No one had any idea where the baby boy had come from. Just dropped off one day at the hospital; no notes, no information. Just wrapped in a blanket and left in a waiting room. Not exceedingly strange, these things happened on occasion, but it wasn't necessarily normal, either.

The nurses had taken him to ICU to be safe, but he was found to be completely healthy, and evidently well taken care of. At least for as much as you could take care of a newborn before passing it along to it's fate.

He'd stayed there for a week while a search was carried out for possible parents. Nothing was turned up, not even one small clue. With the staff at a loss, and having been given a clean bill of health, the baby was passed off to the State. They placed him in a foster home to be cared for while adoption agencies sent hopeful couples to look at him.

It didn't take long. Alan and Rose Sterling, a psychiatrist and artist respectively, had been trying for three years without success. After two miscarriages, the two had been moved to look into adoption. The moment they laid eyes on the dark haired, blue eyed baby, it had been love. A few weeks later they were able to call him their own.

They named him Daigh Callum Sterling. Daigh, a name of Irish origin, was chosen just because it was liked. But it proved appropriate, as its meaning was 'blaze' and he was just that. A robust baby with a look of something akin to intelligence in his eyes. "He's just like a little man!" his mother would exclaim with a laugh. It was agreed he was perfect, and instantly became precious to the couple, who dreamed great things for his future.

They had no idea at the time how great those things would be.
