Dirk was anticipating, and dreading, the phone call that was to come. Cole's parents called every weekend to check up on him. Typically worried parents, they did their best to nag and cajole Cole into coming home. Of all of their children, they worried the most about their youngest son. They knew the entire history of Cole and Dirk's relationship and were none too pleased that the two were back together. Dirk didn't have the best reputation, and when it came to the Hayes family, Mr. and Mrs. Hayes had had enough of Dirk Stevens.
So when Cole's cell phone started to ring, Dirk didn't even have to look at the screen to know who it was. He flipped open the phone and answered it. Of course Mrs. Hayes wanted to know where her son was and why Dirk was answering. He gave the shortest, simplest explanation. He told her about the fight in the bar, well at least the part about Cole being attacked, and that because of it, how Cole couldn't speak. Needless to say, Mrs. Hayes was dubious. She didn't believe Dirk for a second. He was a known liar. She started imagining Dirk and Cole fighting once again. It wasn't a far stretch at all to imagine it. She put two and two together in her head and her mind was set. Cole had hurt himself, once again, due to the bastard on the other end of the line.
Dirk was relaying what Mrs. Hayes was saying to Cole who was sitting right there. Of course, she wanted to see her son, as soon as possible. And Dirk agreed. He didn't want any more animosity between himself and his in-laws. After the failed marriage to their daughter, he had a lot of ground to cover to make amends. And that's just what he wanted to do. He had no idea that when that phone call ended that Mr. and Mrs. Hayes were planning on putting Cole somewhere that neither Cole nor Dirk could ever hurt him again.
Looking back, it should have seemed strange to Dirk. No sooner than they get there and Mr. and Mrs. Hayes say that they have to leave for a while. Dinner date with old friends they said. Why would they go out so suddenly if they had wanted to see Cole so badly? But he never gave it a second thought. And after they left, Dirk and Cole spent a little bit of intimate time on the couch. The words "Cole and Dirk forever." scrawled on Cole's notepad. If Dirk had known what was to happen next, he never would have asked for that Coke. He would have pulled Cole down into his lap and held onto him, forever.
Cole had went into the kitchen, where Mrs. Hayes had told the driver and attendants to wait. She warned them that if Dirk got wind of what was to happen that Dirk would get violent. No sooner did Cole grab a couple of cans of Coke from the fridge, he was grabbed up by two men in the typical white shirt and black pants uniform of the ambulance company that was hired to come get him. Of course, unable to speak or make any sounds from his throat, Cole wasn't able to scream out to Dirk to let him know. They had taken him out to the ambulance, strapped him into the gurney and were closing the doors to the ambulance before Dirk was the wiser.
Dirk had heard the can of Coke fall and he just knew something was amiss in the kitchen. "Cole?" he calls out, as he enters the room. He searches the entire kitchen, hazels going from the opened fridge, the stove, cabinets, washer and dryer. No sign of Cole. Then he hears the doors to the ambulance close and he rushes for the door. He threw it open, the curtains swaying violently as the doorknob slammed into the wall. "Cole!" as starts to run for the ambulance. But it was too late, they had already started to pull away. "Cole!" he screams out, as he chased that ambulance for half a block. "Cole.." he cries as he comes to a stop in the middle of the road. He turns and runs at top speed back to the house, to his truck. His tires squealed in protest as he gunned the engine and took off after the ambulance.
Inside the ambulance, they had Cole securely fastened to the gurney. It was standard operating procedure for suicidal patients. How were the attendants to know that he wasn't suicidal? They were just doing their jobs. And the tears fell like rain from Cole's olive colored eyes. The only thing keeping him sane was the thought of Dirk. He knew in his heart that Dirk would come for him. That Dirk wouldn't let anything bad happen to him ever again. He clung to the hope like it were a lifeline. Dirk would come.
Dirk was chasing down that ambulance in his truck. It wasn't long before he could see it turn into the hospital parking lot. "Hang on baby..." he whispers as he pushes the accelerator to the floor. Once in the parking lot, Dirk slams on the breaks behind the ambulance and puts his truck into a broadside behind the ambulance, nearly smashing his truck into it. He jumps out and runs into the hospital in time to catch up with the gurney and Cole in it. He takes his hand and looks down at Cole. "Don't worry baby, I'll get you out of here." And no sooner are the words spoken when Dirk is pulled violently away and they continue to whisk Cole down the corridor and through a set of double doors. Dirk did his best to get back to Cole, but with security holding him at bay, there wasn't anything that could be done. He spots Mr. and Mrs. Hayes in the lobby, holding on to one another. He runs over and screams in their faces. "How could you do this?!?" And before he did anything else, he storms out of the lobby. He needed air.
Cole clung to Dirk's hand and he looks up with those huge innocent olive green eyes into Dirk's face. No sooner had the words left Dirk's mouth and the comfort of his grasp was gone. Their hands slipped apart and Cole's banged on the doorway painfully. He thrashed his head back and forth and tried to cry out, but only silent tears fell from his eyes. And as the doctor came over with the syringe Cole looked up, terrified. As the drug poured into his veins, his last coherent thought was "No, please, no..." then olive greens close as does the door behind him.
