Within the city of Rhy?din, letters begin to appear: they are left in libraries, in mailboxes, tacked to tavern walls, or simply floating down streets in the dirty snow. Who has left them and where they come from seems to be absent knowledge. The letter itself is printed in plain black on old white paper which somehow survives the weather:

Pantherghasts & You: An Informational Guide

Panthergaunts and pantherghasts are both extra-planar creatures that can be summoned. They look like large, skeletal felines that can be as small as a panther or as large as a vehicle. Because of the extremely deadly and powerful nature of panthergaunts and ghasts, it is a ritual that can usually only be preformed by only the most adept magic users; less experienced magic users will usually flaw the ritual and suffer a myriad of backlashes, both magical and non-magical.

It is unsure what plane panthergaunts and ghasts actually come from, but theorists suspect they are from the lesser known Plane of Hunting.

Panthergaunts and ghasts have only one mission: to hunt and kill. However, there are boundaries to their abilities. Pantherghasts are attuned to spirits. For example: a pantherghast is attuned to human spirits. It can only attack humans, and similarly, only humans seem to be able to affect and harm it. If there are multiple humans around, the pantherghast?s strength increases to match them; if there?s only one, it?s strength and abilities tend to match that spirit?s strength. Therefore, a pantherghast is usually as even match to whatever its up against. However, if a creature is without a spirit ? such as a construct, like a golem ? the pantherghast cannot attune to its abilities and it can affect the pantherghast. If you are in an area which suffers from pantherghast attacks, it is best to take at least one unspirited creature with you.

A panthergaunt is what spawns pantherghasts. Unlike a pantherghast, which is always attuned to one type of spirit (i.e.: human, dragon, elven, etc.), a panthergaunt may pick and choose its attunement, and therefore is highly dangerous. A panthergaunt usually spawns at least one pantherghast for every unique race it finds.

Mixed-races seem to have a unique advantage against these extra-planar creatures. In my research, I have found that pantherghasts and gaunts seem unable to attune to them. For example.. I met a man in the town of Loritia who was half-human, half-elven. When he was a youth, his village was attacked by pantherghasts, some of which were attuned to humans, some of which were attuned to elves. However, because of the very nature of his being ?racially unpure?, the no pantherghast could attack him and he remained unharmed, unable to attack them as well.

However, I grow concerned. There are rumors now of a summoner who has brought a panthergaunt to Rhy?din and is experimenting on half-breeds, attempting to create a pantherghast that will be able to attune to spirits of mixed-race creatures. In Rhy?din, where almost every cultural heritage is mixed, this would be an extremely dangerous advantage.

Be warned: both panthergaunts and pantherghasts are extremely intelligent. If you see one in the area and it is attuned to your spirit, I highly suggest a singular course of action: run.

OOC Information:

So how can you toss some pantherghast lovin? in your life? It?s easy, I promise: they?ll be hunting. You can have them attuned to your character?s spirit, or an NPC?s spirit that your character happens to see or try to help. You can have them attempting to attack half-breed characters, and probably failing miserably. You can have them throw a party and invite you to tea, only to viciously maul you and try to eat your faces. The possibilities are endless!

If you have any questions, feel free to toss me a PM!

Additional OOC notes:

- Pantherghasts/gaunts can be brought down by brute force, but they seem most affected by magic-based, magically infused, or magically touched attacks or weapons. I.E.: A regular bullet from a regular gun isn't going to do as much damage as the guy with the big magical sword. Plus, it's sort of hard to shoot a skeleton, I think.

- Pantherghasts/gaunts have no spirit, so they cannot be summoned to attune to their own race. Although that's kind of funny.

- If you decide you want to summon a pantherghast for some kooky reason and your character has enough experience to do so without backlash, keep in mind that pantherghasts do not obey or hold loyalty to the summoner. They're just there to hunt stuff. Panthergaunts, being pretty damned intelligent, may be the sort of creature your summoner might be able to make deals with though. Or something!

- Yes, you can totally feel free to play this badboys yourself in your forum threads, SLs, and other shenanigans! If you're confused about anything, come harass me. It'll be great, I promise.

Ashe stood atop on a rooftop above the city watching the cats; or rather what seemed to be cats made from bone prowl about the city. He hoped that his altitude would give him some way of staying out of the hunt. He watched only because one of the fliers had blown into his face unexpectedly and he took the time to read it. It was then that he decided to seek out these dangerous beasts, his curiousity getting the better of him as it often did.

His blade, The Dark Sky, hummed its opinion, the strong magical pressure not going unnoticed by its wielder. "Not our fight, old friend," he replied to the spirit that inhabited the blade though he watched the orphanage in which he resided with intent. Should these beasts go there, then it would become his fight for better or for worse. The children meant much to them even if they had seldom seen him as he lived in the attic of the orphanage, rather than amongst the children.

"Interesting," as he watched a skeletal beast seemed to sniff the air and then dart down an alleyway. the cats had no noses to smell with, but it seemed they had no trouble seeking out their prey. As the cat went on the hunt, so did the thief. He followed the skeleton, leaping over rooftops as it jetted down the alley. It wasn't his fight, he told him again, but a part of him wanted to insure that it would not become his fight.
