Gaerwyn Caisson

Gaerwyn stood with Rhys at a desk in the warehouse office looking over the books. ?Solid start, sir, can?t complain, I should think. Good man you brought on, too. Works hard.? Rhys did not mince words with Gaerwyn in any matter.

"Works too hard?" Gaerwyn asked. He was worried over the man. Sylvia had spoken that Hudson had lost his wife to illness. She had also given some hint to Hudson's lengthy hours. Gaerwyn could sympathize having lost his wife to a tragic fire. He knew the desire to sink into work and keep sorrow a distant island unvisited. Gaerwyn had his children to consider and tend, but this man had his work and strange world to keep him away from grieving as needed.

"Maybe, but are ya going to complain about it?" Rhys grumped.

?Not yet. Well, yes, things look well,? Gaerwyn nodded and when he looked over the warehouse, its workers, and the arrangement of stock, he could not help but agree that all was going as well as he could hope for the start of the new trade.

It was his second day to stop by, and he did not stay long. It was not his manner or way to watch like a seahawk over people who were doing their work well. With a nod to Rhys, a departing hail to Hudson at the far end of the building, Gaerwyn went on his way to the Marketplace where he was to meet Lenika and the children. They were doing a bit of shopping, including whatever it was they were going to take to Ewan and Storm?s home for luncheon.

An unruly swirl of feelings twisted his insides like a tempest at sea: nervousness unlike he?s felt in years, hope, affection, and desire. Feelings unlike he had felt for his first wife. She had been just as fire brimmed as he, tempers sometimes rose fighting fire with fire, but they had a good marriage all the same. Lenika was as an even keel for him. A look from her, not unkind, just her look, and he knew when he was being too temperamental. She had soothed his wounds unexpectedly, subtly, without pressure. She had her wounds, too, and he wondered if he had done for her what she had done for him.

Most of all, though, she had helped with Lina. Lina, with such a sensitive soul, now slept soundly. The night terrors were so rare, and it was Lenika who was able to tend Lina better than any when the frights gripped his daughter. They shared a love of art as well, and he hoped maybe Lina would lead Lenika back to the craft she once adored.

Maybe the trip to her home would help as well. She had been gone long from there, and Gaerwyn could not deny he felt no small amount of nervousness in meeting her family. They had a different culture, way of doing things, and he wanted to court Lenika properly. He wanted to provide or support her in what she needed to be happy. But he did not want to rush her, and so he kept the courting slow and tried to follow her lead.

The Marketplace was rowdy and had signs of repair in one area even in the cold of the day late morning. He kept a weather eye out for the party he was meant to meet as well as something to take as a gift for Lenika?s mother. One more day before they sailed to meet her family; He had to do this right.

Lenika

Date: 2008-01-06 19:34 EST
The day had gone well; Lenika and the children were joined by Gaerwyn in the marketplace and they completed their shopping by purchasing any gifts for Lenika?s family and getting some food for a dinner at Ewan and Storm?s home. The children seemed to enjoy themselves immensely as they got to see the different shops and vendors; in fact, they stopped for light lunch, which was much to the delight of little Gaer. After the market, the informal family had gone back to the manor to get ready and prepare a dish or two for the dinner, which turned out to be a simple, enjoyable night with some laughter, smiles, and much goodwill.

Later in the evening, when the family had returned to the manor again and the children were tucked away in the bed, Lenika and Gaerwyn sat in the parlor curled up on the sofa. Gaerwyn stretched out his legs before him to the fire, one arm about Lenika's shoulders as he held her close as he said, ?It was a busy day all in all. Did we manage to get all the gifts we should?? He looked at her, but was taken by the way the firelight caught the red of her mahogany hair. His hand touched the tips of it in gentle admiration.

Lenika had one hand to his chest as she leaned her head toward him. Her gaze was on the mesmerizing dance of the fire flames, when she spoke she lifted her chin to look up and meet his eyes with her own, ?I think we did, and more importantly the day was enjoyed. Pretty soon we'll be leaving to see my family, are you ready for it,? she asked in half jest and half in earnest. Her own heart pounded in her chest at the idea and she was silently asking herself the same question, but she tried not to let her own nervousness show at this moment.

Gaerwyn took in a slow breath and did not hide the nervous widening of his eyes, but at the release of that breath he said, ?I will hope so. There is nothing for it but to do it, and I will hope for the best. I cannot be too bad, if I have earned your affection. I trust your judgment.? He smiled and kissed the top of her head.

?Mmm...? Lenika trailed off as she seemed to think on it a while then chuckled as she shifted against him and tilted her head back down against his chest, her hand sliding under her cheek to add extra cushion. There were a couple more moments of chuckling then she spoke again, ?I know they're going to just love the children. You may catch some teasing, however.? She took special care in not explaining that statement yet as she imagined her family?s inspection of Gaerwyn.

?Teasing?? Gaerwyn questioned and the rumble of curious laughter sounded. ?Do tell me. Teasing on what account??

?That I've brought you home with me.? Lenika lifted her head to grin up at him. ?It can be quite a big deal when we bring someone new home.?

?Ah, well then, I will be prepared for the ritual teasing.? Gaerwyn laughed then said, ?It is worth it to meet them and see your home, and the extra bonus of spending more time with you. I am glad you allowed me and the children to come along; I am very honored.?

?Perhaps you should wait for the gladness until after the trip. You may come to change your mind,? Lenika softly teased as she smiled up at him then she reached up to brush a hand along his cheek. It was finally time to admit some of her feelings about this new adventure, so she said it a bit softer as she lowered her hand from his face, ?I'm nervous, however.?

?It would take much to change my mind, in fact, I cannot even imagine what would do such a thing,? Gaerwyn said as his hand caressed her shoulder and arm. ?Nervous? Seeing your family? Is it because of the time you've been away??

?Yes, though we've written each other many times I know I will have much to hear about when we get there,? Lenika said with a quiet laugh. ?They like to share in stories and I may even be under some scrutiny of my life choices.?

?That is the right and duty of a family. And I look forward to the stories. Will I hear some of your childhood you think?? Gaerwyn gave a light teasing poke to her ribs, though no further intent in attempt to tickle her was made. Instead he breathed in the scent of her, and spoke softly, ?It feels good to hold you like this.?

Lenika laughed softly and shifted at the poke, but settled once he stopped. Her smile warmed at his words and it touched deep inside; feelings that she thought she?d never let herself have again. She lifted her hand to grab his hand as she said, ?You may hear stories; though, compared to my cousins I was a much more quiet child.? Lenika?s fingers rubbed gently over his, her light touch upon his knuckles then feeling the texture of the rest of his hand and she smiled, though not up at him as her gaze drifted to the fire once more. She felt the need now to respond to his affectionate words earlier. ?Yes, this feels very good. We may need to do it as much as possible before we go because we could be terribly busy once there.? She didn?t know how to admit it to him, but she didn?t want this moment to end for a long while.

?And for propriety sake, I should probably not hold and touch you as much as I would like when there. I would not want your family to think I do not respect you,? Gaerwyn said as he took a worry then and asked, ?You do know that I respect you, Lenika. That the fact I find you lovely and wish to be near you and hold you, does not diminish the affection I have for the person you are, yes?? Perhaps he was more nervous about meeting her family than even he thought, and it was coming out now in this quiet moment.

Lenika turned silent for a lengthy amount of time before she spoke again, ?I know you do. You treat me with respect and I think my family will know that regardless of holding or touching.? She looked up to him and touched the tips of her fingers to his chin as if he needing steadying, but perhaps it was her that needed it because she had every confidence in Gaerwyn. ?Be yourself and all will be well.?

Gaerwyn searched her eyes, and knew she spoke the truth and the best course of action, so he gave a nod, moved his chin so he might kiss those fingertips, and then tried to encourage her to take her ease against him again as he said with a chuckle, ?I will do my best. I think I may be so busy worrying that Gaer doesn't cause a ruckus that I won't think about being uneasy for long.?

It didn?t take Lenika too much encouragement as she snuggled up to him once more and laughed, though she kept it quiet so as not to wake anyone else. ?I wouldn't worry about that. He shall fit in with the other children,? she said then added a touch of concern to her voice, ?I do hope Lina will enjoy her time there.?

Gaerwyn considered the statement and the concern it held, and after a few moments said, ?I think she will. I think the excitement of seeing your homeland will be good for her. It will give her all new things to see and think about. Though?? he paused, ?Have you written your family about her troubles? She does not have them as often, true, and perhaps not at all while on this trip, but I would not want them alarmed should she be taken by a night terror.?

Lenika nodded against him as she spoke on the serious subject, ?I have told my mother and aunt, who will most likely warn everyone else.? She sighed softly,?I forget, did I tell you that you and the children are expected to stay with us?? That she would even forget weighed on her heart and made her worry a touch as she felt inconsiderate of this man, whom she had feelings for, and his children, whom she absolutely loved and adored.

?I did not know. I do not wish to inconvenience anyone.?

Lenika tapped his chest with her fingers as she said, ?They have insisted and I must do what I can to convince you. She was about to add something but stopped herself as she opened and closed her mouth. Her heart was pounding again as her thoughts of the upcoming trip overtook her and she laid her hand flat against his chest again and tried to use his steady strength to calm herself.

?Well, I will not say no, but will be sure that none will be put out by our staying,? Gaerwyn said as he saw her open and close her mouth. ?What is it??

?Then all is well,? Lenika smiled up at him some as his nearness did calm her. ?From what I last read they have all the rooms ready for our arrival and they've gone into to the town to get all the houses stocked with food. They do love to feed people.?

Gaerwyn laughed warm and hearty as he said, ?Then it would be rude of me to disappoint and cause trouble by refusing such hospitality. Indeed all is well.?

?Did I ever tell you how it is exactly situated with my family?? Lenika asked as she leaned away to look at him.

?I do not believe you have spoken in detail of it, no,? Gaerwyn said as he also adjusted his seating to have a more proper look upon her.

Lenika shifted, pulling away a bit more so that she sat in a more kneeled position on the sofa as she said, ?Well, my mother has three sisters and two brothers. At one point, they all lived away from each other but the sisters decided to come together and create their own sort of village outside of the town. Each has their own house and small plot of land then those of their children that didn't leave created their own space within that same circle. So...they're fairly close together.? She glanced down to her hands, where the pads of her fingers rubbed against each other, almost nervously as she added, ?It's odd, I know, but they couldn't bear living too far apart anymore.?

?I see nothing odd about it. Many a town has been built in such a manner. A family, or pair of families, builds and grows and builds and grows. I think it well your family enjoys and appreciates each other to the manner of desiring to be close by. It speaks well to their hearts.?

?There are few of us that have gone away, but we still visit. Though?? Lenika glanced to the fire as she trailed off then continued, ?I've probably stayed away the longest.?

?Is it hard for you to be away so long?? Gaerwyn asked as there was true concern and desire to know for certain on that account.

?I have my reasons for leaving, Gaerwyn,? Lenika said as she looked back to him and smiled a touch at his concern. She wasn?t ready to admit the reasons to anyone, perhaps even to herself. ?I would not trade my life with you, Lina, Gaer, and Maeve for anything.? She reached for his hand as she wanted him to believe that in her because she meant it with all her heart. ?Most importantly, I think, my mother understands why I am not there and she accepts it, though I think she'd like it more if I were to visit more often.?

Gaerwyn held her hand, gave a smile, and promised to her, ?Then I will be sure you do visit more often. If things go well, I will have another ship built for the family to use, a swifter vessel, so you can visit your family when you need.? In an effort to make the promise true, he admitted, ?I cannot say that will be within a month or two. Funds are a little tight with the new venture and the winter season. Spring comes around though, and things are going well, then I will be sure you have your ship.? He kissed the back of her hand to seal the vow.

Lenika couldn't help but smile at the gesture and his words. In a moment of impulsive gratitude, she leaned forward to slide her arms about to hug him and press a kiss to his mouth, but just as impulsive she leaned back with some measure of embarrassment. Even as level headed as she is, she has her moments. ?I?? She trailed off a moment as her cheeks flushed a faint pink since she knew he was a formal type of man and she had acted without thinking then continued, ?Thank you. You don't have to make a ship for me, believe me I do not want to add more strain to you already growing list of things that needs to be done, but I thank you from the deepest part of my heart.?

Gaerwyn was overwhelmed in the best sense of the word, and even tried to keep the kiss going, but some sense regained after the thrilling touch of her lips against his, so he did not chase after her. Instead he drew her close to him, and murmured soft into her hair, ?You add the most wonderful things to my life, love, and giving you happiness will never be a strain or a burden. A ship you will have. I promise it.?

Lenika didn't pull away from the embrace as she slid her arms back around him. She breathed in the scent of him and thrilled at his use of an endearment then spoke softly, ?And you have brought great joy and a real love back into my life. I would do all that I could for you.?

?Would you marry me, Lenika?? Gaerwyn asked. He had wanted to wait until after he met her family, for tradition, and so she might feel secure in having visited and spoken with her family, and he realized he spoke to soon. He opened his mouth to say she did not need to answer, but then realized the words were there. There was no taking them back. He did not want to for himself. He wanted to for her, and it could not be done.

Lenika

Lenika paused, evidently surprised by the question and she peeled herself away from him some so that she can search his face. She said nothing, but simply looked as her mind was reeling from the question and her heart pounded in her chest. Her first impulse was to say ?yes? and it took all her will not to simply agree, but she also knew she didn?t want to hurt this man and she didn?t know if she was ready to agree to the commitment of marriage, especially not after what has happened in the past. She needed and wanted time to fully realize the magnitude of her affection for this man and this trip would be what would answer any questions she still had inside of her, but there was still that nagging sensation in her heart that wanted nothing more than to marry him and do what she could to make him happy.

Gaerwyn tried for a smile and then gave a nod as he said, ?Do not answer now. It will keep.? He was sure the roaring sound in his ears, like the high winds at sea, was his heart tearing out of his chest in its swift beating. He breathed deep and slow, and hoped the firelight concealed the flush to his cheeks of embarrassment.

?You ask before you know the whole of my life. What if I lead you to disappointment or regret? Lenika finally asked as her mind got the better of her heart and her own measure of confidence dropped some as she added with a sinking feeling, ?Or worse heartache??

Gaerwyn?s hand moved to caress her cheek as he tried to communicate through touch what might fail in his words, ?I know there are things I do not know about you. I trust in you. I trust in my love for you.?

Lenika released a breath that she hadn't realized she was holding as she looked down to her lap, ?I trust in you, in us, but there's a part of me that lacks in trust of myself.? She glanced up to him and offered a small smile, ?You do have a way of giving me confidence when you look at me, though.?

Gaerwyn smiled and leaned forward trying to make it so she could look nowhere but at his eyes, ?One day, I hope that confidence will stay. There is so much I see in you that I wish you would see in yourself. We will help each other. I will support you in whatever you need. Your hopes and dreams will be mine as well. Trust in that.?

?I have always been hard on myself,? Lenika admitted softly as her gaze held onto his and her hands searched for his once more. ?And know that I would do what I could to support you, to make you and the children happy again. Perhaps...? She trailed off as she considers her words. He did not press or interrupt, but waited to hear her words. His hands held hers in gentle affection. ?Perhaps there is one dream we could have, together,? Lenika finally said. ?Perhaps, marriage, but you may still want to wait until after you meet my family. They have a way of changing minds.?

?They will have to put up quite a battle to change mine. But we will see. Let us enjoy the evening as we have it,? Gaerwyn tried to encourage her to return to his embrace with light tugs upon her hands. ?I would say wait until you meet my family, but you have. Roaring seas if you can put up with the strangeness of us, I should hope I have some ability to face your family. Would they be so set against me then??

There is a light chuckle as Lenika slowly is tugged into his arms once more, ?It's not that they would be set against you, but they have ever been protective and after past events of all us girls in the family, they exercise caution.?

?Past events,? Gaerwyn wondered if there was more than the catman. He knew there was, but not in anything but vague references.

?I do not mean just myself, but my cousins as well,? Lenika answered in some form of an explanation, but she never really gave a full one. ?Besides, it is somewhat customary to ask the parent for approval, though not all have followed that practice.?

?I do certainly intend to ask for approval. You can be assured of that, which is why I am more nervous than a tops'l in a lightening storm,? Gaerwyn chuckled then his voice turned a bit more serious with his next statement. ?If your mother should refuse?? He trailed off as it pained him to even think of it, ?I...well I simply cannot say what would happen then.?

?Then let me advise you on something,? Lenika tried to turn his palm so that she could brush her fingers against it in some form of reassurance and comfort for Gaerwyn. ?Ask her when the two of you are alone. If you do it when my aunts or cousins are about then you will have everyone's voice and opinion in your ears. They will know before we leave, for that I am certain?

Gaerwyn smiled and watched her fingers play upon his palm, listening to the advice and taking it to heart, ?I will then. Yes, better one on one then. Does your mother have a hobby of craft she favors? Or, maybe I can help fix something around the house. Build shelves?? He was certainly determined to make as good an impression as he could, which caused Lenika to smile and brush her fingers against his palm more.

Lenika laughed softly as she replied, ?The husband of one of my aunts does such work for my mother and she repays him with treats.? Her fingers paused on their tips, which were still on his palm then she placed her palm to his. ?I think, though, she will try to stop you from helping unless it's absolutely impossible. Like said, just be honest and yourself for you are a kind, loving and helpful man. Though, it doesn't hurt to eat her food.?

?Thank you and you can rest assured that I will be happy to eat her food. I have been getting a bit plump again this winter,? Gaerwyn said as he looked at his middle. ?I will have to forgo not eating so much for a little while longer as I would not want to be impolite to the hostess.?

Lenika slid her hand from his and gently poked at his middle as she said teasingly, ?All the more to adore, wouldn't you say??

?Oof!? Gaerwyn folded slightly more than necessary to play along, and chuckled, ?Oh, that's good to hear. Glad you approve of the extra flesh. Though, I should be trim enough in summer when the work picks up again.?

?And you will be. We'll just have to make the Fairy King works harder,? Lenika grinned at him as she gave his belly a pat. Their serious talk was over and they became lighthearted again, which made the night all the more enjoyable for both.

Gaerwyn laughed again and nodded, ?Aye, you do that. Good for him to get moving; can't sit on his throne all day eating fairy treats. Besides, might be a leak in the roof needs mending. Speaking of... I need to build you a wardrobe for your room at Seansloe. Chests and such be damned, you need a suitable place for your clothes to hang if you choose.?

?It's all right, Gaerwyn, I do not mind the chests?really,? Lenika said as she shifted again to ensure comfort of both. ?Let's just enjoy this trip first and make it back to Seansloe before discussing wardrobes.?

?Of course,? Gaerwyn nodded, though in his mind he is planning the construction, the type of wood he would need, the carving he would like to do, and so he settles into a pleasant silence, his arms around her comfortably, his cheek resting on the top of her head, and him breathing in her fragrance. It is in this silence that Lenika relaxed and enjoyed the time with him as she is unaware of Gaerwyn already planning the building o her new wardrobe, but nevertheless no words needed to be said at this point as the couple snuggled in front of the fire.

Lenika

It had taken two days to sail from Rhydin to the port of Lenika?s home, and now it was still morning and the informal family was traveling on the road that would bring them to Lenika?s family village. There were few bumps on the road as it had been smoothed down from years of being traveled from the docks, so Lenika, Gaerwyn, and the children were able to sit together comfortably on the large wagon, with their luggage being brought in another wagon behind them. Lenika only stirred from her almost daydreaming state when she saw the edges of the land that she had grown up on then she awoke completely as they pulled onto the family land.

The little plot of land that Lenika had mentioned on their journey to her home was greatly under exaggerated as it seemed to have many various houses settled on it as well as enough room for much outside activity. Each house had its own fence to designate property space, but there were acres around the fenced in houses that seemed as if it could go on and on, and it looked well maintained to signify that it was owned; of course, any local would know the land of the Marshall family.

The wagons that had brought them to the village were driven by her uncles, whom Lenika had introduced as simply Uncle Bo and Uncle Micah. Both were quiet and balding, though Uncle Bo?s was by his own choice, and had grey mustaches. The uncles had greeted them all respectfully, but both seemed reserved in emotion, even for Lenika. As Lenika dismounted from the wagon, with help from her uncles, she then moved to help Gaerwyn with the children and luggage, which Uncle Bo was quick to assist with as Micah set to taking care of the horses and wagons once they were empty. Through all of this, people seemed to have emerged from the houses to stand on the porches to watch and await the "new" arrivals and one?s returned visit. In his parting words to Gaerwyn as Uncle Bo started to bring one of the suitcases in, he chuckled as he figured Gaerwyn may need this and said, "Good luck, son."

Gaerwyn smiled to Uncle Bo, gave a nod, and offered in return, ?My thanks, sir.? He turned to face the gathered people, and urged his children forward. Gaer was having no problem with the prospect of more people to pay attention to him as his charm was on full as he smiled. Lina was a bit more shy and in fact, reached for Lenika's hand trying for a death grip in support. Gaerwyn put forth a friendly smile and decided it was going to be like meeting a new crew. Be friendly, polite, and at ease in his skin. Thinking was easier than doing, though.

Lenika smiled as her uncle began taking the luggage as per his instructions from his wife and carried it toward a particular house that was somewhat separated from the others. In his return for more of the packages he brought a few more of the gents in the family, who all also offered their "good lucks" to Gaerwyn and chuckles. Apparently, they felt he would need all the support he could get.

Lenika then turned her smile to Gaerwyn and his children as she held Lina's hand in her own and gave it a pat as she said, ?It won't be so bad, Gaerwyn. They'll wait until my mother sees you first. Come on.? She started towards the one lone house with no one waiting outside for them.

Gaerwyn made his thanks and nods to the various well wishers, and each one adding to the tension. Lenika's comment brought out a warm laugh, and he nodded. "Well then, best she get a look at me straight away and satisfy their opinion."

?Lina?? Lenika spoke her name softly as she guided them all to the house. ?My mother has made sure my old art room is prepared if you or I choose to do any projects. She's glad to have an artist back in the house again.? There was another squeeze for the girl's hand, which caused Lina to smile with anticipation taking up some of the space of worry then Lenika tried to offer a reassuring smile to Gaerwyn.

Gaerwyn smiled his thanks to Lenika and made sure to remember to thank her mother as well for the kindness as he said, ?See there, Lina, you will be up to your elbows in artwork before the next day is out, I wager.?

Lenika held a breath as they reached the stairs to the house that had to be at least three stories tall and modestly colored with a small garden in the front. The door was open as luggage had been brought in, but Lenika stalled on the porch as if waiting for some catastrophe to happen. She was nervous and worried as to what her mother would think, but she also knew her mother would not be impolite to her guest. In an effort to get moving she announced to the group gathered about her, ?Well, we're here. I supposed we should go inside.?

The people from the other houses had started to resume what they were doing as the informal family had made their way to the largest house in the family village. They knew their boundaries and would wait until they were called upon, which was much to their dislike. Nevertheless, though, there were still some prying eyes watching until Lenika and the trio had started to make their way inside the house.

?Mother,? Lenika called out as the family made their way inside. She was about to call again until she heard a noise come from the kitchen and a voice.

?In the kitchen, come in here,? said Ruth, Lenika?s mother, in her pleasantly warm voice. Lenika glanced back to Gaerwyn and the children before leading them to the kitchen. Gaerwyn followed in, Gaer's curiosity getting the better of him was bouncing on his feet for the rest of everyone to move faster to the voice that said something about being in the kitchen, his favorite place, and Lina was near treading on Lenika's heels taking up a space just behind the woman.

?Do you want to announce our arrival, Gaer,? Lenika offered the boy since he was bouncing, but little Gaer was already moving into the kitchen without any fear as the rest of the group trailed behind him. Lenika paused once inside the kitchen, where her mother stood at one of the counters.

Ruth?s smile was radiant and warm as she watched the group gather in then she motioned to the counter lined with food as she exclaimed, ?I made you all something to eat!?

Gaer beamed a smile, and by some miracle, managed to have manners and say, ?Thank you, ma'am. Thank you very much.? He scrambled forward for some food. Lina smiled shyly, but did not move from Lenika.

Gaerwyn bowed his head as he said, ?A pleasure to meet you, and my thanks for the welcoming meal.? Though, he did not add "and then some" seeing the length of food lined counter.

Lenika's mother laughed and nudged the stool for Gaer to use in his food grabbing manner then moved forward to embrace her daughter. Lenika released Lina's hand long enough to hug her mother and press a kiss to her cheek. Soft words of missing each other were expressed before both women leaned away from each and Lenika took to the introductions. She motioned to each person as she said their names, ?The little one attacking the food is Gaer, Mother. This is Lina.? She held onto the girl's hand once more then reached out to touch Gaerwyn's arm as she introduced him with affection, ?And this is Gaerwyn.?

Gaer, having felt he'd made his introduction, just smiled at the official one. Lina bobbed a curtsey. Gaerwyn bowed again as he said, ?You have fine country and beautiful land here.?

Ruth looked over each person then smiled warmly again as she said, ?You're right. They're simply lovely.? She touched Lenika's cheek as they seemed to share a silent moment with each then nodded to Gaerwyn, ?Thank you. I'm glad she has brought you to see it. I hope you enjoy your stay.? Ruth then turned a glance down to Lina and offered more gently, ?Would you like something to eat or perhaps to see the art room??

Lina looked from Lenika to her father, who gave an encouraging nod that either choice was fine. She gave a smile and nod, ?If I could, please, the art room??

Gaerwyn grinned and said, ?I will keep an eye on Gaer and make sure he does not eat you out of house and home.?

Ruth laughed and waved off the statement, ?I've plenty. I love guests!? She positively glowed as she reached to take Lina's hand and lead her to the art room as she spoke to Lina, ?My daughter has said you are such a wonderful artist, perhaps you can teach me some time, dear one.?

Ruth?s praise of the girl continued until they were in the other room, where Lina was shown the different materials she could work with and letting the girl decide when she wanted to return to her father. In delighted awe, some strange reverence as if Lina had stepped into a sanctuary, the girl looked over everything like it was a token of magical craft.

Lina blushed at the compliment with a slight shrug of slender shoulders as she said, ?I am not so good as Lenika, but I'm learning. She has a whole room for art.? The excitement of the thought coated her words.

Lenika turned to Gaerwyn and stepped closer to touch her hand to his and give it a squeeze as she said in a teasing manner, ?I think she was more excited to see you and the children than she was me.?

Gaerwyn kissed the back of Lenika's hands then said, ?Ah, her joy in seeing you was very apparent to me, but I am glad so far I am on approval. I just need to keep this course.?

Lenika and Gaerwyn looked towards Gaer, who simply was enjoying the meal, which was evident on his hands and face, then chuckled as she said, ?He seems to have no problems with this visit.? She did pause and glance in the direction that her mother and Lina had drifted off to before she said softly, informingly to Gaerwyn, ?Now, she most likely will ask you to call her Ruth, but I will leave that to your decision.?

Gaerwyn chuckled, ?Yes, food is his handshake. If she asks, then I will abide by her wishes.?

Lenika squeezed Gaerwyn's hands as she decided to speak of the visit some and her voice cracked a little with her nervousness, ?It is going well so far, don't you think so? I'm sure we will have a quiet dinner tonight with my mother then tomorrow she will, no doubt, want to show you and the children off to everyone.?

?I look forward to meeting them all,? Gaerwyn said as he leaned to give a kiss to her cheek while the coast was clear, which helped to calm Lenika down as they heard the hurried footsteps of Lina and her mother as Lina rushed back to tell her father all that she saw. Lenika and Gaerwyn still held hands, but they did add a little distance between them until everyone was comfortable with their relationship. Ruth simply watched her daughter with this man, Gaerwyn, as Lina eagerness distracted the couple.

?Oh, papa, you should see it. I've never seen such space and light and all the things in it? Not that?? Lina trailed off as she suddenly became aware of what she was saying. ?That I do not have a lot, papa, you always bring me things. It's just...it's a whole room just for art.?

Gaerwyn kissed his daughter's head then said, ?I think I know where to find you during our stay. Now, love, you have not eaten very well this morning or the past day. Take some food and be easy.?

With a satisfied smile from witnessing Gaerwyn?s reaction to Lina?s excitement, she added her own comments, ?It's just like when you were little and we made that room, Lenika.? She stepped forward to place a featherlight touch to her daughter's cheek and Lenika smiled in return. Ruth then turned to watch Gaer eating before she moved to get another plate. These people needed to eat more and enjoy themselves. ?Is anyone else hungry? If you need your things they are on the second floor. Lenika, you know which rooms I like the guests to stay in.?

Lina went to get her meal, Gaerwyn feeling the need to make sure she chose suitably, said to Ruth, ?Excuse me a moment.? And he went to help his daughter in her food selections, so she would get something more hearty than just fruits. He had been nervous, Lina had been petrified and it had kept her from eating well. The girl, however, had a much better appetite now, and looked to be doing well. Gaerwyn returned to Lenika as he asked, ?Can I help with getting things in their proper places??

Ruth watched as Gaerwyn helped his daughter and she smiled again, though Lenika motioned with her hand to grab her mother?s attention before she said, ?Gaerwyn and I will eat in a moment, Mother, so that we can get our things settled.? Lenika smiled to Gaerwyn as he returned to him and nodded as she said, ?Certainly. Shall I show you where the rooms are??

?Do as you will, Lenika,? Ruth said as she motioned to her daughter before she moved to begin picking from the fruit platter herself. If they didn?t want to eat then she would as well as delight in the children?s company without meddlesome couples and their need to be uncomfortable.

?Please do,? Gaerwyn gave a nod, and one as well to Ruth, and then went to help with the things.

?We'll be right back, Mother, Lina and Gaer,? Lenika said as she moved from the room and went up the stairs to help Gaerwyn.

Ruth watched as the couple stepped out of the kitchen and she chuckled as she almost thought they might have some spur of the moment tryst upstairs. In fact, the chuckling continued and grew some as she figured they wouldn?t, but alas as the children began to notice and look at her as she mused to herself, Ruth settled to eating her fruit and talking with the little ones, who seemed more than ready to share. Lina had sat by her brother who, upon finishing half of his plate, was ready to regale Ruth with tales of their trip over, in the details and imagination of a child, naturally. Lina corrected Gaer when possible.

?I think my mother is very happy to have the children here,? Lenika said to Gaerwyn as she led him to a room where the luggage was stacked. ?How would you like the rooms to be? Do you want the children here with you or would you like Lina to stay with me? Separate rooms for the children??

?Whatever is best for you, though, perhaps it might be best if the children are with me. That way you can enjoy being home, and they know where I am. It probably is not necessary, but I would feel better,? Gaerwyn responded as he was ready to get to work.

Lenika turned to reach for his hand and give it a squeeze before the lifting began, ?And know I would not hesitate to have Lina or Gaer stay with me, but I will do as you wish.? On impulse and the moment alone she leaned up quickly to press a light kiss to his cheek then pointed to the far end of the hallway as she said, ?The last door on the right will be big enough for all three of you and I am one door up on the left.?

Gaerwyn kissed her cheek in turn and then started to place the luggage and items as needed by the given directions, and spoke all the while, ?I know, love, that you wouldn't mind having the children, but be in your home and enjoy it. If in a day or two, Lina feels she just can't breath, unless she is in your room, we can make the change.?

?Very well, and know if you need anything, Gaerwyn, you can come to me,? Lenika said as she took a few of the packages they brought and helped to place them where they needed to be.

?That I will; particularly since I don't know where you packed the gift for your mother,? Gaerwyn said as he grinned and caught a kiss to her cheek in passing. They were working well as a team and everything would be put away soon enough.

Lenika laughed and moved a few things to her room then stepped back out as she teased, ?I hope I remember.? As he was passing by her and before he went to actually get anything else to carry, she reached for his arm to stop him as she asked with some concern, ?Any regrets thus far??

In truth undeniable, Gaerwyn smiled and caressed her cheek, ?No regrets at all. It is a good trip, and only to get better.? He leaned over to tease in whisper, ?Maybe there'll be dancing.?

Gaerwyn?s words brought a smile to Lenika?s face and her concern vanished for now as she said, ?Perhaps there will be, though you may be stolen from me.?

?Stolen from you?? Gaerwyn asked he smirked, the notion striking him as impossible then said, ?Not unless I am requested to take a turn with your mother or aunts; must keep the seas calm and the weather gauge in our favor.?

Lenika laughed softly as she imagined her aunts requesting dances of Gaerwyn then she said, ?That's precisely who may steal you away, though...perhaps they will be too busy adoring the children to do so.? It was true as the women in her family absolutely doted on children that came to visit.

?Ah, then my master plan works. Distract them with cute, but needy children, and I have you all to myself,? Gaerwyn said as he chuckled and finished putting things away. ?Shall we return downstairs and be sure my children have not overrun the household already??

?And I have no doubt my mother would give them anything they desired, but yes let's return downstairs,? Lenika said as she turned to go back down the stairs just as she heard her mother laugh at some funny part in Gaer's stories.

Gaer was as animate in his stories as he could be. Lina was hiding her face in embarrassment, but all seemed well enough to Gaerwyn's eye. He began to fix a plate for himself and called to Gaer before his enthusiastic storytelling toppled his chair over, ?Gaer sit, please while you spin your sea tales.?

Lenika moved to take a plate as well and fill it with some things, but not overmuch then she went to join the family at the table. Ruth tried to keep her attention on the children as much as possible, as she added in appropriate sounds and comments where needed for little Gaer?s tales, but she couldn?t help but smile a touch as she as Gaerwyn get food and the couple eventually joining a table that had been empty for far too long before this informal family came to visit. It was a home filled with people once more.

Lenika

It was still early morning on the second day of the visit, but by the time Lenika was washed and dressed with her long mahogany hair braided back and she was walking down the stairs, she could hear her mother's voice as well as the sounds of Gaerwyn and the children. In addition, she heard two other voices as they ooh'd and aah'd over the children and asked questions of what everyone would like to do for the day. Upon the last step and the winding of her way into the kitchen, where he mother would have ushered everyone to sit, eat, and talked she announced her arrival with a slight smile and a somewhat cheerful voice as she wondered what sort of trouble her two aunts have caused already and how much they have grilled Gaerwyn on, ?Starting early today, everyone??

Gaer beamed up his jam sticky face at Lenika's arrival. Lina found a little more straightness to her spine and confidence to her smile, and Gaerwyn rose from the table to greet her with a touch to her hand as he said, ?Good morning. Sleep well??

?I did, thank you,? Lenika said as her smile warmed upon Gaerwyn's touch. ?I do hope my aunts haven't interrogated you too much this morning.? All three of the older women grinned as Lenika gave them a skeptical look.

Then one of the women called out to her neice without shame before she began to eat bread with jam and became sticky like little Gaer, ?Lenika, he's absolutely darling!?

?We have been having a fine conversation over a range of topics, including your childhood,? Gaerwyn said as the last is obviously a tease from the twinkle in his lagoon blue eyes.

Lina, however, did not want her father to get away with it, so she said, ?Stop it, papa. It isn't true, Lenika. They've been talking most about his work, trade, and farming.?

Gaerwyn looked innocent, and defended himself, ?It is fine ham you all have here, and I was curious as to the raising of the stock.?

Lenika decided to let Gaerwyn?s teasing go for the moment as she planned to get him back at a more opportune time, so she chose to speak about the land of her family, ?Well, the farming is mostly under the supervision of my Aunt Eva.? She motioned to the woman closest to her mother, who was watching Lenika and Gaerwyn with a twinkle in her eye and a knowing smile. ?She enjoys gardening. The animals are my Aunt May's love,? she said as she motioned to the jam covered aunt, who seemed to be playing some sort of sticky fingers game with Gaer. Lenika shook her head then moved over to Lina and touched her cheek gently as she murmured to her, ?Thank you for protecting me, and did you sleep well?? She also smiled to her mother, as more words were in her eyes than from her mouth and Ruth simply smiled and nodded before Lenika shifted her attention to Gaerwyn and asked. ?Have you any idea what you'd like to do today??

Lina nodded and added much to the laughter and delight of the womenfolk, ?Papa did not even snore at all.?

Gaerwyn took mock offense as he said, ?I only snore when I have a cold, Lina, so naturally I did not snore.? He shook his head and chuckled afterwards as Lina looked as if she had gotten a good sting in on her father and smiled down at her plate. Gaerwyn turned to Ruth and said, ?At Lenika's leisure, I would like to take a further walk of the lands. Meet her family and what all she would like to show me.? He winked at Lenika though he continued, ?A few tales of her youth would not be amiss, either.?

Lenika laughed softly then bent to press a kiss to the top of Lina's head as she murmured into the girl?s ear, ?You did good.? She straightened as she heard Gaerwyn speak with her mother.

?I'm sure Lenika would be glad to show you everything,? Ruth said as she flicked a look to Lenika and raised her eyebrows in an almost challenging manner, again they had that silent communication going on, which caused Lenika to clear her throat and offer up her best smile.

?Of course I plan on showing him around, Mother,? Lenika responded as smooth as possible.

The aunts spoke up in unison, as if they were twins, which they weren't, ?We will watch the children. They can play with the other children if that's fine with them and you, Sir.?

?Oh, of course, and please, call me Gaerwyn,? Gaerwyn said as he looked at his children. ?Lina, Gaer?? trailed off as he waited until he had their eyes on him. ?When I head out, you are to be mindful and polite.?

Gaer gave an "of course" roll of his eyes, and Lina nodded as she said, ?Yes, papa.?

Gaerwyn wasn't having it out of Gaer, and prompted, ?Gaer??

Gaer responded promptly, ?Yes, papa.?

Aunt May chuckled delightedly at Gaer's spirit and nudged the boy, she was perhaps as mischevious as the children, ?We've got mud.? Gaer was all into Aunt May, thinking he found a kindred spirit the boy was probably going to stick to that woman like glue.

Ruth then spoke up again, ?Lina, just let us know what you would like to do while Lenika and your father are gone. I may be cooking, while some work in the garden, and others will be doing various activities.?

Lina gave a smile and nod, ?I would like to go to the art room, if I may, please.?

Ruth responded to with Lina with a nod and smile as she said, ?Of course you may, dear.?

Lenika turned to Gaerwyn and smiled as she said as she moved over to select a plate, where she placed some fruit, bread and cheese upon it, ?I'll eat something then we can go??

Gaerwyn gave a nod as he said, ?Certainly, at your leisure, honestly.?

After Gaerwyn?s response Lenika moved over to sit in one of the chairs at the large table and began to eat, while Aunt May leaned over to talk to Gaer about other things they could do; her talk including mud, pigs, cats, dogs, birds, as well as some sort of wagon ride.

Aunt Eva rose from the table as Lenika sat, she seemed to be a woman on a mission, as she announced, ?The day is getting shorter, sisters, and I need to start cleaning. I shall see you all later.? She waved and hurried out as her two sisters laughed.

Ruth then turned her attentions to Gaerwyn and motioned to him as she gave Lenika time to eat, ?Come, sit with us more and tell us of your ships and trade.?

Lenika

Lina took her empty plate and glass to the sink and moved to kiss her papa on the cheek before going off to the art room. Gaer giggled and made suggestions of his own, particularly in regards to playing fetch and chase with the animals and feeding and brushing them as Gaerwyn moved to take a seat at Ruth's bidding and nodded, ?Well, two ships, as I said, the Inspire and the Escape. The Inspire stays mostly in my homeland, though I use it for personal trips as well. The Escape ventures to other lands and longer trips. A new trade we've started up in Rhydin, and though it is the winter season, things look promising. I hope to have another ship in the works this spring, a smaller, swifter vessel for Lenika and the family's use. It all depends on the trade, which I think will do well. High marks for grain which does not seem to grow too well in the regions of Rhydin.?

Ruth seemed pleased with his words as she nodded, ?It would be nice to see my daughter more.? With her mother?s words, Lenika simply kept on eating as she seemed to duck down a bit and continued to listen. ?It would also seem you've made a fine life for yourself and your family, Gaerwyn.? Ruth took special care in not including Lenika in that yet as she glanced to her silent daughter with a knowing look, though she quickly went back to talking to Gaerwyn. ?You know that if you ever needed something, especially since your family has been taking care of Lenika, we would be happy to assist.?

?That is very gracious of you, ma'am. Lenika has given more care I think than we have given her. It has been an honor to have her in our home,? Gaerwyn said then paused with a glance to Lenika, but the time seemed an appropriate one, and he looked back to Ruth. ?My Aunt Maeve wanted me to express her sincere gratitude to you for Lenika's time with us, and respect to you for raising such a wonderful daughter.? He knew Lenika might feel uncomfortable and she was as she bowed her head and kept on eating, but the words were sincerely sent and spoken. Gaerwyn moved on to the conversation, ?I have tried to do well by my family. Some years in the kingdom's navy, and I knew I was best suited to the sea, so I went the way of the merchant mariner in my own way helping my country and seeing to the welfare of my family. I hope to continue to do so to the best of my ability.?

Ruth smiled and her cheeks colored faintly at his words. The compliment warmed her and she had gratitude she wanted to express, "I would send thanks to your Aunt Maeve for taking grand care of my daughter as well.? She glanced at Lenika, who conveniently was finishing the food on her plate then rose to take it to the sink. It seemed Lenike wanted to remain out of the conversation, perhaps out of the spotlight of the pair, so Ruth continued, ?From what I can see of you, Gaerwyn, I can see you will continue to do well and keep your family well taken care of. I can appreciate and admire that.?

?Thank you, ma'am,? Gaerwyn said as he bowed his head. ?You and your family have done very well, too. It is a grand and successful endeavor this village. I could not imagine the work it must have taken and the fortitude. We seem to have wandered into the realm of mutual admiration, for I believe I will learn much about improving the workings of my business from the workings here of your family lands.?

Ruth laughed and settled back in her chair, ?Our family is quite close, Gaerwyn, and it has always been a dream of my sisters and I to have our own sort of village. We also are still part of the larger town down the road, which helps. As you are shown around, there are many areas for exploration. It's an enjoyable, quiet land.? She glanced to her daughter who had turned to watch her mother and Gaerwyn.

Gaerwyn nodded, ?I look forward to seeing it. It will help me gain my landlegs.? He jested with a hearty laugh.

Lenika pushed from her lean as she took that glance from her mother as her cue to interject, ?Then I suppose we should get going.? She moved to press a kiss to the top of Gaer's head and she told her Aunt May jokingly, ?You two behave yourselves.? Her aunt merely laughed and continued the plan making with Gaer as Lenika moved over to Gaerwyn and touched a hand to his shoulder, ?Would you care to go now? I know my mother is ready to start cleaning herself.?

Gaerwyn nodded and stood, ?Then let us be on our way if remaining we would only be in the way. It was a wonderful breakfast, ma'am, thank you.? There was a final warning to Gaer, ?Gaer, mind what I said.? The boy laughed and gave a vague nod to his father, as he was near climbing into Aunt May's lap with enthusiasm for their adventures that day. Gaerwyn followed Lenika and when they were ready, would open the door for her.

Aunt May practically grabbed the boy up to clean his face and take him to where the other children would be. Lenika moved to the door with Gaerwyn without another word as she was anxious to leave the scrutiny of her mother and mess that her aunt and little Gaer were bound to make. When he opened the door, she slipped out by him then started down the porch steps and to the gate leading out of their family village. She waited for him on the outside as she glanced up and down the road then once they were together she reached to take his hand. She wanted to say something, so she opened and closed her mouth but no words seemed to make it out and she simply gave up trying to voice her thoughts.

Gaerwyn?s hand curled in affectionate warmth about hers. He saw her open and close her mouth, and gave a smile to encourage her, ?I'm a straightforward fellow, Lenika, as you well know. If I made a grave error with your mother, you had best tell me straight out.?

The words Lenika heard from Gaerwyn flooded her with relief, which caused her to laugh lightly as she said, ?You didn't. It's me, honestly.? She gave his hand a reassuring squeeze and decided to change topics as she wasn?t ready to face the one she had in her head. ?How about I show you a place where you can look out and see the ocean??

?That would be grand, though I would like to know what it is you were going to say,? Gaerwyn motioned for her lead on. ?Tell me on the way there. The ocean, though she can be a bit temperamental, can make some words easier to say or hear.?

?In truth?? Lenika started as she walked with him. There doesn't seem to be anyone on the road this morning and eventually, she guided them off the road to lead him down a more out of the way path, which was surrounded by lush trees, grass, bushes and any manner of vegetation. Gaerwyn was pushing the issue of what was in Lenika head, so she spoke about some of it, but not all, ?I think she's waiting for a chance to talk to me. She knows I'm happy, believe me, but I know she has questions that she feels she can only ask me. She's simply waiting for me to say I'm ready to talk. You've impressed her, I think, and I know that she's in love with your children.?

Gaerwyn smiled, as he was glad to know that Lenika was happy and that her mother knew it too. At the comment of the children, he chuckled, ?I will hope Gaer does not cause the pigs to get into the garden, or the love she feels for them might be a bit tainted.? He gave a light squeeze to her hand in hopes she would be sure she knew he teased. In a more serious tone, ?I am sure you will have the talk when you are ready. It is not as if we are leaving tomorrow. We have time.? He took a moment to look over the land, smiling in the scenery.

?I know. Just, know this, sometimes my mother and I argue. There are choices I have made, which I know she didn't approve of or did not understand and it has yet to be let go between us. Our love for each other is there, but there are things...? Lenika trailed off as she seemed unable to finish and her hand seemed to slip a little from his but then she smiled as their path soon led to a small beach area and she wouldn?t have to admit some of her history to him right at the moment. ?Here we are.?

The beach was sandy, to be sure, with rocks, twigs, and shells scattered about and in the cream colored sand. There were several bushes and a couple trees surrounding the area to lend a somewhat private setting if need be. The water rolled in gently and was a nice dark shade of blue.
Gaerwyn did not press Lenika once she announced they had reached the beach. He simply gave a nod, though he lacked full understanding, he could only compare it to the disagreements he and his father had years ago now, but he would not simplify her situation by comparison. His father and he had disagreed as fathers and sons do. Gaerwyn felt Lenika's situation with her mother was a bit more complex than that. He took a deep breath of the sea air and focused on the scenery some more, ?So we are. What a happy place this is. Did you and your family come here often, or just you??

?We all did. They taught all of us to swim and now they teach the younger children. Water is in our blood,? Lenika said as she breathed in deep. She wanted to run and crash into the waves as she used to do when she was a child, but the water was much too cold this time of year and the last thing she wanted was to be sick and leave Gaerwyn to be on his own with her family. ?We also fished, though I was never very good.?

?What a grand time that must have been. I, too, had times at the ocean shore learning to swim and fishing, though I never did have as good a knack for it as Ewan, blast it all,? Gaerwyn said, though his disappointment is obviously under the friendly, family rivalry kind and not any true animosity over it. ?I can fish well enough, though. And I understand the water, the sea, being part of you. No wonder you took to sailing so well.?

Lenika turned a smile up to him and found that he was smiling at her, ?Indeed. Like art, it was something I loved but don't spend as much time with it anymore.? She seemed happy, despite her not doing what she loves. ?Perhaps we will visit here when the weather is warmer and the children can all swim.?

?Good thought. As to your art, well?? Gaerwyn paused. ?You know how I feel about that. You will take it up again or not to your benefit. It is what makes you happy that is important.? He looked down upon the beach and found a shell, which he took care in raising it up to be sure it was empty. Seeing it was, he pocketed it as he explained, ?Lina will like to see it.?

?Of course,? Lenika nodded at the explanation then slid closer and squeezed his hand. ?How about I show you where my cousins and I used to play when we were younger??

?Please do.? Gaerwyn was eager to see more and nodded for her to lead on as he asked, ?How many cousins do you have again?? He was determined to try and remember this time.

?Twelve and that is not counting husbands or wives.? Lenika started leading him from one hidden pathway to across the road to another path, though this one is more winding and uphill some. As they walked, the grass grew taller and the trees bigger for the growth on this side was much more wild than where they had previously been. ?We've all been raised as if we're brothers and sisters.?

Gaerwyn gave a low whistle, ?Large family indeed, and close at that. It is good to hear, though I must admit to no notion of such a thing. I had but three cousins in total, and only one living still.?

?Well, there are four sisters counting my mother and two brothers, but their families do not live within our community,? Lenika explained until they came along a somewhat flat clearing though it was surrounded by tall grass and much more greenery. ?We often would hide from each other here. It was easy to get lost in tall grass.?

Lenika

Date: 2008-01-12 20:15 EST
Gaerwyn surveyed the area with a smile as he imagined a young Lenika and her cousins all playing in among the grasses and nature. ?It is a fine spot. I believe I can see a little you laughing among the green with cousins about.?

Lenika laughed as she thought about the times that she used to play in this clearing and the surrounding areas, ?I did and they always found me! Did you do anything like this when you were young??

Gaerwyn nodded slow as he said, ?Oh, some. When I was very young, my friends and I would climb trees and play hiding and finding games. I was sent to sea when I was...oh, I suppose four or five years older than Lina. I could not say exactly when since we do not keep track of the day of our birth, but I can give some account to approximate. Then, of course, it was learning the trade and the ways of seamanship. On land, the play was a bit bolder, and perhaps a bit more cocky. I hope to have grown out of it.? He grinned at her. ?But, aye, my friends and I played and had such fun in the fields and shoreline.?

?Then we come from like lives.? It felt appropriate, so Lenika leaned to press a kiss to his cheek before she admitted, ?Though, I never did learn how to climb a tree.?

Gaerwyn exchanged the kiss for one to her cheek, and giving a cheeky grin. ?Wish to give it a try,? he asked as he eyed a particularly good climbing tree not far off.

Lenika laughed and gave his hand a light tug. She couldn?t believe he was asking her that and she almost wished he hadn?t. ?Are you serious??

?Of course,? Gaerwyn said as he nodded and took a few steps backwards toward that tree, an encouraging tug on her hand. ?Come on then. I won't tell,? he feigned a whisper.

Lenika laughed again, though this one had a nervous tremor, as she followed at his tug. ?It's not the telling I worry about, but the falling.? She glanced up to the tree once they reached it and she tried not to audibly gulp.

?I will catch you, promise,? Gaerwyn smiled. ?Now then, want some advice or just give it a go with instinct? I think you'll find it easier than you think.?

?Advice,? Lenika asked as she seemed unsure and she wasn't all that willing to continue moving toward the tree as her feet felt like they had filled with lead the closer Gaerwyn got to the tree. She didn?t really want to try and she didn?t want to tell him that.

?Perhaps I could help by showing you how I would do it?? Gaerwyn let go of her hand and got close to the tree, looking up at its nice arrangement of limbs perfect for climbing. Once Gaerwyn was away, Lenika gulped and watched him warily.

?Yes, you do that, Gaerwyn and I'll catch you if you need it.?

Gaerwyn?s laugh was hearty, ?I would actually recommend stepping out of the way. I'd rather not crush your lovely frame.? Lenika moved back as he grabbed a lower limb and one just a bit higher, his feet against the trunk, he climbed and pulled himself up to that lower branch and sat. Getting his feet under him, he moved on to the next length of tree to climb, testing limbs before trusting them and climbed up through a variety of branches to another strong one that held his weight. Feeling he had made his point he said, ?Come on then. I shall climb down and let you have a go at it.?

?I don't know, Gaerwyn. Perhaps I ought to leave the climbing to you.? Lenika was still hesitant despite Gaerwyn?s marvelous display and she shook her head. Her feet still felt heavy and her hands started to feel like she no longer had a grip.

Gaerwyn made his way down and dropped smooth from the last branch. He brushed off the bits of leaf and bark from his clothes as he nodded, ?Very well. But I think I will ask you every day if you want to give tree climbing a try. Maybe some day you will. And, perchance, one day if Gaer or Lina get stuck in a tree for some reason, and I am not there, you will be confident in your knowledge that you can climb a tree and help them down.? He reached for her hand and kissed the back of it.

?That's right, you taught them, didn't you?? There seemed to be a measure of confidence that dropped as Lenika looked to the tree. He had to mention the children climbing trees and getting stuck, so her heart sank. She would have no other choice but to learn how to climb and her throat felt like it wanted to close, but she tried not to show her fear as she said, ?If they get stuck and I cannot get them down...? Her voice trailed off as she didn?t want to imagine the children being afraid or hurt and she could not help them. Lenika swallowed hard as she tried to gather her strength to try the tree climbing.

?Oh do not fret on it, Lenika,? Gaerwyn soothed. ?I have yet to see a tree Lina cannot get in and out of with ease. Gaer is a bit young and only has climbed small trees, but trust to Lina. Not a worry over it. Climb a tree or not, love.? Gaerwyn grinned and looked again over the scenery, taking in another deep breath; his game of tree climbing with Lenika done with for now.

Lenika nodded as she was calming the instant Gaerwyn did not try to force the issue of climbing trees upon her anymore. In some part of her mind, she wanted to thwap him for bring it up when he had confidence in his daughter?s abilities. Instead of smacking him for that, she breathed in the air deep as it was fresh and clean. ?Very well, Gaerwyn, I'll try not to worry over it too much. Do you want to head back and see what trouble my aunt has gotten Gaer into or walk some more?? Maybe she?d get him back for the jests later.

?Let us walk on, if you do not mind. The company being most excellent, I would like to enjoy it for a bit longer in peace. I would like to hear more of your childhood as well. Were you formally taught in a school or at home??

Lenika held onto his hand as they started walking again. ?We did have schooling, yes, but also at home. All the aunts were diligent of helping us to learn. Some of my cousins didn't take to it as well as others.?

?Have you a favorite subject?? Gaerwyn added in haste, ?Other than art??

?I enjoyed reading, actually, because before I actually did get to see some of the different lands, books were my way of exploring the world.?

?I enjoy reading, but it has never become a great passion. You must enjoy staying at Yearling Brook then, for the Baroness I believe shares your reading pleasures for all the books she has there.?

Lenika laughed softly as Gaerwyn seemed to know her well enough. ?When I'm there, I do enjoy reading the books. I have some of my own in some of those chests you do not think are appropriate any longer. Art was always my true favorite.?

?Then we also need bookshelves as well as a wardrobe. It shall be a building season before spring comes.? Gaerwyn grinned as he was already planning what he will build in ?his mind. Aye, and your art, particularly your sculpting, I hear, is very accomplished.?

?It's adequate,? Lenika shrugged as she talked about her artwork. She was trying to keep that part of herself locked away as she had closed that chapter in her life and didn?t want to revisit it. ?I still had much to learn on the subject, but I was ever impatient during those times.? They had been strolling leisurely down the main path and were almost to the main town, but Lenika gave a tug and started leading them back and off to another side road. ?You know, you do not have to make me anything more.?

?Have to?? It stung some to hear her say that. And Gaerwyn looked away and out to the scenery as he said, ?Of course, if you would rather not and keep the chests. It will be as you like.? He managed a smile for her in brief and then looked out again.

His look away caused Lenika to stop walking as she knew that tactic; she has used it before when she was upset. She moved to stand in front of him as she tried to explain herself to this hurt man, ?Gaerwyn, I did not mean it to hurt you, but I don't want to...? She searched for the right words, ?Make you work too hard either. Shouldn't this be the time when you get to relax and be with your family??
?Lenika, you are my family, too, though not formally, but in all other senses. I want to do things for you, but I don't want to force them on you if you don't want them. I do spend time with the children, and in my doing these things I teach them how to be when they grow up, how to show their affection for someone, how to assist others, how to be, and?? Gaerwyn added with a grin, ?They learn a little carpentry.?

Lenika gave a little smile up to him, some part of her still felt guilty about hurting him over a simple carpentry matter. ?I was including myself in the statements about family. And I thank you for wanting to make all those wonderful things for me, really.? It was her turn to look away a moment. Some part of her thought that this is where the bottom falls out from under her and the happy times will end. That she will no longer have this man and his children in her life, but there was another part that told herself to calm down and not worry, so she tried to add a bit of jesting into the situation, ?Shall we strike a bargain??

Gaerwyn smiled, though narrowed his eyes in suspicion as he, apparently, wasn?t going to readily agree. ?Speak the terms.?

?You may build whatever it is you wish for me, but you will allow us to help you at least somewhat?? Lenika leaned closer as she lowers her voice, ?And you will not overwork yourself??

?A bargain,? Gaerwyn said as he smiled feeling most willing to agree to that then he placed a kiss to her cheek to seal that deal.

?And you're no longer mad with me?? Lenika asked delicately as her heart sped up a bit. She was nervous, although she figured he might not have been mad at her in the first place. Nevertheless, she wanted him to have a good trip and she had to be sure of his feelings.

?No, of course not; I was not mad at you before, just, hurt that you would not let me make things for you. I have little to offer you other than me and my home. I cannot afford fancy things, not that you are one that needs those things or has given me any indication you feel lacking such materials, but I still want to give you something of value that you can look on and say, ?Gaerwyn gave this, made this, for me.?? Gaerwyn shrugged mildly. ?I guess it is just old sensibilities.?

?You made a whole room for me, but I will not stop you from making more. I promise.? She touched her hand to his cheek. ?Besides, do you know you gave me something that I thought I wouldn't get back?? A puzzled expression furrowed his brow, and he wondered what that might be, so Lenika grinned at his puzzled expression and leaned up to press quick kiss. ?You gave me back my heart. I didn't think I'd get that back.?

Her explanation warmed him, shown in his smile, her words, the thought and the power of their meaning. He wanted to kiss her, but not sure how that would be taken by any who might come upon them, so he pressed a lingering kiss to her cheek. ?Thank you, Lenika, for you did the same for me.?

Her own smile warmed and she continued to look up at him. ?I'm glad for that because you also let me be a part of two beautiful children's lives and I should be giving so much more back to you for everything.?

?Shall we strike another bargain? No debt to be felt between us for mutual joy gained. You have given as much to my children, I believe, as they have given to you. No more talk of debts and giving more. We give not to be repaid, but in the joy of giving.? Gaerwyn tried to drew her into his arms for an embrace and she laid her head against him as her arms went about his middle. She needed to say only one thing right now to him.

?Done.?

Lenika

The afternoon was sunny, but there was still enough chill in the air that one could feel it in their bones and bring out the warmer clothes. Lenika stood at the sink and looked out the window to watch Lina and Gaer play with the other children in the middle of the front yard that was the center of all the houses. Her hands were busy washing vegetables and her attention was solely focused on the outside for the moment.

Lina had started out trying to control little Gaer on how he played, even though the other children were simply playing a game of hide and seek. Soon enough, though, Lina had joined in to show Gaer how to play the game then the girl became quickly caught up in the fun and she was soon laughing and running with them. She even played with the dogs that were running about and barking with, what seemed like, joy from the children?s games. Lenika smiled when she saw that Lina and Gaer were enjoying themselves, though she had no idea what Gaerwyn was up to. She didn?t know if he had gone off with the rest of the men, watching the children with some of the women, or gone off on his own. Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable day overall and everyone had come to think of Gaerwyn and his children as part of the family already, so Lenika was pleased and it showed on her face.

?Lenika, are you listening to me,? Ruth asked as she pulled a few green beans from the basket then broke off the ends then placed the beans into another basket.

Lenika?s thoughts were broken and her pleased smile was quickly replaced with an exasperated sigh. ?I?m sorry, Mother, but I was watching the children. What did you say??

?Those children are wonderful and I?m glad you?ve brought them, but we have some things to talk about like their father and your situation with him.? More ends broken from the green beans.

?We enjoy each other?s company and we?re suited for each other, Mother,? Lenika said quietly as she looked to the tomato she had been rinsing for quite a while, so she set it on the towel covered counter to dry. ?Have you a problem with him??

?Oh, I have no problem with him. He?s a good, fine man and he treats you well. He has concern for you and wants to do right by you, I?d imagine. Much better than the last time you brought a fellow here to see me,? Ruth?s voice grew a bit rough with that last statement and she tossed her next set of green beans a bit harshly. ?My problem now is with you.?

?Me? What have I done?? Lenika paused in rinsing the next tomato and turned to look at her mother. She had a guess of the answer, but she wanted it to be confirmed.

Ruth stopped breaking the ends off the green beans and gripped the basket in her lap. Her light blue eyes narrowed and her thin lips pursed slightly, ?Have you gone to see Matthew yet??

Lenika drew in such a deep breath that her chest and shoulders rose. She held that same breath until she needed to release it and, as she did so, her gaze moved about the room and entranceway to confirm that, at least visually, no one was in earshot. ?You know the answer to that, Mother,? she said regretfully, almost mournfully, then turned back to the sink as she set the tomato she was holding on the counter.

Ruth continued to grip the basket as she took a couple breaths. She needed to steel herself for this battle with her daughter, but she did not want to break Lenika while her guests were here. ?Lenika, you know that I love you with all my heart and soul. You are my daughter and if your father were here he?d tell you to man up and just do it. Have you even told Gaerwyn about Matthew??

Another breath was drawn in as Lenika leaned on the sink and let her fingers dip into the water that she had let gather in the bottom since she never unplugged the drain. Her head bowed and her shoulders sagged with heartbroken emotion. Her voice was quiet as she said, ?Mother, you know that I cannot see Matthew. I never have before and I still cannot now.? Tears built up in the corners of her eyes, but she was willing herself to not cry. She would not, could not cry now over this issue that has been brought up every time Lenika came home.

The basket of green beans was lifted and set aside to the table as Ruth rose and moved to stand by her daughter. She reached out to touch her palm to one of the sagging shoulders. She asked again, but more gently, ?Have you told Gaerwyn? It could answer questions he may have and it would let him into your life completely.?

The touch to Lenika?s shoulder wasn?t unwelcomed, but at her mother?s pressing Lenika pushed from the sink edge and walked a few steps away. ?Why do you do this to me every time? Why do we need to have this same discussion?? She whirled to face her mother and her shoulders rose with some angered defiance. ?Since you seem so intent on knowing, then no I have not told Gaerwyn about Matthew or every single aspect of my existence. There you have it. I?m closed off, as you have always told me, and I?m destined to ruin this for all of us.?

Lenika wanted to escape, so she started walking to the kitchen doorway but Ruth blocked her quick, and since the woman was wider than her daughter it caused Lenika to stop in her tracks. Ruth?s voice lost any sort of gentleness it previously had and her cheeks were pink from her own frustration and anger over the situation, ?Now you listen to me. I never tell you these things to hurt you. I tell them so you can live a fuller life and so that you don?t push this man and his children away from your hurt of the past.?

?I am living a fuller life now. I?m also not as young as I was when?.? Lenika trailed off as her throat closed; she never could say it outloud.

?And what happened to you when that other fellow broke it off with you? I know you overreacted because you?ve never been able to cope since Matthew. You probably blamed yourself. Did you try wasting yourself away again??
Lenika looked away from her mother and walked back to the sink. She needed to see the children playing to calm her self, to think, and to gather her strength again. She swallowed the lump in her throat, which made her voice struggle to come out as she said, ?I told you what happened. I tried on some wigs, I tried drinking myself into a stupor, which lasted not even a day, and I went away for a while. It was hard being around someone that didn?t even take time to care before moving on.?

?You also destroyed your house in Rhydin and shipped back most of what you owned. What good had that done you??

Her voice was meek, or perhaps tired, ?I did what I felt was right at the time. If I ever went back to Rhydin then I wanted a fresh start and I hadn?t been working well for a while. I was not broken, Mother.?

Ruth straightened with some pride, which carried in her voice, ?Of course you weren?t broken. You are a Marshall woman and we do not break over outside forces; only over the family turmoil.? She had added the last to add a bit of jest into the conversation, but it didn?t last long as she continued to apply pressure. ?What do you think would happen if you told Gaerwyn about Matthew? Or if you went to see him??

?I?? Lenika trailed off as she shrugged her shoulders. She was growing weary and her heart was beginning to hurt as well as a few tears slipping down her pale cheeks. Each time they brought the subject of Matthew up, she couldn?t stop herself from crying. ?I?m sure he?d understand, but?I can?t see Matthew. I can?t bring myself to do it. It?s too hard, and I don?t want to cry over him any longer.?

?If you don?t want to cry over Matthew then you need to see him to close that door in your life. And closing it does not mean you lock it away, but you don?t carry the grief with you forever. He left some time ago and yet you still can?t let it go and grow.? Ruth reached out to her daughter, but did not move to try to touch her. She knew Lenika needed the comfort, but to give it to her now would ruin what progress she thought she was making. ?Lenika, you?ve grown some with this family you?ve brought to us, but you?re still a dying flower and now, with this Gaerwyn, it?s time you start to thrive again while there?s still time.?

Lenika lifted her hands and wiped her face to rid herself of the tears staining her cheeks. Her body shook slightly with repressed emotion and her voice cracked, ?I don?t know that I?m strong enough or ready. I just need to sleep.? She started to move to exit the kitchen again as she simply was willing to give up on the battle in this conversation.

Ruth, however, had other intentions for her daughter and she grabbed her shoulders roughly since Ruth was not afraid to fight. ?Oh no, you?re not doing this. I will not let you end it this way this time. You will be strong and you will face this, whether you want to or not.? She shook Lenika?s shoulders and dug her fingers into her flesh to get the younger Marshall out of the depression she had once sunk into. ?Wake up!?

?Ow!? Lenika had reeled back from the pain of her mother?s fingers and squirmed out of the rough grasp. ?What are you doing? I?m not doing anything! All I am is tired, Mother. Tired of discussing Matthew and tired of washing vegetables.? Lenika rubbed one shoulder then the other as she knew her mother had left marks this time. ?It?s been a long day and I just want to sleep for a little while.?

?Lenika, you listen to me and you listen good because I have run out of chances for you,? Ruth pointed at her daughter. ?I will not let you go down your path of destruction like you have in the past. I almost lost you too and you are my only daughter. Wake up, and look at what you have because from what I can see you have a man that adores you and two little children that need you. I know you love them all, but you won?t make it if you don?t let the past go and let him in all the way. You tell him and you see Matthew, take Gaerwyn with you if you have to, but you do it or I will tell him and I will make you go. That?s it, end of discussion.?

?Mother?? Lenika started but bit her lip. Perhaps bringing Gaerwyn and the children hadn?t been a good idea if her mother was going to make her face the one thing she could never bring herself to do.

?Make your choice and I hope, for your sake, you make the right one,? Ruth cut in harshly. ?He will understand and help you, but you need to let him in. Open yourself up. Damnation, Lenika, be your whole self again.?

?Mother, please?? Lenika trailed off then her shoulders drooped again. ?Fine, I will go and I will talk to Gaerwyn, but if this ends badly then what am I to do??

?If it ends badly then I have overestimated the man and you will learn and go on, but most importantly, you will continue to live. Go get washed up and I will finish the vegetables. Be with the children or do something pleasant, but remember I am giving you tomorrow to tell him and see Matthew, if by sundown you haven?t done either then I am taking action.?

Lenika nodded and sighed as she rubbed her face again, ?Very well.? As Ruth moved from the kitchen doorway, Lenika slipped out and hurried up the stairs to her room to do as her mother bid, and wash up before she goes to ?do something pleasant.?

Gaerwyn Caisson

Date: 2008-01-13 11:03 EST
Gaerwyn felt as easy in this land as any, and it helped the ocean was not far. He had woken early as habits did not change in great measure from one land to the next, and was glad to discover he was not the only one. None too few of the family in their village had risen to tend to the stock or the land, and Gaerwyn stopped to speak a while and share the burden. Pulling lines or pulling cows, he would prefer the former to the latter, but he wanted to be of use.

The cow rolled her eyes and looked at him as he gave another tug and encouraging cluck of the tongue. Two of the men of the family, one more a lad really, watched him and he called over, ?The most stubborn creature in the village, is it?? The shared grin between the two gave him his answer, and Gaerwyn laughed. It was in good fun, the harmless prank and gentle ribbing. He gave up his tugging, undid the lead rope, turned the cow towards the pasture, and gave its flank and hard smack. With a grunt of displeasure, the cow ambled and then moseyed in with the others. A laugh shared, more jests exchanged, some not meant for polite company, and Gaerwyn went on his way.

Before he had paused to help with the herd, he had been on his way to check on the crew of his ship. They were boarding on the vessel, and not taking up room in town, but they had been given leave to go there with stern reminders of where they were and what was expected of them. Gaerwyn, though, wanted to stop in and see how things fared. All in all the crew seemed just as happy to be on the ship. Some had strung up their hammocks above deck in the cold sun, wrapped in blankets and swinging in the breeze. A few games played of chance and cards, with carousing noises.

It was not as if they were being lazy. A sharp eyed assessment saw things clean, orderly, and in ready for sail at a moments notice. The days in port were doing them well all around. The bos?un, sailing master, and the other officers spoke their reports, and since this was not a trade mission, expected to send the men into town on rotation. Gaerwyn walked the deck, felt the truth of the boards beneath him, and smiled as he gave his farewells. By afternoon he was on his way back to the family and see what damage his son had caused. He did not worry for Lina, as he thought she was likely secreted away in the art room.

The cries of laughter were heard long before he saw the wild bandits that were the children, his among them, playing in the yard. Gaer was pink faced from the exertion, but still determined to keep up with the others and give as good as he got. Lina giggled among some of the others girls, ran and played with them all, and for the first time in a long while forgot about her insecurities.

Hailing the ladies at their tasks outside, he leaned on a nearby fence in the briefest of moments before Lenika stepped out. It was impossible for him not to smile more at the sight of her, but when he got near to greet her, there was something just not right. It was like the smell of a storm carried on a breeze. The hint of red about her eyes turned his smile into perplexed concern. ?Lenika love,? he spoke soft to not draw attention of others, ?is there somewhat the matter?? His hand sought hers to give her whatever comfort he may.

Lenika

Lenika met up with Gaerwyn in the yard as he returned from his adventures earlier. Her eyes were still red and she wiped at one subconsciously as he noticed then she looked away a moment as he asked what was wrong. It was do or die now as she thought back to what her mother had said about keeping everyone at a distance, but she had to question herself on whether she should tell Gaerwyn now or wait until the last possible second. In the end, she stalled just as bit as she responded quietly, ?I've just been thinking and talking with my mother.?

Gaerwyn gave a nod and considered his next words carefully. The conversations between mother and daughter being dangerous territory, and yet he did not like the effect the recent one had on Lenika. He asked, "Is there somewhat I can do to help?"

His simple question of how he could help make Lenika?s heart sink. She knew he would ask, but there was some small part of her that had hoped he would have simply nodded and moved on; however, it didn?t work out that way and Lenika was left to make her decision on when she should talk to Gaerwyn about Matthew. Another stalling tactic as Lenika glanced to the window that led to her mother's kitchen and sighed as her shoulders drooped. She knew her mother was not going to change her mind or forget about their discussion, so she took the plunge as she said, ?Probably listening.?

The response was something that caused Gaerwyn to pause and then he looked around at the crowd before he whispered the invitation, ?Would you care to take a walk with me?? He offered his arm to her.

?It would probably be better,? Lenika said as she reached for his arm since he offered it and let him lead her out of the yard before any real attention was drawn to them. She needed to feel his strength and the security he offered; besides, she might not have told him anything if he hadn?t of offered to go elsewhere. The question she had in her mind now was: how do I start to explain?

Gaerwyn kept his pace with hers, a leisurely stroll as he started back for that place she had shown him where she and her cousins had played. In idle conversational tones until she was ready to speak to the matter, he commented, ?The land here is grand to walk in the morning. I found I was not alone in doing so.? He was her hero to start the conversation.

?People often walk from one place to the other if it's not too far. The atmosphere is great,? Lenika answered distantly as her mind was far away from the here and now. She kicked stray rock, and sent it hurtling into nearby bushes, which seemed to bring her back to the present as she asked, ?Have you any questions about me and my life??

?Questions,? Gaerwyn asked as her question took him off guard. ?I suppose.? He paused to think of what it was he did question. ?I suppose there are times when I wish I knew things about your life, but I could not say what those were in order to form a question of it. Nor would I press the matter. When you need me to know, I trust you will tell me.?

Lenika nodded and her hand slipped a little from his arm as she felt like she was losing feeling in her hand, but that was merely her own confidence dropping and the cold she was letting seep into her body. ?Do I keep you at a distance??

?That is a difficult question to answer, Lenika, but I hope you will forgive me for being honest, but there are times I see you close off some thought or...well, you just seem to step back a moment. I would not say I am always at a distance, but there are times.?

His words seemed to bring her down a bit more as she nodded again. She had never meant to make him feel that way and she felt that she needed to comfort him more than her own needs; nevertheless, she needed to know the answer to the next question. ?I see. Does it hurt you when I do??

Gaerwyn looked up at the sky, ?Part of me, yes, is hurt, but the greater part of me understands and is patient. Even if you never tell me, Lenika, what part of you that you are willing to share with me is what I will cherish.?

Lenika laughed lightly but it wasn?t filled with amusement as it was more disappointment in her self. She tried to think back before Matthew, back to the times her mother always tried to remind her about, but she couldn?t honestly remember that part of her life without the tragedy. Instead of commenting on Gaerwyn?s words, she spoke on a different topic, ?I don't even completely remember what I was like when I was younger anymore. I guess my mother was right.? She would push everyone from her life and she had done it to this wonderful man. Gaerwyn wanted to ask, but only looked to her and let her speak whatever she needed to say without interrupting, so Lenika continued, ?Do you remember the night before we left Rhydin? When you asked me to marry you? I said I didn't want to cause you heartache.?

?I do,? Gaerwyn said as he nodded.

?I'm worried that I will,? Lenika sighed as her mind and heart raced. This was difficult because she never spoke of such feelings or the past to anyone before. ?I don't want to hurt you or the children.?

?This is where I wish I knew why you say that. What is it that has happened that makes you think you will??

?Just with my lack of being open,? Lenika said softly as she wondered if that really what she was afraid of. She never really has been able to say the word ?love? to anyone else since Matthew.

Gaerwyn said nothing. He said he would not press, and he was not going to start now. So he kept to the silence and listened to the sound of her nearness that would calm the rapidly increasing beats of his heart. She was going to tell him to go. That is what he feared, and he did not want to hear it. So he said nothing.

His silence worried her and she didn?t want to say more, but she felt she had to explain. ?My mother wants me to disclose my life to you, or at least the parts I try to deny,? she admitted. ?She doesn't want me to push you away.?

?I do not want you to push me away either, Lenika, but I do not want you unhappy either. If you would rather I did not know, then as long as it does not affect my children, then I will be satisfied in the not knowing,? he paused their walking to look at her. ?But if telling me would help you, then do so. We will face whatever it is together.?

Lenika sighed, ?If I don't tell you then she will. Would you rather it came from me or her??

?You,? Gaerwyn said with absolute certainty.

?Then let me take you somewhere,? she was quiet, but now determined with his answer. ?I will tell you on the way.?

Gaerwyn?s only response was a solemn nod as he followed and listened. Lenika tightened her grip on his arm as she began to walk from the field that she used to play in as a child. They were heading back down to the road, which then led them in the direction of her family land, but far enough away that the houses could not be seen. They came upon a gated pathway, which Lenika then led Gaerwyn into. Her walk was slow as she almost dreaded the place that she was taking him to.

?You know, I had never planned on moving to Rhydin at all. I had my whole life here and I was very happy, carefee in some ways,? Lenika began her story as they continued down the well groomed pathway. The sun was still in the sky and glittering in through the trees. Gaerwyn merely watched her as she spoke, his steps taken with care as he was not exactly looking where he was stepping, but Lenika knew the way; however, the closer they got to their destination, the more quiet her voice became, ?Life changes, though, and we have to change with it. I don't regret moving to Rhydin because I got to meet Ewan then you and I'll always be grateful for that.? She needed him to know that she had no regrets of her life with him.

Gaerwyn smiled, reassuring and empathizing with that sentiment, he too would be grateful, but he wanted to know to what he was grateful and in its measure. Lenika wanted to scream at him to speak because she was growing weaker with each word and step, but she forced herself to go on with everything.

?I need to...? Lenika trailed off as she swallowed, her throat felt dry now. ?There was someone else before Rhydin.? She couldn?t bring her self to say Matthew?s name, not now at least. Gaerwyn gave a brief nod, a prompting one, letting her know he heard and understood, so Lenika continued, ?I had loved him very much.? She released her hold on his arm. She didn't really know if he was mad or not and she wanted to crumple to the ground and weep as this was her moment of weakness. ?At point, we were supposed to be married.?

Lenika

Date: 2008-01-14 14:28 EST
Gaerwyn did not want to lose her touch, not during this, but he thought she wanted to separate herself from him while she was speaking. He could not bring himself to be too far, and kept close. He tilted his head to try and see her expressions in hopes of reading there what she needed from him so he could provide it.

Lenika bowed her head as they continued to walked; the sky seemed to darken as the sun was fading away, or perhaps it was the added covering of trees, and she steepled her fingers together, ?And you know, there was a time when I was in such a state of love that I thought nothing wrong could ever happen. Of course, I was young and naive.?

Concern drew lines across Gaerwyn?s forehead and pulled his brows together. Lagoon blue eyes narrowed as he anticipated the unknown. He still said nothing, thus Lenika continued as she glances to him, ?When you were mourning, I didn't just say I understood to make you feel better. I really did know how it felt.?

Lenika stopped suddenly as there was a clearing just a few feet ahead. Her body didn't want to move and her mouth no longer wanted to speak. She wasn?t frozen from fear, but she was, indeed, frozen. Her gaze was no longer on Gaerwyn as she was staring at the open space before them. This was her constant stopping point.

?Lenika,? Gaerwyn whispered her name as he took some chance at understanding now what had happened. He stopped with her and then looked around at their surroundings. In a hesitant guess, he asked, ?Have you not been there?? He nodded toward the clearing.

?Never.?

?Would you rather I wait here to give you that time?? He was willing to stay or go with her as she needed, but he would not move until she told him.

?I can't go there,? Lenika whispered the words as if to say them, let alone think them, was breaking something sacred, and she certainly wasn't moving as she said, ?You know, I moved to Rhydin to get away from the memories and trouble. I just wanted to work and just...be, but things happened and here I am.? Tears welled in her eyes as she regained some of her voice, but this was when she usually broke down and let the emotion out as she always told her self that each time would be the time that she?d go into the clearing and see Matthew.

Gaerwyn reached to her, but did not touch her. His hand just stayed there in the air near her elbow. He longed to comfort her as he said, ?I know it is hard. You know I know this, but I also know that it helped to see the memorial stone.? He did not comment there was nothing but ash of his wife to bury. It was an unnecessary thought. He opened his mouth to ask the details of what happened, but then stopped and just stood there.

Lenika wiped at her eyes. Gods above, the last thing she wanted to do was cry in front of him. She wanted to be strong and prove that it didn?t affect her any longer, but she couldn?t seem to stop herself. ?I go through this every time, you know,? she gave a light laugh as if she rid herself of the negative feelings that swirled in her core. ?I fight with my mother over this, come here and stop. She said I needed to tell you.? She hugged herself as she said, ?She said it'd help and let you into my life. What do you think??

?I think it might help you with the pain you carry. It does not take effect, but it is a step on the right path.? Gaerwyn gave a smile as he said, ?But I am in your life, and how far you let me in your life is up to you.?

?It's not easy to change habits I've grown into.?

?The same is true for us all, but you are not alone,? he said as his fingertips longed to touch her skin, and he stretched out a hand to do just that.

She stepped to him at the touch, though she kept her face turned away as she could not yet bring herself to look at him from her shame. ?Aside from my family, you're the only one that knows. I wasn't necessarily afraid you wouldn't understand, but I just didn't know that I could talk about it.?

?The words feel as if they cut you inside as you try to form them,? Gaerwyn spoke how it had felt to him when he had forced himself to speak of his wife's death.

?That's why I wanted to help you because I knew.?

?Let me help you in kind.? His hand slid down her arm and rested at her hand, encouraging her to take it.

Lenika?s fingers curled around his as she whispered pleadingly, ?Just don't make me go in there.?

Gaerwyn stepped close and tried to catch her gaze with his as he asked, ?Are you sure? What lays there that can harm you anymore than the harm of memory you carry like an anchor about your heart??

She looked at him briefly before looking to the clearing then away, the plea was still in her voice as she said, ?I just don't want to go there right now.?

He nodded and his free hand lifted to caress her cheek as he saved her and said, ?Then you won't.?

?Thank you, Gaerwyn,? Lenika said with relief and she tried to smile, but the attempt was futile for the moment.

?Let me walk you home. Dinner will be ready soon,? Gaerwyn said to her as he had spoken to himself nearly a year ago, reassuring him that the world and people around still continued.
His words, for some reason, caused her to laugh quietly, though she was by no means feeling one hundred percent better. He was staying with her family, his children were at the house, and where else could he possibly take her? So she had to ask, ?Where else would you walk me as that's where you need to go too??

?I could walk you to the ship,? Gaerwyn said as he smiled. ?Or I could walk you to town. Or I could carry you away into the wilderness and pretend we were a Fairy King and a Fairy Queen. This Fairy King would like to keep your frights away as well, but I think that power is within you.? He kissed the top of her head as he tried to escort her back to the awaiting dinner.

His light words and touch brought a small, somewhat forced smile to Lenika?s face; though her words held much more depth and meaning to them as she said, ?You help a great deal.?

Gaerwyn could see the emptiness of the smile and decided there was nothing really he could, but be a presence, so he gave his own true, affectionate smile, and walked on with her. It was darker now, but lamps were already lit along her family's property to light the way. She stopped them outside the gate since it was empty outside as everyone else, including the children, had been brought in to wash up. She looked up to him with searching eyes, but no words were spoken yet as she simply wanted to try and read his face. She wasn?t empty inside and she wanted to make sure she hadn?t left him feeling rejected, angry or some other negative emotion as well.

?I won't let this ruin the trip. Does it ruin us,? Lenika asked hesitantly.

He blinked, stunned by the question. ?In what way could it ruin us??

?I just needed to ask.?

?By no means; at least it affords me some understanding now. I do not do things as blindly as I did before. I love you, Lenika,? Gaerwyn said with feeling and emphasis. ?I love you, Lenika, and this is part of you. It does not ruin us.?

Lenika had never really been able to say it before, but she said it this time, albeit quietly but the feeling is there as she slid her arms about him. ?I love you too.? Gaerwyn wrapped his arms snug about her, keeping her close, and kissed the top of her head.

Lenika

Date: 2008-01-15 16:03 EST
Lenika had made her way downstairs from her bedroom. She was late this morning and her mother hadn't tried to wake her after the events from the previous day. It was quiet in the house and she had to wonder if anyone was around. ?Hello,? she called into the empty silence.

Gaerwyn had found a quiet spot to think. He was looking out the window, but did not really see anything. Gaer was off playing with the other children, Lina was in the art room, and he had made mention earlier to Ruth that he would like time to speak with her when she had a moment, but she had gone off to the market with some of the other women to get what they needed to complete the dinner for the day. Now, he sat, thought of yesterday, months ago, now, and tomorrow. One thought linked to another, and in this he lost track of time or presence, not even the sounds of winter birds just outside the window did he hear.

Lenika moved from the stairway and made her way into the sitting room to find someone, anyone, as she couldn?t believe that they all had gone out without leaving some sort of message. ?Hello? Is anyone home??

A voice just on the fringe of understanding, drew Gaerwyn up from his thoughts, and he turned in an automatic reply, ?In here.?

Lenika made her way further inside the room and stopped when she saw Gaerwyn by the window. Her hands tucked behind her, fingers laced and she tilted her head. Her hair was gathered into a leather tie and hung over one shoulder and she was watching him with a somewhat curious expression as she asked, ?Are you all right??

Gaerwyn rose from his seat, gave a smile as he went to her nodding that he was fine, and asked in turn, ?How are you today, love??

Her glance slid down to the floor as she bowed her head then flicked back up to him as she smiled some. She didn?t know if he was treating her with extra care due to his discovery from the night previous or if he was simply asking; however, she responded pleasantly as if to show him that everything was indeed fine with her, ?I'm all right. Where is everyone??

A hand moved to caress her arm briefly then he breathed out, ?Oh, out and about their business, some of that business is play, and others it is business.? He grinned as he asked, ?Are you hungry? I believe Ruth left a plate out for you.?

Lenika?s smile warmed at the touch and she reached out to touch his cheek as she said, ?I suppose I could eat.? She did not forget that she saw him sitting quietly by the window and he had looked deep in thought. There was no need for him to worry over her eating so she asked, ?Did I disturb you??

?Not at all,? Gaerwyn assured her as he tilted into her touch then moved to place a kiss to her hand. ?Come on. Let us get some food in you, or I will be scolded by your mother for not being sure you are fed properly.? The grin meant for lightening the day and setting the tone.

She chuckled softly as she moved to follow him into the kitchen. Lenika understood the tone he was taking and she would do the same as she had, in some ways, cleansed herself by talking to Gaerwyn about a secret she has never told anyone else outside of her family. She couldn?t make out any of the breakfast smells, so she asked, ?What did she make today??

?Well?? he began with a shamefaced smile. ?What she made and what remains aren't exactly the same thing.? Gaerwyn turned into the kitchen and uncovered the plate as he said, ?It seems Gaer has taken a strong liking to her bacon, to the point she ran out. However, there is some fruit, bread, and some eggs left.? He went to the cupboard. ?You go ahead and start in. What would you like to drink??

Lenika slid out a chair and settled before the plate. ?Honestly? Just water, my throat feels dry this morning.? She chuckled, ?Gaer certainly is enjoying himself. I hope he still has some clothes that aren't covered with mud and dirt.?

Gaerwyn snickered as he got her the glass of water, ?I am beginning to wonder. I do not think I took into account his skill at getting dirty when I packed.? A shrug of his shoulders as he set the glass of water before her, and took a seat across as he said, ?I will see to some of the washing some time when I won't be in other folks way.?

She laughed as her fingers curled around the glass. ?If they haven't done it already, Gaerwyn,? Lenika said as she seemed in better spirits than she had the night before and she took a bite of the eggs, chewing and swallowing before speaking again. Her other hand still held onto the glass of water as she wanted a drink, but did not take one yet. ?What of Lina, do you think she's enjoying herself??

?Have you been in your art room recently?? He joked, the hearty laugh sounding. ?Aye, I think she's feeling a little too much at home, though, and I say I am amazed, she does get out and play again. Seems she is trusting that children can be good playmates again. That time with Ewan directly after losing her mother, well, I can say this trip has been good for her.? He looked at her, a tilt of his head as he asked, ?And what of you??

Lenika paused in her eating and drinking, wiped her hands on her napkin then reached out for his hand. The truth was not just in her words, but in her eyes as well. ?It's been good for me. How has it been for you??

Gaerwyn took her hand, the warmth of their joined hands matched in his smile as he said, ?Good as well.?

?And I have no regrets.?

He grinned even more and leaned over the table to share a kiss, sweet and soft. Their kiss held much promise between the two of them and it might have deepened into something more had neither one become aware that they were still in Ruth?s house and anyone could walk in on them at any moment. The couple pulled apart gently, though their hands remained joined for a moment longer before Gaerwyn released Lenika so that she may finish her morning meal.

?Should I tell you something that I've heard,? Lenika asked with a coy smile.

?Please do,? Gaerwyn replied as he nodded and sat back.

Her smile changed into a grin, which became mischievous as she said, ?It might embarrass you.?

?You did warn me of teasing, so?? he trailed off with a firm nod, and a motion of his hands for her to give him the information. ?Let me hear it.?

Lenika chuckled as she sipped more water before telling him. ?My cousins have been wondering why we take so many walks together. They're half wondering if we've been having some sort of secret trysts.? She kept the glass of water to her lips as she tried to hide her laugh and smile because she wanted his reaction before giving her own.

The laugh was bright and bold as Gaerwyn said, ?And did you tell them of course we have!? The joking manner was in his eyes. ?Ah, well?? he sighed, though the smile remained. Makes good sense; wouldn't mind having a secret tryst.? He gave a wink.

From his reaction, she laughed, set her glance down then reaches out to squeeze his hands with her own. ?In truth, my cousins half expect it,? she informed him with a grin. In an effort to switch the topic from trysts as it would have added temptation she asked, ?Have you been to the ship at all??

?That I have. The crew are enjoying the days of relaxation. Ships in good shape, the crew are in fine spirits, and there haven't been any reports of brawling,? he said the last as if it were amazing, which is wasn't for his crew, but still it made for good humor.

?And have you any idea when you might want to sail home?? In some ways, Lenika was anxious to return to Seansloe and see Maeve as well as get back to the life she has grown accustomed to.

?Sometime before the spring,? Gaerwyn grinned then offered a more serious reply. ?When you like, though for my opinion on the matter, it might be best to sail back after a being here a week, if your family would mind me and my children staying that long. We have to sail back to Rhydin first, and I would think you would like to stay there some days before going on to Yransea.? He paused. ?I think Ewan and his family is going to stay a week with Maeve, so she won't have been without company for too long.? He knew Lenika had some concern for Maeve's health that he shared.
?I think a week is good. I'm sure they'll be sad to see us go.?

?Well, at least we can reassure them they will see you more often, yes,? Gaerwyn prompted with a grin.

?I suppose I can tell them that.? Lenika was pretending to think on the subject.

?Suppose?? His brows rose at the hesitation.

She grinned at his expression and broke the joke early. ?All right all right. We will be back to visit more often.?

Gaerwyn laughed with a gentle squeeze of her hand and then let go as he said, ?You should eat up. I am going to go check on Lina. Who knows what she has come up with by now.? He stood and kissed the top of her head as he passed by and went on to find his daughter, which left Lenika to eat in private.

?Papa?? Lina said as he entered. ?Look at what I made.? She turned the picture around.

The house, Ruth's house, was recognizable, though one would never call the art a masterpiece or even well done if it were by an adult's practiced hand, but for Lina it was just as Gaerwyn pronounced, ?Beautifully done, Lina. Would you like to show it to Lenika? She's in the kitchen.?

The young girl did not need another word, paper in hand, paint still a little wet, she ran from the room to the kitchen, holding the painting incongruously careful as opposed to the way she ran. ?Miss Lenika, look what I did!? Lina announced with Gaerwyn following soon after.

Lenika had been at the sink washing her dish when Lina ran in, so she turned to look. Her smile broadened and she clapped her hands together with delight as she said, ?You did great, Lina!?

Lina held it out as she said, ?It's for you. So you can have your home with you in our home.?

The way the girl said "our home" and looked at Lenika, the words were completely inclusive that the home in Yransea was Lenika's home as well. Gaerwyn took a seat and watched two of the ladies most important in his life.

Lenika stepped forward to Lina and knelt down to be more at her level as she took the painting. She slid the paper onto the table then reached out to wrap the girl into a warm embrace as she murmured into her ear, ?Thank you, dear Lina. This has made me so very happy.? The girl?s words, her voice, had touched Lenika deep down and all she could think was that being with the two children and their father was her home. They were what she needed in her life and she loved them all very much.

Lenika

Lina hugged tight back, and kissed Lenika's cheek. Her smile could not be given description the delight was so pure. She then promptly announced, ?I promised to help with the game when I was done, but I wanted to be sure to do a good job. I bet I'm late for the game. I have to show them how gnome warriors dance when they win battle.?

Gaerwyn's brows rose at this announcement, and he teased Lina, ?And how would you know??

Lina gave her "don't be impertinent, papa" look. Then smiled at Lenika, gave her another kiss and ran for the door calling out, ?I'm coming!?

Gaerwyn gave Lenika a smile as he said, ??I'm almost curious to see how gnome warriors dance.?

?We can watch from the window,? Lenika said as she rose from her kneeling position. Her fingers touched lightly upon the painting then she moved to look out at the window because she was curious about this gnome warrior dance as well. ?She has changed.?

?She has.? He agreed then said, ?Thanks to you in the most part. The connection you made with her. I could not have made it. I don't know that anyone could have.? A thought concerned him, and he felt obligated to ask the question. ?You do know that my feelings for you are not just wrapped around your help with my children, yes? I do not want there to be any doubt on that front.?

She turned from the window to look at him. ?Gaerwyn...? she started as she stepped towards him. ?I already knew that.? A smile then a light tease, ?Though, I love you as a person, I also love you for what you do for your children.?

Eased by her words, he smiled and offered a light kiss to her lips, then whispered, ?Think we should give more for your cousins to talk about?? The laugh and grin told he was just kidding her.

Lenika laughed low as she said, ?They'll talk no matter what! Do you want to go out and see how this dance is working for the children??

?And get caught up in it? I can bear some embarrassment in front of your family, but not that much.? Gaerwyn laughed and looked to the window. ?This will do just fine.? And so it did, for it seemed Lina had taken command of a few of the kids who, Gaerwyn guessed, were the gnome warriors, and was jumping and flinging her arms about in demonstration which they promptly did in turn but with their own additions of hooting and hollering as well. Gaer was naturally being one of the more enthusiastic members of this group.

Lenika stood near him and leaned her head against his shoulder as she watched the children outside. ?She'll have so many wonderful memories and dreams to return home with.?
He nodded as his arm about her shoulders and held her close. ?So she will, and Gaer, too. I hope so will you; speaking of, I think I heard a rumor of a family party, music, dancing?? He shrugged a shoulder as he added, ?Or they might have been teasing me to see my reaction.?

?Yes. They're having one special for our visit, and there will be more food too.? She poked lightly at his stomach with a grin.

?Oof,? Gaerwyn said as he rubbed where she had poked. ?I may have the crew use the main mast haul to get me back on ship.? He chuckled then said, ?Your mother is a fine cook. Now I know where you got your talent. I will have to walk a lot more to lose this extra...? he shook his head without a word to describe it that did not make a sour taste in his mouth. ?But do not tell Ewan. After the training I put him through, the last thing I need his turn about being fair play.?

Lenika laughed and rubbed his stomach gently where she poked. ?Maybe I should tell him for all that you call him redbird.?

?Now?? Gaerwyn actually pretended to be upset by that and defended himself. ?That is just gentle ribbing. Good fun and all. He is my cousin after all. Someone had to do it. Better me than someone that meant it meanly.? He gave a wink to her as he chuckled, ?Call him redbird once, and see what he does.?

Lenika laughed again as she said, ?I can't as I have red hair also.?

?You have beautiful hair, mahogany and wonderful. His is like a matchlight it is so bright.? He shook his head. ?Completely different situation; call him redbird. It'll be fun,? he coaxed.

?I'll leave that to you.? She grinned at him as she said, ?Gentle ribbing between cousins of course.?

?Very well, but should you ever acquiesce to becoming my wife, then you will be a cousin as well.? Gaerwyn beamed a triumphant smile at that bit of logic, which did make sense.

?Did I not already agree to it?? Lenika asked as she did look puzzled.

He frowned at her, but sighed and went on, ?Speaking of which. I need to speak to your mother. I have asked to speak with her sometime today.?

?She'll most likely talk to you when she did me.? She tried to press a kiss to his cheek as his frown and sigh made her feel bad over her confusion. ?I'm sorry if I'm confused.? She, however, didn?t want to continue that conversation and cause trouble so she tried changing topics back to the one about her mother. ?She'll ask you to help with dinner then want to talk.?
Gaerwyn gave a nod as he said, ?I was thinking of that, and other things, when you came down.? He stiffened as Gaer took a fall and another boy landed on top of him, but when they all came out of the mess laughing and starting up again with their play he relaxed and chuckled. The mothers of some of the children were outside watching as they never left them unsupervised. One even stepped forward to check on the two boys, however brief as both young ones ran off the instant they were up.

?What other things?? In truth, Lenika hadn?t been as concerned for Gaer?s fall as she had seen her cousins tend to the children and her gaze had been a little more on Lina.

He gave a noncommittal shrug as he said, ?Nothing too specific for too long. The past, the future, the now...how close happiness is and if I breathe the wrong way it might all be taken from me again.? He shook his head. ?Thoughts that need not be brought up now,? he had a smile for her and he spied Ruth and others returning with their purchases, so he said, ?I should see helping them in with their items.?

Lenika wanted to pry a little further as his statements seemed odd, but he was determined to help her mother so she let him go as she, too, wandered to the door and said, ?And I'll go see if anyone needs a break from watching the children.?

The children had been, indeed, playing gnome warriors. Lina had been teaching them the different dances they can do, with the older children following along well, and the smaller ones unsure of their dance steps; nevertheless, though, they were trying. The game continued for a long while like that as they had sticks to fight down any evil creatures that dared enter their sacred land.

Gaer was as exuberant as ever as he chased down invisible monsters and brandished his sticklike sword. However, as time went on, his little body was becoming more and more in desperate need of a nap, he grew cranky and pouted when it didn?t seem to go his way. In addition, his face and arms were filthy from the dirt of the morning, so Lenika strode from the porch she had been watching him from and swooped in quick to pick him up before he had a tantrum over some rule Lina was about to impose upon his warrior status. Some of the other younger children were given the same treatment from their mothers.

?Gaer,? Lenika said soothingly. ?Why don?t we go inside and polish your gnome armor before the next battle begins, hmm??

Gaer started to struggle at first until Lenika brought up talk of the next battle and, obviously, she wasn?t planning on releasing him. He gave in as his energy was started to fade and laid his head on her shoulder. She walked him up the porch to her mother?s house and inside, where she paused when she saw Gaerwyn and his mother in the kitchen putting the things she bought from the market away. After a moment, she left the two to do what they needed to do and went upstairs.

?To polish the armor we need a cloth and some water and soap,? Lenika explained as she held onto him with one arm as grabbed the necessary items with her free hand then she went into the bathroom and set him down on the stool her mother always kept in there. She didn?t give Gaer time to complain, though he did protest and squirm, as she began wiping off the dirt that had gotten on his limbs. Once she was satisfied and he was thoroughly upset, she hoisted him up again and carried him off to her bedroom. She left the door open as she laid him on the bed, where he began to protest again.

?Shhh?.? Lenika soothed softly once more. ?All the little gnomes are going to take a rest so they have plenty of energy to dance and fight later.? Her hand gently rubbed his belly as she lay next to him. ?I can rest with you a bit.? That seemed to calm him some as it assured that, at least, one person would not be having fun without him. Besides, the fact, that his eyes were already closing and he was soon in a peaceful slumber.

Gaerwyn greeted Ruth and the others in the yard and reached for one of the bundles, ?Allow me to help you there.? With the bundles supported in one arm, he held open the door with the free hand.

Ruth smiled as she said gratefully, ?Thank you, Gaerwyn.? She carried her sacks of goods into the house then to the kitchen as the other women carried their sacks into their own homes. Ruth wiped the back of her hand against her forehead and exhaled. ?Some days it's a chore to shop.?

Sharing a good natured laugh, he began to pull items out of the sacks. ?I can imagine, in particular with three extra people to feed, or if we count Gaer true, he eats for two. I've enjoyed it all. You've been a gracious hostess to me and mine.? It was the test of the waters before he plunged in with what he had to say and ask. If she was tired and harried, well, the matter would keep a bit longer. So, he began to put items away; the things he knew where they belonged were placed there.

Ruth paused as she spied Lenika carrying Gaer, but she said nothing and turned her attention back to Gaerwyn. ?I don't mind the extra mouths. I rather enjoy not having too quiet of a house, but as the years go on it does get tiring.? She shuffled around and placed some of the items away in various cabinets or baskets. ?Those vegetables are for dinner tonight. You can put them in the sink so they can get washed, please.?

Giving a nod, the vegetables were placed in the sink as directed. ?My Aunt Maeve would agree with you, I think. With the events of the last year, I know that Lenika has been a great help to us all.? It had been too many years, and one does not take practice in such manners with the intent of having to repeat it often. It was not like a request to the Merchants Guild, and not even a request to the noble family. This touched deeper and its ramifications greater. There were things he wanted her to know before he asked. ?You have a wonderful daughter, ma'am.? He cleared his throat, looked at the vegetable in hand and placed it in the sink before he turned to her. ?I care very much for your daughter, Ruth. I love her.? The truth was easy to say. He loved Lenika and there was not one doubt of it.

She adjusted fruit that was already in a bowl on the table as she listened to Gaerwyn. ?I figured as much since you were willing to bring her all the way here and offer to come back.? She nodded as the fruit was to her satisfaction then she moved to the sink.

?You know she spoke with me last night.? Her perfunctory way confused him and he felt as if he sailed in uncharted seas.

?Mmm...? She was thoughtful as she placed a towel on the counter and began each vegetable one by one. ?Would you put that pot there in that shelf?? She pointed to the pot on the other side of the sink and then motioned to the lower cabinet. ?And what do you think??

Maybe this moment was more like speaking to the Merchants? Guild. ?I think I understand more, but no two hurts are the same. I had time and a life with my wife before she was taken from me. Lenika still, I think, carries the weight of possibilities and a future stolen from her.? He moved the pot where she asked, and seeing other items that might be in the way and didn't look useful to creating dinner, he moved them to their places. ?I want to provide a different future, but one I hope that is just as full of love. I would like your permission to marry Lenika, Ruth.?

?Does she know about this?? She continued to wash the vegetables.

?She does.?

?And what has she said about it?? She paused and looked to him.

?When we spoke of it at first, she was...? He was truthful but careful in his word choice, ?reticent and concerned. As you are aware, I am certain, it was from the weight of her memories that she feared would control our future.?

She nodded and leaned on the sink. ?And now??

?I would like to think she feels more certain that she and I can place our past hurts where they belong. Maybe not soon, but together we can do it, and have a good future.?

?Hm.? She nodded and straightened as she finished rinsing the rest of the vegetables. ?You know I love my daughter, correct?? Gaerwyn nodded affirmation. ?And you know I want her to be happy??

Gaerwyn nodded once again. ?Yes, ma'am.?

?And do you know what I think of you?? She was done with the vegetables, so she turned once again to look at him.

Though he had an idea or two, to say them would have been bad form. ?I would not presume to guess.?

She chuckled a little then shuffled over to sit herself in a chair to rest a moment. ?I've found you to be fine young man, who has taken good care of his family and mine as well. In all honest, if marrying you is what she wants and she'll readily agree to it then I see no problem with it. I would be happy for it.?

His joy was overflowing, and he went to take one of her hands in both of his to give a grateful shake. ?Thank you, ma'am.? Blue eyes were alive and clear as a lagoon in the bright sun of midday, which barely matched the light of his smile. Realizing that he might be shaking a little too enthusiastically, he released her hands with a gentle pat. ?My apologies, but I am very grateful for your permission.?
?It's not me you have to convince, son.? She nodded her head in the direction of the stairs. ?She still has doubt in herself, you know that.?

There was not doubt she spoke true. He let out a slow breath. ?I know, but perhaps it is good I am a sailor,? he gave a grin. ?I have learned to be wise with the humors of the lady ocean, and hopefully that will put me in good standing with helping your daughter.?

?You two will work it out, I'm sure.?

There was so much energy in him like good breeze in full sails. Clapping his hands together and rubbing them briskly, he said, ?Now, as I help you with dinner, you can tell me the proper customs of betrothal. Is it the custom here to exchange tokens of some kind? Rings, bands, or something??

Ruth laughed, ?Well, you can start slicing the bread. We're going to be toasting it.?

?Aye, ma'am,? he saluted and washed his hands before starting on the slicing of the bread.

?As for customs,? Ruth continued, ?some give tokens and others do not. In truth, we've adapted based on whoever was the one offering marriage as we're not entirely traditional.?

He listened to her explanation, and gave a nod. He asked, ?Then are there symbols or signs that are particular to your clan or village? In my homeland we do not exchange tokens until marriage, and those are amulets with symbols.?

?There was a symbol. Many of our old signs have them as the younger ones of our family have taken to writing their names or creating new ones... I would have to look for it.? She drummed her fingers against the table as she thought on it.

?I would be grateful for the assistance.? The bread was neatly, precisely sliced, not for any great effort to do so but out of habit in working with wood and making precise lines and angles. ?What next?? he asked as the bread was sliced and ready for toasting.

?Are you planning the wedding to be soon?? She asked as she motioned to some carrots. ?You can slice those, but lengthwise please.?

He gave a nod and started on the carrots, peeling first before slicing. ?Not too soon, I should think. It will be up to Lenika, of course? he said while making steady progress with the carrots.

?Then I'll try to find the symbol as soon as I can.? She had a question, but she merely opened and closed her mouth as Lenika sometimes does when she has something to say but does not say it.

At the familiar trait, Gaerwyn had to smile and prompted, ?Yes??

And like Lenika, she chose to start with something else, ?You're doing a fine job with those carrots.?

?Why thank you,? he grinned, ?but what was it you were going to say??

?And how do you know there was something else??

?Lenika often does the same start and stop,? he grinned to her.

A good natured grumble and twitch of the corners of her mouth as she tried not to laugh and smile, though mirth was in her pale blue eyes. ?I had a prying moment.?

?By all means,? he offered for her to ask by giving a nod and an open handed gesture that indicated she should do so.

?Mm..,? she was thinking on it, ?perhaps I'll wait.?

?As you like, but I should want you to feel comfortable asking me what you will,? he finished up the carrots and awaited further instruction.

She grinned, ?While I'm not uncomfortable asking, I would rather wait until after dinner at least. Perhaps when Lenika is about as well.? There was a hint of mischief in her eyes.

?Very well,? he spoke in slow reply, observing that glint in the woman's eyes, and shook his head, just accepting what ever it was to come. ?What else can I do??

?That's it for now. It's still early enough and perhaps you ought to check and see if Lenika fell asleep with little Gaer,? nodding as she rose from the chair.

A laugh at that, knowing how it might be true, and he stopped at her shoulder. ?Thank you again,? he smiled warmly, and then moved on to find where Lenika might be. He started in his room where Gaer had been sleeping, but not finding either of them, went to Lenika's room and peeked inside. It seemed like she was dozing with Gaer, but Lenika stirred at the sound of someone at the door. Gaerwyn gave a bit of a wave, but did not want her to get up if she was tired. Gaer looked to be in peaceful slumber, his mouth open.

She smiled at him and shifted to get off the bed and pad quietly to the door, ?Seeing him fall asleep made me want to also.?

?Go ahead and rest if you like,? he whispered, ?Still some time before dinner.?

?Then I'll be up all night,? she said softly back with a grin. ?I'll just let Gaer sleep.? Gaerwyn gave a nod of agreement, and then slipped an arm about her waist to conduct her back downstairs and maybe for another of their secret walks.
