A white envelope with neat handwriting in blue ink was sent back to Ammy a day after the meeting. In the upper left corner, the only indication of a return address was a printed C. Farron. Within was the following Ammy.

Ammy,

Thank you for holding your get together yesterday. Please pass my compliments on to whomever prepared the food, it was delicious. Of course, I?m not writing you today to talk about the food, great as it may have been, but rather the content of the meeting last night. As I mentioned last night, I feel like your heart is in the right place when it comes to what you?re trying to accomplish. However I also feel like what was being said did not resonate properly with you. I heard of a lot of ?How are we going to protect people from inequality and prejudice?. I heard a lot of answers to that question only to have the question rephrased and asked again. You?ll have to forgive my abrupt departure but it felt as though we were accomplishing little by talking in circles when the suggestions given by those attending were deemed not enough by you. Often when that?s the case, it?s better I recuse myself from the discussion lest my temper override my ability to have a calm, rational discourse.

So, you asked what we are going to do about prejudicial violence and the like. In turn, I respectfully ask that you take a look around the city for your answer. It is a combination of prevention and response that helps combat this issue. Never will we ever be able to eliminate prejudice and inequality, not in a city as racially, culturally, and economically diverse as Rhydin City. But we can educate the community on how to prevent becoming a victim and in the times where someone is victimized, we can respond as well.

Prevention. The Farron-Queen Memorial Youth Center seeks to educate and protect at risk youth who might otherwise fall through the wide cracks of the social system in Rhydin. They are one of the highest risk groups in the city when it comes to discrimination, violence, and premature death. These are the same children that are left to the childrens homes and orphanages of Rhydin, including Dragon?s Gate Orphanage, of which I am the current Chief Executive and Operations Officer. The Seven Towers Orphanage, Stardreamer Manor, Gaia?s Kids, and even the original Rhydin Orphanage are all well versed in the victimization of Rhydin?s youth. That isn?t even a full list of local groups but our missions remain the same; to protect Rhydin?s future and to prevent them from becoming victims of the very things you wish to combat.

Response. As I said last night, you would be hard pressed to find someone within the city that hasn?t experienced at least some degree of discrimination. Whether they are human, non-human, anthro, living, undead, or anything in between, there are those that will always seek to divide and many do by capitalizing upon the fear of something different. In turn, the community has to be ready to step up and help those impacted when this does occur. Caelum Enterprises offers protection to those who need it as well as emergency response during times of crisis. Your newly formed Sword of Damocles Foundation seems to have a similar purpose. We are but two of a long list of Helpers. The Old Market Womens Shelter, the clinics and stations being implemented by Mairead Harker, the list goes on and on. There are many capable citizens, we need only take advantage of what they have to offer.

An Act does not do this. The city, diverse as it is, has a wide number of moral compasses and truly no two are the same. To force them to align for the sake of equality is a disservice to everything the city itself stands for. What is morally outrageous to me may be different than what outrages you and vice versa.

To do what you seek to accomplish, take the foundation already built by those in the community and build upon it. Don?t start from scratch when you already have so many examples of how to fight these problems.

Also, in response to those who state that might does not make right in a place like this, ask them how they keep from being victimized themselves and I think you might find that their idea of protection may very well fall into some broad definition of ?might?. Give the power to the people and everything else will fall into place.

In the meantime, if you?d like a more in depth look at some of the programs we have instituted through the Dragon?s Gate Orphanage Foundation, let me know and I?d be glad to arrange a private meeting with Pandora Fox, our youth center program director.

Take care,
Claire

Dear Claire,

Thank you for the return letter and for attending. The night of the meeting much was going on in my head. After my return home and reviewing the notes, you are quite right. My mind was caught in a circle by events going on that I wasn't listening to well. I would like to thank you and Katt though for being quite clear in the concerns that were looming out there like icebergs.

I do agree that the city has many things already in place to handle this issue as it is not new, and you are right, trying to determine anything with a moral code to it is an endless battle with nothing to show for it. I would be more than happy to meet with Pandora Fox and see how the youth center is put together. I do wish to let you know that I have gone over all of the notes and what was said by everyone. No one was ignored or discarded save my own stupidity. That said I worked up a new revision and once it is a bit more finished I'll send out a review again before another meeting.

It is not a cold, sterile sounding Act, nor something imposing, but honestly taking what everyone suggested and using those suggestions to create what I'd like to call the Rhy'Din Safe Zone Initiative. It would basically take all the foundations laid down and the groups as you mentioned and enhance them. Offer people a way to get to them quicker. How to find them and make them more visible as areas to go to for safety, acceptance and how to protect yourself and be more aware for safety. I'm trying to learn my mistake and start small. I would also like to reach out to Barons, because as you pointed out, and being a Squire of Dragons gate, I know many of them often have projects of their own to keep people safe.

It may sound crazy again, but it is, I hope, steps away from the path I was offering and more towards a path that uses what is already around us in a more supportive function.

Sincerely,
Ammy
