Part 1 ? Death Follows Her
The sun was high, the sky was blue ? the breeze was soft and cool...
It was at this time during the midday many had found themselves foraging for the tastiest treats nature could muster. While many of the food stuffs were edible, some were just too damn awful to even contemplate ingestion and so, often or not, there would always be a larger bounty of berries compared to other items, like fungi or edible plants.
One such forager, had already become quite an expect at her task.
Her name was Y'asirl. She was a beautiful young woman, with bright blue eyes, a soft tender voice and a pleasant personality. It was at times like these ? lost in the forest all by herself, that she forgot that she had the cursed white coloured hair ? the sinful mark of the Ssr'Kesir halfbreed.
Everyday she returned with her very own handwoven wicker basket full of berries, mushrooms and plants, but not to share not with the other adults, but in fact, to feed the children who had lost their families. Having lost her own, she clung to the orphans for her only means of sanity, and it was not without note that she was quite obsessed with looking after them.
Sometimes, if she got really lucky while out on the hunt, she would find the most prized and highly sought after food stuff recently discovered to be quite edible, and quite the delicacy! It for was this reason why she spent so many hours labouring away, searching for the elusive meal that could bring so many happy smiles to the children's faces.
It warmed her heart, and she thanked her Emperor ? the blessed God incarnate, that she had a purpose to live on.
High in protein and; subsequently the size of golf balls, packed with all kinds of vitamins all thanks to the soil from which the trees had grown from, these unusual looking acorns were in fact nuts. Normally eaten up by little land living mammals the Ssr'Kesir have came to call 'Squeeks,' which were not too off squirrels, but more so in size and facial structure like a cat, these little tree-growing gems were a god-send, for seventy-five percent of the Ssr'Kesir populace are as a matter of fact vegetarian. Fortunately for the Squeeks, they favoured the fruits of the land over the blood of lesser creatures.
And it was Y'asirl who was the best at finding the right areas of the land to find them. It wasn't hard. All she did was follow the squeaking squeaks of the skittish Squeeks.
Striking gold yet again, and stumbling onto a little patch of grass under the cooling shadow of one of the giant trees, she again had found another bounty no other could. She counted fifteen this time! That's twice her record!
She could not contain her glee ? that's fifteen mouths fed for a good day with all the nutrients they needed to have a fit and working body! Those little darlings ? they needed more energy. ?I need to find more...? She whispered, determination seething across her face in a renewed sense of purpose.
Y'asirl bent down to pick the nuts up, one-by-one, carefully placing them into the basket next to the green bubble looking berries ? being careful not to squash them by stacking those quite weighty nuts on top of the tender green flesh.
She took her time. After all, she was in no rush to escape the tranquillity of the chirping birds, and the cute little squeaking noises the Squeeks can make. Y'asirl could not help but giggle, as one ? frightened after running down the length of the tree spotted her, and ran back up, squeaking alarmingly right back to safety.
?This place is so beautiful... I wonder if we can stay here...? She looked to the sky, sighing, ?I pray to the God Emperor that one day we can find our promised land... May her light guide us, and let her darkness protect us...?
She sighed again, turning her eyes to the very last nut just a little ways in front of her. She moved her hand out to pick it up, but found herself pausing moments later, as something blocked the light, casting her crouched self into darkness.
Looking up at the person who had caused the shadow, her baby blue eyes blinked several times, before her lips turned into a smile of recognition. But by the time her curious words had left her lips, a heavy branch crunched against the side of her head; knocking her out, and scattering her hard earned bounty all over the floor.
