to lose themselves in the feeling."

"If your feeling up to it we can make the crossing after breakfast. The gatekeeper will have loaded fresh water and sand gear for us by morning."

Alex quietly ate his breakfast. He could feel Shey's frustration over what his mother had said. Keeping his head down, as if looking at his plate he let out a long sigh before speaking.

"What's bothering you?"

"Nothing." She said flatly.

"Shey, you know I feel what you feel, and ever since my conversation with my Mother, you've been upset."

"Lovely. She said I'm... lovely."

"And what's wrong with that?"

"It demeaning."

Alex was a bit shocked at her words. "I think you're lovely, and I can't see you. I guess I'll toss that word from my vocabulary." He reaches into his shirt and takes out an imaginary book and quill, then begins his imaginary writing. "Strike lovely from dictionary." He tucks the imaginary things away. "There, is that better?"

"Alex, that's not what I meant."

"Isn't it? Mother doesn't know you. She didn't know that words would upset you so. She only said what she saw of you. What you look like. If she had known, she wouldn't have used it, and it wasn't like she had a lot of time to get to know you. Perhaps her choice of words aren't the best sometimes, but I think she's done pretty damn good considering when she came to Rhydin she was a trained assassin and didn't give a damn who her target was! With Azure's help, and Father's love, she became a good wife, mother and friend." His hurt was obvious. He was protective of his family. Setting his plate down, hands in his lap, he took a deep calming breath. "She likes you, Shey. It was a... compliment."

He sat there without a sound, waiting. Waiting for what, he didn't know.

Sheyleigh

Date: 2005-11-07 19:19 EST
"Alex! You misunderstood. I was not mad at your mother. I was mad at myself. Where I am from to be seen as weak and "lovely" Makes you a target. I did not want my first introduction to your family to be when I was feeling weak and helpless." Soft fingers brush across the back of his hand.

"You have every reason in the world to be proud of your mother Alex. I would never speak a word against her. She just touched a nerve that was already sore because I could do nothing to help you."

The foxling felt even worse now, not only was she incapable of helping him, but she could not even keep from ofending him and insulting his family. She rose from her place and murrmered quietly "Excuse me." then hurried into the caravan slamming the sliding door behind her.

And then she did something she almost never did. She flung herself on the bunk covered her face with her arm, and cried.

Alexandir Tigre

Date: 2005-11-07 19:55 EST
Alex paced back and forth. You're an idiot Alex. He kept saying to himself. He heard her crying. Hurting her hurt him and he paced faster. Without thinking, he changed into his tiger form. The large orange cat pacing back and forth at the back of the wagon. He knew better than to aproach her right now. That was the one thing that he had learned on the very few times his parents had fought. Wait before knocking. But how long? He didn't have any idea. This was the only fight he'd had with a woman, not counting his sisters, but then again, do they count?

He wondered what the others thought. A large tiger pacing at the wagon. He hoped they didn't think he was going to harm her, but when he was upset or overly nervous, he paced and when he paced, he turned into a tiger.

Oh Shey, I'm so sorry, I never meant to hurt you. He thought to himself. He stopped his pacing and curled up and waited. Waited for either the nerve to knock on the door, or for her to open it.

Yes, he would wait.

Sheyleigh

Date: 2005-11-08 11:37 EST
The "others" consisted of Night and Day, the two cart horses that pulled the wagon, and the Gatekeep, who was quite litteraly a shadow of a man. The shadow watched somewhat impassively and made no comment before aproaching the wagon with the last of the water casks to be stowed in the compartments under the wagon.

Inside the wagon Shey was slowly regaining her composure, now sitting on the edge of the bunk surveying the space inside the wagon. Everywhere inside were little traces of Alex, the bigest of all the urn left the night before by his mother now secured in a makeshift bracket on the wall to keep it safe.

Sheyleigh walked over to the urn and touched it softly letting out a deep sigh and a whispered prayer "please just let me be good enough for him."

She then made her way to the sliding door and quietly slid it open, immediately dropping to sit on the step and wait.

Alexandir Tigre

Date: 2005-11-08 15:03 EST
Hearing the door the tiger lifted his head. He wasn't quite sure how to approach her, but he just couldn't lie there. Slowly he stood, and quietly padding over to her, he gently laid his head in her lap. He waited for her to touch him before making another move. He felt her hand stroke his head and closing his eyes he stayed there for a few moments. As his form changed back to human, his hand reached and touched her face.

"I'm sorry Shey." He whispered before taking her into his arms and knowing they didn't have long before the real journey began, he just held her.

He didn't know what lay ahead, for him, for her, for them. The one thing he did know was it wasn't going to be a pleasure visit. He could sense that from Shey. With his strength restored he would be there for her. His worry was how long this would last.

He wouldn't worry about that now, for now he just wanted to relish that quiet moment with Shey in his arms.

Sheyleigh

The trip through the shadowpass seemed to lift a burden from Sheyleigh. Being on the familliar sandy plains of the country of Kisan, felt like comming home, and they still had three nights travel yet untill they reached the home of her parents.

The only thing that marred the foxlings mood was a nagging worry about Alex. She prayed to every god she could think of, and one or two she was fairly certain she had just made up, that the flames his mother had given him would be enough to keep him whole. She would be forever consumed with guilt if her bringing him here caused him permenant injury.

On the thought of mother's Sheyleigh winced. She had yet to prepare Alex for meeting her own mother. Keillyn Lightfoot was not your typical mother. She had devoted her life to the Kemrian independance movement, and consequently raised her daughter to do the same.

That was why Shey had originally come to the Red Dragon Inn. She had been sent by her mother to find her missing cousins Stasei and Lyren. Instead she had found the half grown offspring of one of her cousins... and evidence that the other might never be found.

"Alex..." Shey called softlyback into the confines of the wagon as she pulled it to a stop for lunch "We need to talk"

Alexandir Tigre

Date: 2005-11-22 18:47 EST
Alex too was worried about the flames of Azure Rose. He wondered if they were from the Keep itself, or if they were actually from his mother. If they were hers, he wondered how weak she would become, if any. His mind was racing. He didn't want to jepordize Shey or his mother.

He sat on the bed and grabbed a pillow, hugging it close. Shey's scent was strong. He held it tighter as if protecting it... her.

He thought about her family. What would they think of him? He was blind. Alex was beginning to understand how Shey felt meeting his mother, even though it wasn't completely in the flesh and just an image.

His stomach growled. He patted it trying to calm its screaming down. He hadn't been eating very much and his stomach was letting him know it was unhappy and hungry.

As he chuckled to himself, he felt the lurch of the wagon and heard Shey call to him.

"Alex, we need to talk."

"On my way to you." He answered as he climbed into the seat next to her giving her a quick kiss. He sensed a bit of anxiety. "Anything wrong?"

Sheyleigh

Date: 2005-12-01 17:56 EST
"I need to tell you about my home, and my family." The foxling gave a nervous swallow casting a long slow look over Alex "Especially about my mother."

Sheyleigh pressed a soft kiss onto Alex's cheek in a move meant to be reassuring, though it somehow felt hollow to her. "Mother has been working all my life to restore her brother's children to the Kemrian throne. She can be a bit overwhelming at times when she starts talking revoloution. She is likely to be very harsh towards you because of your eyesight, and because she is apt to belive that you will distract me from searching for my cousins."

Alex listened to Shey quietly he could tell that this was hard for her to put into words. He lifted a hand to softly stroke her cheek making soft sounds of comfort.

"Alex... I need to warn you, When we reach the border at Kemria, we most likely will be escorted by soilders the rest of our journey." The foxling watched the tiger anxiously, waiting for his response.

Alexandir Tigre

"Don't worry about me too much." he smiled and winked, trying to reassure her. "Father too spoke in revelations and prophecy." he took her hand. "Don't worry, it won't bother me."

"As for me being blind, well, I could always come in as a tiger, but then, that may not be a good thing either. We'll just have to play it by ear, or perhaps, I'll just need to prove myself."

"As for the guards, well, I could always eat them." he chuckled, hoping that his minor attempt at a joke would help her. "This is your world my sweet. You lead and I'll follow. I'll just smile and keep my mouth shut." and adding to himself for the time being. He sensed her nervousness. "It'll be ok. I promise." he whispered.

Alex was scared too. He needed to be strong for her. One question went through his mind. Would his strength hold?

Sheyleigh

Date: 2005-12-02 17:21 EST
Sheyleigh had to giggle at the thought of Alex snacking on an Kemrian royal guard. A weak smile crept across her lips, edging slowly into a shy grin. "You know... you might just be right. Everything might just be ok."

She nudged Alex back towards the opening into the wagon with another low chuckle. "Go back inside love, I'll be in to make lunch as soon as I have watered the horses."

Alex slipped back inside the caravan smiling himself. Things always seemed more hopeful when Shey smiled. He settled in at the little table below the window and waited there paitently. It did not take long for the foxling to come back inside through the rear door.

"I thought we might have hard sassuage and cheese over greens for lunch. Does that sound good to you?" Shey asked as she moved around the wagon pulling dishes form the secured cabinets.

"It sounds lovel...umm Very good Shey."

Sheyleigh hid an smirk and another soft giggle as she prepared their meal, feeling as though things were finally back on track again.

He was glad that they both had eased up a bit. The tension was less thick. He knew that she was still worried about her task ahead of her, and of his safety. He could fight when prevoked, a side of him he hoped that she would see as it wasn't exactally pretty. Going into crinos might be enough to scare them away, he hoped. Then the thought. What would crinos do to his strength? Would have to use the flames? He shuddered shaking off the thought.

"Are you cold love?" Shey's sweet voice touched his ears.

He stood up, right behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist. "Nope, not cold." He couldn't help himself. In his arms was a beautiful woman, her scent branded in his senses. He nipped her shoulder, and hoped he wouldn't get a flying lesson, after all, Shey was the only woman, other than his mother, sisters and a large blue dragon, he'd been with.

A soft shiver raced down her spine, there was something so unique about the feel of a warn body nestled against her wings. Almost instinctively she relaxed back against him meal preparations swiftly forgotten in the pleasure of just being with him.

"Alex? Have I told you today how much you mean to me?" The foxling half turns her head to give his cheek a soft nuzzle "I'm sorry I spoke so harshly about meeting your mother. I was just suprised, and embarased that I couldna help you on my own."

Sheyleigh turned around as best she could while still in his arms to look straight into his sightless eyes "Can you forgive me beloved?"

He smiled down at her. "There is nothing to forgive. You did nothing wrong, it was I who went off on a tangent." He put a finger under her chin and kissed her gently. "I do know how much I mean to you, for I have the same about you." He said, his voice barely above a whisper as he lightly stroked her wing. "I love you Shey, and I'll be there when you need me."

Past forgotten for now, Alex was content for the first time in a long time. For a brief time it seemed that they were the only two people in the universe, and all that mattered was their love for each other.

Afternoon saw them treking across the white sands of the Kisani homeland. As they traveled Shey spen the time telling Alex amusing stories about the plants and animals of the shadowsands.

"Over on a rock in the shade is a little blue scaled sky lizzard, its said they are descended from dragons, because they can glide great distances on leathery flaps of skin under their forelegs. They get their name because their scales change in the daylight with the color of the sky."

Shey felt so much more relaxed now, she really did not like being at odds with Alex. This journey really had been a test. For all that she had always had people about Sheyleigh had never had to share living space with someone she cared for. From time to time she sent him back into the depths of the wagon to fetch cups of cool water from the tap installed in the small galley space. The desert sun was feirce and it would not do for wither of them to take ill from the heat.

Sunset came and Sheyleigh stoped the horses in a grove of stunted trees. "We must be on our guard tonight my lovelies" she spoke softly to the horses as she prepared them for the night "I mislike the feeling of this place."

After the horses were bedded down for the night, Shey joined Alex where he was struggling to stack a small portion of wood for a fire. "Let me help with that beloved" Sticks were taken from his hands and swiftly stacked for the longest burn. It didnt take long to have a fire going and supper heating, a rich stew of vegitables and spiced dried beef. As they were eating the fire wasapproached by two men in the deep grey uniforms of the army of Kisan.

He was glad for the break. He wasn't used to being cooped up. He didn't make fires because the fire at Azure Keep was always lit. If it ever went out, well, Alex didn't want to think of that.

He smiled at Shey as she took the wood from him, then the smile faded for a moment as the hair on his neck stood up on end. His ears twitched as he listened. He was hoping it was just his new environment that was doing it.

Either of them really spoke as they ate. Alex picked at his stew, liking the vegetables, but wanting more meat. He wiped his face hoping he wasn't drooling at the thought of fresh kill.

"Is the stew to your liking?" She must have seen him drool.

"Yes, yes, it's fine, quite good." He smiled at her, then he froze. He felt their presence and stood quickly, his stew forgotten as it spilled to the ground. He quickly took his place at her side, whispering. "Friend or foe?"

He stood still awaiting her reply. Ready to change. Ready to protect. Ready to kill.

A small smile curled her lips and one hand reached out to pat Alex's "Friends, and good ones at that." Shey motioned the two men to the fireside " Come sit and join us. Dare I hope you brough me sand hare Lennix?"

Once alex and the men were again seated at the fire and the pair of sand hares that they had brough to the fire skinned and spitted, Shey began the introductions.

"Alex this is Markum and Lennix two of the Kisani Shadowguard. Boys, this is my beloved Alexandir Tigre. I'm taking him home to meet mother, Think he will survive?" This said in the spirit of a warm and friendly jest, as much to put Alex at ease with the strangers as to start conversation.

Markum smiled a bit "I dunno Shey, he looks kinda frail, yer Ma may just eat him alive."

Sheyleigh took a playful swat at him from across the fire and hissed "Hey now, dont be scareing him off!" She checked the roasting meat over the fire and turned to look at Alex. " Markum and Lennix saved my life once, I was being chased by the Kemrian Sea guard, over a misunderstanding about a pair of silver candlesticks, and had fallen into a sandlions trap. They pulled me out, and helped me sort out the problems with the guard, and have been like brothers to me since."

Alex sniffed the air smelling the roasting meat and wrinkled his nose. "I would prefer raw meat. Fresh and bloody after a kill." Alex winked at Shey before he glanced in the direction of their dinner guests. "Do you think one of these might do?" He poked at the one nearest him and as he poked he changed forms, his hand being replaced by a very large orange and black striped paw. He began sniffing them, his ears picking up Shey's feeble attempt at muffling her giggles. "Come on Shey, I'll only eat one of them."

"Now Alex," Shey tried to be as serious as she could. "We mustn't frighten our guests." Alex took that opportunity to lick one of them.

"But love, he tastes so good."

"Ok! Ok! Perhaps he isn't so frail!" Shey couldn't hold it any longer. She laughed hard. Alex too was laughing even after he made the change back to human. He kissed Shey on the forehead before sitting next to her.

"You must remember love, that I have 13 siblings. One must learn to take it as well as dish it out."

"Now I see Shey," Lennix said. "It was his humor."

"Acutally," Alex spoke, "It was my beautiful eyes." He turned and looked at them with white orbs, a flicker of flame in them that would be mistook for the reflection of the flames in the pit, and he laughed. Shey too joined in after noticing the befuzzled look upon their faces.

"Actually you are both wrong. It was his exceptional skill as a dancer." Shey covered a snicker with her hand as she said that, then began pulling the roasted hare from the fire and dishing it onto portions of hard bread and passing it around to the three men by the fire. "Lennix, what brings you two out here? You dont normaly patroll this stretch of the shadowsands."

Lennix frowned and took a momment to chew at the bread and meat he had been handed before answering "Actually Pet, we were sent looking for you. There are rumors of war leaking out of Kemria, and we thought it best you hear them before you got to the border."

Another few small bites of his meal were consumed under Shey's anxious gaze before he resumed speaking. " Word is Astorin is stirring in exile, and gathering forces. He's looking for a way back in, and the general does not think that the shadowguard will be able to do much to stop him. We are spread thin as it is just watching the borders and the royal family."

All through this exchange Markum simply nodded quietly watching the pair across the fire through the flames. " It really may not have been the best time to bring loverboy home to Ma, Shey. She is really upset about the puppet prince, thinks Astorin is gonna use him to get the throne back. I hope you brought her good news about the princesses?"

Sheyleigh sighed softly and slipped her hand into Alex's griping tightly. "I'm afraid not. The firstborn apparently is dead, leaving only a half grown daughter who knows nothing about Kemria. And the other, seems to have vanished years ago."

Markum and Lennix both simply shook their heads and continued eating in silence. Things were looking grim for Kemria and the soilders knew that did not bode well for Kisan and the shadowguard, pledged to guard Kemria as they would thier own lands.

He gave Shey's hand a squeeze. "I didn't come to meet her mother, I came to help Shey, and if need be, fight along side of her. I know this isn't a pleasure trip. Do not worry for my safety."

Alex knew that Shey and he would be worrying enough and that these two didn't need to know about the flames.

"I can hold my own in a fight, and am no stranger to war." he told them. "I am as much a part of Shey's world, as she is to mine." The corner of his mouth turned up in a smile.

"My words are not from a love-struck man-cub, but from one of a proud race. The race of Khan, and I will gladly lay down my life for Shey." He sat up straighter, if that was possible, a protective arm about her.

"Do you have a plan?"

Sheyleigh

A half wild giggle slipped from Shey's lips "Plan? The plan was for me to bring home the heir to the Kemrian throne, get her prettied up and sitting in her fancy chair, and get the puppet prince as mother calls him out of the palace."

"As you can see the plan didn't excatally work, and no one thought to make a back up plan. Actually thats not true, the back up plan was for us to have a civil war and all die remakably inglorious deaths. Does it sound like a good plan to you?" Shey leaned back into Alex's embrace with a sigh.

"The next step is to go talk to mother. Mother is the one in charge here. after that " She shrugs lightly the movement making her feathers rustle. "Len, Mark.. Feel free to share our fire for the night, Alex and I need to retire, I think we have things to discuss."

Shey sliped to her feet and offered Alex a hand up "Come on love, lets go plan on how not to get killed when mother finds out I failed."

"You didn't fail Shey." Alex said as he got up into the wagon. "Everyone assumed that the heirs would be alive, well, and easy to find. It's not a failure, just a miscalculation." He reached for her, kissing her in the forehead before holding her against him. "It's not your fault, my sweet. You had no way of knowing."

"You don't know Mother." she let out a nervous laugh.

"Well, I could always eat her..." Alex said with a laugh.

"ALEX!" Shey swatted him and couldn't help but giggle.

"You know I'm joking. I just wanted to hear you smile." he plopped down on the bed. "So, about a plan. Any ideas?"

Shey settled down next to him on the bed curling herself into his arms with her head on his sholder "Could we just run away to Azure Rose and never look back? We could let Markum and Lennix take the news to mother." She nuzzled a soft tender kiss to the spot where his neck and sholder met.

"Alex I really am scared at what mother may make me do. That girl, my cousins daughter.. didn't want to come back to Kemria with me. What if mother makes me take her?" A small shiver shook her at just the thought. "I dont know if I could do that. I mean she may have been born a princess of Kemria, but no one deserve to be stolen from their home like that."

Moments passed with Shey being thoughtful and silent, taking what warmth she could from being with Alex.

Alexandir Tigre

Alex took a deep, thoughtful breath before breaking the silence. "As I see it, we have three choices."

"One. We could run back to Azure Rose, always being watchful and looking over our shoulders for perhaps someone that your mother sends after you."

"Two. We can lie. Say the girl is dead. I mean, your cousin has made a new life, right?"

"Or three. We tell your mother the truth." He paused for a moment, stroking her hair before continuing."

"I don't believe in forcing someone to do anything, and that includes positions of status. The more you force someone, the more you push them away. If your cousin is made to come back, it is near certain that she will run away." He lifted her chin, his thumb on her cheek, gently touching the soft skin.

"I love you Shey, and I will support you, and be by your side no matter what you decide." Before she could answer, he kissed her softly, wishing that his kiss could somehow make this go away.

Sheyleigh

"Oh Alex, you are too wonderful for words." A heartfelt sigh accompanied that phrase. "I think, perhaps all things considered, we should let Markum and Lennix carry word to mother, and just turn round and head for home."

The foxling burrowed in his arms a hint of tears tracking down her cheeks " I'm worried about you, its still three days to the Kemrian shore, and well, I dont trust that what your mother gave you will be enough should something go wrong. And the fact that the shadowguard met us at the border means something is very likely to go wrong."

Decision made Shey seemed to rest easier. "Mother can send a messenger to me when they decide what to do about the girl, and we can decide what to do then."

Alexandir Tigre

A soft, deep purr emitted from him. "Then write your letter and if possible, we'll leave on the morrow. You might want to tell your mother where you'll be staying." he smiled. "Let her know that you'll be at Azure Rose Keep. She can send messege there." he paused "That is, if you want to come to the Keep with me and stay." He would let her ponder that.

"If you are that worried about me, I could always use Mother's flames before we start back. That would insure that I will be alright. I've been feeling tired. I know I can't hide it from you. I learned that already."

He was worried about her. He wasn't the only one that the venture had taken it's toll on. Truth be known, he was looking forward to getting back to the Keep and into a nice soft bed, and the thought of having Shey there with him made it long for it more.

"It's your move my love. The sooner the better. I too have an uneasy feeling."

Back at Azure Rose Keep there was more than uneasiness. Azure had become increasingly concerned for her long time friend, Mary.

"You grow weaker my friend. The longer Alex is gone..."

"Azure, you talk too much."

"And you still do not listen."

"I don't need you to tell me why I'm growing weak. Don't you think I know? Don't you think I'm worried? Don't you..."

"Mary." Azure's voice was calm, quiet. "You take too much upon yourself. We both know Alex, and we know that he would not use your flames unless he absolutely has to." Mary looked from the blue flames in the fireplace to her friend. "Mary. You did tell him those were your flames, didn't you?"

"In a sense I did. I told them they were my flames from here. Not that they were my flames. If I told him that, do you think he would use them? He's too much like his father. He would die first. We can only pray to Gaia that if he does have to use them that they get back here before..." her voice trailed off, eyes focusing once again on the blue flames.

Sheyleigh

Shey settled at the little table to write out the letter to her mother. "I don't know Alex, I think we should save the flames untill you really need them. I don't want to take the chance of using them to early and finding they are not enough to get you safely home. Your mother would probably kill me then." Pen scratched on paper as the report grew.

"In the morning I'll give this to Lennix, And we will turn right around and head back to Rhydin." A second of silence, pen on paper pausing in thought "Are you sure no one else will mind if I stay at Azure Rose with you?"

Report finished and sealed with a bit of carefully applied wax, the foxling moves back to settle on the bunk beside the tiger. "Can you hold out untill we make it back trough the shadowpass?"

Alexandir Tigre

He smiled to her. He knew the lamp was lit and he wished he could see what she looked like standing there, but he could only imagine it. Imagine the light basking her in it's glow.

"There will be no problem of me holding out. I just don't want you to worry so much, that's all. But, there is a way for me to conserve my energy, and that will be to assume my true form, to stay as a tiger until we're done with the crossing." He reached out and pulled her to him, cradling her against him. "As for the other. No, no one will mind. Azure adores you, Mother likes you as well." He kissed her softly on the top of her head. "And I love you. The decision is yours of course, but I would be honored if you would share the Keep with me." He closed his eyes and listened to her heartbeat, her breathing, his heartbeat, his breathing, and the wonderful rhythm they made together.

Azure came down the stairs from her tower, bringing with her some herbal tea of her own design for Mary. As the reflection of the flames from the great room came into view, Azure called to her friend.

"Mary? I brought you some tea. You must keep up your strength." The dragons voice trailed into silence at what she saw. Mary was still sitting, but slumped over, her breathing was shallow.

"Mother Gaia" Azure whispered. "Mary." She said her friends name softly as she lifted her head. Mary's eyes were wide open and she was cold, so cold to the touch.

"This is one time I wish your mate was here my friend. But since he is not, this will have to do." Azure called upon her own powers and a blue glow surrounded Mary, placing her in stasis until Alex came home, which Azure prayed would be soon.

"MOTHER!" Alex bolted up straight, panting. The brand over his heart glowing a bright blue.

Sheyleigh

Ok, that was not a good sign and Sheyleigh came very close to panicing. "Alex, beloved? Whats wrong?" A soft hand placed on his arm looking concerned. "Is there anything I can do?"

Alex couldn't do much more than moan weakly, "Mother..."

Not really understanding but knowing that something was wrong here, Shey tried to get Alex to lie back on the bunk "Rest darling.. I'll go harness the horses and get us turned for home right now. We can drive straight through as long as the horses can take. Just give me long enough to make the preparetions."

As soon as she was sure he was settled for the moment, and would stay there at least untill the shock wore off, she snatched up her report and jumped from the wagon.

"Mark! Len! Get yer butts up and help me!" The foxling was growing a bit frantic here, she could feel Alex's distress even outside the wagon.

"What's wrong Pet?" A sleepy eyed Lennix looked up from the fireside.

"Alex... somethings wrong with his mother and we need to get home.. fast" Shey sunk to a fireside log trembling. "Oh gods... This is bad Len."

The two soilders were up in and instant, Markum taking just an instant to give Shey a hug "Go back to your man. We can pack up camp and Len will head to your mother's and I will drive your wagon home, we can drive in shifts and get you home faster."

Shey nodded and headed back into the wagon settling beside Alex. "It will be alright love" a soft kiss to his cheek "God's I hope it will be alright."

Alex. Azure spoke quietly as she cast her spell, hoping that she could reach him. If you can hear me, listen carefully. The flames are not as you think. She kept it short. Alex would understand if he got the messege. She reached into the stasis field and touched the brand that Mary had, knowing that this was the link between this mother and son.

Gently he moved around Shey and takes the urn with the flames in it. With tears in his eyes he turned around clutching the urn against him. The brand over his heart glowed brighter with the urn next to it.

"Alex." Shey stood and placed a gentle hand on his face. "What is it?"

"The flames." Tears ran down his cheek onto Shey's hand. "They are not Mother's flames from the Keep. They are Mother's flames. She gave part of herself for me, and because of that, I fear for her."

"How do you know this?" Alex could feel her tremble slightly.

"Azure. Somehow she managed to touch me." He didn't know how to explain what he felt. He wrapped his free arm about Shey and just stood there with her.

"Once we start the crossing, I'll change forms to conserve energy." His voice was barely above a whisper.

Markum knocked on the wagon door before he slid back the panel and stepped inside. " Camp is broken, Len is on his way to Kemria, and I'm headed up to start us back to the border. You two try and get some rest I'm good till sunrise"

He moved across the wagon pausing to pat Alex comfortingly on the back "We'll get you home as quick as we can boy." Then he slid open the pannel to the drivers bench and climed up. Moments later the wagon started into motion.

Shey slipped her arms around Alex leaning so that her forehead was pressed to his chest, and her long soft wings were wrapped protectively around both of them. She could not think of a thing to say, so she just held him.

His voice when he finally spoke was shakey and broken. "I'm sorry Shey. I came with you to help you, and you end up having to take care of and help me." He could feel her wings flutter slightly around him.

His mind was racing with questions. He wondered why Mary would do this, or even yet, why Azure let her. He remembered a time, which now seemed a lifetime ago, when she did this for his father, Gato, and then he tried to help her and ended up almost dead himself, for he could not enter the flames. Alex knew what he needed to do when they got back, and prayed to Gaia for his mothers life.

"I'm so sorry." Were the only words that came to him, and he repeated them. As he did, a shimmer surrounded him as he changed from man to tiger, one large paw wrapped around the urn. He rubbed a large head gently against Shey.

Yes, he would remain in this form till they returned, for tigers don't cry. Or do they?

Markum drove the horses as hard as he dared towards the border. The team was well named, sturdy beasts ready to go Day and Night. He worried over the pair in the back of the wagon, afraid that even this steady progress would not be fast enough.

In the back of the wagon Shey sat on the lower bunk, tiger Alex's head in her lap. She was taking turns singing silly childrens songs and telling stories, doing everything she could to distract him. Gentle finger ran through the ruff of fur at his neck as she sang and tears slipped down her cheeks.

"Alex, after we get home, and make sure your mother is going to be well I want to give you those dancing lessons. I know we missed that harvest ball everyone was talking about, but I would still like to teach you." A faint blush colored her cheek asshe snuggled it down against the back of the tiger's neck "Besides, Dancing is an important part of the kemrian mating rituals."

Dawn broke outside the wagon and still the wheels kept turning and the horses pulling, lessening the distance between them and home.

Alexandir Tigre

Alex purred at her words and nuzzled against her. He knew that Shey would get them back to Rhydin and to the Keep come hell or high water. His worry however was not for himself but for his mother. Azure's magic was strong, but Alex knew that she could not heal Mary. Only Alex and his sister Kat could.

Jumbled dreams haunted his sleep. Dreams that made no sense as if he were looking through anothers eyes. There were dreams of his half sister Betsy and a fight. A fight between mother and daughter. A fight between Mary and Betsy. He saw the outcome of the fight. Mary's machete had found home, piercing Betsy's black heart.

How young his mother was. Her hair was brown. He had always seen it gray streaked. This was when she was young. But why would he be dreaming this? He let out a gutteral sound realizing, even in a dream, that Azure had linked him with his mother.

Alex curled tighter, squeezing the urn. Shey carefully removed it from him as she did not want to take the chance of it breaking. For all she knew, this was the link between Mary's life or death.

Blank eyes opened as the tiger let out a long breath, holding out a large paw to Shey. He needed her at that moment more than ever.

Alex woke with a start. His hand felt for Shey, but she was not there. He tilted his head listening, tufted ear twitched as he listened. He recognized three of the voices, one of them being Shey's, and the two men that had been traveling with them, but the last two he didn't know. A low growl began to form within the Kahn. He heard arguing and he would not let anything happen to Shey, not now, not when he finally knew what happiness was. Just as he thought of shifting Shey came into the wagon, laying a hand upon his.

"No, Alex. You must go home without me."

"Shey." He began to protest.

"Your mother needs you right now, and mine needs me." She took a step towards him, her arms wrapping around the neck of him, drawing him into a deep kiss. At first he was startled at her boldness, but melded with her as one. With tears in her eyes she broke gently away.

"Markum will take you back to Rhydin." She began to walk to the door of the wagon, holding his hand to the last moment. "We will dance when I get there. I promise." Hot tears streamed down her cheeks. "I love you Alex."

Through his own tears, as the wagon lunged foward, the man tiger whispered. "I love you, Shey."

Being parted from Alex was killing her. The days were spent in planning sessions with her mother, the nights spent tossing and turning missing him beside her.

Each night she would wake and begin a letter to him.

Dearest Alex,

I love you with all my heart,

She never got further than that, drifting off into tortured nightmares of Alex in pain and helpless, and her unable to help him.

The wagon rocked badk and forth as Markum pushed the horses onward. He was worried about the man tiger in the bar, for he knew he would have to rest the horses soon and he wondered what the cost would be to Alex.

In the back, the large tiger hugged the urg of flames, but Alex's dreams were not of his mother, but were of Shey. He longed for the sompler time when they first met, and hewanted to have that dance with her. He also felt guilt for not protecting her like he promised. I'm sorry I'm not with you now, Shey.

He felt something tug at it. It made it hard to breathe, and he woke up gasping.

"We're at the crossing Alex. We will rest as soon as we've crossed!" Markum yelled into the wagon.

The flames began to glow brighter as Alex's breathing eased. He felt the wagon stop but didn't get out. He wanted to be alone. To think, to gather his strength. He would need it.

Markum wondered around taking care of the horses and building a fire and finally sitting down with a mug of something strong and finding himself staring into the flames.

"Just how am I supposed to get to a Keep I cannot find? Answer me that?" He shook his head. "Great, he he has "me" doing it."

"I will guide you from here. Come, sleep, for on the morrow, you will be at "Azure Keep." Came a voice.

"Wait! Who are you?" His words were slurred, his lids heavy.

"I am Azure, now sleep Markum."

Inside the wagon, the tiger slept.
