Topic: Take a Look Around

She liked the city during the day, it wasn't as intimidating. With the sun shining, it was actually rather nice. Eileen took the opportunity of having nothing to do-she still desperately needed a job-and no where to go-she didn't really know many people-of poking around the city and getting to know it better.

She was thrilled to see a CD store, of all things! Maybe they could tell her how to get her ipod charged up when electricity seemed to be hit-or-miss depending on which part of the city one was in. For now, it was sitting dead in her backpack with nothing to do put look pretty.

She hesitated at the door of the CD store, spying the coffee shop as well. She fingered the few remaining coins in her pocket. Caffeine, though she hated coffee, and something to eat sounded even better then music at the moment. Changing her direction she headed over to and inside the cafe.

She tried not to appear too nervous once inside, the guys at the Inn had warned her against that. All the same, it was hard to know when a dragon might just pop up out of nowhere! But nope, no dragons in here- she was safe for the moment. She eyed all the Earth related decorations with a barely restrained grin and a little pang of her heart from homesickness.

Despite the yearning for home, it felt good to be surrounded by mostly familiar icons. The band posters, even those she didn't recognize, made her feel right at home in her beat Ramones t-shirt, jeans and worn Vans.

She approached the counter, her stomach growling at the scent of food.

A pretty thirty-something blonde stands behind the counter, lips curled slyly but not unkindly, eyes following the latest hipster into their store. Whenever Earth kids get dropped off in Rhy'Din and their leanings are alternative, they find their way to the cafe with the beautifully retro decor. The woman staring at the newcomer is a little rough around the edges, with her sassy attitude and cigarette-fueled rasp that latches onto her warm, sultry voice, and it lends maturity to her gently aged beauty. With the chopsticks in her hair, she hits that spot between commercial and domestic that adds to the cozy atmosphere in the cafe. Her t-shirt? It's black and mostly hidden behind her red apron, but as she leans a little on the counter to take a look at the young lady in front of her, John, Paul, George and Ringo peek their heads out, walking that famous crosswalk.

"Hey there, darlin'. What can I get for ya today?" Her lips twist in a little smile.

The cafe is nearly deserted at this juncture, though it'll soon be packed. The socialists are debating the usual topics in the Audge, and a ponytailed rocker sits on the edge of the stage, completely absorbed in tuning his guitar.

She gave her biggest smile to the woman behind the counter. The Beatles shirt definitely helped, her sister had the same one. Back on Earth.

Whatever.

"Um..could I have a small coffee and what kind of breakfast food do you have?" Sure, it was getting closer to lunch but she was still working on college student time which meant breakfast was a meal that could be eaten at any time of the day.

Brown eyes flickered about the place a bit more, a smile at the guy playing the guitar. If there was one thing Eileen lived for, it was live music of any kind.

She can swear that the guitarist winks. But when she looks hard, he's still tuning his guitar, head bent to listen to the strings reverberate with his gentle touch. Perhaps the barrista saw it, 'cause she looks kinda like she might be smirking for a moment. "Sure, honey. Sugar... cream? And I'm afraid..." She looked from the tray where they kept food warmed up to the girl, and back again. After a moment, she grabs the breakfast biscuit wrapped up and passes it to her. "That's all we have left - sorry, love." She knows why she gave up the breakfast biscuit she'd fixed for herself... she recognizes that girl. It's her, twenty years ago.

A whistle of greeting issues from the guitarist, chuckling over his work now, eyes momentarily raised to a really big, bald guy making his way in through the front door, a regular big friendly giant. He smiles broadly at him and the barrista and makes his way over as the woman fixes that cup of coffee.

She blinked, a little confused. Maybe the guitar player had something in his eye? Maybe she had something in her eye! Her fist was then enlisted to rub vigourously at her eyes. Vision clear, check!

"Lots of both, please!" She hated coffee, always had. However, it was a necessary evil to function sometimes.

She took the breakfast biscuit with eager eyes, not even caring what was in it, "This is perfect, thanks! How much will all of this be?" She dug into her Hello Kitty coin purse, having moved any of the money Mr. Ravenlock had given her into it.

Hazel eyes were raised from her coin purse at the whistle to Mr. Clean.

Eileen catches the woman in the middle of greeting "Mr. Clean" with a "Hey, Joe, your head's looking squeaky clean as usual," so a little tap of her fingers to the price appearing on the register is her reply to the girl's question. It's a fair price.

"Now that's no fair, Daisy," says Joe, his eyes flickering over the chalkboard behind Daisy's head as she starts preparing Eileen a cup of coffee.

"What'll it be, Joe?"

"You know what I like," he replies with a deep chuckle.

"Fair enough," she says with an eyebrow waggle, capping Eileen's cup. "I take it Green's watching the place?"

Joe raises his eyebrows, his broad, good-natured features wrought into some degree of concern. "No, actually, and I figure I ought to hurry back. Green's working part-time now, and Jenna's not very consistent, either. I can never get her to come in on weekends. And it's all your fault, and your foxy friend's, too," he adds, pointing an accusing finger at the guitarist, who just chuckles.

A light comes on in Daisy's head, and as she leans on the counter a little to hand Eileen her coffee, she catches her eyes: "Hey sweetie, are you new around here?"

She dug into the heart-shaped purse. A few more weeks and she'd get a handle on the currency for sure. Until then, she fumbled through it before finding the right amount.

She listened quietly to the conversation, exchanging money for her coffee, until called upon to participate, "Err..yeah I guess you could say new." She blushed a bit, had she given herself away? She knew she hadn't really been gawking as no one in here was sporting wings, horns or any other supernatural appendages at the moment. Then, her former confidence that she used to have in spades asserted itself with a quirky grin, "Actually, yeah I'm like brand new around here. Straight off-world and confused as hell."

Joe opens his mouth to consider, getting the same idea as Daisy, when Keaton interrupts, still looking down at his guitar, tightening one of the strings: "Hire her, Joe. She's a Ramones fan, and punk rockers are a dying breed in this town."

Joe squints at Keaton... but squints super hard at Eileen. He's a big guy, towering over her, so it's a little unnerving, until his face breaks into a big grin. "All right. Whaddaya say - er - what's your name?" His eyebrows raise in question, and Daisy and Keaton look over, too.

A dying breed? Perish the thought! That must not be.

She felt a little squirmish under the squinting eyes of the big guy- Joe. Little shift from one foot to the other as they were practically deciding her fate here. A job meant money and money meant food and a place to live. Those two things were a necessary evil.

Then those two simple words-All right-brought her unbridled joy. She gave a little jump and cut her first through the air in a victory pump, "Awesome!"

Of course, now all eyes were on her and she crept back into her nervous-girl shell, "Err..Eileen..like the Dexy's Midnight Runners' song. Eileen Bennet."

No sooner does Eileen mention the song than Keaton starts it, singing the first part before the chorus softly to himself. He's grinning widely, even as he looks away and goes to put the guitar away.

Daisy blinks at the fox for a moment. "...He's a nut. You'll get used to him eventually." She leaves from behind the counter, dirty rag in tow, giving Eileen a hip bump and a wink as she passes on by, leaving Joe to do his boss thing.

The big guy's got his arms folded, but he's grinning like everybody else here. "I'll see you at nine o'clock tomorrow morning. Expect to work 'til five - we'll figure out the rest of your work schedule then. Fair - " He pauses as he glances over at Daisy and Keaton. The fox has backed away from the stage, shoulders now squared against Daisy's, and he's singing the chorus of the song to her, while she's giggling and swatting threateningly at him with the rag. Joe's eyebrows go up... and he looks back at Eileen. "Er. Fair enough?"
