?Are you ready?? The voice behind Ella said.
The condensation fogged the upstairs window, so Ella used her index finger to clear away part of it so she could see outside. ?Ready for what?? By now, she was used to voices in her head; they screamed at her all the time. However from time to time, there were those who stepped forward shouting above the others.
?You know,? said the voice again.
?I know many things. I know I am alone right now here, but not alone in life. I know I hear voices in my head constantly, but I am not going to break. I know if I move there could be danger. What is it I?m supposed to know??
?The end is near.?
?Br?agad?ir.? She said calmly, while peering through the condensation. ?The end is not near. Do not waste your time or breath trying to break my mind. I will not allow it, not anymore. If it was all a lie, then I..? She spelled a name across the condensation.
?Oh, but the end is near. I?m not trying to convince you of anything. But, please go on. You?ll what? I?d like to hear your story.?
Folding her arms across her chest and she kept staring through the window. Something outside caught her attention. ?I have no story. I know what this is, I finally figured it out. You break me, you beat me, you bend me to your will and I agree to it not by my choice because I am desperate for him.? Ella softly said.
?Desperate for him??
?Yes, you know.?
?Oh. Him. He?s missing again.?
?No. He?s in my heart, so no matter what you do to me, the memories have not died. If he was a lie, then it is my lie and I?m a liar. I?ll gladly wear that crown.? Unfolding her arms and turning to see nothing but a shadow of herself and she was surprised.
The voice was gone. The shadow lingered. The only Br?agad?ir was her.
Hours later the witch left the room to get a bottle of Absinthe, the little green fairy needed to talk to her. She tucked the bottle into her satchel and ran back upstairs.
The bottle sat on the table for hours as she stared it willing her to show herself and break the silence between them. When she saw a faint flicker move the liquid inside, she pried the bottle opened to let her out.
Nothing happened as it had before. Ella stared and waited for several more hours in case the little fae changed her mind. ?Come out. We?ve played this game long enough.?
?Is ? an mac t?re imithe. Chuir t? air ar shi?l. Anois t? t? i d'aonar.? The sound came from behind Ella again. A pair of wings flickered by the light of the hearth and the shadows danced across the ceiling.
?You think I put the wolf away? I?m on my own?? Still staring at the bottle, she was frankly afraid to actually look at the fae. It was quiet for a long time and Ella finally demanded an answer. ?Tell me. You owe me that much.?
She stood there for another hour waiting. Losing what nerve she had, she finally turned around and again, nothing was there but a lurking shadow from a page in the book. The light hit it so it looked like fairy wings.
