Zacherye

Zacherye stepped from the mists, the rune that he'd obtained to bring him here faded to a mere pulse in his chest pocket. If his heart beat, it might be pounding wildly in his chest. As it was, he felt the cold fingers of fear clutching at his mind. What was he doing? Should he be here? He didn't think so but he really was out of options and the talk with Syndel had made him see that perhaps hiding from his past and his siblings might simply be the worst decision of his life. Or unlife as it were.

Unlife. It was a strange term really to describe his existence. Caught between two worlds, afraid of one but unable to return to the other. He lifted his eyes heavenward, the beast inside him quivered. The sun overhead was a strange thing too. If it were not for the talisman he'd borrowed from his sire, he would be a smoking, screaming pile of ash within moments. He swallowed the rush of anxiety that imagery caused and took a step forward.

He knew he was closer to his family than he'd ever really consciously been and now that he was so near, he wanted to cross the distance quickly. Only will kept him from running. He steadied himself with effort and started off in the most logical direction he could fathom. Perhaps by nightfall he would be with his siblings.

The guardians of this isle had other ideas. The wards had pulsed and sent the warning to the guardians. The alarm was given and one chose to answer. It was her territory and with the recent attacks on friends and allies, she was in no mood to play games.

On her way out, she stopped to find her mate and her best friend. They would get cranky if she went alone, more so if she left them out of the action. Truth be told, she wanted them at her side and trusted them to watch her back.

It was thus that the lone woman was waiting in Zacherye's path as he drew closer to her home and her family. To the visitor she was of average height, wearing jeans and a t-shirt that had seen better days. She was not out to impress.

She said not a word, yet something in her stance was ... powerful.

When he saw the figure, his steps slowed and then stopped all together. A nervous tic had him swallowing hard and taking an unnecessary breath inward before forcing his feet to move again. He'd already learned powerful lessons dealing with trust and things not appearing to be what they seemed. He continued onward, watching the woman warily. What was her purpose? She didn't speak, she didn't really even move. He could hear her heartbeat, hear the heartbeat of others nearby. If his own still beat, he would have felt a rapid staccato inside his chest. When his steps stilled again, he was about ten feet from the woman. His hands were loose at his sides, his own garments comfortable pants, shoes that might be considered expensive to some, and a simple white shirt that was loose enough for the wind to tease without being overly billowy. His blond hair was captured back at the nape of his neck, blue eyes on the woman.

The heat of the sun warmed his body, the sensation both soothing and frightening. So many distractions around, he willed himself to focus on the woman and did his best to keep his voice from wavering when he spoke. "Hello."

What would happen now, he wondered?

She nodded when he spoke. She took the minute to observe him, the way he moved, his scent. On the metaphysical level, she could tell what he was. The power from him at the hints of coldness a death, not unlike Talomar. However, unlike Talomar, he did not have a level that came with age.

She did have to wonder how one so young could stand the sunlight. That was something that could be determined later. His face and scent around her curiosity more. She could see the resemblance in him to Chas and Vanessa. Though he appeared younger than Chas, not older as she had been led to believe. Though his condition now explained much.

"Why are you here?" She was firm in her tone, though there was a hint of concern.

Zacherye?s hand rubbed lightly against his leg, gaze wholly on the woman. "I'm looking for someone." He knew better than to let out too much. Information was valuable and might keep him (or those he loved) from danger.

Mihaela crossed her arms regarding him intensely. "And they are?" She wanted confirmation of who he was looking for. She was dead set against them getting hurt.

His chin lowered slightly, fingers flexing out of nervousness. "What business is it of yours who I speak with?"

She arched a slender brow, "Well, you are trespassing on my territory. Given that this is an isle, you seek people under my protection." Her eyes were intense, was it the light that was making them feline.

"You own the whole island?" His blond brow arched slightly, teeth nipping at his lower lip.

"I have claimed it..." She hardly moved, the stare unwavering, "So I ask you again, who do you seek?"

"You claim the island but do you claim ownership of everyone here?"

Her eyes regard him carefully and she took a chance, "I am Nimir-Ra of the Blood Claw Pard. I do not own as much as I protect."

He blinked twice at those words. He had no idea what a Nimir-Ra was but in his current state he was willing to take it as something with power. He was unwilling to back down, though. He'd come this far. "Protect?" He tried to choose his words carefully. "Protect those willing to be protected, or those you have decided need protection?"

"Willing... I would die first before I let anyone harm them."

"Can you die?"

She nodded, "I can, but I guarantee I'll take people with me."

"I'm not asking for a demonstration."

She was still immobile. "I don't give them." One as only as good as their threat some days. "One more time, who are you seeking?"

"How can I trust you?"

"You can't, but then you are not going any further until I get an answer." She said with finality.

His eyes narrowed. "As you wish. I'll wait until they leave."

There was something stirring, "You are on my territory without permission. You are a threat to those I hold dear." sounds familiar eh?

His hand moved again over his thigh in that nervous gesture, eyes still locked on the woman. The hair on the back of his neck was rising. How could she possibly hold them more dear than he did? He almost said so but that would be too much information for her. He would need to find them when this woman was not around. "You make assumptions."

She smiled darkly then, "Considering that your kind likes to war with my kind?" Her eyes were definitely looking more feline. No trick of light there. "You asked if you can trust me, that's a two way street. You don't want to give up a little information, and I don't want to give up their safety. Not when we've already been assaulted."

His eyes widened a bit, youth betraying his surprise at her words. What did she know? "What are you?" He remained steadfast but his confusion had him distracted.

Mihaela

"Lycan is the common term." Mihaela regarded him. The youth was apparent, but she could not afford to back down. She had to know that this one would not harm her pard.

Another flicker of confusion chased across Zach?s features, so much like a younger Chas for that moment. "Lycan. As in ... werewolf?"

She could see the resemblance more and more, but she wanted to be careful, "Werepanther to be precise. A pard is a family of were-cats."

His baby face blanched, the color that gave him that human appearance draining from the shock of her words. Perhaps his reaction could be interpreted as fear, perhaps realization of what he was facing. In fact, his heart sank further in his chest. Why was Chas and Van living with ... were-cats?

She was reading him now. She knew very little of what happened those years ago, only what Damien and Aret was able to relay. Now there was a bit of compassion, "The family resemblance is there. I have to know what you intend if I bring you to them."

He almost took a step back when she started speaking. Family resemblance ... yeah. Understatement. Everyone would confuse them as twins even though he was the elder by a couple of years. "I ... need to see them." The void that filled his chest was growing with each passing day. His decision to remain hidden did seem wrong after his talk with Syndel. They might not accept him, but he had to try.

"Understand that they went through hell before I was able to help them."

Pain fled through his eyes briefly. More hurt? A frown started to mar his features. "What sort of help did you provide?"

Her right hand clenched into a fist, "I killed the creature that was hurting them." Something in the tone made it sound as if she was including herself in the 'them.'

The wind left his sails. "Hurting them?" He never wanted them hurt. That desire to keep them safe drove him to action before. "Why .. why them?"

"Greed... power." She said simply enough, "Your sister was the hostage to force Chas' cooperation." There was something in her eyes, "Torture does not begin to describe what they... we were put through before I put him down."

He winced as if physically struck, his head falling forward. Zach found his legs unable to hold him up any more and went to his knees with a thunk. He'd wanted to believe they were safe but they'd not been safe. Why had he given in? What had he given up ... and why? Zach found himself leaning forward, hands on the ground, a sticky red-wetness trailing down his cheeks.

She would probably hear about it later from her enforcers, but compassion was something she could give. In a heartbeat, she was kneeling before him and wrapped him in an embrace, not caring what he was. That he cried was enough for her. "(vq) They are safe now. I promise you that. They have a home without fear..."

The beast inside grumbled at the loss of control but he didn't care. He just wanted to see them and know for himself that they were okay. Her assurances were not enough although they were accepted. The sobs wracked his body for several minutes; the vitae flowing freely down his cheeks. He was a mess and losing blood but he couldn't stop. He would have to hunt soon as he couldn't hold as much as someone like Syn. Yet the idea of hunting was a distant thought. As the tears slowly subsided, he found this woman's eyes. His voice cracked when he spoke, "May I ... please ... see them?"

Sometimes the best course was the simplest. The adamant woman gave way to a compassionate one. "Yes." She looked at him a moment, "It would be best to clean yourself up first."

He slowly nodded his blond head, hand rubbing across his cheeks. He hated the idea of having to leave and clean up but it was appropriate to do so. "I'll ... I'll come back when I have."

"Do you want to meet some place neutral? Someplace everyone can be comfortable in?"

"Anywhere they're safe."

"And you don't have to leave to clean up."

"I do, though. I ... my clothes and ... I need to shower I think." He couldn't look up at her any longer, the shame of his waste was clear on his face.

"There is something else you are not telling me." This was said kindly though. Before he could say anything else, "I am sure you are familiar with the shop Teas 'n' Tomes. We can arrange the meeting there. A public location and I can be on hand for protection."

He didn't say much else at her first comment. He simply kept his face turned downward. A nod answered her question about the Teas. "I know of it."

She sighed softly, "(vq) I know that they miss you terribly. Vanessa swears she caught your scent in the shop." She looked at him, "Until it is proven otherwise, you are to be treated as family. Please do not make regret this decision."

Old arguments on why he'd not contacted them before reared suddenly. He shook his head and pushed away, scrambling back to stand up. "I can't. It's not safe. I ... I shouldn't have come here." Longing warred with protection, his depression over not seeing them losing to the fierceness of his desire to keep them safe. "She cou... might." He stumbled backward as he retreated. "Keep them safe. Don't trust anyone. Please ? tell them I love them."

She shook her head listening to his words and things that were not said, "If you need help, you can come to me."

"No. I can't." The tones of a soul dying all over again laced his words. "I don't want to cause any more pain."

"Think about what you are saying. The pain it will cause them to know you still exist.

?If she finds out about them ... she'll kill them ... Or worse."

"If she tries, she will be destroyed."

"That's been tried."

Something stirred within her, "Anyone can be an Alpha in our world. Few have the power to be Nimir-ra ... Leopard Queen." She was deadly serious, "I don't make promises I cannot keep."

?You said yourself that you can die."

"That does not make me weak." She stated plainly.

"I didn't say you were." He continued backward, stepping unsteadily in his retreat. "I am, though." Additional heartbreak dripped from those few words.

?You are young yet." She said softly.

"That's no excuse." He dug into his pocket for the rune he'd used to get here. He looked at it for a long time before he let it drop from his fingers. If it was here, she couldn't find out where they were as easily although he had few doubts that she would torture the information from him anyway. "There ... no trace, right?" He blinked through the new tears that threatened.

She shook her head, "We are protected by things she has no defense against, like magic. Please consider this before you go into hiding."

He wanted to believe it but again, trust was hard to give. "They're too precious to compromise." He longed for them even in spite of his words.

"There is safety in numbers." She was trying every argument she could come up with. She could tell by the way he was talking what this 'she' was. "And what if Chas decides to find you? Wouldn't be better if you were someplace you can be protected as well?"

"I'm not important. Only they are."

She signed softly, "Sorry, I don't think that way. You have family that cherishes you and you are going to hide in the hopes that someone doesn't find them."

"Hide ... yeah, that's the plan. Draw her attention away if she does show up. Try to divert her long enough for them to be left alone."

"So keep running and hope she doesn't catch you?"

Mihaela

Date: 2008-06-25 07:36 EST
It sounded foolish but it was the only plan he had. He nodded.

"And what happens if she catches you? Are you alone?" She gave him a bit of space; "I can't see you by yourself out there. Not with the Hunters on top of your problem."

"I've managed." He didn't want to give up any names, plausible deniability and all that.

The look she gave him was one of disbelief... The type that said 'yeah right, tell me another one.' "So you want me to tell them you exist, but that you can't see them? How cruel is that..."

He was getting so confused. He held up a hand. "No, you're right. Don't tell them. Just ... gah ... I don't know ... yeah, just watch out for them."

She shook his head, "Vanessa is already hurting. No matter how much you hide, she will be able to tell you were here. Same with Chas..." She was not happy, "And I will not lie to them."

Yep. Worst idea he'd ever let himself get convinced was a good idea. "If anyone here gets hurt, it's all my fault then. You'll have reason to hate me.?

"You really don't know the score. You are already hurting Vanessa with your hiding, damnit. She smelled you in the shop." She was definitely not pleased, "Chas wants to believe it was part of the events that are plaguing the city as of late."

"So you're willing to risk everything for them to be happy even for a short time?"

"Life is a risk. And yeah, their happiness is important to me. If that is what it takes to help them heal, then it is worth all the risks in the world."

"I'm .. scared." Two words that he'd been unable to murmur before now.

She nodded, "That I can understand. Question is, are you going to let the fear drive you for the rest of your days?"

?It's all I have."

"No, it is not, but you have to find that within yourself."

He chose not to argue. To do so he would have had to give reasons and accounting and he just wasn?t up for that.

"I will not tell them immediately. But you have to find a way to tell them yourself and soon."

He nodded slowly at her words. A swallow later he managed, "Thank you."

"A haven can be had here, but you need to conquer your fear." Her eyes bore into his.

That .. may take a while."

She nodded and turned on heel, "That is up to you. The fear is what is weakening you."

His answer caught in his throat, unable to speak it out. Some training was too ingrained. He slowly turned, moving away to seek a way home.

She seemingly melted into the treeline, fading from Zach's view. In truth, she remained there watching the young vampire, caution warred with compassion. Yet, caution was winning.

She waited for her mate and her friend to join her as she watched. The debate raged on but in the end she knew she could do no less.

"He's scared, but not alone. He's too young to not have some sort of help, even if it is not his sire." She said to seemingly to no one. But she knew they were close at hand.

Damon Kard

"Should have ended him." He didn't have much compassion for vampires, other facts did not matter. They were in danger. That's all he saw. He would not let anything happen to Miha or the pard and the vampire was certainly a threat no matter how young.

Akiko Kitamura

Akiko didn't have much compassion for vampires either. However, there was something about this one that bore some reconsideration. She could see it in his face. His sisters eyes, his brothers nose, their similar mouth and chin. "No Damon, there is something familiar about this one that bears consideration. If he is their sibling, ending him will tear the pard apart. We should keep an eye on him and use extreme caution." She replied softly.

Mihaela

Date: 2008-06-26 18:11 EST
She considered both opinions fully, standing there a long moment.

"Killing him would be a mercy." She didn't move as she spoke. "But at the same time it would tear the pard apart. She had seen something else in the young one's eyes.

"He reminds me of Vanessa and Aret. Scared of his own shadow, afraid he will be punished for the slightest thing."

"I want them to know their brother, but I want to do it in a neutral location." She regarded her Enforcers. They were the two dearest to her heart. "Away from the house and the others."

Akiko Kitamura

Date: 2008-06-26 18:53 EST
She nodded. "Where would you suggest?"

Damon Kard

Date: 2008-07-05 15:56 EST
"Somewhere bright and hot so we can see how long it takes for him to spontaneously burst into flames." His hands got shoved into his pockets, a glance spared for Akiko and then Mihaela. "I like fireworks."

Mihaela

Date: 2008-07-05 16:05 EST
She glanced to Damon, "As tempting as that sounds, we still have a treaty of sorts with Talomar..."

She left that hanging because the treaty really hasn't been much more than lip service, even though there has been no open incidents.

"Chas and Van do need to know what happened to their brother and given his agitation, I'd say there is more trouble on the horizon."

She turned to Akiko, "I think we should set up a meeting area on the isle. I'm not comfortable with this happening near the house. This also means if thinks go south, we can stake him and leave him to greet the sun."

The last was said for Damon's benefit. She was only allowing so much. The kids was just a kid, but he was also Kindred. She was not dismissing what he said, just saving it for the last resort.

Damon Kard

Date: 2008-07-06 10:21 EST
Damon grunted but said nothing else. Just what they needed, really - more trouble. He exhaled a sigh. Would they ever get to have some peace? He wanted nothing more than to take Mihaela into his arms and let her enjoy peace and quiet. He wanted her to enjoy life instead of always having to protect or mother others.

Mother. She would make a good mother. He felt his features softening at the thought and did not know he was actually nearly smiling. Little ones crawling on her while she lounged, attention given to her while she enjoyed a nice mug of coffee.

His eyes slid in her direction. Yeah, that's the kind of mother she should be. Not the sort who put herself on the line for people who didn't care as much in return.

Akiko Kitamura

Akiko nodded and then rolled her eyes and Damon. "What if the young ones won't allow us to "stake" them? What then?" I think we are playing with a potentially volitile situation as it is. Blood is always thicker between actual family members then the pseudo family environment we have cultivated. Between the three of us we can keep the siblings safe. Caution is warranted Miha between the needs of the many and the needs of the few or... one."

Mihaela

Date: 2008-07-07 09:48 EST
"The problem comes in protecting Chas and Vanessa should the past indeed be back to haunt them."

She looked between her two enforcers. "The city affords us the visibility to do this and forces the kindred into the cover of their Masquerade... If I am reading the young one right. He does not have the marks of one of their more rebellious neophytes."

She shook her head. It was not an easy chose and she has been off-balance of late. "The young ones are not to venture island without an Alpha, Shariane or a Blood present." She had to extend the declaration to include Aret's boyfriend and Viktor's Cherry. She also knew the the lady mage in the woods would be one that would give the kindred pause. It was well known that she and Cerise had been conferring on how best to ward the isle. Shariane has some ideas that incorporated using elemental watchers tied to the isle itself.

She looked to Damon and Akiko, "I know Aret and Viktor can call on more help outside of us. It is the others I worry about now."

She smiled at Akiko, "Let us hope the blood is indeed thicker for the boy, Aki."

Akiko Kitamura

Date: 2008-07-07 10:56 EST
Akiko bowed respectfuly. "As you wish...." She answered softly to the declaration that the siblings be escorted at all times.
