Daniel glanced out the Red Dragon Inn's window as Riley wrapped up her long and harrowing tale of her time with the Faeries. He was surprised to see that night had fallen while they talked; the story had been longer than he'd thought.
Riley gave him a grin that was two parts wry and one part rue. ?I've totally talked your head off all day. I'm sorry,? she said. She'd traded in her coffee for her usual scotch and water after the sun went down, and now she took a sip before nodding to him. ?Your turn.?
?Not at all,? Daniel replied. ?It was quite fascinating...in a macabre sort of way.? Hr blinked as the last thing she said penetrated. ?My what??
?I've talked your ear off and spilled my guts,? Riley explained. ?You need to return the favor...or something.? A corner of her mouth curled in a little lop-sided grin.
?Oh,? Daniel replied, tilting his head inquisitively. ?Well. What would you like to know, then?
Riley arched a sable brow at him. ?Uh...Seriously? After what you told me about yourself last night you have to ask what I want to hear about??
?I suppose not,? Daniel said, a little pointlessly, taking a sip of his tea before continuing. ?Well, I already told you that I was born in India. It was in a lovely place called the Valley of Flowers. It's a national park, actually.?
At that moment, Riley raised her head, clearly catching a familiar scent, and looked out of the booth to the crowd, which had grown considerably int he hours between the time they'd entered and now. She smiled and waved at someone Daniel didn't recognize, though his nose told him she was another Cat. Then Riley turned back to him and smiled. ?That sounds really pretty. Do you remember much?? Her attention was distracted once again, however, as she spied another friend and smiled at him.
?Not much from living there originally,? Daniel answered. ?As I said before, I was born a snow leopard, so I didn't really stop to enjoy the scenery. I could give you some lovely tips on hunting the wild goats there, though.?
?Wow,? said Riley. ?Okay. I can totally see how that would come in handy...if I were to ever go to India.? She gave a smile in response to some silent communication going on between her and the man at the bar. Daniel noted the by-play, but decided it wasn't his business to ask questions, so he continued with his story instead.
?However, I did return there a few years back, as a tourist. I can definitely say it was quite pretty.?
Riley returned her attention to Daniel, asking, ?So...How'd you get...you know...here??
Daniel flashed her a quick grin. ?Well, that could either be a fairly long story, or a rather terse one. Which would you prefer??
?Long? I've got time,? Riley replied, settling back against the booth, holding her body stiffly, unable to stop from wincing as a tortured muscle pulled the wrong way.
?In that case, I'll continue from being born.? Daniel winked, hoping to distract her from the aches and pains she was obviously feeling. ?I lived the first year and a half of my life purely as a cat. I didn't have any idea I was something more.?
?Do you remember anything from that time?? Riley asked, sipping her scotch. Her caramel-colored eyes were fixed on his own gray ones, flustering him a bit.
?Oh yes,? he replied. "It's left quite a mark on my life. I was essentially a teenager before I learned anything about human life, so I have an unfortunate tendency to forget things like speaking, or handshakes, when I'm distracted, or nervous.? Such as he was right now, being stared at by this amazingly attractive woman. ?Er. Yes, I remember quite a bit. Hunting, tracking, sleeping...um...? He trailed off as he realized he was probably sounding a bit idiotic.
Riley chuckled, clearly sensing the cause of his troubles, sipping her scotch before speaking. ?And then what??
?One day, I was hunting with my mother and got caught in an avalanche. It swept me away, carried me quite a distance down the mountainside, and over a middling cliff, where I was promptly buried in the snow.? He took another sip of tea, hoping it would calm him.
Riley blinked, surprised. ?Holy crap. Seriously? An avalanche??
?Yes, indeed. It was a frightening experience, as you can imagine. And it was made worse by what immediately followed. I managed to dig myself out of the snow before losing consciousness. When I woke up, everything was different. My fur was gone, my limbs were the wrong length and shape, I was freezing...and so on.? He closed his eyes for a moment, remembering the terror of that day. Fortunately, he was spared the embarrassment of Riley seeing his lapse, as her attention was thoroughly captured by the sight, of all things, of a tiny, speeding sports car being driven by what appeared to be an animate Barbie doll. The car raced across the floor by the bar, weaving in and out of stool legs before coming to a screeching halt under a cart.
Riley blinked, and blinked again. ?Is that...no way. It can't be.? Clearly, it was, however, and a moment later, when the doll stepped out of her impromptu garage, Riley called out, ?Work it girl!? In return, she got a blown kiss and a bright plastic smile. Riley giggled and shook her head, obviously wishing she'd had a doll like that when she was a girl. Finally, she turned her attention back to Daniel. ?Let me guess. You shifted, right??
?I did, indeed,? he replied. ?Only, having always lived as a cat, I wasn't able to reason out what had happened. All I knew was that I was freezing, I couldn't walk; because my legs were the wrong lengths, and I couldn't even call out for my mother because my mouth had changed.?
Riley nodded, finishing off her scotch and pushing aside the glass. She glanced out of the common room again, then back. ?Must have been horrible. How did you survive?"
?Sheer luck. I was spotted by a botanist from Oxford, visiting the national park with his wife. You can imagine his surprise when he hurried over to the fallen figure and found a naked teen-aged boy in the snow.?
?Wow. Lucky you,? Riley said. ?So, wait. What the hell was a botanist from England doing in India??
?Very lucky. They were all that kept me alive. Ah...he and his wife are both professors at Oxford University, and lived in England, but were of Indian heritage. They decided to go to India, visit the homeland and all that, for their 30th anniversary. Not to mention there was ample material to interest a botanist and a conservationist at the national park.?
Riley nodded, absorbing all of this. ?So, they took you back to England with them??
Daniel took a sip of his tea and nodded, continuing, ?Yes, after the authorities at the Indian hospital were unable to find any record of me in their system, Nigel and Margaret?which are their names, by the way?decided they didn't want to let me become just another ward of the state, especially after it was clear I couldn't even speak."
?That was really nice of them,? Riley replied, ?They sound like lovely people. How long did you stay in England??
?Oh, several years. It was there in England that I learned I was a shifter. After that initial shift, you see, I never went back to being a cat, apparently my body sort of 'forgot' about it amongst all the trauma.?
?Sure. It must have been terribly traumatic. How'd you learn to Shift back??
?Nigel took on the mentorship of a graduate student from Peru, named Braulio. Braulio was a jaguar, in fact, just like you. It was he who showed me how to change back and forth.?
?Huh.? She toyed with her glass, trying to decide if she wanted another drink. ?Seems like a whole string of coincidences. Kinda funny how life works out like that.? A ghost of pain slipped through the depths of her eyes and she shifted uncomfortably in her seat.
?It is,? Daniel replied, ?isn't it?? He reached over and patted her hand lightly, sympathizing with her pain without making a big deal of it. ?Braulio also showed me how a young man should act, got me interested in things like sports...and women, of course, though I figured that one out without much help. Braulio was a little stiff, himself.?
?Yeah, I'm pretty sure you didn't really need help when it came to the opposite sex,? Riley laughed.
Daniel flashed a quick grin, ?In the interests of humility, I should refrain from agreeing with you.?
She snorted and rolled her eyes. ?Puh-leeze. You're a Cat; humility is not in your nature.?
?You're right, of course,? he snickered softly. ? Anyway, after Braulio left, about a year later, I was much more comfortable with human life. I decided to try going to University, since my 'parents' were teachers, and he was a student, too. It didn't work out very well.?
?Too boring??
?Yes, exactly. I had just learned of this completely new and interesting world. Staying cooped up in classrooms did not appeal to me.?
Riley nodded. ?My best friend in college was the same way. She didn't want to be in school, but since no one else in her family ever got into college, she kinda felt like she had to go.? She fidgeted with her empty scotch glass again, then nodded at his teacup. ?Want some more??
?I think I would,? he replied. ?However, you should let me get it, and yours if you'd like some more. I know you're still hurting.?
Daniel glanced out the Red Dragon Inn's window as Riley wrapped up her long and harrowing tale of her time with the Faeries. He was surprised to see that night had fallen while they talked; the story had been longer than he'd thought.
