"No, no, no, NO! You're not concentrating."

"Oh cram it you overgrown lizard. I'm concentrating as hard as I can."

Kitty glared at Khar-Lohn, the dragon Tass entrusted to help with her magic lessons. They'd been at it for hours and she was tired. A tired Kitty meant a crabby Kitty.

She had left Rhydin months ago, choosing to spend time on the isles. She wanted to get to know what she could of her mate's home. She'd also had quite enough of Rhydin drama for the time being. She would undoubtedly return there when she felt that itch. But for now she was busy with trying to learn and control her new magical abilities. Unfortunately it wasn't going as smoothly as one would hope.

Khar-Lohn looked at her disapprovingly, then looked to the former target. Former meaning it was now a pile of ashes. She had been trying to change it's form.

"When I said change it's shape, moredhel, I did not mean change it into debris."

"I'm exhausted and you didn't specify what I had to change it into. So... there you go." She flung a clawed hand haphazardly at the destroyed target. Another explosion happened on top of the pile of ashes, causing her to wince.

"Dammit." She mumbled under her breath.

She wasn't sure why it was proving to be so difficult. Her sibling took to magic with such ease. It was an ability she never envied before now.

Khar-Lohn sighed in exasperation, bringing her out of her angry thoughts.

"I am convinced that it were not for the wards the Elder placed about this area, you would have destroyed this entire isle by now. What does he see in such a destructive and violent being as you?"

Kitty glowered at the gold dragon.

"Why don't you try asking him? And I seriously doubt I could single handedly destroy this entire place. That thing there is quite beyond me." She snapped as she pointed at the top of The Pearl.

"Indeed."

Kitty rubbed her temples as she tried to focus on her studies. Books were opened to pages and strewn all over the table she sat at.

It wasn't long before she tossed the book she was trying to read into the pile before her with a sigh and leaned back. This was frustrating. It wasn't that she lacked the power. It seemed to be more that she was dealing with too much power and didn't know how to keep it under control.

Khar-Lohn was right... partially. If it wasn't for the spells Tass had placed up around where she practiced, she more than likely would've not only blown herself up, but every structure within a three mile radius. However, he didn't seem too concerned. If anything, he seemed amused at how she made things explode instead of whatever she was actually intending. Perhaps his knowledge that he has placed proper safeguards which prevented any real damage occurring allowed him to be so laid back about it.

She scowled to herself and jammed her hands into her pockets as she glared at the books before her. Then her clawed fingertips found the pyramid shaped object that had been sitting in there for months.

She tugged out that item and looked at it. It was a glass pyramid created with the intention of holding souls. Something that came in rather handy when she was dealing with people whom were possessed. However, this one presently was holding a simple silver acorn.

It looked harmless enough. But anything left behind by Melantha was rarely harmless. The Dream Witch had a history of messing with people for her own amusement. Kitty doubted she would deliberately harm someone in the family. But... there were no certainties. It didn't take a psion to know that woman wasn't exactly entirely stable at times.

Then there was Aleron. The Ancient wouldn't touch it. He also claimed it belonged to Kitty, even though she hadn't physically touched it. Apparently even a telekinetic touch was enough.

She balanced the pyramid in her palm, the other hand sending it spinning in her hand like a child's toy. She debated what to do with it as she watched it twirl. The soft candle light nearby glinted off each facet of the pyramid as it spun, causing a rather mesmerizing sight until it slowed to a gradual stop.

Well, if it was already "hers", what damage could it do if she actually touched it? And if it did cause her harm, she had faith that it could be undone.

And so, she reached up and undid the lock that held the object closed. A clawed finger reached in for the acorn, hesitated for a split second, then finally touched the shiny silver bauble.

And suddenly it was gone! Her yellow serpent eyes widened in surprise as the acorn apparently was sucked into her skin. The violet glow flared around her eyes much as it did when she was practicing her magic, she felt a brief tingle, and then it was gone.

Well, she wasn't dead... right?

Since the acorn absorbed into her skin nothing had happened. At least... not while she was on the Isles.

Her trips to RhyDin were far and few between, but she occasionally made it there to check on House Helston, gather a few personal belongings, and sometimes get mail sent out to her kids who were safe and sound in Lavinor. Of course she usually managed to stop by the Inn briefly to let everyone know she was fine.

During one of these trips she was meandering down the street towards the Inn. It was a fairly quiet night, so she was letting her mind wander as she trekked the all too familiar path.

Khor-Lohn was still horribly frustrated with Kitty's lack of noticeable progress in her magic lessons. There wasn't much to be done about that right now except to just keep trying.

As her mind went over her attempts over and over, she felt her mind being led off to another path. She tried to snap herself out of it, but no... she was sucked in.

She was practicing much as she always did. Each attempt to transform a simple object resulted in the same catastrophic explosion. She could hear Khar-Lohn voicing his discontent.

"You're not trying, moredhel. You need to focus.

"I am trying, you blasted dragon!" As she thrust a finger out towards the targets haphazardly. Another explosion is heard.

"You must... oh dear gods." The dragon was staring at something in the target area.

She turned towards where he was staring and she could see a mangled body.

Oh no! What had she done?!

She ran towards the body, but her legs couldn't seem to move fast enough. It felt like she was trying to run through water. But the closer she got, the more recognizable the body was.

It wasn't Tass. She was incapable of physically harming him. No, it was Mia. She had killed her own daughter. But what was she doing on the Isles?

She suddenly realized she wasn't on the Isles, but in RhyDin. And Mia lay before her, mangled.

"Mommy..." And then the light was gone from her eyes.

"NO!"

She blinked. She had yelled aloud and hadn't realized it. She had stopped walking at some point and was simply standing in the middle of the street, staring off into space. People were staring at her as she wiped beads of sweat from her forehead with her arm.

It was just a dream. Just a horrible horrible daydream. Mia was still safe and sound in Lavinor. She hadn't hurt anyone.

Somewhere in the back of her mind she could hear Melantha's laughter echoing and then fading off.

The DreamWitch... damn her.

"Amazing moredhel, you've improved quite a bit lately."

"Your shocked tone gives me such a vote of confidence, lizard."

Kitty glanced aside at the gold dragon as he observed her practice. What he didn't know was she had gotten some additional advice from her sister.

"I don't know what's going wrong, Chryrie. It seems the harder I concentrate, the more difficult it is."

"That's your problem, Kitty. You're thinking too much about it. That's what psions usually do. They overthink. Magic is meant to be felt. Feel the power within you and then let it flow. Eventually you'll figure out how to manipulate it to do what you want."

"Well it hasn't helped I keep getting those horrid visions thanks to that DreamWitch."

"Don't worry about her. In fact, the more you fret about it, the more it will come up, and distract you. I'm not sure of her intentions, but you must admit, it's made you more determined.

"There is that..."

And so, Kitty did exactly that. She simply felt the magic flow through her. And each day she would focus on nothing else but that feeling and how she wanted to alter it. Until...

"By the Dreamer, you've actually done it."

Khar-Lohn was staring in amazement down the field. She had managed to change the target into a pot of flowers. They were dead flowers, but it was a huge improvement over simply exploding them.

Kitty just grinned as she looked at her accomplishment. "Yeah... I did."

And like that... the weight of an intrusion inside her fizzled away. The visions were gone, and she knew it.
