And while the Mistress was safely tucked away in Exodii, Alex decided to do something he should've done a long time ago....

The shuttle craft landed neatly on the landing pad beside the Academy grounds. Alex emerged and locked the shuttle, walking briskly to the front door. He knew his way around well enough to walk in and make his way to the Headmaster's office. A single white rose held in his hand.

"Good morning Melody. A lovely flower for the beautiful lady.. For you."

He offered the flower to her, along with a smile warmed in his emerald hues.

"I've come to see the Headmaster. Is he available?"

Briarius

"Feel free to enter Master Arrowny.", the Headmaster called from his office.

The Headmaster was seated at his desk, writing in a large book.

His gaze shifted from Melody to the doorway, leaving the assistant with one of his helpless shrugs while he got up and moved into the Headmaster's office.

He took a deep breath before he crossed the threshold of that doorway. Alex closed the door behind him as he entered, giving them the privacy he wanted.

"Greetings, Sir. I hope I'm not bothering you too much but I felt I needed to talk to you about something."

He took a few steps in, feeling that boisterous self from the other room slip away and revert. Something about him seemed wary and yet he didn't feel he had a choice. He had no where else he felt he could go.

"I really don't want my mother knowing about this. It's been kind of a sore spot with her.... but I think I've come to a crossroads of sorts. I'll trust that you won't tell her. I think I might need to study magic a bit more..."

Alex had never studied it other then to gleen scientific understanding. So he let that thought trail while he remembered the day Briarius tried to save his unborn sister. He could still see the strange image of his mother holding her. It haunted him.

Briarius

Briarius stopped, set his pen in it's holder, and looked up at Alex.

"I was under the impression that the concept of the arcane disgusted you Master Arrowny."

The Headmaster let that thought trail a bit.

"...and of course I will be discreet if that is your wish."

AlexArrowny

His steps took him to stand behind the chair, which was set in front of the desk. Long digits came to rest atop that chair and a heavy sigh escaped. As the headmaster looks up to take in a closer look at Alex, the darker shade beneath his eyes is apparent. Alex hasn't been sleeping well.

"I do admit it has not been my forte in the past, but... ever since the day you tried to bring her back, I keep seeing this strange glow to most everything... and I keep seeing her. I saw her that day in my mother's arms while she held her, and wept."

He paused, long enough to come round to the front of the chair and sit down.

"Sometimes I see a little girl running down the hall.. just brief glimpses, always brief glimpses. Sometimes I look out the window and see her, an young adult, running through the Sanctuary gardens. At first I think it might be Tina... but the stance is all wrong, the height too tall and the clothes.. always she's wearing white robes. No matter which form she's in, I feel.. I feel it is the same being. I believe it is Isabel."

Emerald hues were intense.

"I've tried to scan the area for anomolies but the only thing found are faint psionic waves and slight wisps of magic... as if the flow that is already present from the magical properties of the building were disturbed by the passing of something... yet nothing is there. No one else has seen anything strange or heard anything that I'm aware of. I don't know why now I am. I can only assume I may be developing magical talents. You're the first I've told."

Briarius

"Considering your lineage, I would not be surprised."

The Headmaster thought for a moment.

"This may seem an odd question, but humor me. Do you dream of dragons?"

AlexArrowny

Date: 2007-11-28 19:57 EST
His jaw clenched and his gaze averted for a moment. Briarius had just touched on something rather unpleasant to Alex. Mixed emotions of disgust, loathing, trepidation and deep fear welled up inside him that he wasn't or couldn't hide it. Yet his tones were cool, unemotional.

"No, not dreams. Nightmares... ever since I can remember. Random intervals that have been unpredictable. Sometimes years pass without an occurance. Lately, though, it's every night and with such an intensity... I sometimes don't know if I'm conscious or not."

His gaze finally came back to Briarius.

"I dread that part of me because of the nightmares... and even more so, I fear it... and sense it is with good reason."

Briarius

"Well, you have all of the classic symptoms of being a sorcerer, mayhap even more."

The Headmaster stood, turned to his books and picked one out. He flipped through the tome's pages until he came to what he was looking for.

"You see sorcerers, like myself, are not bound to study as traditional wizards. Many who wield the arcane do so at great study. I have advanced my magicks with study, but in all reality, I could simply train and meditate and the magick would come."

He set the book down in front of Alex.

"It is said that sorcerers posses the blood of true dragons. It is also said that some sorcerers are able to follow a more esoteric path which allows them to actually become draconic."

He looked up at Alex.

"You can run from your blood Master Arrowny, but eventually it will consume you unless you learn to harness and control it first."

AlexArrowny

Date: 2007-11-29 16:16 EST
"Hmm..."

His baritones made it sound like a low rumbling growl for a brief moment as he looked over the book.

"You and I both understand the draconic blood that flows from my mother. But what we don't understand... is the blood of my father."

His gaze looked up to the Headmaster as if a child disturbed by their own acts and seeking a forgiveness for something that he knows there is no forgiveness for.

"That's what haunts me. That is what I fear... that it will overpower me, take control in my weakness to control my draconic side. She told me once she suspected him of Daemon kind, or something closely linked in some way. But it was never proven what that was. What, if in studying this, I can't control myself? Understand that my dreams are of a monstrous thing doing unspeakable acts... that monstrous thing is me."

Briarius

The Headmaster thought and spoke to himself.

"A tiefling with draconic blood...fascinating."

He shook his head to clear his meandering thoughts.

"Regardless Master Arrowny, do you wish to even attempt the focus and control you need to prevent this horrifying situation from happening..."

He turned and walked to his window and spoke over his shoulder."

"...or wish you to just ignore it and let it destroy you? You are my ex-wife's grandson, I know what that entails as far as personality goes. I will not be able to force you into any choice, but I can inform you and hope that you will do what is right. Come over here Master Arrowny."

He waited for Alex to join him at the window over the courtyard where several students were. Some were hurrying to classes. Some were playing a game in the yard. Others were sitting and enjoying lunch. The crisp autumn was the backdrop.

"I have seen much Master Arrowny. Look over the courtyard here. Look at all these young people living their lives. Do you wish to force things to stay the same, or will you accept change. Change is inevitable. It was once said 'It is not necessary to change. Survival is not mandatory.' I have thousands of years of these proverbs. Do you want more?"

AlexArrowny

Tiefling, Draconic.. and Erim.... Alex was a strange mix of unknown elements that each part struggled for dominance while he struggled with the never ending battle for balance inside of himself. Watching the children, as he stood next to Briarius, gave even more fuel to the fire within. His skin was pale and his visage grew weary.

"That's why I'm here, to seek your help in this change. I know I can't do it alone, shouldn't be near anyone.. especially those children.. and mother should be kept ignorant of all of this, at least for now. How do we do this, Headmaster? Can you keep me someplace where they will be safe from me until I do learn to control?"

Emerald hues seemed to alight with the light of a distant hunger, or desire... maybe both.

Briarius

The Headmaster walked to his door and touched a sapphire inlaid in the frame.

"Demon Lab"

The door became a portal and the Headmaster ushered Alex through.

As Alex passed through, all of the technology on him failed all at once as did all magicks. In fact, any urges within him seemed to be suppressed a bit. The room was wood and cut stone. There were many symbols on the floor and walls. Tables were covered with bottles and jars. There were two tables with chains.

"This is where I do many of my more...dangerous experiments. You will be safe and undetectable here. In addition, nothing happens here unless I say it does."

AlexArrowny

Date: 2007-12-02 20:12 EST
"Aptly named. I hope it does like you say..."

Alex had some doubts about the Nothing happening unless he said so part, but he did have confidence that whatever might happen in there wouldn't be allowed outside of it. His gaze lingered on the portal.

He hadn't expected to be here, though being here made him feel better. He wasn't sure he wanted to step back out if the room ... He felt the need to just stay here where the sensations were supressed..

"We should start now."

Alex didn't want to think about it. Giving up these things was like giving up his first love. If he thought about it, he would stop himself. So his movements were swift, his decision made. He just took off all his handy dandy technological gadgets and handed them to the Headmaster.

"You'll need to return those to my second in command.. and only to him... with the story that I've gone on a sabbatical of my own. Or they will wonder why my communication equipment just failed. An investigation is probably already begun by now. Tell them you opened a portal to another realm for me -- which blocked communication equipment. That wouldn't exactly be a lie. Tell them my leave is indefinite but that you will help me return when I am ready and that my wishes are to not reveal my location...."

"I can write up a note to confirm this and that my location is meant to be secret, as is my absence for now, especially from my mother. They'll comply with it for as much as they can.. If they don't know everything, they can't tell her."

He moved to one of the tables with the shackles and placed his hands down upon it, leaning his weight onto his hands. His gaze lingering on the metal shackles. He could imagine himself locked away in them, fighting against their confinement. He knew he had not come here too soon.

"What's next?"

Briarius

Date: 2007-12-03 07:22 EST
The Headmaster took the things and placed them in the chair in front of his desk. He then re-entered and snapped his fingers. Alex would be able to feel shifting of magicks as more comfortable furniture appeared.

"You are not a prisoner, you should have nice things. Food will appear on your table as you need it. The beginning is you will sit on that round rug and meditate. Focus on yourself. See the inner workings of your spirit. Focus on that. I will return soon, but do as I say for now."

The Headmaster left and closed the portal.

AlexArrowny

Alex sat down atop the table as Briarius moved to put the items into his office. The place was pretty drab and dreary, but he knew it wasn't meant to be a vacation spot. Still, he was thankful for the change of decor and comfort zone to something a little more pleasing. Emerald hues softened with appreciation.

"Thank you, Briarius. I will do as you've asked."

He watched the Headmaster leave and the portal close. The room filled with silence as Alex went to the center of the round rug and sat down on the floor, drawing his long legs closer to cross in that Indian style and letting his arms lay across his legs. He stared at the wall and his gaze wandered over the surface until he found a chip in its smoothness to focus upon.

The silence grew, chasing away his focus for the longest time until Alex got used to the deafening allure of that silence. He'd never known silence such as this. No stray thoughts or fleeting emotions to catch, no whispers out of no where and no one calling him on the communications devices. There was no catastrophe occurring, no reports to fill out and no one giving you yet another assignment. Perhaps this was going to be a vacation after all.

Alex started to let his mind wander to other things. Finally after several long moments, he began to focus on himself, thinking about his spirit and inner workings, thinking deeper into who and what he was...

AlexArrowny

Date: 2007-12-14 18:46 EST
With nothing to distract him, Alex was able to ignore his surroundings and focus. He thought about his mother, his brother, his grandmother Sharilis and grandfather Pyriathin, even his great grandfather Excalibur and his Woodshadow family. They were strong influences in his life even though many of them were just.. not around any more. Yet his thoughts shifted to his real father, the one he never knew, never met under circumstances that he'd remember.

Derokis Finar. There wasn't much Alex knew about him. The man was tall, had red hair and green eyes like himself, was a Knight in the Order of the Crimson Star, a guild that his parents had belonged to when they met. Derokis had been kind, gentle and considerate to Sha'uri, up until the time they were to be wed. His father never arrived for the ceremony.

Alex hated his father for abandoning his mother like that. Sha'uri had told him that it was because Derokis didn't want to influence Alex, didn't want to spread the darkness he was to him, but the boy never understood it, and neither did the grown man. He found, that as he got older, he hated his real father even more.

He also realized he was jealous of his own half brother, having a father that doted on him... something Alex never had. In fact, as time had gone on, he realized Triv would never bE a father figure to him, too busy doting on his boy.. Bryce. Blood was definitely thicker then water with that one though Triv had been considerate to Alex and had shown the attempt. It was obviously just not the same as with Bryce and probably never would be that way with Alex. He had reason to think Triv spent more time with Bryce then with his own wife. He was seriously beginning to wonder about his mother's latest, the only one she'd married... he wondered if it hadn't been another mistake.

The only ones Alex ever had as good parental figures, besides his mother or grandma, was his uncle Bazil for his first few years and then for a few years with the two androids Rock and Roll when he was a little older. Even his own mother had shied away, or maybe he shied away from her, once he turned into a young adult. It wasn't fair to blame her, though. she'd just lost yet another potential mate when he.. what's his name... Galen... abandoned her at the alter in the middle of their vows. It was when she'd ... inherited the Citadel of Mysteries..

Alex shifted uncomfortably and glanced about the room realizing he felt very ... abandoned. The emptiness gripped at him, tore at his spirit. He wanted to rip his focus from it, but it held him spellbound within the incessant vicious circles of his thoughts. He realized he wanted to torture them.

The anger within him continued to build while the nightmares slowly leaked their way into the visions of his mind........ this was not going to be a good thing and he felt himself teetering on the edge of the proverbial bottomless pit....

Briarius

Date: 2007-12-14 20:41 EST
The Headmaster sensed the disturbance in his hidden workroom and excused himself from his Necrology 101 class.

"Alright, for your homework...don't groan, it won't make the homework go away. For your homework, I want all of you to study the basic zombie and come up with 5 methods for effectively dispatching the creature. For those of you who are particularly motivated, for extra credit, do the same for the skeleton. Dismissed."

He stepped through an ethereal shortcut to his office and entered the lab. He had sensed the dark thoughts beginning to take over.

"Master Arrowny! That will be enough for now. Let us sit and have lunch."

As he sat, a spread of fruits, cold meats, and cheeses filled the table. Briarius waited for Alex to get some food before he did. Then, in a rare display, Briarius actually began eating.

"The darkness came didn't it? Don't pay it too much heed. I remember having to teach your grandmother patience. She was a lot of things, but patient was not one of them. I remember once when Alec had gotten ahold..."

He went on for a little while telling him stories.

AlexArrowny

"Master Arrowny! That will be enough for now. Let us sit and have lunch."

He didn't hear his name and the call to lunch almost didn't register in his brain, except the scent of the food brought him around. His bright emerald hues had darkened and his pupils were a draconic shape. His skin had toughened, though the formation of scales had not yet taken place. He'd touched upon and felt for the first time his draconic side. The voice of the Headmaster brought him back from the brink of that pit, leaving him slightly breathless from the whole ordeal.

He waited until his breathing had calmed before he joined the Headmaster. By then, his eyes were back to normal. Emerald hues watched the headmaster eat while Alex merely picked at his food. The quiet one was even more quiet then he normally was. He listened, though, and realized just how much he didn't know about his uncle.

"She never said much about Alec." meaning his mother hadn't spoken of him too often. "Although that bears some resemblence to the one about Great uncle Bazil when tried to open a certain tome... something about a necronomican I believe. He told me about that one once."

He paused to pop a grape into his mouth.

"What was Larissia like?"

Briarius

Date: 2007-12-19 17:47 EST
The Headmaster sighed as a sad look crossed his face.

"My beautiful baby girl, Larissia. Quiet and calm, frail yet smarter than most of her age. She showed the abilities of magick from a very very early age. In fact, Alec used to pick on her quite a bit for being so small and weak...until the day she paralyzed him with magick. He was left in her room unmoving for an hour before I found him all dressed in girl's clothing with makeup on and Larissia reading a book. It took me a full half hour to undo her magick. Alec never bothered her again. I did have a talk with her about the responsibility of her new found powers. She was so beautiful..."

Briarius trailed off there. The memories of his daughter too much for him to bear.

He composed himself.

"...and that is what I have to say to you Alex about your own powers. You must take responsibility for them and not let them destroy you. You are the grandson of my ex-wife, I know you have the strength to handle this."

AlexArrowny

Date: 2007-12-20 16:08 EST
Alex smiled hearing Briarius talk about Larissia. He also understood what the headmaster was warning him about.

"It's why I came to you."

He half played with his food while trying to picture what Larissia and Alec looked like. He was going to ask further but thought better of it, leaving the dead in the past where the pain belonged. His thoughts briefly went to his own lost sister, the one he would never get to meet, to see, to play with, to teach and watch grow up. He thought of his grandmother then. He knew his grandmother was alive, just not here like the rest. It was confusing the way she was talked about at times... like the way the headmaster did, as if the two of them were divorced instead of separated by death.

"Wife... Ex-wife... "

Alex trailed the words letting them hang for a moment, gauging the headmaster intently with his emerald hues. He wondered about some things.

"You called her your wife on Exodii. What would you do if she came back ... here among the rest of us? What would she be to you then? What would you want her to be?"

Briarius

Date: 2007-12-20 16:16 EST
"Difficult to say."

The Headmaster stood and began to pace slowly.

"She did remarry after I was gone from RhyDin. That being said, nullifies any marriage that we had. She also has Ascended...that puts another crimp in things. I want her to be happy. There's the long and short of it. I will live my life here and she will live her life there."

The Headmaster looked down as he stopped.

"I guess that's all there is to it."

AlexArrowny

Date: 2007-12-20 17:43 EST
"Hmm.."

Alex watched him a moment, wondering of his answer... it seemed, diplomatic. He sensed something else that Bri wasn't saying. A different prospective occured to him.

"I don't know how your marriage could be nullified. Perhaps ended, but not null and void. She thought you were dead. In reality, you weren't.... Wouldn't it be the other way around? Her marriage to Pyriathin would be null and void.."

Now there was a crimp that would make his mother illigitamate, his grandmother an adultress... but then again, what did he know. Alex sighed and set his fork down. He wasn't hungry, but he was feeling better with the focus off him. Unfortunately, it seemed to be at the expense of the kind one before him.

"I don't know much of these things. I've never been in love, never even had a girlfriend, let alone had a wife and children to hold or lose as the case may be. You are fortunate you've had these things. It doesn't matter how you feel about her, either way... Perhaps you should talk to her.. Ascended or not... she was your wife first. You're alive, she's alive. Nothing more need be said here. You two owe each other that much instead of running on assumptions... this is something you should do."

There, he'd said his piece. It was the only right thing to do. Now, how that conversation was going to happen, he didn't know, but he was sure one way or another it could happen.

Alex stood and moved to stand by the Headmaster, laying a gentle hand on his shoulder and gave it a squeeze as if to comfort and reassure him.

"So, what's next, Headmaster?"

It was time to focus back on his dealing with this thing called magick.

Briarius

Date: 2007-12-25 19:45 EST
"Focused meditation."

The Headmaster was monotone.

"Focus on dragons in your mediations before dinner. If the darkness comes, remember it cannot hurt you here. Learn from it."

With that, he rose and moved to the exit.

"In a way, I was dead. That Briarius is gone and what is left is a shadow of that man."

He left.

AlexArrowny

Date: 2007-12-26 21:01 EST
Alex waited until the headmaster left before the quiet logical whisper left his lips.

"Shadow.. from shadwe, sceaduw-, sceadu and shade. Meaning: partial darkness or obscurity within a part of space from which rays from a source of light are cut off by an interposed opaque body. i.e. something is in the way because it's a reflected image, a shelter from danger or observation; an imperfect and faint representation; an imitation of something : A COPY. It's a dark figure cast upon a surface by a body intercepting the rays from a source of light .. a PHANTOM ... an attenuated form or a vestigial remnant; a small degree or portion, i.e. a TRACE. It's also a source of gloom or unhappiness; a state of ignominy or obscurity. In other words, Master Briarius.... something is there which means you're very much still alive."

Nodding, Alex turned back to his studies. In many ways, Alex felt as if a shadow except he had nothing to be a shadow by. Or had he? He pondered this while he resumed his meditations on the floor in the center of that circle.

AlexArrowny

Date: 2007-12-30 19:29 EST
Alex had done what he was told, meditated on his Draconic side. It was unnerving the emotions that had rumbled up within him. Several times he had shifted away from it, frightened by their depth and strength. He spent a long time there.. minutes turned to hours turned to days. He lost track of time and found that he stopped thinking about it. Time was meaningless.

Finally he felt something guide him and his form shifted into a dragon. He had a dark purple base with reddish scales and an opalescent silvery hue to the tips. The room grew much smaller as his form grew bigger. It filled the chamber and his form pressed against the walls. His emotions were strong, though mixed. He felt the flow of magic all around him, through him, in him and surge from and to him. His dragon's roar shook the foundation as a painful sadness tore at him. The walls suddenly seemed to dissolve in some sort of magical burst and he suddenly realized he wasn't in the academy any more...

Somewhere In Between

A young man and a girl, both were half elven, he with chestnut hair and green eyes, she with black hair and blue eyes... sat atop a horse of purest white. They moved towards him slowly. Oddly, he knew who they were and he bowed to them as they approached. Then he turned away as they followed him.......

It was some time before he returned. The dragon was alone and he came to stand in the place he was before. The energy shifted away and the room changed, leaving Alex back in the place Briarius had left him earlier. His form eased back into his Elven form as he sat there on the floor in the middle of the circle. His hair was sweat soaked and dripping though he seemed to not notice this... gazing at the floor in deep thought. He understood now, and was in awe...
