A letter was delivered to S.P.I. addressed to Baron Alain De Muer, Confidential. The courier was instructed to deliver it directly to his hand, to wait for as long as it took to do so, and to likewise await a reply.

The envelope and single sheet of parchment inside were both ceremonially heavy and the paper bore an emblem in Arabic script of blue and shining gold against the cream background.

It read:

Baron De Muer,

Persuant to your discussions in February with the head of our house in RhyDin, a representative of the Tribe will be available to meet with you this week in the private dining room of the Carlton Hotel in New Haven to begin negotiations. You may select the date and time that best accomodates your schedule. Please indicate your choice by responding with return message via this courier and the necessary arrangements will be made.

The signature was in calligraphic Arabic, in indigo ink.

The courier must have been a very patient man; eventually, though, he and the addressee met directly, and Alain penned his reply on paper marked with his country's emblem and its "proper" name, the Confederated Barony of Saint Aldwin. The envelope was sealed with wax, using his signet ring on the spot, and the letter then turned over to the same courier. It read as follows:

Representative of the Tribe,

The dining room at the Carlton Hotel is an acceptable location for our meeting. If it is convenient to you, I would prefer to meet at eight o'clock on Wednesday the 1st of June. I look forward to our discussion.

Sincerely,

Alain DeMuer
1st Baron St. Aldwin
