A brief note, addressed to Alana, arrives by way of a young slave boy. He gives her a gap-toothed smile and shoves the letter in her hand, leaving behind a smudgy thumb print.

"My dear Alana,

Please be advised that your responsibilities have changed. You will be of invaluable service to the Bonny Corporation if you cease watching Mary Read, in order to provide full-time protection for Brandon Lee Morgan. Being a man of peace, he is often a target; we may not be able to change his mind about violence, but we can certainly exert a little on his behalf, no?

Thank you for your many valuable services to us. Please come to the offices at your earliest convenience, to discuss the details of your new assignment. I have missed all of you.
