The stillness of the night was interrupted by the rumble of distant hoof beats from galloping horses. The sound grew louder as the four black horses pulled the carriage through the streets of Rhydin. Slowly, the carriage rolled to a stop in front of the Red Dragon Inn. The two carriage men climbed down from their seats. One went to open the door while the other fetched the passenger?s luggage.

The moonlight shown on the small, feminine figure who appeared in the doorway; her features hidden by a full-length cloak. Her slipper-clad foot touched the ground, and she knew in that instant this was where she belonged.

The smell of the night air sent a flood of memories through her mind - joys and sorrows - all mingled together. She stood there for a moment taking it all in. Then the tears began to well up in her eyes, some for the pain and suffering, others for happiness of being back.

As she neared the Inn door, she hesitated. ?Would there be anybody that she remembered or someone who would remember her?? she thought. She would soon find out as she opened the door and entered. Quietly, she walked into the Inn. Her gaze slowly moved about the room to look at the faces of those who had gathered that night. Not recognizing anyone, she made her way to the bar.

Waving down the bartender, she inquired about securing a room for a undetermined amount of time as well as getting a bottle of Scotch to take to her room. After getting her key, the bartender told her the room was upstairs and to the right. Tired as she was, she retired to her room taking a lit candle with her. A young boy followed behind with her luggage.

Once in the room, she gave her thanks to the boy while handing him a small sack of coins and sent him on his way. She looked about the room to find another candle to light. As her eyes began to adjust the dim candlelight, she smiled as she looked about the room. This would do for the time being.

Unpacking her things, the room began to feel more like home. She hung up the few gowns she had brought with her and placed her other things in the wardrobe in the room. At the very bottom of a package she had stopped to get on the outskirts of town, she found a small book...a journal...her journal. It had been such a long time since she had seen those worn pages.

Slowly, she opened the book and leafed through the pages. Her life had changed so much since she had last written in it. Once again, the emotions flooded her mind and soul. She knew there would be a time to deal with her past but for now it was time to begin her life again. Here in Rhydin.

The sides of her mouth curled up a bit to form a soft smile as she thought 'and life will never be the same for me or those in Rhydin.'
