Daniel glanced out the Red Dragon Inn's window as Riley wrapped up her long and harrowing tale of her time with the Faeries. He was surprised to see that night had fallen while they talked; the story had been longer than he'd thought.

Riley gave him a grin that was two parts wry and one part rue. ?I've totally talked your head off all day. I'm sorry,? she said. She'd traded in her coffee for her usual scotch and water after the sun went down, and now she took a sip before nodding to him. ?Your turn.?

?Not at all,? Daniel replied. ?It was quite fascinating...in a macabre sort of way.? Hr blinked as the last thing she said penetrated. ?My what??

?I've talked your ear off and spilled my guts,? Riley explained. ?You need to return the favor...or something.? A corner of her mouth curled in a little lop-sided grin.

?Oh,? Daniel replied, tilting his head inquisitively. ?Well. What would you like to know, then?

Riley arched a sable brow at him. ?Uh...Seriously? After what you told me about yourself last night you have to ask what I want to hear about??

?I suppose not,? Daniel said, a little pointlessly, taking a sip of his tea before continuing. ?Well, I already told you that I was born in India. It was in a lovely place called the Valley of Flowers. It's a national park, actually.?

At that moment, Riley raised her head, clearly catching a familiar scent, and looked out of the booth to the crowd, which had grown considerably int he hours between the time they'd entered and now. She smiled and waved at someone Daniel didn't recognize, though his nose told him she was another Cat. Then Riley turned back to him and smiled. ?That sounds really pretty. Do you remember much?? Her attention was distracted once again, however, as she spied another friend and smiled at him.

?Not much from living there originally,? Daniel answered. ?As I said before, I was born a snow leopard, so I didn't really stop to enjoy the scenery. I could give you some lovely tips on hunting the wild goats there, though.?

?Wow,? said Riley. ?Okay. I can totally see how that would come in handy...if I were to ever go to India.? She gave a smile in response to some silent communication going on between her and the man at the bar. Daniel noted the by-play, but decided it wasn't his business to ask questions, so he continued with his story instead.

?However, I did return there a few years back, as a tourist. I can definitely say it was quite pretty.?

Riley returned her attention to Daniel, asking, ?So...How'd you get...you know...here??

Daniel flashed her a quick grin. ?Well, that could either be a fairly long story, or a rather terse one. Which would you prefer??

?Long? I've got time,? Riley replied, settling back against the booth, holding her body stiffly, unable to stop from wincing as a tortured muscle pulled the wrong way.

?In that case, I'll continue from being born.? Daniel winked, hoping to distract her from the aches and pains she was obviously feeling. ?I lived the first year and a half of my life purely as a cat. I didn't have any idea I was something more.?

?Do you remember anything from that time?? Riley asked, sipping her scotch. Her caramel-colored eyes were fixed on his own gray ones, flustering him a bit.

?Oh yes,? he replied. "It's left quite a mark on my life. I was essentially a teenager before I learned anything about human life, so I have an unfortunate tendency to forget things like speaking, or handshakes, when I'm distracted, or nervous.? Such as he was right now, being stared at by this amazingly attractive woman. ?Er. Yes, I remember quite a bit. Hunting, tracking, sleeping...um...? He trailed off as he realized he was probably sounding a bit idiotic.

Riley chuckled, clearly sensing the cause of his troubles, sipping her scotch before speaking. ?And then what??

?One day, I was hunting with my mother and got caught in an avalanche. It swept me away, carried me quite a distance down the mountainside, and over a middling cliff, where I was promptly buried in the snow.? He took another sip of tea, hoping it would calm him.

Riley blinked, surprised. ?Holy crap. Seriously? An avalanche??

?Yes, indeed. It was a frightening experience, as you can imagine. And it was made worse by what immediately followed. I managed to dig myself out of the snow before losing consciousness. When I woke up, everything was different. My fur was gone, my limbs were the wrong length and shape, I was freezing...and so on.? He closed his eyes for a moment, remembering the terror of that day. Fortunately, he was spared the embarrassment of Riley seeing his lapse, as her attention was thoroughly captured by the sight, of all things, of a tiny, speeding sports car being driven by what appeared to be an animate Barbie doll. The car raced across the floor by the bar, weaving in and out of stool legs before coming to a screeching halt under a cart.

Riley blinked, and blinked again. ?Is that...no way. It can't be.? Clearly, it was, however, and a moment later, when the doll stepped out of her impromptu garage, Riley called out, ?Work it girl!? In return, she got a blown kiss and a bright plastic smile. Riley giggled and shook her head, obviously wishing she'd had a doll like that when she was a girl. Finally, she turned her attention back to Daniel. ?Let me guess. You shifted, right??

?I did, indeed,? he replied. ?Only, having always lived as a cat, I wasn't able to reason out what had happened. All I knew was that I was freezing, I couldn't walk; because my legs were the wrong lengths, and I couldn't even call out for my mother because my mouth had changed.?

Riley nodded, finishing off her scotch and pushing aside the glass. She glanced out of the common room again, then back. ?Must have been horrible. How did you survive?"

?Sheer luck. I was spotted by a botanist from Oxford, visiting the national park with his wife. You can imagine his surprise when he hurried over to the fallen figure and found a naked teen-aged boy in the snow.?

?Wow. Lucky you,? Riley said. ?So, wait. What the hell was a botanist from England doing in India??

?Very lucky. They were all that kept me alive. Ah...he and his wife are both professors at Oxford University, and lived in England, but were of Indian heritage. They decided to go to India, visit the homeland and all that, for their 30th anniversary. Not to mention there was ample material to interest a botanist and a conservationist at the national park.?

Riley nodded, absorbing all of this. ?So, they took you back to England with them??

Daniel took a sip of his tea and nodded, continuing, ?Yes, after the authorities at the Indian hospital were unable to find any record of me in their system, Nigel and Margaret?which are their names, by the way?decided they didn't want to let me become just another ward of the state, especially after it was clear I couldn't even speak."

?That was really nice of them,? Riley replied, ?They sound like lovely people. How long did you stay in England??

?Oh, several years. It was there in England that I learned I was a shifter. After that initial shift, you see, I never went back to being a cat, apparently my body sort of 'forgot' about it amongst all the trauma.?

?Sure. It must have been terribly traumatic. How'd you learn to Shift back??

?Nigel took on the mentorship of a graduate student from Peru, named Braulio. Braulio was a jaguar, in fact, just like you. It was he who showed me how to change back and forth.?

?Huh.? She toyed with her glass, trying to decide if she wanted another drink. ?Seems like a whole string of coincidences. Kinda funny how life works out like that.? A ghost of pain slipped through the depths of her eyes and she shifted uncomfortably in her seat.

?It is,? Daniel replied, ?isn't it?? He reached over and patted her hand lightly, sympathizing with her pain without making a big deal of it. ?Braulio also showed me how a young man should act, got me interested in things like sports...and women, of course, though I figured that one out without much help. Braulio was a little stiff, himself.?

?Yeah, I'm pretty sure you didn't really need help when it came to the opposite sex,? Riley laughed.

Daniel flashed a quick grin, ?In the interests of humility, I should refrain from agreeing with you.?

She snorted and rolled her eyes. ?Puh-leeze. You're a Cat; humility is not in your nature.?

?You're right, of course,? he snickered softly. ? Anyway, after Braulio left, about a year later, I was much more comfortable with human life. I decided to try going to University, since my 'parents' were teachers, and he was a student, too. It didn't work out very well.?

?Too boring??

?Yes, exactly. I had just learned of this completely new and interesting world. Staying cooped up in classrooms did not appeal to me.?

Riley nodded. ?My best friend in college was the same way. She didn't want to be in school, but since no one else in her family ever got into college, she kinda felt like she had to go.? She fidgeted with her empty scotch glass again, then nodded at his teacup. ?Want some more??

?I think I would,? he replied. ?However, you should let me get it, and yours if you'd like some more. I know you're still hurting.?

Riley raised her brows and slid out of the booth, moving stiffly. ?I have to move around. Otherwise, you'll have to carry me home because I'll be so stiff, I won't be able to walk.? She gathered up the cup and glass and shuffled slowly across the room, her usual feline grace replaced by slow, deliberate steps, formulated so as not to hurt.

Carrying her might not be such a bad thing, he mused, but was careful to keep that thought to himself. ?You're right, of course.?

He watched the room while she was gone, trying to get himself accustomed to the wide variety of...beings...that seemed to inhabit this place. It wasn't particularly easy, but he would persevere.

He stood up when she returned, waiting until she'd seated herself again before sitting back down. ?Thank you for the tea.?

?No problem,? she replied, easing into her seat.

?So...where was I?? Daniel asked while fixing the tea and taking a sip. He nodded approvingly.

Riley took a healthy sip of the scotch and shrugged a bit; a move that was clearly a mistake, as it was immediately followed by a wince and deep frown. ?Pollywog had just left, or something like that.?

He blurted out a surprised laugh at her renaming of Braulio...a nickname that was sure to stick forever now. ?If I ever see him again, I'll be sure to call him that.?

She grinned, and he could tell that the expression had become rare in recent times. ?So, no school. No Pollywog. What'd you do?"

He returned the grin, encouraged by the seemingly lifted spirits she was showing. ?I wandered, mostly, all around the country, meeting new people and seeing new places. Just having fun with life, since I was still so new to it. Human life, I mean.?

She nodded. ?I always ask this, but after the Night of Revelation, did things change a lot for you??

He was faintly relieved she'd brought it up herself, as he'd been working up to mentioning it and wasn't entirely sure how she'd react. ?Oh, yes. Things were much easier for me. I didn't have to struggle to hide my feline side anymore, while trying to learn to act like a human.? He paused, then threw her a quick wink. ?The women loved it, too.?

She gave him another snort and shook her head. ?Yeah, I hear that.? She frowned and cocked her head to the side. ?I didn't mean for that to sound as...um...lesbian as it probably did.?

He laughed again, surprised twice in the space of a few minutes. It was good to see there was a sense of humor in there. ?It also gave me the opportunity to meet some more cats, though never another snow leopard.?

Riley took another sip of the scotch and tried to relax a bit more, leaning back in the booth, looking off at something else in the room while she listened to Daniel's story.

?After the Revelation,? he continued, ?I went back home for a bit, and told Nigel and Margaret what I was. They were surprised, but accepted it readily enough, being intelligent people. It certainly answered a lot of the questions they had about the circumstances surrounding finding me. Then, I went back to traveling, this time leaving the country and wandering around Europe for a while before heading over to the States.? He took a drink of his tea, a bit dry from all the talking.

?That's one place I've never been. Europe, I mean. The only place I've been overseas is Japan.?

?I've never been there, myself, though I hear there are some great parties.?

She chuckled ?I wouldn't know about that. We went to visit my grandparents and then to bury my grandfather. So...no parties.?

?Oh.? He looked down in chagrin. ?Er. I'm sorry to hear that. Hope I didn't offend.?

She shook her head and gave him a soft smile. ?No, you didn't. You couldn't have known...unless you were one of those creepy stalker guys who cut out every newspaper and magazine article ever written about me.?

?No, no, nothing like that,? He grinned disarmingly. ?Though, I did watch all of the programmes that featured interviews with you.?

Luckily, Riley was only half-listening to him at that point, her attention caught by a conversation someone else was having near the bar, and didn't seem to hear the last thing he'd said. This was a good thing, since he was feeling a little silly for saying it. Then she blinked and shook her head, focusing on Daniel once again. ?The more things change, the more they stay the same, eh? Sounds like the Bloods and the Cryps back home. Only, you know, with swords.? She sipped at her scotch again.

?Better that than guns, I suppose.? He finished off that cup of tea, and was happy to find enough water remained for another. ?So...I understand you're the owner of the building where you live??

She hid a yawn behind a slender hand. ?I should go. Home, I mean. Yeah, all three storeys of it. How come??

?Well, I, um...find myself without a place to stay here. Nothing wrong with this Inn, of course, but it's not the same, you know? I don't suppose you have any vacant spots?? He asked, a bit hesitantly, wondering if he was being too pushy.

She smiled. ?As it just so happens, there's exactly one loft left. Up on the third floor. There's two lions up there now. A Regina and a young one. And Mindy, too, I believe.?

He nodded, wondering what he could offer in return for the room. It wasn't as though he had a steady income...or any income, for that matter. Nor were the skills he possessed would be especially useful for barter, either. ?I...well...I don't really have anything to offer you at the moment. Perhaps you could, er, reserve renting it out for a bit while I try to find a source of income?? He said hopefully, not expecting much.

?Yeah, I could hold it for a while,? she replied, ?Honestly, I wasn't expecting the places to go this quickly. I just finished the remodel like a month ago and figured it would take a while for the place to rent out."

He smiled, relieved. ?I don't suppose you have any tips on where I could find a decent job?"

She smiled ruefully and shook her head, ?I had to start my own business just to get a steady income.? She narrowed her eyes thoughtfully, then, ?How do you feel about running a cafe??

?A...a cafe? I've worked in a few, odd jobs and the like. I am a pretty good cook, if I may say so. Had to learn, since I spent so much time on my own.? He was a little surprised by the turn of the conversation, but willing to run with anything that might help.

She nodded. ?Well, there's a cafe in the building in need of an owner-type. I haven't had any bites on it, so it's yours if you want it. Then you'd hopefully have a source of income and a place to live.?

?I'd be silly to turn that down. Consider it wanted.? He grinned happily. Things were looking up.

She mirrored his grin. ?Awesome! Well, hi, neighbor.?

?Lovely to meet you, neighbor,? He laughed quietly, then continued more seriously, ?You need to rest. Since we live in the same building now, might I escort you home again??

She nodded, ?You wanna couch surf again tonight? Since there's no furniture in your place??

?Couch surf? That's one I've not heard before, though the meaning is obvious. And yes, I would like to, again,? he replied.

Riley nodded and moved very slowly out of the booth, straightening by inches. She had a white-knuckled death-grip on the edge of the table, ?Shall we? This walking crap has got to go. I need a car.?

Daniel stood with her, and offered his arm if she wanted it. ?Yes, let's.?

She transferred that death grip from the table to his arm and hobbled on out. He offered as much support as she wanted...the weight was negligible, of course. ?You'll feel better soon," he said quietly as they walked out the door.

?From your lips to God's ears,? she whispered quietly.

They came strolling down the street, hand in hand, chatting quietly. The hunt last night had been rather...vigorous, and they were both feeling nicely relaxed, a nice change for Riley, if a common occurrence for himself. Riley was dressed casually in blue jeans, a black and azure springy shirt and black Chuck Taylors, her state of relaxation was further helped by back-to-back classes - yoga at dawn and then the advanced ballet class.

?This is the first time I've seen you truly relaxed.? He said quietly, as the Inn came into view. ?I like it.?

She gave him a wry chuckle and slipped up the porch stairs, resisting the urge to twirl around the post, like Gene Kelly. ?I would say that we need to do more hunting, but I'd worry about depleting natural resources.?

?Mm. Well, we'll just have to find some other activity to...relax you.? He said it with great solemnity, though the mischievous twinkle in his eye belied that seriousness.

Sadly, she just gave him a raised brow kind of look, not deigning to respond. ?Are we going in or what??

?Spoilsport,? He muttered, then continued in a normal voice, ?After you.? He opened the door with a grand gesture.

She grinned at his mutterings and then pulled open the door of the Inn, stepping inside and giving the place a quick once over. ?It's very odd to me that this place is practically empty during the day.?

He blinked when she yanked the door right out of his hand. ?Feeling your Wheaties today, hm??

She laughed I am. Though...,? She glanced at him from out of the corner of her eye.? I feel slightly bad about being so...vicious.

He glanced over at her as they made their way to the bar, wondering if she meant she felt bad about her actions, or the fact that he was there to see them. He hoped it wasn't the latter, but wasn't quite sure how to reassure her, if it was. He decided to take the middle path, instead. ?Sometimes, you have to let it out.?

She nodded and turned her glance now to the wall she'd attacked last night. It was, of course, perfectly healed now, thanks to the Inn's regeneration spells ?Maybe I should invest in a heavy bag with the same spells as the Inn has.? She moved through the break in the bar asking, ?What do you want?

?How about some masala tea? It's quite refreshing in the morning.? He replied as he leaned against the counter and watched her move.

She arched a brow. ?Yeah. You're gonna have to tell me how to make that. I could swing a cup of Earl Grey or even some green tea, but anything more involved than that's gonna require a little instruction.?

He grinned. ?Maybe I should give you some lessons. Earl Grey would be fine, though.?

?Cooking lessons might be kinda fun. ?She set water on to heat while considering her own drink. Too early for alcohol, she wasn't in the mood for tea or coffee...that left few options.

?Then it's settled. We'll start tonight.? He traced idle designs on the counter top with one finger as he spoke.

She nodded, still somewhat distracted by her perusal of the myriad drink choices.
Finally, she just shook her head and settled on a Coke. She turned back around and leaned against the counter, facing Daniel. ?I'd offer you yoga lessons in return but... You don't really need them.?

?I've seen your yoga outfit. That's enough incentive to take lessons, regardless of their necessity.? He flashed a quick grin at her.

The tea kettle was beginning its wind-up and she removed it from the heat. ?Don't think I didn't hear your comment, Pollyanna. I'm just choosing to ignore it.? She poured hot water into a cup and added a tea bag.

?Yes, I've noticed you're quite adept at selective deafness.? It was becoming rather fun to tease her.

She grinned and pushed his tea across the counter to him. ?Just like a kid, huh?? Then she popped open her Coke, poured it into a glass and added a couple of ice cubes.

?Thank you,? Daniel replied. He took a sip of the tea and nodded approvingly.

?Sure thing.?

He reached across the bar and ran his fingers lightly over her forearm. ?I got a bed this morning. I don't have to sleep on the floor anymore.?

Riley stepped out from behind the bar, relinquishing her impromptu tending job to Mr Self-Serve. Settling down next to Daniel, she crossed those impossibly long legs and took another sip of her Coke. ?Was that a proposition??

?Absolutely.? It hadn't been meant that way, but he was quite willing to run with it.

?Hmm. I'll think about it. See if I can pencil you in to my already busy social calendar.?

?Sarcasm. I'm wounded.? He contradicted his own words immediately, though, when he leaned his shoulder against hers and purred softly.

?Get used to it, toots. Not for nothing do they call me the Queen of Snark.? She rubbed her cheek against his head, a soft answering purr coming from her now.?

?It will be difficult, but I will harden my heart and go on? He grinned.

She turned to Daniel. ?So... A bed, huh? And chairs and the all-important mini-bar. You've got all the makings of a stylin' bachelor's pad.?

He looked up at her and nodded, ?Drinks and a place to drink them. Very important.?

?Now you just need the easy blond in the little black dress to complete the look.?

He reached up and ran his fingers slowly through her dark hair, replying quietly, ?Brunettes are more to my taste.?

?Why, Mr Tej, if I didn't know better, I'd say you were flirting with me.? She kept her tone light and teasing, though inside she was more than a little worried at this turn of events.

A serious expression crossed his face...for a change. ?Does that bother you??

She forced a reassuring smile, though she didn't feel it. ?Bother me? No. A handsome, available man flirting with me is hardly a bother.? She took another sip of her Coke, looking away from him.

She ought to have known better than to think a smile would fool the Cat's senses. Now, he was curious to know what was bothering her, but he had a feeling she wouldn't take it well if he pressed. ?Okay,? was all he said.

She glanced back to Daniel, and sighed softly. ?Wanna go sit by the fire?? She felt as though she owed him some sort of explanation.

He nodded and rose easily. ?Certainly. These stools are not the most comfortable of chairs.? She took her Coke and headed towards the hearth, dropping down into a chair and curling up, feline-like. He took the seat next to hers, turning it until it faced her more directly, resting his chin on his hands and waiting silently for her speak the thoughts that were clearly pressing on her mind. She gave him a side-long glance

?You're not gonna make this easy on me, are you??

?Do you honestly want me to?? He asked seriously.

She turned to face him fully and shrugged a little, ?Maybe a bit. ?She set the glass down on a near-by table and worried her lower lip for a moment. ? Most of this is going to be rehashing of what was printed in the papers after the Night of Revelations. I mean, my entire life story was in every gossip rag for like six months after we came out. So, I'm pretty sure you've heard it or read it all.?

He nodded.

?Well...,? she continued, ?You know about Andy, right? What happened to him??

?I do, yes.? He remembered the casual cruelty of the papers and their speculations.

Some mix between sadness and anger slid through her eyes and she worried her lower lip again, thinking where to go from here. ?I... I met someone, about a year ago.? She paused again, wondering how much of her disappearance was covered in the papers.

?I remember reading about you vanishing. There wasn't any mention of another, though.?

She shook her head, ?No, I worked really hard to keep him out of the press's attention. He was...,? She smiled softly, a little wistfully at the memories, ?He was a demon hunter.?

He raised a brow. ?And he wasn't trying to kill you??

She shook her head slowly. ?Nope. He was...trying to protect me.? She gave him a smirk, ?It's complicated and would make a killer book, but we...were going to get married and...I was pregnant.?

?What happened?? He wanted to say a lot more, but he was determined to let her do the talking.

?Someone decided that I was the cause for all of her suffering and...attacked me. I lost the baby.? She turned away from him, struggling to get the emotions under control before continuing the story, ?Rhys, the baby's father... He disappeared, too.?

?I'm sorry, Riley,? He said, touching her arm lightly, ?I can't even imagine.? She gave him a grateful smile and covered his hand with her own, clinging to it for a brief moment of weakness. ?Did you ever find him?? He asked.

She shook her head and folded her hands in her lap, ?He's still gone. I thought maybe...the Fae had him. All of this..., ?She waved a vague hand in the air, indicating the conversation they were having, ?Is my ham-handed attempt at explaining...stuff to you about me.?

He put his chin back on his hands and nodded. ?I'm listening.?

She laughed bitterly and shook her head:, ?Stuff that I wouldn't have realized about myself had it not been for Aolani's invasion and Eamon's abduction. So, I guess I should really thank them instead of actively trying to kill them, huh??

He snorted, ?From what you've told me, perhaps both.?

The corner of her mouth curled in a wry grin. ?Yeah. Maybe, ?She shifted in her seat, curling one leg underneath her and leaning into Daniel. ?I think...,? She licked her lips nervously, ?I think I need help. Professional help.? Admitting this was so hard; the Cat was used to being strong and soldiering through everything on her own. Weakness was not something to be owned or even talked about.

?Maybe you're right.? That was an area in which he had less than no experience. Spending the first half of his life as a wild animal made sure of that.

?Back home, people either treated being in therapy as a state secret or a badge of honor. You know, 'I'm crazier than you are'.?

He nodded, ?I've heard people talking about it, but honestly, I never understood.?

?Humans are complicated, ridiculous creatures. You were probably better off as a cat.?

?Maybe. There's no going back, though. I'd be lonely. I know too much, now.?

She nodded. ?Adam and Eve have a lot to answer for.?

?Tell me more. Maybe it'll help. ?He could hope.

She nodded, ?It seems like...,? She sighed softly, hearing the words in her head and knowing that they were ripe with self-pity, ?It seems like everyone I love dies. Horribly.?

?You don't know Rhys is dead.? Maybe it was reaching a bit, but worth pointing out.

Daniel's words brought a tiny smile to her lips, ?No, that's true. But the alternative isn't any better.?

?Maybe not. Still...it isn't really your fault. Bad things happen, sometimes to good people.?

?I mean, I suppose it's possible that he's somewhere, happy and with absolutely no memories of what happened, but... That's just too ridiculous to hope for.?

?You never know. It's a better thought than any alternative, isn't it??

She nodded, deciding to be magnanimous and not selfish about her erstwhile fianc?'s well-being, ?So... Uh... You should...ask Mindy out.?

?I should what?? He was totally nonplussed by that.

She nodded, pushing the idea now, ?She's cute. She's funny. She's into you.?

?You're not serious.? He said, trying to regain his mental balance. Not that he was repulsed by the idea or anything like that; Mindy was a lovely woman, and incredibly sweet. He just...had his sights set on Riley.

Daniel Tej

Date: 2010-04-02 22:40 EST
She frowned a little, seeing definite merit in her idea. ?Of course, I'm serious. You're not a species-ist, are you??

?Um. Er. Well...,? He was tongue-tied. The words, they did not work. He stood, suddenly, and paced around their chairs.

She chuckled at Daniel's reaction and sipped her Coke, watching him pacing. ?Oh, come on. It's a good idea. Don't act like it's not.?

He blinked at her, wondering if she was really that clueless. He couldn't say a thing, though. He growled softly, frustrated with his inability.

?Oh, I get it. You're shy. I could ask her for you, ?She said helpfully.?

He couldn't even tell if she was being serious or silly at this point. Finally, he manages to untangle his tongue a bit, though the words are more growl than speech,
I have to go.? And he practically ran for the door. Outside, he took deep breaths of the warm air and closed his eyes. His reaction to them was almost as surprising as her words. He paced back and forth on the porch, growling softly, trying to get his thoughts...and tongue...under control. He could smell when she stepped over the threshold and onto the porch, but didn't react in any way. The Cat wasn't capable of talking yet. She moved to the side of the door and leaned against the wall, arms crossing loosely over her stomach as she watched him pace.

?You...uh...okay? ?She asked softly.

He turned to face her and shrugged, forcing the word out, ?Fine.?

?Liar,? she said bluntly.

He growled and turned away, knowing full well she could smell his emotions more clearly than he could speak them.

?C'mon, Daniel. Don't be like that.?

He shook his head, took a deep breath, and forced his tongue to work, ?I'm sorry.?

?For...?? They'd just covered a lot of ground and in pouring out her tale of woe, she'd created a bunch of opportunities for apologies.

?For running out. For pushing you towards something you don't seem to want.? He shook his head again. ?Clearly, I misunderstood.?

?Misunder...,? She stared at him for a moment, disbelieving, ?Jesus, Daniel! I don't want...? I'm not dead, for god's sake.?

He stared back at her. ?I've been doing everything I could possibly think of to interest you...and you tell me to ask Mindy out. How else should I take that?

She groaned in frustration, ?You don't want to interest me. Trust me on this. I'm...f*cked up. Badly. People I fall for die. Hell, even people who are just good, close friends die.?

He threw up his hands in frustration. ?You're scared of getting close, but what good does it do anyone if you just close yourself off??

?What good does it do? It keeps people safe, Daniel. It keeps people alive. Isn't that good??

?Alive is one thing. Living is better.?

She gave him the look reserved for people who are being obtuse.

?Bah,? He growled and turned away again, looking off the porch and out at the city. He gripped the railing tightly, perilously close to cracking it.

She sighed and pushed off the wall, moving over to the railing and standing next to him, but not too close. She could feel the frustration boiling off him. She wanted to make it better for him, she wanted to explain everything, she wanted to throw herself at him and kiss him... She just stood quietly at his side, though, watching the traffic in the street beyond the Inn. After a moment, she said quietly, ?I warned you, you know.?

He snorted, calming down some. ?I don't listen very well when it comes to warnings.?

?Clearly. ?She reached out, hooking her pinkie with his, ?Nonetheless... I wasn't completely kidding when I warned you that I was trouble.?

He looked down at their hands, and sighed softly, ?I like trouble. How do you think I got here??

?How did you get here, anyway?? She asked, relived to have found a safe topic.

?I told a witch I didn't believe she was one, he replied, breathing normally now, back under control.

She chuckled at the coincidence. ?Yeah, that's how I ended up here, too. Sorta.?

He looked at her out of the corner of his eye, then leaned in suddenly and kissed her, just the barest touch of lips before pulling back and looking away. ?I'm hungry.? It was a non-sequitur, but, oh well.

She was, in turns, startled and pleased by the quicksilver kiss. After wiping the sh*t-eating grin from her face, she nodded her agreement with his non-sequitur. ?Me, too. I'm in the mood for grilled-cheese-and-tomato sammies.?

?Let's go eat, then. I promise not to drop dead.? Clearly, he was feeling better about it, enough to make jokes.

?Gee. Thanks.? Her delivery was spot-on deadpan. Their pinkies still entwined, she tugged him gently in the direction of the WestEnd.

He let himself be tugged, even smiled a bit. ?I'm honored.?

?Wait until you taste it. You might not feel so honored after.? Hopping down the stairs - with a slight wince as she hit the cobblestones - her steps turned in a westerly sort of direction. ?Oh, hey. If you were to see a piano coming your way from say...the second floor? You could totally jump out of the way, right? Theoretically speaking.?

He didn't know what the hell she was talking about, but it was better than the previous conversation, ?Absolutely. I'm very fast.?

She nodded thoughtfully, ?Good to know.?

He glanced up...possibly for wayward pianos...as they walked off.

He stalked down the street, no doubt looking every bit as frustrated as he felt. Pausing outside the Inn, he wondered if it was even worth going inside. It certainly hadn't been very enjoyable earlier...except perhaps for the last few minutes. He stared at the wooden doors for another moment or two, then shrugged. What the hell. He opened the door and took a breath, testing the air for any dangers, then slipped inside and headed over to the bar. He smelled tea, and noted that someone had been kind enough to leave the water on. Slipping behind the bar, he dropped a packet of spices into a cup and poured hot water in. A moment later, the deliciously spicy scent of chai wafted out from the cup. He added some milk, then took the cup and made for the hearth.

"Oh, that smells nice," Aliss said as the man carried his cup over to the hearth. "What is it?"

He looked over at the girl and smiled, pleasantly enough, though his heart wasn't really in it. ?It's called chai. It comes from India, on Earth. ::He'd learned to add the planet of origin to his explanations. So many people from other worlds in this place.?

"Earth?" Her face lit up and she dropped the book into her lap, immediately forgotten. "Is India anywhere near Scotland?"

He shook his head. ?Not very near, no.?

Her face fell and she sat back, somewhat disappointed in his answer. She lifted her tea to her lips and took a tentative sip of it before smiling once more. "I'm Aliss Cameron," she offered.

She looked so disappointed, he couldn't help but take pity. ?However, I lived for quite a long time in England, which is rather close to Scotland.? He held out his hand. ?My name's Daniel.?

She hesitated briefly before shaking his hand, her own encased in thin leather. "I've heard of England. It's full of..." she frowned briefly, trying to recall what Auld Malcolm had had to say on the subject. "Scally wags, thiefs and criminals, right?"

He burst into laughter at the description of England. ?I imagine some would say so.? He said when he got himself back under control.

She frowned, a little confused at his reaction. "Is that not right?" A light crimson stain had crept into her cheeks and she worried her bottom lip between her teeth, worried she'd made some sort of faux pas.

?Well...not exactly. I don't know from whom you heard that, but it seems as though it was someone who disliked the country.? He sipped the chai and heaved a quiet sigh. It always relaxed him. ?It's really not so bad as all that.?

She nodded, "It's true. Auld Malcolm apparently did not have a lot of love for England. Or the English, come to think of it."

?Many Scots don't...and it's hard to fault them for it.?

She smiled. "I guess I can skip the next question that I normally ask people when I first meet them, since you've already told me where you're from."

?That's true.?

She sipped her tea quietly, studying Daniel for a moment. "You must be new. I've never seen you here before."

He nodded, gray eyes meeting her blues, ?I've only been here a few weeks.?

"Do you like it?"

He paused for a moment, thinking about Riley, then replied, ?Yes. I do.?

She grinned, "Good, I'm glad. Some people are really turned off by this place. Some people are really scared by what they find here." She shrugged, "I was born here, lived here my whole life. I think it's...interesting."

Mindy walked in, giving a wiggle of fingers, greeting the boy next door as she slipped behind the bar to rummage for the perfect drink to suit the mood.

?Well, ?Daniel said, ?I won't deny that it was a bit...odd...at first. ?He chuckled, ?But, there are many good things, too.? He turned, offering a smile and wave to Mindy when she walked past.

Aliss followed his gaze and smiled a little, leaning forward and whispering in a teasing tone, "Is that one of them?"

He nodded seriously, ?My neighbor. She's extremely nice.?

Finally deciding on a fancy shmancy bottle of apple juice from the cooler, Mindy turned to grin toward Danny boy and Aliss. ?It's the southern hospitality,? she said, ?Can't take the south outta a girl even if you move her a million miles away.?

Aliss nodded and sat back, finishing off her tea. She turned her unprepossessing smile Mindy and said cheerfully, "I'm Aliss." She didn't, however, offer her gloved hand for shaking.

Daniel looked at Aliss, ?She's from Earth, too...although I don't think it's the same place I came from...alternate dimensions or something. I don't pretend to understand how this place works.?

Over Mindy goes to plop down on the floor beside the hearth. ?Nice ta meet you Aliss. Name's Mindy.?

Big, blue eyes blinked slowly and she looked back and forth between them. "Different Earths? You mean...there's more than one Earth?" She seemed truly shocked by this news. Different Earths meant different Scotlands... "Oh, wow," she whispered softly.

Daniel nodded, ?So I gather. It's very strange.?

?Yeah, don't think about that one too hard. I had a headache for a week tryin to figure it out,? replied Mindy.

She nodded slowly, seeing how the subject could very easily cause head-aches. "So, you two live next door to each other then?"

?That's right,? Daniel said, as he finished off his chai and set the empty cup on the table.

?It's part of my evil plot to make him just down right sick of my company,? Mindy said, hiding a smirk behind her bottle, ?We share a wall at work too.?

Aliss smiled. "What kind of work?"

?I own a book store and Gallery called Tranquility, Said Mindy.

"Oh? I think I've heard of that place. It's in the WestEnd, right?" The tone of her voice indicated just exactly what she thought of the WestEnd - scary, dangerous, full of killers, rapists and gang members.

Mindy nodded. ?In the Zen Gardens building, Daniel owns the cafe next door.?

"Cafe? What kind of food do you serve?"

Daniel smiled, ?Indian food.?

?Which reminds me,? Mindy said, ?the ladies at the book club loved the lunch, even if they couldn't pronounce the names of the dishes. I apologize in advance for the flood of middle aged matrons who will soon be descending on you most likely with their marriageable daughters.

Daniel looked over at Mindy and raised a brow, truly hoping she was kidding...that was all he needed. ?I...well, I'm glad they liked it.?

She was, mostly, ?They asked if you had takeout menus, and if you did delivery.?

"Oh, right. Since you're from India, that makes sense." Aliss giggled at Mindy's statement. "Oh, I hope my sister-in-law never finds out that you're employed and single. She'll be inviting you over to our house for dinner and trying to put us together." She shook her head at how silly Gemma was being. "Just because she's happily married and now pregnant doesn't mean that everyone else has to be, too."

?I think our landlady would eat her if she tried,? Mindy said, nodding.

?I hadn't really thought about it, ?Daniel mused, ?Though there's no reason not to do take-away. I'd have to hire someone for deliveries, though,? He forced a chuckle at Aliss's words, not wanting to upset her. After this afternoon, though, the idea of any more matchmaking was enough to make him cringe.

"Eat her?" Aliss echoed. Considering the vast number of beings in the city, the threat wasn't too far fetched. "Well, lucky for her, she's got her heart set on one of our hands for me. Poor man." She clucked her tongue and shook her head.

?I'm hiring someone to do deliveries for the gallery, we could probably share,? said Mindy. Daniel nodded distractedly, thinking.

?And what do you do for a livin', Aliss?? Mindy asked.

"I breed horses and hunting dogs."

?Yeah? What kind of dogs??

This afternoon's conversation was weighing heavily on Daniel...which reminded him. He sighed and looked over a Mindy, not wanting to speak, but knowing he had to. ?Er...Mindy??

?Mm??

Aliss opened her mouth to respond to Mindy's question about her dogs, but fell silent as she sensed a mood change. She sat back against her chair and folded her gloved hands in her lap, letting them talk and trying to to eavesdrop.

?Um,? Daniel paused, thankful his skin was too dark to show a blush, ? This afternoon...Riley and I had, well, a rather heated discussion, and...er...in the course of it, your name was sort of...brought up. I just wanted you to know that...nothing we said was meant badly at all. I'm sure you'll hear about it from some gossip, and I didn't want that to be the first you heard of it.?

Mindy quirked a brow, ?Right.. what context??

Daniel turned away and shifted uncomfortably in his seat, ?I...she, um, made a suggestion, and I'm afraid I reacted badly,? He said over his shoulder, clearly not thrilled with speaking.? He curled up in the chair, trying to disappear into it or something.

Aliss arched an eyebrow, desperately wanting to know what they were talking about, but deciding that it wasn't really any of her business. She didn't even know this Riley person after all.

?Sugar,? Mindy replied, ?You'll offend me more by not fessin' up than you ever could otherwise.? She set down the empty juice bottle and gave him a somehow soothing look, ?Besides now you've got me curious.?

"Excuse me," Aliss murmured quietly and rose, taking her empty tea cup to the bar and giving them real quiet and solitude.

?I...erm...oh, hell,? Daniel said coherently. ?You've probably figured out that I've been developing some feelings towards Riley,? He said reluctantly.

?That's about as plain as daylight in the summer,? was Mindy's reply.

?Then you've probably also seen that when I get...flirty...she tends to back off.?

?Yep. Seems to be her way.?

?Yes...well. She explained some of why she's that way to me this afternoon, when I asked if my flirting bothered her,? He was less uncomfortable explaining this part, though he wasn't looking forward to what was coming up.

She gave a little nod, encouraging him to continue.

?She told me how people she gets involved with seem to end up dead. Then she...,? he broke off and looked away, blushing again, even if it couldn't be seen.

?Did she tell you to go flirt with me instead?? Seemed a logical leap to her.

He blinked, surprised, then nodded slowly, and whispered, ?Yes..exactly that.?

She gave a little snort of laughter, ?And that's what has you all a-fluster? Sugar, you'll have a hard time with that skittish kitten. I don't envy you.?

He shook his head slowly, ?I'm afraid I treated her suggestion like a joke.? He was a little calmer now, having made the confession. ?I...fear that I might have made it sound as though I was repulsed by the suggestion,? He finished that last sentence all in one rushed exhalation. Frankly, he was a bit surprised at his continuing ability to speak...usually when he was this bothered, the Cat literally had his tongue.

She waved it off, ?Hardly somethin' I'd be angry about.?

He blinked. ?You...wouldn't??

?Growin' up with brothers, I learned early, men say stupid things to pretty girls they want, especially about other pretty girls.?

He was somewhat off-put by her reaction. Other women he'd known would've bitten his head off for what he'd said...some of them quite literally.

?And you've never treated me to my face like a hideous beasty,? she continued, ?so I'm more apt ta believe action and consider you a friend than anything.?

?That's because you're not,? he replied vehemently, ?You're a lovely woman. I truly didn't mean it like I said it.? He paused, the last part of what she said catching up to his running mouth and cutting him off. ?Thank you, ?He smiled hesitantly.

She reached over and patted him on the arm in a friendly fashion, ?That's that then.?

He purred softly, mostly due to sheer relief, and nodded.

?And if she suggests it again, point out to her I already have one lover who gives me enough headaches for six women.?

?I shall, indeed,? He chuckled quietly.

?You remind me of my youngest brother in some ways, Daniel. Mostly the good ones. The things that make me actually miss the bugger.?

?I'm flattered,? He glanced at his empty cup and stood asking, ?Would you like something to drink??

?Another apple juice if you can find one??

?I'll give it my best effort.? He wove his way through the room; much more crowded now than when he'd arrived, and up to the bar. He searched around for some apple juice while the water for his chai heated, finally finding some and pouring a glass. He quickly prepared the chai, then carried both back to the hearth. ?Here you are,? He said, handing Mindy the juice.

?Thanks.?

?My pleasure.?

?Riley reminds me of our old barn cat sometimes. After she got bit by one of the wildcats that lived in the woods behind our place, she was scared to go outside alone. Yeowled and Yeowled if a tom came in the yard too.?

?That may be one of the most apt descriptions of her I've heard. And, unfortunately, I'm certainly a tom.? He sighed softly.

?Daddy refused to get her fixed, said a barn cat's job was ta have kits to help her mouse. After I found her up a tree for the fifth time, I talked him inta lettin' me keep her in the house.?

?And was she happier there??

?Much. Then once she got cozy, I brought home a young tom from the shelter. A house cat. Took about a month for them to stop circling each other. But by the time I left home for school, she the tom and their kits were mousin' their hearts out in the barn like nothin' had ever happened.?

?Hmm. I gather, then, that you're counseling patience??

?Yep. But don't you ever tell her I compared her to a barn cat. She'd likely up my rent.?

He nodded, then laughed, ?Have no fear.?

?And if patience doesn't work, you come see me and we'll make a plan B.?

He nodded, ?I'll do that. Though I must confess, patience is not a cat's strongest virtue.?

?I think she's worth it though. He'll I'd go for if I thought I had half a shot.?

?You may have a better shot than I...you'll be the one rolling around with her in Jello and bikinis,? He snickered.

?Trust me that is not in the least romantic. And don't get me started on how unsanitary it is.?

?Perhaps she'll need help getting it off,? he mused quietly, grinning, ?You know how cats wash, after all.?

?You should be so lucky,? she snickered, ?Somehow I think I'd have a better shot requesting a hot steamy shower scene.? She gave him a teasing wink then falsettoed, "'Oh Riley, Let me help you wash that out of your hair, It's ghastly hard on your own.'"

He burst out into laughter, shaking his head, ?That's the description of most men's fantasies, you realize??

?Uh huh. Brothers, remember. Stupid ones who didn't know how to hide their porn properly.?

?I can hardly imagine.?

?I did all the laundry from the time I was seven. I lost count of how many girly mags I found in laundry hampers.?

?What did you do with them?? He was very curious.

?At first I stashed them in the attic, but when I hit about thirteen I started pullin' them apart and gluin' them to the front fence. The bus stop for the boy's high school was right outside our gate.?

He laughed, ?That must've gone over well.?

?Frank wanted to date Jenny Bascom the preachers daughter, but after that her father locked her in the house till her 20th birthday.?

?Did your brothers realize you had done it??

?Of course. My backside was black and blue for a month after they complained to Daddy. Daddy didn't think girls should be makin' mischief.?

?Ouch.?

She nodded, ?Frank never got his date with Jenny, but she ran into Pete my youngest brother at college. They've got two kids now.?

?A happy ending??

?For Pete. Frank still grumbles about it at family picnics. He's also still single as is his twin Hank.?

?For every winner, there must be a loser, it's true,? He thought about Riley again...he planned to be a winner in that one.

?Jenny's a doll. And the their girls are a pair of little princesses. I wish it was easier to get back and forth from here.?

?It seems that some people have found ways to do it easily. I overheard some conversation about that earlier today...before things got a bit crazy between Riley and I.?

She nodded, ?It's travelin' around when I get to the other side that makes things pricey. Met a girl who's got friends who have some sort of gate that opens out in New Orleans. But thats a long way from Peach Grove Alabama when you've gotten used to paying for everything in local silver. Not exactly a direct exchange rate.?

?I suppose it would be hard.?

?They mail packages for me though, and receive letters. I get one once a month or so.?

?Well, that's good, then. He paused, then, ?I doubt my family has any idea where I am.?

?You miss them??

He started to nod...then shake his head...then just gave up and shrugged. ?I don't know. Honestly, I suppose not. There's so much to see here. They're wonderful people, but...,? he shrugged again.

?That's how I felt for most of my first year here.?

?It may change for me, too, after more time has passed. Or...it may not. I wandered for several years before ending up here, and never felt much urge to return.?

?Someone once told me that Home isn't a place it's a state of mind and Family is just a tool to shape the heart in to a vessel for a journey.?

?That's rather poetic.?

?It was one of the old guys from the rare book reading room. Wise guys in the best sense of the word. You know this has been kind of nice. I don't recall the last time I got to sit and have a chat with a handsome man without someone glaring daggers at me.?

He nodded in agreement, flashing a quick grin at the 'handsome man' comment, ?It has been nice. I enjoyed it. Well...most of it. My "true confessions" moment was not exactly a high point.?

Daniel Tej

Date: 2010-04-03 17:08 EST
?Why were you so shocked that I wasn't angry??

?Well, all of the other women I've known would have been. Some would have objected in a rather physical fashion.?

?See I don't get that. You were just trying to get in good with the girl you like, so I don't see a reason to be offended.?

?That makes you a minority, believe me.?

?Again,? She grinned, ?I'm gettin' used to that.?

He laughed, recalling the conversation about humans.

?I'm looking forward to the Hanami party, even went out and bought a kimono from the artist who has been showing at the gallery lately.?

He blinked, struck by the realization that he still had nothing resembling formal clothes. ?Oh, hell. I have no idea what one should wear to such a party.?

?Something comfortable but nice. Or I can introduce you to that artist if you like, or just have her send something over for you.?

?I may take you up on that offer. My arrival here was rather unexpected. I didn't exactly bring a wardrobe. Not that I had one to begin with.? His wandering was the epitome of traveling light.

?I'll get you the addresses of a couple of the mens wear shops that my friends shop at too.?

He smiled. ?Thank you again, Mindy. You're great.?

?I was trying to get a transfer from the library to the visitors center just before I got laid off, so I'm a font of local trivia.?

?Believe me, your local lore has been more than helpful,? He gave her a wide grin.

?And will continue to be I'm sure. It's a good hobby at least, gathering knowledge.?

?Indeed, it is.?

She finished off her juice and asked, ?What do you plan to do with the rest of your evening??

?Well, not much. I'm hoping Riley will show up sometime soon, so I can continue to work on her.? He grinned faintly.

She smiled a little, ?Good luck storming the castle then. I have a feeling I'll be watching late night reruns again.?

?Why is that??

?Because it beats playing the third wheel, or speculating what my lover's doing with who.?

He looked over at Mindy, ?I...am sorry,? He remembered her mentioning the lover that gave her headaches, but hadn't realized why.

?Not your fault. :: gives a rueful grin:: It wasn't so bad when I didn't have any time, but now I spend way too much time alone.

?Why not find someone else? You're a lovely, sweet woman. Surely it wouldn't be difficult to catch someone's attention.?

?I'm sure eventually I will. But I'm a lazy creature and manhunting takes effort.?

He chuckled softly, ?I think you'd be surprised at how little effort it would take you.?

?Cast a net and take the first male who's dumb enough to fall into it??

?Well..perhaps not the first. You might have to throw him back.?

?Actually, I want the one who takes one look at the net, points at me and laughs, then goes about explaining how to properly set up the net.?

?Ah, I see,? he nodded, ?Well, there you go...it shouldn't take much effort to set up the net and wait for someone to point out you're doing it wrong.?

She snickered, ?Now I just gotta buy a net.?

He laughed, ?Women come equipped with nets naturally.?

?Really now??

He blinked. She had to be kidding.

Tomboy to the core in many ways, and sheltered to boot. And there might be a bit of teasing there as well, a testing of his reactions so to speak.

He shook his head, ?An inviting smile is enough net for many, and that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to women's nets.?

?I'm just gonna point out that just smiling has never actually worked for me.?

?Truly? It even works for me, sometimes, and I'm not a woman.?

She nodded, ?But then I haven't actually dated much.?

Daniel Tej

Date: 2010-04-03 17:10 EST
?Maybe you should try.?

?Again. I'm lazy. :: she smiled:: And I haven't seen that many unattached males around here that I find appealing. Or females either for that matter.?

?Hmm,? He was at a loss for a useful reply.

She snickered and waved a hand at him, ?Don't let me bring your mood down. I'm actually alright being mostly alone.?

?I've heard a lot of women say the same.?

?They probably meant it at the time, but it's ninety percent bravado. Otherwise I wouldn't have settled for what I do have.?

He nodded, thinking. Then his head rose as the Jaguar's scent hit him. She smelled...sheepish, oddly enough. Maybe he was getting through, after all. His eyes turned to follow her movement, almost without volition.

She chuckled softly at his wandering eyes, and slipped out of her seat to head to the bar for more juice.

Riley had no idea why she was bothering to hide from him. It wasn't as though he couldn't smell her, probably could even smell her exactly feelings right now. Sighing and straightening, she attempted a normal walk for the rest of her trek to the bar.

He watched her every move, thinking, pondering, weighing. What would be the best way to act toward her?

?Evening Riley,? Mindy said, offering a friendly smile to her landlady and friend, ?Need a drink while I'm getting things??

?Uh...,? said Riley. This was a good start. Mindy didn't seem hell bent on her destruction. She risked a smile, ?Do you know how to mix a black and tan? Which I think is now called a Mahogany and Oak.?

?I think I can manage, ?She gave her a wink, ?Go ask Daniel if he wants anything while I mix that up.?

Her eyes narrowed dangerously at that. She snuck a look over her shoulder at the Leopard and then back at Mindy, ?He looks fine to me.? Yes, double entendre included.

?Yes, yes. But ask him anyway. Just to be polite, Kitten.?

Finally, Daniel decided that the best thing to do would be to play it cool, and try not to push her at all. He nodded to himself. He would do his best to friendly without being flirty.

Mindy gave Riley a "do what Mama says" look as she started mixing her drink.

Riley stuck her tongue out at Mindy and sulked across the room in the general direction of the hearth.

He stood up as Riley approached, offering her a friendly...and only friendly...smile.

She arrived at the hearth and stood awkwardly nearish Daniel, ?Uh... Mindy wanted to know if you want something. From the bar,? She hastened to add this last bit, an arch of a sable brow thrown in for good measure.

His hand twitched, badly wanting to reach out and touch her, but he resisted, ? Some tea would be lovely, thanks. From the bar,? Okay, he couldn't resist that last bit.

Her eyes narrowed dangerously and she spun on her heel, headed back to the bar and muttering about conspiracies. She practically barked Daniel's order at Mindy, ?He wants tea.?

?Does he care what kind of tea or should I be randomly picking one??

He sat down, his smile fading away. Even playing it reserved hadn't seemed to help. He sighed softly, gray eyes focusing on the fire.

Mindy handed Riley her drink, ?You should go ask because I'd hate to give him the wrong flavor.?
Riley's mouth thinned into a tight line at the prospect of having to go back and ask him another question. She sighed and made up his mind for him, ?He wants Earl Grey.?

?Right. Earl Grey.? She wrinkled her nose but went to prepare the tea anyway, ?I'd have picked something more exotic I think.?

Mindy slipped out from behind the bar to take Daniel the tea, asking ?Am I going to have to go back and forth between you two all night to have one conversation with you both or are one of you going to move??

He spoke quietly, without taking his eyes from the fire, ?I don't think she wants me nearby, Mindy.?

?Sugar, that's not the vibe I've been getting from her all week,? she kept her voice low, ?I think she'd actually have been quite put out if you had actually expressed an interest in me.?

Riley sat down hard on a chair next to Daniel, beer in hand, muttering, ?F*cking city's bat-sh*t insane.?

He made a non-committal noise, watching Riley out of the corner of his eye. Had he cat ears, they would have been fixed on her, though.

She took a healthy pull from the glass clutched in her hand.

Mindy sighed a little and curled herself back into her seat. ?It would be dull if it weren't utterly mad here. I might as well have stayed in Peach grove.?

He tilted his head a little, so one eye was aimed at Riley, wondering if he should say something, though he wasn't sure what he could say that wouldn't set her off. Again.

?I think I could actually stand a little boring every once in a while, you know?? Riley said.

?I think the only way that's going to happen is if you never leave the Zen building in the mornings,? replied Mindy.

?Or at least my own loft. Goodness only knows what the rest of you get up to.? She sighed deeply and curled up in her chair, the beer still clutched in her hand. ?I'm sorry.? The words were soft enough that probably only Daniel would hear them. Which was good, since the apology was aimed at him.

Finally, he turned his head the rest of the way, to look fully at her. His answering whisper teetered on the edge of inaudibility, even for someone with ears as keen as hers. ?Me too.?

"I should've brought you a file in a cake," Daniel said, laughing. "It would've been faster." They were strolling up the street, finally out of the Watchhouse, after about seven-and-a-half hours...though it felt like seven-and-a-half years.

"I still cannot believe the size of that drow's cojones!? Riley exclaimed, ?Arresting me like that and for something utterly ridiculous. I think I'm gonna open the first inter-dimension ACLU office for just such a reason!"

"I'll run a 'Lawyers Eat Free' special if you do," he chuckled.

She laughed at that. "I can't decide whether to be flattered or insulted by the whole affair. The legal system in this place is positively medieval. If I didn't think I'd be laughed off the ticket, I'd run for governor on a legal reform platform and overhaul the entire system, bottom up." She slipped her hand in his and tugged him gently towards the Inn. "I am in desperate need of a drink."

He squeezed her hand lightly and nodded. "I'd vote for you...and a drink sounds great." He let himself be tugged toward the Inn.

She snorted at Daniel's words. "You'd vote for me because if I found out you didn't, I'd raise your rent. On both places." She gave him a cocky little grin and mounted the stairs in one leap.

He gasped in mock horror. "Of course not. It's your sweet and bubbly personality that would sway my vote. By the by, you look really good in that dress," he said, "I don't see you in colors like that often." He hopped up the steps and slipped ahead of her to swing open the door.

She paused for a moment, inhaling the myriad scents that rushed out as the Leopard opened the door. A soft growl issued forth from between clenched teeth. "They're in there," she says quietly, her good humor nearly sapped.

"Just ignore it, Riley," he said, almost pleadingly. "We don't want...or need...another fight. It's not worth your time."

She nodded, her teeth still clenched tightly as she stepped over the threshold, spine stiff, shoulders thrown back, the very epitome of grace, style and cold, calm disinterest. Caramel gaze swept the crowd, spotted John, Harris, and the Secret Society of Super Villains. She ignored them all and headed straight for the bar.

To the bar he went. "What would you like to drink tonight?" He asked her.

She pursed her lips thoughtfully and finally shrugged. "I dunno. Surprise me. My only stipulation is that it have a lot of alcohol in it."

He raised a brow, then set about fixing her one of the very few alcoholic drinks he knew. Vodka, Grand Marnier, sugar, fresh squeezed lemon juice. He shook it all up, ran the lemon over the lip of a martini glass, dipped it in sugar, and poured. "Here you go, a lemon drop martini," he said, handing it to her.

"Ooh. I love these!" A slender, long-fingered hand curled around the stem of the glass and she took an experimental sip of it. "Yum. It's lovely. Thank you."

"Glad to hear it, since I hardly know any others," he replied. Then he made himself some tea...anti-climactic after that drink.

Riley turned to Daniel, pasting on a forced, though somewhat happy smile. "So."

?So? Is it my turn to get arrested?? he asked.

She laughed. "Yes. Let's see," she said thoughtfully, tapping a nail against her teeth, "what ridiculous, trumped up charges can we manufacture for you?"

He tilted his head in mock concentration. "Hmm. I know. Prostitution."

She blinked. "Soliciting or..uh...offering?"

"Which would you prefer?" He flashed a quick grin.

"I'm gonna go with neither." She flashed him a grin and sipped her martini, sensitive Cat ears zeroing in on quite a few conversations tonight.

He shrugged, nodded. "Just as well. I've certainly never seen the need to pay for it...and getting paid would just be greedy."

She sighed softly, a tingling sensation right betwixt her shoulder blades, almost as if someone had painted a target on her back. She suddenly did not like where they were sitting. She had her back to the room at large and though she could see most people in the mirror that hung over the bar, she still didn't like the positioning. "Wanna move somewhere?"

He caught the sudden scent of her discomfort, and quickly divined the reason for it. "Yes, these stools are no more comfortable now than list night. Where to?"

"Booth? Hearth? I'm easy." She forced a little grin. Focus on the present, focus on the present, Little Kitten.

"Hardly," he replied dryly. We spend all of our time at the hearth. Let's take a booth for a change." So saying, he took her hand and headed for one.

She curled her fingers through the Leopard's hand and followed him to the booth, her other hand still curled around the martini glass. It was just too yummy to let out of her sight. He ushered her into the booth, waiting until she was seated before settling down across from her. He sipped his tea and sat quietly, waiting. She blew out a deep breath, feeling more relaxed now that she didn't feel she had a big target on her back. Caramel gaze flicked once more to the Super Secret Society and her eyes narrow slightly as she studies the others they are with. One of them looks familiar. She leans forward, towards Daniel. "Isn't that the guy from the other night?"

He glanced sidelong at the crowd, and nodded, replying quietly, "Yes. The one you gave advice to. Clearly, he did not listen." He was gratified to see her discomfort ease as soon as they were settled into the booth.

She gave a tiny shrug. "Or maybe he did and he's now acting on it." She quietly hoped it was the case. She studied the Phantom for a moment, full lower lip caught between perfect, white teeth.

"Perhaps." He followed her gaze, briefly, then returned his attention to her face...a definite step up.

She shook her head sadly, her voice soft. "How sad." Then she visibly brightened and looked back at Daniel. "I have an odd question for you."

He raised a brow curiously. "Oh?"

"Are you Hindu?"

That was about as far from anything he might possibly have guessed she would ask as was possible, and he blinked in surprise for a moment before answering, "No...not as such. I...well, my parents were, at one time, but they sort of lost it when they became more interested in science. I didn't get much religion in my, er, humanization. Frankly, I never quite grasped the point of it."

She nodded slowly and took another sip of her martini. "I only ask because there's a big Buddhist holiday coming up on Thursday and I thought maybe you'd like to observe it with me?"

"I'd love to," he replied. "I don't know a lot about it, but I'd certainly like to learn. And...well," he smiled a bit hesitantly, then continued more softly, hoping she'd take it well, "Any excuse to spend time with you."

She gave him a soft smile, though inwardly she was cringing. She licked her lips and tried for casual, reminding herself of the importance of the upcoming holiday. "Good. It's the Buddha's birthday. It's kinda our birthday, too, in a way."

"How so?" he asked, forcing himself not to sigh as he smelled the sudden change, her withdrawal.

"Are you familiar with Mahayana Buddhism?"

"Not in the slightest."

She chuckled. "I can explain at a later time, if you want. But some Mahayana Buddhists celebrate our birthdays on the Buddha's because we're celebrating the the immutable and eternal nature of all beings."

He just had to ask. "What does the Buddha think about lycanthropes?"

She grinned. "I don't think He'd care one way or another. It's what people do and think that matters. Not what they are."

Riley growled suddenly, in response to something she overheard from the Seirene. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes, centering herself after the little flare of anger.

He reached across the booth and took her hand, running his fingers across her palm gently, whispering. "It's okay."

Her eyes still closed, she was counting breaths. She nodded at Daniel's words and then slowly opened her eyes again, meeting his cool grey gaze. "It's not okay. But you know what?"

"What?"

"Karma's a bitch." She finished the drink. "I just feel badly for the innocents who are caught up in it. Their suffering is needless."

"And yourself?" He's unusually serious, again.

"My suffering?" She shrugged. "I tend to believe I have a lot to make up for. I was..." There was no other word for it. "Dumb." She idly traced a finger around the base of the empty martini glass. "Like I said. Karma's a bitch."

"So...make a mistake and suffer for years because of it? Maybe I spoke too soon about getting behind that sort of thinking," he said slowly. He tapped his fingers lightly on the table, looking pensive...not a common expression for this Cat.

"It's not just one mistake, Daniel. It's years and years and years of mistakes. Of knowing that there was a better way, a more rational way and ignoring it. Of knowing that my actions, and worse yet, my inactions, were hurting people."

He sighed, unable to offer anything useful in response. This sort of self-recrimination was very nearly beyond the Cat's understanding. Instead, he looked away, eyes roaming over the other patrons.

She, too, fell silent, joining him in his gaze over the sparsely populated room. She felt as though she'd let him down somehow. She seemed to be doing that a lot lately. She popped up out of her seat suddenly, long-legged strides taking her towards the bar, carrying her empty martini glass. She slipped through the break in the counter and busied herself for a moment with washing the glass, drying it meticulously and putting it away.

His head turned to watch her go, but he didn't move otherwise. Talking to her was like some complicated dance...forwards and backwards, forwards and backwards...but never really making any progress. It was enough to drive a Cat mad.

Finished with the glass, she turned around and braced her arms against the counter. She watched Neo now, listening intently to his words. She had her own opinions about what gave them the right, but no one has asked her and no one is likely to ask her. She recrossed the room and slid back into the booth, silent as a stalking cat.

He watched her return in the same way she'd left, but still didn't speak. He couldn't think of anything to say.

She found herself nodding with Neo's next words, agreeing completely. She bit her lower lip in an effort to keep the words forming in her mind from spilling forth. She gripped the edge of the table in an effort to keep from going and standing next to Neo.

Daniel turned and watched as the drama grew and unfolded.

"I have to get out of here," she said softly and slipped out of the booth, not waiting to see if Daniel is following her or not. She headed with alacrity to the door and pushed out into the dark safety of the porch.

He sat silently, wondering if it would be better to go to her or leave her alone. She's always telling him to leave...could it be that she really meant it, despite the conflicting message he constantly got from his senses? "Damn and blast," he whispered to himself, rising and heading for the door. He just wasn't ready to give up yet. Out onto the porch, he stood in the cool night air, enjoying the feel of it against his heated skin. He didn't precisely look at Riley, but every bit of his attention was on her, nonetheless...and doubtless she could feel that.

She was powerfully aware of Daniel's presence and she spoke quietly from her corner, "You probably think I'm ridiculous."

He responded, just as quietly, "I think you're fascinating, beautiful, amazing...and yes, ridiculous. And I hardly know what to make of it."

"You know what the worst part of my imprisonment was?"

"What?"

"The time alone. The time alone when I had nothing and no one but ghosts of the past and my own ouroboros of thoughts."

"Then why, for all that's sane, do you want so badly to still be alone?" His voice was louder and more intense than usual, as if he was trying to will an answer that made sense from her.

"Because I'm scared," her voice was soft, perhaps too soft for even his sensitive ears to pick up.

At a normal time, it would have been. He was so focused on her, though, that he heard it as loudly as though she'd shouted it. "Let me help to be less scared, then," he said, much more quietly than his previous words. "You don't have to go it alone."

"Pippa's dead. My grandfather's dead. John is dead. Rhys is dead. Peanut..." her voice broke, the Litany of the Dead bringing tears to her eyes. "I don't want you dead, too."

He tried, desperately, to inject a little humor into the situation, "I already promised to dodge falling pianos, remember?"

She gave him a tiny, grateful grin, just a flash of white teeth shining in the darkness. "But what about falling safes?"

"Even easier...they're smaller," He said with all the lightness he could muster, "Besides...didn't Buddha say to live in the moment or something?" He did go to University...for a bit...after all.

She gave him a pained look as he threw her philosophical views back in her face. "Yes, He did say that. And it's only one of many tenets that I'm struggling with."

"If there's anything a Cat can understand, it's that point. No one knows what the future holds, and if we spend all our time wondering and worrying about it, our lives will be wasted."

She nodded slowly, though it was doubtful he could see it. She rose fluidly, coming to her feet and moving around the swing that was between them. She moved right up to him, so close that not even a sheet of paper could slide freely between their bodies. She raises her hands to cup his face gently and kisses him, sweet, long and lingering.

Surprise would be too mild a word for what he felt at that moment, but he rallied magnificently, gripping her waist firmly and returning the kiss hungrily. Something in between a growl and purr vibrated from his chest, reverberating between them.

Her hands slipped through his hair, holding his head tightly and firmly against hers. She let the kiss go on for a moment and then broke it, taking a step back and putting the tips of her fingers against her bruised mouth. She stared at him, her eyes wide and filled with a little bit of shock.

His mouth worked silently for a few seconds, then he whispered, "See? Spontaneity is so much better." His whole body shivered once, and he put a steadying hand on the railing.

She chuckled at his reaction. "Clearly." She reached out and trailed a single finger up his arm, starting from his hand and moving all the way up to his shoulder. "Maybe..." Her voice was breathy. She paused and swallowed, and then licked her lips. "Maybe we should go home?"

He caught her hand in his own, rubbing his cheek against it, then kissed her knuckles lightly. "Only if you promise that kiss wasn't a one-time deal."

She shook her head. "I don't do that any more."

"Then let's go," he said, tugging her toward the steps.
