((An ongoing collection of Ruby's notes on reagents, how they work and how she does her potion making using a method that is well loved from a series of books read many times: The Dresden Files. Her and her mother both are students of The Dresdenian Method of Potion making, so a lot of the alchemy and notes here will not reflect real life alchemy, sometimes they might. Enjoy!))

From the notes I've taken down in from the magical academy in Lupinoss, I found a potion making process that works for a variety of applications. This process was founded by a wizard from old Earth, the records states, and is called the Dresdenian Method of Potion Making.

How to make a potion/elixir/etc?
Any potion or concoction has eight components the alchemist will need to use.
1. A liquid base to imbue the attributes into**.
2. Reagent to evoke the attribute of Taste
3. Reagent to evoke the attribute of Smell
4. Reagent to evoke the attribute of Touch
5. Reagent to evoke the attribute of Sound
6. Reagent to evoke the attribute of Sight
7. Reagent to evoke the attribute of the Mind *Memories - Tricky*
8. Reagent to evoke the attribute of the Spirit *The Alchemist or User - Also Tricky!*

**I've found if you do it just right, the liquid base can actually hit one or two attributes needed as well.

While I know mom has done many potions in the past in her store, I'm still wondering how well this is going to turn out in my hands. Seems logical, simple and straightforward. Uhm, just don't talk my potions teacher at the Academy. He's still growing hair at an alarming rate.

Reagents are the life of a potion. Use them well!

Section -A-

Logged on 2/14/2018
Reagent:
Alcohol, Drinking
Attribute:
Base Liquids / Taste ^ Multiple Types / Smell ^ Multiple Types
Notes:
Drinking alcohol is the best reagent to use for base liquids when you need inhibitions or will power lowered. Nothing does better than a stiff drink or two or three. They can also do wonders for Taste and Smell to bring out an exact effect caught in a moment of time for a user.
Cautions:
Very Flammable! Drinking Alcohols are very subjective to taste!
Field Notation:
I look at a drink and I feel sick. My elder sister knows way too many bars around here.

Reagent:
Blank Check
Attribute:
Sight ^ Untold Potential or Desire / Spirit ^ Skies the Limit Feeling
Notes:
While currency and money are often amusing reagents to play with, nothing is more powerful in some realms than a Blank Check. Something about it psychologically gets all cylinders firing and makes many empowering or hopeful potions ignite with wonderful, powerful effectiveness.
Cautions:
Don't use your own Blank Check! Never know when a mage will come along and reconstitute it and wipe you out. Also, do not advise the user to use their own Blank Check as the Spirit attribute may crumble with the reality of what they really have. Fake Blank Checks are fabulous. Toy shops or novelty stores are your best bet for this reagent.
Field Notation:
So money can buy an effect with potions? That's just, just, so wrong and creepy on many levels.

Reagent:
Carnation Flower
Attribute:
Multiple - Mind ^ Romantic or Special / Spirit ^ Fondness / Touch ^ Velvety / Smell ^ Summery / Taste ^ Clove Spice / Sight ^ Rich
Notes:
While carnation flowers may be obtained by a cultivar, markets, flower shops, or picked in the wild, the intent for which this reagent is used must be considered. For simplistic attributes of the senses, gathering carnations by normal mundane means is simple and easy, though best done if during summer for maximum effect. For more intense attributes for the mind or spirit, carnations given to the crafter or the one using the potion work best as they hold a bit of vested energy and a memory link to the reagent.
Caution:
If using the reagent for a taste attribute, only use the petals, otherwise you will be greeted with a severely bitter taste from the rest of the flower's members.
Field Notation:
Flower petals are a great, visual component for salads, edible, and tend to make many swoon in love when gifted. Neat!

Logged on 2/14/2018
Reagent:
Chocolate, Dark
Attribute:
Taste ^ Rich or Indulgent / Smell ^ Appealing or Craving Inducing
Notes:
Dark chocolate is magic in its own right. Sinful, delightful and when expertly crafted imparts sensations that men and women can not ignore. If you want to ensnare someone in realms of passion or joy, dark chocolate is a must have reagent.
Cautions:
While dark chocolate can be a powerful reagent for Smell and Taste, do be sure to note if the user likes chocolate to begin with, not allergic to chocolate, or prefers a more mellowed milk chocolate. Adjust accordingly. Use of milk chocolates will lessen the Taste and Smell attributes, but not too severely. Chocolate is after all chocolate.
Field Notation:
This book entry is pretty broad in my honest opinion. The writer failed to mention all the possible combinations one can find chocolate in. If you have a user that loves chocolate you can get a lot of variations on Smell and Taste attributes depending on the chocolate mix. A fun puzzle to figure out and it's all so tasty. A reagent that can be hard to keep in stock if you get hungry. Oh, and it melts easy.

Reagent:
Flavor Components
Attribute:
Taste ^ Multiple Types
Notes:
Flavor components are not really any specific reagent like many noted in this book for Taste. Flavor components are any food item that would best synchronize or fit with the targeted user to elicit a desired effect.
Cautions:
Be wary of mixing more than two flavor components together. What may sound tasty in your mind may be revolting to another person.
Field Notation:
Well if the potions fail, the Flavor Component doubles as a meal. I wont starve.

Reagent:
Foggy Moss
Attribute:
Touch ^ Creeping Tickle
Notes:
An uncommon reagent that produces a useful Creeping Tickle for potions. Uncommon due to the common areas many reckless alchemists or necromancers tend to harvest it. Foggy Moss is abundantly found in cemeteries. Best picked at dawn or twilight when the dew is heavy or a fine mist like fog blankets the ground. Foggy Moss can be harvested in other locations not so disturbing, yet doing so will cause the reagent to lose the Creeping Tickle and merely imbue a decent Tickle.
Caution:
Do not disturb grave sites unless you use are prepared with a Dispell Grudge or have access to a Speak with Dead Amulet upon your person to gain permission from the departed and avoid desecrating a grave.
Field Notation:
Smells like rotting apples and meat gone bad when picked. The scent wont come off fingers for a while no matter how much you wash. Ick!

Reagent:
Gemstone, Topaz
Attribute:
Sight ^ Summer Warmth / Touch ^ Loving Care / Taste ^ Lemony Grit
Notes:
While gemstones are often fine and fancy affair to where upon a person or valued for trade, the alchemist should not dismiss the superb properties of gemstones for their concoctions. Planet alignment energy as well as various rare compounds and metals locked with the crystal lattice offer much versatility to these shining baubles plucked from the wombs of planets. Topaz is aligned with the ancient Earths planet, Jupiter. While in other realms, the power of Jupiter still crosses and moves with this gemstone strangely enough. Jupiter has been know to radiate healing energies, relieving pain, infirmities, even constipation. Like most gemstones, it also negates negative like energies that may have built up in a person from a variety of reasons. Alignment aside, Topaz's are often held and believed to be a source of radiating energy, similar to a low dose of radiation in ancient Earth medicine. The alchemist may choose to add a Topaz into an enchantment, steep or soak the gemstone in elixirs, or grind them to dust for potions.
Cautions:
Gemstones can be harmful if used too heavily by depositing a variety of toxic metals and minerals within the body. The agreed upon dosing by the Alchemy Council of Sliinkaa sets the use of powdered gemstone to no more than five grams of powdered stone per batch of five decanted solutions.
Field Notation:
I'll be honest here, when I heard and read about alchemists using gemstones in their concoctions I almost cried at the waste of money, literally going into the stomach and then out. But as I studied in the magic academy more, if you can afford gemstones, get them! They can impart a stored planetary energy into your concoctions and save you a lot of personal energy investment.

Reagent:
Lace
Attribute:
Touch ^ Sensual / Sight ^ Erotic or In Confidence or Naughty
Notes:
While lace has been used in many applications around many worlds, it never fails to find its way into the boudoir. An effective reagent if one is trying to ensnare a lover be it man or woman, lace does not discriminate.
Cautions:
Do not use too much Lace. It can get over powering quick and produce a queasy feeling in the user. An inch or two is more than enough to get the desired affect to light up.
Field Notation:
Now I'll never wear lace again.

Section -P-

Logged on 2/14/2018
Reagent:
Personal Affects
Attribute:
Spirit ^ Kinship or Closeness or Familiarity
Notes:
Personal affects are the best and most preferred reagent for concoctions to find, enhance or bring people together. The history and solidness of that item has a powerful link to the soul and mind that just can not be mimicked any better.
Cautions:
Ensure that the offered item is safe to destroy and not wanted back.
Field Notation:
Personal affects are the foremost reason many magic users get paranoid about forgetting things somewhere. You never know what can be done with it.

Reagent:
Romance Novel
Attribute:
Mind ^ Flights of Fantasy or Dreamy Desires
Notes:
Romance novels come in all types and styles. From proper and teasing to setting the bed sheets on fire while you read. A common substitute in many love concoctions when a love letter or poem is not offered for use.
Cautions:
Never throw out Romance Novels. You never have to read them, but they are handy for love potions or paying off possessed skulls. Trust us.
Field Notation:
Uhm. Just going to walk away from this one.

Logged on 2/14/2018
Reagent:
Rose Water
Attribute:
Smell ^ Delicate Perfume or Freshness or Feminine / Taste ^ Wood or Crisp or Bitter
Notes:
Rose water has been used for ages as a natural perfume, tonic water, cooking supplement and herbal health support. Easy to distill in the laboratory using petals and rose hips in a mixture of 5 parts water and 1 part spirits. The perfect touch for delicate Smell attribute needs or for giving a sense of wholesome with Taste with the bitter. As the old saying goes 'If it's bitter, it's good medicine!'
Cautions:
A small amount goes along way! Old saying aside, a pinch or two of sugar is recommended if Rose Water is the base liquid of your concoction. If it's too bitter, it wont sell.
Field Notation:
It's watered down perfume. Seriously. Smells nice but the taste. Erf!

Reagent:
Satin Cloth
Attribute:
Touch ^ Charming or Well Dressed or Velvety
Notes:
Satin cloth has been shredded into a variety of preparations to give a luxuriant feel. Often used in preparation of concoctions for the male gender, though it will work for the female gender as well.
Cautions:
Do not soak you're entire strip of Satin Cloth in the brew. A few strands of the fiber will suffice! Thrift means an alchemist still in business!
Field Notation:
It's not stated but the color of the Satin Cloth can depend on who you're crafting the potion for. Tricky! It's not cheap either!

Logged on 2/14/2018
Reagent:
Silk Cloth
Attribute:
Touch ^ Sensuous or Well Kept or Smooth
Notes:
Silk cloth has been shredded into a variety of preparations to give a sinfully smooth feel. Often used in preparation of concoctions for the female gender, though it will work for the male gender as well.
Cautions:
Do not soak you're entire strip of Silk Cloth in the brew. A few strands of the fiber will suffice! For maximum impact, do not use synthetic silks but worm silks if you can.
Field Notation:
Feels like a few bed sheets around my step fathers manor. Never knew how anyone could sleep and not wake up on the floor from slipping off them. Not cheap either!

Logged on 2/14/2018
Reagent:
Smoke, Campfire
Attribute:
Smell ^ Relaxation or Something Desired
Notes:
Campfire smoke is versatile in offering the crafter ways to make calming or enticing preparations. Best captured in distilled oil while camping, or in water for a weaker note. Campfire smoke caught in a glass jar imparts the freshest sensation of relaxation or desire.
Cautions:
Campfire smoke caught in glass jars will go stale in a week! Best to capture this reagent from an actual camping trip with friends. If you must build a campfire sans camping trip, use aged wood, never green wood!
Field Notation:
It smells like trips to the lake with my Stepfather Jihnkoh Spiritor. Leaves a nice smoky scent on your hands and hair. Wonder if I could ever make a cologne with it?

Logged on 2/14/2018
Reagent:
Sounds
Attribute:
Sound ^ Multiple Types
Notes:
A listing of every possible sound that could be used in this craft would be a tome unto itself. Sounds are very effective in eliciting a wide variety of effects. The best course of action is to consider what kind of sound you want to emulate in your concoction then capture it within a tin can that is seal-able for louder sounds, glass jars for subtle and soft sounds. Sounds can be made fresh, though the ones captured during a pure moment of emotion causing them are the best. Sounds tend to last for a year.
Cautions:
Use ear protection with any shrieking sounds you capture or release. Bear in mind it is considered very rude to thrust the open end of a can or jar in someones face no matter how much you say it is for alchemy.
Field Notation:
I'm going to have so much fun collecting sounds. Wonder if I can make a potion with a cow moo?

Logged on 3/20/2018
Reagent:
Spice Root
Attribute:
Touch ^ Warming Sensation from Within / Taste ^ Bitterly Spicy / Smell ^ Pungent and Cinnamony
Notes:
Spice root is a decent substitute when an alchemist is unable to find the inner bark from the Cinnamomum genus of trees that is used for creating the spice called Cinnamon. Spice root is often found in marshy soil or upon the high river banks in hills and mountains. The shrug the root is taken from has a heavy foliage of burnt umber leaves that are in the rough shape of a foot. Spice root can be used wet for mild warming effects or dried and powdered for a more potent internal heat and aroma.
Cautions:
Given the environment that Spice root is harvested from, alchemists should pay special attention to any bulbous, white nodules upon the reddish brown root. These nodules are a sign of Eldus Mortim fungus that has taken root in the Spice root bush. Eldus Mortim fungus, if not purged from the root by salt water and two pellets of baking powder. Eldus Mortim fungus can cause a wasting, dysentery like condition that can be fatal if left untreated.
Field Notation:
Spice root is tricky to find in the realm as the bush can be confused for Skunk Row. Both roots look identical in color and the foliage on both bushes can look like feet. Skunk Row though has tiny striations of light green on the leaves. The root itself will tell you quick if you got the right root or have to deal with the stench of the Skunk Rows natural defense to being eaten by animals. Whew! Though if you need a cinnamon fix, chew on some dried Spice root. It's warm and spicy, just don't put the wet root in your mouth. Bitter compounds still remain. Bleh!

Reagent:
Sports Magazine
Attribute:
Mind ^ Flights of Success or Wishful Thinking or Desire
Notes:
Sports magazines come in a vast selection based on the sport covered. Many even cover things not sport related, ahem, like the swimsuit editions. A somewhat effective substitute to a love letter or poem if they are not provided but it can be a hit or miss with this reagent.
Cautions:
Not everyone likes sports. That is all.
Field Notation:
This sounds like a risky reagent to use. Mom was right about the potion making process being fickle.

Reagent:
Willow Bark
Attribute:
Taste ^ Sharp Bitterness / Smell ^ Earthy with a Woody Acridness
Notes:
Willow bark has been used for centuries in many apothecaries for relieving aches and pain. Modern science, the young sister of Alchemy, has even refined and synthesized the acids within the bark for chemical pain relief. Willow bark can be steeped as a tea or powdered and set into a capsule.
Cautions:
Care must be taken to insure the consumer is not allergic to Willow bark or of a very weak constitution that can be further exacerbated by the compounds of Willow bark.
Field Notation:
Luckily Willow trees are abundant in this land and many farmers markets sell it in dry strips. I have asked the locals and indeed they use it in teas for easy pain from ailments and injury. However, they have also informed me that a very strong decanting of Willow Bark tea can cause a wound to bleed like a crack in a cup full of water. This tea made from this bark is indeed bitter and may need a little sweetening to make it palatable to the young or the very picky.

The page was a bit wrinkled, splotched and wafted with the fain odor of Rose Water and Scotch.

Romance in a Vial - For Ladies
Base Liquid: Peach Schnapps
Taste: Dark Chocolate
Smell: Rose Water
Touch: Silk
Sound: Two Kisses from a Jar
Sight: Striped Carnation
Mind: Romance Novel
Spirit: Blank Check

Romance in a Vial - For Gentlemen
Base Liquid: Scotch
Taste: Medium Rare Perfectly Seasoned Steak
Smell: Campfire Smoke
Touch: Satin
Sound: A Soft Whisper from a Jar
Sight: Lace
Mind: Sports Magazine
Spirit: Lady's Handkerchief

Notes:
Strain each batch of liquids after a cold steep for an hour. Shred bits of each component into the batch and stir clockwise five times then counter clockwise twice. Place into pinkish hued vials with little heart stoppers for an 'Aw' effect. Each one sort of tastes just like the alcohol I used so I didn't blow it. Though the subtle hint of rose water or steak is amusing. Success I think. I'll offer these for a silver a piece. Should be enough for a low cost night of romance.

The page was festooned with successful and disastrous ways to grin up a Topaz, maybe a drop or two of dried blood from sliced finger tips.

Comfort of Home
Base Liquid: Pure Glacier Waters imported from Winterpaws Kingdom
Taste: Gummy Bears (1 of each color)
Smell: Willow Bark
Touch: Spice Root
Sound: Lullabies from a Flower Vase
Sight: Powdered Topaz Gemstone
Mind: Fibers from a Flannel Blanket
Spirit: Post Card Showing a Warm Hearth with a Crackling Fire

Notes:
This was not easy to make due to the Topaz shattering more than powderizing when using my mortal and pestle. Topaz shrapnel is no fun. Using two heavy mill stones provided the best results for enough Topaz powder to use. Shards still remain for future grinding. My first batch proved too bitter without some sweetening and the gummy bears seem to work well. I couldn't settle on a color though. I made plenty for vials and potions sized flasks. Vials for a simple, single dose when needed, flasks for a daily dosing when sick.
