A Fox Mask

She came to the garden with wishes behind her tongue, the taste of it hovering as she passed through forever green and blooms tailored to her dreams.

She stopped long enough to bow her head respectfully to the gathering willows swaying over reflective pond, they bowed back and here Ran's mouth curled in expression. Gloved fingertips spread, splayed, in passing she touched the speckled leaves of willow toward the patch of earth that was hers and hers only. A small corner of the garden that responded solely to her and not her father.

She thanked the grass she crushed beneath her knees as she lowered, for cushioning her, which scented the air sharp and crisp in return.

"A gift," she murmured to the earth that held shivering new shoots, each one representing new growth in her own life. "I wish a gift suitable, I do not know what to get him."

The wind came and made all the little flowers titter in rustle like school girls following behind handsome boy.

Ran peeled off her gloved and buried her fingers in the earth. Rich, warm on the surface from the sun but chilled beneath from shade and water, the smell of dirt filled her nose as something gold shimmered up into her palm.

Ran's dirt stained fingernails trapped it and held it up to the light. An ancient old coin worn by touch, strange language written across. A man and a bear struggled with one another. She did not entirely understand what the gift meant or if it would mean anything at all, to Nikolai, really, but...The garden had given in to her wish and that was a first step. She did not know it, but her father had watched her quietly from the twisted trunks of willow she'd passed earlier. He smiled when the coin was held to the light and disappeared into the garden further.

Had it not been for the light reflected from coin onto the ground, Ran might not have even noticed the strange way one of the lotus further away was sitting.

Arising to make her way toward the lotus bloom, it was noted that it had begun to wilt. Leaf's white head had slightly began to droop toward the earth below him.

Ran's brows drew as she settled in to whisper of green things, work at the earth around it and listen.
