~Another Day at Work~
On the west side of town there is a pub widely known for it's pretty closing tender. A young brunette muse, they say, with gentle green eyes, and a voice from the heavens. Those who have seen her closing know without a doubt of what many admire. The soothing call and song of her voice is far safer than any siren's song, but just as sweet. When she laughs it's like bells that chime softly to the weakest of ears.
During the wee hours of night, those who stay, stay for one thing and one thing alone. It is not the liquor of the booze. It is not the cheap grub or the free nuts. No. It is for the closing checklist and to listen to the young woman sing as she works. Tonight was not different than any other. Tonight the muse sang and the few near listened with baited breath to her song," I was never spellbound by a starry sky. What is there to the moon glow, when love has passed you by. Then there comes a midnight... and the world was new..."
The cold was something unnoticed as steps carried him down the street. As a door swings open and closed like a pendulum, a curious sight flashes past his ears with the soft caress of heavily sound. Eyes shift to the sign above before he is moving inside to see what could make such a lovely symphony.
"At lassssstttt." As she held that note she nodded to the newest entrant, both jade eyes locking upon his features. She continued to wipe the class off as she sang," My love has come along... My lonely days are over... and life is like a sooonnnggggg...." The glass was set upon the shelf and her back turned for a moment," At last the skies above are bluee... oooohhhh oooo... My heart was wrapped in a clover the night I looked at you."
The nod from this Siren returned with a soft smile as he took a seat, just admiring that voice as if rapt in a sweet lullaby. How had he missed hearing of this beautiful song bird. Every move she made was watched with rapture as though watching a masterpiece in motion.
Slowly she moved towards him, her song still in absolute tune," I found a dream that I can speak to... A dream that I... can call my own..." When she was before him, the song was paused so that she could speak and almost an equally soothing tune," What will it be stranger?"
'One burbon, one scotch, and one beer.." The classic tones of George Thoroughgood flowing from his lips perfectly as if it were the man himself. A teasing grin to her as he fished out a handful of crowns to cover the cost though he knew many in this town just took without paying.
Slender brows just lifted and she nodded. In silence she gathered up the burbon, scotch, and beer before setting it before him. The crowns were taken in exact amounts, no extra taken in the slightest. She paused, gathered up a few dishes, and mused," Let me know if you need anything else, won't you?"
"You would not believe your eyes, if ten million fireflies lit up the world as I fell asleep. Cuz they'd fill the open air and leave tear drops everywhere. You'd think me rude, but I'd just stand and...stare." Her question met with a smile and a nod. "I'd like to make myself believe, that planet Earth..turns..slowly. It's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm a sleep cuz nothing's ever as it seems..."
His singing had turned heads for sure. She had been doing her best to keep her silence for a few lingering moments, but at the sound of the tune played off his lips her head turned. Both of her eyes locked with his for a moment, observing him with her curiosity. A small smile spread upon her lips then a blush. Dark hair was pulled back and tied up upon her head.
"Cuz I'd get a thousand hugs from ten thousand lightning bugs as they try to teach me how to dance. A foxtrot above my head, a sock hop beneath my bed. A disco ball is just hanging by a thread. I'd like to make myself believe..that planet Earth turns sloooowly. it's hard to say that I'd rather stay awake when I'm asleep. Cux everything is never as it seems...when I fall asleep." He even smiled at her. "Leave my door open just a crack, cuz I feel like such an insomniac. Why do I tire of counting sheep when I'm far too tired to fall asleep? To ten million fireflies, I'm weird cuz I hate goodbyes. I got misty eyes as they said farewell."
Bells of giggles fell from her and she shook her head. Listening to him sing, those glasses were dried and set upon the shelf. Once she was done with that she moved for a clean rag. When he sang, she listened until the very end when she began to sing with him. Her smile ever present, however she shadowed him at the end," Said farewell..." Ear to ear she grinned, both eyes locking on him again.
As their brief duet came to an end he lifted the bourbon up in a toast to her before taking a drink. Time to see how far her knowledge stretched. "Baby when I met you there was peace unknown. I set out to get you with a fine tooth comb. I was soft inside, there was something going on..."
Both of her brows lifted, her closing duties were abandoned as she settled on a table top not far away from Cain. Others around them observed in silence, taking random drinks from the glasses before them," You do something to me that I can't explain... Hold me closer and I feel no pain... Every beat of my heart. We got something going on..."
"Tender love is blind. It requires dedication..all this love we feel needs no conversation. We can ride it together Ah ha." A smile playing over his lips firing another lyrical volley back at her with a pleased appearance about him.
She found it odd for a moment that he left the next line to her. A brow lifted, she grinned softly," Making love with each other, ah ha... Island in the stream... Thats where we are, no one in between..."
"How can we be wrong. Sail awy with me, to another world. And we rely on each other ah ha. From one lover to another ah ha. " The grin returned as he took that moment to move on to his scotch, swirling the contents of the glass idly as he shifted spurred boots onto a nearby chair.
"And we rely on each other, ah ha... From one lover to another, ah ha." Was sang in unison with him. She lounged back, continuing as he moved over to a closer chair," I can't live without you if the love was gone, Everything is nothing when you got no one.. And you walk in the night... "
"Slowly losing sight of the real thing. But that won't happen to us and we got no doubt. Too deep in love and we got no way out...the message is clear. This could be the year for the real thing." The smile on his lips never wavered as royal blue eyes matched her facial expressions step for step.
Slowly she leaned forwards towards him, still grinning a bit," No more will you cry, baby I will hurt you never... We start and end as one.. In love forever... We can ride it together, ah ha.." She then stood up and began to return to her duties. The one in particular was wiping tables.
"Making love with each other ah ha. Islands in the stream that is what wer are. No one in between, how can we be wrong. Sail away with me. To anotehr world. And we rely on each other ah ha...from one lover to another aha." He trailed off the final chorus setting down his empty scotch glass, eyes still only on her as if she were the only person there.
She trailed with him," Islands in the sream, that is what we are... No one in between... How can we be wrong... Sail away with me. To another world... And we rely on eachother, ah ha... From one lover to another ah ha.." When she finished, she giggled softly. A soft wink was sent his way before she bowed her head. He was by far the most exciting customer she had experienced all night.
With the song over he was pleased with the results and took in the room gently, sometimes these places had a piano. He hadn't tickled that kind of ivory in some time.
He wouldn't be disappointed, there in the corner was that ivory. As she moved to wipe down the lasts of the tables she pulled her hair to one side of her neck. The sweet aroma of honey and strawberries would fill any sensitive nostril.
Best to let her keep with her duties though that sweet scent stopped him near dead in his tracks, with a turn her way. Almost a coy smile for her before sitting down at that piano and giving the keys a gentle touch to test their tuning before he began to play. "It's nine o'clock on a Saturday. The regular crowd shuffles in. There's an old man sitting next to me...making love to his tonic and gin." A grin to the old man close by..doing just that.
For once it seemed that she was content to listen and not be listened to. She smiled towards him as he sang hardly noticing the voice that called," Maerlyna, can I pay my tab please?" It was enough to get her attention however. She lifted her head and started towards the bar once more as she answered," Sorry about that, let me get it for you."
"He says 'son can you play me a memory? I'm not really sure how it goes but it's sad and it's sweet and I knew it complete..when I wore a younger man's clothes." His fingers danced across the keyes with practiced ease, a few of the remaining patrons joining in the chorus. "La la la, di da da. La la di di da da dum. Sing us a song, you're the piano man. Sing us a song tonight. Well we're all in the mood for a melody and you've got us feeling alright."
"There you go, Tony." She stated to the man as his change was returned.
The man smirked and murmured," When are you gonna come sing for me in private Maerlyna?"
Maerlyna perked a brow northwards and shook her head slightly," I don't do private shows. My voice is to be enjoyed by everyone." She moved to leave, but paused when his hand closed around her arm. It was clear with the look on his face that he didn't like rejection. Slowly she shrugged off the grip and muttered," Get some rest Tony, you're drunk."
His eyes watched the man who grabbed the other songbird with a brief narrowing. "Now John at the bar, is a friend of mine. He gets me drinks for free. And he's quick with a joke and he'l llight up your smoke. Bu there's some place he'd rather be. He says Bill I believe this is killing me' as his smile ran way from his face."
Like it or not, she knows how to handle Tony on a bad day, this... is a good day. When he grabs her arm again she turns to face him. Both brows lift up and she mutters," You have two seconds to let go of me before I break your pretty little nose again Tony." It didn't stop her from pulling her arm back before he could let go and pull him to eye level by the ear. Once at level she began to pull him out of the pub and deposited him to the streets while she spoke," Don't come back tomorrow Tony... That's your last warning."
Both brows went upward as she handled the drunkard so effectively. He even grinned approvingly. "Well I'm sure that I can be a movie star, if I could get out of this place. Oh la la la di da da. La la di da da dum. Now Paul is a realistic novelist. Who never had time for a wife. And he's talkin to Davy who's still in the Navy and probably will be for life. And the waitress is practicing politics as the business man slowly gets stoned. yes they're sharing a drink they call loneliness. But it's better than drinkin' alone."
"Last call for booze, you have ten minutes to pay up your tabs boys!" Called out as she strode to the bar. At this point she did look a bit phased, aggravated, and irritated. The singer was given a smile, mostly saying,' sorry.' But never the less she moved for the drawer.
"Sing us a song you're the piano man. Sing us a song tonight. Well we're all in a mood for a melody, and you got us all feeling alright. It's a pretty good crowd for a Saturday and the manager gives me a smile. Cause he knows that it's me they've been comin to see to forget abour their life for a while. And the piano, it sounds like a carnival, and the microphone smell slike a beer. And they sit at the bar and put bread in my jar and say 'man what are you doin here?"
His fingers danced over the keys as that song began to build to its closing as he shook his head at her apology as if to say 'I don't mind.' while he gave her a teasing wink for the one earlier.
As tills were paid, she let him sing on. Most of the duties didn't keep her from closing on time. Big and small duties were handled in mere minutes while he sang and played. A few times he passed her, letting her scent tease him further innocently. Eventually there was no one but the two in the bar and with keys in hand she meandered towards him, listening to his tune calmly.
"Oh, la la la di da da. La la di da da da dum. Sing us a song, you're the piano man. Sing us a song tonight. Well we're all in the mood for a melody. And you got us all feeling all right..." He watched her approach but played on knowing that time was up for him to play on.
She'd let him finish his song first. With an arm resting on the piano she listened, both eyes closed slightly. A heavy yawn flowed from her lips and she shook her head from side to side," Time for me to close up Stranger. You sang beautifully."
A teasing hint at flushed cheeks to her compliment as he lifted his hands from the keys and ducked his head before standing up. "Good night, my angel. Time to close your eyes and save these questions for another day. And save these questions for anooother day. I think I know what you've been asking me. I think you know what I've been trying to say..." The words soft and gentle as he stretched and loosened up before coming around the piano.
"Goodnight, sweetheart, well, it's time to go.... Goodnight, sweetheart, well, it's time to go... I hate to leave you, but I really must say... Goodnight, sweetheart, goodnight..." Was sang as she started for the door, her keys spinning on her fingers.
"Ba do de oh do de oh do de oh do." His voice dropping to that impossible base as he walked behind her. Not complaining about that view but he wasn't piggish enough to try anything. Yet.
Both eyes turned back to smile to him," Well, it's three o'clock in the morning, so there you are you see. Baby, you just won't treat me right, well I have my reasons. I hate to leave you baby, and I swear I don't mean maby, You know I love you so..."
"Mother, and oh, your father, Won't like it if we stay out too late. Well I hate to leave you baby, don't mean maybe, you know I hate to go..." A soft smile at the lyrical banter as he moved around her to the door.
When he got to the door she grinned and kicked off the lights, opening the door for him as she sang," Goodnight, sweetheart, well, it's time to go.... Goodnight, sweetheart, well, it's time to go...."
"I hate to leave you, I really must say, so goodnight sweetheart goodnight night..." He backed out onto the street still watching her oh so carefully.
Slowly her back turned as he sang. Keys fiddled with the locks, her head lowered, and she sang with him," Goodnight, sweetheart, goodnight..."
"Goodnight sweetheart...goodnight." The sound gently fading as he moved further away. He'd come see her again, of that it was certain. Softly the words faded on the wind as he was gone.
"Somewhere out there... Beneath the pale moonlight... Someone's thinking of me... and loving me tonight..." When he vanished she frowned, she would have very much liked to share another due with him. Perhaps next time.
"Somewhere...out there. Someone's saying a prayer that we'll find one another..in that big somewhere..." The words themselves seemed to play on the wind as if in response to her wish. Mayhaps he was a wandering spirit?
A smile forms on her lips, both her arms folding behind her back as she moves towards the apartments in the east," And even though I know, how very far apart we are... It helps to think we might be wishing, on the same bright star!!" And sure enough, she turns her eyes towards the stars.
"And as the night wind starts to sing, a lonesome lullaby. It helps to think we're sleeping, underneath the same big sky." As she looked up there he was, high atop the buildings as though some guardian songbird watching her home safely.
She smiled at his appearance and bit her lip. Stopping she settled on a bench and folded her arms over her chest against the cold. She wasn't eager to be rid of his company," Somewhere out there, If love can see us through... Then we'll be together, somewhere out there, out where... dreams come truuuueeeee.."
