(the text/ad I wrote with it is this:
"The problem with books is that they end."
Have you ever fallen so in love with a set of characters, a setting, or a story that you kind of hated finishing that last page, found yourself wondering what happened next?
Rhydin is a world where virtually anything goes. Ever wanted to be an astronaut? A medieval knight? A ghost? A cat? Waiting on your letter from Hogwarts? Ready to make something totally new?
Whether you write on your own in the forums or throw yourself into one of the live settings just to see what happens, join us. Be prepared to care super unreasonably about things that don't actually exist, to be moved to tears --or hysterical laughter-- by scrolling words on a screen, to make some really great friends you may never meet in person, and...say goodbye to sleep basically forever.
The thing about books is that they end. Collaborative writing never has to. Come see. )
OOC Commentary/Explanation:
I started with characters Saila knows, has encountered or sees a lot and traced them back to the worlds/stories/genres they come from. The Shadowhunters, the Roma Gypsies, the Elder Scrolls, World of Darkness - Vampires, Werewolves, etc. I even have the Mandalorian symbol up there for her "Favorite Alien", Melanie (Fourth). From there I branched out to all the different genres I could find appropriate symbols for.
This is where I learned that Polyvore has a fifty item limit. I very nearly had a nervous breakdown about it, given that I'd been working on it for more than a week, until Cane's player shared a work around with me. (thank you again, bb!)
Then I discovered that the workaround ate so much of the quality out of my images that you can't even tell what half of them are anymore. (Boooo). At that point there was only a few hours left to get the contest entry in and I was super tired of fighting it, so I reworked what I could and then let the rest go. If you want to see the images I picked more clearly (and you really should because I put a lot of work into it! And if you're reading this there's a Very Good Chance your character - or some element of your character - is represented here, see if you can find yourself!) go here.
A note on the images themselves, this is where I have to thank Sal most profusely, for knowing goddamn everything. I learned more about AD&D than I ever knew there was to know from that player, and Sal's writer was enormously helpful with uncovering the basis behind some other chars as well. Plus the whole generally being outrageously supportive and encouraging thing that Cane and Sal have both had going on since I first joined this site and.. yeah. Thanks guys! <3 <3
While I'm on that subject, I also need to thank Hex's player, for providing the holes in my knowledge. I know virtually nothing about anime and very little about most video games, so that writer's help also proved instrumental. Sal -- Hex even figured out where the cat people came from! That's on there, too. :)
Also! The cartoon bubble quotes on the image are things that Saila actually said (...to Sal, actually...) in the RDI re: Andu and Icer when she first got to Rhydin.
***edited to add*** I forgot to say! The quote in the middle that is the basis of the whole concept. It's a Salvador Dali quote IRL, but it's also the thing Cane said to Saila that --finally-- made Rhydin make sense to her. It truly made all the difference in how she handles new information and is adjusting to life in general.
