It had been far too long.

Gone were the days of the multitude of guilds and wars. Gone were the days of getting into battles were the prize was one's freedom.

Praise the gods

Were things far simpler or more complex, that remained to be seen. All that matter was that she had come back to the first land she ventured into upon leaving the vale.

Would people remember her? She hoped for the most part the answer was no. Her past was colored by who she once allowed close to her. Things best left forgotten.

She wondered if her daughter was still in these lands or her dearest shayana. Still, she had a chance to begin anew and shape her life into something worth remembering.

And these lands needed much healing...

She pushed magic bleached strands from her face as she arranged her living quarters to her liking. She had found a small unoccupied manor house in the West End of the City. The gold she had hoarded as part of her portion from the uth Dravon's meant that she could live comfortably for a short time.

That also meant she would have to find employment somewhere... suitable to her temperament. Perhaps teaching her magics, ley lines and node use might be something to look into. She would have to research the available academies and schools and see if there was one that stood out.

And that was how she found the notice about the kidnappings at Ravensheart Academy.

There was only so much verbal slapping one can take before the target gets fed up and leaves. The Headmaster was kind enough but the two women that seemed to rule the academy were not people she would want to associate with, much less work with.

So she was out of options, alone and quite angry, though she had reigned it in until she was home, such as it was. Home was a townhouse with a tiny yard in the back...

She settled into a chair and let the tears fall.

Count Talomar Longden had left the meeting not long after Shariane departed, and he followed behind to her townhouse. Why did she have a familiar scent? Why did he feel that he knew her in ways he shouldn?t?

Those questions bothered him.

He was going to find out the answer.

Talomar stood behind a tree and watched as she went into a townhouse. She seemed to be alone ? very alone.

Shariane had been inside the home for about 5 minutes when the Count entered through a window and stepped out of the shadows behind her. She was in a chair and crying.

His words were deliberately soft and comforting, carrying an unnatural power. ?Why do you weep, woman? It can?t be all that bad.?

?Why do you weep, woman? It can?t be all that bad.?

She was on her feet like a shot and drawing power to her as a matter of instinct. She recognized him from the meeting and recognized the touch of her wingsib on him. Yet she was wary, she did not know him and he was in her territory.

The way the power came to her call was familiar to him. "Who are you and why have you invaded my home?"

Her cheeks were still wet with tears but that was pushed aside.

"Who are you and why have you invaded my home?"

He could feel the power being drawn into her and it excited him. It was the same type of power he had felt with Firesong.

?I?ve not invaded, dear lady,? he responded softly with a smile and slow title of his head. ?The way was open to me.? It was a truth that was stretched.

Talomar took a step forward.

?I felt something familiar in you, and I was wondering why.?

Another step forward.

?Oh. First, I should introduce myself. I?m Count Talomar Longden, at your service, m?lady.

Shariane

She knew she felt trace of her wingsib's power on him, but she had to wonder friend or foe?

The temperature of the room seemed to drop noticably as he drew closer to her. "Familiar.. How so?" She wanted to hear what this Count would say. Though Shariane tended to be the polar opposite of her wingsib.

Where she was fire, Shariane was ice... and the temperature dropped some more. One more step closer and she appeared to be enveloped by a frigid blue aura. The air misted before her with each exhale.

Damn it was growing cold.

Talomar Longden

Talomar, being a Master Vampire and one of the kindred, was not affected by cold as much as a mortal might be. Nevertheless, he didn?t like it, and he had no intention of giving her any reason to bring forth her power to a greater degree.

Talomar took several steps back. ?I?m sorry to have disturbed you, m?lady. That was not my intention. My only desire was to see just how we might be ?connected?, and perhaps to offer some support over what had happened at the meeting. I see now that while my intentions might have been good, my actions could have been more carefully thought out, and perhaps avoided such a ?cold? reception.

?I?ll take my leave, now. Perhaps you?ll do me the honor of a conversation at some other time.? He smiled and gave a small bow and turned toward the door, anxious to get to a warmer place.

She may have over-reacted. Instinct had kicked in when the temperature dropped. Now reason took over the the temperature raised noticeably.

Her words called out to him, "Connected how?" She did not know him, but still she could almost feel her touch.

"You know her, don't you? You know my wingsib?" She had to ask, had to know. She was well and truly tired of this place already and being left alone. Rhydin was not a kind place, never was.

"Connected how? You know her, don't you? You know my wingsib?"

Count Longden stopped at the door and turned back to Shariane, ?The ?how? and the ?who? is what I came here to find out. I was hoping we could discuss this together, yet at this point I don?t even know who you are??

He smiled, ?In fact, I?ve even failed to introduce myself. Please pardon my error. I?m Count Talomar Longden, and I certainly mean you no harm.?

He waited to see if she would permit him to stay, or if he should leave. He was not going to force the issue. It would have to be her choice.

What now interested him was this ?wingsib? that she mentioned. He wondered who that might be.

A name for a name, a fair bargain she thought as she gestured to him to have a seat. Whatever had been bothering her was momentarily forgotten. "Shariane uth Dravon is the use name I carry now."

She settled into her chair without waiting to see if he would accept the seat offer. "Wingsib is what we use to describe the relationship... More like sisters or closer." She said softly, "I've been gone so long, I just hope she has not forgotten."

She looked at the devastatingly handsome Count. It was not that she did not admire his looks, but she was careful now not to be swayed by a pretty male face with power. "Her name is Firesong..."

Let's see what bells that name rings.

Talomar was just about to sit when Shariane mentioned the name of Firesong. It caused a short pause in his movement, but he regained his composure quickly and settled into the chair and crossed his left leg over his right knee in a relaxed posture. It all suddenly made sense. He knew Firesong would enjoy man or woman, and from looking upon Shariane he certainly couldn?t argue her taste in women. Sharianne was magnificent ? pale as the duskiest lily?s leaf, smooth-skinned with bare throat made to bite, too wan for blushing, and too warm for white.

He tapped his fingers on the arm of the chair and just cast an admiring look upon her.

?Well, Shariane uth Dravon, that little bit of information has solved the mystery. It seems that you and I are connected through your wingsib. You see, Firesong and I have been quite close ? in many ways.

?I wonder what that makes you and I?? He smiled at the lovely woman.

She returned the smile, though she didn't seem swayed by the darkly handsome man before her. "The barest of acquaintances, my lord Longden..."

She closed her eyes, though that smile had taken on a teasing quality. "At least until we can get to know each other better." While not spoken, the question hung there. She had visibly relaxed by then.

Shariane had been known to enjoy men, but Firesong was the only female she had connected with on so many levels even before becoming what she is today. She had known her long before and hoped that there was still something there.

"The barest of acquaintances, my lord Longden..."

He had to laugh at that; it was the perfect response. He was actually started to enjoy this little visit.

"At least until we can get to know each other better."

He nodded once and looked her over. ?I think that?s possible, but tell me how long has it been since you?ve seen Firesong? You really should try to see her again while you?re here.? He was really becoming impressed with Fire?s taste in women.

?I think that?s possible, but tell me how long has it been since you?ve seen Firesong? You really should try to see her again while you?re here.?

She sighed softly, "It has been years. When last I knew, she and Talisa had hooked up."

It truly had been years. Since that night in the vale. The only night they had had between them. Did she regret the years? Perhaps.

"I would love to see her again."

Perhaps indeed.

Talomar showed the faintest of smiles as he rose from the chair. "In that case, Shariane, I shall visit with Firesong and inform her that you have returned. I don't think you'll have to worry about Talisa, and I'm sure Firesong will be very pleased to learn of your return."

He turned and headed for the door, pausing only to say, "It was a pleasure to meet you, Shariane. I'm sorry to have intruded in your home."

He bowed, turned and was gone.

Shariane

And before she could say anything else, he was gone. Like most of the men in her life, here today, gone tomorrow.

She shook her head and made her way to her quarters. She stripped from the outfit she was wearing and donned a robe. The robe was ornate with intricate beadwork and crystals. It was one of the few things of home that she remembered.

She frowned and opened a gate them. Would it still be there? Her personal vale?

She stepped through with her heart in her throat. The vale still stood. It was not pristine, but it still stood. It would take some work, but she needed this little place of peace.

With her arrival the first of the vale's caretakers emerged from their shelters. The little lizard like creatures had taken to caring for their homes and families first. Now that one of the inhabitants has returned, they slowly emerged, rather happy to see her well.

At least she had some sort of welcome here. It did not take long for a hot spring to be prepared and food to be found. She needed the warm water to soothe her frayed nerves and tired spirit.

Was returning to these lands a good idea? That question ran through her mind. At this moment it was not looking good at all. She did not expect anyone to want her around at all.
