Summer Daniels

Living life as a southern bell wasn?t anything that was in her future, despite the admittedly perfect name of Summer Rose Daniels. Her mother despaired at having brought up a girl that wore combat boots with dresses and knew more about the workings of a computer than a stove.

The computer?s output was being sent via a direct cortical implant that then sent signals to display the information in a way that was very much like having a floating screen a foot in front of her face. It was one of the ?improvements? she?d acquired since arriving in Rhy?din nearly four years ago.

The thought of her mother having a ?spell? and fainting clear away if she found out about her lifestyle now was a concern. It wasn?t that she was a rebel trying to get back at her parents, they?d been good parents, still were in their own way but they wouldn?t understand. Truth be told very few people would understand her choices.

There was more than a few women in her hometown that thought she should find herself a man and settle down to start building the ranks of the Daniels clan. It wasn't a lack of suitors, although she didn't attract as many as most of her cousins, but a lack of desire. She was too young to even start thinking of settling down, and the thought of having kids was so far off her scan that she wasn't sure they'd ever enter the picture.

Two other men were being fed instructions as she sorted through the maze of security to gain entrance to the system and disable the outer perimeter measures. The timing was important as she needed to punch through as close to when the men were approaching any given obstacle as possible. The system was advanced and she only had seconds to get in, disable the security and move again before it reacted. If her program was caught then it was all over.

At the age of seventeen she had managed to create programs that stealthed their way into high security computer systems and grab information. It was a matter of pride that drove her to do such things and curiosity when it came to hacking into the systems of private individuals of interest.

The seedy secrets that people with means possessed never ceased to amuse Summer. It was if they believed all that money could guarantee privacy. The fact that they could fall beneath her subtle ministrations amused Summer in the same way some of her cousins got satisfaction out of sacking a man in a football game.

This was a special program that she?d been working on for nearly six months and this was it?s maiden run. So far it was performing as expected but she wanted it to excel and she was pushing hard. The two men were approaching the inner sanctum and closing in on the goal when she sensed something wasn?t quite right.

Steering the program was a lot like the old Tron movie, she loved that film and that was reflected in the programs she wrote. The end game of it was that in her mind she took a hard right in her blue glowing motorcycle and avoided the waiting jaws of a trap by a hair. They weren?t real jaws, no more than she was really riding the motorcycle but because she was hooked in via the cortical implant real damage could be done to her neural pathways... that was part of the thrill. The jaws morphed into an angular monstrosity with four arms that ended in wicked looking hooks and began to give chase.

The two men were waiting nearby for her to drop the last of the defenses, drawing a gun from a holster at her side she aimed over her shoulder, hoping that no obstacles popped up in front of her while she wasn?t looking. Her lips moved as she mouthed the words ?use the force? and shot. The beam struck a panel where the monster had been a moment ago and a door swung open.

She fired a shot at the beast to keep it focused on her while the men ducked into the inner sanctum and got the information they were after.

There weren?t all that many billionaires in the world so when she found one that had next to nothing written on them she had gone to extraordinary lengths to dig up everything she could, break into their most private files and learn everything she could... with copies sent off to a secure location of course. The stuff she dug up on the man was so fantastical she thought that she might have found a fictional story that the man was writing in his spare time. It wasn't written like a story but rather like some elaborate delusion, an absolutely fascinating one at that.

It took her another three minutes to lose the beast and that was only after she opted to use brute force. Punching a hole through the ?floor? and dropping out of the subsystem. By the time she was unplugged from her laptop and grabbing her helmet she heard the sounds of men coming toward her position. They were faster than she expected but not fast enough. She was on her bike and speeding down the real streets of Rhy?din before the men had a chance to even get a good look at the girl that broke into their ?invincible? system.

At seventeen she thought herself pretty damn keen and invincible. It was a good thing that the man that caught her sneaking was also a man that recognized a talent that he could put to good use and opted to give her a job rather than a quick trip to deadsville. At the time, she hadn?t thought being dragged to a place as foreign to Georgia as Rhy?din was peachy but it had turned out to be the best thing that could have happened to her.

Not only was she given a ton of cash to do with what she wanted, she had access to technologies from other places that was far more advanced than anything she could get her hands on at home. It was a paradise just one short trip away from Georgia and she could indulge in her first love, the gathering of information, while getting paid good money.

The one thing she hadn?t really taken into her calculations was how much she missed the sense of family. The Daniels were a close clan and not having any of them to confide in had taken its toll. When she ran into Colt, nearly literally, was when the full force of that came crashing in on her but now she wasn?t alone here but had quite the number of Daniels to call upon. Well when it rained it poured Daniels and God help any caught in the Southern downpour.

?God dun made tah platypus to remind us that He works in mysterious ways.? The fact that she was hanging by her wrists, bound by leather straps didn?t seem to register in her tone. It was as if she was lecturing small kids that just got a bad bruising from falling out of a tree. ?In fact, ya might jes say that platypus was a-supposed to be a bit of a warning. Looks like a crazy duck otter until you get it mad, then BLAMM-O, poison spike to the face.? Her chin lifted and the smile on her lips was one that put to mind staring at the face of someone completely, and utterly insane, but insane in the way where intelligence backed it up to make the person truly dangerous.

?She?s been talking like this since we brought her in?? The man that was speaking was tall, slender, and pale. Impeccably dressed in a hand tailored suit he appeared to be a man of means. He was a man of means but it was more his employer that was the cause of the suit, he didn?t accept the slovenly around him.

?Brought her in? was his way of summarizing how four men, the size of wrestlers that had mutated to make even those professionals in the sport green with envy had broken into her apartment in Thomaston, Georgia, tossed her over a shoulder like a bag of potatoes, complete with a sack to cover her head. Hauled her around for a good few hours before shackling her up in this empty warehouse.

?Yes Mr. White. Even when I showed her my fangs. She was...? There was a long pause as he considered how to express how the woman had thrown back her head and howled with laughter at his threats. ?Unimpressed.?

Indeed, her head was thrown back again and that laughter rang out, filling the empty warehouse with the sound. ?Mr. White. I dun stepped into the Usual Suspects movie. Y?all are about as scary as a new born calf with a limp.?

It had taken Summer a bit to hash out which of the systems she?d recently cracked to be the cause of her abduction. There was a suspicion that it was the odd files she?d swiped from that mysterious billionaire that spoke about fantastical places and monsters. It seemed outlandish in the extreme, there wasn?t anything in those files worth a damn as far as Summer could tell.

The second fellow?s mug could be found in the dictionary next to the word ?thug? with broad shoulders and towering well over six feet tall. His hair was short and dark but his flesh was pale and every time he spoke a pearly set of fangs were visible. His whole face twitched when she spoke, for the past five hours she?d been slinging insults at him in a manner that was beginning to worm its way into his mind and stinging at this point. ?Mr. White, can I please teach her some manners, least let me gag her. Please.?

?Please Mr. White, can I have some more? Poor orphan Annie, should be dying his hair orange maybe some bald man?ll come ?long to adopt him.? There was a part of Summers brain that was telling her she should shut up, sadly that part was never loud enough to be heard over the insistent part that she was a God-damned Daniels and this treatment was unacceptable.

The second man slammed his fist against a button on a nearby panel and with a soft whirring sound the chains holding the straps tightened and yanked Summer up off the ground a good three feet. This earned a howl of a different sort as her arms felt like they might get torn from their sockets.

?Hard to believe this is the creature that managed to bypass a million dollar security system. You are positive you grabbed the right girl?? The man they were calling Mr.White moved forward to get a better look at the waif of a human that had caused so much havoc for him in the past week.

?Creature? Did you just call me a creature? Oh. Hell. No.? They hadn?t thought to do anything with her feet and up until then she hadn?t given them reason to realize the oversight. The boots she wore were a brand called ?New Rock? they were kind enough to plate the heavy duty boots with metal both on toe and heel. One was now brought up in a vicious kick, connecting solidly with Mr. White?s temple and splitting the skin open while sending him back a staggering step.

Now Summer was a pragmatic girl at heart, she didn?t truck with many superstitions, other than her weekly jaunt to Church but she had long suspected that was out of habit and a desire to give her mama one less thing to worry over. Mr. White flew up to grab her chin in a grip so hard she thought it was likely that he?d break her jaw.

The other guy had flashed fangs at her, that was true enough, but she?d thought them a really good pair of falsies. When Mr. White snapped his teeth in front of her nose there was no doubt allowed in her brain for such delusions. There was a time and a place for all things and Summer decided that was a good time to scream. She did so then her brain got the reigns back over her instincts and her mouth clamped shut.

Crimson eyes stared at her from an inch away, he was still just floating three feet off the ground like someone had pulled a ladder up for him, but Summer knew that hadn?t happened. There was a staring match for what felt like an eternity to Summer; pain was leaking her stubbornness away, her arms really felt like they were about to give way to gravity and she?d have sworn she could hear her jaw creaking under the pressure. ?Give you one thin?, you sure are light on yer feet, Mr.White.? The words were eeked out through clenched teeth.

Blood rushed around and thrummed in a near deafening manner in her ears but she managed to keep her stare hard and unwavering for another minute and something changed in the cold, creepy face of Mr.White. She?d have sworn that he smiled before there was a blur of motion and she felt, rather than saw, the chains holding her break. An arm wrapped around her waist hard enough to expel the breath she was about to use to scream again and then she was on the floor, Mr.White releasing her slowly to sit there while he stood and looked down at her.

?Clean her up. Stick her in one of the apartments on the West Side. Talent like yours shouldn?t be wasted, Ms. Daniels. Do not think to run, I am a predator and you smell a lot like prey.? He kneeled down so he could look directly in her eyes. His own were now flooding with a bright blue color, chasing the crimson away like the sun chases the night at dawn. The cut she?d opened on his forehead had healed already, only some lingering blood told the tale of her kick. ?The boss will like you but make no mistake, if you think to cross us it will go poorly for you. Stay in the apartment until I come for you. Understand??

She was about to make a smartass remark when there was a flash of crimson in his eyes that discouraged that path of action. There was a shake of her head, it was as much as he was going to get right then and he seemed to know it.

?Good enough for now. We will need to come to a truce at some point Ms. Daniels. I will forgive you today but not for long.? That was all he had to say to her before he was gone leaving Summer to stare at the air that recently held the man.

?Looks like we dun have a date ugly. Show me ta my palace.?

It was the start of a long, and difficult relationship, the South meeting Rhydin.

The first few weeks in Rhydin had been full of wonders and what Summer would later refer to as ?moments.? They didn?t allow her to go outside for the first week, insisting that she digest some general information on the area before she encountered the inhabitants.

Mr.White, whom she later found out was really called Jacks, visited her daily and spoke with her on a variety of topics. Those were frustrating for both parties involved, he was trying to impress upon her the dangers she might face in town and she, just as stubbornly, trying to impress him with her lack of concern. OK, so the first time he had flashed fang at her and floated on air had given her a bit of a shock, but now she knew what to expect and he wouldn?t be hearing another girly screech coming from her mouth.

At the end of one such session she had gotten under his skin well enough that he grabbed her up and tossed her across the room, shouting incoherently. This resulted in Summer launching herself at him, a knife in hand and then sunken into the flesh of his shoulder. The soon all too familiar ?OH. HELL.NO.? exclamation echoing throughout the house. They?d both learned a lesson that day, that he needed to work on his patience and that she needed to remember that mere metal just pissed Jacks off.

They worked on etiquette, things like:

*It is inappropriate to try and hog-tie a dragon.
*Driving a motorcycle around a minotaur waving a red flag shouting ?OLE Doggie!? is not funny.
*Offering a vampire a nice, cool glass of Iced tea made with holy water, also, not funny.

Things started going better when they gave her some work to do. They started with easy things, testing her skills on things that weren?t too important. That earned them a headache as she decided to find things for herself that were fun to do. Despite cracking into some accounts they didn?t want her to have information on they relented when they realized she?d gotten them information that was extremely useful.

By the third week she felt settled in and was asking for a pass to travel back home. ?I dun have to give my family an accountin? of where I have been.? When she said that Jacks looked about ready to chain her down again but she continued. ?I dun have a good cover story ready. I ain?t no fool, Mr. Jacks. I ain?t gonna be tellin? my mama I?m hangin? about with vampires and such. I am gonna tell ?em I got me a job in D.C. and need to camp out there.?
Jacks paused mid stride toward her and relaxed. ?That should work. How long will you be gone??

?Well first ya gots to show me how to get home. If you will recall you brought me here with a bag over my head.? Her hands were planted on her hips, she was not about to allow that particular detail to be forgotten anytime soon.

He didn?t take the bait but replied in that smooth, calm fashion that drove her to want to do something really crazy. ?I will have Bruno take you tomorrow. He will travel with you.?

?OH.HELL.NO. How do you suppose I can ?plain away a big lug trailin? ?long behind me like some lost yankee?? Leaning forward now as her voice rose to a screechy pitch.

?You like to say that often, Miss Daniels. You will figure something out, I have faith in your skills.? He smiled, showing off his fangs and she decided that this was a fight she wouldn?t win and backed off. ?Fine but if my mama gets suspicious ya?ll are gonna have yourselves a right invasion of Daniels, and trust me, that ain?t something you?d like.?
