Prologue - Disagreements:

Mihaela was sprawled in the boneless fashion upon a rock. She was intent on enjoying the weather while it was peaceful. To this end she had taken her panther form. People were less likely to bother her in this form and it gave her the peace to consider how off-balance she has been.

Chas had left his sister at home with her beau, his own need for some herbs for his latest recipe attempt driving him from the isle and into the city. The Marketplace had most of what he needed but the last one came from a more natural area, the glen itself. He didn't realize Mihaela had chosen this place to sun herself until he got closer, booted feet making almost no sound as he strode across the grass.

Ears twitched on the black furred form and she scented the air. A soft purr come from her. He didn't go for the herbs first. Instead he adjusted his path to intersect with the rock the large feline was sprawled on. As he approached, he murmured, "Enjoying yourself?"

She purrs in answer and moves slightly to nuzzle him. So much has been going on that has the potential to hurt both him and his sister, and she was questioning her decision to stay quiet. He grinned and scritched her behind her ear, large fingers working through her fur to give her a nice rub.

Oh, now that was welcomed. She purred all rumbly happy like.

Another chuckle. "You'll pay me to stop sometime tomorrow, right?"

There was a rumble resembling a chuckle and she nuzzled into his fingers.

"I'll never get any work done if I keep this up."

She moved to stretch in that boneless manner of a cat before leaping off the rock to land near a pile of clothes. He let his hand fall away when she moved, eyes following her until he figured he knew what she was about to do. Then he averted his eyes, seeking out the plant that he'd come to the glen for.

She shifted forms and had to shake her head his he averted his eyes. She pulled on the short shorts and the t-shirt that was lying there before speaking, "I swear you need a girl friend, Chas."

He rolled his eyes a little at that. "Why?"

"Either that, or you need to loosen up a bit." She watched him move. "With what we are, I would have figured nudity didn't bother you."

His eyes swung back to her. After a moment, he replied. "Staring isn't appropriate regardless of what who is." A faint flicker of a smile appeared and then faded.

"Staring isn't, true." She smiled lightly, "But then it's very natural state."

"Yes, I know." He shifted the strap of the bag he carried higher over his shoulder, a glance moving away from her once more. "I didn't realize you'd be here. I didn't mean to intrude on your quiet time."

"It's alright, Chas. You are not intruding."

Another faint smile and then he moved off a few feet. "You sure? I don't need Damon getting a bug up his butt for anything, you know."

She chuckles softly, "Damon knows whose bed I'm in every night. He likes being growly protective."

"He likes being growly." He didn't pause until he was near the plants he'd spied. They weren't too old and seemed hearty enough for what he needed them for. He knelt down, swinging the bag to the ground. "If he can't growl, he's not happy."

She chuckles softly, "That's him. Still he'd give his life for the pard if it came down to it. We all have our scars and memories."

He paused in harvesting the herbs, almost looked back at her. He didn't though. After a moment he continued the careful removal of only certain fronds. "I know."

She stretched in that way of hers. "I expect Van's been chaffing at my recent restriction."

"I suspect she's enjoying it as a means to spend more time with Lucas."

She chuckled softly, "There's that. Though Lucas doesn't qualify as an Alpha."

He had to chuckle. "No, definitely not an alpha."

"Though I really wish you would take backup with you." She said softly. She couldn't restrict his movements, but she would ask him.

A glance this time did shift from the herbs back to Mihaela. "What sort of backup, Miheala? I doubt Damon is the sort to enjoy shopping and I don't know that Akiko would enjoy babysitting."

"Akiko might enjoy the shipping if you include pretty things. And there is Shari." She pointed out. "I just want you to be careful."

"I guess I'm just a bit focused when I have to spend money." He gave a little nod. "I'm careful."

"There maybe trouble brewing with the leeches. This is why I am taking extra precautions, Chas."

His brow arched a bit. "Oh? What about the grand and glorious treaty?"

"New players to the game." She was serious looking, "Looks like there's some politics that is bringing vampires that Talomar doesn't know about."

"Nice." He shook his head, attention back on the herbs as he rolled his take in parchment for the journey home. Once rolled, he tucked it inside a leather pouch and this was settled into his pack. "I'm sure he'll love that."

"I'm sure. I'm also sure these are leeches he would not want to tangle with either."

"I didn't think there was anyone he would be wary of."

"More fool he be."

He didn't pursue that. Chas turned, looking up at Mihaela. "I'm careful."

Just something he her look spoke volumes, "I'll make sure Van is safe too."

He nodded, eyes dropping away. "Thanks."

"Though I wish you would stop being such a hermit."

"I'm not. I'm," he thought for a second then continued. "I'm focused."

She chuckled, "So focused we rarely see you."

He shifted his position, going from half kneeling to sitting almost crossed legged. "Sorry."

"We're family, Chas. We all look out for each other."

"I know we do. I look out for others."

"I know you do, Chas. And we're looking out for you too."

"Van mentions that often."

"She had to grow up fast in the worse possible ways. "

"I'm well aware of that."

She eyed him a bit, "And so did you..."

He pressed his lips together briefly before murmuring, "She had it worse."

She nodded, "(vq) I know all too well." Her left hand rubs at long faded scars.

Rachael walked down the path towards the glen exploring her new domain taking in the scents and getting familiar in her new surroundings.

"I don't like thinking about it."

"I know, Chas. We all have our ghosts from that time. Mine still wake me up in the middle of the night." His attention shifts from Mihaela to sweep the glen, taking stock of who could be seen in that moment. While his gaze wandered, he replied, "One day they won't."

She nodded, "It has been getting better with time and support. That is the key there, support."

She scented Mihaela and Chas from the night she'd first arrived and then caught sight of them talking, deciding that it might not be in her best interest to interfere she waved a bit staying clear for the time being.

His lips clamped shut again, unwilling to go down that path. The motion caught his attention and for a moment he had no idea who the woman waving was. Recognition came eventually, however. His chin lifted in an upnod of acknowledgement.

She smiled at Racheal." Chas, We are here. I am here if you ever want to talk. Alright?"

Mihaela

He nodded at Mihaela. "I know."

There was a mischivous glint in her eyes, "You better, or I'll tell Damon you were watching me bathe..."

Racheal smiled a bit and walked on down towards the lake.::

His brow lifted. "Are you trying to get me in trouble?"

She chuckled softly, "I'm teasing."

"That sort of tease could threaten my life, I think."

"I wouldn't do that, Chas. 'Sides, the day I can't take care of myself..." She shrugged then, though the teasing tone was replaced by a serious one.

"We're all aware you can take care of yourself."

She sighed softly, "Okay, I can't joke."

"I didn't think you ever joked about safety." His tone was still bland, yet a twinkle somehow glimmered in his silver-grey eyes.

She shook her head and thwaped his arm, "Brat!"

He made a show of rubbing his arm. "Oww! Abuse! Abuse! Help help!"

She moves to tickle him. The tease left his voice when she made that all-too-familiar move. "Oh god no!" He tried to avoid but she was the faster and more agile of the two.

She chuckled softly, but stopped, "Ticklish, eh?"

He'd launched himself a bit to the side to avoid her. When she stopped, he stayed stretched out but propped up on one arm in a casual type posture. "Me? No."

She grinned and made a move to tickle again. So he flinched, so what? This time she didn't stop either. He figured she would! Ack! He tumbled back, trying to stop her hands. "Hey ... hey hey, now!"

She giggled and stopped a moment. It was as innocent as two siblings playing.

"Gahh!" He shook his head, shaking a finger at her. "You are trying to give Damon a reason to gut me."

She smiles innocently, "Nah, besides I know how to distract him."

"I bet you do."

"I should probably find him. I do want you to be careful." She moved to stands at that point.

He watches her move, eyes following her as she stands. "Enough dallying?"

"I'm heading home to be lectured for venturing out alone" She winked.

"Enjoy."

She shook her head, "Thanks much." And then grinned.

"You just want the make-up sex."

"You know it."

He didn't comment on that. Racheal lay back on the ground and crossed her arms under her head closing her eyes and lazing about under the sky.

"What can I say. I'm a cat."

That got a nod from Chas.

She tilted her head at him, "Bothers you?"

That earned a shrug, eyes shifting away. "No use pondering it, really."

She sighed softly, "But it's bothering you all the same?"

"Isn't there a saying about spilled milk?"

She regarded him a moment, "Take us back to my early point about isolating yourself."

His eyes turned upward to rest on her. "What?"

There was a probing look returned, "You can't shut out everyone like you do. You miss opportunities."

"What sort of opportunities?" Skepticism laced his words.

"You were the one commenting on spilled milk. Last I knew, you weren't interested."

"Interested in what?"

"You tell me... since you seem to be bothered about me and Damon."

He looked rather surprised at that. "I'm not bothered by that. I don't like what I ... am."

Understanding dawned. "Is that why?"

After a wee pause, his shoulder lifted in a vague shrug.

"I look at it this way. I have come to accept this side of me. I didn't ask for it, or the responsibility it brought. But in many ways the good outweighs the bad."

He shrugged again, eyes wandering away.

"Chas..." She sighed softly, "We are surrounded by all the things that go bump in the night. We are the ones with this beast within us. We can either accept it and keep it under control, or fight it and pray you are strong enough to win."

"Accepting it doesn't mean you have to like it."

"No it doesn't. I respect the power it brings. I refuse to play the monster though. And this side has brought me joy than pain of late."

"I'm glad for you. You deserve your joy."

"By that I mean you ,Van and the others." She looked at him seriously now.

"I know." He drew in a breath then slowly exhaled. "You seem to flourish in the role."

"Before this, it was Me and Vik trying to make ends meet and still stay honest."

He let her talk; he wasn't sure what to add.

"Don't let it shut you off from everyone else."

He'd heard that before. He nodded. "Yeah, okay."

She gives him the look, "That translates to I'm just saying yes to get you off my case."

He groaned. "Mihaela, what do you want me to say? Yeah sure, lemme run off and tag the first skirt I see?"

"No, because we both know that you don't know what you'll catch that way." She tilted her head, "Open up to us more at the very least."

He rubbed a hand over his face. "Okay, Mihaela."

She changed the subject, "Saw you guys helping get Shari settled."

"Yeah. She needed a hand."

She nodded, "She's another one I have to talk to about isolating herself."

"Should we call you cupid?"

She arched a slender brow, "I'm not matchmaking in this case. She has her little corner and pretty much stays there."

He gave a sage nod back. "Yes, a heinous sin. You should teach her the error of her ways."

She shook her head. "Okay fine, I get the hint." She focused a look on him, "I suppose I'm the only one that gives a damn, eh?"

"That's not it at all, Mihaela."

She shrugged, "Oh really? Think I don't notice when someone is brought in and them promptly left to her own devices surrounded by strangers?"

"Are you saying that her not getting out is my fault?"

She shook her head, "No. Forget I said anything. I failed as host here."

His lip curled a little then, with a sigh, his irritation was put under control. His voice was neutral when he spoke. "Don't worry. I won't ask you to be hostess again." Chas vowed not to offer anyone else to pass a night on the isle. It had been a bad move from the start, apparently. He'd only been trying to be nice to someone who seemed to need a bit of nice and then things just went all out of control. Somehow he'd hurt their guest and now Mihaela. So much for the Good Samaritan theory.

"I'm sorry, I'm am tense and we had someone brought into the house that didn't need to be dropped into a group of strangers. She's hurting as much as we are."

"I know. I made a mistake."

"She isn't Pard, so the others have no reason to trust her, Chas." She looked at him seriously, "She has been very helpful but."

"I know, Mihaela. I made a mistake."

"We'll cope. We always do..." She moved towards town. A Badsider or 3 was sounding good right about now.

He watched her go, eyes following although he didn't turn his head at all. Once she was a good distance away, he sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose.

The First Meeting:

Syndel roused herself from her slumber in the upper levels of Teas ?n? Tomes. For some reason, she had not found her way back to her haven. Was she tired of the casual encounters? It was a question that had plagued her when she was not reading or painting. She had chosen a chair to curl up in and there she remained until she had returned to *life.* She rested in the chair, she allowing the murmur of voices to seep into her consciousness. With a sigh, she picks up the large tome and starts reading it.

Since a particular scent did not stop here, Chas chose the Teas to duck into. This would be good a place as any to shrug off the conversation he'd had in the glen. He wasn't ready to go back to the isle just yet. Not in this mood. He stepped in, the bell doing that irritating cheery ring thing it always did. Silver gray eyes flicked up to the bell then fell forward as he moved toward the glass case.

Her ice blue eyes looked down to the main part of the store and stopped on the familiar form. Zach's brother...

He didn't have to really give his purchase much thought. It was usually the same. A couple of turnovers and a large mug of hot tea to wash them down. He indicated the peach turnovers this time and then fished out the money to pay for the goodies. While the girl fetched the order, he glanced around real quick. It didn't occur to him to look up though.

Those eyes softened as she looked at him. She could see what Zach might have looked like had he been given a chance to live. She was careful not to announce her presence just yet as she wanted to look unhindered.

As he took the items, he fobbled the turnovers trying to get a napkin and then nearly lost the tea trying to catch the pastries. An apology and a laugh was exchanged with the girl behind the counter. They exchanged a few words and then he tried again, taking the napkin first and stuffing it into his pocket then reaching for the plate and then the tea with his other hand. He turned, giving another glance around before choosing an empty chair near the main window.

She watched him move to the window and could see what Natasha had seen in the boys, as reprehensible her methods were. He stretched his long frame out and leaned back, crossing his ankles and setting the plate high on his chest so he could munch without fear of losing crumbs anywhere. It was during a bite of the turnover that his eyes naturally went up.

Icy blue eyes met those silvery ones. They were soft, yet a bit ... different.

He was stuck there with the turnover partly in his mouth. He blinked a couple of times, managed to take his bite and then give a polite nod to the woman on the second floor.

She gave the nod back with a smile, closing her eyes to give him a break. She was not exercising any disciplines at this point. She needed to feed soon and was about conserving her energy.

He chewed the bite, watching the woman for a few moments before turning his attention to his tea. For those few moments, he'd forgotten a lot about the glen. Her eyes were incredible. He gave that a little consideration while he took a drink of his tea and then another bite of turnover.

It was a fight against her nature not to become a vapid airhead at the sight of such a face. A fight she was winning knowing how badly Natasha hurt him in the past.

While munching another bite, he glanced back up to the second level. It was meant to be a casual thing, a basic glance right? Maybe he was hoping for another look into those eyes. She met his gaze again. The smile was warm and friendly. She resisted the urge for any number of cheesy pick-up lines.

Chewing and smiling, now there was a feat. He managed it though and offered another nod with a bit of a salute with his twice-munched turnover.

A dainty gloved hand rose as if stifling a chuckle. If she didn't know what she did, she would have been down there in a heartbeat. Patience Syn, wait until he knows the truth, and then see his reaction. That was a very sobering thought. He would probably hate you for what you are.

He must have something on his face. He glanced away and brushed at his chin and cheeks and then his nose to make sure no crumbs or jelly were present. Satisfied there, he took a sip and didn't immediately look back up. Staring was rude no matter how deep the eyes were or how much they drew him. He finished off the turnover and again with the checking for crumbs and stuff. Finally a look up again.

She smiled at him. The gods would have to be so cruel. To know he was here and would probably hate her thanks to the wicked b***h of the west.

He had a vague sense of familiarity, like he'd met her before but he couldn't remember her name or where they might have met. And saying something like that was just too much like a cheesy come-on line that he refused to mention it even if it was true. Pretty smile to go with those eyes too. She patted the seat next to her in invitation.

Chas' brow quirked quick and then a smile appeared at the invitation. A glance around to make sure it was for him and then he scooped up the other turnover and his tea, making for the stairs with a casual gait.

If Syn was alive, her heart would be hammering in her chest. She remembered them as children.

He smiled a bit wider when he approached, bowing his head forward a little. He hated this part and suddenly wished he were back in his workroom with herbs and the recipe in front of him. But he wasn't. He was here. The uncertainty fled when he let his gaze settle on her eyes. It was the most natural thing in the world to indicate the chair she'd patted and then take it, carefully managing not to upset his turnover or tea. Once seated, he managed a respectable, "Hello."

She inclined her head gracefully, "Evening."

Belately he realized he only had a single turnover left. He offered the plate toward her. "Hungry?"

She waved it off, "Thank you but no."

He chose not to eat if the lady wasn't and set the plate to the side on a little table usually reserved for books. He glanced back, the struggle not to get lost in her eyes was brief. He had to say something. "I'm Chas."

She smiled again, her voice was soft, "It is a pleasure Chas, I am Syndel."

"Syndel? That's pretty." Then he felt like an idiot for stating the obvious. He cleared his throat and leaned back a little to get comfortable. What to say that didn't sound like a come-on line? There wasn't much. The 'you look familiar' would definitely be bad. The 'do you come here' was just right out. And really, that's about all the material he honestly had. Pathetic! He swallowed and offered another quick smile. "So um ... Syndel. It's a pleasure to meet you."

The awkwardness was sweet to her. "(vq) So you come here often?"

"Not too often." Amazing how quick he could answer that. It somehow sounded pleasant and conversational coming from her. "Once a week or every other week or so." Turn about right? "You?"

"Very often, one of my favorite havens in this city." She gestured to the books, "I love to read."

"There's plenty to enjoy here, yeah. One or two." He smiled and took a sip of tea before making a further fool of himself. This gave him a moment to think. Once accomplished he gave a nod. "I come here to do research sometimes."

"Research? For?" She asked. She seemed quite interested.

His face took on a faint crimson shade. "Recipes, actually."

"What type of recipes?" Her voice was low and soothing now. She in all honesty knew but wanted to her the words herself. She wanted to hear the sound of his voice.

He rubbed a hand on his leg, a nervous gesture he'd not shook from childhood. "Absinthe. I like to know what other people have tried in other places. It's interesting."

"Absinthe, eh? I've been known to enjoy a glass of two."

His smile grew, interest sparked in his eyes. "Really? It's an acquired taste for most."

"I seemed to have acquired it in my travels." She said softly, that much was true.

"There are so many recipes, subtle differences that make such a huge impact on the final product. Where have you traveled? I'm curious about which labels you've enjoyed." It was hard not to continue babbling like an idiot but he managed it.

"I've been over much of the world, perhaps we can speak of the differences another time."

He managed not to look too crestfallen. "Oh. You need to go?" He gave a little smile.

"Not at all but I do not wish to monopolize your time either."

"I don't really have a long line of people needing my time at the moment." He gave another smile.

She arched a brow, "(vq) That is certainly a surprise. I would think you would have to beat your admirers off with a stick."

He chuckled a little, looking away for a few moments. "You are kind. Thank you. But I'm not a big Absinthe star or anything. Few people know who I am." Chas looked back. "The label's not that well know, you see. One day maybe."

"Given your determination, I can see that happening."

"You think so?" He shrugged. "I didn't mean to sound overbearing about it."

She chuckled softly, "You are devoted to your work, that is not something to apologize for."

"I've been told I need to get out more and uh, I think the words were 'give it a rest'." He offered a little grin. He hadn't realized he'd mentioned he made absinthe himself. Van and Mihaela were probably right. He was too absorbed in it.

"All work and no play..." She grinned, "You get the hint. It certainly explains why the females don't inundate someone as handsome as you. I am given to understand they are quite predatory here."

Syndel

"Something like that. Maybe I need to find somewhere that is all relax and no absinthe. But I like to relax with Absinthe, so then what?" Chas lifted his hands in surrender then chuckled and continued. "You flatter me, thank you. Now I don't feel quite so bad in mentioning how pretty I thought your eyes. Up close, I find I was mistaken. They're actually quite breathtaking."

"And now you flatter me." Syndel smiled back at him, "It's good that you like to relax with the absinthe. Do you relax alone?"

He nodded. "Usually. Mostly. Almost always."

It was all she could do to keep herself under control. It wouldn't do to scare him off and she certainly did not see him as

"Not really. Its ... serene. A little light, a candle usually. A glass sculpted just right and a spoon made just so ... a bit of absinthe and fresh water and just the right amount of sugar...the night sounds outside. It's perfect."

"It would sound romantic were it not solitary." She offered gently. The way he spoke, it touched her - an artist.

He hadn't really thought of it as romantic. "I guess it could be. I uh... hm. Yeah." He drew in a breath. "Romantic though would be two glasses and two spoons." This time when he smiled, dimples almost appeared.

She tilted her head to regard him a moment, "Indeed. Someone to share with.

A moment of bold infused him. "Would you care to?"

Oh now that surprised her. "I would enjoy that greatly, Chas." The gods were too cruel and she wanted to weep on the inside.

"I'm afraid we might have to share a glass. I only have one with me."

She smiled gently, and produced her own glass from the bag at her side. He chuckled outright. "I think I'm in love." His tone sounded a bit like he was joking.

She grinned at him, "I did say I'm know to enjoy a glass or two."

He nodded. "But not here. Let's go somewhere quieter. Somewhere the cinnamon and parchment doesn't overpower the delicacies of the absinthe. Do you mind?"

"Not at all, lead on."

He stood, offering a hand to her. "I left my bag down the street at the leatherworkers. He promised to fix a hole yet this evening. We will need to stop there to pick up the bag." He paused and then whispered. "The bag has my absinthe inside."

She placed her gloved hand in his. The glove hides the chill of her skin for now. She wanted to enjoy this little bit before the truth ruined things.

He couldn't shake the familiar feeling he got when he saw her in a certain profile. He chose to keep quiet though. "I use it for trading, you see. So I always have a few bottles on hand."

"Ahhh, I see."

He moved to the stairs and offered to let her go first. She moved past him gracefully. She ascends the stairs as if she owned the place. He shook his head, drew in a breath and wondered what he was doing. He followed her down and then managed to get around her to open the cheerful door, allowing her to exit first.

She brushed by him with a soft smile. Oh ye cruel fates...

And out after her. "This way." He offered his arm in a polite gesture for her should she choose to take it. She placed her hand on his arm, and off he led.

Chas led her to the leatherworker so he could retrieve his bag, the contents carefully replaced once the repairs had been made. Chas gave the woman a glance and found himself smiling. Her eyes were amazing. "I know this little nook place ... got a few tables and a nice view. We could enjoy a nip there."

Syndel smiled gently almost glad for the neutral location. If things went wrong, she could flee if need be. "(vq) That sounds grand."

His smile widened and he extended his arm again to see if she wanted to take it. Chas liked the way her fingers had felt before, resting lightly on his arm. "It's not too far. Just around the fountain and down one of the little walk ways. You can see the fountain even."

She placed her hand on his arm, enjoying this company, trying to push her misgivings out of her mind.

He led her to the fountain and then off down one of the little side street walk ways. The nook was nothing more than a little niche between two other buildings where a table and a couple of chairs were set up. He offered to hold one for her so she could get situated. She settled into the offered chair and smiled up at him.

He touched her shoulder and then moved to take his seat. It was not more than a few moments before he had withdrawn a bottle of Absinthe from his bag. It looked silver but it wasn't really. Next out came his glass and spoon .. and a little box that, when opened, held sugar cubes.

She withdrew her glass as well and set it on the table and watched him at work. She had wanted to see more ever since Zach had gifted her with a bottle of the spirits.

He smiled as he set the spoon across the lip of the glass, balancing it there. A single cube of sugar was set on the slotted spoon. "When was the last time you've had any?"

She grinned at him, "A couple of days ago." She admitted.

Syndel

Date: 2008-07-07 18:26 EST
"So recent?" Chas smiled. "Not a bad thing, though." He pushed the sugar cubes her way so Syndel could get one or two as her taste required. The measure of absinthe was poured in so it did not touch the sugar. He lifted a finger and then fetched his water bottle from the bag. "Here we are."

She plucked 2 cubes from the sugar for the spoon. She was enjoying him move.

He smiled and opened the bottle of water, extending it to her so she could pour out her own measure of water. He loved watching the sugar dissolve as the water was allowed to pour over it. If she indicated he could pour it, he would. Otherwise, he'd let her have the honor.

She took the water and poured a measure over the sugar. She has definitely done this in the past.

He watched her form and grinned wider. She had a steady hand and he liked the way she lifted her wrist to keep the water from dripping. "You're an expert."

She smiled at him, "I enjoy a glass now and again."

"It would seem so." He held his hand out for the water so he could add it to his own. "Nothing at all wrong with that."

She passed the water back to him. "A friend introduced me to a new label while here."

"Oh?" He smiled again with a nod. "There are a number of good labels here. Some stand out more than others." He added the water, watching the sugar cube dissolve as the water tickled over it. Once gone, he used the spoon to gently mix the drink, creating a swirling cloud inside the green liquid.

She was mixing her own as she listened to him. "I can well imagine."

Once he shook the spoon and set it aside, he lifted his glass toward her. "To ... a good drink with a new friend."

She lift her glass towards him, "Salut."

He gently touched their glasses together and then took a sip, watching her with rapt attention to see what her reaction would be. He loved watching people even if they didn't like his recipe.

She took the first sip and smiled, "I must say my friend has very good taste." She looked at him, "I was enjoying this label the other night."

His brows climbed. "Mine?" His grin was something a child would wear at Christmas. "You like it?"

She smiled still smiling, "Very much so. My compliments to you."

He smiled a bit wider. "Thank you. It's nice to hear someone enjoys it."

She smiled at him, "I've had some excellent vintages, and this ranks with the best of them." She was honest with her praise; it was one of the better vintages.

Again with the growing smile. "I really appreciate your opinion. I tend to be a bit narrow with my view and, admittedly biased."

She took another drink, savoring the flavor. He finally took a drink of his, still watching her. She had a look of pleasure on her face. He chuckled and lowered his eyes so he wasn't staring. The night was perfect and he was sincerely enjoying himself.

She was watching him through lowered lashes. She was feeling her fire return and hoped the past would not ruin things.

"So, you like the Teas 'n' Tomes. I can't say I've ever seen you before although, honestly, you look familiar. Please don't take that the wrong way."

She smiled, "Perhaps we have crossed paths in my travels." The was a softening of her voice, "I am from Sicily originally."

"Sicily?" He grinned wider. "No wonder you like Absinthe. They never stopped production." He chuckled and shook his head. "I've never been there but I've read about it."
"Beautiful country. Perhaps you will be able to see it soon?" She was enjoying her glass.

His smile faded a little. "I doubt it. I don't travel much anymore. I have ... family to take care of."

Her own faded a little, "Surely you could take some time to yourself?"

He almost chuckled, eyes lowered to his glass. "That does seem to be the common chant I hear of late." He watched his drink a moment then looked up again. "It's my sister. I ... she's all I have so I uh ... I don't want to be far away and not be able to take care of her."

She smiled gentle, "That is very admirable, Chas. It is rare these days to see someone care about.

His smile grew. "I love her, what can I say?"

Her eyes lowered though she was very glad to hear that, "Very admirable. She is fortunate to have a brother like you."

"Do you have family?"

The smiled faded then, "(vq) My family has long passed from this world."

His smile also faded, replaced with a look of concern. Instinctively, he reached toward her a hand across the table to lie lightly on hers. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have asked."

She shook her head and looked up to him, "It is alright, you could not have known."

"Tragedy is a common bedfellow here, I think." His fingers tightened a little. "It's easier to bear with friends to help." His smile was a bit bittersweet. "So I've been told."

She looked from his hand to him with a warm smile,. "It does ease with time."

"That's another rumor I've heard." He seemed to realize what he was doing and withdrew his hand slowly.

That brief contact had been welcomed, but she reluctantly let him withdraw. She wondered if she should reveal what she was now before he got too involved. Kinder for him that way.

"So, a happy subject. Did you fully investigate the various labels in Sicily?" Chas inquired.

Syndel smiled at him, "A bit. I return from time to time to see if new label have emerged."

"I enjoy mixing up the recipe, trying different things. I have a few different versions of my own."

"An innovator, eh? It's refreshing to know there are people willing to take chances."

"Can't find perfection if you're unwilling to experiment."

"Too true." She smiled, "And with practice comes perfection."

"Another rumor." He grinned. "Perfection is actually a good deal chance, a bit of skill, and a whole lot of patience."

She chuckled, "Amen. I find that in my painting."

"You paint?" There was interest there in his tone. His body language changed too. More attentive. "What do you paint?"

"Portraits. Whatever moves me. Technically perfect, but lacks a certain fire." She shook her head. "None have been good enough. So sterile."

"I find we are our own hardest critics."

She smiled at him, "Indeed. I have not been satisfied with what I have done thus far."

"I bet others think otherwise."

"Those who do not know better."

"Oohhhh." He shook his head. "I'd probably fall into that category."

She smiled, "I don't think so."

"Care to test that?" He took another casual sip of his absinthe.

"Per haps, When I have something to hand available to show."

"Don't have a studio here yet?"

She shook her head, "Not yet. I am looking for a place, but nothing suitable has presented itself."

"There are a lot of buildings not being used. I'm sure you can find something appropriate that inspires your muse." He took another sip, eyes down for a moment before lifting to rest on her again.

"Indeed, I am looking for something so that I can entertain as well as I have friends that do like to visit." She was looking thoughtful.

"I doubt you'll want something right in town here. It tends to have a reputation for being ... loud. I wager you would find more use in something set outside of town a bit yet still within walking distance. A two story, perhaps with an upstairs loft that has skylights to let in the view."

She considered his suggestions, "Indeed. Outside of town you say?"

"Just a bit outside of the town proper. Something that may enjoy the tangy scent of the ocean breeze if the wind is going the right direction."

She was smiling at him, "That is a most excellent idea. Thank you."
He inclined his head a bit, eyes not leaving her. "You are quite welcome. You'll want it large enough, of course, to have plenty of bedrooms and a nice sized living room to afford you a bit of space for entertaining. Perhaps a porch that wraps around the main floor of the house, covered and even screened in to avoid the buzzing bugs of the early evening."

"Like one of the Piazzo's from home, eh?" She offered softly.

"Something comfortable that reeks of relaxation and sings the gentle sigh of the muse." He offered a little grin. "Seems something like that would suit you."

She was watching him as he described it, "A dream of yours or a sight you see?"
"A picture I saw once. There are homes similar on the shore to the east." The words came quickly and unbidden by thought. "You're very beautiful."

She regarded him , "Thank you. That is a high compliment." She was smiling.

He seemed relieved that she wasn't scoffing at his compliment. He knew it sounded bad but he couldn't stop the words, they just kept coming. "I especially enjoy your eyes."

Oh if she could blush she would. "Thank you." She regarded him, "Sometime it is best to hear the compliment spoke plainly."

"I only have plain. I'm not a very fancy man."

"And that is most refreshing."

He smiled wider. "Good. I'm glad you ... like it."

Her voice lower softly, "(vq) I do."

"You probably hear that alot though. Don't you?"

"I do, but rarely with sincerity."

"Surely you have someone special who whispers reassurances of your beauty to you in moments of intimacy."

She shook her head, "Only casual lovers... I have not found anyone so special."

"Not ever?" He was treading in dangerous waters and wasn't sure how he'd gotten here. But the question was out and he chose not to retract it.

"No, Anytime I had thought thus, it turned out to be mere infatuation."

"Hmm. Here's to finding your special then. I heard another rumor that everyone deserves that." He lifted his glass again in mock toast.

She swirled her glass before taking her drink, "It is a hope of mine. "

"Have I taken us to less than happy topics again?"

She smiled at him sadly, "There is a reason it is only a hope and a futile one at that."

"Why, if I may be so bold?" He offered a smile in the hopes of lifting her spirits. "You're lovely, you are easy to talk with, and you have excellent
taste in drinks."

Revelations:

Something withered inside of Syndel, if she did not say something now, it maybe be too late. "(vq) Deserve the truth about what I am." She could not meet his gaze, "(vq) I am kindred."

He felt a pit in his stomach clench. Kindred. He knew what that was. He had a bit of experience. But he couldn't find it in him to leave. His jaw tightened briefly then eased. "You don't fit the profile. All I've seen are ostentatious braggarts, bent on furthering their own agendas." His voice lowered as he added, "The rest of the world be damned."

"(vq) The pretentious braggarts typically end up dead before their first century is up or on the wrong side of a Justicar." She said softly, "I am one that tends to introduce those braggarts to final death."

He offered a little smile. "Everyone has a secret here it seems. Even me."

She looked up to him, "More than one, Chas." She took a deep breath, "There is a kindred out there that my coterie is currently hunting."

"I hope you find him." He lifted his glass for a drink, sipping the liquid within.

"Her." She looked him dead on, "The one that killed your parents." Another secret revealed, but he had to be warned.

It was as though someone had taken his lungs and squeezed. He couldn't breathe for a moment. "And my brother?" He somehow choked out the question. That was why she was familiar. He had seen her before ... at the house ... with ... with Vanessa.

She shook her head, "She did far worse to him. She embraced him."

The once peaceful night was turning into a sort of living nightmare. He blinked and tried to focus on her words but something inside was growling. "She ..." He couldn't say it.

She felt horrid for doing this and it showed as she nodded. "She's still out there. She wants the three of you no matter the cost."

He shook his head, unable though to look away from her. "Why?"

"As near as we've been able to discover, your father angered her clan, particularly the vintners. She was their tool. Expendable." She shook her head, "I don't know why she wanted your sister, but she was attracted to you and your brother."

He stared openly, mouth open just a little. "It's all over ... the absinthe? Everything?"

"All over petty politics. The Absinthe was an excuse."

"Who are you?"

"I am an archon in the service of Justicar Whisper. All that I told you about myself was true. I was also the guardian in the woods that day when your sister wandered off."

His voice caught in his throat briefly before he managed a hoarse whisper. "I thought I'd met you before."

There was a degree of self-loathing in her voice, "(vqw) I was there that night and I failed to stop her. The Ventrue are masters at planning. They knew who to hit first, leaving your family vulnerable."

He blinked at her again, staring in disbelief. "You were?"

She looked up to him sadly, "Yes."

"I ... don't know what to say," so much information to take in. He finally managed to lower his eyes to his glass. He hadn't spoken of that night, hadn't thought of it in so long and now ... here was someone who knew. He felt blindsided.

"What of my brother?"

"Once I was able to recover from that night I was able to find him and get him away from his sire. He is in these lands."

"She wasn't ... imagining." His words were so soft, more breathed than anything.

She shook her head, "He is scared. He wants to see you both again, but he is afraid you would turn him away... or worse, that she will find you through him."

"I would never turn him away for any reason."

"He needs to know that, but he also needs to know you are both safe." She looked at him then. "He's willing to run to draw her away again."

"He can't run. It would kill Vannie."

"He is just a fledgling in our world, young and his sire ... She is a sadist."

"Where is he?"

"We have a haven not far from here."

"He is safe?"

She nodded, "Yes, there are two others besides myself watching over him."

"Good." He nodded. He wasn't sure what he should be feeling. He was more overwhelmed than anything else at the moment. Chas lifted his eyes to her again, focusing hard. "I'm trusting you."

She nodded as she regarded him, "Your lady friend... She knows."

A look of confusion flickered over his features. "Shariane?"

She shook her head, "I do not know that name. The black haired one, Mihaela."

Syndel

Date: 2008-07-07 18:36 EST
His expression cleared, confusion bleeding away leaving nothing in its place. Mihaela knew. And she hadn't said anything? A rumble inside grumbled an objection ... why? Why had she ... his lips tightened a little, jaw also clenching a fraction.

She read his face, "Because Zach wanted it that way... as much as she was against the idea. I know how she feels. To have the lives of others in your hands and wants to protect them with all you are." She looked away and stood looking away. "I had to tell you... I would not have been right for me to lie to you."

"Zach." His throat closed around the name, breathing turning labored for a moment. He finally shook his head. "Thank you for your honesty."

She looked over her shoulder and nodded, cold comfort really. "(vq) I am sorry for everything that has happened."

"Please don't leave."

She turned to look at him, "If that is what you want, Chas." She settled back into the seat.

"Thank you." He watched her for a long moment then drained his glass. There were so many things running through his head. On some level he did want to get angry but the logic of the situation did not allow it. Perhaps his mellow was absinthe induced. Regardless, he found himself watching her. After a few minutes he murmured, "You're still beautiful."

She smiled almost demurely now, after all was said and done, that was the sweetest of compliments, "(vq) Thank you."

"Now I know I'm not crazy too. I did recognize you on some level."

"You did and you were never crazy."

"So what happens now?" He was curious what she knew of him, of Mihaela ... of the pard.

"That depends on you. I've spent the last several years recovering and tracking Zach down. I spent part of that time in torpor."

"I don't know ... know what that is."

"It is the kindred version of a coma."

"Why?"

"Because of that night." Her fists clenched, "I was ambushed and was left to greet the sun."

"Because of us?" His own anger subsided a little, breath caught inward. "I'm sorry."

"It's not your fault. There is only one being I hold responsible."

"Do I hear a vendetta?"

She nodded, "In part. It's been ordered now."

"Don't get yourself hurt."

She nodded, "I heal fast and I have backup this time."

He couldn't help but smile a little. "I would rather such things not be necessary."

The smile almost reached her eyes, "I'm the monster that keeps the other monsters in line."

"You're not so special in that. Nearly everyone has a monster lurking under the skin. Even me."

She gave him a long look, "You are Lycan, like your Mihaela?"

"Of a nature."

She nodded, "I am so sorry, I wasn't able to do more for you and Vanessa."

"What happened to us ... that fault lies with me and me alone."

She reached over with a gloved hand, the tips of her fingers touching his cheek. "You were barely more than a child trying to care for a child."

His eyes closed at the touch, head bowing forward slightly. After but a few heartbeats, his head tipped into her gloved hand. "It doesn't matter."

"What matters is the here and now." She cupped his cheek gently. That he didn't shrink from her touch was amazing.

"Yeah, here and now. Going forward and trying to make due, right?" His own hand lifted, catching her gloved hand between his cheek and palm. "It's hard to have no regrets but carrying them is wearying."

She looked into his eyes, "Exhausting." She smiled at his touch. "There is much in my existence I would change... then I realize it is moments like that that take away to bad, if only for a little while."

"Did you talk to me because of Zach or .. because of me?"

She murmured softly, "(vq) Because of you."

Even if it wasn't completely true, he found himself smiling because she said it. She smiled gently. It was a battle with her own nature but for once she wanted to move at her own pace. She wanted to see if it was real this time.

"Flatterer."

She laughed softly, "Did it work?"

He chuckled a little. "Yeah."

Her thumb moved along his cheek bone, the soft leather caressing his skin. She ignored the beast clamoring to feed. Not here, not now, never him.

"Now what?"

"I don't know. One day at a time?"

"Best thing to do, yeah."

There was still that little bit of doubt, "(vq) I can go away if you wish."

Syndel

"Why would I wish that?"

"Because of what I am."

"I'm not racist."

She chuckled softly. "I still feel despite my age. I don't know why I am so *blessed. *"

"I wasn't going to ask you your age."

She shook her head, "Best if you don't know."

"Probably." He almost chuckled and then sobered a little. "When can I see Zach?"

"When do you want to?"

"As soon as I can."

"Tonight too soon?" She offered softly.

"No." His answer was quick. He wanted to see his brother before Vanessa so he could prepare her for it.

She nodded and stood, drawing her hand back gently. She pulled a phone from her pocket and flipped it open. Waiting until it connected, she began speaking softly in another language. She listened and nodded before hanging up. "It's arranged."

He watched her stand, anxious. To occupy himself while she spoke, he put the accouterments of the Absinthe back where it all belonged in his bag. When she rang off, he was watching her once more. At her words, he smiled. "Now?"

She smiled again, "Yes." She finished off her own glass. "You will have to thank your brother for he gifted me the bottle of Absinthe." She looked over to him.

He was stunned into silence for a moment before he was able to reply. "Zach ... gave you my ... how'd he ... know?"

She shook his head, "I do not know. He will have to answer that one." She started moving off in the direction of their haven. "We are trusting you with this."

He quickly followed after. "Trusting me? He's my brother."

"I know you will not reveal our location, the others not so much. And we are vulnerable in the daytime hours."

He considered that for a long moment then murmured, "Not anymore."

She smiled softly at that, "(vq) Thank you."

He gave a smile, glancing at her. "You're welcome."

She lead them through the streets to the edge of the docks district. The warehouse was looking the worse for wear as she gave a knock on the side door.

He waited, glancing around trying to make note of exactly where they were. He couldn't believe he was about to see his brother. He'd honestly thought Zach was dead. Was this one of those dream things? He didn't think so. He hoped not.

There was a muttering on the other side of the door. She shook her head, "Scorpion is rather unique. He was one of the Lasombra."

He shook his head, unsure of what that meant.

There wasn't time to explain as the door opened up and the big blonde framed the doorway. "Allegra, ? voc? certo isto ? s?bio?"1

Chas just stared. He was a big man to begin with and he knew it. Broad as well as tall. His silver-gray eyes took in the blond man, a sweep of gaze up and down.

She was dwarfed by both men, though she had to smile at the blonde in the doorway. "I am sure, Trystan. This is Zach's Brother."

He lowered his chin a little, head tipping to the side. He hadn't understood a word of what the blond had said but could figure it out by how Syndel replied to it.

"Chas this is Trystan de Coelho. We call him the Scorpion in the field." Her eyes dance merrily, "He is originally from the Azores, and tends to slip into his native Portuguese when he is not thinking," She could tease him and get away with it.

He gave a nod, not sure if he should extend his hand or not. "Scorpion, huh?" He couldn't help but try to peer past the big guy, wanting to see his brother. The need was growing more and more fierce.

Trystan grinned a bit and stepped aside. He murmured lowly to Syn as she passed by, "(vq) Eu poderia sempre tan essa parte traseira encantadora de seu..."2

He waited to let Syndel enter first, he would follow. Even in this time of great need, he was able to curb himself and control the urge to burst in.

She smiled over her shoulder. "You and what army, amante?" She looked over to Chas and called out softly, "Zach?"

1 - "Are you sure this is wise?"
2 - "I could always tan that beautiful backside of yours."

Chas waited almost holding his breath. He heard the movement perhaps before others, his head turning as eyes riveted onto the shadow moving toward them. As he passed into light, Zach paused - staring. He was face to face, or rather nearly so, with his brother and for a moment Zach looked like he wanted to bolt. Chas took a step forward, hand out. "Don't."

Zach's face, younger because of his embrace, shifted through so many emotions before he did finally move with preternatural speed. Right into Chas' open arms. Chas seemed like the big brother because of size and apparently physical age. His own calm was cracking though as he held his brother.

She stood back and out of the way watching the reunion. Trystan moved up behind her laying a hand on her shoulder.

Not a lot of words were exchanged between the brothers. The hug lasted quite some time before Chas finally broke down into the tears he'd been trying to avoid. Zach held his younger brother and tried to comfort him, his own face showing traces of red tear tracks. There was some laughter, a couple of choked sighs and then more hugging before Chas turned to seek out Syndel.

She was standing off to the side watching. Her arms were wrapped around herself as she prayed. Her eyes met his then. Chas smiled, his arm around his brother yet, as he drew his brother toward where Syndel stood. He didn't want to let go; neither did Zach too bad.

Zach grinned that boyish smile that took years off his already young features. "It's really Chas."

Chas chuckled and, for once was able to, ruffle Zach's hair. "Yeah, it is." Zach tried to avoid it but Chas was bigger.

Chas let go of Zach long enough to hold a hand out to Syndel. She gently placed her hand in his as she smiled at the interplay between the brothers. His fingers closed around her gloved hand, tugging a little to draw her forward. He probably shouldn't but he couldn't keep himself from trying to give her a hug of thanks. She was surprised and allowed herself to be drawn into his arms. It hurt to know he was only happy to have his brother back but she yielded to it anyway.

Chas circled his arms around her, drawing her in tight against his body. The intent had been for a little hug of thanks but once he had her there, he wasn't of a mind to let her go anytime soon. It felt nice to hold her, tucked in against him. He took a deep breath of her scent, committing it to memory.

She had wrapped her arms around him. It felt nice, really nice. Inwardly she felt like crying herself for the first time in centuries. He turned his head a little, breath warm on the cool skin of her neck. For a moment he actually forgot anyone else was there. He forgot Zach. The rush of her in his arms overpowered it all. His lips grazed her jaw line, arms tightening another fraction. She closed her eyes savoring the brief touches enjoying the moment until a certain Portugee1 had to clear his throat.

He blinked back to the present at that sound and let go, stepping back reluctantly but finding his brother right there ready to put his arm around Chas' shoulders. Chas watched her, lips parted a little breathing a bit heavier than perhaps necessary. She had her composure in an instant and smiled gently at him. That little bit of hope warred with what she knew. She did not move away but she did look between the brothers.

Zach guided Chas around and off to the side so they could talk. They had a lot to catch up on. Chas watched her until he had to crane his neck to do so and then let his attention drift to his brother.

She stood back and away. "Are you sure this is wise, amante?" It was amazing how close Italian and Portuguese were.

The boys started up almost where they'd left off, talking about Vanessa and happy things. There were moments of somber silence but they were together and they were enjoying each other. Chas was happy beyond belief. Zach was too, but he also felt a certain fear that this was all going to burst and someone was going to end up dead.

She watched the boys from where they stood, "Wise... for them to heal. Definitely. For me..." She shook her head. "I can't change what I am. I can only brace myself for the worse."

There was some good-natured banter and for a moment, Chas managed a look back in her direction. He gave her a smile, eyes flickering for a moment before moving back to his brother. In that moment, he was shy and uncertain and oh so confused. More so, that he'd ever been before. He tried to hide it by filling his senses with his brother.

She had met the gaze and smiled. "Mayhaps we can find a more pleasant location for the time when Zach meets his sister again." She tried not to think. She couldn't think of the possibilities. She could only focus on her job. Gods, it was the hardest thing she did.

He heard what she said, only because his hearing was more acute than the average human. Chas didn't react because he knew that she was not talking to him. What a roller-coaster this night had become. He and Zach continued to catch up, each grieving for the others pain.

Chas knew he was not going to be able to go home right away. Vanessa would scent Zach on him and that would be the worst thing that could happen. They would have to figure something out, have Mihaela perhaps bring Vanessa into town or something. It was hard not to overhear them talk. She made her way over to them with a look of concern on her face.

Chas glanced at Syndel at her approach, a faint smile on his face. "Hey."

She smiled at the welcome, "Hey. How's it going?"

Zach was still a bit wishy-washy but he was glad to see his brother. "It's going good." He smiled at Syn and then looked to his brother. Chas agreed with a nod, his eyes still on her. "You've given me my brother back. How can this be anything but great?"

She wanted to give them some measure of closure. "I can think of one thing missing." She smiled.

Both boys said it at the same time. "Vanessa."

She laughed softly, "You read my mind."

They chuckled, glancing between each other and then Syndel. Chas spoke. He seemed to be settling into the 'alpha' role between the two of them. "I know we can't bring Van here. We can't compromise your safety. Maybe somewhere in the city; the Teas maybe. Or the Glen? I'm sure Mihaela would bring her if we asked."

"Teas would be more comfortable." She looked thoughtful, of course she meant easier to guard. "When do you want to do this?"'

Chas looked sheepish, as did Zach. The answer would come as no great surprise. Chas spoke it. "Yet tonight?"

She chuckled softly, "You would have to clear it with your Mihaela. There is yet time."

"I can call her." Chas dug around in his jacket pocket and found his cell phone. It wouldn't be but a few button presses and he was waiting for Mihaela to answer.

1 - A derogatory term for one of portuguese descent. Common in Southeast NE.

Mihaela

Date: 2008-07-07 19:06 EST
Mihaela had been kicking herself over the argument when the call came in. It was a relief. "Chas, you alright?"

"Yeah." He sounded a little vague, but excited. "Mihaela, I need a favor. It's real important."

She heard that excitement and had to wonder, "If it is within my power, Chas. Name it."

"Will you please, please bring Vanessa to the Teas?"

She had a feeling and something about this had her smiling a little. It would save Damon and Akiko some grief. "Will do. Give me abour a 1/2"

"Thank you. Thank you so much. We'll ... I'll be waiting." Then he amended again. "We'll be waiting. Both of us."

"Chas...About earlier. Could you forgive me?"

He was quiet for a long moment, eyes flicking from Zach to Syndel and then over to Trystan before landing back on Syndel. "You ... there's nothing to forgive, Mihaela. You ... you're right."

She paused a little. "Let me get Van and we'll met you there."

"Thanks. I really appreciate it." After a moment he finally blurted, "She was right."

She murmured softly, "(vq) I know." She was moving through the house, stopping first at the kitchen where she heard Damon and Vanessa talking. "Van, sweets. Chas wants me to bring to you Teas in town. Says he has a surprise." Her eyes met Damon's with a smile.

Damon was not happy with the idea of surprises. Was the boy under duress? Was this some sort of trick? His eyes narrowed as he regarded Mihaela. Something was going on.

Vanessa turned to look at Mihaela, "Did he say what?" Mihaeal shook her head, "No, but if you get ready we can find out."

Damon crossed his arms and waited.
Vanessa whooped and headed for her room to get her shoes on. Miha shook her head. "I don't know whether to be pleased or worried. Chas is having her meet their brother."

"I'll go with you." His hackles were already up at the mention of the leech brother. Any reason, any flicker of a wrong move and he'd end him quite happily.

"That, my love, makes me feel much better." She smiled at him, "He's not alone in this and I don't want to go alone into an ambush. But it doesn't feel like one."

Damon prowled across the kitchen to circle his arms around Mihaela. He took a moment to give her a kiss before murmuring, "We'll make sure."

She returned the kiss with a soft purr just as Van scampered into the kitchen, "I'm ready!"

"That was quick."

She blushed, "but I wanna see what Chas has for me!"

Mihaela just laughed. "Why don't the three of use go and see."

Damon resisted the urge to make any comments about a happy family.

Then there was the hand that managed to find it's way into his back pocket. "Come on."

He grinned and headed out with them, arm draped around Mihaela's shoulders. Van scampered out ahead all giggly.

Meanwhile, the others made their way towards the Teas. She asked Trystan to stay behind. She knew how well that would work but she had to try. The boys didn't stop talking the whole time. They had a decade to catch up on. She just shook her head and listened to the banter as she kept watch. Chas talked and caught up on things with his brother, but he did at times fall into times where he was staring at Syndel.

She smiled at him each time he looked. She was moving with practiced ease, "We're here."

Chas held open the door for them, first Zach scurried in but Chas waited for Syndel.

She smiled and murmured, "(vq) Full circle..." as she headed on in.

He smiled as she went inside, eyes dropping for just a moment to enjoy the full view and then back up so he could enter and let the door swing shut behind him. She couldn't find fault in that, though she was mischievous enough to give a little wiggle as she walked. He had to suck in a breath and look upward toward the ceiling as he followed them in. Zach had already found a place for them to sit. He looked the younger brother and was acting much like the younger brother.

She nestled comfortably on the couch to Zach's right and pull her feet up. She was going for the "mostly harmless" look. Just then the door jingled again and the rest of the party entered in led by an overly excited Vanessa. Chas was standing at the end of the couch and when he heard the bell jingle, he glanced in that direction. "Van!"

She skidded to a halt at the sound of Chas' voice with a giggle. Mihaela was right behind her and scanning the shop for threats. She did recognize the boy and his companion from the inn.

Zach saw her and stared, if his heart beat, it would have been pounding in his chest. He slowly stood up, offered a little smile. Would she hate him? He swallowed and managed to greet her with a pretty solid, "Hey, Vanessa."

Chas put his hand on Zach's shoulder, watching Vannie. "You were right, Van." Chas nodded to accent his words. "You were right."

She stopped and stared as Chas' words sank in. "(vq) Zach?" She tilted her head at her eldest brother then threw herself into his arms with a soft sob. "Zach!"

He caught her, holding her tight against him as he buried his face in her hair. "Yeah ... it's me, Vannie." He was so relieved that she was not upset. Chas gave them both a hug, enjoying the moment - a moment he thought he'd never have. Both his siblings - alive. Well, mostly.

Mihaela leaned into Damon and murmured softly, "(vq) Two." She indicated to Syndel sitting on the couch. "No threat... yet."

Damon nodded, giving the woman a hard look before moving off to give himself a better vantage point.

Van snuggled into her brothers, happy to have them both back. Yet, something was off about Zach. She looked up at him searchingly.

He didn't want anything to mess up this moment. He rested his cheek on the top of her head and closed his eyes. She and Chas were so warm and ... alive. It hurt almost. Chas nuzzled into her ear. "It's okay, Van. It's really Zach."

She mewled softly and snuggled. "I knew you were here. You were hiding."

Zach couldn't say anything. He closed his eyes and reveled in the moment. He didn't want to think that maybe he couldn't stay here with them. "Just a game, yeah. I remembered you like that game."

Mihaela made her way to around the back of the couch that Syndel sat on. "Orchestrated this yourself?" She murmured softly.

Van looked up at him. "You're different now, but you haven't grown up any. You changed like me and Chas did." She said softly.

Syndel's blue eyes glanced from the red-headed Lycan to the woman to her left. "Not by intention." She looked over to the globe, "(vq) I couldn't hide it from Chas."

Damon just watched, his arms folded over his chest.

Chas spoke for Zach. "He's different but he's still Zach, Van. He's still our brother."

She poked Chas then, "I know that silly." She looked up at Zach and smiled. "Missed you."

Chas chuckled and looked away from his siblings to check on Syndel. He found Mihaela chatting with her and for a moment there was a flicker of concern.

Mihaela looked to Chas then and saw his concern. There was a smile and a slight shaking of her head. She was not upset.

Mihaela

Chas' eyes lingered on Syndel after the nod from Mihaela, then he finally turned his attention back to his siblings. There was a lot to catch up on, after all. Damon huffed a disgruntled sigh from the corner he'd taken.

Mihaela looked from Syn to Damon. "(vq) And the boy's sire?"

Syn turned her attention to Chas before he returned to his siblings. She then looked at the female. "(vq) Still hiding. Still a threat."

Damon watched Mihaela too, alternately giving the female the evil eye and the kids.

Chas had to admit it was nice having everyone back in one place, alive and just being there. He poked Van just to make her giggle.

Mihaela nodded and waved Damon over. She wanted him in the loop. "(vq) Syndel, this is my enforcer and my mate, Damon. We'll need to know what you can tell us."

Damon pushed off the wall and prowled toward the women. He nodded at the introduction, eyes narrowing on the woman again. He didn't like the scent of death.

Vanessa giggled at the poke and poked back knowing where to tickle her big brother.

Yeah, Chas laughed twisting a little and shoving her into Zach. Zach caught her and gave her a quick tickle up her sides.

Mihaela ran a soothing hand along Damon's arm. The kindred looked from them to the kids and back again. "(vq)The woman we are after is the same one that murdered their parents. She's pissed off some powerful people, yet she manages to survive."

Vanessa giggling and trying to tickle both, "No fair!"

Chas laughed outright, the first time in a long time perhaps. He dodged the next round but not before getting in another hand to dart fingers up her sides. Zach laughed too, the sound similar to his brother. He caught Van and gave her a hug, just holding her for a moment. It was overwhelming suddenly that they were there. She was giggling and snuggling with her brothers. She was so happy.

Zach murmured, "I don't want this to end, ever."

Damon huffed a growl. "She won't." He was ready to protect his mate's pard, his pard. They were his responsibility and he knew Mihaela would lay her life down for them. Akiko would surely be an able assassin should it come down to it. He only felt good leaving the isle knowing she was there. Although, he might never actually SAY that.

Mihaela looked at the kids as she listened, "(vq) I look at Zach and See Vanessa all over again." She knew Damon would understand that meaning. "(vq) They are all targets."

"So we deal with the one aiming." Damon was not one for a lot of words.

Vanessa looked up and over to the adults curiously. She tilted her head as she looked at Syndel.

Chas noticed where Van was looking, he bent down and whispered, "what is it?"

"I remember you. The lady in the woods." Vanessa said to Syn.

Chas smiled and petted Vanessa's head. Syn smiled and nodded. Van squeaked and responded, "Hey!"

Mihaela looked over to Syn then, "Lady in the woods?"

Chas offered the story. "Van went missing one day. We searched and searched. When we found her, she," he pointed to Syndel, "Was carrying her, bringing her home."

Mihaela nodded and looked over to the kids.

His brow lifted as Zach turned to look again at Syndel. He'd spent a lot of time with her but never realized that part. He didn't remember the lady as much although now that Chas mentioned it ... "Yeah. That was you?"

Syn nodded at Zach, "(vq) That was me."

His grin turned crooked. It was those moments that the brothers took on more individuality. Chas had a softer grin that was not really lopsided at all. And he was wearing it, eyes on Syndel to the exclusion of all else. She looked between the siblings. Vanessa liked knowing the nice lady was back, and the boys' grins were a welcome sign.

Even Mihaela could see, "(vq) You are not the typical cainite."

Zach took the three off to a couch to sit, grabbing Chas' shirt to get his attention to drag him along with them. He wanted to sit and enjoy his siblings. Vanessa giggled and helped Zach Drag Chas off. Oh she was gonna tease him. Chas blinked out of the daze and went with them to sit and talk. Vanessa nestled in between her brothers all cozy like.

Syndel turned into Mihaela's questioning look, "(vqw) I don't know... We met just this evening formally. In the past I was the mysterious lady that was said to be protecting the estate. Fat lot of good that did."

The boys enjoyed talking with each other and including their baby sister in their discussions. Memories and things they'd done when they were home often came up during their talk. Vanessa was busy chattering away and teasing her brothers as a little sister was wont to do.

Mihaela looked over to them then back to Syndel, "(vq) I don't want Chas being hurt." The warning was of a more personal nature.

For the first time Syndel got heated, "(vq) I really don't think you have that right. You are their nimir-ra, but you can't stop them from following their heart."

Mihaela

Damon growled a bit. He didn't like the exchange between the women. The leech got a hard look. Chas laughed at something his sister said, nailing their older brother on something he'd done over 10 years ago.

Mihaela had a serious look on her face as she looked ahead. "(vq) I doesn't mean I don't care about them either, Cainite." She sighed softly and looked over to them.

The red-head got an equally hard look. She then turned back to Mihaela. "(vqw) I don't want to see him hurt either. I had thought the truth about me would drive him away. It did not. I want to weep."

For a while he didn't look over, Chas was involved with his siblings. It was great to just be together. The in jokes, the pranks and the other things they'd enjoyed - it all came back.

Mihaela murmured softly, "(vqw) What happens when he passes before you. When age takes it's course?"

Damon's lip curled. His eyes moved from the women to the kids. "Enough. Too much time and ... the longer we linger, the more danger they're in."

She nodded to Damon in agreement, though she did have to answer that last question, "(vqw) Then it is time for me to greet the sun."

His eyes moved back and settled on the leech. He wanted to scoff but the woman spoke with a certainty. His lip curled and he shook his head as he walked toward the kids. "Time to go." Chas was the first to stand and object. "We just got here!"

Syndel shook her head, "No, he's right." She looked at Chas with a certainty. "You know where to find us."

Zach stood too, his own objection silenced by Syndel's words. He looked at his brother and sister, giving each one a fierce hug. Chas returned it but glared at Damon a moment longer than perhaps wise. Damon's lip curled again and a low growl escaped.

Vanessa placed a hand on Chas' arm, "Chas, Damon's only looking out for us."

Mihaela rose to her full height from having been leaning this whole time. "Daylight comes soon as well. It is for their safety too."

Chas gave Vanessa a hug, his eyes moving from her to Zach and then to Mihaela. "Yeah, that's why I'm staying."

Damon almost laughed. "No you're not."

Vanessa squeaked in protest and Mihaela looked at him measuringly.

"Daylight doesn't bother me."

"But Chas?" Vanessa wanted to argue. She looked at Zach then Syndel.

He gave Van another hug. "You come back tomorrow night, ok? We'll all hang out."

She hugged Chas and blinked up at him.

"Love you Vannie."

Vanessa wanted to cry. "Love you both."

From the way her jaw was set, Mihaela looked like she was trying to reign in her temper.

Zach kissed her hair and gave her a hug. "Love you too, Vannie. I'll see you tomorrow. Okay? Tomorrow night. We'll hang out like Chas said."

Damon growled and took a step toward Chas. Chas held his ground though, shifting his weight a little and narrowing a look on the more than capable red-head.

For the first time this evening the vampiress had lost whatever hold she had on her temper. She was in need of sustenance and it looked like she would not hunt this night. "Enough! I don't know about anyone else, but the macho routine ends here."

Chas glanced at Syn then at Mihaela, finally looking at Damon. Without a word, he turned and prowled out, letting the door clatter shut behind him.

"Vanessa, It's time to head home." Miha's voice was tight.

Damon gave a little wave of his hand to Vanessa, indicating she should go with him.

Zach didn't want to see her go but he wasn't going to complain. The way Syndel had risen her voice left him almost shaking where he stood. He didn't want to see her angry or earn any sort of ... discipline.

"My cat is determined to see you and yours safe during the daytime. I hope to the heaven it is not a decision he comes to regret." There was something almost imperious in her tone.

Vanessa gives Zach one more hug and murmurs softly, "(vq) She's not mad at you." She then scampers off to Damon. She trusted the red-head but she knew why Chas was determined.

Damon gave Mihaela a glance, hand lifting to rest on Vanessa's shoulder. "You ready, Miha?"

Zach had given his sister a hug but wasn't entirely convinced. He didn't like to see people upset.

Syndel nodded to Mihaela, "If I can talk him out of it, I will." Her anger was deflated now. Vanessa's words had done much to throw a bucket of ice water on the fire. "(vq) Until then you have my word I will do my best to see him safe."

Zach was glad to hear what Syn said and was even more glad that Syn didn't seem as upset.

Mihaela nodded and moved over to Damon. She had to wonder why she was being overly motherly of late.

Damon touched her waist when she approached and then murmured to Van. "Let's go."

Van looked up at Miha and Damon and nodded, heading out. She was a bit more sedated then arriving.

Syndel

Date: 2008-07-07 20:55 EST
Syn looked to Zach, "(vq) I'm sorry. Let's go catch up to Chas. I need to hunt and fast."

Zach nodded and moved to fall into step with Syn. He was more than happy to be near her because near her was safe. Tystan stepped out of the shadows near them. It never failed to make Zach jump when Trystan did that.

Trystan's accented voice cut through the silence, "That was a very dangerous gamble."

Zach kept quiet. He didn't know where Chas had gotten off to and he was a little worried about his brother. He glanced between Trystan and Syndel.

"It was worth it, if for nothing else, Zach knows his family again." She smiled at the younger kindred. Her eyes were scanning ahead for Chas though.

Zach smiled up at her, a little concerned still but smiling nonetheless.

They wouldn't find Chas until much closer to the haven and then only because he stepped out of an alley. A look of relief crossed Syn's face. His bag was still on his shoulder and he didn't look any the worse for wear. He was still looking a bit glowery though.

She looked down and away. She had to figure he was upset with her. In truth it was growing dangerous to be near her at this point. "Zach, Trys, why don't you go with Chas." She looking up and those eyes were sad.

He didn't like the idea of leaving Syn alone but he had a feeling she had a reason. He held his hand out to his younger brother in a beckoning manner. "Come on, Zee."

She looked over to Chas, "(vq) I will be back soon... I ... need to feed."

"Be safe."

Zach went to his brother and gave Trystan a glance. The man scared him on some level but he intrigued him too.

She leapt for the nearest roof, pulling herself out of sight. With the criminal element in this city, the menu was wide up for her. Chas looked up after her, felt for a moment like he should make sure she was okay but then decided to do the logical thing and go with the others.

In a rare moment for Trystan, "She doesn't want you to see her this way. " The big blonde was also watching her move out of sight.

"She'll be okay, though?"

"She is an old fighter." He smiled, "She will come home."

He gave a nod and followed silently, glad to be with his brother but still thinking about Syndel. Surprisingly, he wasn't thinking about Mihaela or Damon although he did think about Vannie. It would have been nice to have her with them but that was simply not possible.

Trystan went inside with the brothers. It would be about 2 hours and close to dawn when Syndel would return. Chas got a catnap in during that time. He'd been up most of the night and if he wanted to be alert during the day he had to have some rest. Zach sat near him while Chas napped. It was strange to see his 'younger' brother looking so much older and being SO much bigger.

She slipped inside the haven looked far better than before. She crouched near the boys and looked on.

Zach smiled up at her and gave a 'shh' motion then indicated that Chas was sleeping.

Chas however, murmured, "Everything okay?", without opening his eyes.

She smiled at them both, "(vq) Everything is fine. There is one less murderer haunting the WestEnd."

Zach grinned as Chas moved, rolling over a little so he could see Syndel. "Then that's a good thing." He blinked the sleep from his eyes in much the same manner a feline woke after a quick nap.

She stripped the gloves from her hands, revealing the edge of a red tattoo.

He pushed himself up, smiling at her. "And you're feeling better, right?"

She smiled back at him, "Much."

"Good." He didn't know what to say but he did notice the bit of red. "Artwork?" He nodded toward it.

She rolled her sleeve up a bit. "When I was younger and wilder, I found an oriental artist and my body was his canvas."

His brow lifted, scanning the tattoo. "Younger and wilder huh?"

She chuckled softly, "Indeed. It covers my arms, my back and down my legs."

His cheeks got a little red. "You weren't kidding."

Cool finger tips reached up to caress his cheek. He lifted his chin a little, tipping his cheek a bit into the touch. She cupped his cheek gently. Those eyes were so uncertain as they searched his face.

Syndel

He was the one with the deeper voice, his whisper was almost gravelly. "What's wrong?"

There was a slight, self-deprecating laugh, "(vq) I'm scared."

"What are you scared of?"

"(vq) Feeling. Being rejected and alone." It took a lot for her to voice it.

He frowned a little. "I ... just met you and I can't imagine ... ever ... rejecting you."

She moved just a little closer. "(vq) I've never felt this strongly before."

"Never?" He had to feel the cool touch of her skin under his fingers, he carefully drifted his fingers along her cheek. "Honestly ... Neither have I. I ... I've had friends and close friends and ... well ... the occasional cuddle buddy but ... I'm drawn to you."

She leaned into his touch as she eyes closed. "I have had my share of lovers. But nothing ... like this."

Zach is just totally, wow. He has to scurry away and go spend some quality time with Trystan to avoid the whispering between his brother and Syndel. Chas knew when Zach scurried off and once he was gone, he let his fingers slide further back into her hair, slipping into it and curling tighter around her head to draw her into him so he could kiss her.

She moved closer to him arching into him to taste his lips. He hadn't expected a lot of warmth but he was still amazed by the way it felt to have her lips pressed against his. The kiss was just ... breathtaking. He didn't want it to stop either. His fingers tightened as he shifted a little, moving into the kiss.

She murmured softly against his lips. She never dared to hope this was possible. Her hands gripped the front of his shirt. He grinned in the kiss, fingers massaging the back of her neck as he held her close. He'd enjoyed kissing girls before but this was different. It was more intense to him and he didn't want it to ever end. He didn't want to have to breathe.

She broke the kiss gently to gaze at him. She didn't have to breath, but she was very careful with him.

"You're very good at that." He was smiling a lazy grin that had so many levels of feline in it that it wasn't even funny.

She smiled tenderly at him and caressed his cheek, "(vq) Were it not so close to dawn, I would show just how good."

"You need to rest."

Without ceremony, she curled up next to him. He put his arm around her and held her close. He wondered what it would be like when the sun rose. Chas promised that he would keep them safe though, he would be their guardian.

She looked up at him and murmured softly, "(vq) It will seem as if I am not alive. Our bodies will be dormant... We lose consciousness..." She shook her head trying to prepare him for it. "(vq) It will not be an easy thing to see. It's like we die each time only to rise again."

He nodded, trying to process it. Trying to get ready for it. "I'll be here."

She nestled against him. "(vq) I know."

He took a few breaths to steady himself and then just fell silent to wait. He was quite feline - he had patience to a fault. She grew still in his arms. She did look as if she truly had died. She was at peace though. There was a serene look about her.

It did scare him when she went limp and grew so deathly still in his arms. His chest clenched and for a moment he wanted to shake her but the look on her face kept him from doing anything like that. He swallowed hard and carefully brushed some hair away from her face. He kissed her forehead and settled in for the long day ahead.
