Phillipe sat on the couch and studied the papers in his lap, glancing up every few minutes to make sure that he was still alone. His hands were shaking and deep worry lines were crossing his forehead. The papers he was holding had been stuck in the door when he had arrived home and he had brought them in when he came up.
Now as he sat in the main room of their apartment, Phillipe was consumed with grief and worry. His mind went to Aj and Alex, and now Savannah as she was living with them as well. He resifted the papers and read them again for the fourth time:
NOTICE TO TERMINATE TENANCY

and on that day you will be required to surrender possession
of the premises to the new Landlord.
Judicial proceedings may be instituted for your eviction if you do not
surrender possession of these premises on or before the date set forth

The above is the result of the sudden demise of Jeremiah Tennibrus and
the resultant passing of ownership to the rightful heir, Mr. Lohan
Tennibrus of Jenli, who will be arriving to auction off the entire building
to the highest bidder thereafter.

Phillipe had known Mr. Tennibrus fairly well, so he had not thought it strange that the gentle old man hadn't shown up at the shop in the last couple of days. After all, the man was known to often go fishing without telling anyone. His only son, who now lived in Jenli, was physically as well as emotionally distant and had rarely visited his father. When he had, the son had always seemed impatient to leave. The old father had had bragged about his son?s success and told Phillipe how he had left and made his fortune far to the north as a businessman. The old man seemed proud of his son, but Phillipe always felt that Mr. Tennibrus was unhappy inside when he spoke about Lohan, and he suspected that he missed his son?s presence and companionship. He knew that the old man had always hoped that his son would return and visit more often. Now, those visits would never come.
Phillipe was saddened by the news. He had really liked Mr. Tennibrus. He was a gentle man who took pride in his workmanship. He had begun teaching Phillipe the fine art of needlecraft and how to make fine clothes, but Phillipe was still only just a beginning novice at this point. Even if they did manage to find a new apartment, Phillipe knew that he no longer had a job either. What would they do now that his income had stopped? Aj?s job was a good one, but its pay was only modest and didn?t amount to enough by itself for all of them to survive.
He sat for a long time before finally coming to a decision. He couldn?t bring himself to tell Aj about this yet. He stood and walked into the bedroom. Lifting the corner of the mattress, he slipped the eviction papers under the edge. He would keep this to himself until he had spoken to the attorney who had obviously served the papers. He wasn?t about to allow Aj, Alex, and Savannah?s Christmas to be ruined because of this! He would find a way to convince the man not to sell their home. Maybe he could even make arrangements to buy it himself. Then he frowned. Who would sell to him if he were unemployed? He couldn?t run the shop downstairs by himself. He wasn?t even close to being able to do that yet. He shook his head. He would deal with that when the time came.
He returned from the bedroom and grabbed his coat. He was going to find and speak to this Teldor Mercer and see what he had for options.
The door closed and the apartment stood empty. Inside the bedroom, under the mattress sat the eviction notice, right next to A?js journal, which Phillipe had not seen nor knew about. If he hadn?t been so distracted, he would have caught a glimpse of it when he hid the papers, but he had been too frantic to notice it.
It took Phillipe only half an hour to find Mr. Mercer?s office. A few questions asked in the marketplace pointed him in the right direction. When he arrived, he was told that since he had no appointment he would be forced to wait until the man could see him. Another half hour passed before his name was called.
He entered the inner office and saw a small but neat gentleman sitting behind a large desk. He stood and offered his hand.
?Good afternoon, Mr Gaston. I am Teldor Mercer. I?m so sorry to keep you waiting.?
Phillipe returned the man?s greeting, somewhat surprised by the man?s friendliness. He had expected a cold response from someone representing Lohan Tennibrus.
?Thank you for seeing me sir.? Phillipe said softly. ?I?m sure you know why I am here?
?Yes?yes..? The man?s face saddened visibly. ?We were all shocked and saddened by Jeremiah?s death. He died alone on the dock where he fished so often. Heart attack is what the physicians say.? He paused, then regarded Phillipe carefully. ?He told me before he died that he held you in high esteem, Mr. Gaston. He had even decided to leave the building to you in his will. He came in here and asked for the changes a week ago. ? He face fell. ?Sadly, he died before the revised will could be signed and notarized.?
?But, but I don?t understand! You heard him say that he wanted to leave it to me!? Phillipe protested.
The man nodded slowly. ?Yes, but the will wasn?t signed yet, so it isn?t legally binding. The current legal will states that the building would go to his son, so that?s what I was forced to do.?
Phillipe pondered this for a moment before asking, ?Can I have Lohan?s address? Maybe I can talk to him and convince him to not sell, or maybe even to sell to me.?
Mr. Mercer sighed sadly. ?Unfortunately that would do you no good Mr. Gaston. You see, Mr. Tenibrus? son has already sold the property. He received an offer this morning right after I delivered the papers to your apartment.?
Phillipe?s eyes widened in shock and he gasped. ?To who????
Mr. Mercer shook his head. ?He didn?t tell me. He contacted me just a short while ago and told me to cancel the auction, since he had already sold the property.? He looked truly sad to be delivering the news. ?You will of course, still be able to stay until the 20th. I?m so sorry to be giving you such terrible news right before the holidays??
Phillipe sat stunned. ?So I have lost my home, and my job.?
Mr. Mercer shook his head sadly. ?It is a most unfortunate thing, I?m afraid.? He glanced at his closed door before leaning in close and speaking softly. ?I always thought Jeremiah?s son was a wicked, horrible man, only interested in himself.? He smiled sadly. ? Please understand that I am only representing his father?s estate in all of this. I have no choice.?
Phillipe smiled a sad smile and then stood, shaking the man?s hand again. ?Well, thank you for you time Mr. Mercer. If, by chance, you discover the name of the new owner, will you let me know??
?Of course sir! I will do that. Goodbye Mr. Gaston.?
Phillipe stepped back outside and moved slowly down the road. It had begun to snow. Soft flakes fell on him, but he didn?t notice. He was too preoccupied by the frozen knot of fear in his heart.
