Saturday, February 13th, just prior to 7 pm.

Shortly after the Phantom pulled up to the front of The Sassy Owl Saloon the driver started to open the door, but the suit in the back seat shifted and held a hand. ?I?ve got it,? James called out before the same hand lowered to the door handle and pushed outwards.

The suit was reminiscent of the one worn for the Date Auction, but the air around the man held less tension and stress; he was relaxed and no longer tugging on the tie as though it was a noose around his throat. His hair was in its typical cross of bedhead mixed with fauxhawk, clean shaven and no doubt smelled like a bar of Irish Spring soap as opposed to expensive cologne. It covered up the cigarette smoke so much better in his opinion.

In his approach of the front entrance of the building, he carried along a square clear plastic box housing a trio of white plumeria blossoms while he sought out his date for the evening, one Miss Serah Farron.

James being vague on what she should wear would of made any man proud. He had her digging through her closet for hours on end trying to find that sweet spot that was between casual and Cinderella at the ball. Not that she had anything that super fancy to begin with! It wasn't like it was one of those dates to begin with and she wouldn't be surprised if Connie and/or her shadow was going to be there too. Or spying from a distance through binoculars and keeping tabs. The thought did make her giggle.

She settled on something cute rather than fancy. A little red number that was accompanied by designer stockings, a pair of black ankle-high shoes, and just her bracelet to splash in some jewelry. Light makeup came in the form of hushed earth tones and pink lip gloss. The mess of pale pink hair was left mostly to do as it pleased while bangs were clasped to the the back of her head with a silver clasp just so they would stay out of her face.

Once settled on wardrobe she pestered Garrett until it was time to go but it appeared pestering had been the wrong choice in what to do during the wait period. The cook got fussy with her being in his kitchen (and for good reason). With a huffy face, and a small box in hand, she made her way outside to wait for James to arrive. "I'd rather wait outside you grumpy old fart!"

Speak of the devil! She wasn't expecting James to be early or on time so he got to see her huffy face, in all its glory, disappear into a expression of surprise. "Whoa. Hey!" she chirped out, "Well don't you clean up nice." It was a friendly tease and paired with a sunny smile.

True; it wasn?t often that he dressed up as he favored faded t-shirts and thermals with jeans that seen their share of old stains and inconsequential tears. ?Showered just for you and your nose,? the easy grin spread wide as his chuckle was quick to follow. Lifting his empty hand and turning to sniff his underarm before nodding his approval. ?Yeah, I smell good.?

With his arm lowering and then crooking out to her as they met out front, he nodded towards the car. ?You look like you?re ready to get out of here. You cool with cars, right?? Double checking before the possibility of any apprehension presented itself.

?You look nice. Connie likes to say ?There?s a shade of red for every woman.? One of her personal heroes I think said it once or something.? He shrugged off the specifics of it and was left to give her that good natured grin and lead her the short distance to the car.

"Oh be still my heart!" She about died when he sniffed under his arm. Her shoulders trembled but it wasn't from the cold but rather swallowing her own laughter. "I'll take your word for it." She playfully winked and curled her arm to his own. She didn't want to go all up sniffing on him. That might make things super weird!

"I'm good with cars. Didn't know you had one!" She chirped as she was lead to the car. His compliment had her smile turning a tad sheepish. Nooo she wasn't going to tell him how long it took her to get ready! "Thanks!" She tipped her head as she listened to him about the quote from Connie. She had never thought of it. "Was worried that when I wear red that I clashed badly." Pink hair and all.

"Oh!" The small box in hand was tilted this way and that very careful like as she danced it in the air towards him and finally offered it out. She didn't seem to notice he had a box of his own. "These are for yo~ou~" Sing-song words before she explained what it was, "I think I've missed a birthday or two, right? Soooo! Pumpkin spice truffles." There was only a dozen or so which meant he could hide them from Connie, if he was lucky.

Tipping his head away from her to glance at the vehicle, a nod followed as he spoke up, ?Yeah?? If there was anything else at the end of that sentence it was interrupted with the offered out box. ?No kiddin? huh? I?ll trade you. For your hair,? he added. ?If you want.?

Exchanging the trio of flowers in his box for the pumpkin truffles as she explained what was inside. ?Oh hell, we?re eating these on the way.? The newly gifted box was lifted to smell its contents without peering inside and then lowered as he unhooked his arm from hers and opened the door to the backseat for her.

?Speaking of which, on the way I mean --- What are you in the mood for tonight? Dinner? Dancing? Skeeball and Lazer Tag? Karaoke? Movies? The way off broadway play Two Guys, A Girl and a Pizza Place?? The amusement was clear in both his tone and expression and the driver in front could be seen behind the wheel slowly shaking his head and refraining from laughing.

"Hmmm?" He had peaked her curiosity as the box was offered over and she smiled instantly. "They are lovely, James!" She would work on putting them in her hair once they were settled in the car.

Once inside she waved to the driver because he was a person too! Hi, person! Settled in she started working the flowers to the pale pink hair to which she took special care in doing. He posed a super good question but one part of it had her snickering. Two guys and a girl. Behave, Serah!

"You forgot bowling, walk on the beach, mini golf, and amusement park." She pointed out with a giggle, "Which if you haven't been I totally suggest Wonderplex!" Leaning back in her seat she tapped her cheek. "I think we should skip Karaoke. I'd totally own you at that." Challenge thrown down! "Waiitttt. So you haven't planned any of this?" The tease was clear in her tone.

?Clash? Nah. Add some white lace or something and you?re like a walking Valentine.? Shutting the door behind her and walking around to the other side and ease into his own seat, he caught her tease but shook his head while adjusting the dessert box currently in his lap.

Laughing even as he interjected, ?Nothing planned officially. I had an idea or at least something to show you, but I?m the easy going sort and open to it all. But Jason here,? indicating the driver who raised a hand and waved with the aid of the rear view mirror, ?Will take us anywhere for tonight. Basically, if you want to do all of those things? Then we?ll do it. Like I said, easy going so the choice is all yours.?

Cracking open the box of truffles, he plucked one out and then gestured towards her with his free hand, ?And I know that you?re a singer and all, but I?m still the Best Karaoke Singer in town.? Taking a bite and mumbling something that sounded like Damn I love pumpkin, he waited to hear what she was in the mood for, grinning as he chewed.

She looked over to Jason, who was indicated by James for her. Name to a face tho it had her giggling. Tho she was tempted to ask the driver what he thought on where they should go she sat there smiling and watching him melt over the truffles. That was one thing she always enjoyed about his company, he was so easy going and fun. Could make her laugh effortlessly and she was pretty sure he didn't even know it!

"Something to show me? Color me curious!" Oh hum oh hum! What to pick? "How about dinner, dancing, and some singing? We can pretty much find a place that does all of that? We can see just how good you are." Reaching out she poked at James' cheek before speaking a tad louder. "We might have to have Jason beating all the ladies off of you if you do croon that good!"

Serah was victim to that O?Connor charm (or the Clan curse, depending on who you asked) while she was left to fight back the giggles there in her seat. Though James was aware of it, he neither mentioned it nor dialed up the charm for a particular effect.

?What color is curious I wonder? Yellow? Pink? Rainbow maybe.? Cracking a grin at his own joke before she decided what she was interested in doing for the night. ?I know just the place. Common Interest cool with you? It has all of that.? Asking as he picked out another truffle and tilted the box her way in case she wanted to sample one. It could have been a one time only offer!

?Nah, Jason will leave me to the wolves like the good man he is. Won?t you Jason?? Laughing towards the driver as he started up the phantom and started to pull down the street for their destination. ?But not without making sure you get back home safely of course.? Not forgetting to clear that up, there was no chance he?d be abandoning her tonight. She was stuck with the clown for the night.

James' family was quite charismatic for sure. She didn't stand a chance!

"All the above of course. Duhhhh." She swayed her head side to side as she grinned and gave him a nod. "I picked the things, you pick the place!" She looked at the offered treats and gave a thought about it. She shook her head, declining with a sugary sweet smile. "Nope! Those are for you! I had to fight a baker for them and all! Like getting treasure from a dragon!" She did jab a finger towards the driver in case he wanted to give her share to the poor guy driving.

Giggles turned to laughter at his statement of Jason leaving him to the wolves. "Are you kidding? I'd be sitting there cheering!" It was sweet that he was making sure she understood that she would get home safely, one way or another. "Maybe we should set up a safety word for when I steal you away. I've seen how fan girls can get when a guy is on stage."

?Common Interest it is then.? Decision on where they would be going easily handled and the box of truffles closed when Serah declined. ?No kidding? These are from Katt right? Did she get turned into a dragon?? Curious one minute and then accepting the next. ?Well, I suppose stranger things have happened.? Musing on that thought as he popped the second one in his mouth to enjoy.

Mmmmmm was the sound coming from him as he chewed, head bobbing in agreement with Serah?s notion of a safety word. ?Pumpkin.? Suggesting with a half grin before moving the conversation forward. ?So tell me, what?s going on with you lately?? An open ended and vague question, primed for her to answer as she wished while on the way to the karaoke bar and grill.

Her nose wrinkled faintly when he mentioned the scary baker lady. Every time she thought of Katt she remembered about the first time she met her and how freaked out she made Claire. Not exactly the best first impressions. She did end up giggling, however, at the mental image of Katt being a dragon. "Yeah, I got them from her. That is okay right? I mean it is totally better than me trying to bake for you. They probably would of came out like pumpkin scented charcoal." Her hands clasped in her lap and she started to fidget. Yeah she was admitting outright she couldn't cook or bake! No winning a man through his stomach for this gal.

"Pumpkin." She snickered and agreed all in one but she found her gaze drifting off to the window in the process. Mostly because she didn't want to be all weird and watching him nom away on the treats. He was making sounds and asking questions! "Hmmm." That would be the start of it while she tried to think of what was worth talking about. "Oh well lets see it has been like foreverrrrr since you talked to me." Her head rolled as she looked at him and playfully stuck out her tongue. No hard feelings for it. She knew he was a busy fella! Most men were! Her head popped straight and she bounced a little in her seat to face him. "I spent a few months in a club as a manager. It was like one of the number of jobs I have been doing to keep my time filled." For now she left out what those other jobs were.

"After those months passed I was approached by the owner who totally signed over the whole club to me. He told me he had been searching for someone who enjoyed the work to give it to. It is self-sustaining and really fun. Right now it is closed because I am working on a few changes but it should be re-opened sometime during April." As she spoke it wasn't hard to tell her excitement in the Club. Her colorless eyes shined and she had a big, cheeky smile. Ampersand was her pride and joy for sure.

"Besides that there hasn't been much else to bring up." She really didn't want to bring up her breakup, her dying, or any of the bad stuff. She wanted this night to be fun and awesome and not awkward at all. "Sooo what about you? And don't say nothing! I shared! You gotta share too!"

Not missing a beat, ?Pumpkin scented charcoal: Buy it now for your Thanksgiving Bar-B-Que needs! Limited time only!? James rolled out with a quick salesman pitch before she stick her tongue out at him and called him out on it being forever since he?d been around. James just laughed it off as he shrugged.

?Serah, I haven?t even lived here in close to seven years and after Connie moved here, I?d only be here to see her a day or so each month. And you know how portal jumping on a daily basis isn?t any fun,? or at least, he assumed she knew what he was talking about.

?Right, right, Ampersand. I knew you were the Club owner at the auction. This town is probably a good place for businesses like that, city that never sleeps and all right?? While listening, he set the closed box on the seat between them and returned his attention on her. ?What kind of changes? Giving your own personal style to it all since you?ve taken ownership?? The interest and curiosity was clear on his face, even while he relaxed against the seat of the vehicle on the way to the karaoke bar and grill.

Once he had the conversation turned back around to him, he gave her a cheeky grin. ?Expecting me to get a vague answer to a casual question or to turn it all back around and have successfully avoided divulging any personal information or possible secrets? Come on Serah, that?s what first dates are all about. Or no wait, they?re about selling yourself and telling exaggerations to convince the other person that you?re perfect and that?s why you should show up for a second date.?

?Really though, it?s been the usual. I got back from a long job along the coast of Argentina ? ?s a country in Earth and got hired for a job out here maybe a month ago or so. Probably not even that to be honest. And working on the finishing touches on ? well that?s what I had wanted to show you. Working on finishing up a Brew Pub out in Seaside. You being a Club Owner and all, thought it would be worth picking your brain on some of the choices I?ve made for it.? Considering her excitement and the way her face lit up when talking about the Club, he assumed it would be a good idea.

His sales pitch had her snickering. Well played, James, well played! "I know, I know!" was chirped to his excuse of not living in Rhydin and the portal jumping. Yeah she knew it wasn't fun stuff but hey she had to let him know he had been missed! There was so many she knew that simply disappeared never to be seen again so the visit was a nice change from that expectancy.

Idly she found herself toying with a petal of the flower-set in her hair but being ultra careful not to rub the petal too hard as to draw it thin. "I can't tell you that, James. It is suppose to be a surprise so if you really wanna find out you are going to have to wait and see." Hey a Club was a good bait to be in Rhydin, no? "There are some changes that are necessary because the former owner did things a little different. Which is cool and all but yeah I guess you could say giving it my own personal touch." Her shoulders went up briefly just as her hand came down. "There were also a few minor things I wanted to fix. Like there being no AC in the VIP rooms. Makes being in them uncomfortable for some folks and I had been getting complaints." Simple little details and she was sure some of the changes would go unnoticed.

"Totally expecting a super male vague answer." she chirped back at him. "Oh pffff! First date? We both know this is more of a hanging out than a date. Pretty sure by the end of the night I will have to drag you away from a table full of women while you scream banana." Her head tilted and she tapped her chin. "Oh right, Pumpkin." Wrong safety word! Oppsy though the grin said otherwise.

As she listened she tried to place the names to memory if only to google later where this Argentina place was. It was kind of cool to learn about new places even if it was only a few words of description as she was getting from James. Pink brows started to climb when he mentioned the pub. "Whoa wait. You are going to own a business in Rhydin?" Crossing her ankles she started to lean forward. Pub meant beer and now she was curious if he was going to be carrying her fav. "Tell me about it? Or do you plan on showing me? Or both?"

?Okay, okay. April sometime you said?? Reconfirming before a roll of his shoulders was given in response to her question. The air about him was nonchalant, his eyes faintly amused.

?I own a bit of property in the city already and I?ve invested in various projects in the past, so yeah. Seems to be the natural upgrade, shifting into it. Testing the waters, that kind of thing. Still working on putting the finishing touches on a lot of things there, but it?s what I was talking about that I?d want to show you.? Easy explanation as they pulled into the Dockside district.

?It?s out in Seaside, along the water. Gonna try my hand at making my own beers, but going to be in contact with some of the other local breweries and see if they?re interested in selling their own stuff there too. So it?ll be heavily local makes, or at least that?s what my focus and intention is going to be. If my own beers hit it off with the populace, maybe do small brewery tours, branch out to selling my stuff at other local bars, that kind of thing. What do you think?? Interested to know her thoughts on the subject, he?d read her expression and tone in her response.

"Uhhhh huh!" she gave a little sing-song as she confirmed. At least she was shooting for April. Never know how things were going to turn in her life. "Been considering giving up singing and slinging drinks behind the bar." Owner slash bartender. Apparently she didn't know how to keep to one or two jobs!

While he spoke she was listening to all the little tidbits he had to offer. At some point she had to fumble for her phone when it started to sing a little ditty. A text, or by the sounds of it 50, was muted and she turned her attention back to him. Whatever it was could, and would, wait! "Can't go wrong with by the waterside." Course it being her it shouldn't be all that surprising she was all for a water front view! "Well what kind of beer are you leaning towards? You have done your research right?" She grinned and waggle a finger in his direction. "I mean other than drinking beer of course! Are you planning on doing it all solo or are you going to have partners or sponsors?" It was a lot of questions, she knew, but they were good ones to make sure he was covered.

"Maybe when you do your first brew you should have a in-party. People who are friends and family who you know will give an honest opinion to test taste. And if you have anything you would like to put anything on tap at the Ampersand you are always welcome to let me know." It was an offer to maybe sneakily help out if she could and he wanted. "All in all it sounds like you have a solid plan so far or at least a direction you want to go. That is one of the hardest steps!"
