It was early in to autumn, which meant the days still felt like mid-July but the nights began to feel more like October. At least it felt that way to Jenai. She?d gotten used to the weather of the valley with its unobstructed breeze and late rising - early setting sun. Here in the Marketplace, she was just thankful Brian had chosen a place where she and the girls could escape to the roof top patio garden.
This early evening would be one of those cooler nights that herald the season change. She paced the window of Dominick?s room slowly, his tiny body cradled in her arms as he fed and started slowly drifting into his own dream land. She wondered what on earth he could be dreaming about as she saw a tiny silly smile on his sleepy face. Her smile would not be seen by his closed eyes, yet it was there anyway. She stole a glance out of his window to the deck on the next floor.
The fading remnant of afternoon light was just perfect for the girls to play. Though she doubted it seemed less like play and more serious business to them by the looks of some kind of map they were making with a rather large sheet of paper and a ton of crayons. The looks on their faces and the way their mouths moved, the pointing on fingers on paper, the strong nods of little red heads? yes. It was very serious business indeed!
She loved days like this when everything seems normal, completely, one hundred percent normal. Thinking of that, she turned her head to look at a little clock given as a baby shower gift and saw normality? Brian was running a little late for dinner. That?d mean she?d have to start it. She felt Dominick was truly a sleep and gingerly placed him in his crib. Bottle and monitor in hand, she tiptoed out of the room and headed down stairs towards the family kitchen.
She wasn?t surprised when she turn into the kitchen from the stairs and saw Gria picking at bits of bread she?d brought over at Jen?s request. She?d invited her and Storm over to go over a few things after dinner. Gria had escorted the girls? home from school so Jen had invited her to stay for dinner.
?Looks like you are braver than I gave you credit for.? Jenai informed Gria as she walked past her to the kitchen door that lead to the small deck she saw earlier. She opened the door and poked her head outside looking for the twins. ?Time to come in side, dinner will be soon.?
?What do you mean? Braver?? Jenai met Gria?s quizzical face. The sun bleached blonde watched her as she chewed on the bread and talked around the mouthful.
?Brian is late, so I?m cooking.?
?You, cook?? Gria nearly choked trying to swallow the bread as she spoke.
?Yes, you know I can cook. A little and nothing fancy. I had to learn, remember?? Jenai wrapped an apron around her waist. Just as she did she heard the kitchen door open and the girls rambunctiously move through and to another room.
?Hi Gria!? the girls exclaimed in unison as they hustled through with the giant rolled up map just to vanish into the next room.
?Evening, girls.? Gria doubted they heard her, but whatever, she was more concerned with dinner being edible and prayed the Lord Ravenlock would be home soon to spare them all.
