She walked with him. Not leading really just letting him get the feel for this realm as they made their way to the range. "You've never had to work with a bow. " She smirked at him. "I could see it your eyes, that's why I told you to put your gloves on, once your well trained with a bow it won't hurt as much to wield one or fire." As they came to the archery range it seemed that Thernae, also known as Skywhisper along with its magical quiver simply appeared upon her back. There were others there, guards, men at arms, warriors men and women young and old, firing off their bows at targets far and close. She looked at the gathered archers and to the gear they had for those training, not everyone owned their own fine bow.
There were long bows, short bows, cross-bows. Ones of human, elf and even magical make. "You're tall. "She looked at him, then picked a lovely bow from the wall where the gear was hung. "This bow is re-curved, so it makes it compact but strong." She handed it to him, it was made of dark wood. " A long bow in your hands would likely shatter, a short bow or cross-bow wouldn't do you much good. But this should suit you." She handed him a matching quiver full of white feather fetched arrows.
Zack looked to Sira as they started to walk side by side, before looking around as he let the magic of this realm flow through him and around him. Letting him get a feeling of it as she wished him to do so. " No I have not." Finding it a pointless choice to lie to the woman, as she would of easily seen through it. He nodded as she handed him the bow and quiver of arrows, with his brows rising to her mentioning that it had been made just for him. With him taking a moment to inspect the work done on it. "Thank you." Once again moving to follow her as he slipped the quiver of arrows to rest on his back.
She winked. "Lets go down to the end." She led the way along the grass. The field before them was the range there was the building they had passed was known as the gear building it held everything, bows, arrows, quivers, suits of armor, and hunting gear and clothing. Once they were away from prying eyes Sira looked off to the set up targets, they were what one might expect round circles of wood with a white and red target painted on them, they were no more than ten feet back.
"We start here, the kiddie ring." As she smirked at the name the others had given it. "All archers start here. " She pulled Thernae from her back, it was a long bow, different from his own. Hers was elven in make, light in tone, and had very lovely curves at the ends. It also pulsed with power. " Thernae is a magical bow, but I had to earn my way with it over time, though its magic makes it possible never to miss a shot, I had to learn its ways over time. Your bow is not magical but it it no different. I am going to show you how to hold it, how to draw and notch and arrow and maybe if you look like you can handle it how to fire a fire arrows."
Once again following her to where the lesson was going to take place, with him listening to her as she spoke, as well as taking in his surroundings. When they reached the first area where he was start his training with the bow, with a soft chuckle to the name it had been given. Not even bother to making a comment as he knew that it was fitting that he'd start our here, before turning his attention back to Sira as she started to explain her own bow. Which he looked at when she drew it, and took a moment to admire it's craftsmanship, before nodding once to show he understood.
She took a stance facing the row of targets. "Put the quiver on your back behind your left shoulder or centered. Then stand like me, look forward, feet slightly apart. Take the bow I gave you hold it up, your right handed so you will hold it with the left and draw back the string with your right." She showed him holding her bow in her left hand. "Look at my left hand how it holds the bow, tight but not too tight, an archer can use his bow as a weapon with more than an arrow. If a swordsmen came at me, and I had no time to notch an arrow I could use my bow as a shield and as a force to push back on him, or to slap it across his face, shoulder or torso, if he is unarmored."
She showed him those moves in slow succession then retook her stance facing the row of targets. "Feel the bow string with your right hand as you hold the bow with your left, feel how it is tough yet elastic it moves where you tell it." She ran her fingers down the length of her bow string and plucked on it as if it were a harp string. "The power in an arrow comes from the string, but all the power is in the bow. A weak bow will break under a powerful pull." She pulled back her bow string with no arrow and let go. "To every pull there is a range, as you learn more you will learn the range of your own given bow."
Once more he kept his attention on Sira as she started to explain what one could do with a bow as he looked to the targets, while shifting the quiver of arrows to be placed like she told him to do so. With him looking to how she was standing and shift his feet, as well as his stance to mirror her own. With him placing the bow in his left hand, as he nodded lightly. Now carefully testing the elastic of the bow string, putting that to memory but slowly let the string return to it's natural undrawn position. Another light nod to her explaining that each bow had a limited range. He then turned his attention fully back to Sira.
"Now watch me for a moment." She took her stance and focused on the targets, held her bow then pulled an arrow, her own were the same tone as her bow and fetched with speckled goose feathers. "An arrow is made to fly, you notch and arrow like this." She placed the arrow in her hand holding the end between her ring finger and middle finger. "There is a slight notch in most arrows at the end where a bow string can set, but some may not have it." Hers had only a slight notch.
"You set it back against the bow string pull back with your right arm keeping the tension in your fingers, but also staying a little loose, over tense fingers will be the death of any archer." She turned her body so he could see her form then she refaced the targets. "You pull back, keep your breathing even, take an intake of breath as you draw, then as you release let the breath go." She did so and let the arrow fly, it hit that target dead on with a flicker of magic. "The others all covered how breathing is important to magic, sword play and hand to hand, it is no different with bow work, a bowmen who holds his breath will not long survive a fray."
"Now, lets see you go through the paces, take your stance, and then maybe if you seem ready we can let one or two arrows fly."
Tilting his head as he watched her with his own bow now resting at his side, as he watched each and every move she made. With a light nod to her comment about an arrow being made to fly as well as most having a notch for the bow string. He also took note of which two fingers she used to draw the string back as well as to hold the arrow in place. Another light nod to her telling him how to draw it back, and to find a perfect match between holding the arrow tight but not to tight, as he took note of how she held her bow and the now notched arrow.
When she turned back to the targets again, and when she mentioned to take a slow breath when one draws back the bow string, then release it at the same time as the arrow is sent down range. He nodded lightly to that as that as well was put to memory, with him watching as she hit the bull's eye. Another nod to her mentioning how breathing went hand in hand with everything, before looking to her when she wanted him to give it a try.
Slowly he moved into position, as he shifted his stance in to the one that Sira told him about before reaching back to draw an arrow from the quiver upon his back. Slowly notching it after a moment or two, as he didn't look down while doing it. As it was something that she didn't need to tell him. That in the heat of battle, there would be no time for someone to look down. It would all have to become a natural feeling, as he hadn't drawn the arrow back yet. With him letting his mind play over the steps over and over in his mind, before he lifted the bow and slowly drew the arrow back in one near flawless union.
Now holding that arrow in place as he started to slow his breathing down, as he focused on one of the targets to allow himself to sight along the arrow. Once he felt he was ready. He let that arrow fly at the target, and watched at it would hit, but it wasn't a bull's eye. It hit in the middle ring of the target, getting him to tilt his head just slightly. As he played in his mind what happened, before he gave it another try. Doing so before Sira had a chance to say anything, as he moved through the steps again, with a very slight shift to his stance and frame.
Another arrow sent at the same target, with slightly better results as he hit closer to the bull's eye. Yet he didn't seem put off by his lack of skill in the bow at the moment, as he already knew that it would take time to learn how to hit it each time. It would also take time to learn how to place magic into the arrows to make them deadlier. Lowering the bow now as he looked to Sira, with his brows rising to see what her reaction would be.
Sira watched as he went through the paces she had showed him. He was a good student he took his time, let his breath guide him and even when he let the arrow fly and it didn't hit the bulls eye he didn't stop. He took the paces again and let fly. "Closer and closer. The bull's eyes is just something archers love to talk about. Not every shot will hit the main mark, but in battle you may not always aim for the center, you may aim for the arm or leg of an enemy to slow him, or even stop him if the arrow shot is true. Yes aiming for the heart will be a sure kill, but sometimes you may need a hostage."
She grinned at him. "Over time you will learn how to feel your bow as you feel the earth and all other things, and sooner or later you will either imbue your bow with magic or have one made with magic for you. Your a creature made of magic, and though a normal bow would suit you. I can see you with one more like my own."
Zack nodded softly to Sira again as she started to speak again, as he took note that one could use an arrow to either kill or to stop a target. To slow them down and if need be, take them as a hostage. He already knew what those could be used for, but continued to listen to her words. Another light nod to her saying that it would take him time to learn how to use the bow he was given to it's fullest extent, with a glance to the bow that she held when she mentioned that she could see him with one like it.
She kept her eyes on him but her hand drew, notched and fired two arrows. She didn't even look down their range nor even at her bow, quiver or hand. The arrows flew and one hit on either side of bull's eye on the target furthest away, there was a zap of power when she drew and fired and a zap of power when the arrows hit, if it had been something living the target would have been electrified, as it was the target looked like it had been struck with lightning.
When she once again moved to fire off two more arrows herself. He took the chance to pay more attention, as he watch as she was fluid in her motions as she drew, notched and fired off the arrows. Taking note that she didn't look at the arrow, or downrange when she sent the arrows towards the target. However. He did feel the faint hint of magical energy when the arrows were fired, and when they hit the target. With a faint hint of a smile to it being lightning used to empower the arrow.
"Take a few days, practice on these targets, then we will move to the moving targets. Your hands will build up callouses, even with gloves on." She held up her hands they were soft and lady like on one side and the palms of a warrior at the other. "Hard as steel." She winked. "In a few days we will go back to training for both earth and bow, for today, we are done. Enjoy Sim'Tahl and all it has to offer, seek out other warriors, mages and archers. So much to learn." She clapped him on the shoulder and walked off towards the other archery range.
"I will do just that, and I am looking forward to learning more from you Sira." Smiling to her as he nodded to her words that his hands would eventually get some callouses, even with him wearing his gloves. That would be fine with him, as he looked at her hands, and took note that one side was what one would expect of a lady's hands. Soft and smooth. With the other side being what one would expect of a warrior and one that was used to working with their hands.
Another light nod to her words, with another smile to the teasing wink. He was starting to get used to that as well. His teachers had been strict with him, yet they also had that gentle side that shined through. "I will see you again in a few days, Sira." A glance around for a moment to her telling him to enjoy her homelands, which was something he had planned to do, once he had a few days off to fully explore. Gaze moved back to Sira again with a soft nod. "That would be a wise idea, and thank you again." Another smile and bow of his head to the clap to his shoulder, before looking downrange again at the archery range he now stood, and took her advice on firing off a few more arrows. Getting just slightly better each time.
